Head titles and section blocks bug in s-pre-60.tex module

Hans, I think there is a bug in your s-pre-60.tex module regarding the step mechanism interacting with section blocks: the head titles disappear each time ConTeXt starts a new section block. I have found a way to solve this problem by putting \StartSteps\StopSteps (empty pair, and it works also with \StartStep\StopStep empty pair) right after the start of each section block, like this for instance: \startbodymatter\StartSteps\Stopsteps blablabla \stopbodymatter. Could you correct this? In my code I use the following shortcut found somewhere: \definefontfamily[palatino][rm][Palatino Linotype][features={default, quality}] Both features works, but I am not sure if I am getting the best quality. Thanks Wolfgang. I could even have sections in the TOC with '\setuptexttexts[{\placerawheaddata[section]}]'. However, how can I start a new page at each new section? The 'page=yes' pair does no longer work with your solution 'placehead=hidden' (since the head is not placed I guess). I also tried 'before=\page' or 'after=\page' without more success. Standalone

On my system I already have Cygwin. I want to install the standalone Context. Which involves basically: mkdir -o /opt/context cd /opt/context wget "http://minimals.contextgarden.net/setup/first-setup.sh chmod 744 first-setup.sh ./first-setup.sh #this works up to this point only partially. - /opt/context/tex is not installed. This is a bad error. It causes - first-setup.sh to fail. And what is loaded will cause conflicts with cygwin which already exists, I believe. I can't see why rsync is use to load anothe versio of rsync in a diff location. #1. Why does 1st setup duplicate Cygwin dlls? I've hurd that having multiple cygwin*.dlls can cause problems. Besideds They already exist and so does luatex.exe for that matter. 'first-setup.sh' should know that it does a test for CYGWIN, but doesn't seem to do anything with it. #2. Also redundant and confusing is first-setup.sh forces the fetching of rsync by an already existing rsync. Is rsync already exists, why fetch another one and put it in a different location. I have texlive for unix on a cygwin platform, on top of an XP system. I want to make installing the standalone easy for cyginw and linux. # # Firstly, exactly what packages are needed for context? # I assume it's one or more of the mtx prefixed programs below. Please advise. - mtx-update.lua - mtxrun.exe - mtxrun.dll - mtxrun.lua - lua52.dll - luatex.dll Is this needed in addition to luatex.exe? - luatex.exe <Note: cygwin has luatex.exe same functionality?> - kpathsea620.dll <Note: TeXLive has kpath related code> I understand that there are not a lot of people experimenting with the latest ConTeXt and even less for the Cygin platform. But, I would like to make it easer and clearer for Cygwin users who do want to experiement with the latest versions. The trouble is that the references already cited in the precedents sections won't appear. Thank you. The unicode text looked good (although reversed left-to-right as I sent it) in my sent mail, and it looked perfect (corrected right-to-left) in your response. But it did not look good in the digest email (all the letters were convered to ?'s). Also it's typesetting fine in ConTeXt except for the vowel placement. Any suggestions there? Thank you again. Hi, how to lower the TOC-title, s.t. it begins with a greater distance to the top? too many open files?

> before=\empty, \empty is not even required. The problem with your solution (setting 'before=' i.e. empty) is that there is also no whitespace before a subsection which doesn't start on a new page. Any better ideas?

resize and center and clip image

Hi! Assume that I want to fill in the text area with images, and I want to clip and scale them according to these rules: 1) If the image is "too wide" (in sense of proportions), then scale it so that the height fits the text area height, center it, and clip it to the text area. (See the attached image, on top, where the blue area is supposed to show the text area and the red rectangle the image.) 2) If the image is "too high" (in sense of proportions), then scale it so that the width fits the text area width, center it, and clip it to the text area. (See the attached image, on bottom.) The background why I want to do this is that I'm making a small template for presentations, and I'd like the users to insert images as background without really having to think about if their proportions fit or not. automatically adding commands to some characters

Dear list, with slashes and en-dashes I experience the following in ConTeXt: sometimes I need to add an \hskip0pt command after them to allow linebreaks. One example would be "Council Directive 93/98/EEC". The issue comes when using ConTeXt as target format from markdown sources. pandoc generates the file, but it makes no sense to edit the ConTeXt source. Is there any command that allows the addition of arbitrary commands when a character appears in text? I mean, a way that internally replaces "Council Directive 93/98/EEC" with "Council Directive 93/\hskip0pt 98/\hskip0pt EEC" Many thanks for your help, Pablo -- http://www.ousia.tk

Position of integral limits

Hi, I notice today that in display math, \int_a^b places a and b completely below and above the integral symbol, rather than offsets them to the right at the bottom and top as LaTeX does by default. I also notice that I can use \int\nolimits to achieve the LaTeX result. Is this the supposed behavior of ConTeXt? Because I remember this was not the case 2 years ago. A new question on \definefallbackfamily

Hi, With the file below (and the latest Standalone) I get different output different times I compile. Sometimes the fourth 3 is bold and sometimes it is not (I don't want it to be bold). What is going on? I attach also the log files from a successful run (test.log) and a failure (test-error.log). Also, the pdf files are attached. (what I want is to use the light font as default and the regular one as bold...) Force two figures to appear on the same page

Dear ConTeXt list, I have multiple figures appearing in a single chapter which are roughly half a page in height. They would fit on top of each other. It seems as if context is only putting floats on top of each other if at least 2 lines of text fit underneath them. How to force two figures which fit on one page to also appear on one page? As you can see in the example below, the chapter would otherwise end with a lengthy list of figures. I'd prefer, if the chapter ends with text. If I'd use `force`, text would stop wrapping around the floats. How to do font fallback for math?

Hi all, Basically I’m trying to use the Neo Euler font for math. It’s missing some symbols, and I would like to fallback to some other fonts. But I’m having trouble setting up this fallback. Hello folks, I just published Mastering ArchiMate - Edition II (See http://bit.ly/1iNacG8) and (as you might have recalled when I discussed this on TeX mailing lists 1.5 years ago) I was unable to do this layout-heavy book in TeX, so I did it in InDesign CS6. I am planning another book which is more text-oriented. Actually. I already have written larger parts of it using ConTeXt. Now I have to decide what to use for final production. I would like to finish this in ConTeXt but I would also like to possibly output EPUB. I preferably do not want to use InDesign anymore. Have work flows been devised to combine PDF production for print and EPUB from a ConTeXt-based source? Yours, G

Synonyms and criterium

Hello, I have a multiple component document that uses \definesynonym. If I build a single component then \placelistofsynonyms with a criterium of "used" performs as expected. But when I run the whole project each \placelistof... displays the list of synonyms used in the entire document. I need to have a common file of synonyms, and place the list of just those used in each chapter, not the entire document. >From what I can tell from the source code, \placelistof... can only show all or used. It does not have a criterium of "chapter" or a reset command available. So what can I do? (I know you prefer a minimal example, but that would require at least three files, and I'm typing on my tablet, which is very slow.) Thanks. -- Chris Kennedy

Line number in "tex error"

Hi, When running the five lines long file \starttext Bla bla \blank[foo] Bla bla \stoptext through context I get the error below (the foo in the blank is there to get an error, see the attached log file for the full log file). My question is why is context first telling me that the error is on line 8 and not 3? (In this particular example this is not a problem, but I'd like to grep for errors in the log file when running through the editor). Hello, I would like to know what is the recommended way to use attributes in Context. I manage to use use them with numbers, i.e. : in Context : \attribute123=1 in Lua : has_attribute(my_node, 123) But I would like to make that cleaner and use named attributes. What is the Context way to declare and set attributes? Is it something like this? \defineattribute[myattr] \dosetattribute{myattr}{1} And how do I then access them from Lua? \setupmathradical[sqrt] crunches denominator in an \over fraction

I have been trying out the newish \setupmathradical[sqrt][alternative=mp], which has been very nice because of the fine control over the radical sign. I've noticed that it crunches the denominator in \sqrt{a\over b} For example: \starttext \placeformula\startformula \sqrt{k\over m}\quad \sqrt{\displaystyle{k\over m}} \stopformula \setupmathradical[sqrt][alternative=mp] \placeformula\startformula \sqrt{k\over m}\quad \sqrt{\displaystyle{k\over m}} \stopformula \stoptext In the first line, the fractions come out fine. In the second line, the first k\over m has a small, inline-math m in the denominator but a display-math k in the numerator. The second sqrt is fine. Is the problem that my plain-TeX habits, from decades using \over, should be over, and that \frac is the recommended way? (This is with the 2014.03.27 beta.) -Sanjoy

Dear All, in my auto-generated two column index (registry) there are several cases of widows - it is the last item of the given letter which overflows to next column/page: --------------- (start page) ------- Usti 29 (!!! - I would expect to place here also one or better two previous entries) V Vamberk 18 ... ... There are also few cases of orphans, but this is not so strange: ... ... Josef 29 K (!!! - both these lines could be moved to the next column/page) Karel 69 ---------------- (end page) --------- In my setup I have defined: \startsetups[grid][mypenalties] \setdefaultpenalties \setpenalties\widowpenalties{2}{10000} % change to {3}{10000} doesn't help \setpenalties\clubpenalties {2}{10000} \stopsetups \setuplayout[grid=yes, setups=mypenalties] It is hard to provide MWE. Spurious missing character log messages

It appears that descriptions generate a spurious Missing character: There is no ^@ (U+0000) in font lmroman12-regular! log message. MWE: \definedescription[oops][] \starttext \oops{Where}is the U+0000? \stoptext The messages appears in the log once for each description in the document. I just noticed that the gradient operator (\triangledown) ends up too low when using Palatino: \setupbodyfont[palatino] \starttext $\triangledown T$ \stoptext It seems about 3pt too low. Dear list, I want a text string to be inserted at the end of every paragraph. I've tried it like that: \define \par {Endstring\endgraf} \starttext \chapter {Chapter} \section {Section} \input knuth \input zapf \stoptext This works, but it results in a lot of additional strings. The string "Endstring" should appear on paragraph ends only (it's acceptable to appear after headings, too). How can I achieve the desired result? Problem with pdf output for FeedARead.com

Colleagues A friend of mine asked me to produce a small book of three of her short stories for FeedARead.com from a word document. On looking at the site I suggested I do a conversion to pdf since it would look much better and FeedARead recommend uploading pdf over word as well. I've had a look on the wiki but haven't found anything obviously wrong in what I've done above. Is their something I'm missing in \definepapersize or \setuppapersize? (Hacks etc. needed, because unfortunately there are no good arabic font, either free or commercial, which can be used for the massive needs of typesetting quran (thats why nearly all used qurans are still written by hand)). Vertically stretched split table

Dear list, if I specify "option=height" with an xtable, a single-page table is stretched vertically to fill the whole textheight. However, I need this feature with a multipage table. Hello, Thank you for the answer. >if you have a proper opentype math Font… As you know, Baskervald doesn’t come with an open type math version. Moreover the mapping mechanism works well with open type text fonts and is powerful and very general. It’s my prefered way of solving my problem. So I reiterate my questions: Question 1: Where do I define my own vector mapping? Should I modify ConTeXt’s source code in the math-ttv.lua file? How do I define my own baskervald-math.lua and what should I write in it (for example for mapping Pagella’s upright mathematic glyphs to Baskervald’s upright glyphs)? Question 2: I am forced to put the goodies file baskervald-math.lfg in Book/Volume1/Chapter1. When I put it in Book and compiled chapter1.tex separately, ConTeXt failed to find it. What should I do to have the file baskervald-math.lfg in the Book directory and make ConTeXt find it when invoked from Book/Volume1/Chapter1. Thank you. Joas.

There is a bug(?) with \starttext \bTABLE \bTR \bTD[orientation=90]{first line\crlf second line}\eTD \bTD{first line\crlf second line}\eTD \eTR \eTABLE \stoptext The second cell is partially written over the first cell. How can I say: Don't do that :-) ?

And this is not a font-issue, as other programms (like Word or CorelDraw) print it correctly with the same unicode char. Could I describe it? Huseyin

Now for some reason that I don't understand no list appears in a subsubject. However if you use instead SUBCVHEAD as an unnumbered section with \definehead[SUBCVHEAD][section] \setuphead[section][header=empty,number=no,style=\bf,after={\blank[small]},before={\blank[small]}] and if you add \page after \placepublications[criterium=cite], then you get separate lists with unnumbered titles. I hope this is what you want. If not, maybe someone les on this list can help you. Best regards, Robert

Hans, the following sample shows three long-standing issues with ConTeXt (I’m afraid they might be bugs): \definestructureconversionset[chapternumbers][0,I,a,n,g][n] \setupheads[sectionconversionset=chapternumbers] \setupsectionblock[bodypart][page=no] \setupheadertexts[chapter] \setupinteraction[state=start] \placebookmarks[chapter] \starttext \chapter{\TeX} \input knuth\par \startfrontmatter \dorecurse{5}{\chapter{Front matter} \input zapf\par} \stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter \dorecurse{5}{\chapter{Body matter} \input zapf\par} \stopbodymatter \stoptext 1. PDF bookmarks don’t contain Roman capital numerals (as I think they should). 2. \setupsectionblock[...][page=no] causes the last page in bodypart to have its header removed. 3. \chapter{\TeX} causes bookmarks from bodymatter to be located before bookmarks from frontmatter. I have tested this file against ConTeXt from TeX Live 2013 (2013.05.28 00:36), ConTeXt Suite stable (2014.01.03 00:40), and latest beta (2014.04.06 13:09). The first step is tro to make for each of them a .bbl-file with, what I would call, a "bbl-generator.tex": ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \setupbibtex[database=ps.bib,sort=author] %\setupbibtex[database=ss.bib,sort=author] \setuppublications[alternative=apa] %or any other style \starttext \stoptext ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This can be processed with mkii or mkiv. It generates a lot of auxiliary files, including an empty pdf, but the only important one is "bbl-generator.bbl", which you rename to ps.bbl or ss.bbl according to which of the two bib-files you used.(= did not comment out) The other files you need are two .tex-files with the complete set of \nocite[]'s of the two databases. Personally I never used \nocite{*}. If you use a Mac with BibDesk it is quite easy to make such a file. It gives you some extra flexibility.
