floatcombination alignment has changed?

Dear Christoph, I don’t know how to put figures horizontally using “\startfloatcombination”. Is there any reason to use “\startfloatcombination”? I usually use the following code when I need to display the figures. grid snapping problem

Dear context users: I would like to use grid snapping in my document: main text lines should be aligned to grid lines but figure caption text should not. I have this code: \setuplayout[grid=yes] \showgrid \setupcaptions[width=fit,align=last,headstyle={\ss\bfx},style={\ss\tfx}] \starttext \subsection{Subsection title} \input dawkins \input dawkins %startlinecorrection \startbaselinecorrection \setuplocalinterlinespace[line=2.2ex] \placefigure[][]{\input zapf }{\framed[width=0.6\textwidth,height=10ex]{figure}} \stopbaselinecorrection %stoplinecorrection \subsection{Subsection title} \input dawkins \subsection{Subsection title} \input dawkins \input dawkins \stoptext You can see that the caption is typeset as I wanted: smaller line height and it is not aligned to grid lines. floatcombination alignment has changed?

Hi, In recent versions of ConTeXt, floatcombinations are not placed centered by default anymore. Consider the following MWE in which two cows are placed side by side: \placefigure{}{ \startfloatcombination \placefigure{}{\externalfigure[cow.pdf]} \placefigure{}{\externalfigure[cow.pdf]} \stopfloatcombination} In version 2016.07.01_16.28, the combination is placed horizontally. In the latest version, the combination is flushed to the left. Is this change by intention? If yes, could please anybody tell me how to restore the previous behavior; changing the "location" does not help. Thank you for your effort. Cheers, Christoph

I see on the Internet and wiki ConTeXtgarden some examples, but I would be interested in details relating to the default layers and their names, their order. hbox after \page[disable]

I have a doublesided layout. On the right side i place the text, figures (if i have any) go on the left side. the MWE below works quite nice. But if i want the figure to be full height, two pages are skipped. This is becaus the hbox right below of the figure. I think it is placed during the \page[disable] pass. What can I do to avoid this hbox? Hi Hans, thank you for your help. I tried exactly as you suggested, which worked fine, but adopting for the case being with \setupfootertexts[\strut{\color[MyColor]{footers}}\strut][][][…same…] (further, footer texts change in the course of the document and call markings, page numbers etc.), I ended up with the same result as before. I will provide a minimal example as soon as possible next week. When I have \setupfooter[color=red, style=bold] (same goes with \setupfooter[style=red]) and a tex text text % <<<< page breaks here after typesetting >>>> \startplacefigure[ %location=force, % no matter what I do here title={Caption.} ] … something … \stopplacefigure other text that is moved to the following page as first object, the entire page including the figure’s rulers, caption, and the regular text prints in red (but not bold!?) when I incorporate the file via \component … into my project, but not when I typeset from within \startcomponent … \stopcomponent. Since “bold” does not seem to float the same way, I guess it is related to color handling at page breaks somehow. I already tried to \setupfloats[before=\strut] to “force” black bodyfont right before the figure (at least this is what I intended to do), but did not work. I’m sorry not to be able to provide a more elaborate minimal example asserting the exact conditionals of this behaviour at the moment as I need to hand in a report next week. Gidole font problem

Hi, I am triying to use custom font in my Context documents. However, it doesnt work without any obvious trace. Output is completely blank page. When I comment out definefontfamily and setupbodyfont commands, it works but output is in Latin Modern font. (another) bug with embeddedxtables

Settings made to \startembeddedxtable or \startxrow they will only work in the first call of the macro. In every further call the settings are ignored. On the other hand, settings made to \startxcell work for every call of the macro. I assume this is a bug. "fake" space for better reflow

If I compile a small document \starttext \input knuth \stoptext and then use in the adobe reader "view->zoom->reflow" I get as result Thus,Icametotheconclusionthatthedesignerofanewsystemmustnotonlybetheimplementerandfirstlarge--scaleuser;thedesignershoulda I know it is due to the missing space glyph. With pdflatex I would try to use \pdfinterwordspaceon but this primitive never found its way into luatex. Is there any solution? Dear list, sorry for asking this question again, but I’m afraid I really need to solve this as soon as possible. I have the following sample: \setupwhitespace[5em] \startsetups[smallwspa] \setupwhitespace[small] \setupblank[small] \stopsetups \setupitemize[each][indenting=no, setups=smallwspa] \starttext \input knuth \startitemize \dorecurse{5}{\item this is my item\par second paragraph\par third paragraph } \stopitemize \stoptext I need a bigger whitespace outside the list that inside them. I need \blank[medium] between each item and \blank[small] for each \par inside the item. setups doesn’t work for paragraphs inside list items and inbetween doesn’t work either. Different text versions in columns?

Hi, this is related to the current thread about TwoColumns, but different: For changes in bylaws or similar legal texts, I need to typeset the old and new version side by side, while paragraphs should start at the same height, different lengths of paragraphs to be balanced with whitespace. I’d like to have both versions on one page (i.e. in columns). That means, the streams module is not suitable, if it would work in MkIV at all. Is there a better solution than using a table? copy & paste source code from documents

Dear List, currently, I have to compose technical documents with a lot of source code in it. There're readers demands for a way to copy&paste this source code directly from those documents into their terminals. I tried ConTeXt’s attachment functionality, it is … ok. But most people don’t like files attatched to PDFs. Moreover, they must open it in an editor before getting contents in terminals. So, is there any possibility in ConTeXt/Lua a document reader can click on a source code statement and the content of an external file (the plain code, without any typesetting) will be loaded into the clipboard, so that they can paste this plain source code into their terminal programs to use it directly? Any help is welcome, Tobias

gridline question

Dear list members: I use \setuplayout[grid=yes] option in my document to snap lines to gridlines. But I don't want figure text to be snapped to grids. Figure text is typeset in smaller fonts and the lineskip becomes too big. How can I turn snap to grid off for a block of text or for figures or figure legends? Strange behaviour of itemize inside tabulate

Hello, I have the following minimal example % \setupitemgroup % [itemize] % [each] % [autointro,packed] % [symbol=2] \starttext \starttabulate[|l|p|] \NC \bf Druk procedé \NC \bf Opmerking \NC\NR \NC Offset \NC \strut weinig problemen als onverpakt\crlf \NC\NR \NC Digitaal \NC beduidend lager i.v.m. warmte fixatie. \startitemize \startitem zo snel mogelijk weer verpakken na het printen. \stopitem \stopitemize\par \NC\NR \stoptabulate \stoptext When not uncommenting the setupitemgroup the tabulate appears as expected. Problem with setuptagging and ebgaramond font

This was submitted over a year ago, but probably got lost in the run-up to the 2015 annual meeting. It is still a problem with ConTeXt ver: 2016.11.18 22:20 MKIV beta fmt: 2016.11.19 int: english/english luajittex, 1.0.1. Strange spurious character

Hi Hans, After having updated my installation of ConTeXt, I noticed the presence of a spurious « ß » character at the top of every document, or sometimes in the footer, or in the header. Also in the example below the text is typeset with bold italic, even though there is no request for it. bug in \directsetup?

I’m using latest beta from 2016.11.17 14:19. There is a weird behaviour: the links from TOC for the first sections reach the chapter title an not the section title. All other sections have their right destinations from the table of contents. And bookmarks for first sections have also the right destinations. Of course, this would work as expected, if I avoided the \directsetup (having a wrong interline space). If this isn’t a bug, what am I missing? Dear list, and in particular Hans, I asked the same question on stackexchange before today (http://tex.stackexchange.com/q/337738/52406) and got the answer that what I want to do might not be possible. In my large document I have exercises (typeset with \startexercise \stopexercise, defined as an enumeration). Is it possible to use modes (or any other trick) to be able to compile the same file and get only the exercises. For example, context file.tex should give the full document, while context --mode=exercises file.tex should give only all the exercises (or just everything "in one mode")? /Mikael

Here is something I do not understand. Possibly I am doing something wrong. The following code is fine, within <<>> the current contextversion is printed. \def\mymacro{\directlua{tex.print("\\contextversion")}} \starttext calling mymacro <<\mymacro>>\par \stoptext However calling \mymacro from inside \startxmlsetup .. \stopxmlsetup does not work and results in <<\contextversion>>. I guess that the catcode regime in that environment is to blame. But how do I change that in order to get things working? I looked into the LuaTeX-manual where catcodes in relation to tex.print are treated, but in vain and could not find how to. What do I have to change? Hans van der Meer

Here is another question, I was wondering about. What is the ConTeXt’s way to provide the “right” (or “left”) argument when \definereferenceformat[text=…] is set? Starting from this example: \starttext \definereferenceformat[infig][text={Figure }] \startplacefigure[reference=fig:A] Some figure. \stopplacefigure This is \infig[fig:A]. \stoptext I would like to output “This is Figure 1 a.” Obviously I can type “This is \infig[fig:A]\,a.” to get the desired result; however it does not seem very “ConTeXt-ish” to me as “This is \in{Figure}{a}[fig:A].” is much more concise. Hi, I’m not sure if this is the intended behaviour of the system, but I want to typeset “This is Figure 1.1 in Chapter A Good Story” in the attached minimal example. However, setting up the referencing interaction to text, this typesets “This is 1.1 in Chapter A Good Story”. The same holds true, when the reference format is not defined via \definereferenceformat, but also in \in{Figure}[fig:A]. Problem with lucida

I might be doing wrong, but for now I have the strong impression that \xmlchainatt is at fault. It does not break the callchain as soon as a match is found. Chemical reaction...

I am busy to edit an older article in which there are a couple of chemical fromulas and reactions. However, I am stuck because the following throws me an error when uncommenting the line with “\chemical{2H^\oplus}{~waterstof (zuur)}” (something with $ inserted…) Another aspect is, that the {DEZ} does not appear. Creeps (binding gutter / margin correction in imposition)

Hi together, this is not really a practical request, but an interesting (I think) idea... ConTeXt can do simple imposition (arranging pages on sheets, see \setuparranging), but in professional imposition you need to compensate for the paper thickness in folds to keep pages readable - you can move the outer pages of a fold out of the gutter (spine), or move the inner pages to the spine. (This is called creep in English, Bundversatz in German.) That means, your outer margin will have different width, depending on the position of the page in its fold. See e.g. https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/printing-booklets.html A guy on the LilyPond mailing list had the interesting idea to adapt the line width to this creep, to keep an even outer margin - it would mean that TeX needs to know about imposition while breaking lines. It first seemed that framedtext is doing what I was after but it turned out that only the frame is adjusted to natural width, the underlying box is still full width. Quoting from the command reference: \startframedtext inherits \setupframedtext and \setupframedtext ... indenting = inherits \setupindenting I interprete this as \setupindenting is carried to the inside of the framedtext but this thus not happen. After performing the update I wanted to generate the font database following instructions on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Fonts_in_LuaTeX. Clickable question/answer numbers

Dear list, I have a pretty large text with a lot of questions and answers, and want the user(students) to be able to click in the pdf to go from a certain exercise to its answer, and back. I have a solution (see below) to go from answers to questions, but not the other way around. I simply have no idea on how to make the red text (in the head) in the example question clickable with the answer on the next page as target. As you can see, the answer has a tag A:Q:test (I want to set these automatically in that manner), and clicking the green text I get to the correct place. I just don't see how to make the "Question 1.1" clickable with that target. I hope I make myself clear. If it matters, in the solution one could assume that the optional tag of the \startquestion \stopquestion is given for all questions. floats in xtable flush with frame

Hello, I want to place floats in an xtable but cannot get rid of the gap between the float and the frame. I sort of can eliminate the gap on the top with \setupfloat [offset=-2.5pt] but this doesnt seem to be the right way. Is there a parameter to control this? Influence enumeration spacing

Dear list members, In the MWE below the amount of vertical space between the enumeration header and the question text seems to fully controlled by the global \setupwhitespace[big] setting. I would like to reduce the distance beteen the enumeration header and the question text but inbetween={\blank[nowhite]} seems to be ignored. I tried none, disable etc. as well. Of course I could set \setupwhitespace[small] but this would influence the amount whitespace between my paragraph text which should be set to big. grid, interlinespace

Hello I want my text on a grid and there should be no gap between the top and the capital letters of the first line. I managed to get this by changing the height parameter of \setupinterlinespace with a factor I calculated for the font with this formula: CapHeight/exheight / line = height CapHeight and exheight are font specific numbers that I got from https://tug.org/TUGboat/tb34-2/tb107sharpe.pdf for lmroman this gives me: 683 / 431 / 2.8 = .566 for height in interlinespace Although there is no gap to the top lines are jumping. making the factor bigger helps. but smaller fonts wont snap to the grid. What is happening here? And is this method of changing the height the right one? bug in parsed-xml?

Dear list, I have the following sample: \setupindenting[yes, big] \starttext \starttyping[option=parsed-xml] <code> <text> <body> word </body> </text> </code> \stoptyping \stoptext I’m afraid I found two issues: For some reason, ConTeXt adds extra space before the last line. I think this may be a bug. With indenting set for the rest of the document, ConTeXt applies it also to typing. As far as I know, typing shouldn’t be automatically indented. ConTeXt and duotone graphics

Hello list, I have just came across this little script which allows to create duotone pdfs with DeviceN channel. The script takes two grayscale tifs as arguments and returns a pdf duotone. I guess it shouldn't be too difficult to include it in the ConTeXt processing chain. Probably one could include a command in a source file which would reference both files used for creation of a duotone image and the resulting image would be used in the final pdf. Hi all, I just edited http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Text_Editors, reordered, updated, killed some discontinued programs etc. I didn’t delete wiki pages of outdated apps, though. There’s still a lot of room for enhancement, e.g. the feature columns make no sense this way. I’d like to know: - What editor(s) do you use for ConTeXt? - Are there any other editors with ConTeXt (not only LaTeX) support? How about including the vim support files in the distribution (like the SciTE support files)? I recently discovered Textadept, a relative of SciTe’s, also available for OSX - did anyone try to adapt SciTE ConTeXt support for that? Algorithmic, Floats and line numbers.

Hi, I'm trying to use Algorithmic module with floating and line numbering. In the first attempt, I get the "code" with lines numbered. But isn't floating. In the second one, line numbers disappear inside the floating block. Two questions: * How can I get line numbers inside floating block? * In algorithms, I think it has more sense to number only "logical" lines. The second state is so long that wraps into another line. Is it possible to number only logical lines? Dear list members: I would like to set up Tex Gyre Adventor sans serif font as my math font (even if it doesn't have math symbols). I have two questions related to this problem. 1. In latex I can specify math font versions, define a specific font as math serif / normal, another as math sans serif etc. (http://milde.users.sourceforge.net/LUCR/Math/math-font-selection.xhtml) Is this possible in context, and if yes, how? 2. If I specify Tex Gyre Adventor as default math font in context, I get compile error. marginal heads as standard option?

I mean, not only the number, but the whole title. Probably this option should allow the user to set head in the inner, outer, left and right margins. Do you have a way to get a paper version of the same thing without the printer giving multiple pages showing the step progression? I was hoping ConTeXt would provide a more integrated approach to producing different outputs while still maintaining the functionalities of the presentation output. Perhaps the technology will catch up or perhaps the need for paper output will become obsolete. But some things move rather slowly in the high school education line. Multiple Choice Quiz with self marking funciton

Hi, I am new to ConTeXt but have been using LaTeX for years. Just before I came across ConTeXt, I ran across Acrotex eDucation Bundle. One of its packages allows us to create multiple choice quizzes which has some self-harming features when done on screen. It also has a paper equivalent. I am wondering if anyone is willing to share his/her setups for multiple choice, with or without the self-harming feature. I am also wondering if ConTeXt has that self-harming feature too. Hi, I'm new to ConTeXt, having discovered it only last week. I have been using LaTeX for years, coming up with my own solutions to work around some of the typographical tweaks I want. ConTeXt seems promising but I have yet to find an example of what I would like to produce. I would like to see examples of equivalents of Beamer presentations using equivalents of \onslide and its variants for uncovering contents. I have read about steps (example file refuse to compile) and animation (does not seem to be what I want). Also, I would like to see how mode can be used to allow me to have a screen version and a paper version of my content. I do not want a handout with 2*3 "screenshots". I am hoping to use a 12pt font size on a "small" 4:3 screen size which has the same line wrapping when put into an A4 landscape 2-column page. Beamerarticle can possibly do the job but it willeke quite a bit of tweaking to look nice. When I ventured into LaTeX in the late 90's. I had helpful colleagues who passed me their files and I learnt a lot just from editing and amending the contents. Google helped in the recent years in resolving issues. As for ConTeXt, Google seems to be less helpful, partly because searching for ConTeXt often lead to other things (unfortunate that it's name is used in many other context). I am now a lone Latex user in my school and venturing into Context alone. I am hoping someone will share their sample files for me to learn from. I will raise other requests in separate threads. Mysterious overfull box

Therefore I used the \start...\stopalignment with the option flushright. \starttext \startalignment[flushright] Why is this hbox underfull? \stopalignment \stoptext However, this gives me Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 3--4 []\3>modern-designsize-12pt-rm-tf-0--0 Why is this hbox un-der-full? in the log. ConTeXt Group Font Sponsoring

Hi all, At the recent 10th ConTeXt meeting, we also had the 6th members meeting of the ConTeXt Group. The ConTeXt Group uses the annual members meeting to keep track of the activities that are deployed by and for our members as well as ConTeXt users in general. A late addition to the meeting agenda was the addition of a discussion point about the newest font proposal from the e-Foundry (TeX Gyre) team. The proposal dates back to April 2015, and in summary, along with continuous improvements to the existing Latin Modern, TeX Gyre and DejaVu-math fonts, it introduces three new project deliverables: * A sans-serif Math Open Type Format font (for use in headings) * A heavy Math Open Type Format font (for use in headings) * A monospace font with math symbols (for use in editors) The project is expected to run for multiple years as there is a lot of work involved. TeX-related projects like this will always eventually get done, but with the addition of funding the timeline can be shortened considerably, from potentially decades back to a few years. The ConTeXt Group has a small positive balance each year, and now that we have a bit of a buffer in the bank, we can afford to look for ways to use our surplus to help TeX-related development. ConTeXt has been using the e-Foundry fonts since well before the first official release, so the members meeting decided to offer their financial support to this newest e-Foundry project. It was decided to earmark 500€ for each year of the upcoming three membership years for that purpose. Not a staggering amount of money, but we currently do not have enough members to safely invest more. And we do consider it an investment: all ConTeXt users will directly benefit from those new fonts once they become available. More funding would make the project run that much faster, so if you want to help out, you could make a donation directly via the TUG donations page at https://www.tug.org/donate/dev.html (TeX Gyre fonts contribution). ANN: Updated Vim scripts for ConTeXt

Hello, attached you find an update of the Vim scripts for ConTeXt. A few highlights: - jump commands ([[, ]], [{, ]}, ...); - jump to file included with \project, \component, etc... by typing gf when the cursor is above the filename; - tp (TeX paragraph) text object (e.g., use gqap to reflow a paragraph); - i$ and a$ text objects; - better integration with MetaPost (indentation and autocompletion inside \startMP...\stopMP... works automatically); - syntax highglighting can be enabled for any nested filetype (MetaPost and Lua are enabled by default); - compiler plugin, supporting mtxrun and Makefiles; - Asynchronous typesetting with :ConTeXt command. I plan to submit these changes for inclusion in Vim, but I'd like to get some feedback, especially re background typesetting and especially from Windows users. font size switching

Dear context users: It seems to me that some of the the font size switching commands do not work as described in the context reference manual (contextref.pdf, 27/09/2013), e.g. \tfx. The manual writes on page 109 that "Note that these commands select font sizes relative to the default, not relative to whatever font size is currently in eﬀect." But in my case \tfx switches to smaller compared to the size in effect, and not smaller compared to default size. In additions I couldn't find command for returning to default size after a font switching command. How to switch (back) to normal size? Here is an MWE: \starttext default, {\tfa larger (a)}, {\tfb larger (b)}, {\tfc larger (c)}, {\tfd larger (d)} default, {\tfx smaller (x)}, {\tfxx smaller (xx)} This is normal text, (default 10pt). {\tfa This is larger (a).} Normal again. {\tfx This is smaller, (x).} This is normal size. \bfa This is larger bold (a). \tf This is normal larger (a), \backslash tf doesn't change size. How to switch back to normal size, if there is no suffix for normal size? \tfx And why isn't this smaller (x) if the suffix changes size relative to default size as the manual states? \stoptext Thank you in advance, bcsikos

Reduced whitespace when nesting different itemgroups

Dear list, I have noticed a strange behavior when nesting different itemgroups: The whitespace before the lower-level group is reduced. This does not happen when nesting itemgroups of the same kind. And this can somehow be circumvented by setting [columns, one], see MWE below. Is this expected behavior, or a bug? xml: spurious empty spaces

Hi all, below is a slightly silly example that demonstrates a problem I’m having: I want to process (in Lua) the xml element “b” only when it has an attribute “display” set. This works, but elements without the attribute leave spurious spaces in the pdf output. The workaround I’m currently using is if xml.attribute(e, "./", "display", "") ~= "yes" then context.unskip() else … but that seems like a kludge. Is this expected behavior, or should this be fixed? PDF/A generation

Dear list, (especially Luigi) for online publication I need to create a PDF/A compliant output file. Does anyone have any experience with it and can tell me whether my setup will work? So far I'm using \setupbackend [ format={pdf/a-2a}, profile={default_cmyk.icc,default_rgb.icc,default_gray.icc}, ] \setupstructure[state=start,method=auto] I chose PDF/A-2a because there I can have PDF 1.7 which keeps the file size down but I can also switch to PDF/A-1a. I have *no* external pixel graphics, just included PDFs which are also produced by ConTeXt with the same setup. Online I found Luigi's paper on PDF/A-1a [1]. However, even after reading I'm unsure whether `intent` is optional or required. Since I don't own Adobe Acrobat (nor am I using Windows) I cannot verify the resulting output. Side effect of leftmargin for formulas on \inright

Hanging hyphen in the left margin in Portuguese

Dear list, In Portuguese many times we have words with one or two explicit hyphens; for example: “tornar-nos-emos” (we shall become). When at the end of a line, it is mandatory to repeat the explicit hyphen both at the end and in the beginning of the next line. I managed to do this using: \definebreakpoints[portuguese] \definebreakpoint [portuguese] [-] [type=5,left=-,right=-,middle=-] \setbreakpoints[portuguese] If I use \setupalign[hz,hanging] I get the first hyphen hanging in the right margin. Becoming a TeX/ConTeXt poweruser

Hello, I was fed up with LaTeX, and became a newbie user of ConTeXt, and I think it's great and I really agree with the philosophy. However, I also have to agree with some of what has been said about the lack of good documentation for those learning ConTeXt. I've built a couple of simple documents using ConTeXt, but I'm having trouble customizing to get some functionality that I used to get from LaTeX packages, and to customize things to fix issues that I had with LaTeX. I typeset technical papers and books with complex diagrams (e.g. xypic), charts and tables, tables embedded in tables, images inside tables, among other things. I'm hoping to become a poweruser of TeX through ConTeXt and LuaTeX. >From what I've read on this list so far, knowledgeable members of the community say that the key functionality to ConTeXt is in the "core". I would like to become a power user of TeX/LuaTex/ConTeXt by learning ConTeXt from the ground up and understanding the core at the source code level. I think this will make me skilled at rolling my own styles and fixing issues on my own as I encounter them. I'm an experienced software engineer with some knowledge of TeX (on the level of Knuth's "The TeXbook") and I'm happy to learn Lua. I want to actually read and understand the mkiv core source code and, just to start, understand how simple directives (for example \startitemize ... \stopitemize), are compiled from end to end and where their macro source code comes from (In this example I think it's in tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/typo-itm.mkiv but I'm not positive). I know that \startitemize ...\stopitemize is very customizable, but I would like to learn ConTeXt by learning how I could, for example, build the itemize environment myself from scratch. Can someone give me pointers on the best place to start? Then I can learn the code on my own (and not be a pest on this list :) ).

Asciidoc --> ConTeXt for presentations

Hello, I plan to adopt AsciiDoc(tor) as general markup for my writing (web content, blog posts, study notes etc.) and I’d prefer to use ConTeXt for my & wife’s presentations over something like reveal.js, so wonder if anyone has some experienec with the AsciiDoc --> ConTeXt (converted by Pandoc) toolchaincan?
