Hi, Because I'll probably forget to mention if, here is some new features (upcoming lmtx only): \definefontfeature[default][default,quality] \setupbodyfont[pagella] \starttext {whatever we want to achieve} \input tufte \setupalign[tolerant,stretch,hz] {whatever we want to achieve} \input tufte {\noexpansion whatever we want to achieve} \input tufte \stoptext That is: one can mark text to *not* use font expansion in an otherwise expansion (hz) context. I have no clue how useful it is. So, the first paragraph has no expansion., the second one has while the third one has except for the first 5 words. And yes, there's also similar trickery for protrusion, \noprotrusion, but i didn't test it. This is in addition the the already mentioned \nokerning and \noligaturing features that also obey grouping. All this in the perspective of (luameta)tex giving detailed control over matters. Some interaction questions

Hi, I have a few more question regarding interaction/PDF bookmarks and PDF links: - How can you ignore Commands in bookmarks? Like when instead of "The concept of {\em bookmarks}", I'd prefer to just have "The concept of bookmarks". I know I can just use something like \startchapter[title=The concept of {\em bookmarks}, bookmark=The concept of bookmarks] But is there an setting for that? - When clicking on a link, the focus switches to the target page. Is it possible to go to the line of the target? (Would be nice for switching between notes and text. Otherwise linking between notes and note markers would be quite pointless.) Best, Denis

Hello Joaquín, I have been looking to get into ConTeXt for a few months now, LaTeX drove me completely insane when writing my Master’s thesis. I have been looking for an up-to-date introduction to ConTeXt as a whole, as I am still unable to get basic things working in ConTeXt after reading the ‘Excursion’. (I really tried to the best of my ability!) I just wanted to voice my support this book, as I feel that such a newbie-friendly resource would fill a gaping hole in the current ConTeXt ecosystem. Export, page break markers

Hi, as I'm almost done with my PDFs for the first volume of our journal, I'm thinking about also publishing HTMLs. We have XSLTs almost ready for this, but I was thinking if I could use ConTeXt also for this. A very nice feature would be being able to add marking of page breaks in the resulting XML/HTML. The wiki says it's not possible, but I'm not so sure this page still reflects the current state of affairs. Is that possible by now? Other export related things that have changed in the last three years? Best, Denis

Consequences of \zwnj for hyphenation

index issues

(1) If I get the same index entry two or more times on a page, sometimes with processor formatting, sometimes not, how can I control which version takes precedence? Actual use case: index entries from footnotes should be italics, while those from the main text stay upright. Now, if there is an entry from the main text, the entry from the footnote doesn’t matter. Is it possible to control that? I wouldn’t like to sort out the cases manually and remove the entries from the footnotes – there are 981 footnotes in this book, and there are 15 pages of index entries. I’m using a macro (I suppose you’ll remember; I left out the Lua table lookup for unified entries): \defineprocessor[kursiv][style=italicface] \define[1]\nIndex{\doifmodeelse{*footnote}{% \expanded{\index[kursiv->]{#1}}}% }{% \expanded{\index{#1}}}% }} (2) Can I avoid linebreaking of page ranges in \placeindex? How do you deal with inappropriate ligatures?

Hi, with LuaLaTeX I used to use the selnolig package to disable inappropriate ligatures. With ConTeXt I have just inputted the list prepared by Hraban (based on a wordlist originating from selnolig), but then ran into a curious bug (?) with disappearing characters (see my posts from a couple of days ago). I'm now converting this list to the \blockligatures mechanism (instead of using \replaceword), which also has better kerning support due to Hans. When done, I'll of course share this on the Wiki if there's any need for this. Now I'm wondering how others deal with inappropriate ligatures. Do you just ignore them? Do you block them on an ad-hoc basis, like whenever they occur? Do you use scripts to pre-process your files before typesetting? Do you just disable ligatures globally? I tend to think there must be an automatic way to deal with the most awkward cases. The problem is that there just so many. What do you think? Best, Denis

I don’t know how to get \numbersfname equal to "123". I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. 2. Is there no Lua version of \getvariable{...}{...}? 3. I’m trying this on a Linux box, but on Windows I would say that Lua variable "d" is empty. I need to get the number from \env{fname} and I don’t know what I’m missing. \doif is the way to test whether it’s right. Could anyone explain me what I’m missing here? bug with hz in LMTX?

Current LMTX (LuaTeX 2.07 20200920 + ConTeXt MkIV 2020.09.20 23:02) has the issue, while MkIV (LuaTeX 1.11 7226 + ConTeXt MkIV 2020.01.30 14:13) has no problem with that. I think this might be a bug. font clarification

Can someone clarify a font issue for me please. I have the following setup: \definefontfamily[mainface][rm][TeX Gyre Pagella] \definefontfamily [mainface] [ss] [Arial][tf=file:arial:ttf] \definefontfamily [mainface] [mm] [TeX Gyre Pagella Math] \setupbodyfont[mainface,11.5pt] When I look at what this produces, I see that my body text is in fact texgyrepagellamath-regular. If I run mtxrun --script font --list --file -pattern=*pag*, I see, among others, the following: texgyrepagellamath ... texgyrepagellamathregular texgyrepagella-math.otf conflict: regular texgyrepagella ... texgyrepagellaregular texgyrepagella-regular.otf conflict: regular So three questions: 1. Does Tex Gyre Pagella Math contain everything I need for my body font (ignore Arial - I use that for drop caps and a few other things and it works as it should)? 2. If so, do I still need the first line in my setup, namely the [rm] line? Would not the [mm] be enough? 3. The mtxrun output suggests there is a 'conflict' between tgpagella-regular and tgpagella-math. What is the nature of this 'conflict'? It is possible that my questions reveal a basic misunderstanding of this typeface. Don't hesitate to tell me so but also try to put me right. Julian

figure library

I have used figure libraries in the mkII past. But my recent attempts with mkIV, following the instructions on ConTeXt Wiki (https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Image_Database) have failed. The following happens: 1. When running the command "context --input=figure-lib.xml auto:x-res-01.mkiv --result=figure-lib" in an EMPTY directory, 2 pages with buttons and titles are created. 2. When providing an image and an xml file (copied from the website above and including the image name and the missing ">" at the end), these are ignored -- the same 2 empty pages are created. Could somebody tell me what's wrong (with me, most likely)? Details: mkiV and LMTX, MacOS and FreeBSD, recent ConTeXt installations. Beamer --> ConTeXt (sample)

Hello, recently I ha dto quickly put together few presentations for online meetings and not knowing better (aka quicker) way, I took/installed LyX on my Fedora machine. The process is not so smooth and end result is OK if we forgive ourselves that all Beamer presentations are looking almost the same. However, I'm not into diving deep into Beamer package studying/learning it more thoroughly anticipating that soon I'd have to do the same thing with some other package. :-) Otoh, ConTeXt is a different league and learning it will pay for itself in the long run. However, in order to be at least somewhat productive, I need some help so I can have some starter and not postponing learning ConTeXt ad infinitum, so I'm attaching small Beamer sample and wonder if someone can help by providing somewhat similar thing for ConText? (no need for all the graphic - I'm more concerned with proper overlays and having content in more than single column). Local custom notes affect regular footnotes

If I use local notes, regular footnotes disappear in the following example: \definenote[testnote] \starttext \startlocalnotes[testnote] Test\testnote{Custom note} Other text inbetween with normal footnotes.\footnote{Footnote} Test\testnote{Another custom note} Other text afterwards with normal footnotes.\footnote{Other Footnote} :::\placelocalnotes[testnote] ::: ---\placelocalnotes[footnote] --- % just to be sure, no output %\stoplocalnotes % a NOP? \stoptext (LMTX or MkIV 2020.09.20 23:02) The use case is a commented edition of historical letters. Footnotes of letter contents should be local and numbered per letter, while general footnotes should behave as usual and are numbered by text. (This setup works otherwise, no need to explain.) Actually, the “normal text” part appears only after a letter, but before \placelocalnotes. The logical structure would be: \startlocalnotes[testnote] \startnarrower \input lorem\testnote{bla bla} \input lorem\testnote{bla bla} \stopnarrower \stoplocalnotes % forgets local notes \input knuth\footnote{Donald dixit} \placelocalnotes[testnote] % nothing In the MWE, the footnotes just disappear. In the actual project the problem is different, but I couldn’t reproduce it in a MWE. I guess the interference of different note types is the cause of both problems. I tried using the same custom note for the last comment as a workaround, but it gets placed twice: once at the bottom of the current page (i.e. like a normal footnote, out of order) and once after the other custom notes. Fine tuning an index

I'm doing my first mkiv index (it took me a long time to upgrade from mkii!) and I really like the processor feature to format elements differently. But there are a couple of things I would really like to achieve that I'm struggling with: 1. Elided numbers in an index range entry. For example if I have a \startregister - \stopregister pair resulting in an index entry like entry 354--356 I would like to be able to make this read entry 354--6 There are different conventions for number span elision but usually teens aren't elided so entry 314--316 would become entry 314-16. It strikes me that if I could set up a processor specifically for page number ranges I could possibly write a macro to do elision; but I don't think that's currently possible? Maybe it's possible in lua to write code which both identifies range page numbers and carries out the elision. I'm not quite sure where to start. 2. Fine tuning column and page breaking in an index. This is tricky, because there are usually very few "good" places to break an index, and automatic breaking seems to alter slightly depending on whether interactions are set up or not, but is there a way to manually insert a column or page break into the register before or after a certain entry, the way there is for a table of contents? Sorry for no MWE, for obvious reasons. Any pointers to what might be able to be done on these would be much appreciated. Thanks. Duncan

Hi, I prefer links to be styled as normal text, but I'd nevertheless to highlight them somehow on screen. The LaTeX package Hyperref adds red frames to clickable content. Is something like that possible with ConTeXt? Best, Denis

Split Table, don't repeat caption

Hi, is there a way not to repeat the caption of a multipage natural table? I've searched the list archive and it looks the question came up a couple of times, but I couldn't find an answer. Also, if I add a footnote to a caption of a split table, this note always appears when the caption appears for the last time. Can that be changed? Best, Denis

Hi, I do as adviced on the Wiki and input the nolig-german-wordlist.tex to suppress wrong ligatures. However, I'm seeing strange results: ``` \input nolig-german-wordlist.tex \starttext auffasste auffasse \stoptext ``` gives me "auffasse auffasse" (see attachment.) I don't really understand what is happening here. Why is the t disappearing. ``` \replaceword[eka][auffasse][au{ff}asse] \replaceword[eka][auffasste][au{ff}asste] \setreplacements[eka] \starttext auffasste auffasse \stoptext ``` This example gives correct results. playing with Windows drag & drop

Hi all, the content generated by the MWE below contains 1 bb ... 1 2 bb ... 1 instead of 1 aa ... 1 2 bb ... 1 because the content structure refers to the macro name \name in both sections instead of to work with the text. Maybe it was already discussed by I am not able to find any solution how to send the text "aa" to the content in this case. Thanks in advance for any hint. xml bookmarks

Hello to everybody! I have a similar problem as Tomas two days ago. When inserting bookmarks from XML the reference to the node is stored in TUC file ["titledata"]={ ["label"]="section", ["title"]="\\xmlatt {xml:name::4}{title}" and this reference ends up in bookmarks. Any advice on how to change it to text in bookmarks? Find attached MWE (mkiv, current beta), third section is inserted manually. Thank you, Jano

I have found this issue not only with makeups. Also some footnotes in my documents, but I couldn’t provide a minimal sample that displays the problem with those. Could anyone confirm this issue? Hi, John MacFarlane, the developper of Pandoc, has released a new Citeproc that generates citations and bibliographies using CSL style files (CSL= citation style language). While it is written in Haskell and while it's primarily intended for use with Pandoc, it can also be used in other contexts. Provided with a JSON encoded list of references via stdin, it can produce formatted output. I know that ConTeXt has its own infrastructure to format bibliographies and citations, but, given the enormous amount of available styles in CSL, I nevertheless think that this could be a worthwile addition. What would be necessary to make such a toll usable with ConTeXt? How complicated would that be? Best, Denis

solution to suppressing header in ToC

Hi list, I am offering the solution I found for myself for suppressing headers in a multipage Table of Contents, after trying a number of other unsuccessful approaches. My solution may be useful for others, but it may also be that, while it works, there may be even better solutions that someone wishes to offer. The problem was that \definehead [tochead] [title] \starttochead[title={Contents}] \setupheader[state=stop] \placecombinedlist[content] \stoptochead was giving me headers on the second and third pages of the ToC, and my publisher did not want those headers to appear, but did want page numbers still. A successful solution is: \starttochead[title={Contents}] \setupheader[state=stop] \placecombinedlist[content] \stoptochead and then, after, the first full text page, to put: \starttitle[title={Acknowledgments}] \setupheader[state=empty] If I had state=normal, it gave me a header on the first page of 'Acknowledgements'. but state=empty gave me what I needed in this case. I notice that when I use \definehead [tochead] [title] \starttochead[title={Contents}] \placecombinedlist[content] \stoptochead I am getting header and footer still (not on the first page, but on following pages - the TOC runs into several pages). How can I prevent that happening, or more specifically, could I prevent just the header but leave the footer (page number)? I tried using \startmakeup but that ruins the layout of my TOC. I also tried adding [header=empty] to my combinedlist setup: \setupcombinedlist [content][header=empty] but that didn't work either. What am I missing? Julian

help with forced page break in TOC

I am unable to adapt the example given in https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Table_of_Contents#Forced_Page_Break to my situation: In my case, the ToC has no chapters per se, but uses a defined \mytitle. This produces a series of unnumbered items in the ToC. The example in contextgarden tells me to first define the break, which I have done: \definelistextra[page][before=\page] It then tells me to call this in where I \placecontent (in my case I am using my own defined \placecombined list[content]). The example given in the wiki is: \placecontent[extras={6=page}] But I have unnumbered items which are titles (mytitles), so I am not sure what to replace '6' with. I tried: \placecombinedlist[content][extras={mytitle title={Elements of Reading}=page}] since 'Elements of reading' is the title before which I want the page break to occur. This does not work. I tried variation of it, e.g. since it is the third such title I tried ][extras={3=page}] but that does nothing either. Any clues as to how I can resolve this small problem? Julian

wrong linebreak with latest LMTX

Dear list, I don’t have a minimal sample, but the following images display problems in linebreaks using LMTX (LuaTeX 2.07 20200920 + ConTeXt MkIV 2020.09.20 23:02). 1. https://pdf.ousia.tk/wrong-linebreak.png. 2. https://pdf.ousia.tk/wrong-linebreak-again.png. 3. https://pdf.ousia.tk/wrong-linebreak-nohz-nothanging.png. I guess a sample would be required for a fix, but I have to find time to write it. Maybe someone else could confirm a similar issue with linebreaks. I enable expansion and protrusion, but the third sample shows unintended protrusion on the first line of the paragraph. Also adding broad to hz and hanging in align doesn’t make any difference. Protusion and spurios empty line

Hi, I'm getting emtpy lines after paragraph breaks, where the last character is just squeezed in. Looks like it has to do with the bidi mechanism. Commenting out this line removes the effect. Dear Reader, I have a colored section, text in another color and a TikZ picture with a differently colored node, following each other. However, either the node gets the wrong color or the following paragraph, see example below. Is there something wrong with the section settings? no frontmatter head on recto page

For some reason that I cannot work out, the recto page header is not appearing in frontmatter sections like Foreword. It is important to note that for this item I am using: \definehead [foreword] [chapter]... \setuphead [foreword] [frontpartlabel=foreword, conversion=empty] Then starting this section in the main body with \startforeword...\stopforeword. As 'foreword' is based on chapter, I thought it would all work correctly given that I already have: [{\hfill\getmarking[chapter]\hfill}][] [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] And I also have: \setupsectionblock[frontpart][page=yes] in case that is important as well. I am getting the verso page header (the book's title, obviously coming from the \documentvariable{metadata:title}), but not the recto header (in this case 'Foreword'). What am I doing wrong? I tried two solutions to solve the problem, neither worked: 1. In \setuphead I thought perhaps I might need to add placehead=yes, but that did nothing. 2. I also tried [{\hfill\getmarking[chapter, foreword]\hfill}][] in case I needed to add in 'foreword', having defined it as a head. That did nothing either. Any clues as to what I am missing? Julian

correct vertical alignment in ToC

A quick look at the attached pdf extract from my current Table of Contents will demonstrate the problem. I need authors names, chapter titles and/or date range to line up correctly underneath each other, but because of the definitions I am working with (see below how the current result has been acheived) I do not know how to get these precise margin (I presume?) distances. So, for example, the author for the Preface needs to line up directly under the author for the Foreword. And the title for Chapters One/Two and the date range for Chapter Three likewise. The 'Context' item is a \section and I have got that more or less to line up by using an \hspace definition, but I know that using two very different definitions is likely to cause problems. (Alternatively, they could all line up under the title for Chapter One, so a bit further in. What *has to happen* is that they all line up accurately under each other, whichever solution I use). My real problem is that I do not know how get these specific distances from the left-hand side using the definitions I have. If I knew how to get, say, 3cm in from the margin for Chapter authors/titles/date ranges (given the definition below) and section authors (given its definition below), I could solve this problem, but everything I have tried does not seem to work. OK, I Don't Quite Understand \definefontfamily

I don't seem quite able to put it all together, forgive the question. I have a 'Bookman' font setup, pretty vanilla: \definetypeface [Bookman] [rm] [serif] [bonum] [sl=name:unituscndboldoblique] \definetypeface [Bookman] [tt] [mono] [modern] [default] \definetypeface [Bookman] [ss] [sans] [unitus] [default] \definetypeface [Bookman] [mm] [math] [modern] [default] (Unitus is the fontsite 500 'Univers' substitute, works fine) Now, the built-in gyre bonum font doesn't have a slanted/oblique variant, so if I have Bookman as my main body font, \sl produces (unsurprisingly) the same result as \it, TexGyreBonum-Italic. If I want \sl to summon Latin Modern for the variant, I have tried variations on \definetypeface [Bookman] [rm] [serif] [bonum] [sl=file:Latin Modern Roman Slanted] but to no avail — not helped by the fact that the \definetypeface contextgarden page doesn't have any pointer to just what that fifth argument can contain. How do I accomplish this?

numbering pages included by \copypages

I need to include several documents in a single paginated file. Treating the source file (.tex) of each document as a component file in a .prd file is one way to go. But I was wondering if it might be possible to do get the same result using the .pdf files of each document instead. \copypages is promising: it includes the. pdf files and the counter in the resultant .prd file is correct. But what I still have to get is the page number on all pages of the included .pdf files except the first page in each. I looked at \startpagefigure but that would be a very cumbersome way to go since there over 350 pages to include, given that it handles only one page at a time. I hope that this makes sense. Any suggestions or pointers will be most welcome. Alan

scaling images

Hi, I’m struggling with scaling images: \externalfigure[hacker][width=0.5\textwidth] looks right. If I use the scale / xscale / yscale options, the image gets smaller, regardless of height/width settings, i.e. with \externalfigure[hacker][width=0.5\textwidth,yscale=500,xscale=1000] It looks like scaling resets height/width settings and uses the image size defined by its resolution. In my current project, I can’t seem to manage to y-scale an image in a float, but I couldn’t reproduce that in a MWE yet, don’t know it it’s related. (both LMTX or MkIV, v. 2020.09.20 23:02) Hraban

For index ranges, I need the page number suffix only to appear on the end page number, not the start page number. Hi Just wondering what the current support for Arabic is. Does anyone know? My document works fine for Hebrew and I've just added a new fontfallbac: \definefallbackfamily[mainface][rm][Scheherazade] [range=arabic, force=yes, features=arabic] Bidi is activated with \setupdirections[bidi=global,method=unicode] Is that enough for Arabic? Or are there other things I need to take care of? issue with interaction=all and \insertpages

For some strange reason, the first \insertpages command with a remote file cannot deal with the interaction from the file (no internal or external links). 2. The local file includes internal destinations to page parts. After imposition, destinations to page for internal links cannot reach the page parts as links in original document do. 3. Even external links are converted. On last page, https://www.cs.umb.edu/~offner/files/pi.pdf is rewritten as https://www.cs.umb.edu/õffner/files/pi.pdf. Full page image and caption in another page?

Hi, it's my first message on this list. I've searched in ConTeXt manuals, TeX.SX and here, but couldn't find a way to achieve these 4 requirements altogether: 1. Place a figure as full-page figure 2. Change orientation accordingly (if it's a landscape PDF, for instance) 3. Make that using \setupfloat (or other setup), not directly in \placefloat 4. Hi, I need to produce PDF/a. I've followed the advice on the Wiki, and the file validates with: https://www.pdf-online.com/osa/validate.aspx But Acrobat complains about some problem with the XMP definition. Does anyone know more about this? Best, Denis

Hi, I usually don't need tables, therefore this maybe stupid question: What is the currently recommended way to typeset tables? Still natural tables? Or extreme tables? (My tables won't be 30 pages long.) Also, how do you easiest define booktabs style tables? I mean: can you define tables such that the last row end with thicker lines without having to make this explicit? Is there a mechanism for this? (That would make the XML mapping much simpler.) Dear List, I have the following MWE: \definefontsynonym[ZapfDingbats][file:ZapfDingbats][features=dingbats] \usemodule [fnt-10] \starttext (1) \getglyphdirect{ZapfDingbats}{61491}\crlf % MKIV log: char  (U+0F033) in font 'ZapfDingbats-4' with id 8: missing (2) \getglyphdirect{ZapfDingbats}{983059} % LMTX log: char 󰀓 (U+F0013) in font 'ZapfDingbats-4' with id 8: missing \ShowCompleteFont{name:ZapfDingbats}{14pt}{1} \stoptext In MKIV, line (1) fails to output the requested glyph, while line (2) produces a "check" (✓). In LMTX, line (2) fails and line (1) produces the "check" (✓) . The output of "\ShowCompleteFont" reports differing Unicodes for the same glyphs. Apparently the Unicodes for ZapfDingbats have changed. I would like to have a "check" (✓) in the output for both MKIV and LMTX. Options: A) Is there a way to address the glyph in ZapfDingbats for both MKIV and LMTX uniformly, e.g. by glyph index? (By glyph name does not seem to work: MKIV reports glyph names, LMTX does not.) B) Is there a conditional that I can build into the source to distinguish between MKIV and LMTX? C) Is there a font in the distribution for which I can have a "check"-symbol in both MKIV and LMTX? How to get the last item from an XML node

Hi struggling again: Shouldn't the code below give me the last element under <tbody>? Right now \xmlfilter{#1}{/tr/last()/command(xml:table:tbody:tr)} gives me nothing... (Use case is that I want to have a frame above the table and one bar below. So I think I should wrap the last line in the \startxtablefoot ...\stopxtablefoot, i.e., I need one command for the last element, and one for the rest (Or is there a better way?). What would be the everything but the last? What am I missing? Hi, I tried to make a table using \dorecurse or \doloop as in the example. There is no error but \recurselevel is not increased, all are 0 in the first example and only two rows are created with the \recurselevel 0 and 2 only in the second example. Does the tabulate cause the error? What is wrong in this MWE? Thank you for reading. Math fonts for Nimbus fonts

Hi, I wish to use the Nimbus fonts, but since I didn't know which Math fonts is best adapted to this family, I tried several fonts such as Stix Math, TeX Gyre Math, and so on, but doing this the math-italic does not appear in these fonts: does this mean that I have to set explicitely math-italic in definefontfamily? Parallel text support

Hi, I'm trying to typeset a parallel text that should appear in columns. The sources are XML, and there I have to use tables for this. Old-Style numerals command (\os) breaks conversion of hyphens to dashes

I have a fairly large document, 50-60 pp, with lots of numerals, including hundreds of dates. I wanted to see how it would look with old-style numbers and I assumed I could bracket the whole text section of the document within braces and apply the \os command. I didn't turn out as I expected, however. It did convert the numbers to old-style digits. But it also unexpectedly changed the em and en dashes back to hyphens, as they were entered in the source .tex document. MWE follows below. I could possibly do a search-and-replace but I am hoping there is a simpler way to do it.. I am using Libertinus Serif (which does support old style numerals) and columns, if that matters. Hi, I'm using \startstructurelevel so I can nest sections without having to worry about where I am at the moment. (Actually I'm typesetting JATS XML, and there's only one <sec> tag, and using \startstructurelevel makes the mapping easier.) Now, for the bibliography, I need an unnumbered heading. How can I get that? Browsing through the source I came across this: https://source.contextgarden.net/tex/context/base/mkiv/strc-lev.mkvi?search… So, it seems that \startstructurelevel is just an alias for \startsectionlevel. Right? Unnumbered headings can be produced with \startsubjectlevel So, is there a way to let \startstructurelevel the unnumbered variant, or should I just use \startsubjectlevel instead? By the way, is there a reason for the existence \startstructurelevel next to \startsectionlevel? What's the exact purpose of this? Best, Denis

Allow pagebreaks in footnotes

Hi Is there a setting that prevents footnotes from spreading over more than one page? I have a document where this seems to be the case, but I don't know why. It just looks like ConTeXt tries to keep the complete footnote on one page, which leads to ugly white space at the end of almost every page. (LaTeX has \interfootnotelinepenalty to customize this, but what about ConTeXt?) Best Denis

Error setting up ConTeXt in MacTeX 2020

Hi all, with MacTeX 2020 on a newly installed Mac, I have the problem that ConTeXt doesn't work anymore: $ context file.tex mtx-context | warning: no format found, forcing remake (commandline driven) […] snip lots of lines resolvers | formats | changing to format path '/var/folders/rj/hfjmjx796q102y4v23vh038c0000gp/T/luatex-cache/context/a86c089b384a3076dc514ba966a1fac9/formats/luatex' resolvers | formats | unable to change to format path '/var/folders/rj/hfjmjx796q102y4v23vh038c0000gp/T/luatex-cache/context/a86c089b384a3076dc514ba966a1fac9/formats/luatex' mtx-context | error, no format found with name: cont-en, aborting system | total runtime: 5.315 seconds The [ConTeXt docs][1] say that I should run `mtxrun --generate`, which seems to run successfully, and `context --make`, which finishes with the same „unable to change format path“ error (I believe this is what context automatically does when compiling my file, hinted by the „no format found. forcing remake“ message). I tried explicitly running `context --make cont-en` which yields the same result. The given path does exist on my hard drive. I don't even know if the „unable to change format path“ message is actually an error, but I have no other indicator of what goes wrong. The only line that explicitly says „error“ is the one I get when trying to process the file. Interestingly, I have another Mac where I upgraded from MacTeX 2019 to MacTeX 2020 and everything works there. I made sure that everything is up-to-date with the TeX Live Utility. \setbreakpoints[compound] with numbers

Hi, In the texts I'm currently typesetting, I occassionaly have to deal with ISBNs. So, e.g. 978-3-123456-78-9 \setbreakpoints[compound] does not enable automatic linebreaks after or before the hyphens. Is there a way to deal with this? Perhaps something similar like \hyphenatedurl{} or an extended version of \setbreakpoints. (I currently use zero-width spaces, so I got rid of ISBNs in the margins, but a more automatic solution would be great.) Best, Denis

On the other hand, I suppose the best practice, from what I have just read, would be not to use \forgetparagraphfreezing globaly, but \forgetparagraphfreezing and \setparagraphfreezing at the beginning and end of the first paragraph respectively of each chapter. Would this be the least harmful way? That is, wrapping it up to avoid this provisional failure of the Lettrine with LMTX module, but at the same time to avoid affecting that default freezing proposal in the rest of the document, right? Quotation with footnote

My current book contains a lot of quotations with their sources marked as footnotes, e.g. \definedelimitedtext[Zitat][ %setups=Zitat, % doesn’t work!? left=», right=«, leftmargin=2em, rightmargin=1.5em, ] \startZitat A rose is a rose is a rose.\footnote{Marx brothers} \stopZitat Now, since the quotations are whole sentences or paragraphs, the footnote marker needs to be placed _after_ the closing quotation mark. (German typography, I learned it’s different at least in US English.) I tried several approaches e.g. with my own single start/stop macros that call \start/stopnarrower or \start/stopZitat – that always lead to unclosed environments. * Only the delimitedtext approach gives a hanging opening quotation mark (which looks nice and I’d like to have). * \stopnarrower within a macro doesn’t seem to work (all following text stays narrower). * I can’t get rid of that space introduced by the CR before \stop – didn’t find a place where \gobblespacetokens works, maybe that’s the wrong command. Most preferred would be a solution that checked if there’s a footnote in front of \stopZitat and would put the closing quotation mark in front instead of after. Without a footnote it would just place the mark. Something like \stopZitat\footnote{...} would also be nice, but I guess that’s too far outside of TeX’s logic. In the worst case I’d need to typeset the closing mark manually. Some hints please? Hraban

Hi, I want to typeset a Periodic Table of the Elements. The according data is prepared in a file with comma separated values (csv/UNIX). I found some *very* basic informations how to get file based csv-data typeset, but the result is hardly recognizable as Periodic Table of the Elements. To understand how to use the according commands I need a documentation of it. What I found was this: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/M-database which is more a summary of two examples with no explanations and starting with the warning "This may be outdated". update and meeting

Hi, I uploaded a new version. It is a follow up on the ctx meeting of last week (in a country side compound in czech with also some remote attendants, daily infrared health scans, an excursion, talks, breaks, food, and the usual have fun with context friends moments). There are a few changes that can affect users numbered 1 and 2 below. (1) During one of the coffebreak discussions we agreed to drop the two units that were never official and are kind of meaningless: 'nc' (new cicero) and 'nd' (new didot). Arthur made some stroing arguments and only Tomas remembered ever entering one of them so there was no resistance. We also considered that in order to enforce the use of si units the 'in' should go away but that has been postponed (it is anyway last in the checked keywords so has no overhead). At some point the "true" prefix might go too (never really used, but no overhead either). (2) Another change is in the \startdocument mechanism. This (already old and rusted) wrapper runs on top of variables but we think no one knows (or uses) that. So, it now is a real wrapper with inheritance and such. It is dedicated to Tomas Hala who had to struggle with the old one but still gave a presentation using it. The second one is about the state of luametatex and the third discusses a couple of things introduced last year (luametatex and lmtx). The tokens talk is for low level tex lovers (or those who need to impress other texies with token speak), and the talk about implementers was probably only useful for wolfgang and me, but who knows. The datatypes are an overview over what is standard in tex and in lua as well as what we have extra on top of that. The seventh talk fits in the 'we also need to have some fun talks', and the eigths one was for a large part a discussion and accompanied by a demo by Hraban. The last one is (of course) also a fun one and (of course) discusses Don Knuths latest font which (of course) is kind of special Anyway, it's all part of the 'we keep going' story, which is why they are in the distribution. (5) We had several talks / discussions about the greatly improved wiki and users are invited to participate in completing the pages that need to be filled in, but I leave that to Taco to summarize. Hi, I got a problem with current LMTX as well as with other versions – while I’m sure it used to work at some point: As soon as there’s a footnote in the caption of a placefigure within a floatcombination, the figure won’t get placed. There’s no problem outside of floatcombinations or with floatcombinations without footnotes. Please let there be an easy fix... Force bottom float to be at the bottom

Hi, I'm defining a bottomfigure with default=bottom, but it does not always seem to work (example below). If the float does not fit on the page, it appears instead in the top of the next page. Can I force it to be in the bottom of the next page? That is, can I setup a float that is always at the bottom of the page? How do I specify a fallback to Symbola for the playing card range?

I want to use the Unicode Character PLAYING CARD ACE OF SPADES in a ConTeXt document. Because of the way the source document is created it has to be as the actual unicode character itself, rather than a reference to a specific character in a specific font. Here's what I've tried, but it doesn't work: \definefontfallback[mainface][rm][Symbola][preset=range:playingcards,force=yes] \definefontfamily[mainface][rm][LibertinusSerif] \enabletrackers[fonts.missing] \setupbodyfont[mainface] \starttext 🂡 Testing! \stoptext The PLAYING CARD ACE OF SPADES character does not show up in the output PDF. Access violation

Dear developers, I am using ConTeXt LMTX version 2020.09.05 21:18 on Windows 46bit. I have a large project for which I can reproduce an access violation: mtx-context | fatal error: return code: -1073741819 Unfortunately, the error vanishes as soon as I alter any detail in the project's source code. The access violation happens always at the same location. I have produced a log file for which I have enabled \tracingall just before the error happens. I suspect that the error is triggered due to tagging information written to the PDF (\setuptagging[state=start]), because disabling tagging prevents the error. \definefontfamily not finding fonts

Did something change with regard to \definefontfamily recently. I can find the fonts using mtxrun --script fonts. problem embedding TABLE macros within wrapper macros "to reduce repetitive complexity")

I have a number of slides using \...framedtext blocks to break the slides into panes within a TABLE environment (TMI: not in MWE; merely my justification for writing the wrapper macros). When the TABLE macros are invoked explicitly it all works fine and produces a suitable single-cell table with "quux blech baz bar foo" framed; when embedded in macros (whether defined by \def, \unexpanded\def, \define) then it fails with the error "The file ended when scanning an argument. => fatal error: return code: 256. A previous question on the topic seemed to indicate that TABLE was suitable, so I figure that something subtle is wrong as I've invoked the embedded TABLE macros. Any suggestions?
