After making silly mistakes, for which I apologize, I finally got the ToC to work for frontmatter and chapters, creating new \defineheads as required, and including the earlier \ChapterListCommand, with the results correctly showing. To add some named sections with authors, I did the following, using an idea Hraban had floated: \setupsectionblock [bodypart] [number=no] \define[1]\SectionTocEntry{% #1\crlf% title \structurelistuservariable{author}% } \setuplist[section][ textcommand=\SectionTocEntry, ] I need to adjust the \setuplist[section] so these section entries move across under the Chapter titles (not be left-aligned as they are now under Chapter number. The earlier \ChapterListCommand has titles and authors moved across 3cm. I have tried: \setuplist[section][width=3cm, textcommand=\SectionTocEntry, ] The width=3cm is not doing anything, so I've got that wrong. How do I move sections across by a specific amount in the TOC? About font combination in ConTeXt MKIV

Dear friends: Until now (TeXLive 2018), to write Spanish and ancient Greek in the same document, I used the "simplefonts" module, which is said in the wiki (ConTeXt Garden) that it is obsolete. What is the method to do this with TeXLive 2020? I try to combine one font for Spanish text (eg libertine) and another for ancient Greek (eg New Athena Unicode), but I don't know how to do it without the "simplefonts" module, and if I try to compile the document with the "simplefonts module", I have an error Thank you. TeXlive 2020 / Gentoo Linux: ConTeXt does not find itself (sort of)...]

Hi, this is my first post to this mailinglist. I am no native speaker... if something sound somehow ... I will try to give my best.... ;) I am using GENTOO Linux, which compiles everything on the target instead of pulling ready compiled, binary packages into the system. I did a fresh install of Texlive 2020 via the package-manager "emerge". On Gentoo this is handled via a "virtual package", which can be configured beforehand to include or exclude certain parts. I choose to get the HUGE package (incluing LaTeX, ConTeXt, plainTeX and others). After the installation I tried to typeset examples of a LaTeX- and a plain TeX document, which works out of the box. Then I tried a ConTeXt document and it fails: context somefile.tex gave me: mtxrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' . While searching the internet I found, that one has to run mtxrun --generate in advance. Doing so mtxrun starts to index my whole harddisk starting with my $HOME, from which I started it. It reports A LOT of "confusing file"s.... I searched the installed TeXlive installation for context.lua and mtx-context.lua -- they were installed and not "totally" missing. So I tried/guessed to run mtxrun --generate /usr/share/texmf-dist /usr/share/texlive-site and the file under $HOME were no longer indexed. context somefile.tex gave me the above mentioned error still, though. It "feels" like context does not respect setting made via the configuration settings under /etc/texmf... So I "hacked" (really, it was a crude hack/idea...nothing more) TEXMF and inserted export TEXMF=/usr/share/texmf-dist:/usr/share/texlive-site into my shells RC-file, restarted the shell and now context somefile.tex "worked"...: Each time it seems to re-index parts of ???, reports a lot of "confusing file"s but creates a valid looking pdf. I think, the package setup provided by GENTOO has a problem I want to help to fix that...but I have no clue, what the real culprit is here... Setting TEXMF this way feels like a random and accidentally working hack and I already feel the next problem raising up at the horizon... Some additional problems: tlmgr does not work mtxrun partially does not find its own modules mtxrun --variables lists a LOT of unset environment variables ... It looks like some basic and fundamental "initial" environment variable is missing. But I need a knowledgeable guru before I am able to get nearer to the root of the culprit. Wrong page number when placefigure spans full page in columnset

Hi, When I place a figure within a columnset and that figure takes a full page then the page number in the header is incorrect. Page number is the same as the previous page but on the next page it's correct. Please see example below and attached showing page 2 twice with pages numbered 1, 2, 2, 4, 5. If I reduce the height of the figure (from 15 to 12cm for example), then some main text gets added on the page and page number (3) becomes correct. Is that a bug or am I doing something wrong? Dear list, I am using ConTeXt LMTX Version 2020.09.05 21:18 with an input file named, e.g., "test.test.tex". When compiling, ConTeXt generates files "test.log", "test.tua", "test.pdf". ConTeXt MKIV used to produce files "test.test.log", "test.test.tua", "test.test.pdf". Is there a way for ConTeXt LMTX to process input files that contain full stops consistently? I am aware of the "--result=..." option, but what about the "...tua", "...log" and synctex files? This is a serious problem when running multiple compilations in parallel, e.g., on "test.a.tex" and "test.b.tex", because both processes use the same "test.tua" file. Cheers, Christoph

Now that with Hraban's invaluable assistance I am able to include title, subtitle, author as and when necessary in the ToC and put them on the same line if I need to, I have two questions that I have not found a satisfactory solution to after playing around with various possibilities. I need: (1) the author's names lined up vertically throughout the ToC, and (2) the first part of the entry (e.g. Foreword) to be bold, but the author name to be regular text. An adjusted version of Hraban's setup can show what I have tried by way of example: %---------------- \define[1]\TitleTocEntry{% #1\hskip 1cm% title \structurelistuservariable{author}% } \setuplist[title][textstyle=bold, textcommand=\TitleTocEntry, ] %--------------- /Question 1:/ /How to get the two author names to line up vertically./ Given that I have both a Foreword and a Preface, I am using \title for these. And both have separate authors. The titles will be simply 'Foreword' and 'Preface', obviously. *Foreword Author name* *Preface Author name* I am using \hskip 1cm to separate the authors' names from either of those two words. But this does not give me the kind of exact positioning I need to get the two author names directly underneath each other in the list. I have tried various alternatives to \hskip, but none of them can give me the correct proportional distance. The distance is obviously being controlled by the fact that 'Foreword' is 8 characters and 'Preface' is 7. Is what I want only obtainable with a table setup? The issue might or might not be more complicated when I get to main chapters, where the author names need to line up with the Foreword and Preface author names as well. There will be, e.g. Chapter One Title Author name // /Question 2:/ /How to independently get Foreword and Preface to be bold, but the authors' names to be regular./ \setuplist offers me options like textstyle, pagestyle, numberstyle, but they apply to everything (both Foreword/Preface and Authors' name are bold). I thought perhaps I could control it from within the document, e.g. \starttitle[title={\ss\bf Foreword}][author={A. Uthor}] But that does the same - both Foreword and A. Uthor end up bold. And besides, I also want to style the ToC independently of the heads if I can. The wiki and various manuals do offer various tips on modifying the ToC, but I cannot find anything regarding the two questions above - not yet, anyway. If someone knows where, please point me to it. Column not Balancing, Footnote is Missing

Greetings, list. My first post here. Please be gentle! The command \contextversion reports I am using 2020.09.03 20:03 on Windows 10. The MWE below produces a column and a half of text, not balanced (despite the \setupcolumns [...balance=yes...] command. Also, the footnote *number* appears on the PDF, but the *text* of the footnote doesn't. Appendix question

A (hopefully) simple question this time: Why would my appendices be labelled as Appendix One, Appendix Two etc., instead of Appendix A, Appendix B? I thought Appendices would normally be labelled alphabetically, not numerically. So I get APPENDIX as the label, I have: \setuplabeltext [en] [chapter={\bf Chapter }, appendix=APPENDIX ] But elsewhere I have: \setupheads[chapter][indentnext=no,conversion=Words,distance=.25em] So is that what is affecting my appendices, and if so how do I do it so that Chapters get words (One, Two, etc) and Appendices get letters (A,B, etc)? Hi Taco, thanks for the input. Your example works, and produces the glyphs. Pdf attached, I hope this system allows it (only 36.3 kB). "u101F2" is the unicode name for the glyph. I would guess, according to what you told me, that the code point would be "00024", but honestly, I have no idea. Hi, list! I have a problem with some graphics in Metapost. I've tried to replicate the Koch curve cited here using ConTeXt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system To my own amusement, the patterns seem to appear. Can't output direct glyphs either in MKIV or LMTX

Hello list. I'm trying to call a direct glyph from the Phaistos font, but it seems it doesn't work. The font is loaded, the log file says it so: system > 12: filename=/home/vantta/.fonts/Phaistos.otf format=otf foundname=/home/vantta/.fonts/Phaistos.otf fullname=/home/vantta/.fonts/Phaistos.otf usedmethod=direct However, the glyph is not displayed in the pdf. I've tried both in MKIV and LMTX with no luck. Maybe someone here will have a clue. Problems with tikz plot file

Hi everyone Following MWE produces an error on newest lmtx (current version: 2020.09.03 20:03): \usemodule[tikz] \starttext \placefigure[here][]{}{\hbox{\starttikzpicture \draw plot file {data.table}; \stoptikzpicture}} \stoptext with data.table: 150 -0.102 150.1 -0.15 150.2 -0.389 150.3 -0.15 150.4 -0.389 150.5 -0.15 150.6 -0.293 150.7 -0.341 150.8 -0.485 150.9 -0.293 (data.table could be any x-y-pair) The error says: tex error on line 5 in file ./plot.tex: Argument of \pgf@parsexyline has an extra } It doesn't seem to be directly related to https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/10267/how-to-find-unmatched-bracke… as I have tested to convert data.table to dos-Format with unix2dos. \setupuserpagenumber not working as expected

Am seeking to have frontmatter pages in roman numerals and from Chapter 1 onwards in arabic numerals. I have achieved something of the kind, but page 1 (arabic) is appearing on the last page of the frontmatter and not the first page of Chapter 1. I do not know why this is happening. My setup for page numbering is as follows (something I found somewhere - wiki? elsewhere? Not sure. I didn't make it up!): \definestructureconversionset[frontpart:pagenumber][][romannumerals] \definestructureconversionset[bodypart:pagenumber] [][numbers] \startsectionblockenvironment[frontpart] \setupuserpagenumber[numberconversion=romannumerals] \setuplist[chapter][pageconversionset=pagenumber] \setuppagenumber[number=1] \stopsectionblockenvironment \startsectionblockenvironment[bodypart] \setuppagenumber[number=1] \stopsectionblockenvironment The frontmatter is some 16 pages worth (ends on a verso page but that verso carries the arabic number 1 instead of page xvi which it should be, since the final paragraph on that page ends with \stopfrontmatter. That means Chapter 1 (immediately after \startbodymatter) is now page 2 instead of page 1! I tried a slightly simpler version of the above which I found on Stackexchange: |\definestructureconversionset[frontpart:pagenumber][][romannumerals]|| | |\startsectionblockenvironment[bodypart]| |\setcounter[userpage][1]\stopsectionblockenvironment| but it gave me the same result. author in ToC and other design complications

Very much at the conclusion of a complicated book where most if not all issues in the body of the text are resolved, but now comes the really difficult part: the Table of Contents. Here is what I am currently using (but it does not produce what I have been asked for, which is explained below this MWE): %------------------------------ \setuphead [subject] [incrementnumber=list] \setuphead [title] [incrementnumber=list] \setupcombinedlist [content] [list={chapter,title,section,subsection}]\switchtobodyfont[10.5pt] \setuplist[chapter][style=normal,alternative=b, before=] And then I place the ToC using: \definehead [tochead] [title] \starttochead[title={Contents}] \placecombinedlist[content] \stoptochead %----------------------------- The last bit ensures that I get the word 'Contents' as the toc title, and avoid then getting 'contents' listed as an item with its page number. And if I want a relatively straightforward Table of Contents, then this mostly works, giving me (e.g.): Foreword iii One Chapter title 1 Two Chapter title 10 etc. Of course, I would prefer it to say 'Chapter One' not just 'One', so that is a minor problem I still have to resolve. But in fact, the publisher wants something quite different and I really do not know how to go about it. I did look at 'Author in ToC' in the wiki, but that referred me to a somewhat complicated Proceedings style, and given that my Chapters are all set up anyway, I just couldn't follow that. Am hoping there is some other way I can achieve the design that follows: Foreword Author's name iii Chapter One Chapter title Author's name 1 Chapter Two 1820-1880 Chapter title Author's name 10 I need to add that the current setup to obtain Chapter Two is with \setuplabeltext[chapter={{Chapter },{:1820-1880}}] which gives me Chapter Two:1820-1880 I had thought that maybe I could get the author with something like \starttitle[title={\ss Foreword}][author={Author Name}] Foreword content.... \stoptitle But that does not produce any author name in the ToC, and in fact the Author's name in the Chapter opening page is simply placed manually as a right-aligned item in the position where I want it, nothing to do with the setup for \chapter (or \title in this case). Given the above complicated design (or so it seems to me) will I have to just set the ToC up manually with a table, or can it be achieved otherwise? Julian

That clears up that little item :-) BTW I know how to reduce font size in the headers (chapter titles) that appear on the recto pages, which I can do with something like \setupheader [style={\ss\switchtobodyfont[10pt]}], but it doesn't seem to affect the header (title of the book) on the verso pages, which is drawn from the simple statement: \startdocument [metadata:title={Book title}] Shouldn't \setupheader affect both headers? Or is it possible I have left something out of my \setupheader declaration? Dear List, I am using ConTeXt LMTX 2020.08.31 22:16. Consider the following MWE: \starttext \externalfigure[resolutionTest.png] \stoptext When comparing the output with ConTeXt MKIV, then the image size is extremely small. gimp reports the resolution of resolutionTest.png as 71.984 DPI. Is this a bug? (I cannot reproduce the shrinkage with hacker.png.) Also, I noticed that the "resolution" key when applied as: \externalfigure[resolutionTest.png][resolution=150] has no effect. Am working on a book where most chapters are simply labeled Chapter One, Chapter Two etc., and this has been achieved easily enough with \setuplabeltext[chapter=Chapter ] (also including \setupheads[conversion=Words] to get One, Two instead of 1 2). But several chapter labels need to have a date range after them, e.g. *Chapter Three: 1820-1880*. I have tried introducing a new \setuplabeltext[chapter=Chapter: 1820-1880 ] just before the \startchapter command, but this results in*:** * *Chapter: 1820-1880 Three* (and I also hope that introducing this does not also affect Chapter Four since that will have a different set of dates). How can I get a specific labeltext set up so that the result is *Chapter Three: 1820-1880*, and also ensure that other chapters either return to just the chapter number or, if needs be, can also indicate different date ranges? I have looked everywhere on the wiki for ideas to help me, but so far no luck. Julian

I have come up with part answers to my two questions. The remaining unanswered question is in the final line. The question I can now answer, after some experimenting, is how to ensure that I can use small caps as part of the Alegreya family when I need to do so. But I also want to be able to use a second sans serif font, namely ITCAvantGardePro-Md. Can I have two 'mainface' definitions for [ss]? Or how would I achieve this? Julian

Earlier my question was 'what if I want to add an extra sans serif typeface?' (you can see below that I already have one ss - dax, but I need to add ITCAvantGarde as well as part of mainface or in some other way??). *I would like to add to that question, since it is closely connected.* This time, realizing I needed to also use small caps, and because AlegreyaSC of various weights is available in my system, you can see how I thought I would need to add it into the definitions below - in the second line. Then in the body of the document where I needed small caps, I did as follows: {\sc The text I need in small caps} and the rest of the paragraph follows... But the result is that the entire document is now in small caps. setuplayout vs Indesign!

Severe Covid-19 restrictions locally have left me out on a limb unable to be side-byside with people who can set me on track for a few things! Hence the bombardment of questions, for which I apologise. But almost there! The InDesign QC individual (who accepts my ConTeXt-produced pdfs) wants some tweaking to my layout, saying, in simple terms:/Odd/right pgs left margin should be 20mm and right margin 15mm; even/left pgs right margin 20mm and left margin 15mm/. I think the difficulty is that what InDesign calls margins might be termed a little differently in ConTeXt and I have no experience with InDesign. My initial setup was as follows for a paper size defined as [width=140mm,height=216mm] double-sided setup (in other words a standard 8.5"x5.5" book): \setuplayout [backspace=16mm, topspace=12mm, header=6mm, headerdistance=10mm, footerdistance=9mm, footer=8mm, width=fit, horoffset=12.7mm, location=middle, height=198mm, marking=on] There was no mention of 'margins' as such in that layout, and the result is close to what is wanted but not quite. Do I solve the problem by adding in: leftmargin=20mm, rightmargin=15mm, or is it some other item I need to adjust to ensure the 20mm/15mm dimensions requested? Julian

Wiki New Extension: ConTeXtXML

Hi, As announced last week, I have been working on a wiki extension to control the editing of /Command pages. That extension is now installed on the main wiki. In short, we will switch to XML as the page model for newly created /Command pages. This makes editing a bit harder, but it allows much better quality control and (fairly) easy export and import. The goal is to eventually be able to easily export all of the reference documentation in the wiki to a separate system (for instance, Paul Mazaitis plans to create a full-blown reference manual). In the current situation, this is nearly impossible because there is so much variation in the content and quality of the wiki /Command pages (not to mention that many are missing). We also want it to be possible to merge improvements to the interface xml definitions by Wolfgang without loosing any existing documentation work. Index formatting difference LMTX and MkIV

Hello list, I have an index which uses multilevel indexing (a+b+c) to insert entries which contain snips of text. LMTX behaves differently from MkIV when trimming that text, resulting in line wrapping which does not happen with MKiV. I am not sure when this began -- I just picked up work again on this project this week after a hiatus of a couple of months. This does not occur in every instance, but it happens often enough in this 20 page two-column index to add another full page, and it looks ugly in comparison (although perhaps no index looks good). The source is the same for both LMTX and MkIV. There is no explicitly conditional coding. With MkIV, I get: With LMTX, I get: I am struggling to prepare a MWE, but will try to do so if there is no obvious difference to those who ken the code. The problem may not be unique to register creation, but I have not noticed other appearances of the issue in the text. -- Rik

CFF2 based variable fonts with SubRS

Hi, I was playing with the variable font support of ConTeXt's font loader and noticed some issues. 1. While parsing the LocalSubRS and GlobalSubRS Indices, ConTeXt tries to use 16bit count fields as in CFF(1) instead of 32bit fields as in CFF2, reducing the number of found subroutines by a factor of 65536. Effectivly this suppressed all subroutines in the fonts I tested. 2. For fonts where the Top DICT does not contain an FDSelect entry, ConTeXt tries to read the Private dictionary offset from the Top dictionary as in name-keyed CFF1 fonts. This is not the expected behavior for CFF2, where the Top dictionary never contains the Privte offset. Instead, a missing FDSelect means that exactly one entry exists in FDArray which should be used for all CIDs. This caused problems when ConTeXt tried to find the Private directory in order to find local subroutines. odd behaviour with \definefontfamily

Can someone tell me why, when I define my typefaces as follows below, I get: mkiv lua stats > loaded fonts: 2 files: baskervaldadfstd.otf, texgyrepagella-math.otf when in fact my font definitions are: \definefontfamily [mainface] [rm] [baskervaldadfstd] [tf=file:BaskervaldADFStd.otf] \definefontfamily [mainface] [ss] [librisadfstd] [tf=file:LibrisADFStd-Regular.otf] \definefontfamily [mainface] [mm] [TeX Gyre Pagella Math] \setupbodyfont[mainface] --------------------- ConTeXt loads the [rm] and the [mm] but not the [ss]. Be assured that the ss typeface is available. So if, for example, I comment out the first line ([rm]) and change the Libris to rm instead, I am told: mkiv lua stats > loaded fonts: 2 files: librisadfstd-regular.otf, texgyrepagella-math.otf In other words, only two, not three definitions are working at any one time. Or is it not accepting [ss] for some reason regardless? I have tried any number of existing sans serif fonts and none of them will load. I know the family names are correct, so that is not the problem. What could I be doing wrong? Julian

set_lua freezes control sequences

Hi, I noticed that recent LuaMetaTeX versions treats control sequences defined using token.set_lua with `value` or `condition` as frozen and does not allow redefining them. Given that these are not macros, we also can't "unfreeze" them using \unletfrozen. 1. Would it be possible to add a variant of Lua value and condition control sequences that are not frozen? 2. Also is there some way to disable the \frozen restrictions altogether? Maybe \suppressfrozenerror? 3. I also noticed that `token.set_lua` is not affected by control sequences being frozen. Therefore it allows redefining frozen control sequences which seems inconsistent. Best regards, Marcel

Hi, The current version of lmtx has some updated tracing of memory usage. This is irrelevant for most users but some of you generat elarge an complex files so ... (I'm talking about mf here). There is a command line option --usage that will make a run report some more statistics. The info shown might look somewhat cryptic but we basically have (per category) - max: the maximum allowed memory (for many categories we can make that larger, but I need proof that it's needed) - min: this is how we start out - stp: when more memory is needed, this is the step that we use to increase - set: this is the value that context configures by default, often larger than min, and less than max - mem: the memory usage (often in units) - all: the real usage (multiplied by the unit) - ini, ptr and top: are the startup values (when something is also stored in the format), the current usage and the max usage (all within the mentioned min-max range). The rest speaks for itself. Font usage reflects only the tex end, of course there is plenty usage at the lua end. The language info .... I might extend that with pattern and exception usage. Actually, tex memory usage is not that large in luametatex. When mem gets increased, there is a message. We can use that to eventually determine the best values. Actually we might even lower some initial values (not that it matters much, lua uses more). Of course there is also --timing but that one has been there from the start, although I did update it to reflect the more detailed tracing. The graphics are the same as always: red lines are usage, the blue line is the runtime. In general, memory management has been improved: all categories are now more dynamic, there is more checking for overflows, there is some recovery slack in allocation, etc. I will play a bit more some of it, for instance we might end up with more detailed configuration options, in addition the the already new ones. Overriding the number on a float

I think there was a question on this very recently but I don;t think it got an answer and I can't find it to reply to, so apologies for the extra noise. I have a large text with floats numbered sequentially by chapter and then figure/table number, but at the last minute I've had a request for two figures in a particular chapter to become 27.1a and 27.1b instead of 27.1 and 27.2. It's not a combination - they are separate figures on different pages. I've experimented with the options I can see, but it's not obvious if there is a facility to override the numbering of two figures in a stream of normally numbered figures like this. I was thinking of the equivalent of the old \sym{symbol} command that used to work as a way to override a single item in an otherwise sequential list. I guess there's a brute force method of setting up a new type of figure with the label "Figure 27.1" and having them numbered as lowercase alpha, but if there's an easier way that would be great. slight correction to 'short filler rule' question

In the earlier post I mentioned the rules not balancing. That was my error. In experimenting with things I had made a minor error with one of the single \quad statements. Apologies. So, at this stage, replacing left=\zerowidthnobreakspace with left=\quads[3] on the ChapterLeftRule, and doing similarly with right= for the ChapterRightRule, I do achieve something of the kind I am after. I can even go as far as \quads[5] I can see. So maybe I have achieved the desired effect. But it may not be the best way to do it, since I can't control the length of those rules by exact dimensions using this approach. J.

short filler rule either side of a text

I know it is possible to get a rule to act as a filler either side of, say, a chapter head text by using \definefiller with alternative=rule and, as explained in an earlier post <https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/497352/context-heading-text-surroun…>, define a left and right version. So, for example, for the left version: \definefiller [ChapterLeftRule] [ChapterRule] [left=\zerowidthnobreakspace, right=\quad] This gives me a rule that extends to the margins. What if I want the rule to be, say, 2 cm either side of my centered header text? I tried experimenting by replacing left=\zerowidthnobreakspace with left=\quads[3] and that did shorten the rule somewhat, but when I did the same for the other side, it did not balance correctly. So maybe I need to deal with the 'left=' differently to achieve the desired result... or try an entirely different method! Of course, I don't want the rule at the baseline, but raised, as the original stackexchange <https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/497352/context-heading-text-surroun…> example gives. Any clues? keeping content chunks on same page

Just about to have these homework files finished! My final problem (I hope) is keeping question/answer blocks together. The questions are currently defined via \defineenumeration with a \testpage (see below). I fiddled with the \testpage and found that \testpage[6] gave me the best results but there are still some question/answer blocks that get split across pages. The content chunks can be as small as a single line question with T/F answer options, or as large as seven lines for the question and seven for the answer options (although I don't think both of these occur together). In my searching for solutions, I thought I'd found something helpful with \startframed but I can't figure any way to combine the framed and enumeration... Anyway, here's some code. I have a very basic question about color use that someone will be able to answer easily. The background to the question is that (i) I am completely new to this scene of commercially[offset] print-ready material as distinct from what is required on screen (ii) I am using Mk IV (iii) I need spot colors set up for cmyk, and for now I need shades between black and white (e.g. light gray) for a simple design feature. My question is this: is the use of color keywords sufficient? Or in other words, have predefined color names like lighgray already been defined in, say cmyk terms behind the scenes, or must I instead \definecolor[lightgray][c=10,m=7,y=5,k=0], (or perhaps \definespotcolor with those dimensions, or do I need both)? vertical align in tabulate paragraphs

Here’s another problem that I can’t reproduce in a MWE: In a tabulation that is set up like the example, in some cases the right column cell doesn’t top-align with the left one (see screenshot). In most cases it works. There’s no \setuptabulate in my environment; don’t know what else could influence this behaviour. Doesn’t seem to be grid or font related. Any hint where I could look? Chapter heading with rules

Have achieved a Chapter title with rules either side (see below - not an original invention!) but I want the chapter number to be part of 'My Chapter Title'; instead, the following MWE means it comes before the ChapterLeftRule. I know I can do it by actually putting the number before My Chapter title (e.g. 1 My Chapter Title), since the proper numbered version still appears in the TOC, but my preference would be to include a command in the \setuphead, if possible (so long as it still allows the numbered chapter to appear in the TOC of course). Chapter numbering after \part

By default, chapter numbers coming after \part are numbered 1.1... 2.1... and so on. But in my case I need them to still be simply 1,2... for each part. Is there a way I can get this numbering to occur? I thought I could do it using ownnumber=, but that doesn't work. Then I tried a makeup, because I thought that would create a 'Part' page independent of chapter numbers - but that doesn't work either:-). Am sure it is achievable, however.... Julian

I want the first page only of each section to have particular content in header/footer, then all the following pages to different specific content. [BUG] \registerexternalfigure doesn't work

Dear list, To get properties of a figure without actually typesetting it, it is handy to use \registerexternalfigure. However, trying to use it fails. Thank you Otared. The power of ConTeXt never ceases to amaze me, though despite the excellent work done on the wiki recently, it is the little things like the use of \raise that could be better described, especially in a range of applied instances. We find it, combined with hbox, in reference to marginal and centered headers, but it is not intuitive - for me at least - to be able to apply it as you have done in your example. The little process we have gone through, which is step-by-step, is most helpful, and I feel that I can now use these ideas in other instances and in slightly different ways. Thank you. How important is the 'lohi' addition you made to \framed? I removed it to see what would happen and did not notice any appreciable difference in the output. Index confusion with first entry

Hi, my index of locations shows a strange problem: Hamburg 6, 12, 14, 24–25, 27, 31, 33, 35, 44, 46, 48, 57, 59, 64, 75, 79, 81, 93–94, 96, 102, 104–105, 108–110, 112, 116–118, 120, 121–125, 6, 126–135, 6, 137– 147, 149, 151–159, 161, 165, 168, 169–171, 174, 176, 178, 182, 207, 209, 211, 215–216, 219–220, 224, 240, 242–244, 291 Page 6 is mentioned two times out of order. The problem doesn’t show at other locations. The first index entry (p.6) is made by \startregister[locations][test]{Someplace}, second is Hamburg (single entry). If I replace Hamburg with another town, the problem moves. If I move the Hamburg entry in front of \startregister, it disappears! I.e. if the first index entry is set by \startregister, the subsequent entry gets confused. memoir-style chapter heading

Am completely new to using Metafun, which I presume I would need to use to achieve a Hansen Memoir-style Chapter heading (chapter title overlayed on a large lightgray number). Of course, I am assuming I would need to use Metafun to create this... So my first question is to ask if I could achieve the same effect without Metafun? I have read through the Metafun manual, and I think I can understand how to overlay text on a graphic (MP), but it would be currently beyond me to draw numbers of the kind we find in, say, the Memoir examples. Has anyone created such an example? I was keenly looking for one in the manual and elsewhere, in terms of ConTeXt/Metafun commands, but could not find one. But I'd be quite prepared to 'have a go' at this, if I had some pointers of just where to start! I assume I would have to \defineoverlay[number] and then add text on top \framed (but without the frame borders). Am I at least correct about this? Julian

Same counter for figures as theorems

Hi all, I’ve a text where chapters are numbered 1, 2, 3, … and sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, … Now I’d like all elements (figures, tables, examples, definitions, theorems, …) to be numbered consecutively prefixed by the chapter and section number, so 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.2.1, ... I’ve managed to change figure/table captions to do this by: \setupcaptions[ way=bysection, prefixsegments=chapter:section, ] And I’ve setup my enumerations by: \setupenumerations[ way=bysection, prefix=yes, prefixsegments=chapter:section, ] But how do I use the same counter for figures, tables, and all enumerations? Trying to share a counter with: \definecounter[object][ way=bysection, prefix=yes, prefixsegments=chapter:section, ] \setupenumerations[ counter=object, ] \setupcaptions[ counter=object, ] Results in enumerations numbered 1, 2, 3, ... instead of 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, … And figures and tables are still numbered in the default way. Missing graphic in MPpage when viewing in Apple MAC Preview or GIMP 2.10 but not Adobe

Dear List I have come across a problem which I don't think is due to ConTeXt but I'm hopping the great and the good of this list may be able to explain what is going on. The code below produces an MPpage with a shaded background and two graphics along with a line of outlined text. When I view in Adobe (or the output from TeXworks) I see everything as it should be. However, I wanted to convert the MPpage to a jpeg file and when I opened the pdf in either Apple MAC Preview or Gimp 2.10 the two graphics are missing, and I have no idea why. Could someone explain a way round this? Here is the code. Hi list! I have some questions about the template used by module documentation. When I apply context --extra=module t-mymodule.mkvi --autopdf I obtain a nice file, but, among other things, 1) the cover page seems to be a bit... greenish? So I want to know how to customize it, at least at a minimum, and 2) \showframe is enabled by default. How to disable it? Maybe 1) can answer 2) too. Thank you very much. Cordially, Jairo :)

compilation error in LMTX

Dear list, compiling a huge XML document (output PDF > 1200 pages), I get the following error with latest current (2020.08.11 15:59): pages > flushing realpage 187, userpage 187, subpage 3 mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 139 Compilation failed. Some hints about what I cannot avoid considering a cryptic error message: 1. There is no previous warning when compiling previous pages. 1. The compulation error appears on the third run. 1. ConTeXt latest from 2020.08.07 23:37 compiles this just fine. Sorry, there is no minimal sample here. Any ideas about this? Or at least, any chances for the source that is breaking compilation? \scantokens in luametatex

Hi, in the current luametatex upload, \scantokens (and also \scantextokens) behave odd: They seem to act like \detokenize, except that spaces get catcode other instead of catcode space: \starttext \edef\abc{\scantokens{\relax}} \abc \edef\abc{\scantextokens{\relax}} \abc \stoptext used to result in an empty output file but with luametatex, it writes \relax \relax to the output. \starttext \def\showsecond#1{\show} \edef\abc{\scantokens{a b}} \expandafter\showsecond\abc \edef\abc{\detokenize{a b}} \expandafter\showsecond\abc \stoptext prints > the character > blank space Best regard, Marcel Krüger

Embedding fonts from a file

Hello, About a year ago, I asked on this list how to embed OpenType fonts from files (that is, use fonts that are not installed on the system), because one of my projects needed portability (be entirely contained in one directory that I could share). I was given a great answer by Hans and this minimal example ``` \starttext % \ctxlua{fonts.names.addruntimepath("./myfonts")} \ctxlua{os.setenv("RUNTIMEFONTS","./myfonts")} Hello World! \definefont[myfont][file:myfont.otf] {\myfont Hello World!} \stoptext ``` This worked beautifully (with some caveats, like having to clear the cache regularly), but for some reason, it stopped working. I don't know exactly when, because I haven't compiled that project in months, and in the meantime I reinstalled Linux. But now, all embedded fonts are not loading and I get "'fallback modern-designsize rm 12pt' is loaded" as an error message. Any assistance would be appreciated. Krešimir

headers again

Understandably, with work going on for the new \command pages, heatwaves, upcoming ConTeXt meeting, people are very busy. I understand that. In the meantime, I haven't yet found a solution (though I have tried many) to my own problem, small though it is by comparison. So let me try again, putting it simply: Where running heads (headers) are concerned, if I use \chapter I have no problems, nor should I expect any. But because I am also using \title, given that I need some unnumbered chapters interspersed among them, I run into difficulties with headers. Numbered chapters have the correct headers, unnumbered ones (with \title) either don't have them, or do not have the proper chapter header (they pick up the header from the previous numbered chapter). At the moment the only thing I have in the preamble is the expected set of commands for the numbered chapters: [{\hfill\getmarking[chapter]\hfill}][] [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] I thought that might work for the unnumbered ones (\title), thinking that maybe \title inherits from \chapter, but it doesn't. But no amount of variations on the above commands (repeating them but replacing 'chapter' with 'title'; adding [title] or just title, in the first set of commands in various positions...) gives me the correct result. I am assuming, of course, that there is a solution to this difficulty, and that it may be simple. But I haven't found it. Is the problem that I am using \title in the main body to get my unnumbered chapters? I wouldn't think so? It produces the correct result, utlimatley, in the TOC, Is it possible that I may have something else in my preamble that is causing the problem? If so, I can't expect someone to 'guess' that from outside! But at the moment I don't think that is the problem. If not a direct solution, are there any clues someone might give me that will lead me to finding my own solution? It would be much appreciated. Julian

Two questions about color in MetaFun

Hi, list! I have two questions concerning MetaFun: 1st: What is the correct way to pass a ConTeXt named color (e.g. xwi's "maroon") to MetaFun. Using (with \usecolors[xwi] loaded in the preamble): withcolor maroon does not work. I could copy-paste definitions from ConTeXt sources and do e.g. \definecolor [maroon][r=.690196,g=.188235,b=.376471] but it is unfeasible for complete color schemes. So, is there a better way to do it? 2nd: I was trying to do some stuff for my girlfriend using ConTeXt and I tried to randomize colors in MetaFun using normaldeviate. However, something interesting happens. weird issue with xtable

Dear list, in order to avoid a problem already reported (https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/dev-context/2020/003694.html) I added to an indiviual table \startxtable[split=yes] (being the default in the document \setupxtable[split=repeat, header=repeat]). But I’m experiencing a weird issue with that approach. I get the following error message (that breaks compilation) when I add \setupxtable[split=yes]: You can't use '\prevdepth' in restricted horizontal mode The single document (actually, an XML file) compiles just fine, but when combined together to generate a PDF document over 1000 pages, I get the error above. My questions are: what is the restricted horizontal mode (as different from the horizontal mode)? Help on tweaking alignment, page numbers and ToC

Browsing the documentation and finding stuff is so much easier and pleasant than it used to be (also the site seems faster). Thanks to the docs, dropcaps and protrusion have no secrets for me, but I am still struggling with some basic tasks (see the document below): 0. Wiki New Extension Preview

Hi, Some of you already know that I have been working on a wiki extension to control the editing of /Command pages. The goal is to eventually be able to easily export all of the reference documentation in the wiki to a separate system (for instance, Paul Mazaitis plans to create a full-blown reference manual). In the current situation, this is nearly impossible because there is so much variation in the content and quality of the wiki /Command pages (not to mention that many are missing). We also want it to be possible to merge improvements to the interface xml definitions by Wolfgang without loosing any existing documentation work. After some evenings and weekends of steady discussion with Paul, Wolfgang and some others on the wiki mailing list and a fair bit of hacking, this plan is now starting to come together. In short, we will switch to XML as the page model for newly created /Command pages. This makes editing a bit harder, but it allows much better quality control and (fairly) easy export and import. The new extension is not installed on the normal wiki yet, because it makes sense to see if we can get some of the bugs ironed out before we start working on actual /Command pages. It is my first ever Wiki extension and even my first non-trivial php code, thus I am certain there will be bugs. So, while the documentation pages are already on the normal wiki, any testing and/or experimenting has to be done on the test wiki. If you want to see how one of those pages would look like in the new system, you’ll have to rename the existing page first. Be assured that nothing on the wikitest is permanent! As long as the browser url says “ https://wikitest.contextgarden.net/ ” you cannot destroy anything important. \checkpage in the TOC

Hello! humble, in another book I am trying to improve the list of contents. On different places occur page breaks which should be addressed and corrected. I tried to use the method \checkpage[][], however my attempts are not succesful. \setfirstline is applied to whole paragraph

When I typeset the example at https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/definefirstline (reported below for your convenience), \setfirstline is applied to the whole first paragraph, which is laid out on a single line (hence, it is cropped at the edge of the page). Besides, the second \setfirstline is not applied at all, i.e., there are no small caps. \title with extra content in toc

Still dealing with \title, but am creating a separate thread because the question is different. As well as using \title within frontmatter (my previous question was about the header not appearing on final page if it is an odd/recto page) I am also using it in the main body for 'chapters' that I don't want numbered, and of course, have ensured that such \title items can appear in the TOC. But I want to add a one-word comment in brackets to the title that appears in the TOC, so that I get: Chapter title (comment).......... 5 or whatever the page number is. Is there are way I can add extra content to an item that appears in the TOC? In this case it would be the same comment in each instance, but my question assumes that there could also be a need for different comments, none of which appear in the 'chapter' title in the main body. Clearly I am now getting myself quite confused where headers are concerned, and have sought as much info as I can on the wiki, but am not getting the desired results. We are talking about ConTeXt MkIV and a doublesided document. If I only use \chapter throughout and have my setup as: \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\getmarking[chapter]\hfill}][] [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] then everything works as it should: Chapter title as header on recto pages and book title as header on verso pages. And as chapters change so does the header on the recto page. But this book has some 'chapters' that need to be unnumbered, for which I am using \title in the main body (as well as in frontmatter). Everything else about this choice works, except for the recto headers. If I use ONLY the setup above, then fairly obviously the numbered Chapters work, but those with \title continue to use the previous Chapter header for the recto pages (the verso pages with the book title is okay). So I understand that I may need to also give a command for the \title 'chapters' to act the way the other numbered chapters do. So I thought I could do this by simply adding the same set of commands above, but this time using title: \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\getmarking[*chapter*]\hfill}][] [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\getmarking[*title*]\hfill}][] [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] However, when I do this, I get strange behaviour: now the numbered chapters do not show their recto header at all (the verso book title still appears though). The unnumbered \title chapters now show the headers but the same behaviour as indicated above occurs - the next numbered chapter after that carries the previous unnumbered chapter's title. Obviously I cannot do things the way I am doing it, but I cannot find how to do it. The other behaviour is the one I noted in an earlier post - if I get \title (used for an introduction) in the frontmatter to work with the correct headers, in the case of this Introduction (which is seven pages), the last of the recto pages does not bear the header 'Introduction'. Perhaps this is expected behaviour? Julian

I am using \title within frontmatter for an introduction. The \setupheadertexts for title (recto and verso pages) is: \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\getmarking[title]\hfill}][] [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] Now, that setup (this time for [chapter]) works correctly for chapters in the main body of text, but for some reason that I am unaware of, in the case of the 'Introduction', I get a header text ('Introduction' is the text) where I should */except for the last page of the introduction/* (There are seven pages in the intro, so it is the 7th, therefore odd-numbered page that is missing the header). I would like to understand why this is happening and, of course, be able to adjust something so that I do get the header on that page, as I do for the other pages. Julian

How can I use ConTeXt from TeXLive2020 ?

Hi all, I suggested to a friend, who is using plain TeX and LaTeX, to switch to ConTeXt, and since he is using TeXShop on MacOSX with a version of TeXLive2020 (named MacTeX2020), I thought he would just typeset a simple test document with the option « ConTeXt (LuaTeX) » from the menu in TeXShop, where it does appear. Unfortunately when doing this all he gets in the log file is: /sw/bin/init.csh: No such file or directory. mtxrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' and I could not help him make the format (I do not have access to his machine, and I was trying to explain what to do on the phone). He cannot (or does not want) to install a standalone version of ConTeXt, and he thinks that since ConTeXt exists in TeXLive2020 it should work out of the box, as do plain TeX and LaTeX. My opinion is that he is right… But since for the tim ebeing this is not the case, can anyone explain what to do in order to enable ConTeXt running from TeXLive2020? orphans and widows not working in LMTX?

MkIV beta from 2020.01.30 14:13 moves the the last line to avoid the orphan (page #2 starts with "c"). Could anyone confirm the issue with orphans/widows in LMTX? Hi, list! :D I've found \applytosplitstringwordspaced and many other commands reading on the mailing list and TeX StackExchange. An issue with those is: the following does not work: \applytosplitstringwordspaced\somemacro{\input knuth} It only works with explicit TeX "words". How to circumvent this inconvenience?
