starting on an even page

This is undoubtedly a simple-minded question. So, with apologies, let me say that I wish to produce a chapter in doublesided mode that begins on an even (left hand) page, say page 54. What I currently produce is a blank page 54 (with correct header) followed by the chapter itself starting on page 55 and looking exactly it should if page 55 were the first page. In effect, ConTeXt is inserting a blank page so that the first page of the chapter proper is odd. How do I stop it from doing this? (There is no blank page if the first page number is in fact odd.) Any suggestions or even pointers to some manual would be much appreciated. Alan

Help a newbie with the Context/tex.iso setup

Hi Hans, Patrick et al. I really would like to learn about mouseover and other PDF related ConTeXt features (probably JavaScript related). In an older email Hans told Patrick that he'll send him a nondocumented example file - so does this mean that there are no other example files available? Please, if some of you could give me some readable read (as .tex files) examples on how how to work with buttons, mouseovers and other interactive PDF elements like this, I would be very happy! Hi Not necesarly. But I've spotted that in that pdf, the Romanian diacritics were typesetted correct! I was wonderring if you did something special. Hello again! (after quite some time) I've recently downloaded the special-s.pdf and there is an example in Romanian. Now the question: How did you do the \c{t} and the \c{s} there to use the comma and not the cedilla? 6 ways to ask for Times-Roman. Are they the same?

Hi all. Studying the pdftex.map file I found the following 6 TeX fonts that are used for Times-Roman: ptmr8y, ptmr8r, rptmr, rtxptmr, tir and tmrm108r. In the "no download" version of the map file, all these TeX fonts are mapped into Times-Roman. In the "download" the font utmr8a.pfb is embedded for them. Are they the same? Does anyone know how pdfTeX can be instructed not to embed them? Hallo Hans, sorry for bringing back two old topics, but they are still unanswered: 1) Willy Egger firstly pointed on empty page with zero on the bottom-left coner of an additional sheet using arranging command. I have tested with pretty new context (ConTeXt ver: 2004.3.16) and this behevior still survived. Hi all, Not sure if any of you consider this useful, but: I have created a C port of the perl script texutil from the ConTeXt distribution. The Makefile supports two different targets: with and without direct linking to the kpathsea path search library (default is standalone). License: GPL version 2 (for the kpathsea version), or the ConTeXt license as defined in mreadme.pdf (for the standalone version) Index key remapping and perl module plugins are not supported (both features are actually unused in the current distribution of ConTeXt). All other differences from the 'standard' texutil are bugs, and even though I give no warranty whatsoever, I would still like to know about those so that I can fix the source. hello i have a general question to the use of fonts in context. is that true that i always need a *.tfm and *.pfb file of a font to use it in context?? if i generate some *.tfm (from afm files) with "texfont" context complains about not finding the *.pfb files. when I use texfont *.tfm and *.vf are generated. what are the *.vf files good for?? thanks for an answer. greets severin

A bug in location=hanging ?

Hi, Please have a look at the example below. "\setuphanging[distance=0cm]" does not seem to have an effect at all. If I set "margin=-0.0001cm" it is almost zero, but if I set "margin=0cm" it jumps an undefined step to the right. Why can't it be zero? Did I forget a "%" at the end of some line? I've figured out that I'd like to try to typeset to a five-column grid. Most of the stuff should be centered against the third column, while some stuff should be centered to the second and fourth column. This makes for a very boring diploma, but that's beside the point at this stage. I want 1-inch borders throughout, so before \starttext, I have \setuplayout[paperheight=29.97cm,paperwidth=21cm,leftmargin=1cm,rightmargin=1cm,header=1cm,footer=1cm,textwidth=19cm,textheight=27.97cm] (I pretend that marginpars don't exist. I'm sure they'll come back and haunt me). Furthermore, before \starttext, I set up the layers I think I need with \setuplayout[grid=yes,columndistance=12pt,columns=5]\showgrid \definelayer [text] \setupbackgrounds [text] [background=text] (The showgrid is there because I like to see what I'm doing). Then I have, say, \setlayer[text][column=3,line=7,x=0.5\layoutcolumnwidth,location=c]{% Diploma awarded to} now, _is_ this the smartest way to do this? furthermore, I'd like to allow for input into fields from Acrobat. Preferably, I'd like to be able to place it using numerical coordinates (absolute or relative, set to a layer or not). linecorrection and paragraph spacing

Some time ago Hans recommended the use of \startlinecorrection...\stoplinecorrection surrounding a figure. Typically I write a paragraph and then have a double carriagereturn and then a floating figure and then a double carriagereturn. The normal paragraph space does not always appear so I surround the figure by linecorrection and then find that the paragraph spacing is slightly larger than usual. Are there any rules for this. If necessary I will try to produce a minimal example although I tend to notice the problem once a document has become fairly long. TIA -- Nigel

Hi all, Is it possible to place some text in two columns into either the table or figure environments without the columns getting ignored. I have some data which I do not want to put in table form but require it in two columns with either a figure ot table label at the bottom. For example a c b d Table x: foo Will this have to be done manually ?? Also, I'm having some problems with using columns, what is happening is that whenever the columns finish the text afterwards runs off the end of the page. I'm using \startcolumns[n=2, tolerance=verytolerant] Thanks Adam

We (and Apple) would appreciate it very much if some of you would do tests on different printers and submit a report on the survey form posted at <http://latex.yauh.de/survey/survey.php?SURVEY_ID=14> Josh Carter made the original discovery and did tests on the following: ----------- HP Color LaserJet 4600dn - Printing page 1-100ish (my original print job), A4 paper scaled to letter: fuzzy pages from page 37 (physical 41) on. - Page 37 only (scaled): fuzzy. - Page 37 only (A4 cropped to letter): fuzzy. HP LaserJet 4050n: - Page 37 only (scaled): fuzzy. - Page 37 only (cropped): fuzzy. Epson Stylus Photo 2000P (note: NOT a PostScript printer): - Page 37 only (cropped): fuzzy. All were printed from my PowerBook G4/550; 512MB/30GB; MacOS X 10.3.2; latest available drivers for Color LaserJet 4600 and Epson 2000P, built-in system driver for LaserJet 4050. Update problems: TOC

Hello, all ConTeXters! I finally got around to trying TeXLive2003 and the ConTeXt there. The good news is that it installs into Windows2000 like a charm and all the old font woes are now past worries, the fonts worked the first try. After installing TeXLive I downloaded the newest ConTeXt from Pragma's pages and it seems to be a working installation, too. However, I have a problem to which I didn't find a solution in the mailing list archives: The Table of Contents doesn't work and that hangs the whole thing. If I get rid of the command \placecontent, everything works perfectly, but once I try to compile the file(s) with a TOC, this is what I get: myContents : - Table of contents (./pr-03.tuo ! Hello all, I'm still new to ConTeXt, so this might seem trivial to you... As I would like to create circuit diagrams without leaving TeXShop, I downloaded and installed the mpcirc Metapost macro package. I'm having a problem with \startitemize. It syncs up on the following section, but it's kind of unacceptable as you may have figured. I have not tried to find a small example that reproduces this as I figured I'd ask if this has happend anyone else before delving into a debugging session (I really don't have the time necessary), nikolai P.S. My first guess was that the math was messing it up somhow, but it fails for simple A, B, C replacements for the above \item's. Where can I find a comprehensive specification of the TaBlE module? My problem is that I want a paragraph environment in a column, but that doesn't seem to exist/work. In tabulate you can use 'p' in the template, and table doesn't complain when you use it but doesn't obide by it either. A (not so good) solution for presentations by steps

Hi all, Sometime ago a few of us (including me) bothered Hans in order to obtain from him a step by step presentation command. He cooked up very quickly the macros contained in "s-pre-50.tex", and that was enough for most of the things. However when one uses more sophisticated styles, the overlays in "s-pre-50.tex" do not work quite good. I wrote a few macros in plain TeX and used them in ConTeXt in order to have step by step presentations with the styles "s-pre-xx.tex". (For those who know the "Prosper" macro packages for LaTeX, I got actually my inspiration from "prosper"). I admit that someone can write better and more elegant macros using the hidden power of ConTeXt, but at this point I am unable to do this... \doifnextcharelse problem

It seems that I can't get \definecomplexorsimpleempty to work right. The command I define works fine unless the simple version is called, in which case the first character in the body of the command is checked \doifnextcharelse[... which thus fails but in some manner eats it (even though it is output). The problem with the \doifnextcharelse is that the character it checks against is \catcode'd to \@@active, but it won't work when the character has been checked. Is there any way to fix this? I understand if my problem isn't that clear, so I've attached the module. The idea is to be able to write \startbnfgrammar <exp>: <num>. <num>: "0";"1". \stopbnfgrammar and this is then typeset as a table, but currently you're forced to write \startbnfgrammar[] <exp>: <num>. <num>: "0";"1". \stopbnfgrammar or the first < in <exp> gets eaten by \doifnextcharelse and the \def<{... won't be called causing problems down the line when the > is encountered, which expands into a \egroup which stops tex as there is no matching \bgroup. Now, is there any way to get \doifnextcharelse to properly deal with \catcode'd characters (such as my <) that it encounters when looking for other characters (such as the [ for optional arguments to commands)? I'd really like to resolve this, so any comments or tips are appreciated. Second, is there any good reference to programming TeX? Hi all! Is there a possiblity to have itemize calculate the optimal label width itself? I have an itemize that has rather different labels, e.g.: \startitemize \sym{1.} An item \sym{2.} Another item \sym{103 a.} An item with a very broad label \stopitemize In this example the label "103 a." flows into the item text. Hello all, just a short question. I have used \setuplayout[horoffset=-0.4cm] to correct the printing area of my laserprinter. But this is not possible for doublesided documents, made with \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided], because this changes the direction of the offset from page to page. The downside is that my footnote numbers (both in the text and below) are now blue too. I can go two ways with this. One way would be to set the footnote links to toggle between the footnote call in the text and the footnote itself. The other would be to prevent ConTeXt from treating the footnote numbers as links. I have no idea about how to do either and would be grateful for suggestions for either strategy, though my preference would be for the first (assuming that it is possible). As it is now, clicking on the footnote call in the text changes the magnification so that the whole page fits on the screen, which is not all that desirable under the present circumstances. Alan

Gray bars on Windows 98se

I am creating an e-book following closely the example program d-en-all.pdf. The color scheme is taken from the orignal without change. On my Slackware Linux box the reulting PDF file shows correctly, black type on a light gray background. But when I look at it on a Windows 98 SE machine (I have two such) using Acrobat Reader 5.05 each line of text has darker background than the page as a whole, as if each line on the page had been marked with a highlighter. On Linux (also Acrobat Reader 5.05 or thereabouts) no such banding occurs. It displays correctly using Xpdf as well. Hi, If you have acrobat 6 installed, you can try: http://www.pragma-ade.com/itdemos/internal/media/mediashow.pdf This file accesses - a movie - a flash - a smil - a mpeg however, - the smil does not work on a distance (probably bug in acrobat, resources are not picked up) - the smil does not work stand alone on a mac - the shockwave does not work on a mac (which associates the suffix/mime to quicktime) on windows, things seem to work ok in standalone as well as when served on localhost with url's; on macosx, a full screen startup looks rather strange (not centered, funny top bar) you can download http://www.pragma-ade.com/itdemos/internal/media/mediashow.zip to test it locally (8 meg file). If you're on linux or mac, try this on a xp machine. The files has - roll over buttons (not that new, was already present) - navigational layers (also not new, already present as well) - multimedia support The next release will support multimedia (a bit more than shown here). I have a separate demo file for that (still pondering how to distribute it). I'll see if I can write a My Way this week. Beware: multimedia support combined with other features is not always that stable in acrobat (apart from some bugs). Given that you have an xml file describing you media, texexec --use=med-show --pdf thatfile.xml will do the trick (in my version -) This is a first step towards a multimedia server/client based on pdf. So, if an able mac user is willing to write an xslt script for converting those itunes export files into a reslib format ... I am trying to write a macro which places a picture in the margin. I would like the centre of the picture to be aligned vertically with the centre of the paragraph in which I call the macro. The following works in simple cases: \def\hazard#1{% The argument is the text of the paragraph \setbox0=\vbox{#1}% I do this to work out the height of the paragraph \inleft [low] {% \framed% [height=\ht0,% This makes the height of the frame equal to the height of the paragraph top=\vss,% bottom=\vss,% These two lines centre the picture in the frame frame=off]% {\externalfigure [sharp turn sign]}% }% #1}% It goes wrong if you replace #1 with \box0 If I type something like \hazard{…paragraph text…} this produces what I want. But it breaks down with mathematics. \hazard{% \startformula …mathematics… \stopformula } produces the picture aligned with the bottom of the mathematics. A solution to this problem escapes me. boldsymbol workaround

Hi all, I've just found a little workaround for using boldsymbols. It works even with the nath module. It's probably not the best way of doing it, but since it does the trick for me, I guess it might useful to other ConTeXters. XY arrangement

Hi Hans, I should print on a sheet of etiquettes made by Avery. The topspace as the bottomspace is 15 mm the left and right non printable area is 7 mm. On the rest of the printing area there are 21 etiquettes with a horizontal distance of 3mm. There is no vertical gap in the columns of etiquettes. I setup the XY arrangement. The etiquettes look o.k. The problem is, that Context ignores the topspace and backspace as setup in \setuppaper. For your reference I add a minimal example. Could you please have a look why the mentioned parameters are ignored? Two questions about \subject vs \section

Hello all. I have a series of documents which use \section to create a numbered heading and \subject to create an unnumbered one. I would like the unnumbered headings (the \subjects) to do put the titles in the running heads and in the tables of contents, like the \sections do. I have experimented with \setuphead but can't see how this can be done? A related question which might help me answer the first - where would I find the default settings for things like \chapter and \subject, so that I can see how they are originally set up and therefore how to make them behave differently? The tex/context/base/*.tex files don't seem to contain \definehead commands for these, so I assume they must be done in a different way internally? Thanks for any help. Duncan dh(a)capdm.com

unwanted pagebreak

I thought \setupcaptions[align=right] would cause left aligned captions, but they stay centered. \setupcombinations[align=right] works -- even if I think, combination captions should be affected by \setupcaptions also... Unicode garbage in table of contents

Hi there, while replying to a post on comp.text.tex I made the interesting discovery that \setupsection[section-2][conversion=Romannumerals] cannot be replaced by \setupsection[chapter][conversion=Romannumerals] even though chapter is section-2 ... why is it? strange dependency between cbox and whitespace?

Hi all! I came across the following behaviour: cboxes seem to suppress white space in certain conditions. In the following example there is no whitespace output between paragraph no. 2 und 3. Yet, if I change \setupwhitespace to 'none' or if I do not enclose the paragraphs in cboxes then the whitespaces between the paragraphs appear as expected. Does anyone know a workaround for this 'strange' behaviour of cboxes? aligned equation numbers in nath

Hi Giuseppe, I know it's still work in progress, but could you suggest me some workaround in order to number individual aligned equations in nath? Maybe some \label command that would work like this way: \[ \startalign x^2 + y^2 &= a^2 \\ \label[eq:bogus] a^2 &= R^2 \stopalign \] In \in{equation}[eq:bogus], blah blah No matter wether the other aligned equations are numbered or not. All I wish is to be able to refer to a single equation. Or maybe there is a way to set a kind of anchor? \[ x^2 + y^2 \setanchor= a^2 \] \placeformula[eq:bogus] \[ a^2 \getanchor= R^2 \] so that both equal signs be aligned. blank page in doublesided mode

In doublesided mode ConTeXt seems to insert a blank page at the end of a document when there is an odd number of printed pages. I have checked the English documentation and so far I have only found out how to force a page in order to produce an even paged document. I have yet to come across anything that seems to show how to stop ConTeXt from adding a blank page. Any pointers will be very gratefully received. Alan

How to setup german documents?

I have a very basic question which occupies me for more than a week now: How to setup documents for german language properly, such that: 1. the used input encoding is ISO-8859-1, 2. german special character are available, and 3. german hyphenation patterns are used. The setup shown below does not work: TeX is not able to hyphenate "Änderungsabnahme" and the \quotedblbase symbol is broader than its counterpart the \quotedblleft symbol. newbie question about xml

It would be wonderful if I could find an easy way to translate my ConTeXt source-files to html. So I was wondering if going via xml would be a viable method. Unofrtunately, I know next to nothing about xml. I played a bit with Emacs nxml mode and tried to understand "xml in context," but a couple of stupid questions remain: 1) even with specialized tools like onyx or Emacs xml mode, will writing these source files ever be as easy as writing TeX-source? Is it worth the extra effort? 2) Can anybody point me to an example document written in xml that can be processed by ConTeXt? 3) If I understand "xml in context" correctly, one has to specify quite a few of the xml commands in a dtd so ConTeXt understands them. I had a look at x-contml.tex to see what such definitions should look like. So I wonder: if I have to tell ConTeXt about these commands anyway, wouldn't it be easier to simply write a perl script that does these conversions and translates TeX into xml? problems with / bugs in naturals tables?

Hi all! I try to use ConTeXt to set tables specified with the CALS table model. Everything that is needed for this task is provided by the natural tables. Yet, the results are rather unsatisfactory. In particular I encounter the following problems: 1. The table header that is to be repeated after every page break includes a lot of whitespace. This white space is not contained in the provided input. 2. The frames of cells are extended bellow the bottom margin if there is a nr-attribute greater than one and a page break is necessary. In order to illustrate these problems, I attach a ConTeXt file and the produced pdf. Does anyone know about these problems? Is there a workaround? Thanks for your attention, --Stefan

I'm taking a look at nath (via t-nath). Here's the very first thing I tried: In the following code, the first formula typesets as I want, and the second doesn't. Hi all, can anyone tell me how the following unicode characters can be accessed with ConTeXt? “ - left double quotation mark „ - double low 9 quotation mark In LaTeX I used the \grqq- and \glqq-macros. In addition, I have difficulties in accessing the Euro character. The proposed method \usesymbols[euro] and the later use of \euro or \texteuro does not work. I get the message \definedfont=eurose at 14.39996pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. What steps do I have to perform in order to install that font correctly? how to get bottom-vertical-alignment in (natural) table cells?

Hi all! I try to set a simple table that show the different horizontal and vertical alignment capabilities (see below): horizontal: left, middle, right vertical: top(?), lohi, bottom(?) Yet, the bottom alignment does not work. The texts in the third column that should be placed at the bottom appear at the top of their cell. Does anyone know how bottom alignment in table cells can be accomplished? numexpr in etex / bug ?

Hi, A numexpr either ends with a \relax or is delimited by () So, the following works as expected: \number\numexpr(1) test but ... the following gives an error message: \number\numexpr(1) /test so, the expr parser looks beyond the ) which is rather strange; bug or feature? Hi, I know there is \starthanging xxxx \stophanging and \hangafter=1 \hangindent=1em xxxx. Both commands need to be added to each affected paragraph again and again, right? Is there a way to have this hanging first line for a series of paragraphs - with just a kind of \starthangingarea aaaaaa bbbbbb cccccc \stophangingarea In cases like bibliographies and alike this would speed up work a lot!! load order?

Hi. Who's familiar with initialisation file loading order? I define some generic formatting options in cont-loc (because it's loaded by default, it doesn't get overwritten, and I use it on several machines). I successfully use them by adding a command at the start of tex source files. I'd like them to be choose-able for any file from the command line with (I presume) a mode. I've tried this in cont-loc and cont-sys, but it doesn't have an effect. \doifmode {atl} {\LocalSetup[interaction,sansheadings]} Where should I put it? Update Problem

Hi all. I try to update teTeX 2.0.2 to the current context distribution (cont-tmf.zip of 2004-1-13). After updating I can not process my old files. I get the following error message: ! Undefined control sequence. \@@toks ->\everyTEXinputmode Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thank you for your attention, --Stefan These are the steps took to update ConTeXt: 1.I deleted all context subdirectories in the tetex/share/texmf directory. 2. I unpacked the cont-tmf.zip file into that directory. 3. I run texhash. 4. I created the formats by "texexec --make nl en de".

I've finally managed to set up my first project (a project file, an environment file, a product file and two components). It works quite reasonably, but only until I try to introduce a local environment that would only apply to this product (and not the 3-4 others I expect this project to contain at a later date). I do not understand how to make it work. First I tried to make a local environment as a part of my environment file, like this: \startlocalenvironment[gl-01] \setupheadertexts[Start-up instructions][GL-01] \stoplocalenvironment If I understand correctly, I could implement this local environment by adding the command \localenvironment[gl-01] somewhere - but where: in the project file before or after the name of the product in question or in the product file somewhere? I also tried making a separate file gl-01_env.tex which says \startlocalenvironment \setupheadertexts[Start-up instructions][GL-01] \stoplocalenvironment Now it could be implemented by giving the command \localenvironment gl-01_env but again, I'm at loss as to where the command should be given. An additional problem seems to be that my ConTeXt is old enough (if it ain't broke, don't fix it - so updates are pending) to be subject to missing English synonyms; however, the fix suggested in <http://ml-archives.mini.pw.edu.pl/ntg-context/msg06984.html> (using Dutch equivalents for some commands) doesn't seem to work for me, possible because of the problems above; I haven't yet managed to figure out which command goes where. I would be grateful indeed if I got a simple example on how to implement one local environment to one product and another one to another product. Or, if there's another manual for the project structure (not the beginner's manual or the big one, both have the same text without any examples, neither has definitions on the localenvironment commands), just give me a pointer...

My suggestion would be to set up LaTeX documentclass packages for all the documents which you create, then use LyX for editing all of your text source (and rtf2latex to pull in Word .docs from the un-washed masses), w/ a .layout file for LyX which calls your documentclasses, things should, ``just work'' at that point except for the odd special case which will require manual tweaking (can be done as ERT (evil red text --- raw LaTeX code) inserted into the text). There was a very nice presentation at TUG2003 on doing this sort of switch, but the company bought the code and it wasn't released. Can't resist pointing out though that John Warnock swore up and down that for so long as he was in charge at Adobe after their purchase of Frame Corp. Adobe would do FrameMaker (nominally he's not in charge of day-to-day operations these days). Hi all! Does ConTeXt allow to create links with custom actions? I have a working LaTeX / PDF-TeX solution which I am not able to port to ConTeXt.
