Dear ConTeXt maintainers, would it be possible that ConTeXt Standalone for the linux platform had the latest LuaTeX binaries? Besides the update, I think it is important to confirm whether English hyphenation is fixed in the latest binary. drawpathoptions and drawoptions

Hi, I have two questions: 1) In the metafun manual I found (p 57 in the version I browse) a setting drawpathoptions. I tried with \startMPpage drawpathoptions(withcolor darkred); path p; p:= (0,0)--(1cm,1cm)--(1cm,0)--(0,1cm); draw p; \stopMPpage but the result turned out to be black. Isn't drawpathoptions available anymore, or do I misuse it? 2) If I run the code below \startMPpage drawoptions(withcolor darkred); path p; p:= (0,0)--(1cm,1cm)--(1cm,0)--(0,1cm); draw image ( draw p; draw p xshifted 2cm withcolor darkyellow; ); \stopMPpage everything gets dark red. Can I somehow change the color inside an image after setting a default color with drawoptions? If I do \startMPpage drawoptions(withcolor darkred); path p; p:= (0,0)--(1cm,1cm)--(1cm,0)--(0,1cm); draw p; draw p xshifted 2cm withcolor darkyellow; \stopMPpage I get the expected result (i.e. one darkred and one darkyellow path), but I want to use an image. /Mikael

marking in two pass data

Hi all, the example is kind of silly but shows my problem: I use Lua to manipulate data from xml files, and I want to typeset it as natural tables. Is it possible to set a marking within such tables so that it works in page headers? I hit a similar problem some time ago, but I'm not sure I found any good solution for it... Access to Intermediate Document after Pre-processing

Hi all, I am working with a reasonably complex document structure, where I make heavy use of the following constructs \input (to import a number of source files) \if and \newif (to switch between different paragraphs depending on some conditions) \setvariable and \getvariable (to reuse some text in different places) So, does ConTeXt run some sort of pre-processing step that processes all of the above and which results in an intermediate document that is then type-set? And is it possible to only run this pre-processing step and get access to that intermediate document? I am asking as I have some Ruby scripts that take ConTeXt documents and convert it to another format. However, those scripts do not deal with any of the above and rather than implementing the necessary logic to deal with importing of files, conditions and variables, I thought ConTeXt does that already if only I could get access to the resulting intermediate file. Header background off with \page?

Hello, the following code: ---- \setupheadertexts[Le][Ri] \setupbackgrounds[header][text][bottomframe=on] \starttext \startTEXpage \externalfigure[dummy] \stopTEXpage \page[yes,header,footer,odd] % Empty page to come here Blabla \stoptext ---- should generate an empty page. The \page[yes,header,footer,odd] suppress header and footer, which is good, and inserts one page; the problem is that header and footer background is kept and still appears. Is it a "wanted" feature? My guess is that when one uses "\page[...,header,footer...]" than suppressing header/footer background is intended, too. If the background is not suppressed automatically with "header,footer", would it be possible to implement something like "\page[...,background,...] which would suppress header and footer background (or suppress their backgrounds automatically with \page[...header...footer...])? Error in loading font Samim

Hello, I believe this worked fine in June's beta but now gives an error. \starttext \definedfont[Samim] سلام \stoptext I got the font originally from here <https://github.com/rastikerdar/samim-font/releases/download/v0.11.0/samim-f…>, but then removed the MATH table because it was causing an error at the time to get the attached version. Dear list, \pdfactualtext behaves oddly when the argument is \char. \starttext \pdfactualtext{\char`A}{B} \stoptext In the example, the actual text in the PDF is »A« even though it should be »B«. If I just use \pdfactualtext{A}{B} it works fine. Cheers, Henri

How to switch single font?

Dear list, how can I switch to another typeface for the, say, roman font only? When I use \definefontfamily to do so it switches *all* the fonts, including math, to the one loaded (example below). OTF feature for a math font

Dear Hans & Wolfgang, I resolved some of the minor issues. But the main question still stands. Is it possible to add an OTF feature to the math font? In the very simple case, I want to change any sequence like "1.2" to "1/2". My feature (see below) works for text fonts but not in math mode. \typescriptthree within the optional argument of \definefontsynonym

Hello Hans, Suppose you have a typescript as follows. \starttypescript [first] [MyFont] [GoodieOne,GoodieTwo] \definefontsynonym [Serif] [\typescripttwo] [goodies=\typescriptthree] \stoptypescript Using macros \typescriptX (for X=one, two, and three) works in the first and second arguments in \definefontsynonym but not in the optional argument. This seems to be because the optional argument is not expanded. Is this a bug or a feature? What I want to do was have a set of "fixes" (correcting kern issues, etc.) for a collection of fonts. I can either put these in separate goodie files or feature sets (the latter being what I was trying but not in the sample above), and write generic typescripts that would load any of the fonts with its associated fixes. While I can use sans/serif/mono in the first argument, and name of the font in the second argument (to be mapped appropriately using \typescriptprefix to nmemonic name and real font name), the third (optional) argument of \definefontsynonym does not expand immediately, hence I'll end up with "undefined" \typescriptthree when it will be used. How to typeset a line as if it had zero height

Dear all, I have this simple MWE : \starttext \startsection[title=Section] \startalignment[flushright]Line.\stopalignment %% how to make this « 0 height » ? \input knuth \stopsection \stoptext How can I, with ConTeXt or plain TeX, modify this simple example to typeset the text above as if the right aligned line (‘Line’ just below the section) had 0 height (ie the main paragraph with knuth quot is just after the section without blank line) ? Custom exporters

Dear list, inspired by the question »Convert ConTeXt to LaTeX« on TeX.SX [1] I wondered whether the export backend of ConTeXt allows to write custom exporters. I imagine that the XML backend simply translates ConTeXt markup to XML markup. Such a translation appears to me to also be feasible for other markup languages such as LaTeX or even Markdown. No difference in this respect: they produce the same hyphenation errors in an English text. To complicate (perhaps) matters a bit: I did some tests with German, French and Italian texts. Compilation with different mkiv - versions produced no differences and no hyphenation errors. So far I found hyhpenation errors only in English texts compiled with recent mkiv's on a Mac. \mainlanguage[pe]

Hello, This was lost in the other thread, so I'm starting a fresh one dedicated to the question. 1) \showinstalledlanguages does not show pe/persian/fa or anything like that but it has several arabic variants. was this dropped in MkIV or was there never a persian language environment even in MkII? I thought there were translated labels for Farsi somewhere. 2) In the following MWE, ad-hoc hyphenation using \- works and leads to hyphenation. However, specifying the pattern at the beginning does not have any effect. Math columns in Natural Tables

Dear list, with the old tabulate macros there was the possibility to format columns as math (m for inline, M for display). Is there any possibility to typeset cells in math mode in Natural Tables? This way, the hyphen would be rendered as minus and spacing around relation and binary operators would be consistent (example below). Hyphenation errors (again or still) in recent mkiv

Dear all, In the setupfile of my project I have \mainlanguage[en]. The font used is Verdana. With mkiv versions till october 2015 the hyphenation of English words was always correct. The same files compiled with mkiv of july 2016 (version 2016.07.18 16;26) give hyphenations that are definitely wrong. Some examples: begi-nning, pr-ocedure, adequ-ately, st-yle I made some tests with Linux Libertine sans and here also the earlier mkiv's gave correct hyphenations, the july version wrong ones. So it seems that ref. hyphenation something is wrong with this mkiv-version. Or do I now have to use something other than \mainlanguage[en] ? BTW, I found a similar discussion on this list at the beginning of february. Apparently the problem either was not solved or has returned. Thanks in advance for advice. Randomize control points in metapost/metafun?

Hi! I look for a way to randomize control points of a path, leaving the coordinates themselves untouched. The reason is the following: I want to draw (for example) a circle with a triangle inside, and I want them to look slightly randomized. If I do (see attached pdf for a typical result of this) \startMPpage draw fullcircle scaled 2cm randomized 0.1cm; draw ((1cm,0)--(0,1cm)--(-1cm,0)--cycle) randomized 0.1cm; \stopMPpage then the corners of the triangle does not stay on the circle (and I want them to). [I dont want the triangle to consist of perfectly straight lines, so I cannot (directly) draw the triangle using different points along the randomized circle] I imagine that one could achieve what I want if one could randomize the control points only. Also, is it possible to randomize a picture (consisting of several paths/points) somehow, without randomizing each part of it manually? /Mikael

When I copy what you write you get and paste it into my example I still get, with Verdana 10 pt, no hyphenation errors with mkiv version 2015.10.09 21:28 and some with mkiv version 2016.07.18 16:46: marv-elous and di-scriminate. So doesn't it show that at least the two mkiv-versions differ in this respect and that when using the new version something extra or different has to be done in the setups to get the correct hyphenations? Fortunately I still have kept some of the older ConTeXt-versions, so my project will not suffer from hyphenation error. But I suspect that reliance on older versions should not have to be necessary. Hi all (especially the gardeners), have you seen this post? https://lars.ingebrigtsen.no/2016/07/28/the-end-of-gmane/ Long story short: the sole maintainer of gmane is getting fed up with ddos attacks and is thinking about terminating the service. If I’m not mistaken, for the time being, gmane is the only searchable archive of the context mailing list, so this would be a major setback. On the garden, there has been a note for five or six years (I think) that work is being done on archive.contextgarden.net. Maybe the approaching end of gmane would be a good motivation to really do this work? Thomas

lua tables - how do you cope?

This is less a specific question about ConTeXt than a hope for good advice: I’m maltreating my xml files with a mixture of TeX and Lua. I want to extract and typeset information in different forms, so I first collect everything in lua tables, rearrange and order these tables and typeset the results. All fine and dandy. My problem is that I have to have tables within tables within tables… you get the picture. One aspect of Lua that is really bugging me is the fact that associative tables have no order, which can be a pain in the butt for this kind of operation. So I have to be careful that I have to use constructs that will keep the order in which items have been added and loop through them via ipairs() instead of pairs(). I find it difficult to keep track of what’s inside my layers upon layers of tables. So my question is: how do those of you who are more experienced with this kind of question proceed? Do you have any handy tool to visualize a table? Any tips you want to share? Thanks a lot! Thomas

inconsistent math fontsize

To ensure consistency with spacing I want to change to using a \startformulas .. \stopformulas construction. See MWE below However, the solution using the \startformulas .. \stopformulas construction gives a noticeably smaller fontsize ! I’m using the latest beta: ConTeXt ver: 2016.07.25; Luatex 0.95 Worth noting that all both fontsizes are identical when using context live via contextgarden. Hello list, I would like to have notes after a section. Now I would like to know: in the command\setupfootnote there is a key called :after, but the key had a red color, i dont know if i could need it, and i dont know what command i should give in the key after: maybe after=section? Command line tool for macro definitions

Dear list, For TeX/LaTeX users there is the neat command line tool `texdef` with which you can show the definition of a macro. Here an example: $ texdef -t latex section \section: \long macro:->\@startsection {section}{1}{\z@ }{-3.5ex \@plus -1ex \@minus -.2ex}{2.3ex \@plus .2ex}{\normalfont \Large \bfseries } Is there something similar for ConTeXt? emergency stretch not taken in account in some cases

Dear all, In some cases specifying \setupalign[stretch] does not seem to have any effect with latest betas (live, 2016.06.20 22:14 version are fine, but 2016.07.18 is not), and the output has now overfulls instead of (admitedly a bit large) underfulls. Attached simple (albeit bit extreme) MWE. Sorry for the relatively large MWE but could not figure out how to make it shorter. emergency_stretch.pdf produced with latest beta (updated with first-setup.bat today). emergency_stretch_ok.pdf produced with 2016.06.20 22:14 version. Hello, is there a way to tell ConTeXt "go to odd page, insert empty page to reach the next odd page" eventually? (IOW: When currently on odd page, break page and insert one empty (blank) (= even) page; continue on the next (= odd) page. first-setup.bat weirdness II: xetex etc.

Dear syndicate, As mentioned in my other message, "first-setup.bat weirdness I: cloned system" I've now switched to the first-setup.bat way of updating. Two pieces of weirdness on the main machine: 1. mtx-context | running command: xetex --ini --etex --8bit cont-en.mkii \dump makes vista complain: ===================== xetex.exe - Unable to Locate Component This application has failed to start because xetex.dll was not found. <etc.> ===================== Pressing OK, xetex crashes and things continue until 2. mtx-context | running command: xetex --ini --etex --8bit cont-nl.mkii \dump Then the same error occurs. After xetex crashes things continue briefly till first-setup.bat exits. Everything works fine, except that every now and then the following happens when I run a file: ===================== This is LuaTeX, Version 0.97.0 (TeX Live 2016/W32TeX) system commands enabled. . <*> cont-yes.mkiv ? ===================== A fresh run of first-setup.bat makes the problem go away but it is annoying. After getting even more weirdness when cloning to another machine -- see "first-setup.bat weirdness I: cloned system" -- it seems appropriate to put this one out to the forum as well. Any explanations and advice would be appreciated. Never had these problems using when updating manually... Dear gang, In the past I updated to the latest via installing cont-tmf.zip (and luatex.exe if needed) manually, but recently I switched to first-setup.bat. I got things working on one 64-bit machine (vista), and want to set up context on another (windows7), also 64-bit. Normally all I need to to do is zip/rar the tree, move it to the second machine, and voila, I'm up and running. This time, however, it doesn't work; when I run a file I get ===================== This is LuaTeX, Version 0.97.0 (TeX Live 2016/W32TeX) system commands enabled. . <*> cont-yes.mkiv ? ===================== as well as a complaint from windows7: ===================== Assertion failed! How to extend btx rendering?

Dear list, It is common in physics (and probably mathematics) that papers are uploaded to an electronic archive prior to publishing them in the peer-review literature. In physical sciences this is https://arxiv.org. To cite such articles one usually uses the following format, here on the example of the most recent contribution to the Condensed Matter section: N.A. Kudryashov, A.A. Kutukov, and E.A. Mazur, Normal State of the Metallic Hydrogen Sulfide, arXiv:1607.04624 (2016). To reproduce this kind of format I tried to extend the APS rendering (see the long example below, sorry). Unfortunately, this does not work, because apparently the `eprint` and `archivePrefix` fields are not read in. The combination `eprint` and `archivePrefix` is used, because this is what the LaTeX package `biblatex` expects. How do I extend the btx rendering by these additional fields? In the first table, the lohi of align works, but the middle does not have any effect. Putting the content in a frame gives the desired result as in the second table. This is not a problem, I just wondered if it is supposed to work in the first table. I have a problem with an old TOC. I tried to put in an Author, but the problem is, that there is so much distance between the forename and the surname, and than comes the title. Access stylistic sets in lucidaot

Dear list, I have been using the Lucida fonts for long time with LaTeX, either the Type 1 version through the `lucimatx` package or the OpenType variants with `unicode-math`. In `unicode-math` there is a straightforward way to select stylistic sets, e.g. alternative calligraphic glyphs. Different colors in LaTeX and ConTeXt

Dear list, I wanted to draw some nice pictures using TikZ and pgfplots, but then I noticed that the colors of the ticks in my pgfplots graph were unusually bright and it looked very weird. I'm using ConTeXt MkIV distributed with TL 2016. How can I adjust the colors in ConTeXt to match the ones produced by plain TeX? In principle this is workable up to the point that the output PDF needs to be handed off to the user. In my case, it is the (authenticated) parent who is requesting their child’s report card in one of two forms each of which is created dynamically at any point along the school “term”. The user is waiting for the output PDF from the browser. In Laravel this is accomplished by using: return response()->download($full_output_filename)->deleteFileAfterSend(true); whereupon the end user sees the familiar Open, Save, … dialogue. But the dispatcher pattern is very useful, and I like it very much. In another area, I use it to monitor a directory for forms input, which are done off-line on W10 tablets using a browser and the Mongoose lightweight httpd, and then uploaded using sftp (under Cygwin). Hi all, It is high time I sent out some news about the next ConTeXt meeting. First off, the deadline for early bird payment happened in the middle of my vacation. An unfortunate side-effect: I completely forgot to send out a reminder to the list! Bad me! To make it up to you, we will allow an extra few days of early bird registration. All registrations done during the current week will still be considered ‘early’, as long as the bank transfer happens at the same time. The new cut-off date is therefore Sunday July 17 (I have no desire to update the web pages with the new deadline, so just ignore the July 1st date given there). After that embarrassing disclosure, here is the other information I wanted to share: * As noted before, the meeting will be held in Kalenberg, The Netherlands, from Sunday September 25 until Saturday October 1, 2016. Invoking ConTeXt from inside php web appliction

I am stuggling with getting ConTeXt to run from inside a php script under Apache. First off, let me say that the installation works fine from the command line as a logged in user. Initially, I tried to do it inline: cmd = ". /opt/context/tex/setuptex /opt/context/tex/setuptex; cd $spool_dir; context $full_input_filename"; system($cmd); which returns exit status 2, "Incorrect usage". Then I created a small bash script with the following lines: #!/usr/bin/env bash . /opt/context/tex/setuptex /opt/context/tex context $1 When I trap the output, I get the following error in the log file: resolvers | caches | fatal error: there is no valid writable cache path defined I also attempted this manually at a bash prompt resulting in the same error: sudo -u www-data bash -c bin/proccontext.sh $FILENAME What would be the correct design pattern to invoke ConTeXt from a web application? Dear list, In some lua code I have in my project, I’ve started getting this error when upgrading to latest beta (used to work fine for lots of versions for months) : attempt to perform arithmetic on field 'hangindent' (a nil value) when using expression: tex.hangindent in lua code. Dear list, I just wanted to check whether chemical structures typeset in ConTeXt can be exported as XML. Therefore I wanted to setup a simple example with ppchTeX. Bug in placeformula with framed text

Hi Hans, It seems that there is a bug in the latest beta (ConTeXt vesion: 2016.07.01 16:28) when using \placeformula with a framed text environment. The numbers for the formulas are placed incorrectly, on the left as well as on the right. Also, as one may see in the example below the numbering of the formulas begins at 2 instead of 1 at the first instance, and at it continues at 6 instead of 4 in the second instance. Below is an example (sorry if it is not absolutely minimal: I ran into this bug when updating a lecture notes which uses a left frame around \proclaim stuff). I attach the PDF showing the problem. I wonder whether this is related to the new features introduced recently for math frames. The code gives correct result with ConTeXt version 2015.05.18 12:26 from TeXLive 2015). Hello Hans & Wolfgang, I just updated to the recent beta: 2016.07.01 16:28 Is that the latest version or is there something wrong with the update mechanism? In any case, most my Farsi tests are broken now and the culprit seems to be \linedir. TikZ node and color

Dear List, I use the latest version of ConTeXt and I have the following MWE: \usemodule[tikz] \starttext \starttikzpicture \node {\color[red]{red}}; \node[xshift=30] {\color[red]{not red}}; \stoptikzpicture \stoptext Can anybody tell me why the second node is not colored red? Aside: In LaTeX when using \color{red}{...} this tikzpicture renders correctly. For LaTeX I use TikZ version 3.0.1a, in ConTeXt it seems to be version 3.0.1. Any feedback is welcome.
