Wiki in Mobile(?) format

Hi, since a few weeks I have the problem that I get the mobile(?) view for the wiki, when I open a "wiki.contextgarden.net" link. However, the mobile view is not feature complete (colors and renderings are missing). This only happens in Qutebrowser (maybe it sets a header wrong). Since the mobile view seems to be incomplete, is it possible to deactivate it completely? This is fixed when I open a www.contextgarden.net link. Can LMTX help me with this PDF manipulation?

I have a large PDF with mostly vector and a bit of pixel graphics. It is in two colours only (the pixels are either one colour or the other, no dithering). I want to create a new PDF of a segment of the larger PDF (bottom left corner), where vector is maximally preserved, and where one colour is replaced by 100% transparency. How to hide any content?

I have a strange issue with some macros that are creating extraspaces between paragraphs. Note these macros shouldn’t create anycontent, as they define content that will be sent to registers andcontent that is used for page references. Its more like invisibledata, perhaps the word is “metadata” and other parts of thedocument need to know it and refer to it, but nothing should berendered there. As best as I canunderstand, when ConTeXt sees one of these macros, it creates avertical space after the paragraph, draws nothing, then createsanother vertical space after that, before drawing the next paragraph,so the result is something close to three lines of space. Whenappearing after a section title, its also as if there is an emptyline, then blank space, then the first paragraph of content appears. Sample of what the rendered document looks like: ----- Section Title .<--if the macro is placed here, a huge empty space after thesection title is there .<-- I’m using these dots to represent empty lines Loremipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmodtempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. How can I force ConTeXt to display my footnote on the same page as my foot note marker?

correcting Wikipedia

Dear list, just by accident, I discovered that the English Wikipedia had attributed ConTeXt to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Hagen (a German computer science professor). I corrected this info and also removed the internal links to that article that belong to “our” Hans (Hagen). Just in case the wording may be improved, I wrote (reprashing a previous sentence and adding two links to pages with photo): (Prof. Dr.) Hans Hagen is not to be confused with Hans Hagen, the author of the ConTeXt macro package for the TeX typesetting system.[5] [5] ConTeXt’s author comes from the Netherlands (he is a digital typographer, no academic). About a pagination

The first screenshot has its items neatly stacked and is made with \startsimplecolumns[n=2] \placenotes[endnote] \stopsimplecolumns The second screenshot has its items wide apart and is made with \startcolumns[n=2,blank=1pt] \placenotes[endnote] \stopcolumns Question: how do I get rid of the interline space in the last case. Install urbanist fonts

Hello, I was trying to install the urbanist fonts (https://github.com/coreyhu/Urbanist) but I couldn't get it to load and save the fonts in the system folder and in the ConTeXt folder without success, I could only get it to load when saving them in the current working directory but that is annoying, help me by telling me the correct way to install it... Hi wizards, I’d really appreciate an introduction “how to write a ConTeXt module” at the meeting and in the next journal. * How does this namespace and setup stuff work? * When does it make sense to use variables, macros or parameters? * Should I use the namespace for internally used MP graphics, environments, buffers etc.? I guess I can figure out most of it on my own, but I think we should have some easily understandable documentation. Or do we already have something and I didn’t find it? Hi, I checked the spreadsheet module for the first time (in my own invoices I do everything in Lua and don’t need it). In the attached example, I setup a decimal comma, as usual in German: \setupspreadsheet[rechnung][ period={,}, comma={\,}, split=yes] Unfortunately, this also replaces all dots in the text strings. Is there a workaround (beside using \getspr in a “real” table)? Apparently, \startrow or \startcell don’t understand the period setting. Hraban

Hi, is there some mechanism (directive?) that gives me a list of files that were involved in making a PDF? Preferably only those outside of the texmf trees, but I could filter that myself. (With "latexmk -recorder somelatexfile" I get the file list as a .fls file.) My goal is to commit all used images to my git repo, while I often have a big collection of images that I didn’t use in the end and don’t need in the repo. Hraban

Hi list! I have a three-part question. First, when using \placeinitial, how would you detect whether the first character is a quotation mark, and, if so, override the setupinitial to use m=2? Second, when using m=2 to capture a quotation mark, how would you change the font size of only the quotation mark, leaving the font size for the remaining characters the same? Third, can this be accomplished using setupinitial alone? Hello, I need advice on blanks at the start of a page. Usually a blank is ignored when it's at the top of a page. You can force it with \blank[...,force], but its value is the same as in the remainder of the text. So, if the blank over a heading is 2 lines, forcing it at the top of the page produces 2 empty lines (not exactly, because TeX uses a glue at the top for line alignment, if I remember well). What I need is a non zero blank at the top, to align the following text to the grid. A solution could be checking whether we are at the top of the page, and choose the blank amount accordingly. Hi, I checked the German index sorting rules, and as far as I can tell, all of them are somewhat wrong. – de, default, or no setting (just mainlanguage de) – Duden - DIN 5007-1(:2005) - DIN 5007-2(:1996) - de-AT IMO, "Duden" is obsolete, should be the same as default; it makes no sense to have a default setting that doesn’t adhere to the official rules. If Û#m not mistaken it’s also the same as DIN 5007-1; maybe there was a difference before 2005. (DIN 5007-2 and de-AT have their uses.) The order of umlauts etc. should be ok. [ß] In tex/context/base/mkiv/sort-lan.lua, ß is replaced by s, while it should be sorted like ss in default and both DIN versions. (de-AT sorts ss after ß.) [upper-/lowercase] While casing is not mentioned in Wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphabetische_Sortierung) Duden „Satz und Korrektur“ says: Uppercase characters get sorted the same as lowercase (i.e. mixed), but if both appear, lowercase comes first. ATM all German settings sort lowercase behind uppercase. Generally, default method seems to be not "default" but "before". Does this make sense? Perhaps someone can advise me where I am going wrong. Dear list, investigating the issue of why Acrobat Reader DC doesn’t recognize ConTeXt signatures, I related it to another issue. I use Acrobat Reader DC for Windows at work. DC is regularly updated. Since a year ago or so, if I open a PDF document (opening Acrobat with the document) and double-click (sometimes, it may be triple-click) too fast on a link or a signature field (either to be signed or already signed), Acrobat Reader crashes. I have tested sample documents on other computers and with other people and everybody told me Reader crashed. BTW, the document structure is perfectly fine (according to the Arlington PDF model from the PDF specification). I thought Acrobat Reader DC changed something and this was buggy. I have been consistently experiencing this issue for about a year, so I took for granted it was a common bug. I experienced the crash only with the Spanish version (the one installed on all tested computers). Although I sometimes I load the English version by pressing Ctrl when starting Acrobat, right now I cannot say whether I experienced the crash with the English version loaded. But this seemed to be not enough, since I have just found out that Acrobat Reader for Windows and macOS with the US English version may not crash (I was told). The sample document contains only a link. I’m affraid I cannot tell yet what may be triggering the crash, but I view PDF in Windows with SumatraPDF. When I open them with Acrobat and click on any kind of link too fast, I get back to SumatraPDF (since Acrobat crashed and dissapeared). Draft vertical text in margins

Hello list, I'd like to place the text "DRAFT" in the left and right side margins of every page, rotated 90 degrees so that the text runs vertically. It would be nice if the text was 180 degrees rotated on the right side in comparison to the left margin. I've tried with overlays and I can't seem to get them to work correctly. Something that has worked for me in the past is not working for me at the moment, and I cannot figure out why: \startsectionblockenvironment [frontpart] \setupuserpagenumber [numberconversion=romannumerals] \setcounter [userpage] [5] \stopsectionblockenvironment \startsectionblockenvironment [bodypart] \setcounter [userpage] [1] \stopsectionblockenvironment gives me roman numerals in the TOC but not on the frontmatter pages, which are arabic. Inconsistencies with fonts/c2sc feature

Greetings, I have been trying to make font feature sets that allow me to write abbreviations in small caps and corporate entity/product/etc names with small caps replacing regular ones. I have run into an issue where c2sc works as intended on some fonts and not in others. No idea what that's about. Spacing within combinations

Greetings, The attached MWE combines 12 images in a 3 by 4 grid; with horizontal and vertical spacing set by setupcombinations. I have two questions. First, can someone please tell me why the vertical spacing is not applied between the first and second and third and fourth rows? Second, why, If I try, e.g.c 15 images, does ConTeXt complain of a missing left brace. More generally, my mwe failed with an odd number of images, but succeeded with an even number. Thanks. (off-topic) hovering over links in Acrobat Reader

The issue I’m experiencing with Acrobat Reader DC on Windows (automatically updated to latest version) is that when hovering over links, I get different results. The three links are (in order from top to bottom): 1. A link to the embedded document. 2. An external link with its address as text. 3. Another external link without its address as text. Some days (as today [sorry, I don’t have access to Windows now]), hovering over the three links displayed the word "link" (even with Acrobat set to Spanish). Other days, hovering over the first link displays nothing and hovering over the two other links show their actual destination address. This behavior seems so random to me that I‘m not sure I’m not missing anything. Would you be so kind to test the attached document (and the one you may generate from the sample source) hovering over the link frames in Acrobat (ideally DC updated to latest)? At least, I would like to be sure what is going on here. Hovering over links is basic precaution before clicking them. However, this seems only to work for single citations (of one source). I want to also specify the separator but did not get it to run. I have in the past relied on \setpenalties\brokenpenalties{1}{10000}\ to set the penalty for a page break after a hyphen. But with the latest LMTX, when I run the file, I get the error message Error count has to be 1 for \brokenpenalties Any advice on how to fix the file would be most welcome. Alan

Transparency in external PDFs does not work

Hi, I'm using LaTeX-Beamer and TikZ for figure typesetting. With this combination, it is easy to combine Beamer's animation system with TikZ transparency feature. This way, the resulting PDFs contain the full graphic on every page, but parts of it are invisible for a specific page. One of these files is attached as an example. The problem is to embed these PDFs into a ConTeXt document. For example, this MWE seems to not respect transparency (see mwe.pdf): ``` \starttext \externalfigure[fig.pdf][page=1] \stoptext ``` I use Okular/Poppler as PDF viewer. Can I fix this somehow or is it a bug somewhere deeper? Best Gerion

upgrade problem, more info

I should give a little more info on the upgrade problem. My system is Linux (Mint). Context installed at /home/jbf/context/tex/texmf-linux-64/bin/context Current version after upgrade : 2024.06.18 22:04 I tried reinstalling, but same result: error, no format found with name: cont-en, aborting And the simpler fact is that everything worked as normal before I upgraded. I tried deleting texmf-cache, running mtxrun -- generate and context --make but problem still persists. Don't know if it is relevant but after running context --make I see an error line: lua error > lua error on line 18 in file typo-lin.mkxl: But that would seem to be a different error to the 'no format found....' error. Or is it? Julian

I have just upgraded Context to the latest, but am getting the message: mtx-context | warning: no format found, forcing remake (commandline driven) and at the end, mtx-context | error, no format found with name: cont-en, aborting Is there something that did not work properly in the upgrade or have I possibly created the problem somehow? digital signing in ConTeXt

Dear list, the latest version of LMTX can digitally sign PDF documents. It requires OpenSSL installed (since it does the crypto part). I have two issues that I would like to be tested by others. Dear list, thank you for the excellent Math in ConTeXt documentation! Some extensibles are not properly rendered in some viewers after the most recent update. The code below produces a pdf with only a few visible artifacts in Acrobat Reader. E.g. Safari or Preview render them correctly. If I remember correctly extensibles were properly rendered in Acrobat Reader before the update. Hello list, I recently upgraded my distro release to Ubuntu Noble on one of my machines. The ConTeXt packages that were previously for 2021.03.05.20230120 were upgraded to 2023.05.05.20230730. line numbering respecting original lines

When discussing verses or other texts that have distinct line breaking, I need line numbering to adhere to that, even if some lines are too long and need breaking. Is that possible? In my example below the 3rd line is too long and gets line numbers 3 and 4. Same problem with source code examples, i.e. \starttyping with numbering. I thought numbering=file (or \setuplinenumbering[method=file]) would address that, but apparently not. Today I find on my Mac the following alert when browsing wiki.contextgarden.net <http://wiki.contextgarden.net/> Do you want to allow downloads on “wiki.contextgarden.net”? instead of the home page. Since I changed nothing in my system, no preferences changes, no system update, no security settings, this behaviour deviates from the previously prompt loading of the home page. What is happening? Math manual

Hi! Hans just uploaded a new version. I am not writing about the news in that version (although there are some fun things!), but rather to announce that the math manual is finally included. We have been working on and off since 2021 on math and therefore also on this document, and we finally believe that both math and the document are now in a state that should be sufficiently useful and not too confusing. You can find a screen and a paper version: ./tex/texmf-context/doc/context/documents/general/manuals/mathincontext-screen.pdf ./tex/texmf-context/doc/context/documents/general/manuals/mathincontext-paper.pdf The versions are generated from the same tex files, so the content (except for some chapter pages only available in the screen version) should be the same. We hope that this will be useful for all of you who use math in your documents. If you have any questions, find any errors, or miss something, please let us know. We consider the document not to be finished, so there will be updates. Also, we will also at some point include the tex files, but that will have to wait a bit. /Hans and Mikael

Faulty PDF output files after updating to version 2024.06.14

Hi, while trying out the new version of ConTeXt LMTX (2024.06.14 09:18) I encountered some problems related to the PDF output files. First, I tried to print a single page of the excellent new math manual (many thanks to everyone involved in creating it, it’s great for beginners like me and surely for experienced users too), but I noticed that all of the extensibles in the formulas (like the bar in \frac, \sqrt, long integral signs, and probably more) have disappeared. Everything else was printed correctly. After investigating, I found out that Okular on Linux converts the PDF file to PostScript before printing (at least on my system), and I was able to replicate this behavior by converting it manually to PostScript with Poppler (pdftops in.pdf out.ps) or Ghostscript (pdf2ps in.pdf out.ps). Printing from Firefox was not affected for me as it did not convert to PostScript. I was unable to reproduce this with my own documents (created with ConTeXt LMTX 2024.05.31 18:50), so I decided to try this with the new version. And with it, that was indeed reproducible. To ensure that this is the PDF’s fault, I decided to try this on Windows with Adobe Acrobat Reader on a different Computer with another fresh installation of ConTeXt. But it wasn’t any better: Adobe Acrobat Reader displayed two different error messages when trying to scroll through or zoom in on the math manual: 1. “An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem.” 2. “There was an error processing a page. A number is out of range.” Sometimes the first one is shown, sometimes the second one. Additionally, some parts of the manual were blank (they were displayed correctly in Okular, Firefox, and many more viewers), I suspect those who contain extensibles in formulas. Following example leads to the same behaviour: \setuppapersize[S33] % Just to make page smaller \setupbodyfont[modern, 11pt] \starttext Hello. \startformula \frac{a^2 + b^2}{1} = c^2 \stopformula \page Hello. \startformula a^2 + b^2 = c^2 \stopformula \stoptext The first page is empty in Acrobat Reader, whereas it’s displayed correctly in all other PDF viewers I tried. But again, when converting to PostScript, the fraction bar vanishes. The second page is fine. I attached the faulty example.pdf file and some screenshots of it opened in different PDF viewers, and of the math manual. The screenshot of the math manual opened in Acrobat Reader shows that the second half of the page is completely gone. example_pdftops-ps2pdf.pdf is example.pdf converted to PostScript with Poppler and then converted to PDF again with Ghostscript (attaching the PostScript file isn’t possible because of file size). Opened in Okular or other Poppler based viewers you’ll see a dot instead of the fraction bar (which gets infinitely smaller while zooming-in), and openend in Firefox, MuPDF or Acrobat Reader you’ll see a cut off bar. One last thing, for some reason “\italiansqrt” on page 52 of the math manual is converted perfectly fine to PostScript (at least it looks right). The examples work fine. By default weeks begin on Monday. Does anyone know how to specify that weeks begin on Sunday? get measures as dimension in Lua

Hi, when I define a measure on the TeX side, I used to get at the value in Lua with tex.getdim, like: \definemeasure[Bleed][3mm] tex.getdimen("Bleed") But now I get "incorrect dimen name". I need it as a dimension, since I do calculations with other dimensions like "topspace". How should I do this correctly? (I just assume this used to work – the code is old any maybe stuck in an intermediate state where I switched from \newdim to \definemeasure…) Hraban

I don’t know whether it is worth discussing this issue, but I have two questions: Is there any way in which regular wiki contributions may help in removing the accounts or at least all the pages generated with these accounts? Is there any way to fix the display of user contributions (such as mine, https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Special:Contributions/Ousia)? I have just discovered that the problem is to search for contributions in all namespaces (set by default), which triggers the error message: Namespaces with negative values are not supported. If main namespace is selected, everything works fine. I wonder whether it would be possible to set the main namespace as default to search for user contributions. Many thanks for your help, Pablo

There is a LaTeX package called citation-style-language, backed by some software called citeproc-lua. There was previous discussion about potentially integrating the software into Context. Scale content to height of the font, measure font height

Hi, I'd like to scale something (actually a symbol drawn in TikZ) to the exact high of the char 'M'. I found the scale environment for it but struggle to measure the correct font height. I found the "definemeasure/measure/measured" commands but they define a dimension and are not for doing measurements on rendered text. Is there a simple way to get the height a char as a dimension? MWE: ``` \starttext % Is it possible to replace 1cm with a common expression? This is the letter M. \scale[height=1cm]{a} should have the exact same size as M. This should also be true {\tfc with a bigger M. \scale[height=1cm]{a}}. \stoptext ``` Best Gerion

suggestion: two templates for the wiki

Dear Taco and Hraban, trying to improve the XML page from the wiki, I think it would be extremely useful to have two templates for inline code: {{xml|…}}: inline XML highlighted as <xmlcode> for blocks. {{tex|…}}: inline TeX code highlighted as <texcode> for blocks. As for the second, {{cmd|…}} includes a link (not always required) and doesn‘t higlight more than the command itself. Let me know whether I can contribute in any way to this. The I do not understand. I am testing if a dimension set can be checked against the expected value. It looks like 100.0pt is not really 100.0pt. Why? And how can I do this test properly with true as result? \scratchdimen=100pt\relax \iftok{\the\scratchdimen}{100.0pt}true\else false\fi printing \the\scratchdimen results in 100.0pt while \meaning\scratchdimen results in: constant dimension 100.0pt yours sincerely dr. Hey there, I would like to place a list of bibliography according to types (article, book, in proceedings) in my document.
