Caption size of math

Hello everybody! I use a ConTeXt beta that is a week old or so on teTeX. When I change the caption size to small with \setupcaptions[style=small] I get small text as I want, but the size of math in captions are at the normal size. How should I do to get even the math in the smaller font? Emacs color definitions for ConTeXt

Thanks to Hans and Giuseppe for your fast reply. For all emacs users I included a file, which contains the context color definitions of rgb.txt. Select the menu Edit->Text Properties->Display Colors and take a look. You may find it useful. Peter

Floats in Columnsets

reusing metapost graphics

Hi: I'm designing a year's worth of English lessons for some Japanese kids, and I'm using Metapost and ConTeXt to generate flashcards for vocabulary training. I have a few questions: (1) I want to keep my Metapost figures defined in a ConTeXt environment file so that I can recall them as I need in future lessons. Is there anything wrong with this approach? (2) How do I make a Metapost figure defined in a ConTeXt file reusable? Do I need to wrap the definition of the figure in a macro so that the figure is recreated everytime I need it? (3) With \useMPgraphic, is there any mechanism to scale the image as with \useexternalfigure? If this is all in the documentation, I apologize. (I would appreciate a pointer to the documentation though :-) )

Umlaute, texnansi

Hello there, I accidently switched from SuSE to Debian (via Knoppix) and all of a sudden ran into problems. Footnotes at the end of sentences

Style gurus, I am sure there are some experts here. At the end of a sentence I think it is normal for a footnote to be after the full stop. When this is done the spacing to the next sentence is not very large, it certainly doesn't look very good to my eye. ... End of sentence with footnote.\footnote{This is the footnote.} The next sentence..... What is the recognized way of sourcing this. TIA -- Nigel

\framed and \starttabulate

Hi: I wanted to use \framed {\starttabulate ... \stoptabulate } but when I tried it, TeX complained about groupings and missing parentheses. Is there a way to make this work? I switched to \bTABLE, and that worked, but \starttabulate is more convenient sometimes. Thanks Matt

Hi, It appears that Context cannot deal with an \index command in the term of a definition list: \startvariable{sarge\index{sarge}} De groene soldaat \stopvariable In XML documents this may occur: <varlistentry> <term>sarge <indexterm significance="normal"> <primary>sarge</primary> </indexterm> </term> <listitem> <para>De groene soldaat</para> </listitem> </varlistentry> Is it a fundamental problem to enable this in Context? Hello, looking at the newest beta (esp. plus-rul.tex), I wondered about the english translation of lijndikte. In mult-com.tex it is linewidth and(!) linethickness, in mult-con.tex it is rulethickness. Is it possible to agree on one name? Patrick

Formula numbering and counter

Hi, I would like to change the numbering of several formulae as follows: <mathematical expression> (1.1) <mathematical expression> (1.2a) % here is <mathematical expression> (1.2b) % the problem <mathematical expression> (1.3) I don't know how to access the formula counter for the English interface of ConTeXt. (I only know that it is \formulenummer for the Dutch one.) Also, how do you control the counter incrementation to produce (1.2a), (1.2b) and the jump to (1.3) as automatic as possible ? texexec not finding cont-en

I know this has been asked before, but I'm not getting it. I'm installing ConTeXt on Linux (Mandrake 9.0) with teTeX. I've installed the default teTeX distribution that comes with Mandrake. I've installed the latest ConTeXt beta I've edited texexec.ini, commenting out the reference to l:/... I've edited ... what was it ... fmtedit?? darn, can't remember, but I uncommented two lines that refer to cont-en and cont-nl I've run texhash texexec --make en nl texhash I've added to PATH: /usr/share/texmf /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/config I've made cont-en.tex and cont-en.ini executable so far, so good. But texexec --pdf filename.tex returns with sh: line 1: cont-en: command not found so cont-en is either not on the path or not executable, right? Please be explicit: are we talking about cont-en.tex, cont-en.ini, or cont-en.tws? Where is the usual place to put it? When adding to path, is the shell environment PATH variable what's meant? or is there some way within ConTeXt to set a path? What else could be wrong? Gary

Crash in landscape mode [MikTeX]

If you use MikTeX and the 1.10b version of pdfetex, please try this out. If not, you are free to skip or read on :) I don't know why, but this simple piece of ConTeXt-code crashes with the version 1.10b of pdfetex. I use the lastest MikTeX version and the latest ConTeXt beta (13.03). The source worked fine with older versions of pdfetex and ConTeXt releases. All it does is placing two external A4-PDF's on a single landscaped A4 page. As an unregistered (private) user of MikTeX it seems my mail to their support got lost... I included all necessary files and the log-file. Peter

new version, new manuals, new files

Hi, I uploaded a new version (stable and beta are now the same). This version inclused a few patches/extensions discussed recently. There is quite some new support for side floats, column sets have become rather stable (a manual will follow soon). Although a lot of functionality is still 'my little secret' to be revealed when users request it, you can ready find some info in www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals.details.pdf so, this manual has now moved from temp. It has currently some 80+ pages, and will probably tripple in size over time. This manual provides you some info about how to apply the relatively new layer and related things. The idea is that this kind of detailed trickery and/or thinsg not related to structuring will be discussed in details.pdf, while the structuring ends up in the ref manual (i'll pick up that thread soon). I also updated www.pragma-ade.com/show-fil.pdf (made nicer, watch the new image archive), www.pragma-ade.com/show-man.pdf (more manuals, not all yet on the site but i need the file here and it gives you an idea of what is coming), www.pragma-ade.com/showcase.pdf Next in my list of manuals is finishing the correspondence manual (letters and envelops and alike), the pstopdf manual, and a few more. I've been using Simon's installer script successfully of late to install betas, but just ran into the following error (see below). Any ideas or suggestions? Interactive TOC bug?

Hi, In a larger project, I set up an interactive menu that links to the sections of the current chapter. Running out of screen estate, I changed the layout of the TOC to alternative=d. Now all I got was the error message at the bottom of this mail. The error message can be avoided, if the line ...interaction=all.. is commented. Also, keeping that line and using a different alternative=... works. This may be a bug. I searched the mailing list for this, without success. So I do apologize, if this problem had been discussed earlier. Problem with references

I can't get references to work -- maybe I'm making some beginner's mistake. Anyway, the output from the following file contains "??" where the page numbers should have been: %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% \starttext \title [pointer1] {The title} Some text. \subject [pointer2] {A subject} Some more text. typesetting chapter--label for cross references

I'd like to display a cross reference, using a en-dash to separate the chapter number from the text being cross referenced. Mac input encodings

Hi all, Prompted by this weekend's discussion of input regimes, I took a look at the one for the Mac's Western encoding (initiated by Michel Bovani), and hopefully revised it to be nearly complete for characters (missing four in the range 128-255). Mac users might like to take a look at this file, and verify that it does what I suggest. Usage: put the attached regi-mac.tex in your path, and either rebuild your format files (i.e., texexec --make ...), or explicitly \input this file in your source. Hi Hans I am placing metapost figures in the text: \placefigure{}{\startMPgraphic ...... label.top(textext("\tfx \#3"),z0) \stopMPgraphic\loadcurrentMPgraphic{}\placeMPgraphic} The \# macro disappears and nothing shows up in my figure. The same with other characters as \lbrace\rbrace. How come? Do I misunderstand something? It would be a pity if some characters could not be typeset in figures. Thanks for looking into it. naming relative paths within a project

I've got a very short question, but coupled to a very long explanation, my question is: when referencing a component file from within a product file (and given that the component file is stored in the same directory as the product file, which is in a sub-directory below my project file) must I include the relative path of the component file from my project directory, through my sub-directories to my component file, or can I just refer to the component's filename. Now here is the actual example. I've done a little bit of ASCII artwork below showing the directory structure that I'm following. My artwork isn't the best, so I've also include some explanation. Learning ConTeXt: \setupitemize

I'm learning ConTeXt, and I've chosen to beat up on \setupitemize to see how things work. (If the answers to my question are in some doc somewhere, please tell me where it is!) Consider the file below. I expected to see a hairline above the second itemization, and indeed I do. But if I remove the "columns" specifier, the hairline does not appear. Is this the correct behavior, or a bug? Also: what does the keyword "beforehead" do? If I replace "before" with "beforehead" in the example, I get nothing. Is it in the docs somewhere? In the lists of keywords for many commands there are parameters listed that I can't figure out. Some of them seem to do nothing, but I always wonder if they only operate in conjunction with some other feature, or I haven't implemented them correctly. Some of them do something, but I can't figure out what the rule is. Is there a doc somewhere describing the keywords? Is it in the manual and I've missed it? Perhaps someone here will known. The log file from my recent context distribution on Linux web2c is in the attachment. The file mpgraph.mpx is created with correct content (Text1). But next run of metapost does not include it. The only way how to obtain desired result is to run mpost directly mpost mpgraph.mp But it is not possible with the "textext". The instalation is standard. Hi all, I hou also van the Bitstream Charter font and I am looking for a matching monospace. To my mind LuxiMono fits Charter very well but the percepted sizes don't match at all. Standard ligatures in ec encoding

Hi all, I have installed the URW fonts with texfont --batch --encoding=ec type-tmf.dat The \setupbodyfont[pos,10pt] works well, but there is no f-ligatures in the output. The fi and fl are in the character table (in ec-urw-times.tex the \ShowFont shows both), but \showligatures doesn't show these. What is wrong? Greetings Bence Nagy

Hi, I have uploaded a new version of DocbookInContext. This version has a sizable contribution by Richard Rascher-Friesenhausen, with a.o. Metapost graphics for admonitions, a Spanish translation of literal strings by Pablo Rodriguez, and numerous small features. It also introduces backgrounds, a.o. for programlistings, but unfortunately this feature seems to cause spurious page breaks under certain circumstances. In addition the web page has a nice example of how you can customize DocbookInContext by writing your own module, also by Richard Rascher-Friesenhausen. Index questions

I have some questions about the index (register) facility in ConTeXt. 1) I like that ConTeXt automatically breaks the index into portions by first letter, but how do I change the style of the subhead that says 'a', 'b', or whatever? Among other things, I would like these little subheads to be uppercase. 2) Sometimes a topic is referenced at two nearby places in the text. If these places fall on separate pages, I would like the index to mention both of them. If they fall on the same page, however, the index entry is duplicated. I expected texutil to remove duplicate index entries when sorting. Is it supposed to? (This is not a major problem; I can work around it.) 3) Likewise (this is a suggestion rather than a question) it would be nice if ConTeXt automatically transformed a sequence of 3 or more consecutive index entries (such as 10, 11, 12) into a page range (10-12). I realize there is a facility (\startindex...\stopindex) to get these page ranges manually, so again this is not a major issue. 4) If I have the command \seeindex{foo}{bar} and also \index{foo} on page 17, it would be nice if the index could say foo 17 see also bar rather than just "see bar". Is there a way to get this behavior? -- Miller Maley

fontsize in math

Hi Hans, I encountered an issue in fontsizing in math mode that I do not understand. Searched the manual but couldn't find (or missed) the clue. Using the green presentation style but changed to a somewhat larger fontsize by adding: \setupbodyfont[lbr, sans, 17.3pt] % lucidabright typesetting the following text: {abc$abc$abc} --- {\tfx abc$abc$abc} --- {\tfx abc}{$\tfx abc$}{\tfx abc} In the first the abc's have the same size. In the second the math part has kept its size, the other two are smaller. In the third the math part is now so small is doesn't match in size as it did in the first. I would have thought the math would vary in accordance with the \tfx. However, within $'s the font does not follow the outside \tfx, while inside a different size seems to be chosen. I am baffled. hello all, after on-and-off effort, I finally get context + omega working. The result is impressive. hat off to hans and idris samawi for their effort. omega is a tex version that support utf-8 input. it can be used to typeset arabic. here are some of the things I discovers that might be useful to others; my system: context 2003.1.31 omega 1.23.2.1 tetex 2.0 1. using the command texexec --make --alone --tex=omega en fail. you need to recompile omega. get tetex-src-2.0.tar.gz. I am not a programmer, but know enough to hack bit and pieces. also, I cannot assure whether it safe or not. but, it works. do the usual ./configure and make stuff. Hi all, I want to have description placed in marging (location=inmargin) and I want to have description item text wider than width of margin. So the text must be formatted into paragraph. If I use \setupdescription[abc][text={Some long leading text: }] this leading text is typeset in paragraph. If I use \startabc{something after leading}...\stopabc the text "something after leading" does NOT become part of paragraph ans it is typeset in one box (hbox). Columns in itemizations

Hello, following up to a recent post on comp.text.tex I'd like to bring forth an enhancement request for itemgroups: in the current implementation it is not possible to set up itemgroups to use the non key=value pairs settings. IOW, one cannot say \defineitemgroup[myitems] \setupmyitems[each][A] and have the items come up numbered with capital letters. Some keywords (like: joinedup) work, some others (the numbering type ones, for example, or "columns") don't work. For what I can see by looking at the code, this depends on these settings being looked for *not* when setting up the itemizations, but in the actual moment when the \start<itemgroup> is issued (this is for example the case for "columns"). Enhancement request: allow all keywords to work. I think the most straightforward way to implement this is to simply store the keywords and put them as default values when \start<itemgroup> is called (this would even, I suspect, simplify the handling of the itemgroup setups ...) -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Using command in section

Hi all, I'm using private macro for title of section: \setuphead[section][command=\doTitle] and if I typeset inside this \doTitle#1#2 something like (test code): \vbox to 0pt{ \hsize=3cm \hbox{\vtop{#1}\vtop{#2}} \hbox{\vtop{X} \vtop{The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.}} \vss } I get two boxes -- the first (made from #1 and #2) NOT aligning the first lines of vtop's (#1 is higher) and the second, which is aligned as I expect -- both "X" and "The quick..." in the one "line". So I traced data coming into #2 and content of \vtop filled with it and I saw the #2 contains some vertical glue at the beginning. What should I do to avoid this behaviour? Indenting in description

Hello! I have a problem with indent in the description environment (I use the latest beta of ConTeXt). When I have descriptions that are longer than one paragraph I want the next paragraphs indented in the same way as the other parts of the document. Help : pdf figure is black !

Bonjour à tous, I'm trying to switch from Latex + pstrick to latex3 and Metapost (alias context :-) For now, I'm trying to reproduice a Latex + Seminar + pstricks slides. Before to switch to Metapost, I'd like to include the pstricks figure as pdf external file (from eps file) The figure is OK and I can see it with xpdf or acroreqad. But when I use it in ConText, the background is all black. I've been unable to play whith the various option : 2 \externalfigure [01-problematique.pst.pdf] [width=0.4\textwidth, % bfactor=0.9, % raster=0.9, background=screen, % background=color, backgroundscreen=1.0, backgroundcolor=yellow, ] 3 Any idea ? presentation failure

Hi, I tried to begin a presentation, and tried to learn from the best (Hans Hagen in this case ;-) However, I get a failure with the minimal test case below. Some (I think relevant) fragments of the logs are included (sorry for the long mail). I'm using TeXLive with a recent version of context (see dates in the log). Is this a symptom of updating only part of the setup? If so: what parts should I update to get things to work? Some of you may recall that I had trouble with the pos fonts on teTeX a while ago. I switched to TeXLive and there it works. Will try to find out if the problem is related to Mac OS X or teTeX. Hello there, I am absolutely new to this ConTeXt typesetting system. So I think my problems are boring to most of you ... anyway, they are bothering me :-( I've found in the manual how to produce ä, ö etc ... the german Umlaute. but I wasn't succesfull with the sharp s (ß) ... can anyone help? Second ... I am also using gvim as an editor; is there a package supporting ConTeXt with gvim? Thanks in advance, Raimund

more beginner's problems

Hi, ok, here some more problems which I couldn't find a solution in the manual. First the space between two paragraphs. For example \enableregime[il1] \starttext paragraph 1\par paragraph 2\par \stoptext Should come out like two lines with one empty line in between. but it comes out like two lines with no empty line in between. I tried \paragraph, I tried \par and even nothing but an empty line, processing the file with texexec always "glues" the two paragraphs together like paragraph 1 paragraph 2 What is my fault here? Next problem are the high commatas "blah". In german language the first one has to come on the bottom of the line ... but this way the are typesetted like in english ... above. I tried "`blah"', but this doesn't work either. Also adding \language[de] at the beginning doesn't change that behaviour. Can anybody help? Chinese text failed to flow around pictures

when I tried: \placefigure [right] {Some picture} {\externalfigure[temp][type=jpg,width=5cm]} Blah blah ... % These should be pure Chinese characters. In the generated Chinese PDF file, the paragraph right after the figure just runs over the picture like it were not there. But if I append some English words before Chinese, everything would be fine. And \startfiguretext[left] works as expected. Any ideas? Guo

footnote control

Dear Cabinet, A couple of footnote questions: 1. Is there an option for choosing one's own reference mark for any given footnote, like in Plain? 2. Is there a conversion option for the famous nine reference mark sequence (\fnsymbol in LaTeX): star, dagger, double dagger, section, inverted `P', parallel, star-star, dagger-dagger, double dagger-double dagger ? I did not see it in the manual. 3. Is there a way to control the distance between the footnote rule and the firstline of the footnote? 4. ConTeXt places the footnote reference mark just on the outside of the margin. Can I place it inside? Can I indent the first paragraph of the footnote with the reference mark (like in LaTeX)? Unrelated: Can I make an entire document default to oldstyle numbers? (Probably not, since Knuth mapped these glyphs in a strange way). That's the end of the rain shower for now, but I'll be back with more I'm sure;-) Idris

Testing a sample in details.pdf

While I'm testing some examples in details.pdf (http://www.pragma-ade.com/temp/details.pdf) a curious thing happened. Let me assume that I have the following test file (test.tex) which was extracted from details.pdf (p.13) I generated two PDF files, test-1.pdf and test-2.pdf, by the following ways, respectively. 1. The first way Just ran "texexec --pdf test", and got the attached PDF file, test-1.pdf. (Please see the attached file test-1.log too.) 2. The second way (step by step) (a) "texexec --pdf --once test" (b) "texutil --references test" (c) "texexec --pdf --once test" (d) "mpost mpgraph" (e) "texexec --pdf --once test" The curious thing was that the two PDF files were different, especially the embedded MetaPost graphics were different. Expansion problem in natural table

I have an expansion problem in natural tables. I need to have this: \bTD\XMLDBcontinuepartrue\ignorespaces\XMLflush{revremark}\eTD but \XMLflush{revremark} must be expanded. When I do that using \expanded, \expanded{\bTD\noexpand\XMLDBcontinuepartrue\ignorespaces\XMLflush{#1}}\eTD I get errors when I have compound characters: \XMLDBcontinuepartrue\ignorespaces Kleine \dobuildtextaccent\char 127 A{}nderung It should be \dobuildtextaccent{\char 127} A for it to be valid. Or it should be \buildtextaccent\textdiaeresis A In other words, \XMLflush{#1} should be expanded, but not all the way down. How do I get that? I've looked at the verb-XML module, and verb-ini module, and have have seen hints that it may be possible to typeset XML code snippets, such as <table> into the main text. Is it possible to inline such XML expressions into the main text, using the same color setup as has been defined in the verb-XML macros?

table column alignment

More on tables and such: Looking through "The Elements of Typographic Style," the author recommends tables be aligned on the decimal or flush right. If there is no decimal in an entry using the decimal alignment, in effect such a number is aligned as if it had a decimal. What you get is something like: 10 10.2 10.34 I cannot seem to do this in ConTeXt. It seem either all figures must have a decimal, or must not. Bruce

Math Euler and mp-graph

Hello, Hans, all, I'm trying to finalise my euler-math typescripts and type encodings. It seems to work everywhere, except in metapost mode. It's a mystery. My latest math-eul and type-eul are attached, (play along at home! put them in your tex/context/third directory! Does anyone have a clue why metapost/metafun would be inserting something other than a normal mathperiod? That's the only guess I have as to where it might be happening. I spent a morning meditating on mp-form, mp-grph, and the like, but did not reach enlightenment. Can anyone else using m-graph confirm this behaviour? According to Hans' mail from 2002-08-29 ("hyphenation of words with accented characters") the following should work, but it doesn't: \hyphenation{ aus-zu-\uumlaut ben Gro\ssharp -bri-tan-nien } I get: ! Dear syndicate, I heard that there is a bibtex module for context somewhere, but I could not find an m-bib module anywhere in tex/base. Is there a bibtex how-to for ConTeXt anywhere? I have a LaTeX file to insert in the journal and I don't want my *.bib database to go to waste;-) Secondary question: Assuming that there IS a bibtex module, can I place separate bibliographies from a single .bib file for separate chapters. That is, from a single journal.bib, can I generate a separate bibliography for each article? Idris
