hi I have again another metapost problem: I made the following picture: \setupoutput[pdftex] \starttext \setupcolors[state=start] \startMPpage path p; p := fullsquare xysized(2cm,2cm); fill p scaled 2 withcolor blue; path a,b,c; for i=0 step 1 until 9: a:= p enlarged (5mm-10mm*i/9,5mm-10mm*i/9); b:= a enlarged (-10mm/9,-10mm/9); c:= a --reverse b--cycle; fill c withcolor transparent(1,i/9,white); endfor; \stopMPpage \stoptext when I compile it an look at the result then the stripes are overlapping a little bit. how can I do this so that one stripe is next to the other without overlapping,but without a spece between them. greetings severin

I am happy to report some progress thanks to your help. reinstalled the context package; \protectbufferstrue is full of black magic; noticed that there shouldn't be any white space between with and color; Making more changes on the logo definition. Not quite there yet, but on the way. All in all getting better. Even the chart has gone back where it should be (I have no idea what the problem is/was). The draft still doesn't appear. Another question: - how to change the font of the logo text? Metapost problems

Hi, I am trying to insert the same picture in a text at different places and in different sizes. The logo looks like a bicolor square with white text on top of it. Any clues? I also try to have draft written in the right margin. I copied the text showed p156 of the Metafun manual (the second example from the top). Never had any success. Is there anything I am missing? Now weirder (to me at least). A bit further in my doc, I have a chart created with the chart module. I had to comment out the chart code. If I don't, all the logos and all the right margins (where I would like to see DRAFT) are replaced by the chart. And at the location where the chart is included, there is no chart (more precisely, there is no boxes and arrows but the labels are still there, scattered around over the text as an overlay). I am using teXExec 3.1 that comes with Cygwin. Any help is welcome. hyphenation: DIC / Composed Words

Twon questions concerning hyphenation: - I read the section 'composed words' in 'cont-en' and believe I understand it, *but* how do I handle this if my source file is DocBook XML which is typeset using 'DocBook In ConTeXt'? I cannot edit the composed words using the suggested '|' characters (at least not if my source file is processed by some other tool for another output format). - DIC maps the content of the 'url' attribute of <ulink> tags to ConTeXt's '\useURL' and '\goto' which works fine so far. But URLs tend sometimes to be very long and don't wrap at the end of lines automatically. I tried to add '\hyphenation{}' exceptions for every URL but get an error message like '.... is not a character'. Is there a solution for this? hi all I have another metapost probelem: I would like to have a shade effect like this: circular_shade(p,0,transparent(1,.25,white),transparent(1,.75,white)) ; but it seems that this doesn'n work wiht transparent colors. both of the transparent colors get black in the picture. Is there another simple solution to reach this effect? greez severin

I'm having trouble developing a coupling. In the code below, you'll see a skeleton example, after which follows a discussion, and then a bit more code. typing buffers doesn't obey spaces

This is related to Hans' suggestion for typing code next to text in tabulate environment. The following fragment has a slight problem: \definebuffer[CodeSnippet] \startCodeSnippet \starttyping first line second line \stoptyping \stopCodeSnippet When I do a \getbuffer[CodeSnippet] inside tabulate, the empty line is suppressed :( How to fix it (empty lines really do improve readability of the source)? BTW, why it is not possible to have \starttyping/\stoptyping inside 'p' column in tabulate?

Creating List with separate numbering

RandomSeed

Hello everybody. I'm trying to get some special effects using Metafun. The idea is to get slightly different letterheads from run to run of texexec. I tried randomseed and randomized() but, once the value value of randomseed is fix in the source, all further graphics are equally distorted. In other programming languages this is achieved by assigning to the random seed a value related to the current time and date. I suppose that something similar (or even simpler) should be available in TeX/Context, but my expertise seems not enough for this (may be trivial challenge). Could someone help? layer documentation?

Hello Hans and others, is there any layer documentation out there that I have missed? I found some fragments in the metafun manual, the details.pdf and (well, of course!) the source. Where should the layers be hooked in? If I say \setupbackgrounds[text][text][background=relpos], the layer relpos gets repeated; if I use \setupbackgrounds[page][..], the layer won't be repeated, even if I say \setupbackgrounds[page][background=..,state=repeat]. (Yes, I know that I can use \setuplayer[...][state=repeat]; I try to understand what is going on.) So should I always use the [page] background to anchor the layer? Patrick

Font switch and memory

Hi folks, When I get an error message like the following, what exactly am I running out of, and can I make sure there's more of it? I am indeed doing a lot of switching of very large fonts, but the error doesn't show up at some font sizes and appears at others. ! MikTeX hash size limit ?

Hello ConTeXters, First of all I would like to thank you Hans for ConTeXt. It is a great pleasure to use it to write my PhD thesis. I have just upgraded to the lastest versions of ConTeXt and MikTeX and my draft doesn't compile any more: pdfeTeX complains that it runs out of "multiletter control sequences" (see part of the log file below). I did not found what it is nor how to increase it. Maybe someone on this list can give me some advice ? Yours, Seb. Within the comment fields there are words containeng accented letters. <figure> <file></file> <label>Beispiel</label> <copyright>WE</copyright> <comment>Oberfläche</comment> </figure> When saying <\figurelibrary language="en"> at the beginning I get the given example word as Oberfl""ache The same is valid for the language="nl". Dear gang, Ok; this is a post-context problem but I desperately need your help. I created a book cover using ConTeXt/Gamma/eomega in three parts; front, back, and spine. ps2pdf got the colors wrong so I had to use distiller to convert each part to pdf. Per my instructions, in Acrobat, a colleague overlaid the three components and created a final single cover pdf. She sent it to the printer and everything came out fine except the fonts "came out all pixilated and blurry". The fonts are all Type1 and dvips is definitely getting the Type1's I think The printer suggested that Distiller was screen-optimized, not print-optimized. I'll check that when I get home but before I get there I need your advice and wisdom: What things in ConTeXt/dvips/distiller should I optimize to make sure the printer is able to print this thing properly? Are there any questions I can ask the printer? As I get more info I'll try to make things more precise. Aside: Maybe there is way to make a single cover in ConTeXt instead of combining three pdfs in Acrobat (which is a pain). I'd be happy to learn:-) Best wishes Idris

clipping a MetaPost graphic

hi all I made a MetaPost graphic and I want to use this graphic for a background. The graphic is too large and I want to clip it to the size of 84mm width and 54mm height. With "clip currentpicture to unitsquare xyscaled (86mm,54mm)" I get the size I wanted but the clipped field should be placed in the center of the currenpicture. I tried: "clip currentpicture to unitsquare xyscaled (86mm,54mm) shifted center boundingbox currentpicture" but that became not the effect I wanted.How can I shift the clipping area to the center of the currenpicture? thx for help severin

Nath, and problems smashing

Hello, as I might have mentioned before, I'm working on a ConTeXt module that would give part of the functionality available in the LaTeX package Nath; as I'm not really an expert in either of the topics involved, I'm going at it slowly, starting with the simple things; the first thing I implemented was a natural way to write extensible arrows. It came up pretty fine and works quite good, but there seems to be a sizing problem. First of all, please find attached t-nath.tex (the module) and nathtest.tex (a test file). As you may notice if you compile the nathtest document, sub and superscripts to the single-line arrows are much to high or low; browsing about I noticed that in AMS-LaTeX the minus that extends the single-line arrows is "smashed", to prevent this problem; I did try to smash it (replacing \mathop- with \mathop{\smash-}), but it didn't seem to help. Floating error

I have a small problem with ConTeXt's floating meachnism. There are two wide pictures and other narrow pictures in columns, ConTeXt breaks the first page after the first wide picture. \midaligned{\framed[frame=off]{\externalfigure[p1_7.pdf][factor=fit]}} \midaligned{\framed[frame=off]{\externalfigure[p2_1.pdf][factor=fit]}} \startcolumns[n=3,distance=4mm,balance=no] \midaligned{\framed[frame=off]{\externalfigure[p2_2.pdf]}} \midaligned{\framed[frame=off]{\externalfigure[p2_3.pdf]}} \midaligned{\framed[frame=off]{\externalfigure[p2_4.pdf]}} \stopcolumns In this situation the first wide picture goes to the first page, the second to the second page and the rest to the third page (th second picture is just 2cm tall, the columns 10cm on an A4 page). When I inserted the \page command after the first picture, the second picture and the columns are placed well on the second page. If I use the \placefigure[here,force,none] statement, the second picture goes to the third page. It seems to be a ConTeXt-error(?) Greetings Bence

Q: indenting a table of contents

I would like a table of contents to be indented as: 1.1 First Section 1.1.1 First Subsection of First Section 1.1.1.2 .... 1.1.2 hjfhkdsf For a first approximation I used \setuplist [section] [width=2em,distance=1em] \setuplist [subsection] [margin=3em,width=3em,distance=1em] \setuplist [subsubsection] [margin=7em,width=3em,distance=1em] This is not satisfactory, since the distance between the numbers and the title varies for different levels. If I use width=fit, can I access the computed width for the previous level to set up a list? Or is there already an option to achieve this? Thanks in advance Marko

Fit Width View

How do I tell ConTeXt to write the PDF file with the necessary information that acroread opens the PDF in 'Fit Width View'? Error using \starttextbackground.

I want a gray background in a particular column. Hello, I don't know if Idris is following the group (I hope he is), but anyway I have a couple of questions on the support for Greek in ConTeXt, Omega and thus also Gamma. The need is that of typesetting classical greek snippets in a latin (Italian, but could be English) context. Framed paragraph

Hello, I think I'm using the wrong tool. I want a description environment, slightly narrower than the main text, and separated from the main text by a hairlines. If you compile the example below, you'll see that my attempt (apart from looking not quite balanced) will allow a page break between a hairline and the information contained in my description. This rules off the bottom of the page, rather than separating the description from the main text. What I would like is that the description be compelled to have at least a couple of orphan lines of the paragraph before a page break. Introduction to columnsets

Hello, I am working on typesetting a newsletter in ConTeXt. I have been very pleased with ConTeXt so far; I was previously using plain TeX, as I couldn't get the control I wanted with LaTeX. I have been able to do almost everything I wanted with ConTeXt. However, I have been having some trouble with trying to use floats and figures with my two-column layout. Since joining the list, I have heard a bit about columnsets, and they seem that they may provide what I am looking for. I have been able to set some figures, and a masthead, and double columns. However, I was wondering if there was anywhere a collection of information, however incomplete, that could help me figure out how this stuff works, or do I have to look through the source? Besides a few examples in the list archive, there seems to be little. And I don't want to have to ask on the list each time I need to figure out how to do something. I understand that the feature is experimental & that a manual is in progress, but it seems that this is what I want to use. On the other hand, if somebody else has a better grasp of advantages and disadvantages of columnsets vis a vis traditional columns, and could tell me whether or not I am on the right path, I would apprecate that too. auto sizing an intermezzo?

hi, I'm a new convert to ConTeXt from Latex, and i have setup an intermezzo. As i am trying to link everything to my DocBook files, i want to be able to move <quotes> over to ConTeXt and place them in an intermezzo and have the intermezzo automatically size itself. So far i have this: \placeintermezzo [right]{none}{ \framed [height=3.8cm, width=5cm, background=color, offset=5pt, backgroundcolor=quoteBox, framecolor=quoteBox, corner=round, radius=4pt] {\rbox{here is the quote}}} But this has hardcoded width and height. How can i set the width and let the intermezzo size the height to fit. I tried changing height to 'fit' but that didn't work. Any thoughts? Thanks, mark

Hi, often PS and TTF fonts include some common symbols like "registered", "trademark"... Currently i try to build an interface to access them independent from the current font encoding. referencing line numbers of a typing environment

I usually present C/C++ code in a typing environment. If I need to frequently reference statements I put a line number environment around that. Now I would like to use line numbers and experimented a bit with \setuptyping[option=commands,escape=/], but did not yet get the desired results. Any hint is welcome Thanks Marko

But if I use btex, the files are not created. I think I found the reason for this. When texexec calls etex to typeset the labels, the file mpgraph.mp is overwritten with a simple "end." Now, texexec keeps a backup of it but seems to restore it too late. I've moved the specific lines futher ahead. Now everything seems to work fine. Is this a correct patch or am I missing something? Placement of limits in math mode

Hello. When I type $\lim_{k\to\infty} c(k)$ I get lim c(k) k -> oo and not the limit placed as if it were a subscript. How do I change the behaviour so that limits will not be placed below or above "lim" when in inner math mode (between $ and $)? On figures and clipping

Hello, I have some problems with the way to put clipped images in ConTeXt documents; for what I can see the correct way to do it is via something like: \clip [width=6.3cm,height=10.5cm,hoffset=0.5cm,voffset=1cm] {\externalfigure[ciccione_03.pdf]} Now suppose that I wanted to put the above thing zoomed 200%; and here I have two problems: (a) I can't seem to find the proper number to pass on to scale= or factor= in the \externalfigure options (b) AFAICS I need to scale all the clipping parameters as well. Point (b) is particularly annoying; is there a way to "pre-clip" an image, without touching the original file? It should be possible to specify clipping area at inclusion time (LaTeX's graphicx package can do that ...), and therefore in a scale-independent way (this is especially important when the scale factor is something like "max" or "fit" or "broad"). -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

External linked PDF in new window?

I have a showcase-type document in which I have thumbnails of external PDFs which should link to the originals when clicked: \goto{\externalfigure[france][page=2,height=.6\textheight]}[france::] But clicking on this replaces the main document by the new one. I notice that Hans' showcase PDFs (the show-xxx series) don't exhibit this behaviour. There linked documents open in their own window. How's that done?

a common interface for pretty printing

With the xtags-* pretty printing macros, I can't find a common interface for pretty printing. For instance, to typeset my XML code at a small size, and using a grayscale palet, I require three different setups depending on whether I'm using \showXMLbuffer, \typebuffer, or \startXML ... \stopXML. % override xtag-* pretty printing options \definepalet [xtag] [0=grayprettyone, 1=grayprettytwo, 2=grayprettythree, 3=grayprettyfour] \def\ShowXMLBuffer{\bgroup\tfx\showXMLbuffer\egroup} % local override of global verbatim typing \def\TypeXMLBuffer% {\bgroup \setuptyping[option=XML,palet=graypretty,style=\tfx]% \typebuffer \egroup} % global XML pretty printing \setuptyping [XML] [palet=graypretty,style=\tfx,indentnext=no] As you can see, although each is trivial to customize but they don't share a common interface with each other. Mixed page formats

Hi all, I'm creating a usual document with the page format A4 portrait. But I have 2 special cases. a) Some tables and figures do not fit on a portrait page, but should be "landscaped" together with their caption. The page header and footer should remain in portrait format. So, we have a "mixed" page. b) Some pages with figures are printed on A3 landscape, the paper is folded afterwards to fit into the binding. Now: Is there a method to handle that with Context directly without manually creating PDFs and insert them in a second stage in the document? I'd really like to avoid that to get the numbering right. ConTeXt and expert fonts (redux)

Hi, all. I'm trying to come to terms with some expert fonts, and to map a strategy for dealing with them. Right now, I'm looking at the limits described by font-ini, and trying to see if I understand them correctly. Small caps are treated as a style of their own, which doesn't interact with \bf boldface the same way \it italic or \sl slanted do. With some of the pro fonts I'm starting to deal with (e.g., Cronos Pro or Minion Pro), there are small caps for each of \bf, \it, and \bi, as well as the normal \tf typeface. <http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/pdfs/1733.pdf> The existing model can be interpreted this way: | shape | weight|norm |slant|ital |caps | ------|-----|-----|-----|-----| norm| tf | sl | it | sc | bold| bf | bs | bi | | I'm not enthusiastic about the slanted shape in general, so I would draw another model, basically as a 2x2x2 cube, but rendered here in 2 slices: (lowercase) (smallcaps) | shape | | shape | weight|norm |ital | weight|norm |ital | ------|-----|-----| ------|-----|-----| norm| tf | it | norm| sc | ic | bold| bf | bi | bold| bc | bt | (who knows what the short name of the last cell should be?) I see this as being typographically more attractive than the dependence on \kap{} and similar commands (since the stroke weight stays much more consistent when you use the pre-defined, non-faked glyphs). So. How would I manage this? I guess I'm wondering if I'm going to get into trouble if I experiment with redefining \slfam, \ttfam, and \bsfam for my own nefarious purposes? odd behavior (i think) on part in table of contents

hi Again, Thanks in advance for the help here. I have the following: \setuphead[part] [incrementnumber=yes] \setuplist [part] [alternative=f, aligntitle=no, width=0em, margin=0em, before=\blank, after=\blank, style=bold] \definecombinedlist [contentList] [part,chapter,section,subsection,subsubsection] [level=subsection, criterium=local] \setupcombinedlist [contentList] [partnumber=no] When i place this list (the table of contents), i get the Part to show up in the ToC, but it's weird looking. First, it is resetting the Chapter numbering at each new Part. If i set incrementnumber=no, then the Part doesn't show up at all in the ToC. Also, when the Part shows up in the ToC [when i set incrementnumber=no], each subsequent Part is indented the margin of the previous one (plus resetting the chapter numbering). Any thoughts? I can't get both a blank page inserted whenever a chapter finishes on an odd page and also suppress my header on the first page of a chapter. Euler math again (virtually)

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone else was interested in the Euler math font. I was a bit frustrated in its incomplete coverage of certain symbols (e.g. delimiters, radicals), but then I discovered the Virtual Euler Math fonts/eulervm for LaTeX. It yields a set of virtual fonts (zeu*.vf) that make the glyph set look a lot like the default computer-modern math fonts. <http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/ eulervm.html?action=/tex-archive/fonts/> I've come up with a math collection (math-zeu) and a combined typescript file (type-zeu) that seem to give good enough results. Does anyone do enough math typesetting to want to test "zeuler" out? I've gotten good enough results this evening, but I don't have a lot of sophisticated formulae lying around to do a full test. Does anyone have some semi- demanding (non-AMS-territory) math for me to try? Strange \placeformula

Good morning! I' have probably made a strange bug in my document layout. In adfadfasdfasdf \placeformula[eq:one] $$a=b,$$\noindentation adfasdfadsf the \placeformula macro doesn't produce a formula number -- the formula has no number and \in{equation}[eq:one] doesn't work as well. Sometimes there is also no space before the formula and after it. Extremely strange is that asdfasdfasdf \placeformula[eq:one] \startformula a=b \stopformula\noindentation adsfasdfasdf works well. The bug is definitely in my macros for document layout since another document works well. Can some of you hint where to find the bug? I'm nearly desperate. Arranging problem / texexec--arrange

Hi Hans, While trying the possibilities to arrange pages I detected, that using the predefined European standardsizes of the pagesize and the sheets arranging works well. However if I try to use a custom size paper on a standard sized sheet, then I see, that the different pages do not seem to be positioned correctly. When using the option --arrange with texexec, Context halts after loading the basics. You can show this problem with the testfile I attach to this mail. Would you be so kind to have a look at this. I need to prepare a booklet, where I have to use a custom size pagesize. For the demonstration of the problems I attach a test file. Kind regards Willi

I'm trying to put a right brace to the right of a framed box and thought I could do this: \starttext $\left. \framed[width=7cm,align=right,height=fit]{ something here \hairline \vphantom{something here} \hairline \vphantom{something here} } \right\} \text{entries for something}$ \stoptext but the brace is almost exactly twice as tall as the framed box. Texfont on i-Installer for Mac OSX

Guys, Gerben Wierda has done an excellent job producing i-Installer for the Mac OSX which works with LaTeX etc very well. It is clear that many people are being introduced to TeX on the Mac now using this installer. Unfortunately there appears to be one problem with ConTeXt which is texfont. The tetex structure that Gerben has chosen is for the main fonts to be in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts Texfont will not recognise this location and the fonts in it and I suspect it is because of the full stop in texmf.tetex Evidence for this is in the following Running the single command texfont --en=8r --ve=urw --co=courier --so=auto Should work but returns processing aborted : unknown tex root /sw/share/texmf/ Clearly texroot is set incorrectly so forcing that texfont --en=8r --ve=urw --co=courier --so=auto --fontroot=/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/ Should work but returns processing aborted : unknown subpath ../fonts/afm/urw/courier And yet /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/afm/urw/courier/ucrb8a.afm Exists Are there any other possible reasons for this problem I have had some success now with fonts using adobekb.tex but the situation is not wholly satisfactory and I think I would really like texfont to work. -- Nigel

color band

Dear syndicate, For a book cover I want a green-colored rectangular band, centered, at the very top of the page, with text in some other color (to be determined) overlapping the band. The band is small, just, say, 2cm high and 12 cm wide. Since it's at the top it is surrounded by white on only three sides. I'm not even sure where to get started here (I don't think the LaTeX Graphics Companion will be much help:->) Here is part of my present layout. I'll have to put this band in the topspace and increase it, I presume: \definepapersize[journal][width=5.5in, height=8.5in] \setuppapersize[journal][letter] \setuplayout[width=middle, | height=19cm, | footer=0cm, | header=0cm, | topspace=28pt, | location={middle,doublesided}, | marking=on] I hope the solution is Plain-compatible since I may have to use Gamma for some Arabic insertions. A change in textext Metafun maco?

Good noon. I have updated to the new ConTeXt and some of my documents failed to work. I use the FunnyFrame example from the Metafun manual. With the old ConTeXt all worked well. Now I can see in the title of a frame just "unknown". I played a little with the mpgraph.mp and I suspect the macro textext not to work well. Or in the same way as before. Where can be a bug? (Well, I updated only TeX, Metapost, and Perl part of ConTeXt and generated formats -- I didn't updated the ConTeXt stuff for plain or for LaTeX). Can you help me? Many thanks. Michal Kvasnicka

suppressing header on first page of chapter

greetings, i have setup a head for my chapters, and i would like to suppress the Chapter and Section text from being printed on the first page of each chapter. I have setup the header text like so. \setupheadertexts [text] [chapter] [section] is there a command to add to the \setuphead to make the chapter and section titles not print on the first page of the chapter (head)? thanks, mark

Hi, I'm using ConTeXt on my iMac (teTeX distribution through I-installer program) Everything seems OK except for inputing accentuated characters ... If I type \'a I got the correct character (accentuated a) but if I type directly the accentuated character from the keyboard, I got no result .... I start my document with \useregime[mac] (or \enableregime[mac]) but it does not change anything .... Any idea ? (sorry if it's a Faq but I didn't find any solution in reading the mailing list archive ....) thanks in advance jp

local environments

Hi: I have a project with a few different types of documents, so I want to set up a few local environments in the same global environment file. Is the following a legitimate environment file? \startenvironment Layout ... some global settings ... \startlocalenvironment[Alternative] ... some local settings ... \stoplocalenvironment \stopenvironment If it is legitimate, how do I specify that a document use the global settings with specific settings from the local environment. I tried \environment Layout \localenvironment Alternative but any macros defined in the local environment are reported as undefined. Thanks, Matt

Problem with letter landscape

Hello, I have been trying to typeset on landscape oriented 8.5x11 size paper. However, pdftex keeps giving me the wrong size paper (11 x 11.69, according to Acrobat). If I run regular TeX, then dvips, then ps2pdf, I get the right size. I apologize if this is strictly a problem with pdftex, but I believe that somewhere it is perhaps a problem with Context. Using MetaPost graphics in ConTeXt

Hello, I'm trying to use some MetaPost-generated graphics with ConTeXt, but I seem to be unable to do so. I have a file test.1 in the same directory as the ConTeXt source, which is as minimal as: \starttext \input tufte \placefigure[left] {Esempio di settore circolare} {\externalfigure[test.1]} \input knuth \stoptext but it seems like it can't find the file test (no extension); I tried adding options [type=mps] or [method=mps] or both, but each fails with a different error: either it looks for test.mps or it looks for test.unknown ... Q:Font ... not found

Running `texexec --pdf Skript.tex` I get a couple of warnings like the one below Warning: pdfetex (file eccc1000): Font eccc1000 at 720 not found and the file uses some replacement fonts that look unbearably ugly. How can I fix this? Thanks for your help. Marko

Backgrounds

Hello, I would like to discuss a few points about backgrounds (\startbackground ... \stopbackground). First of all, it would be nice to have "background classes", so that I can have different backgrounds for different things without having to reset it each time. (Think \definebackground[this][options=values], \setupthis, \startthis ... \stopthis, as usual.) The second point is about the splitting capabilities in backgrounds. This is incredibly nice to have, but needs a little finetuning, IMO: it should be possible to specify whether the various options that concern the "border" of the background (i.e. background corner, frame, frame corner, etc) should act at split time or not; example: assume that I set my background to have a frame (frame=on) If the background gets split across pages, I get two "boxed" text: the first in the first page, the second in the second page. Instead, to show that the block continues on the next page, it should be possible to turn this off. I suggest options like: splitframe, splitframecorner, splitbackgoundcorner analogous to topframe/bottomframe and the like, which defines the behaviour of frames and angles in the "split area". Moreover (now I'm getting picky, but while we're at it ...) it would be nice, even for generic framed text, to be able to specify the behaviour of each single corner separately (say, top left and top right rounded, bottom left and right rectangular). -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Hello, I would like to know if it is possible in MetaPost (in particular MetaFun) to get all the possible intersection points of the paths, with some kind of simple command, with a syntax like, say: A[] := path1 intersections path2 (where the resulting list could be either a list of points or a list of time pairs, like for intersectiontimes). Another possible syntax could be path3 := path1 intersections path2 which would give a path for which times 0, 1, 2, 3, ... give the first, second, third, fourth, ... intersection point. Alignment of graphs/metafun

Hello Context, I (intend to) use metapost/metafun and m-graph to make my graphs. The graph module of metapost puts the origin at the left-bottom of the graph area, and the tick-marks and axis-labels are at negative positions (i.e. to the left or to the bottom of the zero line). This is nice, and I'd like to use this. I'd like to achieve the following effect: The graph-area is left-aligned with the text (has the width of the text-column), while the tick-marks and vertical axis label stick into the (left) margin. Furthermore (but possibly even harder) I'd like the tick-marks (at least the unrotated ones...) to be aligned with the grid I'm using. I can change the height of the graphs to match the grid nicely, but do you have any clues where to start? The problem I have is that the amount to overlap into the left margin is highly variable. The vertical alignment is possibly even trickier. Kind regards, Maarten Sneep

some bugs and C++ typing

Hi Hans! I'm typesetting an algorithms course in C++ and I came around to few bugs and personal wishes :) 1. I've "written" a verb-cpp.tex which knows C++ keywords. However, as you'll see from the attached example, it needs a few fixes: - the missing word if it ends with & (the bar& x argument) - & coloured in green alongside y (it should be grey since it's an operator) - &, +=, -=, *=, /=, %=, >>=, <<=, ->*, .* should be coloured like operators and must be considered as single tokens - I'd like the whole comment in a single color (not red start/end and black text). dark green would be ideal :) Since I know nothing about verbatim mechanism (I just took java environment and stuffed it with C++ keywords) how hard would it be to make those changes? I put '\input verb-cpp' into verb-ini.tex to make it work in my local installation. 2. As you can see from the example, I want to typeset text next to code. However, the footnotes within are not working. (context ver. 2002.10.23) 3. Multi-column paragraphs are not automatically broken across pages. If the paragraph doesn't fit on the current page, it will be moved to the next page leaving an ugly empty box at the bottom of the previous page. How can I achieve an effect similar to the attached example, but that will automatically break across pages not leaving empty boxes at the bottom? 4. Some time ago I reported \pseudoencodedDJ macros not working in itemize environment and you posted a fix to the list. Did you integrate the fix in the latest release? Thanks for your time!

references and mis-ordering

hi folks. I'm still in the process of debugging this (so details and a minimal example aren't ready yet), but I'm wondering if anyone knows of circumstances that would cause table and figure numbers to be out-of- order and swapped. For example, the numbers from my \placelistoftables run in this order: 8.1 8.2 8.3 8.4 8.5 8.6 8.7 8.5 8.9 8.10 8.11 8.12 8.10 *** **** While \placelistoffigures gives 8.1 8.2 8.3 8.5 8.8 8.6 8.7 8.8 8.9 8.13 *** **** This is disturbing and hard to debug. The person whose thesis this is didn't make it easy, with very long and minimally different identifiers. I've tried purging the directory, including making sure the .tuo file is completely rebuilt. I've tried changing reference names, and it *has* had an effect on the order, but it hasn't fixed it yet. db2context package - beta release

Db2context package transforms your SGML/XML DocBook documents to DVI, PostScript or PDF by translating them in ConTeXt as a first process using XSLT processor. Unlike DocBookInConteXt package which transform DocBook source document on-the-fly, db2context packages uses XSLT as a transformation language to convert DocBook source document into ConTeXt document which can be further customized using all the available ConTeXt commands. Displayed material, again

Hello list, I wish to bring the discussion again on displayed material. Display material is material that conceptually belongs to a paragraphs but typographically breaks it. After the display, the paragraph can continue or not. In ConTeXt, there are many things which should be considered displayed material: formulas, enumerations and other itemgroups, quotations, etc. Every start/stop pair that begins a new paragraph should actually be a displayed area. In ConTeXt, one can achieve such result by using [intentnext=yes] or [indentnext=no] on a case-by-case basis, depending on whether the start/stop pair is supposed to start a new paragraph or not. Of course, this "manual" way to do the thing goes against the general principle that the computer is supposed to do as much of the job as possible, by itself. Hi all, is it possible to give a different layout (different margins) for a small part of a page or pages (like a negative narrower)? I should set texts in narrow columns and pictures in wide columns on the same page. Greetings, Bence Nagy

Hi, all Excuse me if this is well known, but I couldn't find on the manual. I have several questions: 1. How to add an entry to the PDF bookmark? I tried placebookmarks[title,chapter,section] but it doesn't work. 2. How to add an entry in the list of contents if I use subject instead of section, and how to add this in the bookmark. I tried define a new list and changed the content compinedlist but nothing happened . 2. How to add a pair of '[' ']' around the number of footnotes? Thanks, Guo

Is this supposed to work?? I'm using ver: 2003.1.31 and try to do the following, right out of the handbook: \setupheads[alternative=inmargin] \subject{Some Text} and expected the subject to start in the margin. It does not, and I found out that this seems to work only for numbered heads like section et al. How do I put a subject in the margin, possibly while using a command to make it white on black (I can do that, only it's not in the margin....) alternative setting of comments

I was wondering if anyone who works with the verbatim environments has tried to set comments in a different style. It would be ideal to be able to set comments in \tf text font or some variant. I'm not really interested in colors at the moment. The immediate need is for working with a Pascal-like language, but I've been a bit baffled as to how to grab and process XML comments also (though I haven't look at that recently). Latex Fonts as per adobekb.tex

I have been forced to redo my font allocations because of Gerbens i-installer for MacOSX no longer seems to allow texfont to work. fontroot is not set correctly and then when I put in the correct setting the font subpaths are not found even though they are clearly there. Patrick has lead me to the delights of Latex Fonts via his script adobekb.tex which works well for most of my existing documents. Partially moving from LaTeX to ConTeXt

At last, I 'almost' made up my mind about using ConTeXt to write generic document (for me and my daughters' school), report and manuals at work. The only snag at this very moment is that - being my Company M$-Windows addicted, specifically as far as Word is concerned - I don't know if there is any free software to translate a document from ConTeXt to word, even partially (something like the katex2rtf package for latex).
