Hello again, I need to place several figures side by side (e.g. pictures of persons). I know I can use combinations, but I need the figures with captions included in the usual numbering of figures and not one number & caption for the combination. How can I achieve this? Best, Hraban

context --luatex does not redirect to LuaTeX

Hi again! When context --luatex is used with current version: 2020.08.07 23:37 LuaMetaTeX is still used. --engine=luatex has no effect, either. Is that a bug? Thanks Cordially, Jairo :)

Hi Hans, Thanks for the hint which consists in adding an \ifmmode to the definition of \qed. Dear all! The 14th ConTeXt Meeting <https://meeting.contextgarden.net/2020/> is in preparation as originally planned. All pre-registered participants are still planning to attend the meeting. The situation is changing every day (mainly travel restrictions), so we have decided to hold the meeting in case the Czech Republic doesn't have red light in most of the countries in September and the number of participants doesn't drop below the critical number. We will not charge a cancellation fee to attendees, if their individual situation changes. In case the meeting is cancelled as a whole in the end, we will ask everybody registered (except students) to donate 20 € minimum to the ConTeXt Group <https://group.contextgarden.net> as sort of collective insurance. The collected money will be used as the cancellation payment to the hosting property. Abstracts <https://meeting.contextgarden.net/2020/abstracts.shtml> have been updated and registration <https://meeting.contextgarden.net/2020/register.shtml> is open until we reach full capacity. This MWE is an example of strange font behaviour according to the log and I do not understand what is causing it. ConTeXt complains "check count_components with mkiv" when the word 'suffi' is present (see log message below). Now comes the most strange: remove 'suffi' or shorten to 'suff' and the message goes away. I have put the full set of files inside the zip. dr. Header bottom line vanishing after 87 pages

Hello good morning, I encounter a strange problem when compiling my project. The book has 252 pages, compilation runs without errors. But after 87 pages the bottom frame of the header is turned off. The \setupbackgrounds command is given only once in the preamble. — So I am curious what that can be. I tried to reproduce the problem by a simple 255 page loop, but there the issue does not appear. There is no difference between MKIV and LMTX, no difference in older version and yesteray evening’s version of ConTeXt. My question is whether anybody has an idea how to track down this issue. Placing a section ending depending on odd/even sectionnumber

Hi, now I have another hurdle to be taken :-) — Depending on the odd or even number of the section I have to place an ornament at the end of the section. Hi, list. I've found a (sort of) way to do LTL typesetting in Lua(La)TeX based on "chickenize", a LuaTeX package. Hi, me again... Is there a check if a macro is called from inside of a footnote, like a system mode *footnote? (Same with captions?) In my current project, index entries should get italic page numbers if they occurr inside of a footnote (or a caption, but that is rare). I’m using different shortcuts for both cases (that call \index with or without processor), but some paragraphs are very confusing (many long footnotes, or footnotes within footnotes), and I could avoid manually analyzing the structure if my macro could determine on its own if it’s called from a footnote. \fontdimen in LuaMetaTeX

Hi, recent LuaMetaTeX versions no longer automatically resize the fontdimen arrays on assignments. Is there a way to manually resize them or is it necessary to reload a patched font you want more fontdimens? Hi Hans, A file which used to be typeset correctly with the previous versions of lmtx, now produces an error. Despite the error message being extremely cryptic: Error ! Missing number, treated as zero I could guess the origin of the bug, which seems to be \wordright, but although the following minimal example shows a bug it does not produce the same ERROR output page: %%%% the square ''end of proof'' \definesymbol[Fin][\mathematics{\square}] \def\qed{\wordright{\symbol[Fin]}} \starttext \startformula a^2 + b^2 = c^2 \stopformula \qed % the problem is here \stoptext In the above example if one adds something before \qed, then the square end-of-proof appears. lmtx update

Hi, Sorry for the long mail ... One of the changes in lmtx is that we freeze the properties that determine the paragraph shape as well as breaking into lines in such a way that we have predictable behaviour. As a side effect it can be that existing code (lmtx only) will behave differently (will be fixed when we notice) but also that some low level user tweaking can not work, i.e. they are just ignored, but only when they happen mid paragraph which actually is always debatable anyway. Now, if for some reasom you get unexpected results and can't wait for a fix, you can do this: \forgetparagraphfreezing : disables \setparagraphfreezing : enables (default) Of course it might have other side effects once in lmtx we everywhere expect freezing to be enabled. You can take a snapshot with: \freezeparagraphproperties : snapshot relevant parameters \defrostparagraphproperties : resets snapshot More efficient is snapshotting a subcategory: \updateparagraphproperties : all \updateparagraphpenalties : only penalties \updateparagraphdemerits : other than penalties \updateparagraphshapes : hangindent etc Don't use the low level commands that they use because we take plenty of time to experiment at that level and interfaces might evolve, for instance: \frozen\hangindent 30pt \frozen\hangafter 2 is valid and will likely stay. We're talking of a conceptually rather different approach. Internally the engine is still doing the same things but we can control it a bit differently. Due to the way ConTeXt is set up, we can make such a paradigm shift without too much troubles. I'll wrap up more details in an article later. Other work in progress is: better columns in itemize, esp proper footnote support (not that I ever need that but I know users do so ...), experiments work ok, but I need to check spacing. In general, footnotes (will) behave a bit better, especially those used nested in other mechanisms. A side effect of more control is that we can do other tricks too and we're playing with it (kind of fun). More work in progress concerns paragraph wrappers and that will result in a rewrite of some existing mechanism (generic subsystems with instances), but that might as well go unnoticed. To give an idea of possibilities, here is an example: \definedescription[whatever][alternative=right:bottom] \startwhatever{just a small\\example} \input ward \stopwhatever No one ever requested it so see it an a quick and dirty example but don't hesitate to ask for more anyway (we like an occasional challenge). Hi, besides the CG journal I’m working on a scientific biography with huge person and locality indexes (named Person and Locality for the examples). In many cases, the author wants additional information in the index, e.g. \Locality{Altona (Hamburg)} \Locallity{Breslau (pol. Wrocław)} or \Person{Arends, Katharina (née Schoemaker)} \Person{Wilhelm II. (Kaiser)} Now, I need that consistent and I don’t want to type these complicated entries every time. I’m looking for a good way to handle this – maybe a lookup table in Lua, so that \LookupPerson{Willy II} would call a Lua function that returns \Person{Wilhelm II. (Kaiser)} ? Or is there already something in place that I overlooked, like \OverwriteIndexEntry{Hraban}{Ramm, Henning Hraban} ? Hraban

This works except that the ornament is in some cases placed on the next page. — My question is whether it is possible to do a \testpage and evaluate the result hereof and then using either the placement of the ornament and stop the section or just end the section without ornament? Installing VSCode extension?

I am installing the Windows version of ConTeXt, which comes with a VSCode extension, in <ConTeXt>\tex\texmf-context\context\data\vscode\extensions with instructions to run (from within the VSCode terminal): code -- extensions-dir <above directory> -- install-extension context The trouble is that the current ConTeXt installation (as of 65 minutes ago), doesn't seem to contain an extension in the format that VSCode understands. Running that command produces the errors: Installing extensions... Extension 'context' not found. Make sure you use the full extension ID, including the publisher, e.g.: ms-dotnettools.csharp Failed Installing Extensions: context: For what it's worth, I'm running VSCode 1.46.0. Lua related change in LuaMetaTeX?

Hi, starting with LuaMetaTeX 2.07.01, a C library I load from Lua started to segfault and valgrind indicates that it accesses invalid memory in multiple places in the middle of Lua internal functions?! The whole thing looks almost like the Lua versions in LuaMetaTeX and in the library are incompatible, but both seem to use 5.4.0. So I asked myself if there might be changes not reflected by the version number. tl;dr: Has the embedded Lua interpreter changed in some non ABI-compatible way in LuaMetaTeX 2.07.01? (Especially on Linux, x86-64. I didn't test other platforms yet) Best regards, Marcel

Hi, Normally we don't report on successive loe level improvements in the engine or the core of context (we do so in articles and wrapups), and much goes unnoticed anyway (which is good). But ... the last couple of weeks we have been playing with some adapted functionality in lmtx and some of the experimental low level code has now made it in core. Normally users will not notice this but who knows. There are already features in lmtx that are not (and are unlikely to be) in mkiv (most significant in the metapost related part). When possible new macros and additions to mechanism will be in both mkiv and lmtx, but lmtx users will be better off in the end. We're mostly talking of the more tricky mechanisms here, those that currently have limitations due to all kind of possible interferences. To summarize: mkii : frozen (seldom patches) lmtx : cutting edge mkiv : when possible following lmtx, otherwise frozen Because we develop lmtx and luametatex alongside it is no problem if we have experimental (and even temporary imperfect) code in the engine: context knows about it and especially with experiments, we try to make sure it doesn't hit users (who we don't expect to use those, often undocumented, new tricks anyway). It's sometimes the only way to go forward (stepwise testing). So, here is an example of where lmtx can do better than mkiv: \placefigure[left]{}{} \input ward \par \placefigure[left]{}{} {\bf \input ward} \par Another area is in using footnotes. As a first step to more robust handling of deeply nested notes, lmtx now defaults to (the more than a decade optional in mkiv) \automigrateinserts, but with less overhead (for performance reasons, it was never enabled in mkiv, apart from occasional side effects). It is features like these that will stepwise be improved, at least that is what we hope for. So, the current upload has some new stuff, hopefully without too many side effects, but if so, we'll deal with it as usual. As a result, the latest lmtx could be a little slower, but I wonder if someone will notice it in practice. The metadata does not get set properly, having to do with expansion or other notions of TeX that I never seem to get right. What might be the proper way of handling this? Thank you Alan

Hans, as Garulfo mentioned in a previous message (https://mailman.ntg.nl’t /pipermail/ntg-context/2020/098826.html), French may require that all paragraphs are indented (no matter what comes before the paragraph). Spanish also requires that. How about a key for "indentnext" in \setuplanguage? That makes it easier to have documents that require all "indentnext" keys set to "yes". Hi everybody I am a current context user since now many years and in particular I use it on linux with automatic compilation with a bash script detecting any modifications of the .tex file. In order for this to work I used with previous versions the "--nonstopmode --batchmode --silent --noconsole" compilation options. With these options with a new error in the .tex files with old versions of mkiv the previous pdf produced was not changed. Now with lmtx, appears a single page pdf file with ERROR written on it. Are there compulations options with lmtx in order to have something similar as before ? Any ideas ? Thanks

Using variables and macros for styling of section title and line in table of contents

Dear list I have a document with section headings which include a title, date and reference spread over two lines with different font style and justification, plus a slightly different text for the table of contents. So that I can alter the styling of the section headings without having to recode each \startsection command, I have used variables and a macro command for the style. This works for section 'title' and 'marking', but not for the 'list' attribute. The minimal working example below shows what I'm trying to do. Best wishes and many thanks in advance. No inverse Search when using \usepath

Hello List, Greetings to all members! This is my first post here... Relatively new in Context, I've loved it since the first minute! I write technical manuals with Context. Some chapters of the manuals are depending on the type of the machine which are described in the manual. I try to use \usepath to load the right texfile from different folders. My variable for searching the correct folder is \machinename. \machinename is set before compiling The folders are: /MakeText/Ang/machineA/techdaten/Ang_techdaten.tex /MakeText/Ang/machineB/techdaten/Ang_techdaten.tex ... /MakeText/Ang/machineX/techdaten/Ang_techdaten.tex Tex example: \usepath[/MakeText/Ang/\machinename/] .... \input /techdaten/Ang_techdaten.tex \input /otherfolder/otherfile.tex \input... I can compile and I get a nice PDF, but the inverse search is not possible. (I use Sumatra and Notepad++) NPP only looks at the path after \input... /techdaten/Ang_techdaten.tex Do any of you know a workaround for this? Is \usepath the suited command? Thank you in advance! Bug in latest LMTX

Hi Hans, It seems that \cap is not anymore defined in the latest LMTX: the following gives an error \starttext $A \cap B$ \stoptext with current version: 2020.07.21 18:39. Also, I would like to place a request about the reporting of errors: can we get back the nice reporting of errors we had a few months ago? Indeed while a few months ago the reporting of errors was extremeley clear and helpful, now one gets a cryptic message like this in the html file produced: Error ! Missing } inserted File chapitre-1.tex Line 834 Of course there is no missing } error in that file and that line, and one has to spend a lot of time to find what the error would be. In this case I could guess that the error comes from the fact that \cap is not defined, but it wasn't easy (the file used to typeset correctly with version 2020.07.13, and it typesets correctly with mkiv). In eralier versions, ConTeXt would tell the user undefined control sequence \cap and one could fix things very quickly. Best regards, and please pardon my early morning request… Otared

issue with current latest (2020.07.20)

Dear list, with current latest (LuaTeX 2.06 20200717 + ConTeXt MkIV 2020.07.20 10:48), I cannot open luametatex.pdf (its SHA256 reads cff8b660b65f4f8c121c170bcd59545c5467a7db02614da137e622ef1c5f3964). Acrobat for Linux complains about malformed document and Evince doesn’t display anything. Latest mupdf-gl complains about broken xref (mupdf complains too): error: cannot recognize xref format warning: trying to repair broken xref warning: repairing PDF document I experience issues in Windows with current latest: \starttext \input zapf \stoptext The output PDF document opens in SumatraPDF fine. Using the following: \margindata{some macro expansions} I know that \margindata is typeset at a later moment than its place in the code suggests. The problem is that macro expansions inside the {}'s are expanded twice. This interferes badly with the things I want to happen. Tracing what happens, I conclude that the result of the first expansion is lost and is not carried into the actual placement of the marginnote. The question this is: how to solve this problem? dr. Hi list! I've tried context --ctx=s-mod with some files, e.g. t-annotation and I only get corrupted PDF files. Chapter numbering that does not follow a regular pattern

Hi there, I have a situation where numbered chapters are occasionally interspersed with unnumbered chapters, so, for example, it might be: 1 First chapter title with number second chapter title unnumbered 2 Second chapter title with number 3 Third chapter title with number ----------- Now, I can achieve what I want by putting something like the following for a 'normal' chapter (by which I mean one that needs to be numbered, but would otherwise be out of sequence): \chapter[title={\sc My chapter title that needs a different number},ownnumber=2] And in the case of the interspersed 'other' chapter (that is, the one that follows Chapter 1 numbered, still needs a title, but no number, and therefore breaks the normal number increment), I define 'mychapter' in the initial setup, then: \mychapter[title={\sc MY UNNUMBERED CHAPTER TITLE},number=no] ----------- But I was wondering if there was a way that I could achieve the result I want in the initial setup for the two different kinds of chapters. If it were a regular pattern, e.g. 1 chapter, unnumbered chapter, 2 chapter, unnumbered chapter, that might be easier to do, but in the situation I am dealing with, there is not this regularity. You may well tell me that since I can achieve what I want as described above, that should suffice. I will be happy to have that confirmed. On the other hand, someone may have a more elegant suggestion in the initial setup that enables me to call in the specific kind of chapter I need at the time in a simpler way. Julian

Broken PDF with latest MkIV

Hi, I just installed the latest ConTeXt MkIV (LuaTeX 2.06 20200706 + ConTeXt MkIV 2020.07.09 14:51) to check if the CG journal will look the same as with my "old” installation (LuaTeX 1.11 7215 + ConTeXt MkIV 2020.01.30 14:13). All looks well in Preview.app and PDF Studio 2019, but Adobe (Reader DC and Acrobat Pro 9) can’t open the new PDF. I’ll try to cook up a MWE. Does anyone else experience problems with Adobe apps? error after Linux upgrade

Hi, After upgrading from Linux Mint 19.3 to 20, when attempting to run the context mydoc.tex command, I get the following messages: jel@mycomputer:~/Documents/Context_docs$ context mydoc.tex resolvers | caches | path '/home/jel/.texlive2019/texmf-var' created mtxrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' Obviously it needed to resolve a path issue and appears to have done so, but why did it choose .texlive2019/texmf-var? If I run 'locate context.lua' I get /home/jel/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/context.lua so how might I get Context to resolve to this latter? Julian

help with confusion re chapter number

Hi, I wonder if someone could lead me out of my current confusion. Space after Round bracket before Punctuation

I'm typesetting some proceedings which include a good number of round brackets followed by punctuation. This often occurs in the body of the text, but also in the hand coded bibliographies, e.g.: ) plus . , ; : The trouble is that excessive space is often introduced between the bracket and the punctuation. I can control the excessive space that sometimes occurs between ) and . by using )\periods[1], although this ruins the protrusion if it occurs at the end of a line. Does anyone know how I might be able to somehow "tie" ) to . , ; : so that the distance remains reasonable, and so that protrusion still works? lmtx install fails to run

After doing just now the standard: sh install.sh context will not run. Why, because in the past it worked without a hitch. Now there is no format cont-en. Did all sorts of the ususal things like remove the current cache, context --make en, etc. I guess the error is in the missing file. An overfsight somewhere? I thought if I added [before={\blank[2cm]}] somewhere in \framed (e.g. just before the {#1\\#2} argument, that I would achieve such a result, but that doesn't work. I also tried it as {\framed[frame=off,width=broad,align=middle,before={\blank[2cm]}]{#1\\#2}}, but that didn't work either. I am sure it is simple enough to achieve? Julian

Reading about macro bundles meant to be generic (format agnostic), some of them work in plain/LaTeX, but crash when loaded on ConTeXt. Bad interaction between \setupinteraction and \defineenumeration

However, the cross-reference does not work, even if the number of the enumeration is displayed correctly. The example fails both in LuaTeX and LuaMetaTeX. LMTX and soft links (Linux)

I'm using both LMTX from the ConTeXt standalone installation and a TeX Live installation. Since I'm using binaries from the standalone (and added LMTX to path, etc.), I created soft links in texmf-modules via ln -s /usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/tex ~/lmtx/tex/texmf-modules/tex and similar (lmtx is my directory for the standalone). LuaTeX finds files without any issues. However LuaMetaTeX gives the following error: runtime error : input file (name of file) is not found, quitting The same result is for modules, .sty files and .tex files. Is this intentional, a bug in LMTX, or is a better solution possible? In case it's useful, I'm working with Ubuntu 20.04. Thank you a lot. Jairo :)

ConTeXt source browser website update

Hi all, I just replaced the software of https://source.contextgarden.net/ by a Lua implementation that uses Hans Hagen’s SciTE lexers for syntax highlighting and a Lua-generated search index. There is no official documentation yet (because I may want to change some stuff still) but here is some relevant information: * The search field uses a Lua string pattern to match a single word (no multi-word search as of yet). See https://www.lua.org/manual/5.3/manual.html#6.4.1 for the syntax of lua string patterns. * The search index only contains 7-bit ASCII ‘words’ that contain at least one of 'a-zA-Z’ (writing an LPEG for unicode matching is a tricky and probably would be quite slow even if I could make it work). Still, this should be ok-ish because most of the ConTeXt source is ASCII, except for the interface files. * The files context-en.xml, mtxrun{.lua}, and all of the files in the tex/context/patterns subtree are skipped in the search index. Also skipped are words shorter than 3 bytes, lua keywords, and words having more than (approx) 1500 hits * On the plus side, because of the SciTE lexer, “contextversion’ and “\contextversion” are separate entries in the search index. And you can search for “\@@kldirection”. * For text file types that have no SciTE lexer there is no syntax highlighting, and binary files are ignored altogether. The rest of the interface should be self-explanatory. Suggestions for improvements are welcome. Index statistics: 4085 files processed, 178 skipped, 3744 with matches 120733 words found 119154 words exported to word.idx 37928 comment words found 36880 words exported to comment.idx 26756 documentation words found 26018 words exported to docs.idx The word.idx is roughly 11 megabytes. Multiple cases of unexpected behaviour in luametatex

Hi, I recently noticed some cases where luametatex behaved in unexpected ways: - The "Extra \fi" error isn't triggered, instead an extra `\fi` freezes luametatex. (Can be reproduced by compiling a document which only consists of a single \fi) - token.new can only create some `data` tokens, but it doesn't apply bound checking on it's arguments: Take ``` \directlua{ t = token.new(0x200000, token.command_id'data') print(t.cmdname, t.command, t.mode) } ``` which prints register 102 0 The issue does not seem to be that such tokens do not exists because \letdatacode\somedata="200000 \directlua{ local t = token.create'somedata' print(t.cmdname, t.command, t.index) } does print data 101 2097152 Also for all other commands LuaTeX seems to apply range-checks to ensure that such overflows don't happen, even if invalid values are passed as firstargument. - There is token.primitives(). My assumption is that the returned table is meant to indicate the command is, mode and name corresponding to every primitive. (I think it is awesome that such a table is made available in luametatex) But especially the mode field sometimes has values which do not correspond to the mode of the actual primitives: I tried running the following in an almost iniTeX setting where all primitives aside from \shipout and \Umathcodenum have their default definitions: ``` \catcode`\%=12 \catcode`\~=12 \directlua{ local sorted = token.primitives() table.sort(sorted, function(a,b) return a[1]<b[1] or a[1]==b[1] and a[2]<b[2]end) for _,info in ipairs(sorted) do local t = token.create(info[3]) local rc, rm = t.command, t.mode if rc==info[1] and rm ~= info[2] then if info[2] == 0 then print(string.format('MODE MISMATCH, expected zero: \string\\%s: real: %i, command: %i', info[3], rm, rc)) else print(string.format('MODE MISMATCH: \string\\%s: offset: %i, command: %i', info[3], rm-info[2], rc)) end elseif rc~=info[1] then print(t.csname) end end } ``` This indicates that there are two kinds of differences: For some command codes, there are multiple primitives whose second entry in the token.primitives table is zero even though their mode is not zero. This especially affects the commands `above`, `after_something`, `make_box`, `un_vbox`, `set_specification` and `car_ret`. E.g. for after_something, all of \atendofgrouped, \afterassigned and \aftergrouped have a zero as second entry in token.primitives. The other difference is that all the internal_... commands have a fixed offset which differes between commands in their mode field. IMO the difference for the internal_... commands make sense because they make for easier to use numbers, but having multiple primitives indicating mode 0 for the other commands seems to make this table significantly less useful because it can't be used to get a unique description of a primitive. (I may have completely misinterpreted the table of course, but given that for other primitives the values match I do not think so) Best regards, Marcel

Converting a CSV file to a Lua table and Lua file

Hi all, I have a bash script which converts a CSV file into a Lua table, which is then used in ConTeXt. It works fine, but I wonder whether there is a code within LuaMetaTeX for doing this directly there (writing a new file which contains the Lua table). This would be more efficient and neater. Thus a CSV file « example.csv » containing the lines: X,Y,Z 0.05597,0.6612,0.8618 0.156804,0.8784,0.961 0.496804,0.8784,0.9324 0.176804,0.648,0.9643 would be converted and wriiten into a lua file « example.lua » containing the lines: return{ -- {X,Y,Z}, {0.05597,0.6612,0.8618} {0.156804,0.8784,0.961} {0.496804,0.8784,0.9324} {0.176804,0.648,0.9643} } Thanks in advance for any help: Otared K.

overfull message

I would very much like to get rid of the overfull hbox messages in the log. They clutter the log and I have not much use for them Setting \hbadness to a large enough value should suppress them below the threshold. But this does not happen. Typesetting poetry with particular indenting

Hi everyone. I am typesetting a poetry text in triplets and I would like the second and third lines of each triplet to be indented (i.e., in the next example, verse no. 2, 3, 5, and 6). Is it possible to get what I ask for with ConTeXt?
