Hi, We're getting close to tex live freeze and part of that process is a luatex release as well as a context snapshot. There have been no betas for a while and the reason is that I've been cleaning up some code as well as optimizing some bits. As a consequence it could be that there are some issues with an upcoming luatex / context pair but because there has been no real fundamental changes in the typesetting part problems will be easy to sort out (like using an undefine lua function or so). Anyway, if you are not that adventurous or depend on the current version, you can best make a copy or not update from the garden too eager, just wait till the lists reports no crashes. defining bug not setting up blank spaces

Problem with Russian letters in itemize

Hello, I'm trying to use Russian (Cyrillic) letters for itemize list but without luck. This is small example to show a problem: ---------------------- 8< --------------------- \mainlanguage[ru] \setupbodyfont[cambria] % \setupbodyfont[computer-modern-unicode] % \setupbodyfont[dejavu] \starttext \startitemize[a] \item первый \item второй \stopitemize \stoptext ---------------------- 8< --------------------- Compilation (typesetting) of the example by context (curr. ver. 2017.01.27) gives a PDF file with Latin letters. According to 'language-mkiv.pdf' (found in texmf-context/doc/context/documents/general/manuals) The \type{alphabetic} converter adapts to the current main language. When a language has no special alphabet, the regular 26 characters are used. the use of Latin letters is expected behaviour if current language has not special alphabet. But Russian alphabet (based on Cyrillic) has differences with Latin one. Did I face a bug or I misunderstand the documentation and I have to use (add?) another command to obtain Russian letters for item? Also, it is possible that I incorrectly use 'setupbodyfont' but I tested all cases shown above and they work fine, expect the fact that 'cambria' case gives me italic variant of font while 'computer-modern-unicode' and 'dejavu' use "roman" font. frac opentype feature broken by \setbreakpoints[compound]

Hello list, I found an interference between the "frac" opentype feature and \setbreakpoints[compound], which make the former fail when you have a numerator more than 2 digit wide. I found it with Adobe Garamond Premier Pro: with \setbreakpoints[compound], when the fraction had a 3-digit (or more) numerator, the denominator stayed high as the numerator (like a superscript). Here I replaced Garamond Premier Pro with the freely available "Lato" font, to let you reproduce the problem. The outcome is different, but still erroneous: \setbreakpoints[compound] makes ConTeXt ignore the "frac" feature at all. Please try this: \definefontfeature[frac][frac=yes] \definefontfamily[default][rm][lato][features=frac] \setupbodyfont[default,rm,11pt] \setbreakpoints[compound] \starttext \addff{frac} 1/3, 1/100, 1/1000, {\setbreakpoints[reset]1633/100}, 2345/12. \stoptext A workaround is a local \setbreakpoints[reset] limited to the fraction. (tested on http://live.contextgarden.net/) In fact, I failed to declare picture variable inside with text inside one *MPcode environment and pass it to another safely (text either disappears or changes to other text, and this time ConTeXt returns no error), that surely is a bug? Problem with \seeindex and two + entries

ConTeXters, An index register entry with two + components does not get set properly. With the following example, the text “/see Mmm+Plus/” should be on a separate, indented line as “Plus /see Mmm+Plus/” but I see it on the first line as “Aaa /see Mmm+Plus/”. Then the output is “ 2, 2” I checked the contents of tempM and m and found that they are same even though I didn’t touch m. I want to remove the last row of tempM while keeping the table m untouched. Comical error..

I am just starting on a new project and haven't fussed with body fonts yet. I specified specific fonts for the half and title pages. For the copyright page thus far I just used the default whatever that is. On that page the lower case "e" came out as a lower case "c" in every instance. I do have the following in my macros.tex subfile which I pass on from job to job: ------------------------- \setupbodyfontenvironment[default][em=italic] \usemodule[simplefonts][size=10pt] \definefontfeature [default] [default] [protrusion=quality,expansion=quality] \setupalign[hz,hanging] ------------------------------------- maybe there is somethng funky there. specifying body fonts

Reently I saw an example of setting up the various formats of a single body font such as \rm, \it \bf, \sc etc. with examples of using these in Gyre font. It may have been in the wiki or here on the list There were examples of slanted type vs.true italic as I recall. I should have copied it but I didn't (at age 84 I forget to do things). align text and formula

Dear list, I would like to include text on the same line as a formula. The text needs to be left-aligned and the formula needs to be mid-aligned (as per normal). I’ve tried various solutions from the mathalign MyWay but have not succeeded to get the desired result sofar. Below a M-Not-WE. Clearly, the formula is not positioned correctly yet. \Umathquad\displaystyle not set

Dear ConTeXt users, I have a custom slide template that I borrowed from another source years ago. It works well on my Debian machine, but when I try to build the PDF on a docker vm on Gitlab, I run into the \Umathquad\displaystyle not set error. Surprisingly, that error doesn't crop up on my machine. Bibliography sorting order by Czech alphabet in Context

I need to be able to set the sorting order of the bibliographical references by Czech alphabet (e.g., C,Č,D,....Ch,...etc.). English sorting puts Ch before C or Č, but in Czech it needs to be after D. Overriding a font face in a typescript

ConTeXters, How can I override one or two faces in a typescript? I prefer to use the semibold face in my document wherever an emboldened face is used. I would prefer to refer to it as \bf, or style=bold. (Similarly for semibolditalic.) I currently reproduce the existing typescript in my document, substituting the semibold variants for the bold. Is it possible to use the standard typescript by reference (\usetypescript) and then override those two faces? -- Rik

Encoding reserved characters in URI query strings

Let's say I want a link to plot x+2 in Wolfram|Alpha. I need to catenate "http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=" and "plot+x%2B2". Is there any way already available in ConTeXt to translate reserved characters like "+" to the percent-hexcode "%2B"? Something like \encode[plot x+2] would become plot+x%2B2 Or more generally, some languages have a query constructor like this \queryURI [http://www.wolframalpha.com/input] [i=plot x+2] which would construct the URI http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=plot+x%2B2 I could write my own, of course. But no need to reinvent the wheel. How to use \setupitemgroup?

Dear context users: I have troubles using \setupitemgroup. I tried to use it based on the contextgarden wiki page (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupitemgroup) description, but either my understanding how to use it is not correct or the command doesn't behave as described on the wiki page. In the following example I want the items to be in a numbered, packed list, where the item numbers are followed by ), like 1) 2) etc. If I don't add stopper=) option, I get a numbered list, but it's not packed. If I add stopper=), the list becomes an unnumbered list, but packed. I use context standalone ConTeXt ver: 2016.09.24 12:40 MKIV beta. I attach the resulted pdfs. What do I do wrong? URL styling in btx bibliography

ConTeXters, Is there a user-level control for the styling of urls in the new bibliography system? I use \setupurl[style=\addff{f:ns}\ss] (where f:ns is a fontfeature definition for lining/new style numerals) for the rest of the document. The bibliography honors this formatting for urls present in bibtex note entries, but persists in serif and oldstyle (the document defaults) for urls provided by bibtex url entries. -- Rik

Hi, I was wondering if: -------------------------------- Basically have complete mathml markup or some other kind of html math output that is completely capable of doing what is now done for pdf output. This would elminate the need for the clumsy workarounds that mathjax, for example, provides---there appears to be no easy way to convert arbitarilly/personally written latex packages/classes into something that mathjax can understand. Obviously the original latex code could still remain in the resulting html/mathhtml output so that people would still have access to the "original" source code. One of my motivations is to allow for google translate to work on html math documents... it WORKS provided you add 'notranslate' to the spans: <span class="math inline">, <class="math display">latex math commands/span> etc environments. However LaTeX commands that mathjax is not familiar with are not rendered.... I realize this may be a better question on mathjax but I regard that project, while laudable, wrong headed as the real problem should be solved by a proper TeX-like engine like ConTeXt can solve this problem(s)? -------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Federer Fanatic Extraordinaire :-)

I'm having some difficulties with nested itemgroups. I have also found out that, bizarrely, uncommenting the first itemgroup fixes the issue. This is the behaviour I get on the TeXLive 2016 version of ConTeXt, I don't have the latest minimals installed to test. Thanks in advance for any help with this matter!

Hi, I'm trying to declare a new font style. I declare it with \definefontstyle [sx] [sx] but the compilation fails when I use \sx in my document. I found an older message from 2009 similar to my issue but with public solution. May be some private response from Hans Hagen is missing? Scripting with TeXLua

Ahoi, Moonshiners! I rebuilt my invoice-writing setup and moved most of the logic from a python script to Lua within ConTeXt. Now I would like to replace the Python script completely. Can you suggest libraries that work well with texlua (or are even built-in), WRT - OO classes (ATM I’m using "classy" from https://github.com/siffiejoe/lua-classy) - UI (curses would be enough, maybe Qt, rather not wx. I found tekUI, but it won’t compile on OSX) - JSON (ATM I’ve my customers database in a JSON file, but I should probably move that to a Lua table anyway.) I do remember a short tutorial that described how one could insert a text block in between two text columns or at the side of a column etc. I have downloaded the big manual today but that little tutorial would help. My questions: 1.Do you recall what I am referring to? 2. If so, what is its name? 3. Is it current enough to be useful today? Bug in \startdocument

Dear devs, It is really convenient to set PDF metadata in \startdocument, however I noticed that there is a bug. The PDF subject is not set using metadata:subject but with metadata:subtitle. This is not a big issue by itself but merely a little confusing. What’s worse is that using metadata:subject throws an error which is completely unexpected at this point. Below you find the error message and a MWE to reproduce. --- ! A better \definesymbol sought

ConTeXters, I have been using \definesymbol for a while, and for most purposes it suffices. However, there is one thing that it does not do that perhaps it should. What it does not do is offer the option to center one glyph over another (horizontally and/or vertically) when it should be centered. Rather, it leaves the work to a process of tuning the horizontal and vertical levers (kern and raise here) to get something that is close, but rarely perfect. I also see some problems with the horizontal spacing around the new symbol, but that may be a function of the underlying glyphs here. The following example shows what I mean \definefont [Inits] [dejavusans] \usesymbols[mvs] \define\SqSteel{% \tfc \symbol[martinvogel 2][SquareSteel] } \define\RedSansA{% \tfx \Inits{\red A} } \definesymbol [MyMark] [\SqSteel\kern-.87em{\raise.38ex\hbox{\RedSansA}}] \define\Test{Some text \symbol[MyMark] some more text.\par} \starttext \Test \setupbodyfont[8pt] \Test \setupbodyfont[18pt] \Test \scale[factor=40]{\Test} \stoptext Can anyone suggest a better way to compose such symbols than using the raw TeX commands used here? Chapter-head: number, title and subtitle

Dear all, This is the upper half of a post I submitted on jan 7 with two questions (which was rather foolish of me), of which the second has already been answered by Aditya Mahajan. The first, still open, question was: Presently I’m restyling a PhD-dissertation to make it conform to the requirements of an external publisher. One of the items is the content and layout of the chapter-heads. What would be needed as a chapter-head, of Chapter 1 for instance, is, on two or, occasionally three, lines: - Chapter 1 (midaligned, boldface, smallish size (\tfa)) - some vertical space - Chapter title (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfc) - some vertical space - (for some chapters) Chapter subtitle, (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfb or smaller) Can ConTeXt be tweaked to yield such a chapter-head? problem with math: "\left" leads to "udefined symbol"

hi everybody, after a 2 year hiatus I'm just giving `context' a second try (so, really not much experience so far). I updated to the latest version (0.63) before proceeding. two observations: 1. in a new document including assorted equations everything went fine until I tried something like \startformula x = \left 1 + 2 \right \stopformula which caused an error: 8<------------------------------------------------------------------ ! Chapter-subtitle and a short version of a( long) chapter title to fit in the header

Dear all, Presently I’m restyling a PhD-dissertation to make it conform to the requirements of an external publisher. One of the items is the form of the chapter-heads. What would be needed on the first page of a chapter, Chapter 1 for instance, is: - Chapter 1 (midaligned, boldface, smallish size (\tfa)) - some vertical space - Chapter title (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfc) - some vertical space - (for some chapters) Chapter subtitle, (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfb or smaller) Furthermore I would need a header with the chapter-title on the even-numbered pages and the section-title on the odd-numbered pages. The problem here is that some of the chapter titles are too long for this and they overlap the pagenumbers in the header. That is why I would need a shorter form of the chapter title and in some cases a main title and a subtitle. As far as I know, in the command to start a chapter there is no possibility to introduce, in addition to the special version of the title for the ToC, another special, shorter, version of the title for the header. nor a subtitle. Using key as numbering in \placepublications

Hi, I'm writing my thesis using ConTeXt but I'm not satisfied with the way the publication list is displayed. I'd like to display the key, in brackets, in front of every publication in the list (i.e. replace the [2] numbering in front of it by [Sha07] for example). The numbering option only offers yes, no, short and bib. I'd like a "key" option. How can I achieve that? Any clue, example and/or suggestion is welcome, Thanks in advance, Antoine

Custom pretty printer pass option to buff-imp-<mycustomformat>.lua

I'm customizing a pretty printer and referencing the buff-imp-lua.lua and buff-imp-lua.mkiv files. I'd like to add a conditional to the .lua file say buff-imp-custom.lua. What is a good way to pass an option from my .tex file to conditionally format with the pretty printer? I'd like to use the same buff-imp-custom.lua and .mkiv pairs of files instead of creating multiple files. The .mkiv file defines e.g.: \definetyping [CUSTOM1] [\c!option=custom] I'd like to add say CUSTOM2 but pass an option that would be visible to the same buff-imp-custom.lua file. Perhaps something like this?: \definetyping [CUSTOM2] [\c!option=custom,<option visible to same lua file as CUSTOM1?>] Thanks -- Lorenz

nested colors problem

dorecurse problem

ConTeXters, When \dorecurse is active in the following MWE, the lines of text are overprinted. At least, this is the case for me, please confirm it for yourself. When \dorecurse is disabled, the lines print as they should, separately. Please tell me what I am doing wrong with this, if anything, and how to fix it. \setupinteraction[focus=standard] not working

Dear List, First of all: Thank you Hans and folks for supporting focus=standard for many things. There are, however, some major places where focus=standard does not work correctly yet. I pick out the simplest and in my opinion most severe one: Floats. \setupexternalfigures[location={local,global,default}] \setupinteraction[state=start, focus=standard] \starttext \about[figure]. \page \placefigure[][figure]{Figure}{\externalfigure[cow.pdf]} \page \input tufte \stoptext The link text on page 1 in the resulting PDF correctly displays "Figure" and the overlayed PDF annotation has a seemingly correct destination "(figure)". But, in the PDF catalog's "Names"-tree the only named destination present has the name "(#1)". This destination points to the correct location on the correct page, it is only the name that should read "(figure)" instead of "(#1)". Please consider fixing at least this issue (even if you are not very fond of focus=standard ;-), as it will be of tremendous value for many users. If I can be of any help, then please let me know. Using Asymptote in ConTeXt

Dear ConTeXt users, presently I try to use asymptote to render a graphic in a ConTeXt document using the module filter. I have found some suggestions on this mailing list how this can be done: https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2015/080581.html <https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2015/080581.html> I replaced the asymptote code with my own one and everything works fine. But if I use LaTeX together with the asymptote package I get an interactive 3D graphic (if I open the output with Adobe Acrobat). To do this I compile my attached file LuaLaTeX-asymptote.tex and then I compile the asymptote code via the command asy LuaLaTeX-asymptote-*.asy in the console. If I compile the LaTeX document again the result is the attached pdf LuaLaTeX-asymptote.pdf that contains the interactive graphic. Can I achieve the same using ConTeXt if I modify the attached code example I used? What do I have to modify? Best regards Mathias Schickel

Vertical space around displayed formulas

Hello, has something been changed in the last few months in the vertical spacing of displayed formulas, frames or other environments? I am re-typesetting some presentations using the latest beta and the content of slides (especially those containing formulas) now tends to flow to the next page, while before it used to fit in one page. I paste below an example, if that helps. I am using a system font, so you may not be able to reproduce my problem without it. Is there something I should change in my documents? But I saw a change the vertical space when I run it under ConTeXt version 2016. 12. 28 MKIV beta after updated the bata. Dear list, please have a look at the output (ctx-example13.pdf) of the somewhat ugly example below. The vertical space before the paragraph with the displayed formula is almost none. If I remove the % signs before and after the formula, the space before the paragraph looks ok. Do I have to enter those empty lines? Is this a bug or feature? scancsv module and lua

But in specific context in which this problem affects me, this solution breaks many things: There are many *MPinclusions with as many MPinstances (so variables from one instance don't contaminate another). (here's that place: https://github.com/jemmybutton/byrne-euclid/blob/master/preamble.tex#L30) If this is indeed a bug and it's going to be fixed one day, I'll go with some less invasive hack to overcome it, but if this behaviour is correct, I'll try to rewrite everything accordingly. Or I got it wrong and *MPinitializations can substitute for *MPinclusions in this case? Sergey

Hi, When using the currently latest version of ConTeXt to include a JPEG image as in the MWE below, the resulting image size in the PDF is half the size when compared with earlier versions. \setupexternalfigures[location={local,global,default}] \starttext \externalfigure[hacker.jpg][scale=1000] \stoptext The actual width (in the PDF) of the hacker.jpg image is: - ConTeXt version 2016.12.28: approx. 44 mm - ConTeXt version 2016.07.01: approx. 88 mm The correct width would be 86.868 mm (513 pixel / 150 DPI * 25.4). The single figure, on the other hand, is shoved correctly to the right and the text is at the left. In earlier versions of ConTeXt, the floatcombination is correctly shoved to the right. The reason for this change could be line 490 of pack-com.mkiv (in the definition of \pack_combinations_start_float). If I delete \dontleavehmode from this line then the correct layout is restored. Since I don't want to maintain my own version of ConTeXt, I very much would appreciate If anyone could tell me how to get the correct layout back, or fix this issue in ConTeXt. Hi, I'm trying to get rid of some vertical space below the caption of combinations. In the example below I want to have no space under the captions (i.e. the frame should almost touch the captions). I thought that height=fit would do this, but no luck. Result is attached. Dear context users: In latex I could make professional looking tables using booktabs module. Using longtable package I could make nice looking multipage tables. I see that context offers several table environments. Which one of them is suitable for making professional (publication quality) tables? The requirements for such tables are the follows: - Only horizontal rules are needed - Ability to set the rule's thickness for top rule, bottom rule, middle rule - Ability to set the distance between rules and table content - Ability to set rule length shorter than cell or row width on both left and right sides - Ability to set rules for spanning only some of the columns In addition, for multipage tables: - head row at the start of table - head rows at top on every page (possibly including first page) - foot row ate the end of table - foot rows at the end of every page (possibly including last page) Is this feasible in current context? Dear all, I'm struggling with the column environments these days. The code below runs fine, but there are some problems with the result. 1) There is an extra blank line at the top of the left column. I can get rid of it with a \vskip-\baselineksip (commented out in the example) but that feels like a hack. Does anyone see why it is there from the beginning? 2) Why is the frame something like 3 lines down from the top of the page? Hi! Im curious how to get back to the grid after a displayed formula? I try \setuplayout[grid=yes] \showgrid \setupformulas[align=middle] \starttext \input knuth \startformula a^2+b^2=c^2 \stopformula \input knuth \stoptext (where the \setupformulas[align=middle] was suggested in a comment at http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/254815/grid-on-aligned-equations-in-… , but that makes no difference) but that does not work (result attached). Would it be easier if there were also an option saying how many lines the equation should take? Say, \startformula[lines=3] a^2+b^2=c^2 \stopformula and then centering the formula (or having options for that) vertically over the three lines? Maybe that is a not a good idea for some reason... /Mikael

\copypages and page numbering

Dear all, I’m assembling into a unique pdf the proceedings of a conference. They have been created by various sw (latex, word, writer etc). In order to include the papers, I’m just using a series of commands like \copypages[CIMXXI_contributi/dapelo][][scale=950] They are not provided with page numbers, and I’m including them in the usual way. Now, most of the time it just works. All the papers should conform to a template, but in some cases, page numbers are not displayed, and this depends on the fact that the page setup in that paper has a greater height (or maybe a different crop area), so that it covers the page number. I would simply solve the problem by having the page number on top of the imported pdf. Is it possible? However, in the situation I was using the command to produce a document, I would need to crop some parts of a figure. I should have been a little bit more clear on this, I guess. Different column modes and NAW

Dear list, I just realized that the very nice articles in "Nieuw archief voor Wiskunde" (see http://www.nieuwarchief.nl/serie5/index.php?deel=17&nummer=4&taal=1 ) are typeset with ConTeXt (at least it says so at http://www.nieuwarchief.nl/homeitems.php?onderwerp=2&taal=1) I get curious. Does anyone here know what column mode (i.e. \startcolumn \stopcolumn, \startmixedcolumn\stopmixedcolumn, columnsets or even the new module newcolumnsets?) they use, and how they get mathematics to play with it without breaking the grid? Also, if I start to write a new document with two columns today (it will contain lots of images and lots of formulas and enumerations), which column mode is the preferred one? Is there any documentation (except the source) for the newcolumnsets? I want to be able to have images span both columns and it would be nice if it played well with sections as well.
