Hi all, There's a problem when I want to define the note so that it's displayed according to the size and font of the text: this MWE change the notation size: \definenote[Mynote][location=text,before={},] \setupnote[Mynote] [location=left, textcommand=\tfb \raise 0.2ex\hbox, ] \starttext hello \Mynote{refrence} \placenotes[Mynote] \stoptext but i cannot set it for \tfxx. also it's relative to my main body font, and my current font and color doesn't apply to text. for example if my current text has color red with another font the note doesn't change according to it, and will display identical everywhere. And when I try to define it like this MWE: \definenote[Mynote][location=text,before={},] \setupnote[Mynote] [location=left, textcommand= \scale [height=0.7ex] \raise 0.2ex\hbox, ] \starttext hello \Mynote{refrence} \placenotes[Mynote] \stoptext it doesn't work. how i should define such notes?

ConTeXt source from XML

My question is: Is it possible to have ConTeXt output a (preliminary) ConTeXt file instead of typesetting a PDF file, for further editing? Christoph

missing space with French quotation

Hi, When using \start/stopquotation in French documents, there is a missing space: \mainlanguage[fr] \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] \starttext bla \quotation{OK} bla\\ bla «OK» bla \startquotation Not Ok: a space is missing \stopquotation \stoptext Is this a bug or a feature? background= key not working in \startbackground and \starttextbackground

Hi, I am testing some of my old styles on latest context and find that the background key of \startbackground and \starttextbackground doesn't work (\framed is working as expected). Kerning in Noto Serif

Hi all, I can't get Kerning working with Noto Serif. My minimal file is: \definefontfeature[oldstylenumber][onum=yes] \definefont[testnoto][file:NotoSerif-Regular*default at 12pt] \starttext Line 1: {VAVAVAVAVAVA 12345}\par Line 2: {\setff{oldstylenumber}VAVAVAVAVAVA 12345}\par Line 3: {\addff{oldstylenumber}VAVAVAVAVAVA 12345}\par \testnoto Line 4: {VAVAVAVAVAVA 12345}\par Line 5: {\setff{oldstylenumber}VAVAVAVAVAVA 12345}\par Line 6: {\addff{oldstylenumber}VAVAVAVAVAVA 12345}\par \stoptext Line 4 and 6 should be significantly shorter too. I tried the variable and the static versions. In fontforge I can see a kerning of -80 between A and V. My context is the newest lmtx. Greetings Lutz

I assume that its calculations were a bit conservative for whatever reason, but I really wanted the last item to be on the same page as its friends. I tried some "tricks" that would have worked for me in plain TeX, but ConTeXt was having none of that. Q1: Is there a Right Way to force ConTeXt to put an \item on the current page? Q2: If not, does anyone wish to suggest some way to trick ConTeXt here, or to do an end-run around its calculations? Note: to solve this problem the use of brute force has been authorized. Thanks. setuphead in connection with the command argument

Hi, I'm trying to adapt the format of chapters in my document and have a few questions regarding setuphead. My aim is to have the chapter (title) on a separate page with an additional intro in different text sizes for title, subtitle and the intro. I chose to use the "command=" argument in setuphead for that. However, I'm not quite sure about it's internals. Let's begin with a minimal example: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } \setuphead[title, chapter][command=\MyChapter] \setupbodyfont[11pt] \starttext \startchapter[title=foo][subtitle=bar, intro={some explanation}] some text \stopchapter \stoptext ``` This produces 1.pdf. ## Font size What is the reason that that the font of the chapter is bigger? How can I reset it to normal size? This does not work at all: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \setupbodyfont[11pt] #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` However, changing to a bigger font works somehow. Is there a factor applied to the font size internally? For example: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% \setupbodyfont[20pt] #1 #2: \structureuservariable{subtitle} (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` produces 2.pdf (the chapter font is not 20pt). ## Line breaks How can I achieve line breaks? This does not work: ``` \define[2]\MyChapter{% #1 #2:\\ \structureuservariable{subtitle}\\ (\structureuservariable{intro}) } ``` (see 3.pdf) I also want to set everything except of the intro in a flushright environment but do not know how. Hi, When I run Example 1 given there, I get three bullet symbols, but no "column N ..." text. Note that the \starttext is *after* the \startitemize ... \stopitemize Q1: Is my ConTeXt installation broken, or is the wiki page showing output that does not correspond to the input? Q2: If the wiki page is inconsistent, is there an easy fix? Q3: If my installation is correct, why do I get bullet symbols *before* \starttext ? Thanks. Jim

Number in a circle

Hello list, I would like to typeset a number in a circle. Nothing fancy. No special colours, transforms, or complex metapost magic (which I am not familiar with). I have tried \circled{3} and \textcircled{3}, but ConTeXt does not appear to recognize these commands. Vanishing floats with location=split and \start ... \stopsplittext within

Greetings, I have run into an issue whilst using \start ... \stopsplittext. I intended to use it for large code listings (using the t-vim module), however floats with location=split using that environment seem to vanish if there is nearly not enough text before the float to fill a page. Not only that, a second float like that seems to lead to fatal errors related to an unclosed group, however the document compiles regardless. The following MWE is an example of this. I am using ConTeXt version 2024.05.27 18:16. \definefloat[codelisting][codelistings] \setupcaption[codelisting][location=top] \setuplabeltext[english][codelisting=Listing ] %\showboxes \starttext \input knuth \input knuth \input knuth \input knuth % Filler. Filler. Filler. Filler. % uncomment to push out a full page. the float will appear \startplacecodelisting[ title=My great C program on display!, location=split, ] \startsplittext \tt \input zapf \stopsplittext \stopplacecodelisting \input ward \startplacecodelisting[ title=My second great C program on display!, location=split, ] \startsplittext \tt \input ward \stopsplittext \stoptext On a related note, one can also observe that with specific amounts of text a float may end up being split in two on a single page, however I could not replicate it. Additionally, code listings done with t-vim's commands seem to lose line numbering within \start ... \stopsplittext in splittable floats, but I figure that's more on the module authors. In any case, is there more I can do other than not use floats for code listings?

issue with signing

Dear list, I have the following sample \setupinteraction[state=start] \definefield[signature][signed] \defineoverlay[signature][my signature] \starttext \startTEXpage[offset=1ts,frame=on,framecolor=darkblue] sign: \inframed[background=signature,framecolor=darkred] {\fieldbody[signature][width=3cm,option=hidden]} \stopTEXpage \stoptext After compiling, I sign it with the following command (in latest from 2024.05.31 18:50): mtxrun --script pdf --sign --certificate=mycert.pfx --password=ABCabc a It requires the pass phrase (again?) and I get a signed PDF document. But Acrobat cannot find (or display) any signature in that PDF document. pdfsig (from poppler-utils-24.02.0) complains about digest mismatch: $ pdfsig a.pdf Digital Signature Info of: a.pdf Signature #1: - Signature Field Name: signature - Signer Certificate Common Name: John Doe - Signer full Distinguished Name: CN=John Doe,O=No Brainer - Signing Time: Jun 03 2024 16:24:03 - Signing Hash Algorithm: SHA-256 - Signature Type: adbe.pkcs7.detached - Signed Ranges: [0 - 6428], [10527 - 10912] - Not total document signed - Signature Validation: Digest Mismatch. mutool sign (from mupdf-1.24.1) also complains about modified document after signing: $ mutool sign -v a.pdf Verifying signature 3: Distinguished name: cn=John Doe, o=No Brainer, ou=, email=, c=XX Certificate error: Self-signed certificate. framed boxes top aligned howto?

I have no problem of aligning two or more \framedtext boxes bottomwise on the baseline, nor centering them vertically within a \vcenter. But I do not succeed in placing them with their top aligned without the following trick: typeset them in a box, determine largestheight and then typeset again each within: \vbox to largestheight and \vill'ed to the bottom. All very well, but it is disastrous when there are side effects: twice typesetting then fails in some instances. I hope I described the question sufficiently clear, because an MWE is not so minimal. Hi, It seems, that you cannot use self defined conversions in \date: \defineconversion[mytest][X-\romannumerals] \starttext Self defined conversion: \convertnumber{mytest}{1} (OK)\\ Predefined conversion in date: \date[d=1][day:a] (OK)\\ Self defined conversion in date: \date[d=1][day:mytest] (not OK) \stoptext Is this a bug, or a feature? how to prevent item appearing in List of Figures

Along with your suggestion and that of Wolfgang I get what I need. I thought I was sending to the list but I copied and pasted from an email and didn’t realise that Wolfgang was included. I have only ever written to the list many years ago. I haven’t typeset a book before and various things are a challenge. The most recent is the following. I have \placelistoffigures some of which are logos (for the publisher and two granting bodies) that I have placed with: \setupcaptions[number=no] \starttplacefigure[ location={middle,high,low}, reference=fig:logo, title=] {\externalfigure[FCLogo][width=0.045\textwidth]} \stopplacefigure These are not part of the text and I don’t want them to appear in the list. The caption for the logo doesn’t appear in the List of Figures but the page number does. How can I prevent these particular graphics from being listed in the List of figures. Thanks, Charlie

BibTeX choking on comments in database

Hello list, I am using BibTeX under ConTeXt to typeset a publication. I noticed while building the publication ConTeXt raises the following non-fatal warning: ... This is BibTeX, Version 0.99d (TeX Live 2023/Debian) The top-level auxiliary file: Secret_Sauce.aux The style file: cont-au.bst Database file #1: ./References.bib I was expecting a `{' or a `('---line 2 of file ./References.bib : : % See the file Copying for details on copying conditions. (Error may have been on previous line) I'm skipping whatever remains of this entry (There was 1 error message) publications > loading formatting style from 'bibl-apa' open source > level 4, order 13, name '/usr/share/texmf/tex/context/bib/mkii/bibl-apa.tex' close source > level 4, order 13, name '/usr/share/texmf/tex/context/bib/mkii/bibl-apa.tex' ... All that's present on the first few lines of the References.bib BibTeX database are comments that begin with the '%' character. I replaced `strc-lev.lua` and rerun `context` but the error message stays the same. `context` command doesn't seem to recognize the change of `strc-lev.lua`. Should I run `mtxrun` or something before? wrong font scaling in LMTX?

All font sizes are scaled fine in MkIV. In both cases, I‘m running latest from 2024.05.17 16:32. Could anyone confirm the issue? BTW, this is the first time I indent the sample sent to the list with a single character (one tab) instead of two or four spaces. If the sample is wrong displayed in the medium you use with the mailing list, please tell me and I will go back to spaces instead of tabs. Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Dear Wolfgang, I have a book in preparation with running heads. Pagenumber marking | marking Pagenumber The chapter title page has empty headings. The publisher would like the page number centered on the Chapter title page. I manage to put it there but I don’t want it to run on the following pages. I have made various attempts but can’t manage it. Problem with PNG images in the latest standalone version

Hello. After a long time of using ConText from TeXlive installation I tried the standalone version again. I found that my old documents that I normally compile exclusively with the old ConText ver: 2018.04.04 00:51 MKIV beta fmt: 2019.5.2 latest version of standalone ConText compiles smoothly, seamlessly and most importantly very quickly and the results are the same at a glance. Unfortunately, the only problem I have not been able to solve is that the new standalone ConTeXt (ConTeXt ver: 2024.05.17 16:32 LMTX fmt: 2024.5.23) does not display PNG files in my PDF document for me. If I replace the PNG files with JPG files, the images are loaded and displayed in PDF file after compilation. I have also tried experimenting with the png method, see e.g. \setupexternalfigures[directory={../texlibrary/}, method=png], I have tried a few things, but it fails to work. I tried to search for something, but I couldn't find anything relevant. Can anyone advise me what the problem is or what I'm doing wrong? Is it caused by some version incompatibility or some setting? I apologize if something similar has already been addressed here, but I have not been able to follow the happenings in this mailing list for quite some time. Thanks a lot for any advice. Jaroslav

LUA API for page numbers

Hi everyone, I have recently migrated my PhD dissertation from LaTeX to ConTeXt. In LaTeX I was using kaobook, a template with lots of margin notes, but I was frustrated with the automatic placement of the notes. I implemented a system using overlays that automatically places the notes using lua. To know where the ideal placement should be (if they do not interact with each other), I use lua to insert a latelua whatsit that uses lpdf.getpos() to get the coordinate on the rendered page. However, I haven't found a way to get the page number using lua, and the tex macro \pagenumber is unreliable near pagebreaks. Furthermore, it would be helpful to know if there is a way to access the position and sizes of figures at the end. Thanks, Luc

I'm using mostly default ConTeXt settings, but an editor has warned I should avoid using hyphenation at the end of lines--at least for my particular audience. I've found manual text that says how to disable specific words from being hyphenated. Is there a whole-document switch to disable it? --Joel

Why is only the first frame protruding into the margin?

Hi, I used some code from the meta-fun manual to recreate a labelled frame around my sections. But the first framedtext protrudes a couple of mm into the margin. Only the first one in the page. I intentionaly added other sections and the frames aline to the margin ok. If I have text like this, it interprets the gap as needing a paragraph break: This is some text. This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph. Is there any macro I can place that will ignore the gap before it, treating the next text as if it belongs at the end of that sentence? Ex. This is some text. \ignorebreak This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph. That way output is more like this: This is some text. Hi all, \startshapetext works pretty well, but when I use \startsection \stopsection, shapes are not respected anymore. I use layers, to be able to place the content anywhere, but the issue remains without layers. Any clues ? Hi all, I'm trying to configure my document to use Libertinus font for the general text and Cormorant for the headings, but I can't get the cormorant-font applied (neither in the text self). The Libertinus fonts get loaded without problems but for cormorant I don't get even a message in log, as if it was invisible. weird \inlinetypebuffer interaction

Dear list, I have the following sample: \definefontfamily[mainface][tt][TeX Gyre Termes] \setupbodyfont[mainface] \starttext \startbuffer context --purgeall \stopbuffer inline \typeinlinebuffer block: \typebuffer \stoptext As long as there is no defined font family for mono, \typeinlinebuffer doesn’t convert -- into an en-dash (the same way as \typebuffer behaves). But as in the sample above, when a font is defined for mono (at least with \definefontfamily), \typeinlinebuffer converts -- into en-dashes (different from \typebuffer). Sorry, but how could I fix this \typeinlinebuffer? This is important for me, since two hyphens is one of the most common ways to marks options when invoking programs (which I try to explain to others). BTW, \sciteinlinebuffer seems have the same problem (in the scite module). Many thanks for your help, Pablo

[installation] "unzipping" gives 0K files on windows

hi! greetings of the day. ----- ### QoL improvements for installation * on win10 22h2 pc, i am facing problems (attached below) in installing context via [`context-win64.zip`]. * so, i had to run the install.bat again and again. * due to which the same step of "fetching 'http://lmtx.pragma-ade.com/install-lmtx//texmf.zip'" and "fetching 'http://lmtx.pragma-ade.com/install-lmtx//texmf-context.zip'" was performed repeatedly * this consumes lots of time, will & internet bandwidth & takes away the focus from other important part of installation So, 1. can `install.bat` (or whatever responsible) pick these zips from current directory if these exist there? of course, it should match their hash from the internet for verifying that these are same zips it needs. 2. rather than blindly removing the zips after (trying to) unzip, the `mtx-install.lua` should confirm if the "unzipping" hasn't resulted in these empty 0B files - as it seems some fundamental issue on windows (description & context attached below) ----- ### version number i understand that there's [only a 'latest' version, ... no stable release][context_history], * but still where is the version number for this latest shown on web? * i am looking for a plaintext way, i.e. which can be accessed from anywhere without any install. * so, it might be via some "Releases" section on an html webpage, or some file like xml, yml, json, etc containing release versions listing also, please don't use `:` colon or ` ` spaces in version as various package managers use version as directory names. so, my suggested one is: `2025.01.08.T1320` i.e. `yyyy.MM.dd.THHmm` i found various places which mentioned versions, but none of those mentioned "latest stable" version: * news on [main_page]: `The Wiki's ConTeXt installation is on version ConTeXt 2024.01.08 11:23 LMTX.` again, it shows the "wiki's context installation". not the release. * installation wiki: [check_installation]: `mtx-context | current version: 2024.04.01 08:59` it is aimed at illustration & outdated. no reason for it to be kept up-to-date. * [pragma-ade] shows: `2024-05-11 12:57 | 118925584` but it seems for the sources i guess? Hbox error with itemized list on second page

Hello, I'm attempting to format a resume in Context building off of a template I found online. I'm having an odd error with some bullets on the second page, however. I'm guessing it has something to do with my \definelayout for the second (and subsequent) pages, but I can't figure it out for sure. What is happening is that whichever bullets are at the top of the second page are being wrapped as if they were appearing on the first page, which has a different layout structure. Is there a way to consolidate index reference numbers by book?

The problem is in the indexi, it displays entreis like this: WHST.1.1: 11, 231, WB 1: 124, WB 1: 133, WB 2: 325, WB 2: 345, etc. In other words, it says WB 1 in front of every page number from the first workbook. Is there any way to consolidate the page numbers by book, e.g. output instead like this: WHST.1.1: 11, 231, WB1: 124, 133, WB 2: 325, 345 In other words, it list all page numbers for Workbook 1 right after WB 1: instead of placing WB 1 in front of every single page from Workbook 1? --Joel

How to place text, but make it completely hidden from viewers?

I have found a few situations is confusing/breaking ConTeXt: - Footnotes inside tables, figures, frames, margins (won't render the cited item). - Custom index items inside those items (displays "entry not flushed"). My workaround has been to define a size 0 font \tfz, then put it in a block like this: {\tfz% \starteffect[hidden]% \cite[author1912] \stopeffect% }% The problem this seems to create, is sometimes if placed between two passages, it interprets a need to create two paragraph breaks: \input knuth {\tfz% \starteffect[hidden]% \cite[author1912] \stopeffect% }% \input knuth It creates a paragraph break after the first knuth, then another after the hidden text, thereby creating a "double spaced" break between two paragraphs. Note the above code is used in many macros, so I don't have full control always where it appears, but its making the double-spaced break everywhere. Is there either (1) something can enter before this code that essentially has the effect of "backup to the previous paragraph" or (2) some other method of hiding text that makes it present on the page, but just not visible to the reader, that won't create a double spaced break, or take up any space what-so-ever? --Joel

Hi all, I am happy to share one way to get "pull quotes between two columns" (in a three columns layout). https://wiki.contextgarden.net/images/5/50/context_3columns_layout.pdf It's not based on Columns / ColumnSet / Page Columns. It just combines \startuseMPgraphic + build_parshape + \framed + \getshapetext (and several precautions regarding offsets, thicknesses, spacings, dimensions, box positioning...) It's not used in this case, but I discovered that \placelocalfootnotes and \reference \at \in etc... are fully functional with \getshapetext :-) The resulting layout isn't as complex as a newspaper, but a lot can be done (at the cost of some investment, but really, it's not that hard). LuaMetaTeX is definitely fun and pretty. Hi, making wonderful progress on my registers and translating from xml. There is one thing I can't figure out (and I or some other good soul may have asked in the past...). Is it possible to mark occurrences in footnotes? Ideally, the entry in the register would look like p. 100\high{20} to show that the term occurs in note 20 on p. 100. But if that's asking too much, I would be content with applying a processor (say, italic) to these register entries. From the looks of the tuc file, Context doesn't appear to "know" that a register entry is within a footnote. But Hans never ceases to amaze me, so maybe there is a way (short of applying special markup to these notes in the source)? All best Thomas

transparent color

I would like to use a transparent version of an existing color. Thus \definecolor[transparentcolor][color,t=0.2,a=1] instead of \definecolor[transparentcolor][r=..,g=..,b=..,t=0.2,a=1] because I do not know the rgb values of the color that must be made transparent, only its name. Why is this description environment not showing the correct title?

The items inside {} should be bold, then there is a gap before the next text. I am using this to display a simple timeline. Though the formatting looks perfect, very strangely when I compile it, it changes all of the dates to say "1540" (or whatever date was used first). Why is it showing the wrong title on the desc environment? --Joel

How to stop ConTeXt from thinking period is at the end of a sentence?

I noticed that some code is being rendered wrong, most especially apparent in a column environment where sometimes the text can get stretched a bit more to fit the column width nicer. If a sentence says "They appeared between c. 1200 BCE and c. 1500 CE." it appears ConTeXt thinks that the period in "c." marks the end of a sentence. As such, when setting the text, sometimes it will give a large space between "c." and "1200 BCE". How do I correctly tell ConTeXt that that period doesn't mark the end of a sentence, so shouldn't be given extra space afterwards? --Joel

Hi, I'm trying to typeset a poem from XML, but I can't figure out how to make the inbetween key working here. As the source is XML, I cannot just add an empty line to start a new group of lines inside \startlines...\stoplines. I guess, there must be a command to do that, but \par seems to have no effect here. How can this be done? Font switching for titles and subtitle not working as expected ?

Hi, I just jumbled upon this question on tex stackexchange : https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/715799/context-switching-font-for-b… Using the style key as suggested in the accepted answer works, but I've had a look in to this, and I don't understand why the original code does not work. I've also tried to find a solution using textcommand instead of command, but that makes no difference. Only one setting will be accepted. As soon as both, titles and subjects, are changed only the first change will be accepted. Is this a bug, or am I missing something? I am having trouble entering ConteXt commands in an rtl language, in this case Hebrew. How does one make the last(left hand) letter of the Hebrew word אשר a superscript? My experiments with \high{...} have not been successful so far in part, I think, because I have not got the brackets right. Any tips or pointers will be gratefully received. Alan

Catching up on an earlier thread by Ursula and Hraban, I'm also experienceing problems with \usemodule[zint] while \usemodule[t-zint] works fine. Running on macOS (ConTeXt ver: 2024.04.01 08:59 LMTX fmt: 2024.4.28). The issue seems somewhat unrelated to ConTeXt on first glance (??) if this is helpful. My code stopped working after I updated the OS (to Sonoma) and my homebrew cellar (to zint 2.13.0) while keeping a ConTeXt version from 2022 which compiled the barcodes perfectly fine before these updates. This being said, the newer ConTeXt version doesn't resolve the issue. Observations: 1) Zint (and Inkscape) is in my PATH and correctly sym-linked as specified in the wiki (~/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/lib/luametatex/zint/libzint.so <http://libzint.so/>). I don't think that 'sidebar' has much to do with it. This [setupsidenote] command inherits the options of [setupmargindata], [setupcounter] and [setupframed]. just like [setupenumeration] inherits the option of [setupcounter]. How to make superscript text match footnote mark formatting?

I tried \high{}, which I believe should be the way to superscript text, but if you compile this, you can see the first "1" and second "1" have entirely different formatting. Hi, I don't know if I can explain the problem I'm having. I made a project with 14 chapters. In each of them, there are graphics embedding metapost code. I proceed as follows : I compile each chapter alone with lmtx then I compile the project containing the 14 chapters. I didn't encounter any problems except with a graphic from the last chapter. It is indeed in chapter 14 but not in the project ! I give the code for this graph. Thanks. Hi all, has \startregister been superseded in luametatex or is it not yet implemented? I tried to read strc-reg.lmt but couldn't figure out what is going on. The following silly minimal test produces the expected result with mkiv but not in mkxl. Customize citation format of a bibliography (use the short form as reference format)

Hi, I'm trying to customize a cite format in a bibliography. Currently, I'm using the aps style which fits so far, except of the plain number as reference. In concrete, I want to change the following: - Use the first letter of the last name and the year as reference (this should be exactly the short form). It is more less also described here [1]. - Highlight publications of a certain author with an extra char (e.g. '>') Here is a minimal example (lets assume, every occurrence of Knuth should be highlighted): ``` \setupinteraction[state=start] \startbuffer[testdata] @Book{knuth1, author = {Donald E. Hi all, I’m slightly embarrassed because this should be easy, but I can’t figure out how to do this: in the tuc/tua file, I have the complete references of my document. How can I access it from within my Lua code? For instance, something like utilitydata.structures.references.collected.”MyReference”.references.realpage How can this be accessed?
