Colleagues I'm setting up a document which at the end of each chapter will have a Glossary of word definitions. To get to these definitions one would click on the word in the chapter which would take them to the page where the definition of the word is in the Glossary. Once the user has done this, they could then click on the definition to go back to the original word in the chapter. \footnote works after a fashion, however I would like the word to be clickable and the definition not to appear at the bottom of the page. It's not really what I want. Is there another way to get the functionality I'm looking for? Thanks Best Wishes Keith McKay

setups not working

Framed text and page breaks

Colleagues I've been struggling today with trying to change paragraph width of selected paragraphs within the body text of a novel I'm typesetting. I thought that the way to do this would be by framing the text that I would like to reduce the paragraph width off. However the framed text doesn't seem to honour page breaks and just seems to disappear off the page bottom. Also the framed text starts on a new page which I do not want to happen. Any suggestions on how I may go about solving this problem? Placement of a figure

Footnote with midaligned text

As the following example shows, just trying to add a footnote to a midaligned sentence is not that easy: either the footnote index is (dis)placed to the right margin or the footnote body does not show at its proper place (at the end of the page). Is there a way to make both things fit? Chapter precis

Some old fashioned novels have a chapter précis in the table of contents. In Latex exists the command \chapterprecis to put the text at the beginning of the chapter and in the able of contents. I thought, I can realize this in ConTeXt with \writebetweenlist[chapter]{XYZ} or with \weitetolist[chapter]{XYZ} But both produce only a fatal error. What’s wrong here? Thanks für help! WH

E-books and XML.

Context is moving toward accepting XML input, although the filtering process is necessarily complex. But what is also needed is a version of Context that produces well formed XML as an output. That would be a step toward producing a dual purpose document with Context, for print and for e-book use. Context users have invested time, often years, in learning how to write Context code. Writing XML is a whole other skillset, comparable to writing xhtml. So is writing a Context to XML converter a possibility? A probability? hyperlinks with special characters

I have already asked this question on Stackexchange. It appears that no one who has seen the question knows an answer. I figure I'll ask here too, just to cover all bases. I need to link to some online resources in my PDF file. Based on the official documentation, I have written: > \useURL[dbdk] [http://dbpedia.org/page/The_Dark_Knight_(film)] [] [it's link to DBPedia] > > Lorem ipsum \goto{the LinkedMDB.org entry on The Dark Knight}[url(http://data.linkedmdb.org/page/film/6224)], and \from[dbdk] dolor sit amet. Note my code for the link to DBpedia: I had to write it in this convoluted way, instead of using my preferred \goto, because the link has the special characters, `(` and `)`. These characters interfered with `url()`. I can't use HTML's URL encoding scheme because the `%`s interfere with TeX. Is there another escape code format in ConTeXt for use within `\goto{...}[url(...)]`? Using the suggestion by @phg, I tried the following: > \startasciimode > Lorem ipsum \goto{the LinkedMDB.org entry on The Dark Knight}[url(http://data.linkedmdb.org/page/film/6224)], and \goto{it's link to DBPedia}[url(http://dbpedia.org/page/The_Dark_Knight_%28film%29)] dolor sit amet. > \stopasciimode I still had to use escape codes, `%28` and `%29`, to keep it from interfering with url(). Startparagraph oddities

There appears to be an inconsistency in the implementation of \startparagraph. When it is used with one argument (or two by my reading of the source) it defines \stopparagraph with a terminal \endgraf, yet with no arguments this is not done. Strangely (to me) it also appears to insert a line-break before \startparagraph[]. The example below demonstrates these issues. I would expect to have \endgraf inserted with each \stopparagraph regardless of the argument count. There is also a wiki issue with overloading of the command name \startparagraph. The existing command entry points to the paragraphs mechanism for setting up parallel paragraphs in columns. There is also a \startParagraph command described for the t-pararef module. There is no mention of \startparagraph in the \startsection page, which might be an appropriate place. XML, XHTML, and HTML export issue with & in URL

With the following example, the output xml writer fails to properly transform & to the html entity & in some urls; \hyphenatedurl works fine. The generated xhtml and html files have this problem as well as more issues with the transformation, including what appears to be mistaken transformation of < and > to html entities and unbalanced <link> tags. When a URL without & is used, the problems do not appear. I used the default export-example.css file, and I assume that the lack of interaction in the result reflects the lack of coding for links in that file. Font (roboto) and math font - error

Hi, I am switching all my docs to the roboto font as I just like the look of that font. During this I ran into a problem with \item: ! Math error: parameter \Umathquad\displaystyle is not set. .. l.26 \item h ere we list the points, In my example: as soon I enable any of the two \definetypeface lines I am running into that error.. even if I only enable the math font. changing pre-fuzzy stlye

Dear all, I am preparing a presentation using pre-fuzzy and I would like to make a modification without altering the style if possible. It turns out that the meeting I am attending is not using a projector but a kind of huge monitor with very low frequency and, as a result, a bright background is unpleasent on the eyes because of that frequency. I would like to change the background to black and the text to white. I am unsure where to do this without modifying the main file for the style pre-fuzzy. Any hint will be appreciated. thanks

\in, \at but without font/color change in the PDF

Suppose I want to make a fully classical flat text without interaction (no clickable links in the PDF). How do I get this? If I use \in or \at, ConTeXt turns them into clickable links. That is not my problem so much, but it also changes font to bold and colour to green, and I do not want that. What do I need to do to make the text classic, that is without font and colour change? G

bibliography problems

I have set up: \setuppublications[numbering=short] \setupcite[short] but the \cite commands show (Author, Year) and not the short code and the \placepublications does not indent the entries enough, hence the item entry’s first column (the short code) overlaps with the actual entry. How do I fix these? Can’t find it on the wiki or in the bibmod-doc.pdf G

issues with footnotes

Dear list, using beta from 2014-08-21 09:59, I’m trying to generate a document that has two bodies of notes: footnotes and linenotes. Since the document isn’t minimal, I include only the notes definitions: \definenote[dict] \setupnote[dict][setups=setups:linenote, n=2, rule=off, split=verystrict, scope=text, inbetween=\hskip1.5em] \setupnotation[dict][number=no, width=broad] \definelinenote[grammatical] \setupnote[grammatical][setups=setups:linenote, rule=off, paragraph=yes, split=verystrict, scope=text, inbetween=\hskip1.5em, compress=yes] \setupnotation[grammatical][numbercommand=, alternative=serried, distance=1em] The output can be found at http://www.ousia.tk/unbalanced-columns.pdf. In all four pages, columns in footnotes are unbalanced. Is there any way to get balanced columns in footnotes? The second issue is that the columnar footnotes don’t respect space before and after defined in \setupnote. How can I avoid this? (BTW, this also happens with the space before when paragraph=yes.) BTW, if I add the following code to avoid widows and orphans: \setuplayout[setups=*lessstrict] \startsetups[*lessstrict] \setup[reset] \widowpenalty=10000 \clubpenalty=10000 \brokenpenalty=0 \stopsetups The footnotes aren’t displayed in columns at all (http://www.ousia.tk/no-columns.pdf) Is there no way that I can avoid widows and orphans for the body text? Multi-page centered natural TABLE

Hi! How do I use a natural table to produce a table which is both: - distributed across multiple pages (split=yes) and - centered horizontally on each page. Using simplefonts and font protrusion in MKIV

How do I combine simplefonts and font protrusion using a font family like Minion for the main font and Myriad for the sans? I have both texlive 2014 and stand alone context dated about June 8. I can use either. -- John Culleton

Fany break - no solution?

May be it’s my fault, but I didm’ see any solution for this strange problem with the fancy break module. I must say that I didn’t the end of the conversation because it was to technical. So I don’t know yet: Is it my fault, must I change something? Or is it a problem with TexLive? Who can tell me what to do? Thanks!

Forcing a subheading page break

What do I need to get *every* heading in \setuphead to be started on a new page, including the first instance? \stopquotation and \endnote

Is it possible to use \startquotation..\stopquotation and have an endnote number follow the closing ''? If the \endnote is before \stopquotation, it ends up inside the '' character at the end. If it is after \stopquotation, it becomes the beginning of the next paragraph. G

[doifinset] how it works ?

Hello, I'm currently prepping my teaching material for my back-to-university. I want to design some conditional slides based presentation where I can select the slides that I want to show in my final presentation. My current attempt is to use : 1 - MKIV as I use currently only MKII; 2 - a counter is defined, that it is incremented at each slide definition; 3 - a commalist to indicate the slides that I want. Selecting character by glyph index

Dear consortium, Is there a command analogous to \char or \fontchar which allows me to select a glyph by its index in the font? In most font editors you can choose "Index Mode" which shows the "physical" ordering of the glyphs independent of encoding etc. I thought that \charNN (where 'NN' is a decimal integer) did this, but it does not seem to select the correct indexed glyph for a \definefont, making me wonder in MkIV has changed its behavior. For example, choosing \char35 gives me glyph index 223, not glyph 35. In any case, for the current (already tedious) project this is a feature that is sorely needed; if there is a way to hack a quick lua-based command to do it, I would appreciate any help I can get. Perhaps a future version of \fontchar can add this as an option... '#' is probably active and being used in the internals, so of course I can't directly use it as an argument parameter. How do I work around it? 2. The '#1' at the end of '\gulistan' is meant to complete the name of a defined font, then that same parameter is used as a name in the next row. Am I doing this correctly? I.e., can I use an argument parameter to finish off a command like this? [Yes, my low level TeX is really quite rusty]. 3. Installing modules

I would like to use the module fancy break. I downloaded the module and have now a directory »t-facybreak-2013« which contains the subdirectories »doc« and »tex«. If I understand the website text well, I must go to the directory which is in the variable $TEXMF. But it seems, there is no such variable. »ECHO $TEXMF« brings an empty line. I found a directory /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/context where I put the directory »third« from the module directory. Then I made context --generate. The effect is zero: I get the message »Module not found«. Can anybody tell me how to install this module? Thanks WH

This is a totally original design, using the Knuthian letters as inspiration. Indeed, virtually all Arabic characters were developed on the foundation of a study of the Latin Modern Mono letters 'l', 'r', and 'c'. In other words, this is a genuine extension of the original Knuthian design to an authentic and culturally authentic Arabic typing font. 6. There are two versions of the font: ps and tt. The Type~1 version is for print applications (and usually the default for TeX). The TrueType version is for on-screen applications such as text editors. Hinting in the tt version is much better for on-screen, at least on Microsoft Windows. 7. The most unique feature of Arabic-Latin Modern is in its treatment of vowels and diacritics. Each vowel and diacritic (ALM Fixed contains a total of 68 such glyphs) can now be edited horizontally within any text editor or processor. I believe this is the very first opentype Arabic font ever to have this capability. Editing complex Arabic texts will now be much easier to input and to proofread. 8. At least 12 additional format characters are included; see almfixed-dtk.pdf for details. Also designed a glyph representation for U+00A0 (no-break space), as well as U+25CC (dotted circle). 9. Bug with vimtyping: no line numbers

I think there is a bug in the (latest) beta that was not there earlier this year. Footnote Placement in Columnsets

Dear all, a couple of days ago I asked about placing footnotes in columnsets in only the first column. I haven't received an answer and found this http://skryb.info/m/ntg-context%40ntg.nl/45C100C2.5050500%40econ.muni.cz on Google, which is basically the same question and also unanswered. So I just thought I try again: I use a two columns columnsets layout and want to place the footnotes in the first column only. I tried \setupnotation[footnote][ location=firstcolumn] but this didn't work as expected it puts the footnotes into both columns. If it is not possible to do this, I need to know. I am using the current version of ConTeXt that comes with the MacTeX-2014 Distribution. Cheers, David PS: I am new to mailing lists like this, so I wasn't sure if I should post it again or wait. Distances between chapter and setion titles and text

Dear list, Is it possible, in mkiv, to fine-tune the distance between a chapter head and a section head, between the end of a section and the following section head, and between a section head and the beginning of the text? My problem is the following: In the revision of a thesis, to economize on processing times, I have done all corrections in the bodymatter, or even parts of it, using the setups of the entire project. But when I now add the front matter these above-mentioned distances have slightly increased, by 3 to 5 mm, with a rather devastating effect on the precise placement of large floats. At the beginning of a new chapter the difference is one textline (double line spacing), which does not seem a big deal but with nearly 500 pages of text it leads to nasty results. I have a standard structure using \startfrontmatter\stopfrontmatter Part of the front matter is the table of contents, but (as with every chapter in my book) the RHS is where the chapter starts, but on the opposing page LHS there is something too (mostly a quote or so). This is done with \startsetups chapter:before \page[left] \noheaderandfooterlines \startalignment[left,nothyphenated] \startnarrower[4*left] \em \getbuffer[chapter:quote] \stopnarrower \stopalignment \resetsetups[quote:text] \page[right] \noheaderandfooterlines \blank[force,2*big] \stopsetups My main product file has \startfrontmatter \startbuffer [chapter:quote] A Quote\crlf {\tf An author} \stopbuffer \completecontent \component c_introduction \stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter Now, before the content chapter and after that initial title page, I get two empty pages, which is right. Hello! \definerule seems to be only supported in ConTeXt mkii but not in ConTeXt mkiv. Is there a reason for this? Would anyone mind porting it to mkiv since this seems to be the standard now? Thanks for any help. Christoph

Citation Sort Order

The documentation (http://www.ntg.nl/maps/26/12.pdf) suggests that the order of citations can be changed using "sorttype=cite". The example code below writes a 6 in the document. I thought by setting the sorttype to "cite" that the bibliography order would be determined based on the order that the "cite" macros occur in the document. If I have understood correctly, then the sample document should write a 1 in the document. Any idea why 6 is written instead of 1? Hi all, Just to let you know Hans will not be responding to any email messages for the next two weeks as unexpectedly, over the weekend he had immediate laser surgery to re-attach one of his retinas. Everything will be fine, so do not panic! But, on doctors’ orders, he is not allowed to read for the next two weeks, to give the eye the best chance to heal properly. So: no email, no programming, and no leisure reading. Bug with vimtyping: no line numbers

I think there is a bug in the (latest) beta that was not there earlier this year. Multi-par footnotes. Indent second and later paragraphs?

I have a few footnotes that are longer. New paragraphs are not indented, I’d like to have everything except the first paragraph indented. By hand is OK, but the only thing I can think of is a couple of ~ at the start of each new par, not very nice and it doesn’t by definition align perfectly. Is there a nicer way? G

Hi, I have a 2-columns-layout, implemented via columnset. I want the footnotes on each page to appear only in the first on odd and only on the right column on even pages. I tried "setupfootnotes[location=firstcolumn]" for a start, but it did not influence the layout (the footnotes are still in both columns). Is this the wrong way to do it, or is it not possible to have footnotes in only one column in columnsets?vid Thank you very much in advance, David

Custom breakpoints for \hyphenatedurl

Dear list, I could successfully configure ConTeXt to introduce linebreaks /after/ some characters in URLs with \sethyphenatedurlafter {...} I would also like to disable linebreaks /before/ some of the predefined characters. For example, no linebreak should occur before : Is this possible? \sethyphenatedurlbefore {} (with empty braces) does not work. Unfortunately, usage of \sethyphenatedurlafter also introduced the following problem: the \hyphenatedurlseparator symbol now appears after the linebreak, i.e. at the beginning of the new line. Dear list, I have a problem with the small letter h when I do a \definefallbackfamily. Example: \definefontfamily [myface] [rm] [TeX Gyre Pagella] \definefallbackfamily[myface][math][TeX Gyre Termes][preset=math:lowercaseitalic] \definefontfamily[myface][math][TeX Gyre Pagella Math] \setuppagenumbering[state=stop] \setupbodyfont[myface] \starttext $h$ \stoptext I get the h set in Pagella. With any other letter I get Termes... In my real example I do not want to replace with Termes but with a font (FrutigerLTstd) that does not have a math version. It seems (when I look with gnome character map), that the letter h is missing (or, probably, to be found elsewhere) from all fonts. Is there any chance I can fix this substitution manually for the letter h? /Mikael

Accessibility

Dear all, I am trying to produce an accessible document using ConText. Tagging with MkIV works, but in order to ensure that the resulting PDF meets accessibility requirements, I'd like to pass Acrobat Pro's accessibility check. I stumbled across the following questions so far: 1.) Is it possible to produce a tagged pdf document that either tags the page numbers as part of the content, or as a non-textual element? Acrobat Pro's accessibility checker complains that the page number is not tagged at all in produced PDFs. 2.) Is it possible to provide an alternative text for an included image? I cannot find an option for \externalfigure that would provide an alt-text for an image (and hence, Acrobat Pro complains) 3.) Is it possible to ensure that the document language in the resulting PDF is set? I.e. \mainlanguage[en] will not result in a PDF where the language is set, and thus Acrobat Pro complains. kind regards

I guess there is a something like (inline) "verbatim" mode which makes ~ (and maybe % $ etc.) visible... Problem with List of Abbreviations Dear all, In my list of abbreviations I need different styles for different types of entry. A typical case is titles of journals, of which both the abbreviation and the full name should be slanted. I had it working, albeit with some tricks, with older versions of mkiv, up till 25-01, but with more recent versions things don’t work anymore. Also the setup-commands seem to have been changed: In recent versions the pair: definesynonyms[abbreviation][abbreviations][\infull][\inshort] \setupabbreviations[textstyle=slanted,synonymstyle=slanted,criterium=all] gives en error message about an undefined control sequence. In the following minimal example I have listed what I could find as possibilities. The top three work with older versions. In the bottom three, for the recent mkiv, both textstyle and synonymstyle remain normal. In the older versions only the abbreviation could be made slanted the way, but I could make the synonym slanted with {\em entry} , and I still could do that, but this cannot be done with the abbreviation. Date format problems

Hi all, I started using ConteXt a while ago, on the side line I still use LaTeX (old habits die hard). When converting my CV to ConTeXt I have a weird date problem. I hope one of you can point me in the right direction. I copy the start of the document from vi (line 4 is the relevant line): \setuppapersize[A4] 2 \setuplayout[style=\ss] 3 %\setupfooter[style=] 4 \setuplanguage[nl][date={dd, -, mm, -, year}] 5 6 \setupheadertexts[CV Guus Bonnema] 7 \setupfootertexts[\currentdate][pagenumber] 8 9 %\definebodyfont[10pt][ss][tfe=lbr at 105pt] 10 Line 4 is the relevant line here. What I expect to see in the footer is a date like either 29-07-2014 or 29 july 2014, but what I get is July 29, 2014. Also the log seems to indicate language en. How to center floats (?) in standardmakeup?

Hello everyone, I am trying to create a title page with \startstandardmakeup[align=middle] This works alright for text, but when I am trying to insert a "\framed", a table or an "\externalfigure", those items (floats?) don't get centered.
