margintext drifting down the page

Hello all. I have an odd behaviour which I think I just about understand but can't fix. I use \margintext{Note that ...} to place little notes into the margin next to things in the running text. It has worked beautifully for all my content up till now, but I now find myself wanting to put a note next to a \bTABLE...\eTABLE and the margin text now drifts down so that it is beside the content that follows the table, rather than next to the table itself. So, \margintext{This works well} Normal running text takes a margintext without problems... but \margintext{This drifts down below the table} \bTABLE \bTR ... ... \eTABLE The margintext appears next to this normal running text... I'm using the latest stable release. I'd be happy with a workaround that enables me to have this appearance. I have tried putting a \strut in front of the table but this only shifts the margintext up a little bit. Is there something else I can do? (I tried wrapping the table in a \vtop, and in an \hbox, and in an invisible \frame, but no luck.) Thanks for any help. Duncan

Czech patterns in TeXlive2003

Hello, Petr Olsak has changed slightly Czech pattern file czhyph.tex for TeXlive2003, it's a bit `Babelized' now. It produces \errmessage for Babel's \addlanguage being \undefined. It also contains several ugly hacks to make both plain and LaTeX read \v and \' syntax for Czech accents, and finally it reads czhyphen.tex containing real patterns. The result is that generating ConTeXt format ends with the \errmessage. Simple workaround is to change alias in cont-usr.tex to pattern files from czhyph.tex to czhyphen.tex. My discussion with Petr Olsak suggests to make a more systematic correction: to add a test into czhyph.tex and make it directly read czhyphen.tex if ConTeXt is detected. This needs two things to make sure: 1. Is it OK to read patterns with \v and \' syntax into ConTeXt? 2. Is there a way to detect ConTeXt in order to put into czhyph.tex something like: \ifx\<something-typical-to-detect-ConTeXt>\undefined \else % for ConTeXt \input czhyphen.tex \endinput \fi Is there a more systematic/clean solution? Hi all, Writing examinations I want to tell my students the points of each question and the max points they can reach. "bug" in OC support

Yet another itemize question

Is this a bug or a feature? Please compare these two setups: \setupitemize[1][n,inmargin][margin=2em,alignment=left,stopper=)] This does what I want: I get a numbered list with numbers aligned raggedleft. \setupitemize[n,inmargin][margin=2em,alignment=left,stopper=)] According to the manual, this should do exactly the same. But I get a list with bullets. My problem is that I want two different kind of lists in my document, and when I use definition # 1, all the lists seem to be numbered, even if I specify \startitemize[2,packed,joinedup] later on. Any hints will be welcome! Best Thomas

Dithering (off-topic)

Good evening. I apologize to ask a little off-topic question, but I don't know where to ask (and it is closely related to TeX and PDF). I typeset a church bulleting. It is printed on a laserjet printer (600 dpi), and then copied on a copy machine. As for letters, all is right. But figures (photos) are this way spoiled. I guess it would help either to force PDF to print the figures in some very low resolution (150 dpi), or (probably better) to dither the figures and include them in PNG (instead of ordinary JPEG). Can some of you tell me how to do it? I tried ImageMagick's convert to dither the photos, but outcomes were really poor. Is there some good free software for this (in the best case in Linux)? Or can I do it some way in PDF? Many thanks for any hint. Michal Kvasnicka

Kerning pairs for Optima-Italic

Hi, after I converted MacOSX's Optima.dfont for usage with TeX I experienced that this Adobe Optima (Regular, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic, ExtraBold) doesn't have extra kerning pairs. (And I don't have any idea how to create these on my own.) So I had a look at WalterSchmidt's page (home.vr-web.de/was/fonts.html), and fortunately he provides files for Regular and Bold - which work fine - but not Italic or BoldItalic fonts. So now I just have to find metric files (including kering pairs) for Adobe Optima-Italic and Optima-BoldItalic. Does anybody can help me with that? Thank you, Steffen.

Shutting down Acrobat Reader.

I am creating an e-book following the example program d-en-all.tex as found on the Context site. I have a question about the "exit" button. This button shuts down the current document but leaves Acrobat Reader still up and running. If the user is in full screen mode he has to do an <alt><esc> to get back to normal mode (from fullscreen) and then exit the Acrobat Reader using a menu. I am looking for a technique that would exit everythig when the user pushes the "exit" button. Interrupted framebox around text.

configuration (texutil?) problem

Hi all! I had to change an operating system temporarly; now I use win98, but I haven't change ConTeXt installation and configuration at all. I'm not sure if win version causes the problem, but I can't see any other reasons... Anyway, the problem is that I can't build a list of contents. A sample zzz.tex file looks like this: \starttext \completecontent \chapter{Some chapter} \section{One section} \section{Another section} \chapter{And one more chapter} \section{And one more section} \stoptext After running such a code with command 'texexec --pdf zzz.tex'. At the end of job texexec says: run time : 4 seconds sorting and checking : running texutil total run time : 4 seconds There is no another run, the file is processed only ones. There is no 'zzz.tuo' in output. So I tried to test texutil running it directly with command 'texutil --references zzz.tui' (not sure if it is correct...). But the strangest thing is that texutil says: action : processing commands, lists and registers error : empty input file zzz.tui Of course zzz.tui is NOT empty. Does anybody know what may be responsible for that? TeXexec version: 2.8 TeXutil version: 7.3 THanks in advance, Pawe/l

Dear Contexnicians, I believe that pdfs can make multiple use of pictures (and other objects). I have a fairly large picture which I want to include a number of times, once as the full picture and several other times concentrating on a portion of it. As a bonus, comments can be added to the commands (as in etexshow), but since you are not alone on the www, you can share and enjoy! One day I will add a section for examples. You can then share your favorite examples with all the other ConTeXt users out there. Visual creators for ConTeXt

Hi, I promised link to creators for ConTeXt ;) http://www.im.ps.pl/context/?en (and http://www.im.ps.pl/context/ for polish users) But - please note - there is early pre-beta version ;) I will work to increase functionality and performance of this. It works in IE6 (tested) and Gecko engine browsers (but there are some errors in display). Tables: left mouse button - select, right menu. Flowcharts: left button - inside object - choice type and changing text, 'o' is a connect point... There will be more helps at the site (in the future) :) For now, just try by clicking ;) If anybody has some advices or wishes please contact - I hope I will implement much more than now. PS. columns and alignment at the bottom

Hi, I am trying to typeset a text which should look roughly like that: |-----| |-----| |------| |text | |text | |text | | | |-----| | | |-----| | | |-----| | | |-----| |text | | | |text | |-----| |------| | | | | |-----| |------| | | |text | |text | |-----| |-----| |------| So I have a frames with some text (actually, addresses - Hans, maybe you remember the address booklet I showed you here in Darmstadt) in three columns. So I tried something like: \startcolumns[n=3] \framed{first address...} \vskip 0.5cm plus 1fill \framed{second address...} \vskip 0.5cm plus 1fill \framed{third address...} . . . \stopcolumns Which (obviously because I use TeX code inside ConTeXt - shame on me) fails, the frames are not aligned at the bottom. So I'm looking for a way to typeset them with a distance of at least 0.5cm and align at the bottom - the remaining space should be spread equally... I hope the question is understandable and I hope someone has already done something like this... See for example the following: The generated empty pages after the TOC (page 2), and after the last chapter (14 and 15) all have pagenumbers. Quite ugly. How to get rid of them? I am a newbie to context. I have a management protocol for transplantation patients which would be great if presented in a format similar to the conteni document. Is the setup for the same available or is this proprietary and not available? Are any other setups of similar functionality available as source files? I intend to use pdfscreen and lyx if this is not possible, however the layout and searchability of the conteni are far superior and would help the doctors on the ward if this can be achieved without me having to spend more than a weekend on this.context is a longterm goal of course but any help now will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged in the protocol. regards vivek

Centering lines of poetry.

Here is a deceptively simple requirement: An author writes poetry where lines are ended by a carriage retrun and stanzas are ended by a blank line. Problem: How to enclose those lines somehow so that all lines are centered yet font changes are allowed. Of course \centerline{} works but this requires tagging each line. page arranging

Hi, I'd like to place 2 A5 pages on a A4 landscape page. I tried with \setuppapersize[A5][A4,landscape] \setuparranging[doublesided] and some other options. But the best result I got were A4 pages with 2 *identical* A5 pages (was this the "duplex" option?) Expert fonts

Expert fonts have been mentioned on this list several times, but I'd like to know if anybody could point me to e tutorial/example how to make them work in Context. The background of my question: on my Mac, I have a nice-looking truetype font "HoeflerText" which has most glyphs of an expert font (oldstyle numbers, small caps, additional ligatures etc.), and I wonder if it would be possible to split it up into several type 1 fonts (via pfaedit) and make them work like an expert family. Any suggestions about this? Thanks! Thomas

Natural Tables (all options)

Hello, with a lot of help of Lutz (member of this list) I am now able to produce Context files and compile them to PDF. Now I am reading the documentation and some emails from this list to learn some details. I played a little bit with natural tables (also read the examples in ennatab.pdf) - but I think that is not all what is possible with natural tables. Wehre can I find a documetation with all options for nat. tabs? At the examples there was no table with round corners. But I found a parameter for it -I tried: \\eTABLE[corner=round] with the result: every cell was round. It looks funny but is not the thing I was looking for. I want to have round corners arround the table: left corner top and bottom right corner top and bottom 1. How does it work? 2. Where can I find all parameters/options for natural tables (I googled with no success). Jörg

Hi, I use \placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection] to get the bookmarks (or outline) shown in Acrobat Reader. Unfortunally, this doesn't seem to work here (acroread 5.08/linux; \def\contextversion{2003.9.26}): There are no bookmarks at all. The other problem I have is: the letter \"a comes out as 'dobuildtextaccent char 127 a' in the 'Document Info' of acrobat which looks kind of ugly and hampers the searchability using htdig. Last but not least, I have a hyphenation problem with URLs: I have e.g. +----------------------------------------------+ | | | [...] http://mathworld.wolfram.com/CylindricalCoordinates. | html. | +----------------------------------------------+ I now want to have this instead: +----------------------------------------------+ | | | [...] http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Cylindri | | calCoordinates.html. | +----------------------------------------------+ i.e. a hyphenation not at the / or . characters but within the word (and without a hyphen). font scaling

After doing some work, I think I now have a wonderful working collection of classical Greek fonts. There is one thing I'd love to implement though, but I wonder if it's possible. i guess I have to begin by describing my approach: every Greek font is provided by a .tex file which has the following content (in part, this is Giuseppe Bilotta's work, he got me started on this): \definebodyfont[10pt,11pt,12pt,14pt][rm][Gf=Ibycus] \def\enablegreek{\language[greek]\catcode`~=\other\catcode`|=\other\catc ode`'=\other} \def\startgreek{\par\begingroup\Gf\enablegreek} \let\stopgreek\endgroup \def\localgreek{\groupedcommand{\Gf\enablegreek}{}} Then, the file declares a couple of special symbols like so \define\koppa{\getglyph{Ibycus}{\char37}} The Greek font is declared by using \input Ibycus in the preamble of the document. I have a collection of 6 fonts; when I want to switch between them, I just replace \input Ibycus by \imput someotherfile. All of this works wonderfully for the time being. Now the problem: most of the time, I want to mix Greek and Latin fonts, and in order to do this, some sort of scaling has to be done (because the size of different Latin fonts varies so much). Right now, I do this by editing the input file like so \definebodyfont[10pt,11pt,12pt,14pt][rm][Gf=Ibycus sa 1.05] but I wonder if it would be possible to do this more elegantly: is there a way to make this an argument that will be passed on automatically? What I'm dreaming of is something like this \input Ibycus[sa 1.05] and it would automatically scale at 1.05. Any ideas how this could be achieved? The useful d-en-all.tex example shows buttons used for accessing Acrobat Reader functions and also for jumping to the Contents page. I would like to create a button that would jump to the back-of-book index. The info in the manual is a bit terse and I don't quite follow it. also, I read posts referring to a \button command. Hi, I am posting this message I posted to the 'OS X TeX' group earlier this year relating to the same issue that Mathew is raising. I had no luck then but am hoping for more success now there are two of us. Hans says 'this is under discussion now with thomas/staszek/etc: has to do with urw metrics not being in tetex by default (they are on tex live)' However, Gerben's i-Installer installs them here in a different location than normal. (I think these are the only pair of files that are necessary for utmb8a to work.) /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/afm/urw/times/utmb8a.afm /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/type1/urw/times/utmb8a.pfb I believe that the problem is merely with texroot as I state below. Further evidence for this is that it nearly all worked before Gerben rearranged the directories. Earlier message....... Hi, Some of my previous font problems here were due to not enabling all of the font map file in the final configuration of the install. I think someone else had the same problem. Adobekb.tex is now helping me well, however I am finding it necessary still to run with the Context font system for some documents for the moment, and for this texfont has to run to create the various font files. Running the single command texfont --en=8r --ve=urw --co=courier --so=auto Should work but returns processing aborted : unknown tex root /sw/share/texmf/ Clearly texroot is set incorrectly so forcing that texfont --en=8r --ve=urw --co=courier --so=auto --fontroot=/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/ Should work but returns processing aborted : unknown subpath ../fonts/afm/urw/courier And yet /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/afm/urw/courier/ucrb8a.afm Exists This process worked in the v2 version of the i-installer indeed still works when reinstalled. Maybe one further element that would suggest Context is using a cached copy of the tfm-file instead of the newly created file: when I move the file Myfont.tfm out of the $home/texmf/fonts/tfm directory, pdftex gives me the expected error "! I can't find file `Myfont'." However, Context will still happily produce output--with an outdated copy of the tfm! So context must be caching it somewhere, and I need to flush that cache. Anyone an idea how this can be done? Thanks Thomas

\inmargin{} problems with typsetting inmargin texts

Hi all, I got a text, where the left i.e. the inner margin is small (.8cm) and the right margin is larger (1.7cm). This layout is intended for a doublesided print. On different places I have to insert a \inmargin{\bf Let op!} (i.e. pay attention). The strange thing is, that on lefthandpages the inmargin text is typset in the left (outer) margin but it is typeset on two lines, indicating that the measures of the leftmargin of the righthandpage is used. - Is this a normal behaviour or otherwise how can I instruct ConTeXt to use the whole width of the left i.e. outer margin? I start in /home/bmi/import/TestConTeXt/blocks/ with four files: demo.tex = the project-file eniro.tex = the enviroment student.tex = a data-file with two text-blocks test.tex = a work-file, which will use text-blocks from student.tex all things are pretty good -- in test.tex I can use the text-blocks from student.tex (student.tub). When I separate the dat-file = student.tex and the work-file work-file = test.text in different subdirs it ist not possible to use the text-blocks form student.tex in test.tex ~/import/TestConTeXt/blocks/data/student.tex with all help-files -- all things are ok ~/import/TestConTeXt/blocks/work/test.tex running texexec test.tex, no text-block from student.tex In file test.tmp: % test.top \unprotect \setupsystem[\c!gebied={/home/bmi/}] \setupsystem[\c!n=1] \setupsystem[inputfile=test.tex] \protect How have I to set up the path? \usepath[/import/TestConTeXt/blocks/] or \usepath[/home/bmi/import/TestConTeXt/blocks/] ??? \usesubpath[dat, work] or \usesubpath[dat/, work/] ??? first attempt to run mp

Hi all! I've just made a quick test -- running metapost with ConTeXt. The sample code was just: \starttext The simplest metapost code sample \startMPgraphic fill unitsquare scaled 123 withcolor (.2,.3,.4) ; \stopMPgraphic \stoptext which looks ok, right? And of course mpost creates nice navy square from that code. But running texexec --automprun sample.mp cause a serious system error; ''There is a problem with mpost.exe and bla bla bla''. Smart and clever' windows XP try to report that problem to microsoft. The problem occur just after terminal says This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2c 7.3.7x) (mpgraph.mp and after that system display an error box. As manual says I 've made some changes in texmf.cnf: openout_any = a shell_escape = t allow_multiple_suffixes = f What should I do next to catch 'serious system error' while running metapost code included in tex code? Hi all! I came across the same problem twice in different operating systems, so... As I wrote about two weeks ago, I 've generated context format with command texexec --make --language=pl,en,de --bodyfont=plr en expecting to have format 'cont-en.efmt' (with english interface) which includes polish and english hyphenation patterns, with PL as default language and PLR as default font. LOG file created during format creation shows what I would expect: \unprotect \installlanguage[\s!pl][\c!status=\v!start] \installlanguage[\s!en][\c!status=\v!start] \installlanguage[\s!de][\c!status=\v!start] \setupcurrentlanguage[\s!pl] \definetypescriptsynonym[cmr][plr]\definefilesynonym[font-cmr][font-plr] \protect \endinput The thing I can't understand is that when I compile any file (like 'Hello wórld!\end') log file says: language : language en is active and Missing character: There is no ˇ in font cmr12! and so on. Encodings doesn't matter in this case. The point is why cmr12, not plr12 is used and why english language, not polish is active? Oh, by the way; how can I change default TeX machine for ConTeXt? I mean how to change it using still 'texexec' command (not 'any_tex_machine &cont-en.efmt')? And another question; how to generate *.fmt format (for TeX, not for eTeX) with 'texexec --make' command? Hi, when defining an unusual size for my footnotes \setupfootnotes[bodyfont=8.5pt, ... ] I get an amazing amount of messages bodyfont: bodyfont XXpt is defined (can be better done global) with XX being various sizes. Which makes processing real slow... What is meant by "global defining"? Where should I write a "global" definition and how does it look like? Sorry, but I really have now idea. Thank you, Steffen

I'm (mis)using ConTeXt flowcharts for drawing support maps "which device stands where". I don't know how to draw further elements (walls etc.), but that's not that important at the moment. To show the "user side" of a device I'd like to draw an arrow to it. Good evening. I dare to ask one more question: For many years I use a dirty approach to typesetting quotes. I the document I simply type "words in quotes", and then I switch the quotes to be an active character with some macros. But this brings a lot of garbage to bookmarks. Now it even makes an error with the new version of ConTeXt (ver: 2003.8.21). Can I temporaryly switch quotes to category 12 (just for bookmark processing)? How? With many thanks Michal Kvasnicka P.S. Bug in interaction mechanism?

Good morning. I'm sorry I bother you all again with the same thing, but it seems to me unexplained. (Well, at least I think so. I have some problems with my mail some weeks. Anyway, I wasn't able to find any answer in ConTeXt-archives.) The problem is this: It seems that I can't set both interaction-color and the interaction-text together. The following code: \definecolor[interactioncolor][r=0.25882, g=0.25098, b=0.56078] \setupinteraction[state=start, focus=standard, style=, color=interactioncolor] \setupcombinedlist[content][interaction=text] brings strange error messages: ! Hi, Anybody has an experience with TeXLive (8 or 7) - what is the smallest installation type for working with ConTeXt and (absolutely necessary) MetaFun - I tried 'generic basic' and 'generic recommended' but I can't make MP graphics - I have a problem with it again ;( Of course 'full' installation works fine, but I have no idea what I need in smaller installation to working fine... Probably I forgot change something (again) in config files - in log I have: This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.11a-2.1 (Web2c 7.5.2) (format=cont-en 2003.10.6) 6 OCT 2003 04:15 entering extended mode %&-line parsing enabled. ... \openout0 = `_back-mpgraph.mp'. \openout0 = `_back-mprun.mp'. \openout0 = `mpgraph.mp'. \openout0 = `mprun.mp'. ... [MP to PDF] (./_back-mpgraph.1) [2.2] \openout5 = `_back-mpgraph.mp'. mpost -progname=mpost -mem=metafun _back-mpgraph system()...disabled. ... and no graphic in pdf. Hi, Just in case some one is interested in detailed footnote problems: In the last time I was fiddling a lot on the problem of setting up footnotes - the task was to have different defined font and interlinespace sizes for text as well as for footnotes. The first solution that I constructed with commands and keywords from the manual (and etexshow) seemed to give the desired result: \setupbodyfont[10pt] \setupinterlinespace[line=15pt] \definefont [FNfont][Serif at 8pt] \def\FNstyle{\FNfont\setupinterlinespace[line=15pt]} \setupfootnotes[numbercommand=] \setupfootnotedefinition[style=\FNstyle] \starttext \input tufte \footnote{\input knuth } \input tufte \footnote{\input knuth } \stoptext But it just worked OK for *normal* sizes. When set to extreme values it begun to show strange phenomena (see the distances over and under each first line of a footnote): \setupbodyfont[4pt] \setupinterlinespace[line=45pt] \definefont [FNfont][Serif at 4.5pt] \def\FNstyle{\FNfont\setupinterlinespace[line=12pt]} \setupfootnotes[numbercommand=] \setupfootnotedefinition[style=\FNstyle] \starttext \input tufte \footnote{\input knuth } \input tufte \footnote{\input knuth } \stoptext After re-combining the different option and command for setupfootnotes and setupfootnotedefinition without improvement, I started to search through the source files and found the very interesting command \setfootnotebodyfont. With this command a setup can be written that works, finally: \setupbodyfont[4pt] \setupinterlinespace[line=45pt] \definefont [FNfont][Serif at 4.5pt] \def\setfootnotebodyfont{\FNfont\setupinterlinespace[line=12pt]} \setupfootnotes[numbercommand=] \setupfootnotedefinition[style=\FNfont] \starttext \input tufte \footnote{\input knuth } \input tufte \footnote{\input knuth } \stoptext Maybe this helps someone. Tk.pm is a perl module. It was missing on SGI Irix too. Perl has a tools to automate the installation of modules, but you may need some libraries as well (Tk/Tcl, compression, etc.) which can either be installed under Perl or for use with other applications. I'm interested regarding the update process since there is no separate ebuild for ConTeXt package, how do you keep pace with the rapid development. \chapter with \vbox?

Dear friends. I want to typeset a document on a grid. Moreover I want to typeset each chapter heading on a separate page this way: \blank[5*line] ... here is motto... \vfil ... here is the chapter title and chapter number... \blank[5*line] I must include it in a \vbox. I tried \vbox to \textheight, but now the motto doesn't fit to a grid. How could I do it? Many thanks for your help. Michal Kvasnicka P.S. How change separator between two authors?

Hi, I use your bib module but in case of two authors I need comma as separator between them instead of 'and'. How can I change it? And additionally how can I do list of publications like that: [1] Entry ... [10] Entry (entry numbers aligned to right with []) instead of 1 Entry ... 10 Entry (entry numbers aligned to left) ?... -- Best regards, Martin

Hello again: When I compile my context documents with the command: texexec --pdf myfile usually I will have an extra empty page as the last page of the document. Why is there 1pt space between footnotes?

Hi, I am almost sure that I tried every possible combination of commands and options, but still there seems to be a minimal distance between footnotes that can't be erased. My idea was just to have small footnotes without any extra distance between them. But there always was about 1pt or 2pt distance. Anybody an idea? Thank you, Steffen

Hi, How I can do somethink like that: Chapter 1 Chapter title (but in the \completecontent should be only Chapter title) by typing only \chapter{Chapter title} - I tried with command#1#2 but I couldn't put Chapter title in new line and I couldn't do it only for numbering chapters. -- Best regards, Martin

Hi, How I can make line under text in headers like that: pagenumber section title | chapter title pagenumber --------------------------- | ---------------------------- odd and even page in ascii art ;) I have \setupheadertexts[text][pagenumber][section][chapter][pagenumber] and I tried use style=\Command for \setupheader where Command is framed with bottom frame but there are problems with aligment - is it other way to do it ?... -- Best regards, Martin

The tex/mp lexers are already in the official scite distribition but i fixed/adde a few things, so this version is newer. I can generate linux binaries later if there is a need for them. The cscite zip also has a preliminary (installation) manual. Hi, I want to Know if it's possible to add others pdf files to a former one resulting from a ConteXt compilation. It's because I make technical drawings with Autocad wich are printed (at the right scale !) to a pdf file (By Distiller or Amunyi converter), and I want those in more general (text+drawings) documents. One solution is openoffice, but it's not the right place! Thanks a lot, olivier Turlier

Ahoi! I installed the latest beta this afternoon, and all of my colored flowcharts went black. After some searching I recognized, that \setupcolors syntax has changed, the "system" parameter is dropped. That is, where I had \setupcolors[state=start, system=cmyk] I now must write \setupcolors[state=start, cmyk=yes, mpcmyk=yes, rgb=no] Perhaps someone can use this hint also... I also changed the "import latex" statment in my SciTEGlobal.properties to "import tex" so that Hans' new tex.properties is loaded instead.
