Side floats starting in mid-paragraph

Hello, I'm just putting the finishing touches on this pamphlet, and I was wondering if it was possible now to start side floats midparagraph. \movesidefloat[+2*line] (is that syntax correct?) will push down the side float just right, except that the text at the beginning of the paragraph will not flow around the picture correctly. That is, xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxx PPPP xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx rather than as desired: xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx PPPP xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx Any sort of hacky solution would be welcome! Unfortunately, my best shots have not worked. I tried \hangafter and \hangindent, but they do not seem to work in Context. Thanks for all the help. Regards, Erik Hetzner

Jesus Christ! Now it works!! (Even without \brokenpenalty=0 ) Isn't that strange? TeX settings not in the preamble? But hey, this gives us the very useful advantage (compared to LaTeX) that we now can switch to different clubpenalty/widowpenalty values right in the text. And that's amazing - for in LaTeX you'd need to construct an environment for changing the clubpenalty/widowpenalty values that are set in the preamble! Wonderful. My first week with ConTeXt

Hello everyone, I have been using ConTeXt and reading this list silently for a week now. I am quite impressed by the features and the flexibility ConTeXt has to offer -- yet, I am still a little bit anxious to give up all the things I have got used to in LaTeX. What I am trying to do at the moment, is convert some LaTeX documents to ConTeXt. Some things have indeed been easier than expected, while others seem to be a lot of work and can be quite troublesome... I am sorry if anything I am about to ask has already been covered here or if the answer is in the manuals -- at the beginning it is sometimes quite hard to look in the right places. -- At first, a general request rather than a question: Learning ConTeXt would be _much_ easier if there were more example files around. At some points the manuals are hard to understand and some things are not even covered. I learned a lot in LaTeX, too, by taking some example file and modifying it to suit my needs. A read somewhere (although I can't remember where) that the sources to all documents available from pragma-ade.com "are or will be made public". This would be great! In the meantime I would appreciate any links to examples. How do other ConTeXt users realize Styles for their index and their bibliography? How do they set up headers, footers, chapter and section headings, pagestyles, etc... -- \placefigure (caption) question #1: For some of my figures I want to have captions _below_ the figure, but the caption should be wider than the figure itself (if the figure is 0.5\textwidth and centered, I want the caption to be 0.9\textwidth or even \textwidth). How do I do that? -- \placefigure (caption) question #2: Some of my figures are quite tall (= \textheight), so the caption cannot be below or above, but has to be _beside_ the figure. I want those figures to appear *left* on *odd* pages and *right* on *even* pages, and the captions vice versa. I don't want to have the caption in the outer margin, but rather the width of the figure plus the width of the caption should be equal to \textwidth. Thanks for any hints! Andreas

Crop marks and Lightning Source

A popular POD printer in the USA called LIghtning Source wants the finished page to be centered on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper in the pdf file submitted to them. This can be done with \definepapersze and \setuppapersize. However this technique shows cropmarks and Lighting Source specifies "no crop marks." Question 1: How do I eliminate cropmarks yet still have the smaller page centered on the larger page? Second, my customer pointed out to me that on my finished pdf the cropmarks do not exactly delineate the specific size (in this case 5.5 x 8.5 inches.) On my laser printer they define a space about 1/32 inch shorter than the nominal dimension in both vertical and horizontal directions. This is about 2 or 3 points. Question 2. Why are the cropmarks apparently imprecise? Arabic-ConTeXt

Changes/bugs in the new Context

Dear Mr. Hagen. I'm sorry I bother you, but I really need a help. Some time ago I uploaded and installed the new version of ConTeXt (ConTeXt ver: 2003.8.21). After that I was not able to compile some of my documents due to changes (bug?) in the new version (the changes may be older). I'd like to ask how should I handle the following two cases in the new version. 1) Changes in colors In some older version I could write things like this: \setupheader[style={\ss\bfb\red}] \setuphead[chapter] [textstyle={\ss\bfc\setupinterlinespace[line=24pt]\red}] \setupinteraction[state=start, style=\red] where \red is a color. Now it makes errors. How should I handle it now? In heads and headers I can use command option and \setupheadertexts respectively. But how sould I set the interactioncolor? (This is the real cause of the problem I have ask the last week -- by my mistake atributed to the content-lists.) 2) Chagnes (bug?) in references Some time ago command \reference[...]{...} expanded the term in the second (curly?) braces before writing to auxiliary files. Now it doesn't. I use this command in my macros like this \reference[#1]{\the\somenumber.\the\anothernumber}} Now the commands \the\somenumber.\the\anothernumber are placed to .tui/.tuo files without expansion. I had to redefine it in the following way: \global\let\OriReference=\reference \gdef\reference[#1]#2{% \edef\MyRefO{#2}% \def\MyRef##1!!{% \OriReference[#1]{##1}% } \expandafter\MyRef\MyRefO!!% } Is it a bug or a feature? How should I use it? Doesn't my solution interfere with the genious ConTeXt macros? Two questions on \setupinterlinespace

Hallo, as a former LaTeX-user I am quite confused by \setupinterlinespace. Could you help me with two aspects, please? 1. If I define \setupinterlinespace at the beginning of my document then all "elements" (like bodytext,foonotes, chapter, section etc.) are affected. How can I define the interlinespaces for each individually? 2. I can use \setupinterlinespace[line=13pt] which gives a fixed interlinespace for all "elements" (like bodytext,foonotes or section headings) and I can use \setupinterlinespace[small] or \setupinterlinespace[medium] or \setupinterlinespace[big] which gives different interlinespaces relative to the fontsizes of footnotes, headings, text etc. with factor values from 1 to 1.5 (as it is written in the manual). How can I define other values - like 1.1 or 1.75?? Thank you for any reply, Steffen

clubpenalty/widowpenalty ignored - a bug?

Worst case became true: After spending lot of time on defining and setting up my first ConTeXt project I had to encounter that there are orphans and widows in my book. What I did: Just before \starttext I wrote \clubpenalty=10000 \widowpenalty=10000 \displaywidowpenalty=10000 Is this wrong - or is it a bug in ConTeXt? Kind of desperately, Steffen

fonts and footnotes

Hi! I have a problem with font of footnote-numbers. I will try to describe some details because they can be important. I've defined some sans-serif font with my own styles and sizes: \definefontsynonym[tfMyFont][file_name1] \definefontsynonym[bfMyFont][file_name2] % I don't need neither italics- nor math-style \definebodyfont[13pt,12pt,...,9pt][ss] [tfs=tfMyFont sa 0.75, % let's test alternative for tfxx tf=tfMyFont sa 1, .... bfs=bfMyFont sa 0.75, bf=bfMyFont sa 1, ....] \setupbodyfont[13pt,ss] Then I set styles for heads (chapters, sections etc.). The same for headers and footers. These setups work OK. I have a problem with footnotes though. I tried \setupfootnotes[style=\tfs]; it doesn't work (why?) -- footnotes are set with some ConTeXt-default ss font -- cmss10 -- which is not my beautiful sansserif:-). I also tried setup \setupfootnotes[bodyfont=10pt]; it works good since ten-point font is defined in \definebodyfont.. BUT numbers of footnotes still 'use' default sansserif font. So I tried something like; \setupfootnotes[...,numbercommand=\MyCommand], where \MyCommand set appropriate fontstyle and raise the number as a ^superscript (quite sophisticated way...). Anyway I have still no idea how to setup correct font and style for footnote-numbers. 1. How to setup font-style and -size for footnotes text without giving dimension directly? I mean why I have to set \setupfootnotes[bodyfont=10pt] and I can't set \setupfootnotes[style=\tfxx]? 2. How to setup font-style and -size for BOTH footnote reference (in text) and footnote number (in the bottom of the text area)? Pawe/l

I still have no idea to setup the linespacing for the different elements like footnote, headings etc. In LaTeX it was quite easy (\fontsize{size_of_font}{linespacing}\selectfont): \renewcommand{\normalsize}{\fontsize{10pt}{13pt}\selectfont} \renewcommand{\footnotesize}{\fontsize{8.5pt}{10pt}\selectfont} \newcommand{\heading_1}{\fontsize{14}{20}\selectfont} \newcommand{\heading_2}{\fontsize{12}{14}\selectfont} But how to write this in ConTeXt (i.e. set up in pt not in ex)? Status update on e-Omega/Aleph

Hello people, I'd like to inform you on the current status and short-term forecast for e-Omega. The current official release is versioned 3.14159--1.15--2.1 (RC1) and is based on Omega 1.15 and e-TeX 2.1; even though it is just considered a Release Candidate, it's stable enough for production use. In fact, it has already been successfully used to publish in mixed-direction context. There will likely be at least one more release candidate, to solve a couple of direction-related bug, and probably two (the second featuring probably mostly a code clean-up). The e-Omega task force has decided for a name change for the project. From the first stable release onwards, the project (and the resulting program) will be called Aleph ($\Aleph$ in TeX notation). For those who missed the previous announcements, e-Omega (soon Aleph) is a user initiative, effectively started in November 2002, to merge two of the most important TeX extensions (Omega and e-TeX) to ensure that the wonderful enhancements in each would be readily available to users that need both of them. In its present state it was presented at the TUG2003 conference in Hawai`i this july. The focus of Aleph development is and will be: * providing a stable and reasonably fast extension to TeX containing most of the Omega enhancements (support for large fonts, multiple directions and character coding manipulations (OTPs/OCPs); the only unavailable feature is the support for SGML/XML) and many of the e-TeX enhancements (except for the bidirectional ones, surpassed by the more powerful multidirectional capabilities of Omega); * providing a development environment for middle-level users which would not grow obsolete in the short term, henceforth ensuring continued support for already-developed OTPs and similar companion tools; * providing a development environment for modern format developers (ConTeXt, and hopefully in the near future a new LaTeX as well) to support multidirectional typesetting in an easier-to-handle and more powerful programming environment. Both in the right-to-left world and in the CJK world work is already in progress to make sure these points are fully exploited. Thanks also to the excellent (independently developed) dvipdfmx DVI-to-PDF converter, support for the extended features of Omega and e-Omega/Aleph will not come at the cost of losing the option of easy PDF production (yes, we all would like to have PDF production directly integrated like in pdf-TeX, but don't expect that any time soon.) A note about the new name. Among the many reasons for the choice of the name there are: * the origins and purpose of the project: whereas Omega seeks to eventually offer the definitive answer to virtually all the problems of multilingual typesetting, Aleph has a more modest goal: to provide an immediately available and usable step in that direction. Since Aleph is the first letter of both the Arabic and the Hebrew alphabet (both of which need the multidirectional features offered by e-Omega), and as the project was started thanks to the initiative of Idris S. Hamid and Alan Hoenig (who are working on Arabic and Hebrew), choosing such a common name which connotes both "immediate" and "multilingual" was considered an appropriate choice. * also, Aleph is used in mathematics to denote transfinite numbers. This will allow "perverted" autoreferential tricks, like having a countable first stable release of Aleph ($\Aleph_0$); following major releases will be subsequent transfinite numbers ($\Aleph_1$, $\Aleph_2$, etc) and minor improvements/bugfixes will be cardinals ($\Aleph_0+1$, $\Aleph_0+2$, etc) A mailing list, graciously hosted by NTG, the Dutch TeX User Group, is available; its address is aleph at ntg dot nl. Question on \setupencoding[default=ec]

Hallo, I have re-read the mailings in the archive concerning proper hyphenation and I saw that it is a known problem to have hyphenation in words containing cedilla, accent or umlaut. As it is solved in LaTeX with the [T1]{fontenc} package some people wrote that in ConTeXt the equivalent should be: \setupencoding[default=ec] But that's not true (at least for german Umlaute). Preventing hyphenation?

I know this has been on the list earlier, but I don't seem to be able to parse the old messages enough to implement anything... My current (urgent) project has a bunch of words/codes with a hyphen: K-Patents PR-23-XX etc. These should not get a line break at the hyphen, i.e. not K- Patents but K-Patents or K-Pa-tents. As far as I understand it, the beginner's manual and the full manual only talk about how to tell ConTeXt where the proper hyphenation points are, but not, how to prevent hyphenation altogether. The trick can be awkward to type, as there's a limited number of problem codes, so I can use the synonym mechanism, if necessary. Any ideas? In the end of project frenzy, Mari

Greek font

Please excuse this long post. I was/am fiddling with fonts, "probably the most complicated aspect of TeX," to quote Hans... I feel I'm almost there, but I still need some help and would be very grateful if anybody could give me a hint. Thanks to Giuseppe Bilotta's help, I managed to typeset classical Greek with the CB-Greek fonts. Everything works, the accents are in the right places etc., yet the original CB-Greek doesn't look very good in pdfs. I have a very beautiful Greek font that comes with the LaTeX "psgreek"-package; it works in LaTeX and is, according to the manual, encoded with the same map as CB-Greek (in LaTeX, the encoding is called lgrenc.def, but I couldn't find any useful imformation in that file). I wrote a typescriptfile to use it in ConTeXt. The font works, all the glyphs are there, as I can see with a \showfont, but they're not in the right slots, which means that it doesn't build the correct ligatures for displaying accents etc. I assume I need to write a new encoding file to reassign the glyphs to their new position. I'd be willing to do this by hand (there aren't too many of them, after all), but how do I go about that? What I have got about this font (it's called "GreekOxonia," and in my eyes, it's the most beautiful typeface that's out there for classical Greek): greeoxon.pfb greeoxon.sfd greeoxon.sfd~ greeoxon.afm greeoxon.tfm a map file psgreek.map and a couple of accompanying .vf, .ovf and .ofm-files (all of them containing just a few characters of gibberish when I try to open them). Can anybody give me a hint where I could start? Any help would be most appreciated! Best Thomas

finding external figures

Hello! I'm afraid the answer wiil be 'no' but... I've just tested two, let say 'normal', ways of including external figures: -- settings in texmf.cnf (that is obvious) -- relative path in \useexternalfigure (that is obvious only for ConTeXt users :-) Is there any way to use absolute path for external figure in ConTeXt code? Is there any way to use environment variable in ConTeXt code? Regards, Paweł

Pagenumber & Footnotenumber -> inmargin

Hi, ConTeXt seems to have two different interpretations of "inmargin: \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided,location={header,inmargin}] isn't the same as \setupfootnotedefinition[location=inmargin] How can I place the footnote's number into the margin the same way as the pagenumber is? (I mean to place both numbers above/under each other on even pages) Thank you, Steffen

texfont batch mode: looks for texfont.pl instead of $0

Hans, texfont type-tmf.dat --en=texnansi --fontroot /Users/ccr/Library/texmf/ fails with Can't open perl script "/Users/ccr/bin/texfont.pl": No such file or directory batch line : --en=texnansi --ve=public --co=antt --so=auto etc. Now, /Users/ccr/bin/texfont is a symbolic link to texfont.pl in the installation, so this can't work. The problem is here: my $own_path = "$FindBin::Bin/" ; $FindBin::RealScript =~ m/([^\.]*)(\.pl|\.bat|\.exe|)/io ; Either use $FindBin::RealBin in the first line or use $FindBin::Script in the second line. Mixing the tweo breaks as soon as symbolic links are involved that change the suffix. regards, Christopher Creutzig

Hello everyone, I have three comments wrt m-newmat.tex, version 2000.11.16: I had to change a \startypen into \starttypen to get a typeset version. At the end of the file, Hans was looking for applications of subarrays: $$\sum_{\startsubarray[c] 1\leq i \leq 10\crcr 1\leq j \leq i \stopsubarray} i^j = 11567154195$$ (Actually, I think \\ should work in place of \crcr, too.) The definition of substack looks broken to me: first of all, there is no \simplestartsubstack and secondly the command should not be named \start... since there is no corresponding \stop... command. Suggested code: \def\substack {\startsubarray[c]#1\stopsubarray} (Since the argument will be typeset anyway, I think it should be given in {}, right?) Usage: $$\sum_{\substack{1\leq i \leq 10\crcr 1\leq j \leq i} i^j = 11567154195$$ regards, Christopher Creutzig
