My ultimate goal is to write a small mathematical kernel in ANSI-C, which is, using [Frama-C](https://frama-c.com/), proven *correct*. To my knowledge, Lua has no similar tool for correctness proofs. Equally importantly, there are a very wide range of very different compilers which compile ANSI-C for an equally very wide range of CPU's. Again, to my knowledge, Lua v5.4 has only one implementation (though this implementation *can* be compiled for a very wide range of CPU's). The problem here is that Mathematicians are inherently very conservative about the concept of "proof" (it has taken well over 2,000 hard years to develop our current understanding). My kernel will be an extensible "proof" engine. For mathematicians to trust it, this proof engine must itself be proven correct (or as correct as currently possible). It must also be simple enough to *see* that it is correct (hence the Literate-Programming approach), *and* (since I can not even hope to prove the compilers are *correct*), there must be many *different* compiler implementations (to show that the results are not artefacts of one particular implementation). Finally, the computational complexity of my proof engine, will be comparable to MetaFun/MetaPost... which I suspect you would not consider implementing in pure Lua. Some things are faster in C. So yes I do need to implement it in ANSI-C wrapped in Lua (so that it can be used from *inside* ConTeXt). Since this is a mathematical tool, "embedding" it in ConTeXt is ideal. As a mathematician writes, what they write gets proof-checked automatically... in the document they are writing, and by the typesetting tool they are using for the finished PDF. :-) ConTeXt (via LuaMetaTex) makes this possible in a way native TeX/LaTeX never could. Placing extra bookmarks?

I have \placebookmarks[chapter] in my doc and all is fine except that I'd like to force an extra bookmark at the top of the list that jumps to the cover page. However there is no chapter title, or other built in style on the cover. I tried inserting \bookmark[chapter]{The Cover} but nothing happened - no error, no bookmark. Any suggestions please? There's no need to bookmark to a specific point - just going to page 1 would be enough. Context install for Apple Silicon M1 mac mini

Hi, I have recently retired my 2012 mac mini in favour of a new Apple silicon M1 mac mini on which I would like to install ConTeXt. I know that their are no ARM binaries yet for ConTeXt but Apple say that intel binaries can be run on an ARM using the Rosetta emmulation software. I tried to download the intel binaries using the install.sh that comes with the context-osx-64.zip file but of course it does not recognise the ARM chip and suggests contacting the mailing list. In some previous emails to the list, in which I was a participent, (see the post "new upload" of 26/11/2020) their was some discussion on how Context could be set up to work on these machines by building binaries using Xcode. I am afraid this is well above my skillset so I was wondering how I could get the Intel binaries and then set up ConTeXt running with the Rosetta emulation software. I should be able to do that. If this is possible, I would be very happy to do some testing and report back my experiences to the list. Best Wishes Keith McKay Scotland, UK

No native arm bins, that has to wait till we have some hardware available. Install Problems with 64 bit ARM Linux

Hi everyone Is there a reason why the arm binaries for ARM Linux use version 2.29 of glibc? My actual debian buster installation is still on glibc-2.28. The x86_64 Linux binaries also use the older 2.28-version which is widely used among many distros. I would be very happy if I could install a 2.28-version on my ARM Linux box. Else I have to compile my own glic... or my own mtxrun... Many thanks for your clarifications Christian PS.: error messages during the install: .../lmtx/bin/mtxrun: /lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.29' not found (required by .../lmtx/bin/mtxrun)

install.sh not working on Linux (Ubuntu 20.04)?

Hi everybody. Is anyone else having problems with recent ConTeXt updates on Linux? Since last month, install.sh isn't doing anything. However, when I go to Pragma ADE's website, I can download newer releases and they work fine (e.g. --permitloadlib works now). I'm not so picky about manual downloads, but I think install.sh is (or was) quite better. I'm on Ubuntu 20.04, in case it helps. Thank you very much. Regards, Jairo :)

Adding syntax highlighting when typesetting from xml (asciidoc/docbook)

Hi, A while ago Hans provided an example of typesetting a document from a docbook source. I'm attaching an over-simplified version of the initial module (a somewhat more complete version exists, but it still needs lots of work) and a minimum working example with XML. I'm not sure how to extend the xml parser to support typesetting from something like this: <section xml:id="_hello_world_in_c_and_context"> <title>Hello World in C and ConTeXt</title> <programlisting language="cpp" linenumbering="unnumbered">#include <stdio.h> int main() { printf("Hello, World!\n"); return 0; }</programlisting> <programlisting language="context" linenumbering="numbered">\starttext Hello world! \stoptext</programlisting> </section> Maybe using the vim module would be the right approach here (since the built-in parser only has support for a limited set of languages), but I'm not exactly sure about the implementation to achieve that goal. I started with \startxmlsetups xml:programlisting \dontleavehmode \startframedtext[background=color,backgroundcolor=lightgray] \obeylines \tt \xmlflush{#1} \stopframedtext \stopxmlsetups but something more is needed to properly handle new lines and to properly pass the text to vim, for example. Combinations not working as expected

Dear list, In the latest version 2020.11.28 13:18 of ConTeXt LMTX, combinations don't seem to work as expected. Example: \starttext \startcombination[2*1] {first}{a} {second}{b} \stopcombination \blank[big] \startcombination[1*2] {first}{a} {second}{b} \stopcombination \stoptext The output is [image: image.png] The layout argument [2*1] or [1*2] does not seem to have an effect and the caption placement for "b" is strange. Problem with word not hyphenating

The word "re-implementation" refuses to hyphenate and consequently stick outs into the right margin. Setting and measuring boxes TeX/Lua

Hello! I would like to set framed boxes, measure their dimensions and proceed based on the measurement. It is a combination of TeX and Lua ends. - Boxes are set on the TeX side. Stacking boxes (hbox, framed, vbox) in Lua looked too complex. - The content of the inner box is set on the Lua side (some computations). On TeX side boxes and their dimensions are accessible, but not at Lua side, until luacode is finished (iterations over boxes happen here). I would say Hans already named the problem in the list: *that is always tricky as what happens is postponing till the group ends*. Do you have an idea how to expand the box sooner or would you use a different approach? Sorry for longer MWE (attached also). Units of xpart and ypart of a pair in MetaFun

Hi, I have been using xpart and ypart to extract these values from pairs of points in a path but I wasn't getting the correct result. I was expecting: pair (2cm, 11cm) to give xpart 2 and ypart 11 However I was getting: pair (2cm, 11cm) -> xpart 56.6929 and ypart 311.8096 After much head scratching and reading the MetaPost and MetaFun manuals, I realised that the units of xpart or ypart are in Postcript points or Big Points (bp), and 1 bp is 1/72 of an inch, and thus to get the values of xpart or ypart in cm I would have to use a correction factor. I had made the assumption that since the x and ypart in the pair was in cm that the result would be in cm, but I see now that this is not the case. Will I have to continue doing this or is there some magic within MetaFun which takes account of the units in a pair and outputs the result of x and ypart in the same units? The MWE belows shows what I have been doing. Orphan issue with \startitemize

Hi, A new upload. Mojca upgraded the build manager and we also updated some machines so all binaries (platforms) should be in sync now. (No binaries for apples M1 and microsofts SQ2 as we don't have these machines, so just good old intel and arm it is.) On my rusty laptop the luametatex manual takes between 10 and 10.5 sec (depending on load). On the raspberry pi 64 bit it takes 32.5 sec (ubuntu, ssd on usb 3). The Windows Linux Subsystem (version 1) takes some 11.5 seconds and the domotica fitlet with a low power AMD A10 needs 27.5 sec.) The ratios match measurements of a while ago. In the meantime the format file got smaller, memory more dynamic and the mem footprint also smaller. I expect a modern intel laptop cpu to need some 5 seconds and a decent desktop less but who knows. It's not easy to squeeze out more (the bottleneck is in the lua code as the (con)tex(t) code is pretty efficient so we pay a price for flexibility). (In the process I saw that I bugged the xetex logo but that has to wait for a next upload. Hardly critital I suspect.) Vertical space when surrounding with textbackground

Hi there, in my document(s) I have enumerations (created with \defineenumeration) and "typing"s (created with \definetyping) and I need to give a specific layout to them. In particular, I want to add textbackground (created with \definetextbackground) and sometimes a sidebar (created with \definesidebar) to them. However, when I surround for example my typing with a textbackground like this \starttextbackground[code] \startCpp ... \stopCpp \stoptextbackground or by putting the textbackground commands in "before=" and "after=" of my typing, then there will be an additional empty line at the end of the typing. Same with the enumerations and when I surround it with a sidebar instead of a textbackground. Often there is even an additional line / additional space before the typing/enumeration. How to surround such things properly? I just want a background to these and a sidebar. No addition spacing / empty lines. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you, Johann

Unexpected underbar behaviour in sections

Hi all, something has changed in the way markings are handled. Hi all, I want to typeset poems in a special way. I want to achieve something like Capitalis quadrata which was used by the Romans in stone. The input files I have to use are written as usually: This is a line, that is a line, and a third line as well I want to typeset the whole poem in the Capitalis quadrata way: THISISALINETHATIS ALINEANDATHIRDLIN EASWELL The whole poem forms one block of upper case letters. No interword spacing. I guess that I can make my hands dirty with lua and write a filter that skips all interpunctation and spaces, converts the whole text to lower- or uppercase and after this use a special font with nice upper case letters. But I need a special hyphenation that hyphenates just were the line ends. Hello, I noticed yesterday that paragraph indenting appears to have changed between LMTX 2020.11.17 & 11.19. Usually the first paragraph after a section heading does not indent, as it does with all subsequent paragraphs. With 11.19 the first paragraph does have an indent. I've had to revert to 11.17. Hello When I compile my file with ConText-Luatex from Texlive 2019 (linux debian) I get the right result. On the other hand with the last version of LMTX I have a 2nd caption above the image (see attached file). It's not on all the pictures, it's random.

Problem with setupcharacterspacing and comma

Hello all, Playing with define/setup/set characterspacing, I have come across some odd, perhaps buggy, behavior. This applies to both MkIV 2020.11.19 11:23 and LMTX 2020.11.19 11:28. The problem is that character spacing is not effected for the left side of the comma character. It is handled as expected for other characters that I have tested, but I have not performed extensive tests. Piecewise margin line

Hello, I want to setup some fancy theorem style for my math notes. For this I want to have a colored margin line next to my theorems. It should look like this: https://i.ibb.co/F6L59pD/idea.png The line should stretch over the whole theorem, not just the first line. (But the latter would be a beginning, though.) Section head placement wrong when the after key is used

Hi list, I have successfully managed to get a vertically-oriented page number in words in the margins, but NOT with the number prefixed by the word 'page'. I thought I would be able to do this by adding viewerprefix=Page (mentioned on the wiki for \setupuserpagenumber) but it gives me no result. Any thoughts on how I can achieve this? Hi all, one student of mine asked me for a help with installation TeXlive (from http://www.tug.org/mactex/mactex-download.html) on her MacBook Air 16 with macOS Catalina. Despite the fact that the site states "All install packages are developer-signed and notarized by Apple.", she got: "Cannot be opened because its from unidentified developer, MacOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware." Hello list, About two months ago (2020-08-26) I described a difference between LMTX and MkIV in the setting of index registers entries, and more particularly, in the trimming of text to fit the available width therein. I have now created a smallish example to demonstrate the problem. I do notice that the problem is very sensitive to the width settings, and slight variations in width create different results with both engines. I have to invoke ConTeXt as ($source.tex has the content described above): context --purgeall --environment=$source.tex $source.xml But this approach has two shortcommings. It always generates a single file and using the same file name (\jobname.pdf). Is there no way to get the file with the outputfilename set to \jobname-presentation? Hi all, I hadn't upgraded in a couple of weeks because I was in the middle of a project. Now that I'm up to 2020.11.08, I have a problem: I can't load my third party modules; they all throw an error. The error message is Use of \syst_modules_setup_yes doesn't match its definition So I guess it's the way I have used setupmodule in my modules. I tried to find and understand the new code by comparing file-mod.mkvi vs file-mod.mklx, and it should be around l. 117-131 of this file, but I don't quite see what needs to be changed. A line such as \setupmodule [scale=1,font=GreekDidot] for my t-ancientgreek.mkiv works fine with the --luatex switch; in lmtx, context chokes on it. What is the new incantation for modules? Thomas

Hi, I apologize for sending more or less the same message as last week, but it went unnoticed on the mailing list. To sum up, looks like that install.sh cannot fetch the openbsd 6.8 amd64 binaries. I am aware of the *tma issue noticed by some list users, but since I am ripping of anything in my /usr/local/context/ tree before upgrading, shouldn't be an issue. Any help really welcomed, since texlive context package doesn't compile either on my computer, an issue the packager spend time on it and couldn't recreate/resolve. This means I am stick with compiling via ssh on a debian box. Fatal error 11

Hi Hans, With the latest LMTX (current version: 2020.11.13 19:13), a project (which used to typeset correctly until last week) cannot be typeset anymore. I did try to typeset smaller parts of my files but this did not help: I keep getting fatal error: return code: 11 and no PDF output. Somewhere in the log I have also error in line 35, namespace 'mathfences', instance 'curly', key 'curly,' where in my file \curly is defined as \definemathfence[curly][brace][command=yes,factor=auto] However this command works fine with LMTX when I use it in a minimal example. How can I get a more clear error message so that I can localize what the new LMTX does not like ? Of course I can stay with mkiv where my file can be typeset without problem, but it would be useful to have error messages which help really the user. Best regards: Otared K.

') document.name = io.read() or '' \stopluacode \cldcontext{document.name} is the name. \stoptext Running it on Linux, I can input non-ascii characters. When running in Windows, if the input chars contains a non-ascii one, document.name is empty. I have no problem passing arguments from cmd with Unicode characters (such as in '--arguments="name={αβγ}"'. I’m using current latest (ConTeXt MkIV 2020.11.08 12:42). LMTX, mathcases and noalign

Dear list, I am trying to switch from MKIV to LMTX. I've just found a discrepancy with the following code which puts space between two lines in a math alignment. This minimum breaking example uses \startcases, but the same problem arises with other alignment macros. \starttext \startformula \startcases \NC 1 \NC if not null \NR \noalign{\vskip2ex} \NC 0 \NC if null \NR \stopcases \stopformula \stoptext This snippet works fine with MKIV but breaks in LMTX (see attached log file). Is this a bug in LMTX or is there another way to insert space between two lines? I've already tried different other solutions, but none seems really appropriate: - \intertext produces a vertical space of at least 3 lines and I haven't been able to make it smaller; - adding an empty line (\NC \NR) produces a smaller space but I am unable to reduce its height below a minimum value (roughly a line); - adding a \vrule to the above or below line works fine but it needs some calculation depending on the content of the line. problems with signature fields

Other tools sign the PDF document not producing a valid signature (Acrobat cannot read or validate it). I’m afraid this is also the same issue that AutoFirma (a e-signing tool developed by the Spanish government [https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html] has with these signature fields. When both objects are merged in one (as Acrobat Reader does when saving a copy), both tools generate documents contaning signatures totally unproblematic to be read validated by Acrobat. I suggested merging both objects back in 2017. You told me that simplifyng this would introduce too much complexity in ConTeXt only to save some bytes. Back then, I thought it was an minor improvement. Now I realized that this two objects for signature fiels are only valid for Acrobat. I wonder whether this improvement might be also easier to make in LMTX. Would it be possible that signature fields may have only one object, so that mupdf-gl and other tools have no problem signing fields PDF documents generated by ConTeXt? UTF-8 characters being dropped from typefile

Sorry for this really, really basic question but... I have the following 3 line source file: \starttext \typefile{test-listing.txt} \stoptext The file "test-listing.txt" is UTF-8 and includes the character U+25B8 (black right-pointing small triangle) which is being dropped from the output. The console shows: fonts > checking > char ▸ (U+025B8) in font 'LMMono12-Regular' with id 8: missing Which explains why the character is being dropped. What I don't understand is why is LMMono12-Regular being used? I thought I had read somewhere that TeX Gyre fonts were now the default (I'm on ConTeXt ver: 2020.11.05 23:01 LMTX) ? If not, is there an installation level config setting to make them the default or do I need to work out the relevant \start ... \stoptypescript commands? According the MetaFun manual <http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/metafun-p.pdf>, "embedding such a graphic is done by: \externalfigure[graphic.123][width=4cm]", but the following example produces an empty page: % test.mkxl \starttext \externalfigure[test.123][width=4cm] \stoptext % test.123 draw fullcircle scaled cm withcolor black; Does anyone know how to properly embed a metapost image into a context document?
