Hi, I'm trying to setup the path for images using environment variables but calling context.setupexternalfigures does not work for me. Can anyone connect context to R or python?

Hi All, I am very interested in creating pdf documents using Context with calculations done in R or Python and then added into the document. If you were using traditional latex this could be accomplished through R markdown or Sweave- is there any way to connect these to Context? Best, Claire

OpenType optical bounds not working

Hans, I reported this issue some time ago. The new fontloader crashed when the opbd feature was invoked. \enabletrackers[*] gives lua error.

Need help with project: TeX capacity exceeded

Hello, this is my second try to start with context and I can’t even do the first step. I’m planing to convert a large but simple document to context. The document consists of 3 Parts. Each part has several chapters. Thus I started to build a project with three products, see enclosed archive. According to my understanding I should be able to context c_01 to get one chapter context prd_A to get one product context project_ecm to get the whole book. The first two steps lead to circular inclusion and the TeX capacity error. The last step doesn’t load the products and creates no files. I got my information from https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Project_structure and think I adapted them correctly, but obviously I didn’t. I included the log files in case there is something broken with my setup. Greetings Axel

Is there a very plain-ish X between iniLuaTeX and MKIV, plus a tool that does the following: Given an MKIV document, reduce the document to X, especially including a solid deal of dead code and magic elimination? I.e. a tool that leaves a "How it can be done without magic directly in X". There is a tool named (la)texdef. Is there something like contextdef? What is the quickest way to find the definition of a macro (on the command line and/or in Emacs)?

faking smallcaps font with font features and fallbacks

Hello list, i'm trying to add a smallcaps variant to the MyriadPro font, since it does not implement the smcp opentype feature. My strategy: - "transplant" the uppercase letters of the MyriadPro-Regular into the lowercase letters of the same font with a font fallback that scales down the glyphs ("FakeSansCaps" in the following source) - since the scaled down glyphs get also thinner traits, embolden them with a font feature effect ("emboldened" in the following source) to make them consistent with the "real" uppercase letters What is not working: i don't know how to map the uppercase letters to the lowercase range; i tried to specify an offset of -32 in \definefontfallback[FakeSansCaps][SansEmboldened][0x61-0x7a][rscale=.8,force=yes,offset=-32] but it does not work. List, With recent betas, since a fix for tagged elements in tables, underbar processing seems to have changed (or perhaps I just noticed it after that fix). Previously, the following highlight definition worked for both pdf and export outputs: \definehighlight [Term][style={{\underbar}}] With the current betas (2018-10-02 and 2018-10-03) this no longer works for all output formats. I have tried a few variants, and the results are as follows: Using [style={{\underbar}}], the pdf output now shows no underlining, while the html export has the expected underlining. Using [style={\underbar}] or [style=\underbar] or [style=underbar], the pdf output shows the expected underlining, while the html export may show continuous underlining after the first use, and in any case eventually loses all formatting. Font installation help needed!

Hi, I'm currently using ConTeXt version: mtx-context | ConTeXt Process Management 0.60 mtx-context | mtx-context | main context file: /home/verhaag/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/context.mkiv mtx-context | current version: 2013.08.11 20:23 I'd like to use the Advent Pro font, so I downloaded the font and have 7 ttf files available. After looking around for some manual I found: "Integrating TrueType Fonts into ConTEXt" by Thomas A. Schmitz. Immediately I run into problems when trying to run the texfont command. My Linux (ubuntu 14.04) says: The program 'texfont' is currently not installed. I did a standalone installation years ago of this version of ConTeXt, and don't dare to upgrade because I might run into other issues, sorry! Any hints on how to procede installing the Advent Pro font to this version of ConTeXt are very much welcomed! Regards, Gerard --

accessing glyphs in the private area

The font Coelacanth (on CTAN) has glyphs in the private area. Between 2/2017 (luaotfload in texlive 2017) and now the storing and accessing of this glyphs has changed. In the lua of the font of 2017 I find e.g. [62860]={ ["boundingbox"]=165, ["index"]=2622, ["unicode"]=62860, ["width"]=523, and the glyph can be accessed with \Uchar62860 In the current lua I now find [983910]={ ["boundingbox"]=195, ["index"]=2622, ["unicode"]=62860, ["width"]=523, }, and \Uchar62860 not longer works, one has to use \Uchar983910. Is this change intentional? How is one supposed to access such chars? The manual says about \Uchar that it "expands to the associated Unicode character." but this seems no longer to be true. Metafun scaling problem

Hi Hans, hi all, I think, that recent context has a problem with scaling included pdf files. My minimal file: \startMPpage draw externalfigure "cow.pdf" ; \stopMPpage The resulting pdf is, as the original, 97x70.6 mm, all ok. If I try to scale to the original size, i get arithmetic overflow error. \startMPpage draw externalfigure "cow.pdf" xscaled 97mm yscaled 70.6mm ; \stopMPpage Whe i scale it down, the pdf gets really big. \startMPpage draw externalfigure "cow.pdf" xscaled 27.5mm yscaled 20mm ; \stopMPpage results in a pdf with width of 4.938,8 mm and height of 2.612,3 mm. I tested with recent context and luatex under windows 64 and linux-armhf. Greetings Lutz

table making ugly column sizes, how to fix?

Full example at the bottom. I'm making a table. So far so good. Every so often I want to make something like a section header. Regular table rows are like this: \bTR\bTC \eTC\bTC NightShift \eTC\bTC Tension Lines 146 - 150 \eTC\eTR For the section headers, I do this, and they look the way I want: \bTR\bTC 30. \eTC \bTC[nc=2,align=center,style=] \bf{Foo Bar} \eTC\eTR But then the regular lines have ugly line breaks and suddenly the column size of column 3 is squeezed. This shouldn't be, we have the whole page to work with. Which color model shall I use

Hi, I would like to know, how to define colors to have a good printing quality. I am currently producing print materials for a company where all colors were defined for online usage first, so we started with defining RGB colors and then derived CMYK colors. What is the best approach for defining colors in print materials? What color model shall I use? RGB or CMYK? For the background. We have some SVG graphics we use on the website. They are defined in RGB color model. And we use them in the print materials as well. I tend to define RGB colors in my print documents so that the colors of the included SVG files match the defined colors I use elsewhere in the document. Eg. the Corporate-Blue of the Logo (SVG) will match the Blue of the headlines. I could as well define CMYK colors in the document but then I have two different color models in one document and I fear that the colors are printed in different hues. What would you do? TIA juh

Questions and observations on the div html export

List, I have been wrestling with the div.html output produced by the export back end, and have a few questions. On the list, Hans has suggested defining elements with two commands, as: \setelementbackendtag [BlockItem] \setelementnature [BlockItem][display] \setelementbackendtag [InlineItem] \setelementnature [InlineItem][inline] These commands do not appear on the wiki or in i-context.pdf. In i-context.pdf, we find: 1 2 3 \setelementexporttag [...][...][...] OPT 1 NAME 2_export_ nature pdf 3 inline display mixed I have tried this latter command in many variations, and cannot understand just how to use it. For example, both of these: \setelementexporttag[BlockItem][display] \setelementexporttag[BlockItem][export][display] generate divs with class="display", when one wants class="BlockItem". But the pair \setelementbackendtag and \setelementnature works for that. Is there any documentation for any of these commands, beyond the syntax in i-convert for \setelementexporttag? The \startelement command takes one or two arguments. The first is the element name, and is required. What is the intended use of the second argument, a list of key/value pairs? Nothing seems to be passed via the back end to the div.html (or raw.xml) file. Next, the back end generates div elements for both block and inline scopes, while html calls for span elements as inline containers. Defined highlights, which are by nature inline containers, are also translated to divs instead of spans. The generated css does identify the divs with display: block and display: inline as appropriate, but that does not help with tools that work with html. (HTML Tidy, for example, will happily introduce extra whitespace because it inserts a newline before a div that should really be a span.) Finally, what is meant by mixed (with respect to inline and display)? If anyone else has figured out some of this stuff, please send some pointers. -- Rik

List, I am trying to use tables in an export with tagging to support CSS styling for eventual ebook production (with the added hope that cross-references and perhaps indexing someday might be supported). I have run into an odd limitation. It seems that only tagged element may not be present in a table. The primary use is to manage text in sidebars (first or last column, moved by CSS to the correct position, for a two- or three-column one-row table). * When there are three tagged (or more) elements in the table, the table is not present in the resulting html export, nor is much of the document following it, and the file is not well-formed. * When there are two tagged elements in the table, the resulting html export is without part of the document following the table and is not well-formed (even though the table appears complete with the tag divs). * When there is only one tagged element in the table, the resulting html export appears to include the complete document but is still not well-formed. * When there are none, all is well, except that there is nothing to which I can associate the needed CSS. * In all cases, the pdf output is correct, but the pdf is a throw-away when generating html exports. It looks like tagged elements are not currently supported within tables. I had thought of putting the table into a tagged element and using nth-child selectors to apply CSS to cells by column, but that is finicky and it does not offer the flexibility that tagged elements provide. Can anyone suggest another alternative? Example follows. As supplied, no tagged elements are generated and all is well. As you know, every Korean character is composed with “consonant+vowel(+consonant)” type. If consonant and vowel are connected (for example, “호”), then it draws correctly, otherwise (for example, “하”) it draws only consonant. Is there a way to count all the paths in a character(even if it is not connected)? Thank you. tounicode mapping missing for locl-variants

When I compile the following document I see in the output localized variants for the various glyphs. But copy & paste works only for the last line. The first two gives notdef chars. In the pdf e.g. the first glyph has the numbers 2D0E, 2D0F, 2D0D in the three lines but only for the last there is a unicode mapping: <2D0D> <5203>. What can one do to get a mapping also for the other glyphs? Creating flyers with ConTeXt

Hi all, consulting the wiki I found http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-pagedesign… and the command \setuparranging [TRYPTICHON]. So I think that I should be able to make a pdf for a flyer and print it with an online printer. But as I am still very new to ConTeXt, I need a kickstart doing it. Has anybody made a template for a leaflet flyer. In Germany we call it DIN lang afaik, I don't know the English name of the format. But it ends up with six pages (width 99mm/ height 210 mm). TIA juh

MetaFun: nofmultipars wrong?

Dear list, I used to be under the impression that when you wanted a background frame around a piece of text, you'd use a loop over nofmultipars. However, I realized that even when the contained material breaks across pages, the counter remains 1 on the second page. Another issue is that the frame containing the page break has a stray blank line at the end. Is this something that changed recently when switching to the one-pass processing? Dear list, Challanged by a very old TeX.SX question https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/180510 I wanted to calculate all the intersection points between two characters. Therefore I ripped off the \showshape macro to load the outlines from the font and convert them to MetaPost paths. Then I try to find all intersections by cutting the path. It somewhat works but for some reason, in the MWE below two intersection points are missing. I also have the feeling that my implementation is extremely inefficient. I would very much appreciate some hints by the MetaPost experts! Hi all, I'm getting back to using ConTeXt after a couple of years, so I might be missing something obvious... I would like to add an I.D. code to the name of my outputfile, but since this will be used in an automated environment I would like to load the ID-code from the source file. MWE: test.tex \starttext \def\idcode{something} Some text, whatever. \stoptext If I typeset with: context text --result=test-idcode the result is obviously "test-idcode.pdf", but I want to get a file name: "test-something.pdf" Is this possible? Using the source han sans fonts fails

Because of a question on tex.sx I tried to use the source han sans fonts. I installed (in windows 10) the fonts from this zip-file: https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/blob/release/OTF/SourceHanSa… Trying to use them with latex/luaotfload failed with a memory exhausted error while trying to write the lua-file. xml in lua advice ?

xmlstrippednolines

This completely escapes me: \xmlstrippednolines behaves differently for: (1) no embedded nodes - just the node content (2) embedded nodes - outer node encloses node content See the minimal example. For me this works out a disaster, because in the second case the outer node is added, throwing my program completely off track. Questions: Is this the defined behaviour? Then what other means can be used to get the node content and nothing but the node content in both cases? Why does \xmlstrippednolines behaves in this manner? dr. Hans van der Meer

Good day Disclaimer: I am a beginner, and I apologise upfront if there is a simple answer to this question that I should have known. Today I tried to compile an existing .tex file, and I received the following error message: /tex error on line 6 in file /Users/jjc/wrk/ctx/brx-test.pdf: ! String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence/ It's been about 3 weeks since I last experimented with ConTeXt. I am running on MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6, and I have not had an OS update since I last ran ConTeXt. I tried the following: 1) I tried to compile another file, which previously compiled successfully, and I had the same problem. 2) I then created a very simple .tex file (\starttext Hello World \stoptext ), and again I had the same problem. 3) I checked the format of my .tex file in 2 different editors to ensure that it is utf-8. (I normally use MacVim and it is clearly displaying the file format as utf-8 at the bottom of the editor) 4) I updated my ConTeXt installation, restarted my Mac and tried again. The only difference was that some of the output stream was displayed after the error message. 5) I checked the log file for my simple file, but could not find any information to help me. A bit of wiki news

Hi all, At the ConTeXt Group Meeting in Sibřina, we have given quite a lot of thought to the ConTeXt wiki at wiki.contextgarden.net. Main points from those deliberations: * We plan to remove all mkii content from the wiki. Mkiv has been around for a long time now, and the few die-hard mkii users we have left can find their documentation in the old mkii ConTeXt manuals. There is no need any longer to keep all that outdated information in the wiki, especially since it is likely to confuse new users. * Various people already offered to help improve both structure and content of the wiki. Current plans include: rewriting the installation pages, creating a Document Topics overview page, testing the examples, adding a ‘for dummies’ template at the top of typesetting-related pages, and creating new pages with helpful hints for specific font(-families). * The mediawiki software will be updated soon(-ish) to the latest version, and we plan to develop a new theme at the same time. The current theme will probably not work any more after the update anyway. To make all of that go smoothly, a new mailing list has been created for people willing to help make the wiki be (even) better than it is today. Issues with hyphenation with latest beta 2018.09.12

Hello, Typesetting some documents I notice several overfull boxes and having a look to output document it looks that somehow no hyphenation at all is performed (comparing to document produced with previous beta). I use thiese settings linked to hyphenation \setupalign[hanging, lesshyphenation, hz] \language[fr] % french hyphenation \mainlanguage[fr] In some places I use ‘morehyphenation’ align option and still no hyphenation at all. wildcard selection in xmlfilter

There is a difference of behaviour in \xmlfilter between (1) \xmlfilter{#1}{node/command(xmlsetup)} and (2) \xmlfilter{#1}{*/command(xmlsetup)} (3) \xmlfilter{#1}{*/*/command(xmlsetup)} In case (1) the lpath ‘node’ results in processing of the <wildcard> nodes in all child nodes. In case (2) and (3) no more than the corresponding level is searched. Thus there is a difference in behaviour between node and * as an lpath. Very unfortunate for me, because I need to process all nodes regardless of theeir node name, but selected on the basis of an attribute: \xmlfilter{#1}{*[@attribute==“yes”]. The difference in behaviour makes this impossible, because a general proceudre is impossible and doing a search with * and */* and */*/* etc. always will be one level too short, I expect. Estonian language support

I am clear whether Estonian (language code: et) is supported in ConTeXt. According to the manual ("languages-mkiv.pdf"), I should be able to see the installed languages using \showinstalledlanguages. Unfortunately, it does not seem to produce the desired table. However, a scan through the source code shows existence of './texmf-context/tex/context/patterns/mkiv/lang-et.lua' file. It looks like much of the work, such as hyphenation, has been already done. MWE 1: \usemodule[languages-system] \loadinstalledlanguages \showinstalledlanguages MWE 2: \starttext \language[et] \currentlanguage \stoptext I suppose my question is more general: what information does the user need to provide in order for a language to get support in ConTeXt? Printer requires vectorised contour path for cut contour

Hi! I created a non-rectangular shaped document. The printer requires a cut contour in a particular colour, no problem so far. However, he complained about a missing “single continuous closed vectorised contour path”. The one I provided is an area, not a contour path. I created the path as follows: \starttext \startMPcode draw origin -- (50mm, 0mm) -- (60mm, 20mm) -- (10mm, 20mm) -- origin; \stopMPcode \stoptext Any clue how to create such a vectorised contour path? Planned wiki downtime

As a consequence, various context-related sites including wiki.contextgarden.net and modules.contextgarden.net will be down for some as-of-yet undetermined amount of time. xmlchainatt and xmllastatt

I found at best an inconsistency in the xml-mkiv manual and at its worst an omission in the code. I must conclude that \xmllastatt is not delivering the attribute retrieved with \xmlchainatt and that \xmllastatt seems restricted to calls of the \xmlatt family. Tabulate backgroundcolors

Dear list, I'm trying to color the background of “p” cells in tabulate. The MWE below will fail with the error “Undefined control sequence \IMPOSSIBLE” but when I enter scrollmode to finish the run, I get a PDF which looks exactly as intended. Looks like it's not \IMPOSSIBLE after all but there is actually just a definition missing. Can you please fix this? Attempt to call a nil value

Hello list, since one of the last beta updates (now I have 2018.09.01) I can't use ConTeXt on my Win 10 32bit tablet anymore. I can't make PDFs because I get an error message. In fact, with CTX in my system path of course, even when I type the following into my command prompt, I get the same error: mtxrun --script context ./context.lua:11: attempt to call a nil value (method 'add_rule') This could have to do with the last adaption to Textadept 10. Mij font setup is nothing more then \setupbodyfont[cambria,12pt] An underfull hbox I can understand but wherefrom these messages about an “unknown library normal”? I guess it is not the font, because substituting lmodern for cambria makes no difference. Does this signify I should change something? If so, then what? Hello, due to great TextAdept (TA) [1] extendibility, I'd like to try to program a TA add-on which would provide a ConTeXt source "browser". The idea is to create an independent window in the TA which will show the current document structure, or even the project structure, and provide some click-in-browser-go-to-source functionality. Suppose having a source file with the following content (line numbers in (...) just for referring): ---- a.tex (1) \section{Sec} (2) (3) Hello (4) (5) \subsection{Subsec} (6) (7) Word ---- The "browser" should display this: ---- Sec (section) Subsec (subsection) ---- After some investigation and some questioning in TA mailing list, it seem that "tatoolbar" [2] might bu useful for this purpose. Unfortunately, there is an initial problem: the tatoolbar is not pre-compiled for Windows [3] and compilation under Windows is not so easy (I tried with GnuWin32 and MinGW installed on my WinX computer); getting Win bins is done by cross compiling under Linux. Is there someone here - who is familiar with Linux - who could compile tatoolbar first - and provide it for trying to write the source browser? Thank you in advance. Hi, What is the difference between {\delta} and \delta? Former is OK, but the second is not compiled. ConTeXt ignores crop in some pdf graphics

Hello! After updating ConTeXt I found out that it has suddenly started to ignore the crop in some of my pdf graphics. These graphics look ok (=cropped) in Acrobat and SumatraPDF, but when the graphic is placed, the cropbox (?) is ignored and there's all this blank space around the graphic, space that shouldn't be there. This is new behaviour, all of the graphics worked as expected in my previous ConTeXt (from September 2017). Minimal sample is attached to this email, hopefully it is small enough to make it to the mailing list. After a quick look it seems that all the problematic graphics are pdf output from CorelDraw, from different versions of that. Oddly the problem doesn't affect all cropped graphics that originate from CorelDraw, just some of them. There are even graphics that have been outputted from one and same file where one works and the other doesn't. If this only concerns files from Corel (and not those I cropped in Acrobat), I can fix it in Corel if necessary. However, it would be preferable if ConTeXt can be forced to take the cropping into account. I tried looking for a solution on the wiki, but it wasn't very helpful (or I don't know what I'm looking for). I thought adding something to \externalfigure might do the trick, but there doesn't seem to be a suitable key. Thanks, Mari

xtables multipage horizontally

Hi, the wiki says for xtables and multipage "yes, even horizontally". How can I do that? Doing this: \setupxtable[split=yes] is not enough since this only gives vertically splitting. Strange vertical result with itemize in columns

Hi, the following example generates (with latest standalone) the attached result. As you can see, the final item is not correctly aligned vertically. Problem with simplefonts

Hello! Partly due to the upcoming ConTeXt meeting I updated my ConTeXt, although with the --current option for latest stable. Most of my files compile fine and there don't seem to be any problems. However, the big beast fails right after loading env-fonts-23 (attached) and it seems to be a problem connected to the Simplefonts module. Errors while processing xml file

Hi all, some time ago I started a project to learn more about xml processing. I thought it would be nice to typeset texts from the German Text Archive. So I setup an environment to do this. https://github.com/juh2/tei-style-dta-context It's a very poor project, because most of the code is taken from https://github.com/ousia/from-pandoc-to-context I started to get an idea how xml processing works. Now after some upgrades of context I get an error message that confuses me, It's in the attached zip file. As you can see I had to type enter a few times, but the file finally processes to the end. The error message seems to point to commented lines, and I don't understand this. Do you have any hints? juh

How to cite online websites (reloaded)

Hello guys, I've checked some articles on the wiki as well as the publications manual, but the results I get aren't what I expect. I hope that you can help me. I'd love to do short BibTeX entries like @Misc{lnkGGL, note = "zuletzt abgerufen am \date[d=05, m=06, y=2018]", url = "http://www.google.com" } because sometimes this is all info I can get. Now I want an entry in the \placelistofpublications area with only the link and the note when I opened the website the last time. That's what I get from ConTeXt so far when I use \cite[lnkGGL]: [1], _http://www.google.com_ (unveröffentlicht). (zuletzt abgerufen am 5. Juni 2018) How would one get this output instead: [1] _http://www.google.com_ (zuletzt abgerufen am 5. opbd not behaving properly?

I get a Lua error. Using the same beta, opbd don’t seem to work anymore. I mean, opbd worked with ConTeXt about a year: \showframe \definefontfeature[default][default][protrusion=quality, opbd=yes] \definefontfamily[mainface][rm][TestOPBD] \setupbodyfont[mainface, 60pt] \setupalign[hanging] \starttext Ἠ\\Ἠ\\Ἦ\\ἯἯ \stoptext I mean, I compile it, but lfbd isn’t used at all (I attach the test font I use). Bug in newest ConTeXt with anglebetween?

luatex on the garden

Hi, We now have a new version of luatex on the garden. This is the anual context meeting release which is a prelude to next years 1.10 version for texlive. The version number is 1.08 (as 1.09 will be out in a few months and mostly concerns some fixes needed for arm). For the average user there are no real differences (luatex 1.10 will basically be functionality complete). Of course we use lua 5.3 (1.10 might actually use 5.4). You can expect (depending on usage) a bit better performance as i wrapped some (yet) unsupported stuff into fallback functions. Things to watch out for: context now uses a one-pass mp approach which so far worked ok (alan an i tested it in regular usage). This might boost performance in case where extensive mp embedding takes place. Poppler is gone and replaced by pplib by Pawel Jakowski written for us. Currently he and luigi are finetuning the c code for portability. Users should not notice this (but it removes a dependency). More on some of the consequences later. It also makes the binary smaller. The binary mode in mplib is not available in luatex. It has no real benefits (and is probably not used, not even by alan) apart from research. This removes a large dependency on foreign code (we try to minimlize that) and again makes the binary smaller. We might introduce 64 bit scaled at some point (luigi will look into that next year). There are some changes in terms of efficiency that kick in now. I only tested on my setup but it's probably ok. Don't expect drastic improvements wrr to average performsance from now on. For those on windows: i noticed a performance difference between the native and mingw binaries (with native being slower, mostly due to format saving and loading). A lot of work went into this release and we hope that it's worth it. I will rmove some older code paths in a few weeks (less code that way) so then beta's will assume the new binary is used.
