I know that avoiding lists (especially when they contain columns) would mitigate the problem. But some of my documents need both multiple-column lists and footnotes. Hi, Playing with a pocketbook color epub reader (I just put some manuals on it): - the colors are not bright enough, also not with lights on, why rgb and not cmyk (i only tested pdf) - the viewer is buggy and freezes, color demands more mem i think, but after an upodate it got a bit better - resolution not good enough (yet) But we keep hoping ... Dear List, I would like to ask how to define a command, \same, such that \same{\type{a b c}} produces the same result as its argument does \type{a b c} The naive way doesn't work because it makes all the spaces collapse: \define[1]\same{#1} I would also like to ask whether this could be achieved using the lua interface: \startluacode interfaces.definecommand { name="same", -- catcode/mode/arguments = ??? } Thanks in advance. Dear List, Does anyone know how to set the footer to be "page i/n" where i=current page number, n=total number of page? temporarily move up a section title

Dear List, I'm trying to move up a section title (section b) 2cm upward: \starttext \section{a} \blank[-2cm,force]\ \section{b} \section{c} \stoptext The empty space (\ ) after the \blank is necessary here, without which the \blank does nothing. What does "effect" mean? Why does "effect={}" embolden the fonts even though nothing ({}) is given as arguments? 2. Similarly, what does "width" do? \switchtobodyfont behaves differenctly with splitted parameters

Dear List, after hours of debugging, I finally found out that \switchtobodyfont[face, 20pt] does NOT behave the same with \switchtobodyfont[face]\switchtobodyfont[20pt]. In my case the latter is the correct one, while the former does nothing but falling back to latinmodern. Does anyone know when or why \switchtobodyfont behaves differently with splitted and joined parameters? Thanks. Best, Sylvain

ConTeXt Linux installation issues (due to GLIBC dependency)

Hello All, I am having a situation where I have to install and run Context in a Linux machine but the machine(s) have only RHEL 7.6 (which comes with only GLIBC_2.17). >From the initial error logs it appears that Context needs minimum GLIBC_2.23. Therefore, I did the following work around and it almost worked ! (there were no more GLIBC_2.23 errors and installation was progressing well...) , till it did not... :-( Any tips or suggestions to try would be indeed very helpful. \section with userdata

Dear List, it is known that we can supply additional userdata like authors to \startsection: \startsection[title=Title][author=Someone] so that the author can be included in the table of contents using \structurelistuservariable{author}. Now I would like to do the same with \section, but according to the wiki <https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/_section>, \section doesn't seem to accept any additional parameters like \startsection does. Does anyone know whether there is a workaround to let \section accept userdata parameters? Thanks! Best, Sylvain

Works in ConTeXt, fails in LMTX

Some more details on the font inclusion problem I posted about the other day. This code: ---begin--- \definefont[fontCoverTitle][name:brushwood at 94pt] \starttext This text in default font. \fontCoverTitle{EXAMPLE} \stoptext ---end--- works as expected in ConTeXt ver: 2020.03.10 14:44 MKIV beta fmt: 2020.4.18 int: english/english but fails (the brushwood font isn't included) in ConTeXt ver: 2020.11.05 23:01 LMTX fmt: 2020.11.7 int: english/english If I change the font name to "heros" then it works in both. So I re-ran mtxrun --script fonts --reload and mtxrun --script fonts --list --all --pattern=brush lists brushwood and brushwoodsemi but it still fails. So I'm not quite sure what to look at next. Get section's uservarialbe inside the section

Dear List, I have sections tagged with authors: \startsection[title={Title}][author={Author}] ... \stopsection The authors were to be included in the table of contents using \structurelistuservariable{author}. Now I would also like to mention the authors inside the sections, but \startsection[title={Title}][author={Author}] \structurelistuservariable{author} \stopsection doesn't work. How to define a {\bf}-compatible fake-bold switcher?

Dear List, I'm using a weirdfont that does not have a pre-defined bold variant but still want to emboldening short extracts of text occasionally, so I've defined \defineeffect[thicker][alternative=both,rulethickness=0.3pt] \define\fakebf{\effect[thicker]} but in situations like {\fakebf \definedfont[weridfont] 1 2 3 \definedfont[modern]4 5 6} the "4 5 6" is faked bold even if latinmodern has a proper bold font. Could anyone help me define a {\bf}-aware version of \fakebf which can render the "4 5 6" in the example above in latinmodern's bold? Thanks in advance. Best, Sylvain

How to quote the section names in advance like the table of contents?

Dear List, say I have three sections in the document: \section{foo} ... \section{bar} ... \section{baz} ... Now I would like to auto generate a heavily customized table of contents like the following text, which cannot be done by the stock \placecontent in general, and put it into the preface: This book has 3 sections: foo, bar, and baz. fancybreak fails in LMTX

Hello all, The following example produces the expected output in MkIV, but fails in LMTX (both dated 2020-11-07). The modules directory was copied into the LMTX tree from the MkIV tree, and the log indicates that the module is loaded. It gives no other clues. I wonder whether it would be possible to add the invalid keyword (and related command) to the error message. Problem using a TTF font

This, I'm certain, used to work with an LMTX from the beginning of the year but I've upgraded to "ConTeXt ver: 2020.11.05 23:01 LMTX fmt: 2020.11.6 int: english/english" and now it doesn't. I have a single .tex file in a directory, containing: ---begin--- \definefont [TwelveC] [file:Bondi12CPlus.TTF at 14pt] \starttext Keycaps: \TwelveC 123.45 \tf and back again \stoptext ---end--- In the same directory I have the TTF font file which can be obtained from <https://www.educalc.net/2336507.page>. It is calculator keycap images for use in documentation. In the PDF I get just blank space where the keycaps should be and Adobe Reader's document info seems to think there is only one font in the file i.e. the keycap font didn't get embedded. However, the console output includes the lines: mkiv lua stats > result saved in file: 12C_test.pdf, compresslevel 3, objectcompresslevel 1 mkiv lua stats > loaded patterns: en::1, load time: 0.000 mkiv lua stats > loaded fonts: 3 files: latinmodern-math.otf, lmroman12-regular.otf, bondi12cplus.ttf mkiv lua stats > font engine: otf 3.111, afm 1.513, tfm 1.000, 8 instances, 3 shared in backend, 3 common vectors, 0 common hashes, load time 0.132 seconds mkiv lua stats > font embedding time: 0.006 seconds, 2 fonts which suggests LMTX thinks it loaded the font but decided not to embed it for some reason. Hello, I am trying to run mtxrun in a batch process and read the available documentation here - https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Running_ConTeXt_without_a_shell My usecase is being able to create PDF docs based on the input data that comes in a JSON format (in a continuous batch process). In ConTeXt, thanks to the Lua engine, I am able to inject a JSON read from a file - and use the JSON in the tex file (here variable `tab` holds the JSON). How do I make this as a continuous webservice - in comes JSON and out comes the PDF ? \startluacode require("test-json") \stopluacode The name of the document is \ctxlua{tex.print(tab['documentName'])} Any tips or pointers would be much appreciated. Just in case you might wonder, the actual code requires "--purgeall". Is there no way to save that in the .tuc file for later runs? math symbol for "is an element of"

A quick question for the ConTeXt mailing list: Other than typing it directly (or cutting and pasting it), how does one get the character ∈ (in case this gets garbled in emailing, this is supposed to be the mathematical symbol that looks more or less like an epsilon, and which is the mathematical symbol for "is an element of" a set). \showmathfontcharacters gives the following information about it: U+02208: ∈ ∈ element of width: 524262, height: 426798, depth: 33798, italic: 0 mathclass: relation, mathname: in I'm not completely sure how to read this information, but if I read it correctly, perhaps this character should be gotten with \in. Also, the Basic Math page of the Wiki (https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Math/basic) states that you should be able to type this character with "\in". But that doesn't work (even inside a formula), since \in is used for references in ConTeXt. And in fact the link on the Basic Math page for \in takes you to the explanation of \in as used for ConTeXt references. This is a very common character in mathematics, so I wanted to ask: what is the recommended way to type this character? (I'm hoping to avoid having to cut and paste the character into the document every time I want to use it. And I don't have a utf enabled keyboard that would allow me to type this symbol readily from the keyboard.) Thanks in advance, Sciurus

Hello again, still struggling with indexes. (1) \setupregister’s before and after go around the indicator. e.g. \setupregister[][indicator=no,after={XX}] never shows that XX, since after is only used after the indicator, while before also works without. I was hoping for a hook at the end of a section (to add \testcolumn, \blank etc. to work around no.2). Is there any? (2) Page/column breaking is odd in that the preferred breaking point seems to be one entry too early, i.e. the last entry of one letter end up in the next column and the previous column is one line too short. It doesn’t change with balance=yes/no. E.g. p.1 A A A A A A B A B A B A <<<< !? p.2 B C B C B C C C C D C D (3) (How) can I otherwise influence page/column breaking? E.g. - always keep multi line entries together - break before or after some entry (4) Is it possible to combine entries from \index and \startregister[index]? If I use \start/stopregister and have the same index entry within the range or on the same page, I get duplicate pages or page ranges, like 10-12 from \startregister and additionally 11, 12-13 from \index entries, makes at the moment 10-12, 11, 12-13 instead of just 10-13. Why is the textarea not centered by default?

Dear List, \starttext \showframe \showsetups \stoptext This minimal example without further configuration shows that the default value for backspace, textwidth and paperwidth are 2.5cm, 15cm, 21cm resp., which means that the textarea is horizontally 0.5cm off the center by default, and one can indeed see a clear extra margin on the right side. MP background for text typeset by \typefile

Hello, is there a way to draw custom background (via MP) to a text typed by \typefile, which is so long so it spreads over more pages? - I'm asking because I know how to typeset some text via \typefile with: 1. this: \definetyping[Test] [before={\startbackground[background=color,backgroundcolor=blue] }, after={\stopbackground }, ] - which creates a rectangular backround to the text, and the text may spread over pages; 2. or this: \defineoverlay[AnOverlayDefinition][] \definetyping[Test] [before={\startframedtext[background=AnOverlayDefinition, ]% }, after={\stopframedtext }, ] - which allows to define a custom background via overlay/MP, but which encloses the text to be typeset into a framed, and thus doesn't spread over pages. My intention is to "decore" the text typed by \typefile with a "fuzzy" background, which uses overlay/MP. But I am in the sitaution where I am able to figure out MP code just when the text is to be enclosed into \framed. Is it possible to combine both cases? How? Best regards, Lukas

Dear List, I'm trying to put the document title at around .25\paperheight by inserting a \blank: \setuplayout[topspace=0cm, header=0cm, height=\paperheight] \starttext \blank[.25\paperheight] foo \stoptext But the "foo" still appears at the very top. Does anyone know why it behaves like that, or whether there is a more authentic way to put the first word at .25\paperwidth than inserting a tiny invisible space before the \blank? Thanks! Bug: context/mtxrun makes Firefox eat up cpu

Hi, sorry if this is not the best place to file a bug but I found no working bug tracker for context. Environment: Manjaro 20.1.2, context 2020.09.20 23:02, firefox 82.0 Step to reproduce: 1. `firefox --safe-mode # start firefox without add-ons` 2.a`context --version # or --help, or without arguments` 2.b or: `mtxrun --script font --list --all` Expected behavior: Nothing surprising should happen. Actual behavior: Firefox suddenly eats 100% of cpu I've noticed that `context` symlinks to `luametatex`, but the latter itself does not trigger the bug, neither do `luatex` or `latex`, so I believe this is a context-specific thing. Hi. I've just read in the LuaMetaTeX manual that --permitloadlib allows loading compiled (.so/.dll) libraries. What does --errors and --noconsole do?

Dear List, I was reading workflow-mkiv <http://www.pragma-ade.nl/general/manuals/workflows-mkiv.pdf> and have found the '--errors' and '--noconsole' arguments which seemed quite helpful since, according to the documentation, "show errors at the end of a run" and "disables logging to the console" while "error reporting mentioned in the previous section will never be silenced". But when I run 'context --errors' for the following document \setuppagenumbering[footer] \starttext hi \stoptext the message setup > error in line 1, namespace 'pagenumbering', key 'footer,' still lies in the middle of a bunch of messages and is not shown in the end. When I add '--noconsole' to the arguments, the error disappears along with all the other messages. So is there any combination of arguments that can let context only display what matters to the user? Is there any intuitive way of handling missing characters?

Dear List, Is there any way to give a sequence of fonts to context and let it try one after another in case of missing characters? Ideally it should be something like \usefallback[font1,font2,font3,...] The methods I've found are all way too complicated for someone who does not really care about fine-grained control over unicode coverage or customizing a typeface with different serif/sans/math/... combinations from different typefaces. How does lua callback work?

Dear List, I'm trying to intervene whenever context encounters a character that it cannot render in the current font. I guess this should have something to do with lua callbacks (pls correct me if I'm wrong), but the document <http://www.pragma-ade.nl/general/manuals/cld-mkiv.pdf> does not seem to elaborate on this. caching remote images

Hello! I'd like to cache images (order of hundreds) from a remote location (not all the time mapped as drive, download speed and amount of data are also the factors). \usepath[dirfile://./resources/**] is likely for speeding up searching not downloading and I don't know when new images are available (when to delete dirlist.* files), as described in workflows-mkiv.pdf. Looks like the cache parameter in \externalfigure is used only if some conversion is going on. I could create a conversion which does nothing or only envelopes JPG in PDF as <id>.jpg.pdf (loading could be faster) and then: if cached file exists use cached <id>.jpg.pdf else if drive is mapped download, convert and cache <id>.jpg else skip file end end The source file with one <id> will never change or I could re-cache from time to time to have up-to-date images cached. Before reinventing the wheel: isn't such functionality or part of it already available? Thanks, Jano

Hello all, I have recently started using ConTeXt. I've found that the distribution includes a proper (cyrillic) hyphenation file for Serbian language, but a complete language support is still not implemented. Therefore, I've added what I think is required, did some testing by putting changed files in my texmf-local, and the result looks fine. There is only one thing that requires a decision from the development team. Serbian language uses two scripts: cyrillic and latin. Context language codes are using 2 letters for identification. So I'm not sure how to include both scripts. What I'm sending now is a cyrillic script implementation, using the code "sr". It is trivial to generate (completely automatic) latin script version of these changes, once it is decided how to label it. Best regards, Ivan

About filling paths, unfill, etc.

A syntax sugar for ConTeXt

Dear List, I'm experimenting with a new syntax for ConTeXt and would appreciate it a lot if you could give some opinions/advice on it. https://github.com/champignoom/luax Details in the README. Basically it's lua code faking tex, while remaining a decent programming language, and saving keystrokes to the level of tex compared to \ctxlua -only codes A major motivating example is the table. There are multiple implementations of table inside and outside ConTeXt, each of which uses its own ad-hoc syntax, but at the end of the day they're just mimicking 2d arrays with some variations. Hi, I might have uploaded a new version by accident so be careful when you update. Make a backup first. Sorry, The test suite compiles, which doesn't day all is ok as i just run it. There are no funcional changes, only a bit of conceptual reworking of some internals in the process of adapting to new features as well as protection, so \starttext \start \def\framed{oeps} \stop \stoptext is permitted, but when you run with context --overloadmode=warning you get a warning and with context --overloadmode=error the run aborts. Here is a user macro example: \frozen \def\foo{oeps} \def\foo{oeps} % warning or error \overloaded\def\foo{oeps} % okay eventually all system macros will be way more protected, being primitive, permanent, immutable to mention some of the possible properties. It's work in progress as you can imagine some pitfals and in order for it to work well quite some has to be flagged. Also, I have to play with some related additions. (This version also makes more extensive use of some new macro features but that's for later.) I'm trying to get quotation marks at the beginning of each new paragraph in quotations (in ConTeXt Mk IV), as is the convention in English. Here's a minimal working example of what I have tried: \setupdelimitedtext[quotation][repeat=yes, middle="] \starttext \quotation{\input knuth } \stoptext However, it doesn't put left quotes at the start of each paragraph the way I'd like it to. I got this approach from the wiki page https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupdelimitedtext . However, I'm guessing this may have been only for Mk II since the \setupdelimitedtext doesn't seem to do anything here. (From what is said above on the wiki page, it looks like this might be only for Mk II, but I can't t tell.) I have searched the mailing list and stackexchange but haven't found a solution. I'm guessing that there's a simple way to do this that I am just not aware of. I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer me (and I'd be glad to put the solution into the wiki if that's appropriate, too). Thanks, Sciurus

index entries postponed if sections are empty

Hi, I‘m despairing about my index – some sections contain only an image (\externalfigure), but I need to set several index entries for the image contents. The index entries get postponed until after the next chapter. I guess the problem is that there’s no (text) content, but \par and \strut didn’t help. The MWE shows that index entries in empty sections are ignored, i.e. “Something” is supposedly only on p.6: \usemodule[visual] \starttext \dorecurse{5}{% \startchapter[title={\recurselevel}] \dorecurse{5}{% \startsection[title={\fakewords{3}{5}}] \index{Something}\index{A\recurselevel} } \stopchapter } \completeindex \stoptext What can I do? context.delayed is incompatible with some functions

Dear List, I was reading Typesetting in Lua using LuaTEX <https://www.ntg.nl/maps/41/11.pdf>. By playing with the examples in the article, I found that `context.chapter(context.delayed("one"))` does not render the delayed text properly, while `context.bf(context.delayed("one"))` does. I would like to ask whether this difference is by design and, if not, whether there is any systematic way of giving delayed arguments to `context.chapter`, where by "systematic way" I'm referring to a proper use of the existing definition of "\chapter" instead of any faked duplication of it that visually resembles a chapter title. troubles with \enablemode

Hi @list, I don't fully understand the \enablemode mechanism. Given this MWE: \startmode[test] \setupframedtext [foregroundcolor=white,style={\tfa}] \stopmode \starttext \startframedtext ceci est un texte \stopframedtext \enablemode [test] \startframedtext ceci est un texte \stopframedtext \stoptext I cannot see the expected effect when I compile, that is both texts are in black. Asymmetrical Column layout leads to an extra blank page

Hello All, I am new to this community and am really excited about the possibilities with ConTeXt. My question is related to the thread - https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg92767.html (the suggested solution did not work, unfortunately) After trying out various options, I am faced with these 2 (sub-optimal) choices - 1. Extra Blank page with Asymmetric Columns in the next page (with the \subject{} uncommented) 2. No Blank page with Symmetric Columns (with the \subject{} commented) 3. page=yes / no - does not work (same outcome as above) I am not sure the role of \section or \subject in this matter (seems to be somehow interfering with asymmetrical columnset). \usemodule[newcolumnsets] ... % \subject{} \definecolumnset[soi1][n=3, distance=3mm, page=yes] % \definecolumnset[currency][n=3, page=yes] \setupcolumnset[soi1:1][width=.25\makeupwidth] \setupcolumnset[soi1:2][width=.30\makeupwidth] \setupcolumnset[soi1:3][width=.45\makeupwidth] Any tips, help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Line numbering skips lines

Hi all, in a typing environment, I have the problem that not every line is numbered: \definetyping [code] [numbering=line, escape={@[,@]}] \setupcolors[state=start] \definecolor[nonsigpart][r=.7,g=.7,b=.7] \defineframed[nonsig] [location=low,frame=off,background=color,backgroundcolor=nonsigpart] \starttext \startcode lorem ipsum @[ @] @[foo@] @[\nonsig{bar}@] dolor sit amet \stopcode \stoptext This will number * the first and last lines, containing normal text * the third line containing nothing at all * the forth line containing `foo` inside an escape sequence It will skip * the second line containing a space character inside an escape sequence * the fifth line which produces text with a gray background Why does it skip those lines? how to set overprint

Hello, whatever I try, I cannot get the overprinting right (checked in Output Preview of Acrobat). Even overprint-001.tex from the test suite (2020-09-19) doesn't seem to have it right (latest beta). How can I invoke an extra run (as mentioned at http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/mmodes.pdf#search=last) to be able to use the *last mode in the code above? The other question is that the sample above works fine in Linux. I guess macOS would be also fine. But in Windows (Win7 in my case), I get garbage for "¿". "chcp 65001" in the .bat file doesn’t make any difference. How can I get non-ASCII chars displayed right? (Echoing UTF-8 characters in the same batch file works perfectly right.) Hi, all. I try to place a row number into the first column of my table. (One difference: \contextkind is defined in file context.mkiv installed via first-setup. It is not defined in the file of the same name installed as part of LMTX. Hello, I went into some troubles with cutafter. Must have missed something obvious. \starttext \startMPpage path p[]; p1:= origin -- (100,0); p2:= (50,-50) -- (50,100); draw p1; draw p2; draw (p1 cutafter (p1 intersectionpoint p2)) withcolor red; \stopMPpage \stoptext Can someone explain me why the whole path p1 of this MWE is in red? space between chapter and chapter number (in words)

I wonder if someone could explain to me what controls (or how to control) the space between Chapter and chapter number in my TOC given the setup I have. At the moment I get ChapterOne instead of Chapter One, and I do not know what is causing that. Here is my set up (at least all the parts that I think are controlling the appearance of Chapter Number in the TOC). Am I missing something? Filler rules

Good afternoon! I am dealing with a book, which has a short black rule under the title of the chapters. I see, that the old rule mechanisms are no more available in LMTX and are replaced by fillers. Now with the following setup, I would expect a 50mm line placed centered. Hoewever this seems not to work in this way. Hi, There haven't been lmtx updates for while now but there is a reason for it. On my machine I have luametatex 2.08 (so we jump number) which is in terms of typesetting the 20201010 version. That version has some reorganized internals, most have to do with consistency in the token interface at the Lua end. Of course there are some new and improved things too but those will be revealed in articles or manuals or the development status documents (already on my machine but they need checking). However, around that date I also decided to play a bit with some pending features: extended macro definitions and frozen macros. The first has to do with extensions to the macro definition code. Some are already present for a while, others have been added. The challenge there is to make defining macros somewhat more convenient and at the same time get rid of often too confusing error messages when a user does something bad with arguments (those foo_bar_whatever kind of things which might look impressive but often is pretty ugly). Of course that only makes sense when we keep the current performance: only gain, no pain. But, it also means that we need to adapt quite some code in order to benefit from it and when I started doing that one quickly ends up in a chain reaction: from a dozen files to over 100 and fives times that amount pending. But it's actually kind of fun (also for users I think). And hopefully Wolfgang will find my many errors. In parallel I played with the other feature: some kind of protection against macro abuse. This is actually related to the above because when you want to see macros with readable names in error messages, you cannot protect them with underscores and other ugly tricks that at the same time make stuff unreadable and ugly. We have a chicken and egg issue there. Anyway, the reason for this mail is that I want to warn users that the next lmtx release will use several protection mechanisms. Checking will for now be off by default but one can bump the level of protection at runtime. Just to give you an idea: we have primitives that can get a heavy protection against overload. We also have macro package system commands and these can get a pretty hard protection too. Commands defined by users (using \define...) can be treated less strict. Of course we also have all kind of runtime (temporary) macros that we have to protect (freeze) but also be able to redefine when we want to (think of variables). Then we have properties that are not primitives but nevertheless need the same strong protection, think of predefined counters, dimensions etc. So, you can imagine that there is some work involved in getting all that up and running. A side effect of that is that occasionally I notice some undesired hack or something that needs attention. The good news is that this probably can be pulled off without a real hit on performance. However, one side effect is that when users enable this (off by default) mechanism the might run into messages (when only warnings are enables) or errors (when they go for the full package). Now, in order to get this working well (as intended) I'd like users who then run into issues to make small examples that we we add to the test suite (unless of course they decide to fix the style, simply because they figure that they did something wrong). You're warned. So, when the next lmtx hits the web, make sure that you keep the old tree because one never knows where I mess up. I don't know when I'll upload. After all Wolfgang and I need to come to the conclusion that it's the way to go. More later, Hans PS. When doing this one runs into quite interesting conceptual issues, even in a system like context that is rather structured. But this is also why the final solution needs somewhat more work that one thinks when one starts with it. Hello, trying to reproduce the hand-printed original as close as possible I'm using \setupcharacterkerning. I can match character kerning, but inter-word spaces are different. What is the right option, command or feature to change it for current font and/or in the font definition? I haven't found any. I would just replace the "first ConTeXt document" section with a link pointing to First_Document, section Create a ConTeXt file, because newcomers are likely to begin with that page anyway. Maybe using the same example would make sense? It would be also worth to index it in the Basics index. The correct way to add emphasis to text using italics

I've seen in several articles on the Wiki, some differences about how this is done, and I'm confused about the differences: *Font_Switching* says: "There is a font switch \em to emphasize text. This is somewhat special: it does automatic italic correction and changes the alternative depending on the current alternative. For example, if the current font alternative is normal (i.e. upright), \em switches to slanted; and if the current font alternative is slanted, \em switches to normal." And using \definebodyfontenvironment[default][em=italic] to use italic instead of slanted; for OpenType fonts, recommends using \definefontfeature[default][default][itlc=yes] to also activate the italic correction. However, this seems not to work in x(ht)ml export. If you go to *Export*, it says: "Also note that switches like \em don’t translate into output structure, you need to \definehighlight[emph][style={\em}] and use as \emph{emphasized}." This is what I'm currently using. Other parts of the Wiki show a similar solution, but using style=italic, or style={\it}; I've seen others, but now I can't find them. Could you please guide me as to where is this documented in the manuals? Is there any particular reason to choose any of these approaches above the others? What is the recommended option if you want to have the \em properties for emphasized text, but works for BOTH pdf and x(h)tml export? oldstyle numerals in STIX Two Math

I am trying to get the STIX Two fonts to display oldstyle numerals. I have the oldstyle numerals in STIX Two Text, the problem is the math font. Modules installation in a ConTeXt LMTX distribution

Hello everybody, on my computers (a MacBook Pro with macOS 10.13.6 and a Mac mini with macOS 10.15) I have installed a ConTeXt Standalone distribution and a ConTeXt LMTX distribution. However, while following the directions contained here https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules#ConTeXt_LMTX the procedure to install the modules in the LMTX is not successful. Join Foundation to Support ConTeXt for the next 50 Years

Hello, In order to keep ConTeXt maintained for the very long term future, I am wondering if there a possibility to join a foundation like the Apache Software Foundation, Linux Foundation, etc. Also perhaps more to a more liberal license so there can be commercial use of ConTeXt with some of it trickling to as code contributions, wider usage which may further translate to support and consultancy work for those familiar with ConTeXt. If commercial system uses ConTeXt as part of their system there is a chance that is it is in their best interest to maintain it also long as these systems are in operation. Also perhaps it might be best than just depend on TeX maybe fork TeX and improve it in a ConTeXt dependent way. This way ConTeXt more feature-rich and easier to maintain than carrying the technical burden of TeX. There are system like SILE typesetter (https://sile-typesetter.org/) which are developed from the ground up and also The Tectonic Typesetting System ( https://tectonic-typesetting.github.io/en-US/) This is just some ideas which I thought might be worthwhile considering. help with filename containing spaces

I invoke it with: context --purgeall --arguments="pathname={~/}" ~/a But in Windows, the actual invocation involves a loop in a batch file. Without the loop, it would read (for drag and drop): context --purgeall --arguments="completepath=%~dp1" file-above.tex I don’t get the attachment only with the file that has spaces in its name (the file is also reported as not existing). The file without spaces in the its name is being attached and reported as existing. content of xml node (element) in lua

Hello! Processing XML I want to manipulate content of XML elements inside Lua. I can define the Lua function xml.functions.name(t), where processing happens, and use the command \xmlfunction{#1}{name} to pass the current node #1 from ctx to lua as described in the xml-mkiv.pdf manual. To access the element content xml.text(t,"/element") Lua function is used. However, using the same function xml.text("#1",/element) directly inside Lua doesn't work for me. Node #1 is available, but not the content of /element. \startluacode local node = "#1" local content = xml.text("#1","/color") context.par() context("node: ") context(node) context.par() context("lua: ") context(content) \stopluacode MWE (mkiv, beta) attached. A Spanish introduction to ConTeXt Mark IV

I'm sending it again (I think I'll do it right now): --------------------------------------------- Good morning to everyone. Although I guess it will not be of interest to most of the list members, I wanted to communicate that I have written an introduction to ConTeXt Mark IV in Spanish, which can be downloaded at https://webs.um.es/jal/docs/introCTX.pdf. Its title is "An Introduction (not too short) to ConTeXt Mark IV". ConTeXt is a wonderful document composition system, but there is not much literature to help you get into it, hence my initiative. The problem is that I've only been using ConTeXt for a short time and still have many doubts, so it's possible that the introduction may contain errors. As it has been written in Spanish I don't think many of you will be able to read it, but I would appreciate, of course, any suggestions for improvement. The document is, on the other hand, free and anyone who wants to include it in any ConTeXt distribution can, of course, do so. Also, if anyone wants the source files, I have no problem providing them. I have not based my introduction on LMTX because I think that for beginners a more stable system, like LuaTeX, is preferable.
