combined list and spacing

Hi, I've defined a combined list as my table of contents as follows: \setuplist[artikel][alternative=c] \definecombinedlist[content][chapter,artikel] \placecontent Now that my document nears 75 pages, the list is too full to go on one page. So I thought I might get rid of the spacing between the next chapter and make the chapters bold instead. Could anyone be so kind and explain to me how I would do this? I've seen \setuplist in the manual but I couldn't figure out where the spacing part was. TIA, Alex

Changing word spacing of \tt

I'm using the standard POS fonts and I'm otherwise happy with whatever I get (TexLive7), but the word spacing is far too big when I use teletype font (in relation to \ss and \rm fonts). Tight spaces are not an option here, nor do I want to use the \setupspacing switch. Is there any way I can tell ConTeXt to use tighter spacing with \tt and defaul spacing otherwise? Greetings, Mari

How do I use entities in DocBook in ConTeXt

Although I use emacs as a text editor, I'm not confident in using utf-8 encodings. So if I can I'd prefer to use entities for the characters not defined in ASCII. How can I define entities such as "“" (for the left double quotation character) and "”" (for the right double quotation character) so as the context-processor can process them.

\underbar not allowing line-breaking

A quick question: \underbar is demonstrated in the manual as allowing lines to break normally (page 204). In my texts line breaks won't happen in an underlined phrase, meaning that they stick out into the right hand margin. Is this a known problem, or does it work for other people? a line under the header

Hello, I would like to put a line (not [underbared]) under the header and above the footer. The line shouldn't be to thin (not so thin as \hairline) and it would be nice, if I could have a coloured line (grey, red, whatever). Font problem...

Hello, I have some problems with using fonts. In the ConTeX test file at the end, `charter' only works (a little) if I use the commented line `\definetypeface[charter][rm][serif][charter][default][encoding=ec]'... But, doing this, small-caps don't work anymore and, strangely, \tt neither! How does one use a font already described in the type-*.tex files? I tried with Utopia too but no luck. I read mfonts.pdf but I have not seen what I need. Thanks, Gilles. Floats that extend into the margin?

Hello all, I am wondering if anybody has had any luck with making floats that extend into the margin? It's a pretty common effect and looks like: xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx PPPPPP xxxxxxxx PPPPPP xxxxxxxxxxxx Where x is the text and P is a picture. I am halfway there by specifying a negative "margin" in \setupfloats and using a "right" or "left" float. This gets the text in the proper position. What I need to do is to move the float a certain amount to the right or left. I have tried making a "top" specification of "\vbox\bgroup\hskip Xpc\bgroup\vbox\bgroup" in my \setupfloat definition (and a "bottom" definition to close the groups). Is this what "top" and "bottom" are for? I must admit that I am not familiar with ConTeXt's float mechanism. I hope that this is clear to people. Any help is welcome. Regards, Erik Hetzner

texfont and font mechanism

Digging deep... ;-) While playing with some freeware fonts by apostrophic labs, shy fonts et al., I recognized some limitations of ConTeXt's (or TeX's?) font mechanism. I know this was discussed earlier, but I can't remember/find and answer. I've an overcomplete font family like: \definefontsynonym [Serif] [Covington] \definefontsynonym [SerifItalic] [Covington-Italic] \definefontsynonym [SerifSlanted] [Covington-Rev-Italic] \definefontsynonym [SerifCaps] [CovingtonSC] \definefontsynonym [SerifBold] [Covington-Bold] \definefontsynonym [SerifBoldItalic] [Covington-BoldItalic] \definefontsynonym [SerifBoldSlanted] [Covington-Rev-BoldItalic] \definefontsynonym [SerifBoldCaps] [CovingtonSC-Bold] \definefontsynonym [SerifBoldItalicCaps] [CovingtonSC-BoldItalic] \definefontsynonym [SerifItalicCaps] [CovingtonSC-Italic] \definefontsynonym [SerifBoldSlantedCaps] [CovingtonSC-Rev-BoldItalic] \definefontsynonym [SerifSlantedCaps] [CovingtonSC-Rev-Italic] You can see, there's SC for every normal font (okay, they're no real small caps, but the like). But I can't access them. There's not even a possibility to access bold caps, is it? Further, why there's only [OldStyle] instead [SerifOldStyle], [SerifBoldOldStyle] etc.? And why don't work these family options (Italics, Bold etc.) with handwriting style? (Some hand fonts have more than one style!) Next question: What does texfont's --expert switch do? Is there already any docs how to write VFs to use expert fonts? (Even for LaTeX, maybe I'd understand it anyway?) If I'd like to setup CE, Greek or Cyrillic fonts, what must I provide? TeXLive 8 and Context

I downloaded the latest (well yesterday's) version of the install iso for TeXlive 8. It is still beta. Unlike TeXlive 7 Context did not work after install. The missing piece was the little script: /usr/TeX/bin/i386-linux/texexec So I copied that piece of code over from TeXlive 7 and waved my apprentice's wand over the system a few times, per the instructions in texexec.rme: cp ../texexec.rme texexec.ini texexec --verbose texexec --make fmtutil --all texhash (The last two just for a security blanket) ...and I now have Context up and presumably running correctly. So perhaps before TeXlive 8 becomes final final, someone should insert that little script where it belongs in the distro. To find the address for the beta google (groups ) under John Culleton and TeXlive. Someone was kind enough to give it to me. Unfortunately my internet connection is almost kaput thanks to that stupid Microsoft virus. I am connected but when I ping three packets I only get back one. This message may get there someday. Hyphenate long URLs

Sieve of Eratosthenes

All, I thought this might be a cool little programming challenge that might even make the metafun manual, as technique employed might be unique. I'd like to talk about the Sieve of Eratosthenes in class next week, specifically to find the primes between 1 and 100. This involves listing the integers from 1 to 100 in a 10 by 10 array. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 ... ... 91 92 93 94 95 96 97 98 99 100 1 is not prime and can be deleted from the discussion. They way the "sieve" works is to note that 2 is prime, but 4, 6, 8, etc, are not, because they are multiples of 2. The student now goes through the "sieve" crossing out all multiples of 2 (every other number). Then, 3 is a prime, and the student goes through the "sieve" crossing out every multiple of 3 (6, 9, 12, etc). Continue in this process, and the "sieve," when finished, will contain the primes from 1 to 100. Now, for my graphic requirements. 1. Make a grid 10 by 10 with gridlines. This will form 100 boxes to contain the numbers from 1 to 100. 2. Make the entire grid take up as much space as possible on us letter or a4 paper (for an overhead transparency). 3. Put the numbers centered in each "box" formed by the grid. Big numbers of course. Things to learn. 1. This might be a good example for outline fonts for Context users to study. So, setting up the fonts would be a cool example. 2. Would this be an array of boxes? 1 or 2-dimensional? 3. A nice loop for inserting the numbers automatically? 4. Thicker line styles and use of color? I'd love to see different approaches. A good opportunity to learn new technique and ideas for attacking this problem.

typescripts

My typescripts are now online: http://www.fiee.net/texnique/?menu=0-1-3&lang=en or directly: http://www.ramm.ch/fiee/texnique/material/typescripts.zip The archive contains only typescript files, no AFMs, PFBs, TFMs, VFs, MAPs or the like. Put them in texmf(-var|-local|...)/tex/context/user or in your project directory. Install the fonts with texfont (or with my also contained install-font.pl that calls texfont and does some other nasty work, but it's not very sophisticated, and you must edit the hardcoded TeXRoot yourself -- I know I should use kpsewhich, but...). All file names are supposed lowercase! (I had much problems with uppercase font names.) The archive contains typescripts for the huge (but not so beautiful) font families of URW with their spread from extra narrow to extra wide, and some other for ITC, Adobe and Linotype fonts. Hello, For a publication I need to typeset a lot of math formulas. To make them as comprehensible as possible, I need a few specialties, and would appreciate any suggestions you can provide: 1) Some of the formulas should be numbered, some not; and at the same time I would like to align several of them. For alignment I seem to be able to use \eqalign (or \startalign ... \stopalign from the t-amsl.tex sent around here lately). But if I place a \placeformula in front of this, the whole aligned block only gets one number; I would need a number for every line (or even better: a possibility to state, which lines should be numbered, and which not). By looking into core-mat.tex I found the commands \formulanumber and \subformulanumber which I can add after each line, if I want it to be numbered. Unfortunately they only set numbers, if the whole aligned block also is numbered (by using \placeformula), and they furthermore do not put the number beside the right margin, as is done by \placeformula, but directly where the \formulanumber appears. How can I enable the numbers even when not using \placeformula (or when using \placeformula[-]), and how can it put the numbers next to the right margin? 2) What are the keywords "alternative" and "indentnext" in \setupformulae meant for? Is there any documentation available concerning math formulae, besides "ConTeXt, the manual"? 3) I'd like to be able to set more than one line below large math operators, e.g. something like \sum_{m: \\ 1 \leq m \leq M}. Unfortunately this does not work as expected (it seems to conflict with the \startalign block).
