Hello, I need to have itemize with "joinedup" option inside footnote which comes within itemize: ---- \starttext A% \startitemize[][] \item ItemA% \footnote{% Some text \startitemize[joinedup][] % <<< "joinedup" doesn't work here <<< \item Item1 \item Item2 \stopitemize } \item ItemB% \stopitemize \stoptext ---- Here, there is an unwanted blank line between "Item 1" and "Some text". How to avoid or to remove the unwanted blank line? (A solution for ConTeXt "pre-LMTX" would be preferred, due to the fact that I was not able (so far) to rebuild all Lua extensions (.dll) from 5.3 ("pre-LMTX" Ctx) to 5.4 (Ctx - "LMTX") version.) When trying to upload an image I get following error message: "Could not open lock file for "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/c/c2/wiki-yfrak-mtxrun-pattern.png". Make sure your upload directory is configured correctly and your web server has permission to write to that directory." I have been logged in my wiki page "Fraktur fonts". Please, can I do anything else than filling in the asked question boxes of "https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Special:Upload"? Rudolf

tex.month can't be overridden like tex.day and tex.year

Dear list, in the following document I can set the date as seen by LuaTeX so the date functions use a different date: --- \starttext \ctxlua{tex.year=1980; tex.month=1; tex.day=15} % Taken from https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/date, % outputs 15 may 1980 \date[m=1][day,~,{\monthshort\normalmonth},~,year] % outputs January 15, 1980 \ctxlua{context.date{m=tex.month};} \stoptext --- This works for all parts of the date (even the weekday), except the month. I've looked through the core-con.lua and found nothing that would explain this (or what I'd need to change), as the tex.month is properly set. Best regards Tristan

Reading XML with lua

Hi, I’ m finally at a point where I can read an XML file look at it and write it back. Right now I have two problems: 1. There are many empty entries in the table. This makes processing the file a little tedious since I have to filter the real entries. 2. Some entries contain leading and trailing whitespace and linkebreaks. These are the result of formatting the XML file. Shouldn't strip_cm_and_dt take care of them? Or do I use that incorrectly? I have included my lua file and an example xml. Unicode mathematics in ConTeXt

Dear gang, I need to convert a document from TeX-style to Unicode mathematics. For example: \starttext \def\ANTI{{^{\rm nt}}} \def\CATCA{$\cal \bf C\ANTI$} \CATCA \stoptext Issues: 1. I need calligraphic characters, but the relevant characters in latinmodern-math.otf are not encoded in (standard) Unicode. The same goes for the tex-gyre-math fonts. 2. What comprehensive unicode-math fonts do you recommend as an alternative? 3. In the above example, \cal is used. 4. Other issues may arise, e.g., getting subscripts and superscripts correct. How might one rewrite the above with Unicode mathematics in mind? Is there a My Way or some other guide to Unicode mathematics in ConTeXt? This writer has never had to think about this matter before so this is all new ground to learn. Thank you in advance for any guidance. XML xmldoif struggle!

Hi, I've the following XML tag in my XML file: <invoice number="194-002" client="RPMB-0012"> <currency>EURO</currency> ..... with invoice being the root tag! Now I have a setup defined as below (only part!): \startxmlsetups xml:invoice:invoice \xmlfirst{#1}{currency} \par \xmldoif{\xmlfirst{#1}{currency}}{contains(text(),'EURO')} { Euro set! \par } ..... The \xmlfirst{#1}{currency} command prints EURO as expected. But the xmldoif command doesn't cause the Euro set be printed?! What's wrong here? The manual xml-mkiv.pdf doesn't give me any hint on how to make this work! Regards, Gerard --

Hi, according to xml-mliv.pdf there is a command \xmlloadfile But I get: tex error > tex error on line 168 in file /Users/axel/Documents/Text/Dokumente_ConTeXt/Prozessbeschreibung/prozess-style-buffer.tex: ! Undefined control sequence l.168 \xmlloadfile {doclist.xml}{doclist}{} and grep does not find it. \xmlload works. Greetings Axel

Hyphenation questions

1. is there an analog to \hyp{} command from the 'hyphenat' package? Double words with a dash happen all too often. 2. how to switch language for just three words for correct hyphenation? 3. if the citation in APS format falls out of the right margin, what needs to be changed to adjust it? 4. In APS, I cannot figure out how to make a space appear between the numbers for cited sources. [1, p. 1,2, p. 2]. But [1, p. 1, 2, p. 2] is what is desired. In one case it did appear automatically, but all others don't work. \cite[righttext={{{, p.~1}},{{, p.~2}}}][book1,book2]

No menu bar option for Adobe Reader

Hi, I use the "Hide menu bar" option extensively in Adobe Acrobat Reader to get a cleaner interface. To this end, I usually hack lpdf-mis.lua after a ConTeXt upgrade to create a \setupinteractionscreen[option=nomenubar] switch. I wonder if it would be possible to add this little feature to the source code. Perhaps it can be useful to others as well. Greetings! LMTX and system fonts

Dear list, fonts are my main problem using LMTX (on both Windows and Linux platforms). In Windows (I installed it again from scratch yesterday), system fonts (from c:/windows/fonts/) are simply ignored (I don’t know why). In Linux, a symlink in tex/texmf-fonts/ to the directory where fonts are stored doesn’t work either. The weird thing is that the ConTeXt Suite in both OSes works fine with system fonts or the mentioned symlink. What am I missing here? Many thanks for your help, Pablo -- http://www.ousia.tk

Hi Hans, It seems that there is a conflict between \startplacetable and \startlocalfootnotes: in the following example when the latter command (and its \stop counterpart) is commented out the table is placed correctly in the middle, while otherwise the table is not centered. I just started testing with lmtx and this minor detail with different file names presented: fourth2.tex compiles to produce fourth2.pdf but fourth.2.tex compiles to produce fourth.pdf With mkiv I get fourth2.pdf and fourth.2.pdf Not a problem, just an observation.

PDF output routine in lmtx

Hi in lmtx the pdf output routine has changed afaik. I just wanted to report, that in lmtx our printer/copier (Ricoh 8200S or Ricoh 8110S) doesn't print any character. A standard document as the MWE prints well under mkiv. Under lmtx, there is no output (blank sheet). In a document with a tikz-figure, the tikz-figure (without labels, as they are text) is printed. Something with text output must have changed, that makes it incompatible with the copier at our school. I tried to print with different drivers and also used the printers interface (direct print via usb-stick). No success. Are they some flags I can play with (like other pdf-version or so) to find a solution to this problem? This "bug" prevents me to use lmtx at out school. MWE: \starttext That is a test. \stoptext Of course there is no problem with the preview and the output works on a HP-Printer. Many thanks for all suggestions! Christian

If you use deeptextcommand instead of textcommand, the pageleft parameter can't be redefined. On the other hand, textcommand would let me set pageleft and pageright, but its argument is not pure text, and i don't know how to get the id from it. How can i solve this problem? Lua os.date() localization in context

Hi all, I would like to print the day name of a date in french using my current locale. In lua I can do: > os.setlocale('fr_FR.UTF-8',all) > print(os.date("%A")) But in a cld document it doesn't work. Context complains about using "os.locale in a supposedly locale neutral enviroment" and it prints the day name in english. How can I translate the day names without hardcoding everything? @Hans: Thanks a lot, I'm looking forward to testing it. @Alan: Like Hans said. It's a new option, and I have it activated in my local environment file. It's the only and clumsy way to control the interface setting since Adobe Reader cannot save the state of the menu bar permanently (which is complete nonsense). I use Acrord because I'm used to it and because I think it still has the best subpixel rendering, at least in the Linux world (with Wine). Mozilla's PDF.js comes close though. Paul

Strange backgroundcolors with showgrid and luacode

Dear all, When typesetting an old list of exercises, I noticed that when \showgrid is active and a luafunction is called, there is some unwanted and strange background colors (gray and blue, or yellow and blue). Thes background colors seems to show up on an unfilled page when a lua function is used, and I could come up with the following minimal example which gives the attached PDF. Page comments work when I use the commands \startpagecomment and \stoppagecomment directly (like in the first page), but when I invoke via macros (as in the second page), ConTeXt produces errors. Hello, I believe that using GeoGebra for drawing, exporting to TikZ is the most approachable method for me to be able to create mathematic-related material like exams for the children in the primary school, but need some info how to adjust GeoGebra's TikZ output (suitable for LaTeX) for ConTeXt? Formula number misplaced

Dear list, The problem I describe does not make itself apparent in all situations, but sometimes the formula number, which is placed by \start...\stopplaceformula, is misplaced and there appears a gap between it and the right margin. The MWE below reproduces the problem in the latest beta and lmtx. It can be "fixed", however, by replacing \start...\stopTEXpage by \start...\stoptext, so this might not represent the most generic incarnation. preparing math exams

Hello, I wonder what would be recommended way to prepare math exams for primary school (e.g. 5th to 8th grade) which involves drawing lines, segments, angles, polygons, circles, drawing functions etc.? For regular formulas involving e.g. rational numbers, I'm sure that input language for math is quite sufficient, but wonder about drawing part? mathalign: specifying distance with glue

Hi, amsmath provides an environment `flalign` that flushes the "block" for display math. See page 6 (pdf page 27) of my article on display math in context (https://www.ntg.nl/maps/34/06.pdf) for an example. As shown in that article, I could achieve the same behavior in context mathalign by using distance=2em plus 1fil. Text on curves

I have been trying to typeset text onto curves and have been successful with the help of the MetaFun manual, and the followtext command which I saw in some correspondence between dr Hans van der Meer and Hans Hagen on the mailing list in January this year ( the subject was Double Follow Tokens). The followtext command seems to used for a simple line of text and if I increase the number of words in the line the font size is reduced to make it fit to the length of the curve (see MWE below). I would like to typeset complete paragraphs on the curve(s) and the only way I see of doing this without the font size changing is to manually create each line separately. Is their a way where this can be done by MetaFun automatically rather than manually? It would be really nice if I could create a number of curves and then MetaFun typsets a paragraph of text on to them. Also, can other options be used with followtext e.g. \input file? I'm a complete novice with MetaFun so any advice appreciated. Hi all, "when manipulating in one area you will have to manipulate also in other aeras” I must confess. I asked some time ago about manipulating the pagenumber. However now I am confronted with the fact, that in the TOC the manipulated pagenumbers should be taken into account. Hello, I'm trying to get four small A6 pages on one A4 page (portrait) like this: 4 1 3 2 The last two pages should be upside down. This is my starting point: \setuppapersize[A6][A4] \setuparranging[1*4] Aside from the different page sequence, this rotates the last two pages, which is not what I'm looking for. Can anyone help me with this? Sorry if this has been covered before. I'm not very familiar with imposition. Greetings! Paul

Variable space with hanging description

Dear all, I recently switched to mkiv and experienced some problems with descriptions when set with alternative=hanging. The horizontal space between the description title and the rest of the text varies a lot and looks ugly. When the same code is compiled with mkii, this space is almost constant (replace alternative=hanging by location=hanging in mkii). Hi, Last year after my speech at BachoTeX, Hans told me, that we can get a local catalogue of ConTeXt macros. So I wrote on a piece of paper two commands but did not note much more and now I am not sure what do they stand for mtxrun --script server --auto When I run this, I got this on my console resolvers | trees | analyzing '/home/dthiriet/texmf' mtx-server | running at port: 8088 mtx-server | document root: /usr/local/share/texmf-dist/scripts/context/lua mtx-server | main index file: unknown mtx-server | scripts subpath: /usr/local/share/texmf-dist/scripts/context/lua mtx-server | context services: http://localhost:8088/mtx-server-ctx-startup.lua and then nothing appends for a quite long time (10 minutes). Is it building a base or something like this? How long should I wait to have it made? The second command I note is mtxrun --gethelp --url=http://localhost:8088/mtx-server-ctx-help.lua?command=%command% --command= "\definecolor" When I run this, I get sh: http://localhost:8088/mtx-server-ctx-help.lua?command=definecolor: not found Is it because I did not build the base, or did I miss something (typo or so on?) Hi, ConTeXt used to recover better from errors. Consider the following file: ============= \xyz \abc \starttext HELLO \stoptext ============= Running ConTeXt ver: 2019.03.21 21:39 MKIV beta fmt: 2019.3.26 int: english/english would catch both "Undefined control sequence" errors before exiting with the message "mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 256". (I either press enter to move to the next error, or I use the --nonstopmode option.) Now with ConTeXt ver: 2019.04.13 17:01 MKIV beta fmt: 2019.4.15 int: english/english, even when I do not supply the --nonstopmode option, ConTeXt exits abnormally with the same error message right after discovering the first undefined control sequence. The old "?" TeX prompt allowing once to fix the misspellings, etc. does not appear at all. Has some defaults changed? Is it possible to get the old behavior? Thanks, ~MHB

Fix the error: \quotation[tufte} —> \quotation{tufte} Re-run the file. The PDF preview remains gray. Print the PDF file or view it in full screen mode, the output is correct. \page is essential for some reason. Alan

Adjust kerning with superscript

Dear list, I am unhappy with how some fonts kern particular subscripts. For example in the default Latin Modern, subscripts to the Greek capital gamma could use some negative kerning. Because I can't (and don't want to) fix the font, I thought that I could patch the font on-the-fly in ConTeXt. The usual approach with fonts.handlers.otf.addfeature works well in math mode, but does not extend into subscripts (MWE below). Is there a method to adjust subscript kernings? Could this be done using mathkerns? Latin Modern doesn't have any but maybe they can be added on the fly. Missing font features in page header if \feature[-] is used in header text

Dear list, With latest ConTeXt beta (13-04-2019) I notice that font features seem ignored in page header rendering. (missing kern between Ps in « Psalme » and different Th in « Thimothee ». Anything I am doing wrong ? Rendering is fine if \headerok is used. Any help would be appreciated. To cite like [1, p. 101] \cite[righttext={\nbsp p.~101}][Hankins:2014] works, but has no comma \cite[righttext={, p.~101}][Hankins:2014] produces no page \cite[righttext={,\nbsp p.~101}][Hankins:2014] gives no page at all \cite[righttext={\nbsp, p.~101}][Hankins:2014] gives no page at all. righttext seems to be reluctant over the initial comma right after the reference number.

Hi, on the last page of my index, there are two entries printed over each other, see attached screenshot. How can this happen? Any hints how to avoid it? Sorry, no MWE yet, probably hard to reproduce... Latest, i.e. yesterday’s beta with LuaTeX; the same with the previous version. Also the same problem with lmtx, except that the text is garbage (I’m using Cambria.ttc). caching buffers?

Ahoi, in my book I use a lot of buffers for examples. These get typeset (compiled) anew on every tex run (i.e. several times per context run). This needs a lot of time and is quite annoying. Is this somehow cacheable, so that it compiles only once per context run or (even better) only if the buffer changed? How does the filter module handle this? I know it uses some checksum. Should I "outsource" my buffers via t-filter? If you need a MWE for this, I’ll assemble one. My actual setup is quite complicated, maybe that’s the problem... Hello all, If I run the following document on a 8 GByte RAM Linux machine. It takes more than 30 minutes until luaotfload has build the cache for Sparks-Dotline-Medium.otf. If I run another Program in the background that it never ends (too less memory). On my Mac the first run with context (upcoming TL2019) needs 9.5 Gbyte memory and nearly 100% CPU load to scan the Sparks-Dotline font. This one is, of course, 400 kB big, but why do we need more than 8 GByte Ram?? List, With the following example, endnotes are set differently with MKIV and LMTX – incorrectly under LMTX. Prevent indentation after itemize

Hello, Czech typo rules prefer not indenting paragraphs after itemization. How to setup indenting best to achieve this? The following code gives the desired output: ---- \setupindenting[yes,big] \starttext \section{Sec} \input knuth \startitemize[][after={\blank\noindent}] \item Aaa \item Bbb \stopitemize % "%" JUST TO SUPPRESS BLANK LINE \input knuth \stoptext ---- but (obviously) forces user to suppress a blank line between \stopitemize and next text (thus "% JUST TO SUPPRESS BLANK LINE"). Is there a way which would "gobble" next \par after \stopitemize to allow to write simply (without "% ... luatex crash around page 1000

Hi, I have a compilation problem with a data driven document. This is what I get after around 12min (first run)... [..] pages > flushing realpage 991, userpage 970, subpage 991 pages > flushing realpage 992, userpage 971, subpage 992 pages > flushing realpage 993, userpage 972, subpage 993 mtx-context | fatal error: return code: -1073741571 It compiles fine if I just use the first or second "half" of the data. But as soon as I reach a certain amount of pages, it crashes. An older version compiled fine with 958 users pages (977 total). Seems that the data has reached a dimension that causes a resource problem. Any advice? I looked into "texmf.cnf" and "texmfcnf.lua" for possible bottlenecks, but I lack the knowledge what to change. And it simply takes too much (run)time to just play around with some values. Dear All, I try to save \localhsize in a variable (with \edef), but whenever the enclosure changes, my variable changes too. \starttext \edef\myVar{\dimexpr (\localhsize-15pt)\relax} localhsize: \the\dimexpr\localhsize\relax \\ myVar: \the\dimexpr\myVar\relax \\ \setupnarrower[middle=50mm] \startnarrower localhsize: \the\dimexpr\localhsize\relax \\ myVar: \the\dimexpr\myVar\relax \\ \stopnarrower \stoptext I would expect that myVar has the same value inside the narrower as outside, because I used \edef and not \def. So at the first pages there is not chapter and chapternumber and the "–" is printed alone. So I want something like this: \if\getmarking[chapternumber] {\getmarking[chapternumber] – \getmarking[chapter]} \fi That is of course no valid code. How to implement that if-condition? gnuplot-module broken under lmtx

Hi It's little off-topic as there are officially no modules included in lmtx. But when I used the modules from a mkiv-installation, there was little to no problem. But with the gnuplot-module I can't fix the error myself. MWE: \usemodule[gnuplot] \startGNUPLOTscript[sin] plot sin(x) \stopGNUPLOTscript \starttext \placefigure[here]{Sine Test}{\useGNUPLOTgraphic[sin]} \stoptext Under mkiv everything is fine. mkiv creates a file gnuplot-gnuplot-1.plt, sends this file to gnuplot and uses the output gnuplot-gnuplot-1-ctx.tex. Under lmtx only the files gnuplot-gnuplot-1.tmp and gnuplot-gnuplot-inclusions.tmp are created. When I copy the correct .plt file from a mkiv-run, no gnuplot-gnuplot-1-ctx.tex is generated. If I copy the correct -ctx.tex file from a mkiv-run, I still get an error. Strange behavior in math mode: < and minus sign give leftarrow

Hi Hans, While testing old documents with lmtx, I noticed that with recent versions of mkiv, as well as LuaMetaTeX, there is a strange behavior in math mode: when the characters < and - follow each other one gets \leftarrow… This is embarrassing when one writes inequalities for negative numbers. So one has to separate them in order to obtain with curly braces. Can this be fixed or is it intended ? \starttext $\alpha < -1$ $\alpha \leftarrow 1$ $\alpha < {-1}$ $\alpha {<} - 1$ \stoptext Best regards: OK

DIN lang folder with crop marks

Hallo, I'm new to ConTeXt and am crazy enough to start with something nonstandard. Of course I got stuck pretty fast. I started out with this: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/DIN_lang_folder and then found some info on crop marks here: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/PaperSetup#Crop_marks I tried different options (marked=on, market=colour, marked=color..., something with \setuplayout[location={middle,middle}]...) Some times the crop marks don't show at all, sometimes they are set off a bit so they don't fit with the actual document. I added the whole file as I really do not knwo (yet) how to reduce things... SyncTeX and Skim/TeXShop

Hi, is anyone using ConTeXt with Skim, or TeXShop, on macOS? SyncTeX used to work fine with ConTeXt in both apps. Now, it seems that ConTeXt has started to generate a .synctex file rather than a .synctex.gz, and the format seems to have changed (?). As I haven’t followed recent (or perhaps not so recent) developments in this area, do you have any suggestions to make SyncTeX work again? I am using Skim, but any PDF viewer would be fine if Skim cannot be used for the purpose any longer. Thanks in advance, Nicola

endnotes customizing how?

In typesetting my endnotes with \placenotes[endnote] I seem unable to unfluence the text characteristics. I tried things like (1) \setupnotes[endnote][textcolor=blue] (2) changed fonts before the \ bgroup\bf\placenote\egroup call (3) \startsetups[setups:endnotes] \setupwhitespace[0pt] \stopsetups % textstyle influences endnotemarker in the text. \setupnote[endnote][textcommand=\hifnmarker,before=\directsetup{setups:endnotes}] (4) \setupnotes[endnote][bodyfont=italic] Where (3) made a difference in linespacing, nothing else does. Expanding text across two table cells

Hello, I use a progress note format which contains information that doesn't change much from session to session. Items like date, location, people attending a session. I would like to include two longer items, a diagnostic field and info about guardianship at the end of a table. Both of these fields should span two cells in the table and wrap to the full width. Currently, they wrap to the width of the first table column. The cells appear to be spanned correctly, but the text does not extend. What am I missing? Ctx LMTX + Lua 5.4

Hello, I'm using a custom .dll in Ctx (my own .dll written in C with some extensions to Lua). Whenever Ctx started to use a newer version of Lua, I rebuilt the .dll with the appropriate version of lua*.dll. With the latest (non-LMTX) Ctx, I used Lua53.dll from: http://www.w32tex.org/toolsw32/lua53lib.zip (THIS LINK IS NO MORE VALID!) and https://www.tug.org/svn/texlive/trunk/Master/bin/win32/lua53.dll (thanks Akira in the mailing thread "Building a custom .dll to work with ConTeXt (LuaTeX)"). I would like to "upgrade" my .dll to work with Ctx LMTX - where could I find the appropriate lua54lib.zip (.lib and Lua54.dll for Ctx LMTX)? Best regards, Lukas -- Ing.
