Hi Hans, hi Simon! First of all THANKS a lot for both of you for helpful hints and sugestions. After many tests and experiments I decided to use construction: \def\XMLsynonym#1#2{% \letcsnamecsname\csname\@@XMLelement:#1/\endcsname\csname\@@XMLelement:#2/\e ndcsname \letcsnamecsname\csname\@@XMLelement:#1\endcsname\csname\@@XMLelement:#2\end csname \letcsnamecsname\csname\@@XMLelement:/#1\endcsname\csname\@@XMLelement:/#2\e ndcsname} It works ok and suits me best since I (almost) understand HOW it works :) Using constructions which I don't understand makes me a little bit frustrated. Hi, instead of chapters I use \definehead[LevelOneA][chapter] \definehead[LevelOneB][chapter] As I would like the footnotes numbering reset with new chapters I use \setupfootnotes[way=bychapter] But reseting just works for LevelOneA. How can this be? What would be the right way to reset by two different sections? Thank you, Steffen

I want some small empty buttons with exact dimensions. Is there a way to do this with \button or must I use fields (ughh) instead? % interface=en output=pdftex % \setupinteraction[state=start] \setupcolors[state=start] \starttext \setupbuttons[strut=no, offset=overlay, framecolor=green, empty=yes] The minimum width of a button depends on the actual bodyfont size. ConTEXT editor for ConTeXt

Hi all! Sorry, if somebody have already wrote about it -- I haven't traced 'editor thread'. Yesterday I came across small, quite suitable and FREE editor named ConTEXT. This editor has many adventages (like possibility to definining own highlighting templates). The only disadventage I found is lack of regular expresions... TeX capacity exceeded in MikTeX

Hi, I have the same problem as was reported at 8.04.2003 - anybody resolved it ?... I have a document (about 80 pages) and error when I compile whole. Below I attach my log file - anybody have any good idea - I need this paper today ;((( log file: [cut] ! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [hash size=35000]. Do typescripts slow down ConTeXt?

Hi, since I switched from LaTeX to ConTeXt I am wondering why ConTeXt (actually pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-1.10b-2.1 (Web2C 7.4.5) \write18 enabled) gets so extremely slow when I use my own PostScript font. Here is my little statistics (ConTeXT with default/my font - the same in LaTeX): 1) \starttext W619Q \stoptext (5 seconds) 2) \usetypescriptfile[type-agaramond] \usetypescript[AGaramond] \setupencoding[default=ec] \setupbodyfont[AGaramond,10.5pt]% \starttext W619Q \stoptext (12 seconds) 3) \documentclass{book} \begin{document} W619Q \end{document} (less then 1 second) 4) \documentclass[pdftex]{book} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage{textcomp} \usepackage[scaled,osf]{xagaramon} \begin{document} W619Q \end{document} (1 second) So it's 12 seconds compared to 5 seconds (or just 1 with LaTeX). Is this normal? Do I have a good chance that my typescript (see below) could be speeded up, or is this -unfortunately- the regular way ConTeXt deals with PostScript fonts? Problems with bibliography

Hi all, I'm having a few problems with my bibliography. All the citations in the text are correct but when they are place in the bibliography chapter sometimes the author is missing. I'm using \placepublications. Does anyone know of a solution Thanks Adam

Kudos to Patrick for pointing out what was wrong with my file--he helped me immensely, and I'm very grateful to him. The solution is: in addition to \clubpenalty and \widowpenalty, there is also \brokenpenalty, which enforces the good old typographical rule that no page should be broken after a hyphenated word. When I set it to 0, all my pages had exactly the same number of lines. Thanks to Patrick, and may others find it useful! Thomas

I woul like to know where I may find a complete list of symbols like $\Bbb{R}$ to use in context while I am typing maths. The main hurdle that I have today in change my personal typset work from latex to context is a lack of a reference manual in this area. Do you know where I may find one? Hi Willi, I hope that it can't be to difficult: Cause the page before a new chapter is actually completely empty JUST BECAUSE it is generated by (Con)TeX(t) - for chapters should begin on a right page. So I only ask for empty pages (without pagenumbers) that are generated by (Con)TeX(t). That's not possible in ConTeXt? Steffen

Three basic questions on alignment

May I add something to the previous "Alignment" thread? I have 3 cases where the usual command "align=left|right|... doesn't work: 1) \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided,location={header,inmargin}] The page number is aligned left on a right page and vice versa. How can I change this to align left on left pages and right on right pages? (So the page number doesn't rag when flipping from page 1 to 100) 2) \setupheader[style=\MyStyle] \setupheadertexts[section][][][chapter] The chapter title behaves like the pagenumber. How can I change the alignment from inner to outer here? 3) \setupfootnotedefinition[location=inleft] The footnote's numbers here are aligned left, both on the left and the right page. What would be the command to align them right, with a constant distant to the note's text? In all cases I couldn't use align=left|right|..., so I guess there must be the same other syntax suitable for all three? Does anybody has an idea? Grazie, Steffen

Pagebreaks

Dear colisters, is there a way to tel Context to be dumb about pagebreaks? I mean to say "fill every page with the exact same number of lines, no matter what, regardless of clubs, widows, women and children"? Here's my setup: \setuplayout[lines=17,footer=0.7cm] \starttext \clubpenalty=0 \widowpenalty=0 Nevertheless, some pages are 1 or even three lines shorter than the rest (there are no tables, floats, pictures etc.). Nach langem Winword-Leiden habe ich mich nun entschlossen für längere Texte auf ConTeXt umzusteigen. Aus Zeitgründen überlege ich, mir für den Umstieg Unterstützung zu leisten. Bevor ich bei uns an der FH Studenten dafür anspreche, versuche ich es hier über das Forum. Hi, I really need a way to enlarge some certain pages. Because the pagenumbering is not fixed yet I cannot use \adaptlayout[71,82][...] in the preamble. What's the command to place \adaptlayout (or something similar) right at that position in the text where the page needs to be larger? Something like \enlargethispage{15pt}. Hi, There have been some requeste / demands / cries for more control over penalties lately. Since i needed something myself, i've implemented a mechanism for controling this. For the moment only at the outer level, but i'll add more hooks later. Which would not harm if this is documented. But in the MAPS article mentioned recently and in the up-to-date the examples clearly show that \HL should give me a horizontal line. Hi, for reasons of consistency I'd like to define a kind of master-line. So I have everywhere the same proportions even when changing this master value. My idea was \def\MyGrid{15pt} and to use it for example like width=1.5\MyGrid But this doesn't work (error massage mentions problem with units). What is the right syntax for definitions like this? Steffen P.S. I'd like to use it in ConTeXt, but I guess this way of defining is pure TeX, right?

texfont bugs

Hi folks. Looks like the current texfont is a bit broken right now. I believe it's the introduction of the "if ($IsWin32) " block: the pragma "use Win32::API" doesn't seem to work within the conditional block. Furthermore, I'm not sure the else block that follows comes to a sane ending, so I was unsure of the fix. I take it the change was to address embedded spaces on windows systems? I'm all in favour of tying up loose x-platform ends (esp those I may have left in my wake), but I think there's been a step backwards. How to adress footnote's numbers in main text?

Dear colisters, as I typeset my text with oldstyle figures I also have the footnote's numbers in oldstyle. But those figures look quite strange when set superscript in the text. Changing the footnote's numbers in the footnote area (bottom) was possible by: \definefont [MajuskelFNfont][OldStyle at 8.5pt] \setupfootnotes[numbercommand=\MajuskelFNfont,rule=\MyRule] But how can I adress the superscript footnote's numbers in the main text?? Dear syndicate, Sometimes I make a definition like \def\TR{\it} for certain purposes (structural consistency, etc.). How do I modify this to automatically do an italic correction the way \em is set up to do in \ConTeXt? ====================== By the way, did Hans ever make a "final" ConTeXt logo? I still think that \def\Context{{\sc C\kern -.0667emo\kern -.0667emn\kern -.0549emt\kern -.1667em\lower .5ex\hbox {e}\kern -.125emx\kern -.0549emt}} looks better than Con\TeX{}t (and the smaller \TeX better reflects its relative role in the whole package), and I've been using the former up to now. Hi all! I've just finished (?) reinstalling and configuring my TeX system. It is quite small conglomerate of cont-bas, cont-tmf and my own packages. I've successfully generated all formats using fmtutil. However I have some troubles with 'cont-en'; it was successfully generated but do not work properly. I tried to do that also with texexec 'shell'. I need pl language hyphenation patterns as a default and for some cases also en and de. That's why I uncommented following lines in cont-usr.tex file: ... \installlanguage [\s!de] [\c!status=\v!start] \installlanguage [\s!en] [\c!status=\v!start] \installlanguage [\s!pl] [\c!status=\v!start] ... \setupcurrentlanguage[\s!pl] \definefilesynonym [font-cmr] [font-plr] % \useencoding[fde] % commented by me \useencoding[fpl] ... After these changes I generated format with command texexec --make --language=pl,en,de --bodyfont=plr en Log file (cont-fmt): \unprotect \installlanguage[\s!pl][\c!status=\v!start] \installlanguage[\s!en][\c!status=\v!start] \installlanguage[\s!de][\c!status=\v!start] \setupcurrentlanguage[\s!pl] \definetypescriptsynonym[cmr][plr]\definefilesynonym[font-cmr][font-plr] \protect \endinput Is it correct? Hi, Thanks Hans for the patch concerning enumerations. - Certain things now work as I thought they should, others don't . :-( In the meantime I downloaded and installed the latest (yesterdays) CONTeXT. 1. Numbering starts at 2, and the following items get numberd 4,6, 2. I detected, that the option style=command, I used style=\em, does not give the desired result. The first item would be slanted, the second would be regular and the third again slanted. - Hoewer using style=slanted makes all items slanted. Hi, I try to define new command with typing in this way: \def\Command#1% { \framed[options] { \starttyping #1 \stoptyping } } and use it in this way: \Command{\getbuffer[name]} but I have an error: ! Argument of \copyverbatimline has an extra }. If I change to \def\Command#1#2% I have: ! Paragraph ended before \Command was complete. Suggestions for Latin Modern

Hi, gang I hope this does not come too late:-) I have been using cmr for my work in the humanities up to now, and I have had to tweak things in sometimes satisfactory and other times less unsatisfactory ways. Here are some suggestions for the upcoming Latin Modern if it's not too late: 1. Make old-style numerals the default. This improves cmr for use in the humanities so much I'm almost surprised Knuth did not at least make a global old-style option. Alan Hoenig has made fontinst files for a virtual cmros; I have made a complete typescript for it, including a way to manage the bold case, for which Knuth only made a 10-point oldstyle size. I will present this package to the ConTeXt list in the coming days. There is still a small bug in cmros: it occasionally treats punctuation marks as part of the word when hyphenating, but otherwise I'm quite satisfied with it. 2. The main things I personally need are diacritics for transliteration. I'm using amateurish macros right now but a global font solution would be so much better. I'm including some of my own definitions which don't work in all circumstances. I especially have problems when switching from upright to slanted positions: a. a crescent under the letter `h': \def\h#1{\oalign{#1\crcr\hidewidth\SHIFT{34}% \vbox to.2ex{\hbox{\char'25}\vss}\hidewidth}} example: `\v Sa\h h' is a scientific transliteration of `Shaykh', based on the German ZDMG system. b. VERY IMPORTANT: When used often, \=i (\=\i in plain TeX) looks terrible; the bar over the `i' is too wide and runs into other letters. When used frequently (it is one of the most used in transliterating Arabic) it is really irritating. What good typesetters have done is make the bar over the `i' shorter. Now I'm sure that Hans and others can come up an elegant trick to redefine \=\i to get this bar shorter, but it seems to me to be wiser to just put it in the font. 4. Hi everybody, I have to typset several footnotes. I setup a bodyfont (sanserif, Helvetica like). Why are the footnotes typset in cmr? This is probably an easy one, but I couldn't figure it out: I want to set up a tabulation with a whitespace of 0.5 lines between rows. But no matter where I put my \blank, the tabulation always appears as packed. Thanks for your help! Struggles with \useblocks

Hi gang! I do not know why this does not work therefore the following: I have a document with several chapters. At the beginning an environment file is loaded. In the environment file there is a block defined as \defineblock[Impressum] and the block is immediately hidden with \hideblocks[Impressum] At the end of the document there is the chapter "Colofoon" \Chapter{Colofoon} \useblocks[Impressum] So far so good. But after compilation with texexec --final of the document there is the following statement in the log file. chapter : 14 Colofoon textblocks : second pass needed No block "Impressum" is typeset. By the way I am using: ConTeXt ver: 2003.8.21 fmt: 2003.8.22 int: english mes: english How is this to be explained? Willi

alignment of numbered lists

In Latex, the numbers in a numbered lists are aligned right by default. In Context, the default behavior seems to be left-aligned, which looks pretty ugly when item "9" is directly followed by "10." I can't seem to find how to change this. Any hints? Thanks, Thomas.

beginner question re: counters

Hi: I apologize for asking such a basic question. What is the correct way to increment a counter such that each time a macro is used, the counter is augmented by 1. So far, I have \newcount\MyCounter and have tried \advance\MyCounter by1 and a few other things I found online, but whenever I try to increase its value by 1, all references to it's value return 1. Not a particularly useful counter ;-) . Thanks, Matt

Endnotes and pagenumbering

I'm just learning ConTeXt, and am having a couple of problems with a document right now: 1. I'm try to set footnotes as endnotes at the end of every chapter, and have used \setupfootnotes[location=text, way=bychapter, conversion=numbers, rule=on] in my environment file, and use \placefootnotes at the end of the chapters. The endnotes are placed where I want, but there is no horizontal rule between the body text and the endnotes, and the numbering of the endnotes starts afresh with every new page in the chapter instead of being a continuous series. So I get endnotes numbered like 1,2,1,1,2,3,1,2.... instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8..... I've tried way=bypart and way=bytext and location=page in the setups, and it didn't affect the endnote typesetting at all. How to fix...? 2. I have been requested to get rid of all blank pages in the final pdf file, but keep the doublesided layout and numbering. Currently the page number is placed on the outside top margin. Putting alternative=singlesided in the pagenumbering setup gets rid of the blank pages but also will put every other page number on the inside when printed duplex. So is there a way to set no blank pages but still have doublesided pagenumbering within ConTeXt, or will I have to do some post processing of the output file? Hello, Suppose I have the following code: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah \startmpformula formula \stopmpformula and that it yields the following output blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah formula that is, the final "blah" is placed so far to the left of "formula" that it would be desireable to reduce the vertical space between the text and the formula such that we get the following output instead: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah formula The question is now: How do I do that? How to place footnotes in margin?

Hi, As ConTeXt is such a highly configurable set of macros (at least for those who know) I wonder if there's a way to place footnotes on page but not at the bottom - I'd like to have them e.g. in the margins. As there is no predefinded \setupfootnotes[location=inmargin] I tried something like \inmargin{\footnote{}The footnote's text.} Which doesn't really work - as it doesn't "flow": I you have a footnote at line 5 and line 6 then you have a problem because the second footnote doesn't wait for the first to be finished... Is there a better hack? Happy for feedback, Steffen

Hi everybody, While trying to setup a simple literature reference list I encounter the following problem: I have defined an enumeration. After typesetting the enumerated list I get on the first line the enumeration text and lost and alone in front of the second line the enumeration number. Is this something I do in a wrong way or is there a bug? Hi, Is there a way to have something like \indenting[hang] ? With the first line not indented, but the second and following lines? Hi! As usually chick got a problem which seems to have easy answer. Let's say I want to set header/footer text which has the following order: chaptername _____________________________ pagenumber I tried \setupheadertexts[\thinrule] \setupheadertexts[chapter][pagenumber][pagenumber][chapter] but that is not what I really need. Chaptername and pagenumber are underlined by thinrule and I want to separate thinrule and text with given glue/kern. I hardly try to avoid construction such as: \setupheadertexts[\ifodd\pageno\line{\chaptername \hrulefill \pagenumber}\else...\fi] where \chaptername is a previously defined reference to chapter title... Is there any other way to do that? I'm sure there is... Pawe/l

Hi, i'm currently writing a MP package and would like to have a printable source documentation. 'texexec --module' does this job very well, but there are two things that i would have changed for my documentation (not in general): - it always writes "ConTeXt" on top of the title page. Since my package is not related to ConTeXt, how can i replace it with a different title, i.e. the package name? - how can i activate an other color palette for pretty printing of the MP code? Hi, yesterday i've updated context and was surprised that texexec --help only shows: [jens@melior context]$ texexec --help TeXExec 4.0 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2003 --arrange process and arrange --batch run in batch mode (don't pause) --centerpage center the page on the paper --color enable color (when not yet enabled) --environment load some environments first =name : list of environments --fast skip as much as possible --figures typeset figure directory =a : room for corrections =b : just graphics =c : one (cropped) per page --nonstop run in non stop mode (don't pause) --usemodule load some modules first =name : list of modules --xmlfilter apply XML filter =name : list of filters Even 'texexec --help interface' results in no message at all. The reason for this is: (a) a couple of fixes but more important (b) updated texexec's / texutil's / texfont's, esp for windows users; fabrice is putting lot of effort to get the perl things working under windows with spacy paths so please let us know if thinsg run wrong (we may be able to fix things before the win32 texlive binaries are frozen and (c) support for the fourier fonts. in http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/texmf-extra.tar you can find the fonts; these will go on the coming texlive/ctan dvd (but not in the tex live main tree) therefore the extra prefix. Of course you can copy the extra tree over your local tree (don't forget mltexlsr). \setuptyping

Hi, For typing Java code in a context document, I use \starttyping ... \stoptyping. I have a problem when I configure \setuptyping in the following way : \setuptyping[typing][color=black,style=\ss,escape=/,option=commands] If I put characters like { or _ in my source (between \starttyping and \stoptyping) , they do not appear in the produced document { character is replaced by - character _ character is replaced by ' character etc.... If I configure setuptyping in the following way \setuptyping[typing][color=black,style=\tt,escape=/,option=commands] (just change \ss to \tt) everything is ok ! Any idea ? thanks in advance for any help jp

problems with embedded spaces in file paths (Win32)

I don't normally use Win32, but I want to convert our 4AllTeX addicts to TeX Live 2003. In testing release candidates, I encountered a few problems with context and texexec. The most recent tests were with the Sept. 5 release candidate (using the "install" CD). 1. on Win32, kpsewhich often fails to find texexec.ini. I created a texexec.ini in texmf-var/context/config and verified that it is listed in the ls-R. My conjecture is that this failure occurs if and only if the final component of the nme of the current working directory contains an embedded space, e.g., "C:\My Documents". Texexec takes a very long time to run (searching the texmf trees on an unloved and unwanted PIII 300mhz), so I haven't done a lot of testing/debugging. I haven't encountered any other kpathsea failures. I can work around this by tweaking texexec.pl, but it would be comforting to have an explanation. 2. ConTeXt texexec uses $ENV{"HOME"} to set a value in filename.tmp, e.g., on unix: $ cat try.tex \starttext \input story \stoptext $ texexec try $ cat try.tmp % try.top \unprotect \setupsystem[\c!gebied={/user/gwhite/}] %---- set from $ENV{"HOME"} \setupsystem[\c!n=1] \setupsystem[inputfile=try.tex] \protect If, e.g. HOME="/x y", the formatted document gets an extra page containing "y//cont-err". On Win32, it seems common to have spaces in "%HOME%". In particular, for WinXP, a value appears to be constructed by the texexec.ini binary (created using irun) if %HOME% is not set. How to set paths

Hello! In some special cases I need to set paths for input files directly from ConTeXt code not from config file. In manuals \setupexternalfigures is described. Is there any similar command for files that are inputed directly by \input, \typefile \processXMLfile (the last is the most interesting for me) and similar commands? If there isn't any special command for that, how to do that using some abrakadabra:-) Regards, Pawe/l

Bug? setupinteraction makes footnotenumber bold

For having the bookmarks when viewing my PDF in Acrobat I use \setupinteraction[state=start] But this forces the footnotenumbers (both in the text and in the footer) to be bold. Is this a known bug? Alternate/Swash Font in ConTeXt, how?

Does any of you cracks has experience in how to use the AGaramondAlternate Font in ConTeXt? I have no problems with the other Expert fonts but this one stays empty. As I am starting with a Mac font I am not sure which encoding to choose for generating the pfb file. Someone already did this journey? Steffen

Unfortunately I use the project structure and have made each chapter a component: \startproduct Kueppers_Buch \project KPPRS_0 \startfrontmatter \completecontent \stopfrontmatter \component Einleitung \startbodymatter \component Kap_1 \component Kap_2 \stopbodymatter \stopproduct Now the left empty page after the TOC has a pagenumber and also the empty last left page of "Einleitung" befor "Kap_1" begins etc. Is \definepagebreak also extendable for this case?

Hi, I guess this is very likely a FAQuestion but nevertheless I couldn't find the answer: When a new sectionblock or a chapter (page=right) is starting and ConTeXt is forced to add before that a left empty page then this empty page has naked pagenumber. So what is the code to make empty pages by default empty (no header, no pagenumber)? Sorry for this probably silly question, but I truely might be happy for an answer. Thanks, Steffen.
