Hi, For those using synctex, an alternative method is: \setupsynctex[state=start] It is tuned for use in a more complex setup where one wants access to source files (with content) and not to e.g. styles in a tex tree. It also works reasonable well with (also included) xml files. Personally I never use synctex but for some projects it came in handy for authors (think of proofing xml files with hundreds of nested inclusions and files in a rather branched tree.) Of course you can expect a similar performance hit as normal synctex but commenting the above line in production results in zero overhead. Using the syntex flag on the command line (--synctex=context will work) can be messy. This currently only works with the windows binaries version on the garden (as we need luatex 1.0.5). fixed spacing

dear List, I try to put a set of numbers into a block text. I want to keep the spacing within the items fixed x-y:~z, How do i do that? The attached code does not seem to treat the fixed space as fixed. \xmlfirst broken?

Dear list, A recent question on TeX.SX is asking about XML processing. https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/380935 To reproduce the error from the question I copied the demo from the XML manual. Error with Libertinus Semibold and new standalone beta

I have been trying to use the newest generic font loader (luatex-fonts-merged.lua) in the context minimals with luaotfload in latex. This mostly worked with one exception: luaotfload-letterspace.lua reference a value that no longer exists: "...mf-dist/tex/luatex/luaotfload/luaotfload-letterspace.lua:73: attempt to index local 'nodepool' (a nil value)". luaotfload does local nodedirect = nodes.nuts local nodepool = nodedirect.pool local new_kern = nodepool.kern and uses new_kern here local kern_injector = function (fillup, kern) if fillup then local g = new_glue(kern) local s = getfield(g, "spec") setfield(s, "stretch", kern) setfield(s, "stretch_order", 1) return g end return new_kern(kern) end The error goes away when I add this to the fontloader (from an older version): nuts.new=direct.new -- new UF nuts.pool={} function nuts.pool.kern(k) local n=nuts.new("kern",1) setfield(n,"kern",k) return n end -- end UF nuts.getprop=nuts.getattr But I would prefer to change luaotfload-letterspace.lua to use whatever should be used to get the correct effect. +ssty leads to wrong parentheses with stix2math fonts.

The following is a context adaption of this tex.SX question: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/380262/left-right-problem-with-stix… The problem is that with the stix 2 math fonts, parentheses don't grow in a font with active +ssty feature when using luatex with the context based fontloader. (With xelatex everything is fine, harfbuzz seems to do it as wanted). Below are two examples: One a mix of plain and context, and one with a (shortened) typescript definition from a posting some weeks ago. In both cases the parenthese in the second exponent is too small (I attach an image, but don't know if it will come through). Imho the source of the problem is that the font contains parenleft.ssty, parenright.ssty, parenleft.ssty2 and parenright.ssty2 glyphs and these "wins" when the fontloader is looking for variants. The glyphs are *not* in the vvariants-list of the parentheses. Other delimiters are not affected. confusing columns balancing results

whitespace between endnotes

\placenotes[endnote] puts a list of endnotes spaced out with the setting of \setupwhitespace. Is there a means to keep \setupwhitespace undisturbed but changing this for the endnotes alone? Some parameter to be specified in \setupnote, \setupnotation or one of its friends perhaps? Hans van der Meer

Dear list, I am compiling some figures as supplementary material and would like to have figure captions follow the convention: Figure S3 Figure S4 Figure S5 ... and I need that the numbering starts with S3 instead of S1. How can I achieve this? No cross-references in scrollmode

Hello, when I pipe a file to context, it cannot resolve references, e. g. to figures or chapters: cat source.tex | context --pipe Instead of the number, "??" is printed in the PDF document. Dear Hans, I updated ConTeXt beta today and run your sample for long formula. It works nice and it is the feature what many math people want I think. Thank you for your concern. One thing that I’d like say is that a new line in the splitted long formula usually starts with operations in many math books. But, in the ourput of your example, every line ends with ‘+’ sign and begin a new line with a ‘number’. Would you please check it once more? Thank you again for your work, and have a nice weekend. a string xmlpath in Lua

Hello list, is there a Lua function to get the XML path of an element as a string? \xmlpath typesets the path, I need a similar function for Lua, but the path should be a string to be worked on in Lua. This is the problem originating that question: i must name (give an id to) some anonymous XML elements (read: "without an id attribute"), and their path is a good candidate. To be more precise: when i parse a <table> element, i look for elements representing footnotes, to prepare them with \setnotetext; then the table contents are parsed and the footnotes' markers are typeset with \note[footnote_id]. When there are more footnotes, i need to identify them, to give \note the right footnote id. Thanks, Massi

A very simpleminded question, if I may. What do the keywords, check and force do in \definefallbackfamily? Am I right to think that check=yes, force=no will use the fallback font only when characters are missing from the mainfont and check=no, force=yes will use the fallback font whenever it contains a character found in the source file? Problem with columns and footnotes

Dear list, motivated by a question on TeX.SX I wanted to typeset multicolumn text with multicolumn footnotes. However, on the first page the distance between the columns and the footnote area is way too large. Occurs in TL2017 and latest beta. Also, is there something to influence the alignment inside the footnotes more aggressively. There are a couple of bad boxes. Is it possible to turn of balancing for the footnote columns? Adjusting column width dynamically to get rid of orphans and widows

Hello, I recently started experimenting with using ConTeXt (mkiv) for dictionary typesetting. It's a much more attractive option than plain TeX or LaTeX because of the support for typesetting on a grid. However, grid typesetting can easily result in a large number of orphans and widows, which really doesn't look good in a dictionary. In an ideal world, I'd want to alter the column width slightly to prevent them (because most dictionaries aren't justified, this wouldn't be very noticeable). Would it be possible to use LuaTeX to achieve this? I.e., could one write some code that gets triggered by orphans and widows and then alters the current column width slightly until the problem disappears? Has somebody already done this? Or have the relevant TeX internals not been Luafied yet? I'd also be interested in other ways to solve this issue – for instance changing the looseness dynamically instead of the column width. mathalignment and grid

Dear Hans, In a previous email I complained that with mathalignment large formulas crash into the paragraph below when using grid typesetting. This has been fixed in the latest beta but now the space above and below is asymmetric. For this particular case I could fix it by setting the gird snapping mode to "top" rather than "math", but this does not apply universally. Any chance there is an easy fix? Hi, I wonder what is going on in the example given below (resulting pdf attached)? The placement of the figures in floatcombination (this does not happen if I place them one by one in a figure) are shifted horizontally, and seems to depend on the boundingbox. Am I doing something wrong? Problem with lucida fonts (again)

Hello I already had this problem with lucida fonts. When I type text the letter are shifted : "b" becomes "a", "c" becomes "b", ... I solved it with using the stable version. I updated my system and I downloaded again context-minimal. The problem came back with both versions (last or stable). Problem with macro with optional parameter

Hello ConTeXist. I'm not able to solve a macros problem with one optional argument. I need the macro to return a value that can be used as a dorecurse loop parameter. Is there possibility create macro with optional parameter and parameter is concurrently inside in braces? (in nonsquare brackets)? Hello list, there's a bug in the way ConTeXt groups the items of a register when "indicator=yes" and mainlanguage is "it": - items starting with the J letter are grouped under the I letter - items starting with the V letter are grouped under the U letter This is not what one would expect from an index in modern italian. If you browse an italian dictionary, you will find all the 26 letters. Hi, In recent versions of ConTeXt/luatex, I observe the following log entry: Syntax Error (77727): Unknown filter 'DCTDecode' This happens if the document includes JPEG images, e.g: \starttext \externalfigure[hacker.jpg] \stoptext The output PDF looks, however, fine. Dear Context’ers, I am trying to use the letter module in mkiv for typesetting serial letters from an xml database. Thanks, Thomas for looking into this. I appreciate it very much. Yet I don’t know either whether I actually need the letter module, but it seemed reasonable to try this first. Today I tried to insert some simple luatex code which I found on another forum. The results are promising: a. The address appears. b. The salutation + formalname also appear. Yet there are some problems: 1. the address elements appear in one line, not underneath as desired, 2. When I add text such as Knuth or references to the database, Context stops. See the code below. My question at this point is: how can I proceed? Do I actually need the letter module? Using [compress=all] for registers yields somewhat puzzling results (1.0.4 (TeX Live 2017)). I would expect the register of the following code to become one single range "1--7", though context produces "1--2, 3--7". Is this the expected behaviour? And if so: is there another switch to get the ranges to be collapsed completely? Also: There wouldn't be a shorthand to define explicit ranges? LaTeX has \index{Demorange|(} to \index{Demorange|)} which is actually very convenient. The trouble : the big parenthesis were not big, $($ and $\bigl($ gave the same shape The fix : I defined my own environment in which I defined very big font sizes. \definefontsize[e] \definebodyfontenvironment [default] [e=4] One of them was \definefontsize[g] I changed it to \definefontsize[gg] and all went right again The explanation (?) : maybe \big was read \bi (bold italic) with size g ???? Hi Thomas, Thanks for your advice. I would like to have a system with which I can send letters to people in my database. It would be nice to be able to make selections according to labels (probably with xmlatt), but that can be done later. I am not a programmer - when I read the documentation, I do not understand enough of it to the extent to port it to a new program, but I can adapt and try existing code. Hello all, I have been using Context mkii with the x-corres.mkii module for a number of years now, for many different purposes (mailings, certificates, etc). The module works with an xml (actually rng) file with the following structure: <contacts> <contact label=“pietjanssen"> <formalname>Janssen</formalname> <informalname>Piet</informalname> </contact> </contacts> The contents of each item is grabbed and put in the document by means of the command \XMLflush{formalname}. I would like to shift to mkiv now with all its possibilities. Yet there is no x-corres.mkiv. Who can help me out? Regards, Robert

Footnotes in paragraph form + annotating them in margin

Dear list, in my document I have several kinds of footnotes including footnotes in paragraph form. In some cases I need to annotate these. The annotation should to appear in the outer margin of the page and in line with the annotated footnote. I tried a few different approaches, but none yields exactly the result I want to obtain: 1. I defined a seperate footnote type for the annotations according to the wiki, but the annotations are centered in the margin and not in line with the footnote(s) they refer to. 2. As suggested on the mailinglist some time ago, I tested \myCustomFootnote{Text.\margintext[scope=local]{Annotation.}} but since I have \definenote[myCustomNote][paragraph=yes], no text in the margin is displayed unless I delete this parameter (which unfortunately is no option for my document layout). Character translation with Luaotfload

Since Luaotfload is extracted from ConTeXt, I figure people here will know this: In the code below, math mode '.' and ',' are translated into ':'and ';', which seems to occur because that is what ASCII/Unicode has in those positions, unlike CMMI. So how to correct this? The issue is really trying to find get texinfo.tex working with Unicode fonts using LuaTeX, as it probably does not work with ConTeXt. Position of standard footnotes that are set-up in floats

Hello together, I have the following example: I place a simple float (a graphic) in the text within \startplacefigure...\stopplacefigure and create a footnote with the graphic's source, that I want to be placed as simple footnote at the bottom of the page. CTX, LuaTX do this just fine. But when the float is being set on the next page, due to spacing, then the footnote remains on the initial page, i.e. the footnote stays on page 1, whereas the float with its description text and the footnote marker are set on page 2. Is it possible to make the footnote's location depend on the location of the float, rather than where the last text passage was before the float? Bug regarding placement and size of primes

Dear Hans, the newest beta (I have updated some hours ago) contains again some bugs regarding the size and placement of primes. You can verify that by using the following minimal example (created to show some older bugs being resolved meanwhile): %%%%%%% \starttext % Compare $f'$ to $(f')$ and to $f''$, $(f'')$, $f^{''}$ and $(f^{''})$. % \startformula % \int\nolimits_a^b \bigl(\|f(x)\|\bigr)\, {\mathrm d}x % \stopformula % \stoptext %%%%%%% The output is attached. The primes are obviously rendered too small. And while $f'$ seems to lead to a placement of the prime a little too low, $f^{'}$ seems to cause the prime being placed too high. Best Mathias

Typesetting all documents in a project

Hello all, I'm setting up a new project structure, and having trouble when I typeset the project file in TeXShop with engine ConTeXt (LuaTeX). The console report includes... close source > level 2, order 7, name '/Users/mhoc/Documents/projects/histories/history-earlyMidWest/proj-git/context/project_guide.tex' system > invalid \starttext ... \stoptext structure and further down... mkiv lua stats > result saved in file: project_guide.pdf, compresslevel 3, objectcompresslevel 3 The claimed output “project_guide.pdf” does not materialise (nor should it). Instead I hoped typesetting "project_guide.tex" would create a PDF of each product mentioned i.e. "prd_guide" in this case ; a way of generating in one action all outputs for a project. I have a very long table (landscape) with local footnotes that I wish to split over two pages so that (a) the table is on a verso page and (b) the notes on the next recto page. Any suggestions about how to do this will be gratefully received. Position of prime for derivatives

Hi Hans, Thanks for having fixed the behavior of the prime in the latest beta release (ConTeXt version 2017.05.15 21:48). However, as you may see in the two attached PDF files, the result is still incorrect when one types for example $f_2’’(x)$, which should give the same result as $f’’_2(x)$. The correct behaviour is that obtained with mkii. Indeed one can circumvent the behaviour of the latest beta release of mkiv by using tricks such as the ones in the example code below, but this should be avoided in my opinion. The following PDF have been obtained with mkii and mkiv with the following example code. Misnamed parameter in \setuppagenumbering?

Dear list, On TeX.SX there was a question about why ConTeXt starts the document with a left instead of a right page. Turns out the OP merely confused "marginedge" with "inmargin". However, that made me wonder, is "marginedge" perhaps misnamed when it does not place the pagenumber in the margin close to the edge of the page? I think it should be named "marginspine" instead. I mean, with a three line source, it is stupid to get this. But in a longer file, it can be an exhausting task. The scenario may be worse. At work I have a system to generate some documents (mainly letters) automatically. I have to add an option (which I didn’t find the time to fully implement it). The system uses ConTeXt and there are about 30 source files. Depending on the options you need, the main file requires the other files (via modes and \input commands). Well, in this context (no pun intended), I get an error such as this: open source > level 3, order 4, name 'untitled.tex' But the source isn’t closed. I don’t have the files here, but I don’t know even how to start searching. In this second case, how could I get a hint of what is ConTeXt expecting? mathradical defaults to "normal", should it perhaps be "default"?

Hi, this might be a matter of taste. look at the output of (attached). In my opinion the first square root is to "high", while it looks better on the second line. From setup-en.pdf it looks like the default of \setupmathradical is set to normal (and not default). I don't understand what normal should mean, but I think the alternative=default looks better. Strange interaction between mathalignment and mathmatrix

Hi, is it possible to align the inner itemgroup vertically with the outer enumeration, even if there is a "big" math expression? See the example below (where I have made the enumeration serried, just to see the _vertical_ misalignment better)? Now that the bug with primes is fixed in ConTeXt, I wonder if there is a way to change the kerning between certain characters in mathematics (in case one is not happy with the output from the font)? Hans, I have a document http://tex.ousia.tk/hippocratic-oath.pdf (source as attachment to the PDF document itself). The special kind of notes are the first group in two columns. I need that their space and location in page are calculated by the notes mechanism. And also that the notes mechanism selects the range of notes that belong to the page. I don’t need any reference, not to note number or to line number. Since it is a vocabulary list, what I need is a minimal register with "indicator=no, before=, after=". So it would be possible to have well-balanced columns and words alphabetically sorted, which is essential in a vocabulary. I guess that \definenote[NAME][alternative=register] and \setupregister[NAME][indicator=no, before=, after=] could be a good way to invoke these page-related vocabularies. mathmatrix and grid: followup

Dear list, some time ago I asked about the interplay of mathmatix with grid typesetting: https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2016/087018.html I noticed that when the grid is enabled, the height of a mathmatrix is rounded down which leaves less space above than below. In my opinion either the height should be rounded up or the depth rounded down here. In the original thread Wolfgang proposed using \setupformula[grid=tolerant] and adding a blank line before the formula (otherwise grid=tolerant is applied to the paragraph before). This workaround leads to the depth being rounded down in the example below which produces a more balanced output. Could this somehow be made the default behaviour or something? Currently it requires the user to notice that vertical spacing is off and correct it manually, including adding a blank line before the formula to prevent grid=tolerant being applied to the paragraph. Hi Hans, I recall something like this was reported a few months back, and you said you were reworking math alignment mechanisms at the time. Now that you're getting ready for the Tex Live version, I want to bring attention to this issue once again, in the hope of getting it resolved. Formula numbers are not placed at the far end when in RTL. Here is a MWE: \starttext \input knuth \placeformula \startformula E = mc^2. \stopformula \righttoleft \placeformula \startformula E = mc^2. \stopformula \stoptext Attached is the result from context version 2017.05.14 19:09. Using \setupformula[location=left] gives similar results with directions swapped: output is as desired in LTR but slightly off the edge in RTL. Thanks, MHB

issue with annotation flags

Acrobat displays the annotation flag set to NoZom. The developers assume that 4 is actually the decimal conversion for a binary number (100, actually bit position 3). So it prints the annotation border in the sample above. It took me a while to understand this (math is all Greek to me). Is there a way that I can set the annotation flag in the sample above to Print (/F 3)? (This would be unambiguous, since only a bit can be set [11 would be an invalid flag value].) Or am I missing something and Acrobat is misbehaving? Sorry for such a weird request, but bug reporting has become extremely complex these days ;-). Placing of integral limits

Dear list, I think that the placement of the indices of integrals has some issues, at least in some fonts. If you try \setupbodyfont[cambria] % \starttext % \startformula % \int\nolimits_a^b f % \stopformula % \stoptext or if you replace Cambria by Stix Two using \setupbodyfont[stixtwo], you will notice that the index a is placed a little too far away form the integral sign. The reference is the „exponent“ b and the Word output. I think the Word output should be the reference here because the font design of Cambria is done by Microsoft and Word supports the font as intended. Apart form that you see the very same effect using Latin Modern and this font should look similar to Computer Modern in LaTeX. Best regards Mathias

\start pagefigure not working as expected

Hi guys, I created a CTX document and now I am trying to merge it with two other pages from another (already compiled) pdf document. Usually I did this job with PDF Split And Merge software, but if CTX (mkiv, LuaTeX) is capable of doing the job, I'd be glad to use CTX instead. On the wiki I found a code snippet that sounds promising, as I don't want headers, page numbers etc. on the two merged pages: \startpagefigure[file.pdf][page=1]\stoppagefigure So I added another line with page=2 as content, yet the output generates a PDF with the *first page twice* only. In fact, my precompiled doc has 3 pages, of which I want the first two only in my new PDF, even when I use the following code, LuaTeX generates the first page of the precompiled PDF *three times*: \startpagefigure[file.pdf][page=3]\stoppagefigure \startpagefigure[file.pdf][page=1]\stoppagefigure \startpagefigure[file.pdf][page=5]\stoppagefigure Like I mentioned: even although there is no 5th page in file.pdf, LuaTeX pastes the first page three times... Dear list, some time ago, Hans implemented signature fields: \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext \definefield[x][signature] \field[x] \stoptext I’m afraid I’m not able to sign it using Acrobat 9.5.5, which is the latest version released for Linux. Acrobat Reader 9.5.5 is able to sign this document: https://bugs.ghostscript.com/attachment.cgi?id=11678 (and https://bugs.ghostscript.com/attachment.cgi?id=11707) I guess it may not be the cause, but which is the way to force the document to be written in PDF version 1.6? setupitemgroup and 'command='

Hi, I used to use the “command=” parameter when setting up itemize. Now I noticed that it introduces a spurious horizontal whitespace after the item symbol when the item is of type “\sym{}”. I also noticed that the problem goes away if I use “inner=” instead of “command=”. Example: \setuppapersize [A6] \starttext \start \setupitemize [each][command={\setupwhitespace[none]}] With \type{\command=} \startitemize \item \dorecurse{20}{bla } \sym{Y} \dorecurse{20}{bla } \stopitemize \stop \setupitemize [each][inner={\setupwhitespace[none]}] With \type{\inner=} \startitemize \item \dorecurse{20}{bla } \sym{Y} \dorecurse{20}{bla } \stopitemize \stoptext This is with ConTeXt 2017.05.15 21:48. With an older ConTeXt, for example 2015.01.13 15:54, “inner=” and “command=” deliver identical, correct results. So, I’m asking, has “command=” been deprecated or is it just a bug?
