Tagging and startitemize[columns]

Hi, Stil ConTeXt is the only TeX-based typesetting system that can produce tagged PDF - this is a unique feature, thank you Hans! I have, however, found that the following MWE produces wrongly nested tagging information. Specifically: - The itemization with columns (\startitemize[columns]) is not contained in an "itemgroup" - The second itemization (without columns) is tagged outside of the "sectioncontent" (Maybe the second issue is a consequence of the first.) I am afraid but this might be a bug. Thank you for any feedback. placelist not working in latest beta

Controlling table split in natural tables

Hello all! I have a natural table that is too large to fit into one page, so it is split. Unfortunately it now splits between rows 28 and 29 that I'd like to keep together. One can obtain language-dependent marking for sub-sentences through the use of |<| this is an aside |>| or through the command \startsubsentence ... \stopsubsentence or the (depreciated?) \subsentence{...}. I have several questions, and the source code appears to hold traces of previous long discussions on this topic. 1. \stopsubsentence at the end of a sentence is rather funny. I suppose in this case one can use an unbalanced |<| (but it would be ideally better if \stopsubsentence could detect the end of the sentence, generally: . ! ?). 2. I have been told that some editors want the emdash surrounded by spaces and others insist that it appear without spaces. So, for English at least, there are several schools, and they can be quite insistent. Can this be setup though a parameter or do we believe that the rules only depend on language? Furthermore, do the commands add or gobble-up extra spaces in the text source? Alan

Possible typo in source file type-imp-lato.mkiv

Hi, I was having trouble getting italics to work for a PDF that uses the Lato font. Bold and 'normal' were rendering just fine. Looking at the file http://source.contextgarden.net/tex/context/base/type-imp-lato.mkiv I can see that all the synonyms point to *lta rather than *lta inside the \definefontsynonym commands. I tried changing all the instances of *lta to *ita in type-imp-lato.mkiv on two different systems (Ubuntu and MacOS) and in both cases I subsequently got italics in my PDF. I suppose this could be a bug. Is this list the right place to report it? My apologies if it is in fact something I was doing wrong! Thanks, Tom

Page number woes

Greetings all! I have a book setup that worked perfectly as long as the inside cover was only one page long. But then we added information to the inside cover and had to split the information on two pages. The so called inside cover works fine, the TOC works fine, but the main text part (starting with Intro) begins now on page 2 when it should be on page 1. And this happens even when the TOC is two pages long, which is a bit weird (I would assume that if it counts TOC into page numbers, two-page TOC would mean that Intro starts on page 3, but nope, it still starts on page 2). The minimal sample attached to this message is really ugly as it doesn't contain any of the environment files, but the problem is visible here just as well as in the real thing - if I make the second page of the inside cover disappear, Intro starts on page 1 as it should. If the so called inside cover is two pages long, Intro starts on page 2. (The file to be compiled is prd-pr43-general_test.tex, the others are component files.) It is quite possible the TOC file is the culprit and it has been pure luck that everything has worked until now... I don't understand the page mechanism in ConTeXt well enough to see where the problem is. I noticed that my ConTeXt version is pretty old: "ConTeXt ver: 2015.02.03 23:55 MKIV beta" (hmm... I didn't update at ConTeXt meeting as I usually do, stupid me.) I'd rather not update just now (production in sensitive phase), but if you think the problem will go away with an update, I'll do it. I can not store it for further processing. PDF Signature Fields

Hello all, is there currently any mechanism in ConTeXt similar to the LaTeX digsig or eforms package? I want to add a form field that can be digitally signed (which is now already possible with Acrobat Reader, not just with Acrobat Pro). Additionally (like the mentioned eforms package) it would be nice, if you could specify other form fields that should be locked once the signature field is actually signed (according to the PDF spec this is simply set via a dictionary). Anyway: can this currently be achieved with ConTeXt? If not: is there any chance to get that feature added sometime? :-) Best regards Andreas

I have had trouble processing text with diacritical marks using the more recent betas and the Brill font. Some of this can be remedied by re-entering the diacritical marks in the source file. (This works very well with Greek.) But there remain some problem passages. Diamond, and Unicode math symbols

I'm looking for a symbol similar to \lozenge, but squarer (like \Diamond in some LaTeX packages, see The Comprehensive Symbol List, p. 112). Any idea how I may typeset it in ConTeXt (MKIV)? \diamond is too small. I am using TeX Gyre Pagella Math if that matters. I also have a couple of questions about \showmathfontcharacters: 1) does that list show all and only the symbols available in the current font, or a predefined list of symbols? 2) The list shows a Unicode point for each symbol, but not the corresponding TeX command (if it exists). Say I need U+02B31 (three leftwards arrows), and I don't want to bother searching TCSL above. May I use the Unicode code point to define a control sequence in ConTeXt that prints the symbol? Table of Contents

I’m using using pandoc and ConTeXt to generate pdf documentation from markdown. I started with the option to use latex (xetex) and swapped to ConTeXt, letting pandoc create the conTeXt file and invoke ConTeXt on it.C Both produce a table of contents active links etc. which is pretty much identical but the xetex version in my various pdf readers can show it in side panel referred to as Table of Contents or outline. This is really nice because it makes it just a click or swipe away. Following advice from Pablo I’ve swapped over to generating XHTML and using the XML mapping ability to generate ConTeXt and the PDF. Using this route the TOC looks the same but it’s no longer there in the outline panel. What do I need in addition to \completecontent to get this feature to work? Aidan

Show the results of XML mapping

When I map from XML to ConTeXt there are lots of rules mapping lots of small bit of XML to small bits of ConTeXt and it is hard get the big picture. If something doesn’t work in the final PDF document it can be hard to know if the mapping failed to match the XML or if the generated ConTeXt was wrong. Is there a way to capture the ConTeXt generated from the mapping rules before it goes on to produce the final document? Thanks Aidan

I have tested this in Acrobat XI too, I don’t know what might be interfering here. Could anyone confirm the issue? BTW, how can I set interaction to all in index entries? (I remember a recent message to the list mentioning this, but I cannot find it [either on my mailbox or in the mailing list archives at ntg.nl].) Greek letter fall back for math

(if it works, it should look better on the page than what I have now.) Apply a start/stop command pair to certain subsections

Hello, I'm a new Context user, and I have a question about conditional formatting of paragraphs. I'm typsetting a CV. I am using pandoc to generate the .tex file from Markdown before compiling the pdf with context. Because pandoc inserts the body of the document from one variable ($body), I would like to avoid using e.g. \startmycommand and then \stopmycommand to modify individual subsections. What I can do from Markdown is tag the headings, so that (for example) the "Publications" subsection starts as "\subsection[pubs]{Publications}". I would like to know if there is a way to automatically apply a start/stop command pair to the "pubs" subsection(s), or if it better to do this with an external script that modifies the .tex file before I call context. Below is an example where I can get the output I'm looking for (paragraphs in the "pubs" subsection have a hanging indent) by defining a start/stop command pair and manually applying it to the "pubs" subsection. If anyone has any tips to apply this automatically to the "pubs" subsection(s) but not the "text" subsections, I'd appreciate it! I have searched the wiki, read through the "Context: an excursion" document and looked around in the mail archive and stackexchange, but I didn't find exactly what I want. ConTeXt installation and configuration on Win 10 x64

i downloaded ConTeXt from contextgarden and so far i saw three options to download first i found folders setup and setup2? which one should i use? in one of them there are win32 and win64 zips. and in the other are win32, win64 plus a mswin zip. which one is the correct one? since i am on Win10x64 i downloaded context-setup-win64.zip. i unzipped the file, started command as admin and went to Con dir. there i entered: first-setup.bat --modules=all everything went fine and i added the win64 folder which Con installer showed me at the end to my system paths. as far as i know, an update is done the same way. please correct me if i am wrong. in TeXnicCenter i added a new profile. on (La)TeX register i have activated: Run LaTeX in this profile. in the path to compiler field i entered: F:\Sandbox\ConTeXt\tex\setuptex.bat & F:\Sandbox\ConTeXt\tex\texmf-win64\bin\texmfstart.exe question: do i need both entries? in the command line field i entered: texexec.rb --batch --nonstop --pdf --color "%bm" --synctex=-1 BibTeX is deactivated, MakeIndex isn't used either. well and it works. but not without ruby: why do i need ruby? i would use mkiv only if i could. i also worked with Hex color codes but then everything is black untill i add \setupcolor[hex] to the document. i read that this line is only needed in mkiv, so again i am wondering why i am obviously using mkii instead of mkiv... the last question for now is: how can i stop pdfTeX.exe from warning me that no GlyphToUnicode entry has been inserted yet. i read somewhere that this can be ignored but nobody explains what this is and how it works. i just don't want to read this every time but fix it. and what is meant with bad boxes? i read "Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph..." but don't know how to fix this. i would also have questions related to SciTE, because i can't make UTF-8 work following the desctiption on contextgarden, but for now i would be happy if i could take the most out of context within TeXnicCenter. weird behavior of brackets in block quotations

We use “[...]” in quotations to indicate departures from the written text. Bug in startitemize

Hi Hans, It seems that with the new beta (ConTeXt ver: 2016.03.04 10:39 MKIV beta fmt: 2016.3.7), there is a bug with random itemization. I cannot tell exactly when this feature has been broken. non-splitting footnotes

Hi folks, http://context.fedarch.org/Context/trapChapter16_petra.pdf page 7-8 there's a very large space due to a footnote. I've tried to induce footnote splitting (I just updated to mtx-context | current version: 2016.03.04 10:39) but it doesn't seem to work. All the discussion on this list is... 8 years old. Hi all, short example in extra big size to make the effect visible: \setupbodyfont [termes,48pt] \mainlanguage [de] \starttext „Vater“ \quotation{Vater} \stoptext In the first line, the character „ has a bit of kerning with the following V (could be even more, to my taste). With \quotation, the gap between them is very large. Could the kerning be applied in this case too? Or is it better to use the raw „? A document composed only of TEXpages

Hello everybody, I would like to have a document composed of TEXpages only, where each TEXpage contains one whole subsection or section. I have achieved that indeed, but I don't get to understand how the numbering of pages works in this case. I've tried to use \setcounter[userpage][\pagenumber+1]. But the generated list of contents in page 1 says that section "My Third Subsection" is in page 3 instead of 4, though the link correctly jumps to page 4. The (sub)section in the last TEXpage of the document gets always numbered as if it would be in the next to last TEXpage. To make the list of contents look good, I may add one last empty TEXpage at the end of the document. But I'd still like to ask how, or if, it would be possible to make this use case work without that trick. There's a pair more things: When the document is composed of only one single TEXpage, then that page gets number 0 in the PDF browser, instead of number 1. When I don't use \setcounter[userpage][\pagenumber+1] in between the TEXpages, they get numbers 1,1,1,2 in the PDF browser, while the list of contents says my subsections are in pages 1,1,0 (but the links jump always to the correct page). Hi! How to expand \translate so that it doesn't show up in the PDF metadata? Hi Wolfgang, Pablo. I'm having a great deal of difficulties deploying custom user fonts using the luatex loading sequence with either the new or old simplefonts setups. Is there a wiki page which is most correct on how to go from "no user font loaded" to "define font family, \input knuth" with instructions? I've got the feeling I've been looking in the wrong places. For the most desirable user font, can we presume 14.04 and the system package fonts-roboto? (ttf) or I'm happy to attach the .otf compiled versions I made if you think that worthwhile. We certainly can use whatever directories we want -- but I'm just unsure about how to most consistently achieve this. Cheers, -Brian

Custom syntax highlighting

According to the wiki, there is no SQL syntax coloring available for MKIV yet, but I'd be happy to be wrong :) If I am not wrong, I'd like to write my own syntax file, but not starting from scratch. problem with page number on last page

To prevent empty pages in a double-sided page environment, I have been using \setuppagenumbering[page=]. This does not work as it should, however, when there is no body text but only a continuing footnote on the last page. Then, though there are still no empty pages, the pagenumber on the last page is the same as that on the preceding page. Consider \setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided] \setuppagenumbering[page=] \starttext \dorecurse{3}{\input knuth}\footnote{\dorecurse{3}{\input knuth}} %\input knuth \stoptext with and without the line currently commented out. Customize grid layout

Dear TeXers, Is it possible to define the layout like: \setuplayout [grid=yes% ,lines=6% ,gridstyle={1,1,1,3.5,1,1}% ] so that I can have 6 lines per page, but the 4th line skips will be 3.5\baselineskip. For your information, the blank between the first 3 lines and the rest ones is used to display the page number (it's not a joke although April is close). I was thinking putting an invisible rule after each CJK glyph as a font feature, and the height of the rule changes every 6 lines starting from 4. But \linenumber seems to be an MKII-only counter. Math fractions

Something is wrong in the current implmentation of \tfrac. If we take away all the bells and whistles provided by \definemathfraction, * \tfrac#1#2 should be equal to {\textstyle #2 \over #1} * \dfrac#1#2 should be equal to {\displaystyle #2 \over #1} * \frac should be equal to \tfrac in inline math and \dfrac in display math. In the current implmentation \frac works correctly, but \tfrac does not. For example: \startbuffer \frac 12 \tfrac 12 \dfrac 12 \stopbuffer \starttext $\getbuffer$ \startformula \getbuffer \stopformula \stoptext The output of \frac and \dfrac is correct in both inline and display mode. The output of \tfrac is wrong in both modes. In both modes, \tfrac should equal the current output of \frac in inline mode. Although I don't completely understand the code, my guess is that there is a bug in how mathstyle=text is implemented (really, mathstyle=text should be equivalent to mathstyle=empty in inline math mode). Hi folks, I have a file that I use to combine PDF files in one bigger file. The pages are A4 or A3, rotated or not. This results in a mixed A4/A3 document that I can print and distribute. Example page: \page\setuppapersize[A4,portrait][A4,portrait] \setuplayout[backspace=10mm,topspace=10mm,width=277mm,height=190mm,header=5mm,footer=1mm] \rotate[rotation=90]{\externalfigure[Exercise-1a-B2B-web-site-Anna-A.pdf][width=\hsize]} I'd like to have the name of the external file in the header. Can I do that? G PS. I'm still using mkii for my production (only used mkiv for a transformation to EPUB 1.5 ears ago).

I'm trying to learn `context`, and I'm satisfied with their capacities. I read in contextgarden <http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupbackgrounds> that options of `\setupbackgrounds` inherit from `\setupframed`, but if I setup `toffset=5mm` for `\setupbackgrounds[text][text][frame=on,toffset=5mm]` I have no effect? With `frameoffset` you can modify the four directions but how about a single direction? And I think it is time to discuss an issue with textual links. I know you don’t like it. I’m sorry, but I think it is an essential feature for hyperlinks. [I’d request other users to contribute their experiences with this issue, please.] We need that all links in a text file behave the same way to reach their destination. Page 2 from sample above describes what is wrong (and crazy to send a PDF document generated this way [at least, not relaxing to the reader]). And if \setupinteraction[focus=standard] is used, all link destinations should be named ones (/XYZ). Of course, I’m not talking about widgets for presentations. But footnotes, references, linenotes and other similar links that may appear in a text should behave the same way in the same document. Sorry, but some users complained to me about this behavior. I know that some PDF readers don’t follow this (only mupdf that I’m aware of [and I opened an issue: http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=696442] SumatraPDF, Adobe, evince and xpdf implement named destinations. It is an extremely useful feature and it isn’t reasonable to expect from users that they have huge screens to read PDF documents generated with ConTeXt. And in many scenarios, having a screen version (different from the print version) is not an option. And as explained in the sample code above, I have only a 15-inch screen. Hi, I have found the following problem when including an external PDF with \externalfigure: Some (or all?) values in PDF arrays that are between -1.0 and 0.0 loose their minus sign. E.g: -0.1 turns into 0.1. This can lead to significant visual differences. This problem did not exist in earlier versions of ConTeXt. For a MWE consider the following: \starttext \externalfigure[test.pdf] \stoptext where test.pdf is attached and has a MediaBox [-0.1 -0.1 612 792]. In the PDF produced by ConTeXt test.pdf is correctly put in an XObject but this XObject now has a BBox [0.1 0.1 612 792]. I am afraid but this might be a bug in newer versions of luatex. size in setuptype

Why does \setuptyping has a parameter bodyfont= and is \setuptype missing it? I am asking because in typesetting with \setuptype[style=small]\type{something} I get another font and size than with \setuptyping[bodyfont=small]\starttyping ... \stoptyping whereas in both the same is wanted in order to keep continuity in size and style. \setuptype[bodyfont=small] definitely gave something different, i.e. no change. \setuptype[bodyfont=small]: can this be incorporated in the next ConTeXt-beta producing the same effect as \setuptyping[bodyfont=small]? Controlling \at output

I’m trying to create something (like varioref in latex) that suppresses \at output if the referenced item is on the current page. The main decision point is with \doifelse{\at[ref2]}{\rawcountervalue[page]}{ same page }{ different page } no matter what I try (expdoifelse and other ways to get the current page) the values never match. \doifelse{\at[ref2]}{\at[ref1]}….. (ref1 and ref2 are on the same page but don’t match \doifelse{\rawcountervalue[page]}{1}… it is page 1 but always fails. The only match I get is with \doifelse{\at[ref2]}{\at[ref2]}…. which is pretty useless Presumably I’m doing something stupid. Or do i have to go for a much lower level approach

I find it a bit surprising that ConTeXt gives 'missing } inserted' with: \starttext\startformula \mathop=^{\rm def} \stopformula\stoptext (\mathop{=}^... is fine, though). The above formula is correct in Plain (Lua)TeX (in fact, it is copied from The TeX Book). Why does ConTeXt need braces? (Before you point it out: I know that I should use \stackrel…) Nicola

Hello, I was dismayed to read the February newsletter published by a large University: the attached extract shows a nice example of the quality of the typesetting... It is in French, but that doesn't matter, anyone can see the result independent of the language. I share it with the ConTeXt list as we see more and more examples like this, and the sad thing is that most readers think that they could care less. Are readers (and writers) really becoming so sloppy? Have we become so perverted by poor rendering by HTML engines that we now will accept anything? I do not know about others, but I find it extremely difficult to read newspapers (or much anything else) online. Alan

Setting expansion depth limit for metapost

I'm preparing quite long presentation -- nearly 3000 sides, 900 figures (500 distinct PNG files). I'm using ConTeXt MkIV installed using minimals (2010.03.12 19:49). Recently I'm hitting MetaPost capacity limit on expansion depth: !mplib : mp terminal: ! MetaPost capacity exceeded, sorry [expansion depth=10000]. Increasing expand_depth in texmf.cnf and regenerating formats with context --make doesn't help. expansion depth is still at 10000 in error message. texmf.cnf in texmf-local I've changed is reported by context as first one in log line starting with "mkiv lua stats : used config path" What am I missing? Dear list, I have the following table: \starttext \startalign[center] \startxtable[location=middle, frame=off, bottomframe=on, topframe=on, rulethickness=2em, %~ before={\startalign[center]}, after={\stopalign} ] \startxrow \startxcell test \stopxcell \stopxrow \stopxtable \stopalign \stoptext Well, I thought location would center the table. Before and after (with \startalign) crash compilation. Aligning the whole table doesn’t seem to make any difference. Sorry, but how can I center the table and not its contents? The second issue is about rulethickness: would it be possible to specify different dimensions for each frame (top, bottom, left, right)? Many thanks for your help, Pablo -- http://www.ousia.tk
