something between packed and "small"??

Me again... I've got an itemize that needs to fit on one page. I've been using inbetween={\blank[small]} for all the other analogous lists but this one is longer and with that spacing, it goes about one inch onto the next page. But if I use packed, the list is way too crammed together and there's about 2.5 inches of extra space on the page! How do I go smaller than small? Is there a "lightly packed"? Or other degrees? I've tried \blank[1mm] and other dimensions but nothing will go smaller than small... :-( THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!! Wiki ConText Installation updated

Hi all, Today I updated the ConText behind wiki.contextgarden.net, live.contextgarden.net and source.contextgarden.net to the current latest: 2020.06.30 17:30. * The wiki’s <context> tag now defaults to “lmtx” mode, and you can switch back to “mkiv“ using the “mode” attribute. The “mkii” mode is no longer working. * The wiki’s <syntax> now supports the latest ConText as well, and I added support for all the “system-level” commands. Also the colors have changed a little and generated commands now have a link back to generating command. * the live website always run lmtx. * the source website’s software has been improved a little as well; I have updated the documentation page accordingly. Avoid indentation after \typebuffer

Hi, I want to avoid indentation after \typebuffer (or set indentnext to auto perhaps). I am probably missing something simple, but I thought that the example file below should have worked: \setupindenting[yes,medium] \setuptyping[buffer][ indentnext=no, ] \starttext \startbuffer \startformula \int_a^b f'(x)\,dx \stopformula \stopbuffer \typebuffer I do not want this line to be indented. \stoptext Compiled with an updated lmxt, and resulting pdf file is attached. /Mikael

\hideframe to cancel \showframe

Hi, say that I, for educational purposes, want to use \showframe for a couple of pages, and then want to hide the frames. What is the correct way of doing this? I have for now added a \begingroup and \endgroup, but then another document parameter that is set inside is cancelled after the \endgroup. I tried to look in the source, but could not find anything that worked (what I tried with was to use \setupbackgrounds[state=stop], but that was merely a guess, and it did not work). /Mikael

Commands with arguments before in ConTeXt

I've read the following is not possible in TeX \def#1\macro{blabla#1} where arguments come before. The only partial exceptions are commands like \atop or \over, which are in fact primitives. Is there a way to do this in ConTeXt? Could it be a feature request for LuaMetaTeX? I've seen Hans experimenting a lot with new primitives and new possibilities for arguments, like #0 and co., so I ask in case it's not too nonsensical to propose it. Regards Jairo :)

Converting from LaTeX for PDF accessibility tagging?

Hello, I tried ConTeXt a few years ago, then gave up on it because of its wordiness and verbosity. The 2006 article on creating AMSTeX output in ConTeXt at https://www.ntg.nl/maps/34/06.pdf shows exactly what I mean: the LaTeX commands are small and neat; the ConTeXt commands are not. However, I need now to use ConTeXt for accessibility tagging, so I'm prepared to give it another try. And this means converting some LaTeX documents into ConTeXt. Is there a better way than using pandoc? I ran a LaTeX document through pandoc, but the result is certainly not fully "ConTeXt compliant", and generates errors instead of compiling. I can get easily lost on the ConTeXt site: the documentation is there in plenty, but seems hard to search. The main problem for me is mathematics and alignment: not just for equations, but for matrices and arrays. What I'd love - if it exists - is a document showing how to rewrite LaTeX into ConTeXt. Something like the above document, which is now 14 years old. I also notice that much of the contextgarden wiki is outdated. For example, on the use of ConTeXt in MikTeX, we read "As of end of June 2011 MikTeX is still (or again) non-functional." I'm aware that all of this is the work of dedicated and unpaid volunteers, so this is not a complaint! Just an observation. Footnotes in math mode

Hi list! I want to know how to properly use footnotes in math mode. The following: \starttext \startformula \int_{a}^{b} f(x) d x=\lim _{h=0}\left[\int_{a}^{c-h} f(x) d x+\int_{c+h}^{b} f(x) d x\right] \startfootnote Footnote \stopfootnote \stopformula \stoptext doesn't complain but it doesn't show the footnote either. So, I'm using the following workaround: \starttext \startformula \int_{a}^{b} f(x) d x=\lim _{h=0}\left[\int_{a}^{c-h} f(x) d x+\int_{c+h}^{b} f(x) d x\right]\note[mynote1] \stopformula \footnotetext[mynote1]{Cauchy s'occupe du cas...} \stoptext However, 1) I have to create notes every time and it's kinda annoying when a large amount of formulas are annotated (I've read somewhere it's bad practice to (ab)use footnotes in math writing, but I see this often in books from the 19th century or earlier), 2) the numbering is bold. Making the numbering normal rather than bold would be fine, but I want to know about a better solution. Thank you in advance Jairo :) PS: How to answer messages sent to the mailing list? Hello, yesterday while exploring features/plugins of Kakoune (https://kakoune.org/) editor I, naturally, asked about ConTeXt/LaTeX support and was told about TexLab project (https://github.com/latex-lsp/texlab) bringing LSP (https://microsoft.github.io/language-server-protocol/) support for LaTeX. Interestingly enough, by browsing through the tickets I've found the following issue: "ConTeXt support" (https://github.com/latex-lsp/texlab/issues/166) where one of the, afaict, main devs of the project replied with: "ConTeXt support is definitely in scope of this project. Our LaTeX parser does not rely on LaTeX specifics but a lot of the features like code completion rely on LaTeX specifics. Nevertheless, supporting ConTeXt is a lot of effort at the moment as I have never used ConTeXt before. Supporting the project structure of ConTeXt would probably be the first step. " Of course, I'm glad that TexLab project does provide LSP support and bringing it to the Kakoune editor as well, but I'm sure that many of you know that bringing ConTeXt support to TexLab would benefit users of **many** other editors since these today many most popular editors (Atom, Emacs, SublimeText, (neo)Vimn, VScode...) are having support for LSP. Unfortuantely, I'm ConTeXt noob and not speaking Rust, but just want to bring the information if there are people familiar with both about potential benefit for ConTeXt to get LSP support. pagecolumns: get the current column

Hello list, I'm using a 2-columns layout and I'd like to put some information in the margin. I should put that information in the left margin when I'm in the left column, and in the right margin when I'm in the right column, to prevent the extra information overlapping the main text in the other column. I found a useful counter in page-pcl.mkiv: \c_page_col_current. Here's a MWE: \unprotect \def\curCol{\c_page_col_current} \protect \def\InfoInMargin#1{\doifelse{\the\curCol}{1}{\inmargin{#1}}{\inothermargin{#1}}} \def\TestText{\InfoInMargin{\bf \the\curCol}\input ward \InfoInMargin{\bf \the\curCol} \input ward} \starttext \startpagecolumns[n=2,distance=25mm] \dorecurse{5}{\TestText\par} \stoppagecolumns \stoptext \c_page_col_current works most of the time, but unfortunately it tells you the current column before the lines of a paragraph get distributed over columns. So sometimes it fails. You can see that in the MWE: the bold "1" between columns in the upper part of the page. It should be a bold "2" in the right margin. Which lua XML library is embedded in LMTX?

According to the XML manual: << 2.1 >> TEX versus LUA It will not come as a surprise that we can access xml files from TEX as well as from Lua. In fact there are two methods to deal with xml in Lua. First there are the low level xml functions in the xml namespace. On top of those functions there is a set of functions in the lxml namespace that deals with xml in a more TEXie way. << 3.7 >> manipulation You can use Lua code to manipulate the tree and it makes no sense to duplicate this in TEX. In the future we might provide an interface to some of this functionality. Keep in mind that manipuating the tree might have side effects as we maintain several indices into the tree that also needs to be updated then. Having read that, I was loooking for the documentation of the commands that are available in the xml namespace. I want to manipulate a XML tree in LMTX lua. But looking online gives me all kinds of different XML-solutions that are proposed for lua. Which one is embedded in LMTX and available in the xml namespace? But then I get confused because other elements like xml.first, xml.collected are in the xml namespavce and mentioned. So, maybe I misunderstand things and is the documentation in << 5.5 >> selectors and injectors This section describes a bit special feature, one that we needed for a project where we could not touch the original content but could add specific sections for our own purpose. Hopefully the example demonstrates its useability. But that part I do not understand. What I need (in LMTX lua) to add (sub)nodes to the XML node (that I read with xml.first()) because the data I get is broken and I need to fix it before I can use it (and I cannot get good data) The easiest way is to add the correct data to the XML and then use it in my code. If I cannot do that I need to write parallel code that largely does the same as what I already have (ugh).. G

Hi, I try to update and to fill the french content of mult-def.lua. Currently, I have an updated "mult-def.lua" file. 3 questions : 1/ which commands should be executed in order to make the new local interface effective with context 2/ which commands should be executed in order to build a local version of setup-fr.pdf 3/ many commands in setup-fr.pdf are not documented in mult-def.lua where does the additionnal translations should come from ? Hi, I uploaded a new version (both mkiv and lmtx). We removed some low level no longer used code (older engines), normalized some in the process, fixed a few things, etc. === lmtx only === While updating the cld manual I decided to also add an other table mechanism (in addition to the one already reported in an earlier mail). I have no clue how useful it is, but as usual with tex, users find ways to (ab)use it. This one behaves a bit more like registers. Today I discovered that my LMTX version (2020.06.20) does not render an \externalfigure with .jpeg extension. After renaming to .jpg the picture is correctly shown. I would suggest to add the .jpeg extension to the list of allowed graphic types in LMTX. With greetings, Sytse Knypstra

Automatic userdata storage between runs

Hello, first - thanks for the perfectly synoptical https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Programming_in_LuaTeX#Namespaces ! My question (and the answer sould appear on wiki, too): Is any of the namespaces (userdata, thirddata, moduledata, documentdata, parametersets) automatically serialized between Ctx first(-second(-third)) runs? I'm asking because user may call some (longer) code and put the result into a namespace (be it e.g. "userdata"). And if that namespace was automatically serialized for next run(s), that code could be called conditionally - typically just in first run (= mode "*first" enabled) - as in next runs results of the additional code would be available in a namespace (instead of repetitive call of that (longer) code). Of course, user can perform such evaluation, storage and conditional extra-code-call individually, but maybe there is some support for similar situations in Ctx. Best regards, Lukas

CMYK workflow. How to set and should I worry about

Colleagues I'm getting ready to send a book to the printers and in their blurb they state "/Ensure that you are using a CMYK workflow and export to PDF/X-1a:2001" . /I can set the pdf format using \setupbackend but I'm unsure as to what to do about CMYK workflow. METAPOST's uniformdeviate is not truly random (seed)

I’m trying to get a real random number in METAPOST MWE: \startMPpage[instance=doublefun] show uniformdeviate 60; \stopMPpage Every time I run this, it shows the same result. I tried playing around with the randomseed, but for instance when I do two runs shortly after each other they still are very predictable. E.g. this in METAPOST: whatever = lua( "math.randomseed( tonumber(tostring(os.time()):reverse():sub(1,6)) )"); randomseed := lua.math.random(); minutespast := uniformdeviate 60; Called shortly after each other (two LMTX runs) gets me the same result. What is a good way to get better random numbers in METAPOST (LMTX)? Thanks, G

loading xml error

Please can someone explain the following error and why the one specific XML input fails? It turns out that a single node <node/> is not accepted by the core whereas others are ok. Hi all, I have a family of graphs to draw in Metapost and I would like to attribute a different color to each of them according to the value of a certain variable. Assuming that the path mygraph(j) depends on the variable j, which is computed within a lua code and passed to Metapost, I wonder if it is possible to define an array of colors named mycolor, so that I could say draw mygraph(j) withcolor mycolor(j) ; Here the variable j takes integer values (say between 1 and 10), and one would have defined mycolor(1) through mycolor(10). Hi, Here's an update about what Wolfgang and I are doing in the lmtx code base i.e. where it differs from the mkiv code. Much has to do with cleaner code, less memory usage and less tracing clutter. To some extend it might be more efficient in terms of runtime, but in practice there is not much (measurable) to gain at the macro level wrt speed. Most bottlenecks are at the Lua end anyway. (1) macro arguments: In tex a macro argument is defined with numbers, so \def\foo#1#2{... #2 ... #2 ...} in luametatex we can have some variants #0 : the argument is picked up but not stored #- : the argument is ignored and not even counted #+ : the argument is picked up but no outer braces are removed There is some explanation in the evenmore document, like: \def\foo [#1]{\detokenize{#1}} \def\ofo [#0]{\detokenize{#1}} \def\oof [#+]{\detokenize{#1}} \def\fof[#1#-#2]{\detokenize{#1#2}} \def\fff[#1#0#3]{\detokenize{#1#3}} \meaning\foo\ : <\foo[{123}]> \crlf \meaning\ofo\ : <\ofo[{123}]> \crlf \meaning\oof\ : <\oof[{123}]> \crlf \meaning\fof\ : <\fof[123]> \crlf \meaning\fff\ : <\fof[123]> \crlf I mention this because you may encounter something other than #1 .. #9 in error reports or tracing. (2) interception of unmatched delimiters If you define macros like \def\foo[#1=#2]{...} the brackets and equal had better be there. However there is some trickery in the macro parsing that can be used to intercept cases where they are missing: optional tokens as well as forcing end of scanning (so if you see \ignorearguments and \ifarguments in the code, that is what we're talking about: premature quitting and checking why that happened and acting upon it: less hackery is needed but then of course also less possibility to 'show off how clever one is wrt writing obscure macros' ... so be it. Both (1) and (2) are relatively lightweight extensions that are downward compatible as well as have no impact on performance. We don't expect them to be used at the user level (where one seldom defines macros anyway) but we apply them in some low level macros (and might apply them more). One can measure better performance but only when applied millions of times which is seldom the case in context (we're often more talking thousands there than millions of expansions). (3) There is some more 'matching token sequences' code that is being applied stepwise but again this is normally not seen at the user level. It sometimes permits cleaner fully expandable solutions. (4) There are some additional if tests but these are already around for quite a while and probably went unnoticed anyway. (5) Nested conditions can be flattened by using \orelse and that's what happens now in quite some places in the lmtx code (it's already there for a quite a while and kind of well tested). Again this leads to less tracing, can in priniciple be more efficient, but also demands less multiple expand after situations. It also just looks nicer. (6) Upcoming code can use some more (simplified) grouping magic but that is something we need to test more (which is what we are doing now). \blank space at the top of a page

Hello list I have been trying to find a solution to how to insert blank lines before a chapter heading at the start of a page. In the following example the \blank[4*big] is ignored. The solution I've found is to add an empty box using \mbox{} before the \blank command. Is this the right way to do it or is there a more elegant way that I am missing? E.g. //[id="Foo_3"] would find a node at depth 2 (assuming <opa> is at level 0) while //[id=“Fuzz_2"] would find a node at depth 3 and in either cases I would like to get that number (2 or 3) as well as the actual node. I can assume the values for ‘id’ are unique. I was wondering how I could go about finding the ‘depth’ of an item in the XML when using the LMTX built-in functions to work with XML. I don’t think there is a default function for that, is there? G

Hello I've followed the instructions on the Context Garden wiki to make use of a different font. Unfortunately when using \dotfill the dots do not show up. My minimal example is below. I think this might be because \dotfill takes its dots from the math mode font which I have not set up correctly. Filter module for R

Hi, Following a question about the broken R module (R the statistical software), Aditya suggested me the filter module (thanks to him). I’m about to distribute a set of course notes to colleagues, and I need to deal with details now. I have one problem and two questions. 1) the filter collect R code between \startR / \stopR and submit this code to R. As it can be seen in the following minimal example, when a label contains an accented character (« Fréquence » in my example), the pdf graphic does not contains the « é ». Strangely, the snippet of code (which is saved locally as « test2-temp-R-0.tmp » (for test2.tex)) when submitted with the same command as the filtercommand, works correctly; that means the same file works when submitted to R outside of ConTeXt. I have no idea how to solve this. 2) In a teaching context, we may want sometimes to show the code. The filter module actually permits to show the output of the code submitted to R (which can include or not the input commands); would it be possible to typeset the submitted code ? 3) Finally, using "R CMD BATCH… » as the filtercommand add an extra line at the end of the output file which can be typeset to visualize results. Would it be possible by a magic trick to deleter the last line of the file ? issue with remote \attachment

Hi Hans, one of my documents uses \attachment to embed PDF documents (well, it contains many). I have been doing this for more than a year, but right now it is way slower: over 250s vs. 7s compilation time (with and without the attachment). It takes me 6s to download the document directly with curl using the same address. I’m afraid this might be also related to the server where the file is downloaded from. The document seems to be downloaded in each run. I wonder whether this could be improved with these proposals: 1. Only download the document on the first run of each compilation. 2. Before that, check last modified information (from "curl -I") and avoid downloading if the already downloaded file is newer that the remote version. 3. It would be better if downloaded files could have the remote time ("curl -R"), instead download time. CreationDate and ModDate might differ from upload time. Bar within math (amended)

Hello, it seems that bar (even with option 'continue=yes') is not rendered in place of '~' within math. Is there a way to make the bar be rendered in places of blanks within math, too (like if it was inside $ ... $ - as the first line of the sample)? - Note that I can use \inframed to get background filled fully, but anyway - how about usage of "bar" for this? Consulting the mailing list, I thought the following code was working, but it’s not ! using annotations for extended print handling

Dear list, I have an over a thousand pages document generated with ConTeXt. I need to print and chapters and part of chapters (or send to other people). /PrintPageRange is great (and you can even generate a new document containing only the pages in /PrintPageRange). But the issue here is that I would need to recompile the document again for each new required /PrintPageRange. Another approach would be to add PDF annotations (outside page boundaries) to store the desired information. So I created text annotations (using \comment) with author information composed from unit number (such as "i3", "ii9" or "iii28"), info on the unit part (such as "-explanation", "-synopsis", "-exercises", or others) and position ("-start" and "-stop"). This would make author fields such as "i3-start" (which has a corresponding "i3-stop", or "ii22-synopsis-start" (with the corresponding closing annotation). To make easier to identify these annotations, they all share the same title. As contents, all these text annotations have the page number. From the generated PDF document, I need to read all text annotations in order to extract two fields from those annotations that contain a "whatever" /Subj. These fields are /T and /Contents. I guess that the way to deal with the (over 700) annotations would be to store both fields in a Lua table. But this is only a suspicion, since I don’t know how to read the values, how to store them, or how to compare them with specific units or unit parts to get these page numbers. I mean, with a command such as \extractpages{i5,i8-exercises,i15-explanation} would get the pages for each "-start" and "-stop" that could be passed automatically to a \filterpages command. Problem with Hello-World.tex

Hello everyone, I am quite new to ConTEXt, and after installed it according to the following web page : https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installation <https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installation> I’ve installed it in macOS Catalina 10.15.5. After a successful installation (I hope), I tried to run the “First Run!” part, so I’ve downloaded the file Hello-World.tex file (via wget), and I’ve run the command “context Hello-World.tex”. I’ve attached the resulting PDF, and it looks great, except for one part, which is the figure and the text flowing around it, which is not the case here. Is there something wrong in what I’ve done? I mean, I’ve done a fresh installation, download of Hello-World.tex and run the context command. Wrong page numbers in frontmatter

Hi, I'm not sure why the following MWE produces a document where page 2 has the page number i instead of ii. It seems to have something to do with the use of makeup. I was using it to create a vertically centered title page. Is there a better way of doing this which will give the correct page numbers? Hi, in the latest luametatex version, \the\font does ... something weird: E.g. with a current, fully updated lmtx, I get for \starttext \showthe\font \stoptext the output > }\ifempty \currentstyleparameter \else \dousecurrentstyleparameter \fi instead of the expected > \3>modern-designsize-12pt-rm-tf-0--0 (or similar) (given that this contains an unmatched `}`, it causes havoc if \the\font is used in unsuspecting macro code.) Asymptote and lmtx

Hi all, Recently I have been using (in a very elementary way) Metafun in order to visualize a small set of data in 2 dimensions, as a scattered set of labeled dots, and I wanted to do the same in 3 dimensions. Indeed one can write an analogous Metafun code for 3d, but I thought using Asymptote is more efficient. I saw that there is a module m-asymptote.mkiv in the distribution, but typesetting that file with lmtx or mkiv does not give the expected result. Has anyone a working example of using Asymptote from within ConTeXt, from which I could begin to learn? Thanks for any hint: Otared

Extra space when \setcharacterkerning is used in enumeration

Hi, I noticed an extra space in an enumeration when using \setcharacterkerning in the \headstyle parameter. The extra space appears before the first word "Sats", and in my case it is unwanted (In the example I want the word Sats to align with a), b), ...). The space was not there a year ago, with the same code. In the test file below (sorry for its length), the environment sats is having the problem, while SATS does not. The only difference is in the \headstyle parameter. Changed behavior of ^^ in csname

Hi, I noticed that in the latest LMTX version, ^^ (with ^ of catcode 7) is no longer interpreted inside csnames. Is this intentional? Draft Watermark of Garden gives unexpected results

The following example of using layers doesn't works as expected in ConTeXt https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Draft_Watermark The watermark is partially outside the page, whereas the Wiki result is more "centered". Dear list members, I tried to install ConTeXt on my Rock64 single board computer, which has an arm64 processor. On March 10, 2020, Hans Hagen wrote on the list: ... Mojca and I decided to support yet another platform, this time arm 64 bit for which we use a raspberry pi running ubuntu 64 bit, which brings the platforms supported by the build bot to 15:... On the Install page of ConTeXt garden I found ARM 64b as one of the options. So after downloading and extracting I ran the install.sh script. It gave me the error: Your system linux aarch64 is not supported (yet). You can ask on the ConTeXt mailing-list: ntg-context(a)ntg.nl. Funny radicals in LMTX

Interaction references with Reference List and Bibliography

Hi, When I try to create a "Reference List" (for cited references in the document) followed by a "Bibliography" (for the rest of literature, not cited) I get wrong references linked back in the document when citing a reference multiple times, although the citation in the text is always fine. See MWE: --- \setupinteraction[state=start] \usebtxdataset[sample.bib] \usebtxdefinitions[apa] \starttext \input tufte \cite[hh2010a] \input zapf \cite[hh2010a] \title{Reference List} \placelistofpublications[criterium=all] \title{Bibliography} \placelistofpublications[method=dataset] \stoptext --- Publications taken from (https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Sample_bib) as sample.bib. The outcome is correctly cited (Hagen, 2010a) including the interaction to the reference list, but the second citation is also linked to the first item in the bibliography Eijkhout, V. (1991) rather than the reference list entry again. If I cite the item again, then the second item in the bibliography is referenced and so on. "aps" doesn't seem to create an interactive back reference, so the issue is only with "apa". Is this because I mix both references and bibliography with placelistofpublications? Any other way to achieve this keeping interaction links in place? Thanks, Adam

Hi all, I just noticed that in lmtx, the commands \startplacefigure and \startframedtext, when used together, do not behave in the same way as they do in mkiv. I wonder whether this is a permanent change or rather a buglet. I found a fix around the issue, but since in my document I have a certain number of cases where such combinations are used, I woul dlike to be sure to not make a mistake by changing all the instances… Here is an example: %% begin figure-framedtext.tex \useMPlibrary[dum] \defineexternalfigure[dummy] \starttext \startplacefigure[location=left,number=no,title={}] \externalfigure[dummy][width=.45\textwidth] \stopplacefigure \dontleavehmode % if this is commented out then the text and the figure are placed on top of each other \startframedtext[frame=off] \input ward.tex \stopframedtext \stoptext %% end figure-framedtext.tex In the above example the fix is to add \dontleavehmode between the figue and the framedtext. My efforts to set up a new page counter in the footertexts of a book are not proving successful. Hi, I uploaded a new version. There have been no changes to the typesetting machinery although we're still in the process of finetuning some updated low level macros. There was a fix in the font machinery (thanks to Kai) but that will probably go unnoticed as the issue has been there for years. Now, that doesn't mean that nothing has been changed. First of all there is a new data related mechanism. After Wolfgang had updated the definition files it became official. It was on the agenda for a while but finally a nice solution surfaced. The new thing is luatables that obey grouping. The datavalue macro you see there can be used to create massive amounts of numeric variable independent of counters, not that we really need it, but it was very cheap to implement. At the engine level there also have been some changes but these should not be visible for users. We just mention: - extensions to the macro definition and expansion mechanisms (for instance optional arguments, optional delimiters, and silent error recovery; there will be some explanation in the evenmore document and at some point - when stable - in the manual) .. this permits some cleaner low level code; only things were done that had no impact on performance (as macro definition and expansion is used a lot) and didn't make the code messy (it actually became cleaner) - some additional substring (ok, tex has no string, just tokens) parsing capabilities with optional tokens, which again permits a bit cleaner low level code - a slightly reorganized handling of tokens (one of tex's basic data structures) in the lua token interface so that we get a more meaningful and robust subsystem (basically getting rid of funny numbers) ... this also will be discussed in an evenmore chapter .. not that users need it (i think) - as a side effect (or necessity) some low level recoding (and abstraction) had to happen but as far as we can see it works ok (i admit it was a slow, tedious job with lots of intermediate testing on the suite to make sure nothign was broken) .. in the end it was all doable because most of the preparation was already done over the last years - in the process we got rid of a traditional tex data structure that was left over from the 32 bit times but no longer needed in our 64 bit luatex/luametatex universe (i might backport that simplification to luatex some day) ... it discards some checking and saves the same amount of memory that we had on the early day pc's (where we ran whole tex jobs in that amount) Of course ... all kind of small improvenments ... hopefully for the best, Hans ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | www.pragma-ade.nl | www.pragma-pod.nl -----------------------------------------------------------------

About vertical typesetting in ConTeXt

Hi list! I'm curious about vertical typesetting in ConTeXt. As far as I know, LuaTeX supports four text directions, but LTL is broken for Manchu script (letters are displayed unjoined in LTL mode) and LuaMetaTeX does not support vertical directions anymore, at least as primitives. accessing xml element attributes in lua, how, if you do not want to use the .at scheme?

I’ve been trying to find out how I can access XML node properties/attributes in lua other than via the .at syntactic scheme but using the property/attribute name as a string. E.g., currently I do: someVar = someNode.at.someProperty but I would like to do something like someVar = someNode[“someProperty”] or someNode.attribute(“someProperty”) or something where I can use the string version of the properties/attribute name. It’s probably possible (after all these are all dynamic structures that come from data), but how exactly? Thanks, G

Bug in lmtx or wrong setup?

Hi all, I encountered a very strange problem. I want to have section headlines expanding the whole textarea, but the following copy text of the section shall be typeset in columns. I have this setup and it works fine. \setuphead [section] [ insidesection=\startcolumns, aftersection=\stopcolumns, ] Except for one big problem. ConTeXt (current lmtx from 2020.05.18 16:50) sometimes has problems to make a page break. And I get the weird result shown on the attached screenshot. After the page break the text of the section does not continue. Instead a number is shown. In the log file I can't find something suspicious. When I compile the source with current context (2020.01.30 14:13) I get something like an infinite loop. ConTeXt hangs and has to be killed with kill pid, Ctrl-C in terminal does not work So, in my opinion my layout or setup causes a bad situation, where ConTeXt does not know where to make a page break. While context hangs and warns me, lmtx runs smoothly but places a number in the text, which is bad as I might overlook it. I tried to make mwe but I cannot reproduce the error. Any ideas to improve my setup? Is this a bug or the intended behaviour? juh

chapter numbers

I am attempting to get the word 'Chapter' to appear in the Chapter title, followed by its number, and I attempted to do it simply with: \setupheadtext[chapter=Chapter] \setuphead [chapter] [header=empty] What I get is simply the number, e.g. 1 My first chapter, 2 My second chapter etc. \setupheadtext is being ignored. problem since previous versions

A problem has arisen up since previous versions, where code without a problem now raises an error. errors in margindata?

I gues there are errors in \margindata. See the minimal example. The contextversion is fresh loaded just before this test. (1) \margindata{test} gives an error. The log message is: tex error > tex error on line 9 in file ./margindata.tex: ! Use of \typo_margins_data_yes doesn't match its definition l.9 \margindata{ text1}% One has to use \margindata[]{test} to avoid the error. Setup left, right, between entries in custom cite of multiple references

I'm trying to customise \cite and unable to get inbetween= to appear between entries in a multi-ref citation. My own customisations via a copy of publ-imp-apa.mkvi and .lua have this problem, so in case it was due to my customisation I went back to solid ground — the Chemistry example, pp. 70-74 in the Publications manual (http://pragma-ade.nl/general/manuals/mkiv-publications.pdf) The cite examples on p.74 work as shown, but when I add each of the following: \cite [name][108-95-2,566-33-5]\par \cite [formula][108-95-2,566-33-5]\par \cite [chemical][108-95-2,566-33-5]\par \cite [molarvolume][108-95-2,566-33-5,24599-57-3]\par I simply get the citation details, no separator between, and no left or right. Either of the following works for left= and right=. However inbetween= does not activate, and similarly for separator:2, separator:3, separator:4. \definebtx [chemistry:cite:formula] [left={\color[blue]{(}}, % the colour to differentiate from \setupbtx below right={\color[red]{)}}, inbetween={\btxcomma\btxspace}, % no effect ] \setupbtx [chemistry:cite:formula] [left={(}, right={)}, inbetween={\btxcomma\btxspace}, ] Grateful for any guidance as to how I can remedy this issue. Two issues with respect to sections in ConTeXt

First: I made the following question wrt swapping section labels and section numbers: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/547761/how-to-swap-section-labels-a… What I tried to do is the following section structure 1. Chapter (Name of chapter) 1. 2 Section (Name of section) Wolfgang Schuster offered the following solution for chapters in Spanish, thanks :) \setuplabeltext[es][chapter={, capítulo}] However, I asked if there is a way to use predefined section labels according to chapters, sections, parts, etc. e.g. Chapter (EN) or Capítulo (ES) without manually writing a \setuplabeltext for every language, so he suggested that I move my question here and there we are. Second: The TeX command \S (section mark) seems to be insensitive to font size commands. I've tried with \setuphead[section][sectionstarter=\S] And the sign is smaller than the surrounding letters. I thought it was a matter of font design, but I've tried \setuphead[section][sectionstarter=§] And it worked. My question is: why? Is it a bug or a feature with respect to \S? I'm using ConTeXt MKIV version 2020.05.25 23:39 with LuaTeX Thank you in advance Jairo :D

Installing Modules with ConTeXt LMTX

I want to try the t-letter module. I have a fresh install of ConTeXt LMTX from today. The page https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules has sections "Installation by hand" and "ConTeXt standalone", but no section on ConTeXt LMTX. The section on ConTeXt standalone mentions a --modules switch to first-setup.sh in order to include modules. This cannot work with the install.sh from ConTeXt LMTX, as it does not pass any command line arguments to mtxrun. install.sh does have an empty by default variable LMTXEXTRAS at the top, which is passed as --extras="$LMTXEXTRA" to bin/mtx-install.lua near the bottom of the script. However, setting LMTXEXTRAS=t-letter seems to not work. Searching through the bin/mtx-install.lua for "modules" and "extras" reveals that most probably neither flag is handled at all. However, the helpinfo variable in bin/mtx-install.lua does mention the modules flag, but not the extras flag. Is there a way to install modules in ConTeXt LMTX not by hand?

reduced space below chapter title

Hi list, I am attempting to achieve, for every second chapter, to have only one line of space between the chapter title and the text that follows. I looked at the following example in the wiki: \setuppapersize[A6][A6] \setupbodyfont[8pt] \def\MyChapterCommand#1#2% {\vbox to 4cm\bgroup {#1\hskip.75em #2} \vss \egroup} \setuphead[chapter][header=nomarking, command=\MyChapterCommand] \starttext \chapter{test} \input tufte \stoptext and presumed that I could adjust that to something like 1cm instead of 4cm. The problem is that when I try to process the original example, I get a fatal error at the line which reads \chapter{test} \input tufte. I'm not sure why that error, but that aside, would the \def\MyChapterCommand approach suggested above be the right way to achieve my purpose? In other words, I want the text that follows the chapter title to follow immediately for specific chapters, rather than the considerable vertical space that follows the default setup for chapter titles. spacing between chapters in TOC

Hi list, I want my table of contents to look like: Chapter 1 section 5 section 10 section 15 In other words with section items indented. I presumed I would need to do something with \setuplist[section]. I know how to control interline distance, whitespace, but in this instance, not indentation of certain lines in a toc. I tried \setuplist[section][indenting=yes] and even indentation=yes in the hope that existed. It doesn't, at least not used this way. But it must be simple enough to achieve? Julian

Hi, I finally wanted to attack CG journal 2019 again and stumble upon this error: If an article contains several \starttyping ... \stoptyping examples with a textbackground, it sometimes fills the whole column (pagecolumns). It doesn’t occur if the "typing" is at top or bottom of the column or even breaks. It’s the same with MkIV and LMTX. I’ll try to come up with a MWE, but perhaps you already know what’s wrong? status of t-rst

Hello, yesterday when browsing new ConTeXt site (yay!!) I found about the existance of 't-rst' to be used for typesetting files written in reST markup. However the referenced web site (https://bitbucket.org/phg/context-rst/src/default/) shows last activity 6yrs ago, so wonder if it is still relevent today or obsolete? The static-site-generator (Nikola) which I use for web stuff has good support for rst markup, so just wonder(ed) if I could continue using it for short stuff which *might* become typeset with ConTeXt one day? Nikola does support using Markdown markup as well and it's usually possible to do rst --> md by e.g. using Markdown, but just wonder... Dear List, After staying with a frozen MKIV version for time-critical work for a while, I took the plunge and ran one of my longer math-heavy documents through LMTX. To my delight, it mostly looks fine or trivially fixable. There is one problem I have with enumerations. The spacing between them in LMTX is notoriously smaller than in MKIV. On Windows (I’m still on Win7), it doesn’t work unless I replace "ξ" with an ASCII character. Could this be fixed or is it really a limiatation of Windows? Is there a way to make the bar be rendered in places of blanks within math, too (like if it was inside $ ... $ - as the first line of the sample)? Or is there a better way to add an unbroken background to a (part of) math expression followed by a text (unit)? Best regards, Lukas

Today I wanted to try LMTX and I have found these instructions in the wiki: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installing_ConTeXt_LMTX_on_MacOS Rather than disabling SIP, I have proceeded as follows: 1. Download macOS's version of LMTX from https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installation 2. Unpack 3. cd context-osx-64 4. xattr -d com.apple.quarantine bin/mtxrun 5. sh ./install.sh Point 4 is important to avoid the dialog "mtxrun cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." Of course, it would be better if the binary were signed... Nicola

Math delimiters across math alignment environments

Hi dear list! I have a question about the use of delimiters. There are commands as \left ... \right which allow delimiters of variable size, but they are usually asymmetrical. AFAIK, ConTeXt has mechanisms of the form \definemathfence[something][something][command=yes]. My question is: is it possible to make math fences work in a math alignment, e.g. \definemathfence[something][brace][command=yes] \startformula \startmathalignment[n=2,align={middle,middle}] %This won't work (I didn't expected to work, anyway) \NC \NC \something{\frac{1}{2} + \NR \NC \NC x} \NR \stopmathalignment \stopformula so that the fences are the same size? Hello, is it possible to check whether a macro exists (or - is it a non-\undefined control sequence) with Lua?
