Citing a PhD dissertation

Dear gang, ConTeXt currently follows archaic BibTeX conventions in labeling doctoral dissertations for bibliography. So we have the tag 'phdthesis' as in \startpublication[k=hamid98, t=phdthesis, a=Hamid, y=1998, s=ISH98] \author[]{Idris Samawi}[I.]{}{Hamid} \title{The Metaphysics and Cosmology of \TeX} \pubname{\TeX\ State University} \pubyear{1998} \stoppublication The tag gets mapped to 'PhD thesis' in the output. But current English style is to use 'thesis' for Masters degrees and 'dissertation' for doctoral degrees [See the Merriam-Webster Style Manual or even google 'phd thesis or dissertation' for lots of confirmation of this]. As development of a new mkiv module continues, I would suggest changing this to the standard usage. In the meantime: How can I change the label in the current bibliography system? More headache with \setuphead

Related post: section with \sethupead[section][alternative=text]; other type of section misbehaves.. Hello list, It seems I have more problems with \setuphead, which I can't get hold on. This time content misbehaves in way I can't understand. Here are the relevant definitions/commands: \setuphead[chapter] [header=nomarking, command=\MyChapterCommand, aligntitle=yes, align={flushleft,nothyphenated,verytolerant}] \setuphead[content] [command=, textcommand=\MyContentCommand] What I expect this set of definitions to do is to indeed perform \MyChapterCommand for a chapter to typeset the title of a chapter. For the table of contents, I hoped that it would not do the command, which I set for chapter (by clearing that option with =,), and instead perform the textcommand \MyContentCommand. However from my output it is clear that the table of content still does \MyChapterCommand. As a workaround, I postponed setting \setuphead for chapter till after the content. But why does this not work? Even if content is supposedly doing the same thing as chapter does, it I make thereafter changes to content, and in fact "undo" the command setting and instead direct it to perform a textcommand, I don't expect it to still perform \MyChapterCommand. But it does that. Interactive table of content -- jumps always 1 page too far

Hello list, Having the problem that if I jump to a chapter or section by clicking on the interactive table of content (while the page numbers presented do match the actual page number where the chapter or section begins) always leads me to jumping one page too far. I've tried to produce a MWE, but failed so far, even if I add all the commands and setups which could affect page numbering, it doesn't reproduce the error. I didn't do setting the userpage number by hand. In fact the page number is off by 2 from the real page number, caused by a makeup title page, which does not do page counting (btw. is there a way to force a custom title page makeup to DO count the page number?) and an extra page coming right after it before the table of contents. Setting the right page number on the table of contents page solves that, but clicking an entry in the table of contents still sends me one page too far. Can anyone guid me on where to look or what to try to solve this nasty problem? Thanks. Greetings, Rob

publications in footnotes (new bibliography mkiv)

I have to prepare a paper in literary science. I need to be able to quote a reference in a footnote instead of a in-text reference. Such a footnote should look the same or similar as the entry in the publications list. I guess that I have to do \setupbtxcitevariant and \definebtxcitevariant but then I am stuck. It would be great if one could put a separate page number/range for every footnote. Is there maybe already a mechanism for that? Greetings Jörg

bibliography again: “von” and “van”

The default way to diplay (inverted) names with “von” and “van” is “von Goethe” and “van Halen” in in-text references and “von Goethe, Johann Wolfgang” and “van Halen, Edward”. The problem with this is that while AFAIK the Dutch “van Halen” means that one of his ancestors came ”from” a place/city called “Halen” in German names the “von” is always a sign of nobility. Even long before monarchy and nobility was abolished in Germany by the revolution of 1919 you would not have talked about “von Goethe” but simply “Goethe”–so in a reference it would be “(Goethe 1774)” and “Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von” in the publications list, but still “(van Halen 1984)” and “van Halen, Edward”. It would be nice if you could switch between two modes while invoking the citation. I have not yet discovered where this order is defined. Greetings Jörg

Strange bug in interactive table of content...

A right parenthesis ')' shows up as black in the interactive table of contents (which otherwise displays as green). It seems to matter what characters come before and after the right parenthesis for this bug to show up. The LaTeX package "footmisc" provides the "inline footnotes" by the option "para". But, if I understand right, LaTeX packages are not compatible with ConTeXt.

And, yes, I had to tweak the apa -style a little but that part was easy. bibliography: alignment of first hanging lines in publications list, hyphenation

Attached are a MWE using plain APA and the corresponding BibTeX file. (Don’t mind the mistakes regarding series/volumes, I got that working in my personal setup that overrides plain APA.) APA style defaults with hanging indents in the publications list. The respectively hanging first lines of each entry in the publications list are not properly aligned on the left. (The indented lines are). I would like all of those first lines to start on the very left of the textfield. If I use \hyphenation to prevent e.g. names from being hyphenated those words might be driven into the right margin. Hanging punctuation doesn’t seem to work as well. Is there anything that can be done about that? Or how can the justification be switched to flush left/ragged right with hanging indents on the left? Greetings Jörg PS: And by the way, “\placebtxrendering[criterium=all]” is not working anymore. I think I had it working before to place all entries from the BibTeX file into the publications list regardless of their actual appearance in the text as citations–which was a good way to test only the publications list’s layout.

Announcement: kfreebsd binaries

Hello, Kfreebsd is a Debian/GNU distribution built upon a freebsd kernel rather than a linux kernel. I have been building binaries for kfreebsd 64bit and 32bit systems (as well as both freebsd and linux binaries). However, we do not believe that anyone is downloading and using these binaries. Unless someone asks that we continue to provide kfreebsd binaries, we intend on dropping support for them in the Context standalone distribution. We shall continue providing both freebsd and linux binaries. Alan P.S. linux binaries typically suffer from glibc compatibility issues. We attempt to build them on systems that are old enough (read outdated) so that they will work for all users. Freebsd does not suffer from such issues, but kfreebsd binaries do to some extent, making its support slightly more complicated.

Formatting bibliographic inline references and publications list

Hello everybody, I am rather new to ConTeXt and I am momentarily stuck with the following: How can I further format the way an inline reference and a bibliographic reference in the publications list are displayed? For example I would like to display the author(s) in spaced-out small caps (I am using the “letterspace” module). The year should be in oldstyle numbers both in the inline reference and in the publications list. Hi! I'm trying to learn ConTeXt working through some examples I found on Context Garden and the internet. Since I already have TeX Live 2014 installed I could run most of the examples. When I ran into a problem, I installed the standalone version and compared the supplied modules. The following modules are not part of Context in TeX Live 2014. > animation/ GPL 3 > annotation/ GPL 3 > cmscbf/ GPL 2 on CTAN > cmttbf/ GPL 2 on CTAN > fancybreak/ GPL 3 > layout/ GPL > title/ GPL 3 > urwgaramond/ GPL 2 on CTAN > urwgothic/ Public Domain on CTAN > visualcounter/ Simplified BSD License Some are on CTAN, some are missing there. Since TeX Live takes the files from CTAN, it would be nice to put the missing modules there. What is the correct way to do that? I ask because I want to give a tutorial about ConTeXt at the Dante meeting in april and it would be nice to tell the audience that everything they need is already part of TeX Live and no extra installation is required. Getting copy-pastable ligatures?

I’m using mkii. I’d like ot be able to copy-paste words form the resulting pdf. That works well, except for words that contain ligatures (e.g. fl fi etc.) Is there a way I can tell (Con)TeXt that the result must be copy-pastable. There seems to be a bug in the new MkIV bibliographic engine regarding the differentiation of the “editor” variable into “Editor” (singular) and “Editors” (plural) from BibTeX. I have attached a BibTeX file with only two books, one is a “book” naming one “editor” instead of an “author”, the other is of the “incollection” type and issued by several editors. In the BibTeX file I have used the uninverted names combined with “and”. The same bug applies if you delete all but one editors from the “incollection” example. In the following MWE I have changed the language to English and the style to the pure default APA. Simple tocs

In this country, and perhaps elsewhere, the front matter in a technical book will have two tables of contents, one listing just major titles (e.g., just chapters and titles or just parts, chapters and titles) followed by another one that lists sections also. letter booklet

Desired outcome: a multipage booklet on letter size paper with margins lined up when duplex printed and folded. Hi, I went from PSTricks to Metapost (Metafun) gradually. For positioning arrows between two values in an array of variations, I used a command like this \ ncline {A}{B}, which avoids fumbling. Can we do the same with Metapost ? Dear gang, I'm currently writing a paper with very basic typographical needs: blockquotes, emphasis, bibliography, perhaps a graphic or two. The publisher wants the thing in Word, naturally. The last time I did something like this I set up a markdown document and just exported it to both docx and to context. For simple documents this is at least workable, but I'd prefer to write in context, not markdown. Now it's been a while since I've experimented with ConTeXt and epub. From lightly perusing the list it seems that there has been considerable movement on this front. So my question: Has anyone here succeeded in the following workflow: context -> xml -> docx [perhaps via pandoc]? If so, do any of you have any samples of such a workflow that work with the latest context? Or am I stuck with markdown? Using luacode

What I attempt to do is to write a function in lua which computes the position of one or several bottom tabs depending on : line number (1 is the lowest, 2 is above etc), number of tabs, horizontal position of the tab on the line. filter module's inline command and supressed spacing

Hello list, It looks like a bug in the filter module, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any help will be greatly appreciated. When using the \inlinepandoc command in the first paragraph below the space at the end of the paragraph in "życiaA. Mickiewicza" is supressed when it should be "życia A. Mickiewicza". This does not happen when using pandoc environment. If you want to run the minimal example you have to make sure you got the recent pandoc which supports twiki input format and create the "output" subdirectory in your working directory. Hello, marks of attachments in the attached MWE are aligned in the following way: - after A and C - horizontally, - after B - vertically. The only difference is that \blank precedes in the B case. How to draw this picture?

I am working on an economic book, which I convert from a paper edition into a digital edition, which contains some figures I want to recreate using context or other tool. In logical terms, the picture represents some economic figures and visualizes how some figure (e.g. "National income" and the amount) is the sum of some other figures, in which it can be split up. In logic terms the figure then explains that: A can be split up into B and C. B can be split up into D and E. D is F. E can be split into G,H,I and K. Graphically this is depicted like a table containing 4 columns and 5 rows, and the "split into" is drawn as two diagonal lines (one right-up and another righ down) which shows how the element on the left column is split up into the elements on the right column using the diagonal lines that center in the left element, drawn to the right top and right bottom element. I worked this out into context as a simple table, and used instead of the diagonal lines only vertical lines. Which is less expressive, but still visualizes the splitting sufficiently I hope. But I would like to rework this picture, using a brace instead of a vertical line, similar to how in a formula one uses mathcases. I tried to use mathcases, but it seems mathcases can't be nested?? I was thinking of other solutions, like replacing the vertical line with a small column in which to put a vertical stretched brace symbol, at the appriopriate lowered cell, but don't know how the vertical stretch a glyph. What is the best way to code this in ConText? (preferred is to use the symbol left brace.) Catalan especial character (l·l) in ConTeXt

Hello, I am Catalan, and we use frequently the geminated character ( l· ), that not is showed correctly in ConTeXt. Dot is too much separated of 'l' characters. How can I control character spacing by default? I have seen Fontfeaturefiles page in wiki for create ligatures and control kerning. But my attempts have failed. Do you think it is a good choice? I keep trying? Explanation extended: ================= Typing normally, catalans use "flow dot" character ( · ) between 'l' (l·l), that in spanish keyboard is located over key '3'. Other option is use special utf-8 characters (Ŀ) and (ŀ), but this character is not in any keyboard, and must changed before compile with ConTeXt (I use SED command). But none of these options is good. hi, I have some problems with adjusting figure captions. what I want: 1. constant caption width across all figures, possibly identical to text width 2. trailing the auto-incrementing figure number with a fixed character, e.g. a `:', while still being able to cross-reference to the figure without the `:' occuring as part of the reference (i.e. it should read "Figure 1: caption_goes_here" and the cross-reference then should read "see Figure 1" rather than "see Figure 1:". Using something like \setupcaptions[width=0.9\textwidth, numberstopper={:}] sort of works except that cross references than include the "numberstopper" `:' in the reference ("see Figure 1:") which is really awkward. so how can this be solved (adjust the numberstopper in the caption without affecting how the figure label/number appears in cross-references)? regarding the caption width it seems that of the predefined keywords (fit, broad, max) only the first one is understood correctly (presuming it means "fit to figure width" -- I did not find an explanation anywhere). `width=max' does not maximize the width (rather it is smaller than with `width=fit' in some of my figures) and `width=broad' throws an error ("! Delayed page layout change?

Hi, I'm new to ConTeXt (although have used LaTeX in various ways over a long time) and am impressed! Many thanks for a great system. I'm wanting some pages in a book to have a different layout to others, and am using \definelayout and \setuplayout to do so. This all works, including adding layers to the different layouts. However the layout change (specified by \setuplayout) occurs immediately after the command is given, which means following paragraphs on the page have the layout's new width and not the width used for earlier text on the page: i.e: + + xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx <-- \setuplayout xxxxx xxxxx + + + + xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx + + Is there anyway to defer the change in layout so that it occurs when the next page starts?? I can obviously force my own page breaks using \page and give \setuplayout immediately afterwards, but this doesn't allow for paragraph text to flow over the page boundary. Thank you. David Brooks

The \ConTeXt macro and sans serif fonts

I want to use the \ConTeXt macro (so the colofon says \ConTeXt was used), but I'm using the Optima font. The result is pretty ugly. With a standard serif font that looks OK, as the n of Con would touch the serif of the upper side of the T if moved more to the right but with a sans serif font, a 'hole' exists between Con and TeXt: Is it OK to define my own \ConTeXt so that the kerning is more pleasing? G PS. I'm obviously close to finsihing the book if this is what I worry about.

I’ve come across what seems to be a very old bug (I have found references to it in the mailing list from about 10 years ago): I get an unwanted page break after every column environment. Maximum width of a caption

Hi, Is there any way to set the maximum width of a caption? I would like to make sure that no figure caption exceeds, say, 75% of text width. how to (re)set section numbers

I have followed the recommendations how to include unnumbered sections in the table-of-content along the lines \setuphead[subject] [incrementnumber=yes,number=no] etc. this works OK if the unnumbered sections are at the end of the document. otherwise the enumeration of the actually (visibly) numbered sections is messed up (i.e. if a `subject' section goes, e.g. _before_ all actually enumerated sections, there counters are off by one). question: what is the best way of (re)setting the section counters? i.e. if the doucment structure is, e.g., \subject \section \subsection \section \subject I'd like to end up with the ToC containing entries for all subjects and sections but the numbered sections should occur (in ToC and document) as 1, 1.1, 2 rather than 2 2.1, 3 (in this example). Using Euler with simplefonts

Hi. I am trying to use the simplefonts approach to get Euler for math, along with TeX Gyre fonts for text. I've looked at some of the past list archives and I haven't yet been able to figure this out. I use TeXLive, and my context is 2014.05.21.20140528-1 (Debian version). Here is the font blurb: \definefontfamily [myfamily] [serif] [Linux Libertine O] \definefontfamily [myfamily] [math] [Tex Gyre Schola Math] Now, I have tried changing the "TeX Gyre Schola Math" to Neo Euler, Euler and some other variants, but it doesn't work. I do have the Euler VM fonts installed on my system. I have also tried the example program given in http://www.ntg.nl/maps/32/06.pdf \definetypeface[eulermath][mm][math][euler][euler][rscale=1] \setupbodyfont [eulermath] \starttext \showmathcharacters \stoptext This works with texexec, but with context, it chokes. Could you please provide me some pointers? Thanks. Kumar

I posted a similar question a few days ago without success/response but since I have not found a solution anywhere I would like to ask this again: how can I get properly enumerated equations using `\mathcases'? this example does not work: \starttext bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla \placeformula \startformula E(f) = \frac {K_1(f)} {f} \stopformula \placeformula \startformula K_1 \rightarrow \startmathcases \NC f \NC for $f \ll PS$ (flow limited transport) \NR \NC PS \NC for $f \gg PS$ (diffusion limited transport) \NR[+] \stopmathcases \stopformula bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla \stoptext since (as I now have "discovered" myself) the `\NR[+]' is here intended for subcases enumeration (which are, thus not aligned with the right margin0, rather than (like with \mathalign) for whole equation numbering. but omitting the `[+]' does not help either since \placeformula simply does not put an equation number at all. so, simple question: how to get a properly numbered equation using \mathcases? thx,joerg

g parameter in tabulate stopped working

When preparing my last invoices for 2014, I stumpled upon an error in tabulation: \starttext \setuptabulate[distance=0pt] \starttabulate[|lw(7.75cm)|rg(,)w(2cm)|rg(,)w(2cm)|cg(,)w(3cm)|] \NC Text \NC 1,00\NC 222,22\NC 3,33\NC\NR \NC Text \NC 2\NC 5,5\NC 66,666\NC\NR \NC Text \NC 100,00\NC 44,44\NC 33,33\NC\NR \stoptabulate \stoptext In the log I get 3 times (i.e. once per g parameter): tabulate > unknown preamble key: ) and of course the numbers are not aligned around the comma. The minimal example runs through, though; my invoice does not, and I didn’t find the real cause yet... Footnote breaks tagging

Hi, ConTeXt mkiv is the only TeX-based typesetting system that can produce tagged PDFs and this is a really useful feature. Unfortunately, footnotes seem to upset tagging.
