Arabic support for ConTeXt

Hi gang, A few of you have written to me about Arabic support for ConTeXt as well as modifying EDMAC to use RL support in Omega. It is my intention to provide some info/how-to on this in the next couple of weeks, as soon as I finish some research. In the meantime, I suggest anyone interested in this to get their hands on e-Omega 1.15 (Omega + eTeX functionality). This is the version the how-to will be based upon. It is available for fpTeX and MiKTeX; I'm not sure when a version will be available for teTeX, though Thomas Esser may cooperate with anyone willing to provide a separate patch. Best wishes Idris

How to get the characters in the attached pdf file using ConTeXt

Dear all, I have sent this email already but a return message said that it was too large and would be posted at the discretion of the administrator. So I have made a sample file using only one word from the original .pdf file in the hope that it would be small enough. Apologies if I have broken protocol. I could get the proper characters as seen in the attached sample file using LaTeX with the preamble: \usepackage{palatino} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc} The result can be seen below. But I would like to achieve this in ConTeXt (not necessarily with Palatino). Can anyone give me advice on the setup commands needed. I have tried various ways but nothing has worked so far. My ConTeXt input file looks like this without any of the setups that I had been trying. I am using Gerben's installation on a Mac G4 OS 10.2.6. Also what command do I need in order to use mac inputencoding in ConTeXt? I think I saw it mentioned in one of the manuals but I cannot find it again. Of course for the \dh and \k in LaTeX I could not use Mac inputencoding. Singular--Plural

All, Consider: \definefloat[...][...] [...] <singular> [...] <plural> What is the basic philosopy behind this singular-plural thingy? For example, if I define a float by \definefloat[tax][taxes], what happens? What becomes available to me? Can anyone answer this within the context of the general philosophy of this singular--plural pair that appears in so many Context commands?

Indent-region

All, I've found Berend's context.el and Patrick's etexshow.el and they look promising. Does anyone know about smart indenting? For example, I entered: \startitemize[n] \item Real Estate Tax The real estate tax is divided into two components. \startitemize[a,packed] \item The ownership tax \item The tenant tax \stopitemize If the real estate has no tenants, then the owner pays both components. \item dog license fee The owner of one or more dogs pays a fee. Changing partitions on me

All, After setting up the latest beta of Context, I have the strangest behavior: C:\temp>texexec texexec TeXExec 3.2 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2003 --help overview of all options and their values --help all all about all options --help short just the main options --help mode ... pdf all about a few options --help '*.pdf' all about options containing 'pdf' total run time : 1 seconds F:\Temp> See how I started on my C: partition, but after texexec completes its run, I am on my F: parititon? Weird? Any suggestions?

bodymatter and alternative=doublesided, XML documentation

Hi, I have the following problem: Using \setuppagenumbering[location={footer,right}] \startbodymatter \chapter{Hi} \stopbodymatter I always get 3 pages, but I want to have two: The recto with "Hi" and its verso, I don't want to have an extra recto! Is there a nice way to setup frontmatter to use roman numerals and bodymatter "arabic" numerals starting from 1? I know I can use \setupsectionblock[][before=\bgroup\setup...] but is there something nicer? A part of that document should be in XML, is there any documentation for the ContML available by now? Or about the XML namespacing etc. support, which is not mentioned in "XML in ConTeXT"? Tobias

Marginal notes in two-column setup

Sorry for another newbie question (I am trying to learn ConTeXt and cannot always find what I want in the manual which I have permanently open) I would like to do the following: Have a two column text with the marginal notes from the left column appear on the left and the ones from the right column on the right. When I use 2-columns and I use \inmargin, I get them on the right where the marginal notes from the left column are on top of the right column (not good) Is there a way to do this? Probably yes with something \if-like? G

\setuparranging question

How can I get the following arrangement: 2 A5 pages printed on one landscape A4 page Order: -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 or in other words, no order which makes it ready for cutting/folding but just two A5 pages per A4 landscape in normal order, the way you would get it when you copy a book on A4 landscape. (Even better would be to have alternate A4 printed pages upside down so you can print doublesided and then bind it so you can flip the document without having to turn the printout.) Thanks, G

Combining \inframed with \items

I have the following test file: -- \setupoutput[pdftex]\setupcolor[rgb]\starttext \items[symbol=none,location=top]{{\inframed[frame=on,corner=round,radius=3mm ,offset=1mm]{demand-pull inflation}},{\inframed[frame=on,corner=round,radius=3mm,offset=1mm]{in comparison}},capital-intensive} \items[symbol=none,location=top]{fixed assets,entrepreneurs,as a result,implementation} \items[symbol=none,location=top]{situation,monetary,system,arbitrage,stable} \stoptext -- The idea is to have certain of the items in the lists highlighted with a frame. Although I don't get an error in the log, the output I get is broken. I have attached the tiny pdf file. Can this be made to work somehow? figures in columns

Hello, After changing from one to two columns, the figures of my document are set to "undefined" by ConText. before : <one column> \placefigure [force] [fig:TC4936.pdf] {Moquettes nappées}{\externalfigure[TC4936.pdf][width=.7\textwidth]} after : ... \setupcolumns [n=2,tolerance=tolerant, distance=6mm, balance=yes] ... \startcolumns ... \placefigure [force] [fig:TC4936.pdf] {Moquettes nappées}{\externalfigure[TC4936.pdf][width=.7\columnwidth]} Is there is a special mecanism for placing figures in colums ? Index with Bibliography

Dear ConTeXt experts, I'm trying to insert the Bibliography (using m-bib) in the table of contents in this way: \setupheadtext[it][pubs=\chapter{Bibliografia}] put in the preamble (with \chapter{}ConTeXt shows the number of the chapter near the title and I need this feature). It works well on the index page but on the Bibliography page this trick makes the title two o more lines under the normal height of the other chapters. Any suggestion to bring the title "Bibliography" at the correct height? Is there another way to make the same (or better) thing? -- Best regards, Elis

Allow hyphenation after "underscore" (_)

Hi, I am processing documents from XML sources that contain lots of words like BLABLA_VERY_LONG_COMPLICATED_WORD. How can I (globally) enable hyphenation after underscores without changing the source? I know that I could replace underscores with some sort of XML entity like &underscore; and map this to some TeX code using \discretionary..., but I want to avoid using that. problem with arranging

Hi, if I try to process XML document with arranging pdfetex loops after the first pass of texexec. My command line is: texexec --pdf --arrange --xmlfilter=car --env=sty-source source.xml --mode=arranged where mode=arranged switches inside environment file desired arranging. If I omit --arrange, all texexec passes finish correctly, but, of course, page numbers and references are resolved badly. If I comment out \\setuparranging[\\v!blokkeer]\n in texexec.pl, result if, again of course, the same. So, if \setuparranging[\v!blokkeer] apperars in *.top file, arrangement of file does not succeed as at the end of the first texexec pass pdfetex hangs up. What should I do? How to stop pagebreak after section heading

Hello, I just reformatted one of my documents from A4 to A4 landscape, dual column format. Unfortunately ConTeXt put a pagebreak directly after a heading. This is probably due to the excessive amount of white space that would appear if the heading moved to the next page. Nevertheless this is what I would prefer. How do I do this? Best Regards, Frank

How to use charter?

Hi all, I am trying to use the Bitstream Charter as a font. Unluckily, all the umlauts fail to appear. Here is how I do it: \definefont[bchr][bchr8t at 12pt] \starttext \bchr \"a \"o \"u \SS{} \stoptext Any idea why that happens? Could someone explain to me (or point me to some documentation) on what exactly happens when I do something like the above? Or is there a better way to do it (I guess so...)? Greetings, Alex

I want to test, if a given variable is empty or not. I tried the following, but the test is always false.
