Good evening. How can I make \cite[authoryear][SomeoneAndAnother1999] to produce Someone a Another (1999) instead of Someone and Another (1999), i.e. to change `and' to the Czech `a'? 90° rotation+landscape

page setup

I am trying to typeset 2 A5 pages onto 1 A4 page in landscape format, side by side. Thus typesetting the pages two at a time on one piece of paper, in their natural order, seeing them as a spread. Something like xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x x x x 1 x 2 x going on for 3, 4, etc. x x x xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I do not seem to get that job done. The context code I tried: \setuppapersize[A5][A4,landscape] \setuplayout[location=doublesided,marking=on,grid=yes,header=0mm,margin= 12mm] \setuppagenumbering[location=footer,location=margin,alternative=doublesi ded] \setuparranging[2*1] % or [doublesided] or [mirrored] The \setuparranging (in the above variations) sends TeX into an infinite loop. Of course [2*2] will not work, it gives booklets of 4 pages instead of 2. Maybe it can be done without the \setuparranging, but I could not find out how. The context version I use is: ConTeXt ver: 2003.12.12 fmt: 2003.12.13 int: english mes: english I would appreciate some help very much. Hans van der Meer

I am negotiating a largish contract with an UK publisher to typeset a technical book, with several tables. The sources will be furnished the customer along with the PDF. They are concerned that if in the future I were not available for any reason what alternate person or persons they could turn to. Those of you who do typesetting and layout for fees and who might be interested in taking over such a task should it become necessary are asked to reply off-list to type(a)wexfordpress.com. Ahoi! I just reviewed my german ConTeXt tutorial and tried to tell the truth about all the table modes. Please correct me if I'm wrong: * tabulate - can break over several pages - [start|stop]tabulate[head|tail] should define a repeated head/tail, but it doesn't work - documented in the manual (cont-en[i|p]) * table - cannot break - based on Wichura's TaBlE (others not) - can be used as float (others not?) - documentation commercial at pctex.com (39 $), partly docs in "ConTeXt - an excursion" (m[s|p]-cb-en) * tables - same as table, but can break over several pages - [start|stop]table[head|tail] works - nowhere documented? * TABLE - didn't try page breaks yet; should it work? - [b|e]TABLE works; should [start|stop]TABLE also? - docs: up-to-date 8 (no link on HP!), enattab * new table mode? Windows xp user wants to begin with context

Hi I'm a complete ms word user who wants to convert to context to make his mathematical textbooks. I have windows xp on my computer, but nothing (really nothing like perl, editor's or distribution) else. What exactly have i to do make my pc work with context? By the way, don't say to me to read the how to install context manual which are not meant to read by absolute beginners. I've spent hours on looking around on internet, on the pragma-website, reading manuals, but i don't find something clear and simple what tells me exactly to do and in which order to let me begin working with context. There seems to be so many pre-knowledge about perl, command line commands, and so on.. But can anybody out there please tell me how i can start from the very beginning. I would appreciate your advise very much. To set it clear: i'm not a linux or unix-user, i use windowx xp. I really want to begin with context, but there seems to be so many obstacles to overwin. texexec --pdfselection with selection range

Hello, how I can use TeXExec --pdfselection with a selection range? If I try --selection=3-50,52-90 I get an error. It works if I write --selection=3,4,5,6,7,... but this is quite labourous and one needs to make sure that one has not forgot a single number. (I try to cut out the colour pages to save some paper (60 sheets) while printing to the b/w printer.) Tobias

JPEG file couldn't be read

Hi all, this is most probably a pdfetex question, but I don't feel like subscribing to a new list to have it answered. I get the error message: Error: pdfetex (file ./rimg0016.jpg): reading JPEG image failed on a \useexternalfigure definition and \externalfigure call. Typing "file rimg0016.jpg" gets me "rimg0016.jpg: JPEG image data, EXIF standard 0.77, 42 x 0" and the file is shown as expected by "display rimg0016.jpg". This all happens under a TeXLive 7 distribution on a Debian Woody Linux box. Any ideas how I have to convert the files to please pdfetex? Pagebreak in columns

Good evening. I typeset a document in two columns on a grid. Sometimes a page is one row longer than it should be. How can I make it not to do it? (I don't care for widows and things like that, I can correct them manually). I know this was disscussed before but I can find the text of the thread in any archive, just the link. Any hint? chart bug

Hi, I have noticed that if I use \comment command in my chart and there are two of them with two \setupFLOWcharts command then the \comment command does not produce text. I know the code is bug free because deleting one of the charts (including \setupFLOWcharts) makes the \comment text re-appear. Any help in working around this bug will be appreciated. A small example is at the bottom. I believe I have the latest downloads from Gierben Wierda's distribution for Mac OS X. basic formatting in ConTeXt

I am new to ConTeXt and have what are doubtless some very basic questions. I have checked the manuals and the archives of this list and of the TeX on Mac OS X list the, but have not found what I am looking for yet. What I need is (a) to set up the footers and headers in a book so that there is only a footer on the first page and only a header on subsequent pages, (b) to define the first page number (c) to set the color of a page in its entirety. Any pointers to documents, solutions, or worked examples in ConTeXt will be very much appreciated. I have some idea of how to do these things in Plain TeX, but should really like to migrate to ConTeXt. Alan

Hello,everybody, I have a problem while using context to create some flowcharts. The beginning of my tex source file looks like: \setupoutput[pdftex] \usemodule[chart] Naturally I got a flowchart in pdf version. But a pdf version flowchart is not suitable for inserting into a paper or a report. Then I try to use software to convert it from pdf format into some other imgage formats. But none of them was satisfied. I wonder how can I direct get a flowchart in some imgage formats (e.g. in png, jpg format) from the source tex file. Hi all, I was under the (mistaken?) impression that "textbar" (for "|") was predefined somewhere in the distribution, but couldn't find anyhting. So I defined it myself in the preamble of my document: \define\textbar{\getglyph{Roman}{\char124}} and it seems to be working. Is this the proper way to do this? Best Thomas

Hyphenation of URLs with and without interaction

Hello, If you run the test case below, once with and once without \statupinteraction[state=start], you realize that this influences the hyphenation. Using interaction, the URL is only hyphenated at '/', '.' etc. Using no interaction, also the words are hyphenated. Indentation after formulas

Hello, Compiling the following results in indented text following the formula: % interface=en tex=pdfetex output=pdftex \usemodule [nath] \setupindenting [medium] \starttext \section{Some section} Let \placeformula \[ f(x) = x^2, \] where $x$ means nothing. \stoptext I'd like "where $x$ means nothing." not to be indented as a new paragraph. Eeeep! m-bib/bibtex stopped working

For some reason I cannot get bibtex to create my bibliography files for a paper typeset in context with m-bib. When I run bibtex, I get the following error. [231] 10:25AM% bibtex clarifyingObfuscation_ctx ~/Sandia/52597/Whitebox/pureWhite/current This is BibTeX, Version 0.99c (Web2C 7.5.2) The top-level auxiliary file: clarifyingObfuscation_ctx.aux I couldn't open style file cont-no.bst ---line 2 of file clarifyingObfuscation_ctx.aux : \bibstyle{cont-no : } I'm skipping whatever remains of this command I found no style file---while reading file clarifyingObfuscation_ctx.aux (There were 2 error messages) The aux file contais just the following three lines: \citation{*} \bibstyle{cont-no} \bibdata{crypto} And the m-bib setup lines I am using are as follows: \def\brnum#1% {[#1]} \usemodule[bib] \setupbibtex[database=crypto] % use crypto.bib %\setuppublications[alternative=aps] % you don't have the 'aps' choice, yet \setuppublications[numbering=yes,refcommand=num,numbercommand=\brnum] \setuppublicationlist[author=\normalauthor, artauthor=\normalauthor, editor=\normalauthor, surnamesep=, namesep={, }, finalnamesep={, }, lastnamesep={, }, firstnamesep=\ ] I have tried copying the *.bst files into the working directory, which did not work (I get the exact same error from bibtex). Hello, if I understand Latin Modern correctly, it contains the \Psi both as upright and as italic version (CM has only the upright version). How can I get the italic version? But a pdf version flowchart is not suitable for inserting into a paper or a report. Then I try to use software to convert it from pdf format into some other imgage formats. But none of them was satisfied. I wonder how can I direct get a flowchart in some imgage formats (e.g. in png, jpg format) from the source tex file. Unable to customize publication list

Hi, another m-bib problem from it.comp.software.tex ... it seems that none of the "list customizations" options (i.e. neither the \setuppublicationlist nor \setuplist[pubs] allows to change the numbercommand parameter (e.g. to put brackets around the bibref number in the list); a quick glance at the log shows that the numbercommand is getting overruled by \initializepublist ... how to cope with this? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

hi, I have two problems and I will be pleased if someone could help me. I'm working on my final work for school and the first problem: \title Abstrakt (in Czech) \title Abstract (in English) I need to have both of them on one page! Localizing the bibliography

Hi all, as a follow-up to a request on it.comp.software.tex (ya know, I managed to trick a couple of Italians in using ConTeXt ;)): the m-bib module and companion files have a bunch of strings that get inserted in the bibliography list; some of them are localizable (e.g. the "and" or the "et.al."), others are not; the idea would be that all the strings should be localizable; a couple of nonparametrized strings that come to mind are "pages" or "PhD thesis". -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

I am trying to find a euro symbol for my work. I have \def\euro{\uchar{32}{172}} [character € which I got from some XSL-FO literature I downloaded] and I use \defineXMLentity [euro] {\euro} as I am transforming from XML. What I then get is ! Font \unicodefont=UnicodeRegular20 at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. MikTeX has a comprehensive package manager, and I have tried installing packages "uni" [billed as "The Universal Font"] and "universa" but no joy. Does anyone know where to get this font? Multiple charts of different size

Hi, I am using \usemodule[chart] and following the manual mchart.pdf. But I cannot figure out how to get two charts, one of size [nx=4,ny=4] and one of size [nx=4,ny=1] in the same document, without the second one occupying the same physical space as the first one. It seems that I can have only one \setupFLOWcharts command in effect. Is there any way to get around this? Thanks, --shiv--

FLOWcharts connection bug

Hello Hans and everyone! Every connection whose origin is the bottom of a cell and that goes somewhere upwards, draws first up into the cell. Connections from bottom to bottom cause always a metapost error. (ConTeXt 2004-01-13; TeXLive 7 on WinNT; pdfTeX 1.11a-2.1) Some nice-to-have features of FLOWchart connections would be: - crossing vertical lines should draw an bow at the crossing (configurable) - force a line to go via some point (cell coordinate) or several points instead shortest way - parallel lines should draw side by side Herzliche Grüße! ------------------- Henning Hraban Ramm

I tried (a) \kap in \setupheadertexts, but then \getmarking gets not expanded (I only get 'CHAPTER :' which looks rather strange) (b) Using \uppercased in \setupheadertext produces an error (c) Using \setupheader[style=kap] or style=\uppercased produces errors Tobias * * * I use \setupheadertexts [][{\it\getmarking[sectionnumber]~~~\getmarking[section]}] [{\it Chapter \getmarking[chapternumber]: \getmarking[chapter]}][] which works well. Ah OK. But as far as I see the "command=" overwrites other possible settings like margin etc. Do I have to include these descriptions in \MyNoteList in a more TeX way? For example: How do I set the notes with size 10pt, interlinespace 11pt, a margin 2cm and after space \blank? Maybe you could give me an example for the code needed here? irregular typesetting area

Dear Contexers, I would like to repeat my question (see below) because I neither got an answer nor found a solution on my own. I believe that \defineoverlay cannot produce a solution for my problem because this command puts pictures in a different layer and so the main text is not affected (i.e. text is printed on top of underlying pictures). Are there any hints available? Ole I'm trying to produce an irregular (more than 4 corners) typesetting (main text) area of the following shape: ... (header) .... _____________________________________ ( logo / | ... text area ... | overlay background) | | ________________________| | | | ... ... | | | | | ________________________| | |(logo | | /overlay background) | ... text area ... | |___________________________________| The reason of this wish is not to overwrite the displayed logos or overlay pictures, which are used to form a common layout for a brochure. Btw., the orientation of the logos / pictures changes from even to odd pages. The measures of the logos / pictures prohibit a solution just by putting them in the header or footer. footnotes are lost!! endnotes don't work ? (URGENT)

Hi, as the commands "location=text" and "\placefootnotes" seemed to be unproblematic I decided to edit a book in ConTeXt with footnotes as endnotes - at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately there seems to be a bug: My first chapter has 57 footnotes. The first 17 footnotes fit (touching the bottom edge) on the first page (after the chapters end) and the following 40 are lost! Is this a known bug? Does anybody know what to do? \enableregime, \setupbodyfont and the amsl module

Hi Hans and all, a user on it.comp.software.tex just noticed a funny interaction between the amsl module and an appropriate choice of fonts and encodings. The following minimal test file shows the problem: \setupbodyfont[ber,pos] \usemodule[nath] \enableregime[il1] \starttext \`e è un'attività \stoptext Notice that accented letters come out like letters with two commas below. Wrapping around footnotes

I'm preparing a paper in two column format, and I'm having issues with footnotes in one column affecting the text in the other column because the text in the other column stops at the same spot as the text in the column with the footnote rather than typsetting down to the bottom of the page. Texutil

Dear Hans, I am trying to convert a couple of EPS pictures into PDF files. Viewing those figures in gostview shows their content on screen as expected. Unfortunately the conversion with texutil results in some of the files in a rotation of 90 degrees. I tried to tweak texutil.pl with adding a line to the $GSCommandLine $GSCommandLine = "-q " . ... "-dAutoRotatePages=/None " . ... I also tried to put there ... "-dPDFSETTINGS=/printer " . ... But the figures remain rotated. - Do you have a clue how to prevent this? If you edit texutil.pl would you then have also look at the code line 2079: Report ( "PdfFile", "$FileName".".pdf" ) ; instead of Report ( "PdfFile", "$SuppliedFileName" ) ; Kind regards Willi

A big problem is that the \MyNote notes seem to be not "brakeable" If such a note is half a page long and all the notes are set at the end of the text it happens quite often that there is half a page empty (because the next note is too long). Do you also have a clue for this? Hello Manny, we don't have a solution for this, we have the same problem. With a doctype-system, which Xalan can't find, Xalan throws an exception. It doesn't validate the XML against the DTD, but it MUST find it. Until now we solved the problem with an empty DTD-file at the place, where the file is searched. If you found a solution or anybody knows one, we would appreciate to get to know it. Regards, Jo

Hi, still searching for a working solution how to deal with my 757 footnotes I tried to avoid the error by using buffers. But again: ! Dimension too large. Is there really no way of emptying that "cache" - and maybe split it in footnote 1-350 and footnote 351-757? german sharp s in Metapost Labels

Hi all, if i use another Font as cmr to typeset labels in MetaPost the german sharp s is typeset with wrong width. The same text direct typeset by tex (pdfetex) without MetaPost looks right. unicode and out-of-box usability

Hi, folks, I've been struggling through, trying to learn Unicode in ConTeXt. It's been instructive, at least. (Hope to make a MyWay about it...) There are a few weird things that made it difficult to learn, and I was wondering if someone could help explain why things are the way they are. In unic-ini: \chardef\utfunihashmode=0 % 1 = enabled Actually, if I understand things correctly, '1' means "disabled", which is what I preferred, having not yet created any unicode vectors. So the internal documentation there seems wrong, and I would argue the default case (0) makes it harder for beginners. To compensate for this I am currently using a workaround (all the lines marked with "*2" instead the one marked with "*1"), basically avoiding the described effect by forcing a page break (found using trial and error such that it works regardless of the length of the table of contents). Can I somehow get rid of these workarounds, without the otherwise empty pages being numbered? Unfortunately, pages 6, 8, 9 still are numbered, although otherwise empty (and the last two are unnecessary anyway), but I guess the problem is the same as for the pages between frontmatter and bodypart. Btw., the orientation of the logos / pictures changes from even to odd pages. The measures of the logos / pictures prohibit a solution just by putting them in the header or footer. Dear ConTeXt folks, The TeX Users Group is sponsoring a user-oriented regional conference on the practical uses of TeX, July 19-22, 2004 in San Francisco. For the sake of publicity and announcements, we were wondering if there is sufficient interest in ConTeXt to list it as a conference topic. The primary topics of the conference will be LaTeX and AMS-LaTeX. However, we do want to include other TeX documentation systems, so that TeX users will be aware of and know how to use other tools. In previous TUG conferences Hans Hagen has held workshops on ConTeXt, which have been well-received. Some preliminary information is available at http://tug.org/practicaltex2004. Hi Contexters, Recently I tried to arrange pages of a document with texexec --arrange jobname In my environment file I setup the following: \setuppapersize[A5,portrait][A4,landscape] \setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided,location={footer}] % Arranging: \setuparranging[2UP] Of course I can comment the line of the arranging and just uncomment it for a single run hereafter to produce a PDF-file with arranged pages. When using texexec --arrange this should happen automatically. I realize, that the system is halted after systems: end file jobname at line 47 textblocks: writing textblocks to jobname.tub It looks like texexec is waiting for an input.... An identical situation occurs when issueing texexec --noarrange jobname Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug in texexec? Kind regards Willi texexec --noarrange

Text Editor for ConTeXt

I am looking for a text editor for use with ConTeXt that is comparable with those available for Latex (e.g. Kile (http://kile.sourceforge.net/) and TeXnicCenter(http://www.texniccenter.org/front_content.php)) The archives refer to ConTEXT, SciTE and Emacs. Only Emacs with the context.el plug-in appears to compare with Latex editors. However, context.el conflicts with my installation of Emacs (which includes the Auctex package) and will not load. m-BibTeX problems

Hi, I have some strange bibTeX problems. a) I try to show DOI references in the publication list, therefore I created the macro \gotoDOI{} and modified \setuppublicationlayout[article]. As long as I don't use \setupinteraction[state=start], the DOI is hyphenated. Using \setupinteraction[state=start], the DOI is no longer hyphenated. Calling \gotoDOI directly, works (both cases), but with interaction enabled the DOI is printed in bold and with wide spacing after the possible line break points ("10. 1103" instead of "10.1103"). See attached files. Run them (with m-bib installed) as: texexec --once --pdf test; bibtex test; texexec --pdf test b) I'd like to see that I can click on the number in [4] and jump to the entry in the publicationlist: It is much more fun to read an article, thesis, etc. when one can click on the reference instead of searching for the reference list (going back is less important; after all, 'Go to previous view' exists). c) Someone should write a texutil plugin which automatically runs bibtex if necessary. I tend to forget this. (I will look into this as soon as I have time, i.e. probably in March.) Tobias

All, I've run across an interesting bug that I haven't seen before. In the attached Metpost file, if I delete the last figure (beginfig(8)...endfig), the file compiles. However, with beginfig(8)...endfig, the file gives this error: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] >> path >> pen ! Not implemented: penoffset(path)of(pen). <to be read again> ; pen_pickup_->...part.penoffset.left.of.currentpen; pen_bot:=ypart.penoffset.r... <to be read again> ; l.499 pickup pencircle scaled 2pt; ? As the code in beginfig(8)...endfig is a simple copy and paste of the code in beginfig(1)...endfig, this is perplexing to say the least. If in beginfig(8)...endfig, I replace the lines %draw pendulum length pickup pencircle scaled 2pt; draw A--E; pickup defaultpen; with: %draw pendulum length draw A--E withpen pencircle scaled 2pt; Now the file will compile. This is strange indeed! Any ideas?

Hello everybody, Over the last days I started to write a "Requirement" document. I started from the example documents provided at the fiee-site, which are a big help. I use this as an exercise to see, what markup is actually needed in the content, to transform from XML documents later on. First some things I already solved, but want to ask, if it was in the right way. 1. I want to mark some words consistently and used the \definesynonyms command for this, although I only use the second form. \definesynonyms[glossar][explanation][\infull] \glossar [ZOPE] {\em Zope} {Web Applikationsserver} Is there a better way to style words consistently? I find it difficult to distinguish between \ZOPE\ and \ZOPE, especially for the possible later translation from XML. 2. In the example there is an indirection for the section definitions. \definehead [Topic] [chapter] \definehead [Nopic] [title] Later on the newly defined headers are styled. But they are used as the only headers throughout the document. So why not style the original ones? 3. I have defined colored header bars in the following ways. \setuphead [subject, Subject,section] [command=\mysec, page=no, continue=no, style={\ss\bs}, color=black] \def\mysec#1#2{\framed[width=\textwidth, corner=round, radius=0.05em, background=color, backgroundcolor=HKS5, framecolor=HKS5]{\startnarrower[1*left,1*right] #2 \hfill #1 \stopnarrower}} They are spanning the complete textwidth. What I now want is to have a smaller textwidth, but the bars should remain broader, as broad as the header and footer lines. Any hints? 4. How to deal with metadata, like author, version, last modified and so. Would you recommend to use buffers for this? This information is probably used on the title page and the footer of each page. Ok, now a real question. I want to style the actual requirements in form of a papercard, whith their actual status at the top. This would be an new definition with 2 or 3 arguments. But the requirements should also be enumerated. How can one build such an environment? Hans, This sample code will give you an idea of my last feature request for mp-tool. Often, I will design my schematic on graph paper, then start to code. But there are times when I like to work interactively, write a little code, test to see what I get, adjust, ... When I am in that mode, a grid is "very" helpful. Once I am through with adjustments, I simply comment out the line " drawgrid(0,0,20,10,1u,1u);". My drawgrid routine was stolen from the schema.mp file and adjusted for a quick fix (I am writing for a deadline again), but it works. But it would be nice if something like this were in mp-tool. Turn on your numbered grid, work interactively, turn it off when done. Very nice. Install again

I installed a fresh TeX installation form the TeXLive installation disk. I did the usual things, like convert Texexec.rme to texexec.ini, move texexec.pl to /usr/TeX/bin/ i386-linux/texexec, run fmtutil and texexex -make --all en nl metafun and the rest. I ran fmtutil --all and texhash. Bottom line programs that compile clean and operate properly under my old installation (still available) don't do so under the new installation. For example the sample program d-en-all will compile without errors but the interaction is kaput and nothing shows up in the TOC. The exact same files in the exact same directory will however work when I boot up my old partition. Hi, One of the problems with the texmf tree is to get the right scripts/documents launched. On linux, runperl/runruby are used for that, on windows there was runperl.exe which is now irun.exe. Those scripts/apps work ok under most circumstances but not all (especially not when one has multiple trees and multiple instances of the tools). So ... a few weeks ago I made a small tool: http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/texmfstart.rb : for those who have ruby in their path http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/texmfstart.exe : for those who don't have ruby installed and are on windows http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/mtexmfstart.pdf : for those who are interested This tool permits things like (on windows): "texmfstart --browser examplap.pdf" but also calls like: "texmfstart texexec.pl optional arguments" and alike. Several search strategies are applied (see manual). The few of you who have seen the integrated context environment (around scite) already may have used this tool indirectly. I didn't yet test this new gimmick on linux but will do that asap. The next thing that will be posted is 'texsync' which will synchronize your local minimal tex and/or context tree (or part of it, or (part) of the documentation) with the current distribution. (i'm playing with that right now).
