letter style

Hello, my name is Janko Hauser, I'm a new context user, after many years of LaTeX :-) I want to use context for two different projects. 1. Produce styled PDF documents from a web-content-managment-system. This will be web-page based but also complete sets of pages to generate longer documents. One conceptual idea is to have something like a clip-board of visited pages, which can be printed as one document. Ok, this Zope-based site will be an effort going into the next year. I mention it only for background for the coming questions in the next months. 2. I want to generate my invoice and business-letters with context. I searched the mailinglist but the only note I got was a reference to "the last MAPS" which should contain an article about this. Ah and Hans has mentioned that there is something in the making :-) Is there already something to look at? Does someone know a direct link to the mentioned MAPS-article? Thanks in advance, I'm really looking forward to using context. __Janko

bold math

Hi all, I would like to use bold greek math symbols (I have the lucida family installed). In the `Fonts in ConTeXt' manual I concluded from page 12 that this should be relatively simple. However all my attempts failed: either I got the normal math symbols or I got all (roman and greek) symbols bold, whereas I want to use them alternately. I tried the description on the pages 13 and 14, but I couldn't get it working. I simply inserted `,boldmath' in the lucida typescript in the file type-exa and it gave me all symbols bold. I must admit that I don't understand much of what is written in the `Fonts in ConTeXt' manual. Can anybody give me a solution of how to achieve this? BTW. Shouldn't this feature be a standard one in ConTeXt? Thanks Sytse

All, There was an easy way shared to use the Lucida fonts without having to do any special font or map generation via texfont. Something involving Adobe KB or some such thing. Can someone remind me?

resolution

Hi I made a context-file that contains a lot of *.jpg pictures. The file is very big now, because the pictures are in good quality. I'll use the document for the web and I think there you can see no more then 72dpi (I'm not shure with that) Is there a command to set down the resolution of the whole document (including the pictures) ?? or do I have to reduce the resolution of each jpg graphic with a graphic-program. severin -- NEU FÜR ALLE - GMX MediaCenter - für Fotos, Musik, Dateien... Simple problem using texexec to combine pdfs

Hello, i am rather new to ConTeXt but i had to try it after i met Hans in a little workshop about his system in Darmstadt this year. Thanks again for the insights Hans :-) Now i found out that texexec is also a pretty nice tool for combining single pdf files into one. So i tried: texexec --pdfcombine --combination=1*1 --result=felix.pdf *.pdf to combine all pdfs in the wd to felix.pdf. That's working fine besides the fact that a footnote is added to each page containing the file name and the date. That's maybe pretty handy sometimes but not for me at the moment. I checked the texexec manpages and the manual but i did not find the right command/switch to do it. May be i'm just missing some rooky stuff. Could someone help me out here? BTW: I'm using the latest TeXlive installation on RedHat. Best regards Martin P.S.: I know that i could change the temporary texexec.tex by hand and rerun that file. But that's a bit to clumsy for such a sophisticated system, isn't it?

margintext drifting down the page

Hello all. I have an odd behaviour which I think I just about understand but can't fix. I use \margintext{Note that ...} to place little notes into the margin next to things in the running text. It has worked beautifully for all my content up till now, but I now find myself wanting to put a note next to a \bTABLE...\eTABLE and the margin text now drifts down so that it is beside the content that follows the table, rather than next to the table itself. So, \margintext{This works well} Normal running text takes a margintext without problems... but \margintext{This drifts down below the table} \bTABLE \bTR ... ... \eTABLE The margintext appears next to this normal running text... I'm using the latest stable release. I'd be happy with a workaround that enables me to have this appearance. I have tried putting a \strut in front of the table but this only shifts the margintext up a little bit. Is there something else I can do? (I tried wrapping the table in a \vtop, and in an \hbox, and in an invisible \frame, but no luck.) Thanks for any help. Duncan

Czech patterns in TeXlive2003

Hello, Petr Olsak has changed slightly Czech pattern file czhyph.tex for TeXlive2003, it's a bit `Babelized' now. It produces \errmessage for Babel's \addlanguage being \undefined. It also contains several ugly hacks to make both plain and LaTeX read \v and \' syntax for Czech accents, and finally it reads czhyphen.tex containing real patterns. The result is that generating ConTeXt format ends with the \errmessage. Simple workaround is to change alias in cont-usr.tex to pattern files from czhyph.tex to czhyphen.tex. My discussion with Petr Olsak suggests to make a more systematic correction: to add a test into czhyph.tex and make it directly read czhyphen.tex if ConTeXt is detected. This needs two things to make sure: 1. Is it OK to read patterns with \v and \' syntax into ConTeXt? 2. Is there a way to detect ConTeXt in order to put into czhyph.tex something like: \ifx\<something-typical-to-detect-ConTeXt>\undefined \else % for ConTeXt \input czhyphen.tex \endinput \fi Is there a more systematic/clean solution? Hi all, Writing examinations I want to tell my students the points of each question and the max points they can reach. "bug" in OC support

Hello all, just a small fix for the Optional content (OC) support. Yet another itemize question

Is this a bug or a feature? Please compare these two setups: \setupitemize[1][n,inmargin][margin=2em,alignment=left,stopper=)] This does what I want: I get a numbered list with numbers aligned raggedleft. \setupitemize[n,inmargin][margin=2em,alignment=left,stopper=)] According to the manual, this should do exactly the same. But I get a list with bullets. My problem is that I want two different kind of lists in my document, and when I use definition # 1, all the lists seem to be numbered, even if I specify \startitemize[2,packed,joinedup] later on. Any hints will be welcome! Best Thomas

Dithering (off-topic)

Good evening. I apologize to ask a little off-topic question, but I don't know where to ask (and it is closely related to TeX and PDF). I typeset a church bulleting. It is printed on a laserjet printer (600 dpi), and then copied on a copy machine. As for letters, all is right. But figures (photos) are this way spoiled. I guess it would help either to force PDF to print the figures in some very low resolution (150 dpi), or (probably better) to dither the figures and include them in PNG (instead of ordinary JPEG). Can some of you tell me how to do it? I tried ImageMagick's convert to dither the photos, but outcomes were really poor. Is there some good free software for this (in the best case in Linux)? Or can I do it some way in PDF? Many thanks for any hint. Michal Kvasnicka

inmargin text problems remain

Dear gang, Thanks Bill for your reply on my previous mail concerning struggles with the inmargin texts. As you can see I explicitely set the width of the margins. In order to make things easier to see I attach a minimal test file. Does anybody see the clue, how to tell Context to use the full marginwidth? Cheers Willi

Integrating Metapost

Hallo all, Running texexec on a ConTeXt-file with integrated METAPOST-Graphics METAPOST complains about: --------------------------- >>>> local_multi_par_area >>>> false ! Equation cannot be performed (numeric=boolean). <to be read again> ; l.218 local_multi_par_area:=false; ? --------------------------- and stops. There are no duplicate ConTeXt mp-files on this machine. The same file works on another Computer. What can the error be? Greetings Lutz

Kerning pairs for Optima-Italic

Hi, after I converted MacOSX's Optima.dfont for usage with TeX I experienced that this Adobe Optima (Regular, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic, ExtraBold) doesn't have extra kerning pairs. (And I don't have any idea how to create these on my own.) So I had a look at WalterSchmidt's page (home.vr-web.de/was/fonts.html), and fortunately he provides files for Regular and Bold - which work fine - but not Italic or BoldItalic fonts. So now I just have to find metric files (including kering pairs) for Adobe Optima-Italic and Optima-BoldItalic. Does anybody can help me with that? Thank you, Steffen.

Shutting down Acrobat Reader.

I am creating an e-book following the example program d-en-all.tex as found on the Context site. I have a question about the "exit" button. This button shuts down the current document but leaves Acrobat Reader still up and running. If the user is in full screen mode he has to do an <alt><esc> to get back to normal mode (from fullscreen) and then exit the Acrobat Reader using a menu. I am looking for a technique that would exit everythig when the user pushes the "exit" button. Interrupted framebox around text.

configuration (texutil?) problem

Hi all! I had to change an operating system temporarly; now I use win98, but I haven't change ConTeXt installation and configuration at all. I'm not sure if win version causes the problem, but I can't see any other reasons... Anyway, the problem is that I can't build a list of contents. A sample zzz.tex file looks like this: \starttext \completecontent \chapter{Some chapter} \section{One section} \section{Another section} \chapter{And one more chapter} \section{And one more section} \stoptext After running such a code with command 'texexec --pdf zzz.tex'. At the end of job texexec says: run time : 4 seconds sorting and checking : running texutil total run time : 4 seconds There is no another run, the file is processed only ones. There is no 'zzz.tuo' in output. So I tried to test texutil running it directly with command 'texutil --references zzz.tui' (not sure if it is correct...). But the strangest thing is that texutil says: action : processing commands, lists and registers error : empty input file zzz.tui Of course zzz.tui is NOT empty. Does anybody know what may be responsible for that? TeXexec version: 2.8 TeXutil version: 7.3 THanks in advance, Pawe/l

I need a special headertext for the first page and a special footertext for the last page. With \firstpage and \lastpage I found no solution. Figure reuse

Dear Contexnicians, I believe that pdfs can make multiple use of pictures (and other objects). I have a fairly large picture which I want to include a number of times, once as the full picture and several other times concentrating on a portion of it. Are there any commands for cropping other than going through metapost? TIA -- Nigel

Hello out there, ... are not what I am going to announce here. But, you can -- if you are brave -- try out the new-on-the-www port of texshow, the ConTeXt command browser. As a bonus, comments can be added to the commands (as in etexshow), but since you are not alone on the www, you can share and enjoy! One day I will add a section for examples. You can then share your favorite examples with all the other ConTeXt users out there. Visual creators for ConTeXt

Hi, I promised link to creators for ConTeXt ;) http://www.im.ps.pl/context/?en (and http://www.im.ps.pl/context/ for polish users) But - please note - there is early pre-beta version ;) I will work to increase functionality and performance of this. It works in IE6 (tested) and Gecko engine browsers (but there are some errors in display). Tables: left mouse button - select, right menu. Flowcharts: left button - inside object - choice type and changing text, 'o' is a connect point... There will be more helps at the site (in the future) :) For now, just try by clicking ;) If anybody has some advices or wishes please contact - I hope I will implement much more than now. PS. I think I will re-implement whole code (now it is awful ;) ) - if somebody want translate to other languages please contact - it will be possible ;) -- Best greetings, Martin

font distribution for Bitstream Vera

Ahoi! There's now a ConTeXt distribution of Bitstream Vera freeware font at my site: http://www.ramm.ch/fiee/texnique/?menu=0-1-4&lang=en (Source of the font is gnome.org, redistribution is allowed, so I packed it.)
