LuaMetaTEX as LaTeX to XHTML/ePub transpiler?

I have documents in LaTeX, and would like to generate XHTML (ePub) output without going through an intermediate DVI or PDF step. Markup to markup, translating or transpiling rather than typesetting. My use case is that I have two tabletop gaming books, 60 - 80 pages of text and diagrams, written for pdfLaTeX and now with XeLaTeX. I'm very happy with LaTeX and the wonderful PDF output for print. But now I also want to create ePub/XHTML as well as print versions. So far I've tried tex4ebook and tex4ht and neither works for me. Firstly, some of the LaTeX commands are not recognised or causing errors. And secondly, when I managed to get a small test section to work, the generated XHTML/HTML is very large, full of tiny <span>s. The problem seems to be that tex4ht runs TeX which typesets everything into DVI with every element carefully placed on a page, and then tex4ht tries to reverse that back into HTML. All this extra HTML will slow down / interfere with the ebook reader which is doing the final page layout at runtime on a particular device. How I would like it to work is directly from LaTeX to HTML without any low level typesetting. If I have a LaTex source paragraph This is some text with \textbf{some parts} in bold. The <whatever>TEX will copy the source text to the destination. If there's a TeX command, here \textbf, it looks for a Lua function with that name and invokes it with whatever argument text is present. The Lua function emits <b>, then recursively processes the argument text, then emits </b>. Similarly there would be an implied lookup of \beginParagraph and \endParagraph which would emit <p> and </p>. Plain text just gets copied through unchanged. So (finally) my question: is LuaMetaTEX what I'm looking for? Yes is the answer I'm hoping for. And any guidance would be much appreciated. No, but best starting point? I've never tried modifying TeX code itself, but I am an experienced and sometimes competent programmer. who has written a compiler parser and a high level code generator. Why do we install context in $HOME/bin?

Dear all, the installation documentation on the wiki says: mkdir $HOME/bin/context cd $HOME/bin/context wget http://lmtx.pragma-ade.nl/install-lmtx/context-linux-64.zip unzip context-linux-64.zip sh install.sh AFAIR we had $HOME/context before. Is this intended? Is it because $HOME/bin is often in $PATH by default? (neo)vim support & Lua

Hello, some months ago there was a 0.5 release (https://neovim.io/news/2021/07) of Neovim which brings support for Lua language to a new level - "Lua as a first-class scripting and configuration language". Moreover, Neovim now it also has built-in LSP client...so, I wonder if there is some work planned to improve Vim support for ConTeXt by taking advantage of those new development related to Neovim? io.loaddata() or buffer.assigns()

Hi everybody Are there any type of files that is required by io.loaddata or/and buffers.assign ? The following code works pretty well if there is no compilation problem by g++. modules not found

Here is something I do not understand about \usemodule. My modules are in two places because I wanted development and production separated: (1) Volume/TeX/texmf/modules/ (2) Volume/TeX/texmf/modules-new/ Unexpected and suddenly loading files from the first directory does not occur any longer: modules > 'hvdm-tak' is not found But modules from modules-new load without a hitch: modules > 'hvdm-load' is loaded I have discard the caches and rebuilt them to no avail. Then trying mtxrun --locate filename does not show any location not even from the files that are loaded, just an empty line. What happens inside \usemodule to cause this? I confess being baffled. And how to convince ConTeXt to find all my modules? dr. Hans van der Meer

zint barcode module on LMTX/MacOS

Hi again, the LMTX zint module uses libzint, while MkIV calls the zint binary. The latter works for me, the first not. On MacOS, the library is "/opt/local/lib/libzint.dylib"*. I changed that in the source and the file appears to be found. Could you add that, Hans? *) Previously, zint for MacOS was only available via HomeBrew; I don’t know where that would install libzint, probably in /usr/local/lib/ like on Linux. Yesterday a MacPorts port was added that I used; MacPorts install everything under /opt/. But then still zintlib.execute returns nothing. I wonder if this works on Windows? no looseness in LMTX?

In my magazine and book projects, I sometimes fix pagebreaking by stretching paragraphs with \looseness=1 Unfortunately this works _in my project_ only with MkIV, i.e. \looseness has no effect with LMTX. I tried different examples (e.g. the attached file) and can’t reproduce the problem, there MkIV and LMTX always behave the same. So it must be something in my settings. What could cause the difference? I tried English and German and different settings of alignment and tolerance. Might it be font dependent? Hraban

Dear List, Does anyone know how to set the margin of an inner item group? Dear List, Here's a collection of four problems about item groups that I've just encountered. 1. 'n' and 'packed' not playing well with other options. This works: \defineitemgroup[myitems][itemize][margin=2em,before=before] \setupmyitems[n,packed] \starttext text \startmyitems \item 1 \item 2 \stopmyitems \stoptext This does not: \defineitemgroup[myitems][itemize][margin=2em,before=before,n,packed] This does not either: \defineitemgroup[myitems][itemize] \setupmyitems[n,packed,margin=2em,before=before] Is there a rule for this glitch which makes it worth memorizing, or is this just a bug? 2. 'before' not working in nested item groups. \starttext \startitemize[before=before1] \item 1 \startitemize[before=before2] \item 2 \stopitemize \stopitemize \stoptext Both before1 and before2 should appear, but only before1 is shown. 3. How to wrap the line under the bulletin or number? To be more precise, the current wrapping behavior of, say, "\item 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9" is: * 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 How can we remove the indentation of the second line and make it like * 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 4. How to put the items on the same line? That is, for "\item 0 \item 1 \item 2", I would like it to be like * 0 * 1 * 2 instead of * 0 * 1 * 2 My context version: 2021.03.05 19:11, texlive. Dear List, I'm trying to typeset an item group (itemize) with chinese numbering. It is suggested in multiple older documentations and answers that \startitemize[c] should be used, for which \usemodule[chinese] is required. But I can no longer find the 'chinese' module neither in texlive, in lmtx, nor on the website. Has this module been removed or replaced by something else? Thanks! Best, Sylvain

cld, postponing and images

I think I tangled myself... - I’ve a macro defined in Lua that uses fullpagemakeup and \setlayer to place an image on an empty page. - This macro is called from within a postponing environment. - I check figures.current().status.fullname if the image is found ... - and then read xsize and ysize from figures.current().status.private - I there is no image placed before the postponed ones, figures.current() is nil – If I place one, figures.current() is always the last “normal” one, never that from my macro call. – If I call context.getfiguredimensions({imagename}) within the macro where I calculate the size, and again before context.externalfigure(), then the images are found and have the right size according to figures.currents(), but... - if I didn’t place the same image before anywhere, the previous image is used, and if there was none, the place just stays empty (no dummy box). I don’t know how to resolve this, spent already the whole day to understand the problem this far. At the moment my workaround is to place all used images somewhere outside of the visible page. This doesn’t work: if ((tex.getcount("realpageno") mod 2) == 1) then a = 1 end I found tex.ifodd but don’t know how to use it either. * How to access my \def’d macros? Is this supposed to work?: TeX: \def\Something{1cm} Lua: context.Something() (It doesn’t in my case, but if it should, I can investigate.) * TeX primitives Is tex.strut and tex.par supposed to work? Or how should I access these? * interface definitions: Lua: interfaces.implement { name = "MyFun", public = true, --permanent = false, -- what does this mean? arguments = { "string", "string", "string", "string" }, actions = function(reference, y, text, filename) -- a lot end, } TeX: \MyFun{ref:some}{1cm}{bla}{hacker} 0) I don’t understand what “permanent” does and why I should maybe disable it. Or is a measure like that not a dimension? 2) The original interface of \MyFun had two optional parameters. Use MetaPost to distort images?

Hi, is it possible to apply geometric transformations to images using MetaPost? This is again way over my head, but I’m still trying different methods to let a ConTeXt document look more “hand-made”. In my example*, I added frame and shadow to a photo and _distorted_ it slightly to have it look like a postcard was glued on the page (with a piece of tape). I’d like to automate and randomize that process. I guess I could achieve something similar with ImageMagick (not with GraphicsMagick), but if it would be possible inside LMTX that would be great. one quick remark about textext.dflt (vs textext.dlft)

Hi all, one remark, I was expecting to be allowed to use textext.dlft but finally the appropriate command appears to be textext.dflt which require to switch F and L letters. Is it on purpose ? would it make sense to have a dlft version to match LeFT ?

getting line numbers

Hi everybody Is there a way to have an automatic access to the current line number of a specific place inside a tex file ? To be more precise, here is what I would like to do. I am currently trying to have some automatic external compilation by g++ of some portion of my tex file as in the following example below. \startC \stopC defines a framed part of text written between lines 538 and 549. Of course, if I add something before or inbetween my framed code, 538 and/or 549 will change. Thus I would like to get these two numbers automatically. Thank you. There is something I do not understand in the passing of parameters from TeX to LuaTex. This is my TeX definition: \def\ListSort[#1]#2{\directlua{hvdm.listsort([===[#2]===],[===[#1]===])}} Calling \ListSort[sep={ + }]{} delivers the string 'sep={ + }' into LuaTeX as the printout in the logfile shows and as intended. However in \ListSort[{ + }]{} the braces have disappeared and transferred is nothing more than ' + '. Why is the transfer messing up the character string I am passing by removing the outer braces? Is this a bug or is it an unavoidable consequence of the TeX-LuaTeX interface? dr. Hans van der Meer

Though I can get over this with \m{\pMat{1,7,-6,¦,-4;3,-4,7,¦,13;4,3,1,¦,9}} , I find the result from the old way looks nicer. Is the using of \backslash vrule within mathmatrix gone for good? \stoptext

In mkiv we;ve always used a more powerful alternative for the marks that than what luatex and friends provide but in luametatex I added a few of the missing pieces to the engine in addition to what already what there for a while. But I need Wolfgang to go over the code in order to identify possible side effects first. Hans ps. Hi again, was something changed WRT JPEG images? Since a few versions some images that used to work are denied with the error message "... is bugged". Maybe there *is* something wrong with them, but I don’t see a problem. Incorrect rendering in Devanagari forms in some fonts

Dear All, I have encountered a strange problem using certain Devanagari fonts for the Sanskrit languagein ConTeXt, wherein the rakaar ligatures are not rendered properly in some glyphs/conjuncts. The problem is not too easy to describe so please pardon this long email. When I switch to using the 'devanagari-one' feature set (in the foregoing typescript definitions), which sets the script tag to 'deva', the rakaar forms in the left column are rendered incorrectly in the file 'devanagari-one-forms-shobhika.png' attached in the Drive folder here. Analogous problems occur with the Murty font. Further, in the Murty font, one other conjunct, namely त् +‌ त does not render properly. I have highlighted this in the file 'murty-conjuct.png'. The sample images demonstrating the issues are available in the following public Google Drive folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aOmPKqBzB5usVvT9g-Bxk87exyiQn7ax I must mention once again that I have no such problems using either of these fonts in XeLaTeX. What I am noticing is that this problem only occurs with consonant forms that have a 'circular base', i.e., have no danda (the vertical line) next to the character. For what it is worth, I have noticed also that I am able to 'circumvent' this issue if I write छ्र‌ +‌ ZWS + Devanagari vowel sign where ZWS is the zero-width space U+200B. Unfortunately, this quickly becomes very untenable in large documents. Since I was new to ConTeXt I did not venture to ask earlier on since I had not read much of the documentaion. Now, after having read quite a bit, I have mustered up the courage to ask here. As a stop-gap solution, I defined another font alternative with \definefontalternative[rk] and used that with a font synonym using 'devanagari-two' where necessary. I have completely migrated (away from (Xe)LaTeX )to ConTeXt for all my university work which is in English with lots of mathematics. I am by no means an expert but I have learned very much about ConTeXt by reading the excellent wiki, documentation and mailing list. I have no issues using ConTeXt on an everyday basis for my English-language based work. It is only when I tried to use it for my work in Indian-languages that I ran into this issue. Commercial vector graphics apps have “vector brushes”, e.g. Adobe Fresco: https://helpx.adobe.com/fresco/using/vector-brushes.html The page nicely shows the necessary variables. In Inkscape you can combine “brush images” like https://publicdomainvectors.org/en/free-clipart/Paintbrushes-for-Inkscape/8… with pen shapes: https://logosbynick.com/custom-brushes-in-inkscape/ This stretches the whole shape over the path – not perfect but good enough (and the same what e.g. “my” Affinity Designer does). Hi, list! I want to know if there's a handy way to pass predefined colors, either RGB or CMYK, e.g. those in svg or crayola, to Metafun's bitmapimage. Say, something like: \startMPpage % svg's gold definition draw bitmapimage(2, 2, "ffd700 ffd700 ffd700 000000") scaled 3cm; \stopMPpage using "gold" instead of its definition so that I can set bitmap image colors by name rather than numbers. problem with MkIV/TeXlive/TEXMFCACHE

Dear experts, I want to use ConTeXt MkIV as supplied by TeXlive 2021. After installation, I ran "mtxrun --generate". I also tried "context --generate". Both create output in the wrong place. The TeXlive documentation says that ConTeXt uses TEXMFCACHE, which uses the default $TEXMFSYSVAR;$TEXMFVAR in my texmf.cnf. My TEXMFSYSVAR is /var/opt/texlive, but ConTeXt doesn't use it. Instead, it creates /opt/texmf-var and creates its output there. I don't understand why it used that path; I've never used or configured it. How can I convice ConTeXt to use TEXMFSYSVAR? Or is this a question for the TeXlive folks? Thanks for looking at this. Regards, Rainer

How odd; Then it must be related to my viewer here ... I was just surprised to literally see two different outcomes with the \startTEXpage and without. Maybe it has to do with some sort of "nesting" in the PDF that is not handled correctly at the PDF viewer's end. I'll test again on a different machine (and with the printing company) when I'm back to work. Best way to apply a fill-pattern to a closed shape?

Hello List, I have a use case to apply a particular pattern to a closed shape. I am using Metapost for the figures. After some research this package seems to quite good, in terms of having all the patterns normally used - https://ctan.org/pkg/minim-hatching But I could not figure out how to use this with ConTeXt. Hello list, I have noticed that some gradients get lost when embedding an external figure from a pdf (Preview and Acrobat DC and in printer), although the original pdf works fine for me. It seems to occur with color-to-color gradients (but not all), but not with color-to-alpha ones. My Minimal: \starttext $==$ this $f(x)= x^2$ \switchtobodyfont[times] $==$ this $f(x)= x^2$ \switchtobodyfont[modern] $==$ this $f(x)= x^2$ \stoptext This is producing an =, a large space (about two characters wide), then an = through the start of the word "this". See pdf here: https://pdfhost.io/v/a0WMsyE9E_untitled2.pdf Also notice the odd spacing in between the f and ( in $f(x)$ for times (but not modern). It all works perfectly fine on https://live.contextgarden.net/. Handling of negative values in the statistical-charts?

Dear List, I have been exploring the use of the awesome statistical-charts <https://akela.mendelu.cz/~thala/statcharts/> module. So first of all, a big thanks to the authors of the same. I seem to have hit a snag when it comes to handling of -ve values. In my example (attached tex & pdf), the y-axis labels and the grids do not seem to be working on the -ve side (also, able to flip labels above x-axis for -ve values). This seems to be the case of column charts and bar charts (and I will test this for the other types of charts also). If this is a more generic issue across all the types, then I can contribute towards enhancing it (as any charts module should handle -ve values). Any tips or pointers would be really helpful. prefixstarter in captions

Hi, There was a question on the list before on prepending to the numberpart of a caption with the 'numberstarter' command, which works just fine ( https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2017/089142.html) I wanted to try the same but for prepending to the entire prefix (not just the number part) when prefixsegments are used, however using 'prefixstarter' does not seem to make a difference. For the sake of the example I have added the numberstarter in as well, just for comparison. Caption with the example reads "Figure 1.S.1" whereas I was expecting "Figure C.1.S.1". MWE: \setupfloatcaption[figure][number=yes,way=bytext,prefix=yes,prefixstarter={C.},numberstarter={S.}] \starttext \startchapter[title={Cow}] \startplacefigure[title={Custom caption}] \externalfigure[cow] \stopplacefigure \stopchapter \stoptext Not sure whether prefixstarter is the intended command to use, but the wiki of setupcation (https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupcaption) says it inherits from setupcounter which has both numberstarter and prefixstarter defined in the same way. Fabrice, there is difference between putting something on the first page regardless of the number of pages in your document or do something when your document contains only a single or more pages. When you have a header or title which is always placed on the first page (but not on the following pages) you have to options. 1. Check the current page when to header is placed which can be done with \doif{\pagenumber}{1}{...} 2. Disable the header on the first page (\setupheader[state=high]) and place your own title as a regular element in the running text. A case where you have to number the number of total pages is when you try to show the page counter in the form "Page x of y" for 2 or more pages. In this case you have to check against the value for the total number of pages which can be done with \doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{...}. Hi, I'm trying to implement a custom bibliography rendering where in-text citations (specifically, citations with alternative=entry) are not identical to the entries in the bibliography list. Following a pattern I've seen in publ-imp-chicago.mkvi, I've been able to implement most of the features I'm interested in by using conditional formatting with a mode that is specifically set for citations with the "entry" alternative. I'd also like for author names in entry citations to be different author names in list entries, in the following ways: - In entry citations, authorconversion should be normal, while in list entries, authorconversion should be inverted (more specifically, the first name should be inverted, while all subsequent names should be in normal order...but if this is too complicated, then it may be an issue for another e-mail thread, and we can just focus on normal vs. inverted for now). - In entry citations, "et al." should be used for any names after the third name, while in list entries, all names should be printed in full. I thought that the following settings would work: \definebtx [sbl:\s!list] [sbl] [\c!otherstext=, \c!etallimit=, \c!etaldisplay=, \c!etaloption=, \c!authorconversion=inverted] % TODO: need to print the first name inverted, with all subsequent names in normal order \definebtx [sbl:\s!cite] [sbl] [\c!otherstext={\btxspace\btxlabeltext{others}}, % use et al. for truncated author / editor list \c!etallimit=3, % don't use et al. for 3 or fewer authors \c!etaldisplay=3, % \c!authorconversion=\v!normal] % by default, use normal name order for in-text citations But only the "list" settings seem to be used. The layout on the first page is different from the following pages but this is just how \definelayout work when you use a number as first argument. What you have to understand is that a setups-environment is just a macro definition where you provide the names as argument to the start command. This means \startsetups [header] ... \stopsetups works the same way as \def\internalname_header {...} but you have to use \setups [header] rather than \internalname_header to get the content of the environment. Indexing redux

List, I am trying to create an index with both "see" and "see also" cross-reference entries.[1] At this point, ConTeXt provides basic support for "see" entries via the \seeREGISTER command (it does not properly support references to sub-entries) and it provides no support at all for "see also" entries. Can somebody suggest a way to generate these entries? Perhaps a way of inserting entries into the index before it is formatted, in the manner of \writetolist or \writebetweenlist? (MkII has \writetoregister, but that did not carry forward and I do not know if it would have helped here.) I had brought this up to no response a couple of years ago.[2] I am hopeful that LMTX may offer a chance to get support for improved indexing, and in particular for "see" and "see also" entries. Test for displaying a header

Hi, I have been using the ansi and ansilog flags in the past and they work fine with lmtx, but do not seem to make a difference with luatex/mkiv. numbered exercises

Hi, I’m typesetting a textbook that contains numbered and indented exercises. They must not float. Which structure should I use for them? There must be an easy answer, but I draw a blank. At the moment I’m using heads, derived from 'section', but the exercises should have independent numbers, and I’m unsure how I should setup the indentation. At least the document compiles fine (I get a PDF), although multiple complaints from the lua end when I use "$" or "#" in my source, for example #!/usr/bin/bash etc. culminating in Sorry, but I'm not programmed to handle this case; I'll just pretend that you didn''t ask for it. If you're in the wrong mode, you might be able to return to the right one by typing 'I}' or 'I$' or 'I\par'. I re-processed a previous issue of a journal and found that it no longer compiled. It worked fine in versions up to and including 2021.07.23 but fails by version 2021.08.19 19:48. It may have failed a little earlier than this - I don't always refresh every release. Hi everybody. I wonder how does math.random() work in context. I found that this subject was discussed more than ten years ago by Otared and Taco and Thomas. It is clear to me how to obtain new results upon typesetting the same file by changing the value of math.randomseed (with os.time()). If you don't change the seed, you get the same result upon each typesetting, and a seed is given in the .tuc file. For example I have this: ["randomseed"]=0x1.0741c18b8a4ep-6 How do I use (and is it possible to) this value to have the same result of math.random() upon typesetting another file (with a different name) ? I could provide a same fixed seed in both files, but for some reasons I would like to re-use some previous results of math.random() for which no seed was initially given in another .tex file. Bug with mathalignment and columns

Hi, When a mathalignment is started at the end of a multi-column page ConTeXt places it at the start of the previous second column instead of placing it on a new page. It seems that it always places the formula at the top of the second column, regardless of how many columns there are. It also does this even if there are still empty columns (try changing 98 to 100 in the for loop). Jack

In the LMTX installation, the file requiring the fix is: context-osx-64/tex/texmf-modules/generic/pgfplots/pgfplots.code.tex The fix is: Line 7928: change “\begin{axis}" to “\axis” Line 7934: change “\end{axis}" to “\endaxis” Is there anything I can do to aid in getting this fixed in the distribution? Losing a character during line break at a hyphen

In the following MWE, the line breaks at the hyphen following "Diffe", but one of the f's is lost so the PDF shows "Dife-". Hi folks, I made a TeX extension for Panic's Nova editor (https://nova.app) with explicit ConTeXt support, available here: https://extensions.panic.com/extensions/org.flyx/org.flyx.tex/ It features syntax highlighting, suggestions for builtin commands, code folding, auto-completion of stop commands, and structural overview of headings in the symbols sidebar. It also enables the editor's spell checking for non-command text. Different footers for frontmatter and bodymatter

I'd like to have two different footer setups: one for the frontmatter (titlepage and table of contents) where the page number in roman numerals is reported as a single centered footer. Another for the bodymatter where the chapter is on the left footer and the pagenumber is on the right. I can switch between roman numerals and numbers with ``` \defineconversionset [frontpart:pagenumber] [] [romannumerals] \defineconversionset [bodypart:pagenumber] [] [numbers] ``` but I can't figure out how to have two different footer setups. Unicode normalization and Hebrew in ConTeXt

I am typesetting a document in Hebrew that includes pointing (e.g., vowels, shin and sin dots, dagesh, etc.) using ConTeXt. The Hebrew text that I want to typeset has been normalized into Unicode's NFC canonical form. It is well-known that the Unicode canonical ordering of Hebrew points conflicts with the recommended mark ordering of specific points based on their functions (see https://www.sbl-site.org/Fonts/SBLHebrewUserManual1.5x.pdf for more on this topic). Thankfully, many typesetting engines automatically reorder the points to ensure that they are combined according to the specifications of many fonts. I'm pretty sure that XeLaTeX is one of these, as it typesets Hebrew letters with multiple points correctly even when the Hebrew text is in NFC form. My question is, can ConTeXt with LuaTeX handle the same situation correctly? In the following minimal example, ConTeXt typesets pointed Hebrew correctly when the characters are in the typographically recommended order, but not when they are in Unicode canonical order: ``` %Setup Hebrew text font: \definefontfeature[f:pointedhebrew][default][ ccmp=yes, mark=yes, script=hebr ] \definefontfamily[hebrew] [rm] [SBL Hebrew] [features=f:pointedhebrew] %Set the body font: \setupbodyfont[hebrew] %Set up right-to-left alignment: \setupalign[r2l] \starttext %Characters after normalization, in Unicode canonical order (bet + segol + dagesh + final nun): בֶּן %A word with characters in typographically recommended order (bet + dagesh + segol + final nun): בֶּן \stoptext ``` I typeset this using ConTeXt version 2020.03.10, as released with TeXLive 2020. I got the SBL Hebrew font from https://www.sbl-site.org/educational/BiblicalFonts_SBLHebrew.aspx. According to the font's user manual (see the link above the MWE), the font should be able to combine the marks to form the correct glyph regardless of their order after the consonant, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I also tried using the predefined "hebrew" featureset, but that did not change anything. Is there some other OpenType feature or featureset I need to enable to fix this, or is there some module or option I can include to get ConTeXt to typeset Unicode-normalized Hebrew as if it were ordered in the recommended way, like XeLaTeX does? I see that the uninormalize module is mentioned in the thread "XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX, fontspec, unicode and normalization" on TeX Stack Exchange ( https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/229044/xelatex-lualatex-fontspec-un…) can that be used with ConTeXt? Using Lua to format lecture titles

I'm trying to create a new lecture environment starting from the base section. I'd like its title to be `Lecture <number>: <title>` if a title is provided, and `Lecture <number>` if it isn't. This title should also be reported in the left footer and in the table of contents. compression for multimedia objects

Hi Hans, some days ago (after the patch from https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2021/103011.html) I included two mp4 files in a PDF document. They where so generated, that they could be compressed in a zip file from 254MB into less than 25MB. The resulting PDF file was less than 25MB. With the current latest, compression for multimedia objects is disabled. The same PDF document takes about 254MB. I don’t know whether this is intended. In that case, could we have an option to compress embedded multimedia objects? (I know that those mp4 files are crappy, but I can’t control the crap others generate.) Hi, The latest version of ConTeXt writes "result saved in file: ./file.pdf" instead of "saved in file: file.pdf", that breaks the error-checker of AucTeX. Is this wanted? Or are you going to change it back to a filename without the "./"? TIA, -- Peter

Progressively encouraging page/column breaks at \blank with penalties

Hi, I'm trying to implement a section break marker in a grid layout. At a section break, two lines of space should separate the subsequent segments of text (just plain paragraphs, in this case), and a symbol (in the example below, "X") should be set in the middle of these two lines. For my purposes, the section break symbol should never occur at the top of a page or column, and it is more desirable to have a page or column end with the section break symbol than to have a single orphaned line follow the symbol at the end of the page or column. Based on these constraints, I thought that using the "samepage" and "preference" options for the first and second line breaks would work nicely: ``` \define\SectionBreak{% \blank[halfline, samepage]% non-breaking to ensure that no column begins with the section break symbol \startalignment[middle]% {X}% section break symbol \stopalignment% \blank[halfline, preference]% this can (and, if possible, should) be broken across a column ``` This does successfully prevent the placement of the symbol at the top of a page/column, but it doesn't encourage the placement of the symbol at the end of a page/column as often as I would like. I tried replacing the "preference" option with options with better negative penalties, like "penalty:-1000", "penalty:-2000", and even "penalty:-5000", but these didn't make any difference. The option "penalty:-10000" trivially works, but it forces a page/column break at every section break marker, which is far too extreme. Is this normal behavior? I would have thought that progressively more negative penalties would gradually encourage page/column breaks, but this doesn't seem to happen. Both pdfinfo & exiftool have trouble with 1.0.4 but works with 1.0.3

Hi, We use PDF tools like mutool, pdfinfo (from poppler) and exiftool in our workflow (once the PDFs are created by ConTeXt). But looks like we have hit upon some regression issue between 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 versions. Both pdfinfo (from poppler) and exiftool are able to read PDFs created from 1.0.3 but have trouble reading PDFs created with 1.0.4. Please see below logs for details. Our 1.0.4 is from April-2021. 15th International ConTeXt Meeting (registration closes Aug 22)

Hi all, There is still room for some extra participants for the ConTeXt meeting in Bassenge, Belgium from Sept 20 to Sept 25. Despite the still somewhat lingering situation wrt COVID-19, we are now certain that the meeting can and will in fact take place in person. Hurrah! Even if we still have room by then, registration will close on Aug 22, because by that time we need to make final arrangements for T-shirt printing and catering. So if you are still on the fence about attending, do not wait too long! Also remember that it is possible for ConTeXt Group members to attend online-only for free. That is less than ideal because you cannot join us for a drink and a chat, but it gives you bragging rights for attending, and you will get a T-shirt as well !
