Context in Portuguese

Hi ! I've been a Latex user for some time and I'm now trying to use Context to typeset some documents in portuguese using portuguese accentuated characters but I can't seem to get it working. Every time I use an accentuated character it simply doesn't shows up in the document. I'v read the docs but haven't found a solution to the problem. Can someone provide me a simple example on how to do it, or the problem I'm facing has to do with some kind of configuration that has to be done in Context ? I'v been trying to use Context using the tex iso available at pragma's website. Thank you, Miguel Queirós

Using ConTeXt through MikTeX

Hello, friends, I posted this message some days back to the MikTeX mailing list, but would like to repeat it here. I use MikTeX with the text editor TechnicCenter. I generally work with PDFLaTeX. I have been reading about ConTeXt, which among other things enables the use of Metapost from within the package. (I wish to use Metapost as I need to draw lots of diagrams for Euclidean geometry.) It seems that one can configure MikTeX for ConTeXt. Could any user of ConTeXt suggest how to do the configuring? I am not able to act on the tips given. I have located in "MikTeX Options" the option "cont-uk" (in the Formats tab) and have selected it; but am not sure of the next step. I would be grateful for some advice on this matter. Thanks. Footnotes in margin?

Hi, does ConTeXt provide a way to place footnote (not margin notes!) per page - but not below the body text? A suitable place could be the margin. But there is no "\setupfootnotes[location=inmargin]" and somthing like "\inmargin{\footnote{}The footnote's text.}" doesn't flow. Does anybody know a working solution? Thank you, Steffen Wolfrum

Hi, The past week has seen two major updates of the context distribution on the pragma-ade web site. As I have done in the past, I have created a fairly detailed list of the changes between these and the previous (2004.06.30) version. Short summary: Context 2004.8.15 --------------------- uploaded on August 18, 2004. * texexec is now version 4.4, which adds "-engine" support for the upcoming texlive changes, and adds direct support for dvipdfm and dvipdfmx * the 'visual' module is now included in the distro * multitone color support * the LaTex .sty files now are true packages, including a version date (2004/07/30) * various DIN papersizes adjusted and a few new ones added * many many more minor changes Context 2004.7.12 -------------------- uploaded on August 16, 2004. * The low-level marking and page numbering macro names are converted to english. * The are a number of preliminary changes for XSL-FO support * \framed now supports the "orientation" keyword. Page break after a section :-(

I have some text that looks like: \section{Flight Controls Model} \startitemize[1] \item The Flight Controls model.... ... ... \stopitemize ConTeXt has decided to put a page break right after the \section, so my itemized list begins on the next page. I thought \sections were supposed to be setup with infinite penalty between the section title and the first line of the section text itself. I don't want to put a directive in there myself to avoid a page break

Hi, ever so often I read mails by Giuseppe or Idris on Aleph. Now I also saw that there is a context-manual on aleph. Does this mean I can use the examples mentions there under ConTeXt? Running an alephtest.tex file ... \start \textdir TLT\relax \setups[ward] \start \textdir BLB\relax \red \setups[ward] \stop \setups[ward] \stop ... tells me that "\textdir" is an "Undefined control sequence" What is missing? Some problems with framing typed text.

In the document I'm working on, I'd like to put some typed code bits in frames, to get an appearance sort of like the code excerpts on the ConTeXtWiki. However, I've found myself needing to do a couple of rather ugly hacks to get that to work right, and I'm hoping for some suggestions on how to avoid that. Here's what I have so far: \def\typebufferframed[#1]{% \vskip\parskip \framed[background=color, backgroundcolor=gray, frame=on, strut=yes, offset=2mm, width=broad, framecolor=black, align=right]% {\vskip -11mm\typebuffer[#1]\vskip -5mm}} \starttext Plain text before the code. \startbuffer[ex1] This is an example. \stopbuffer \typebufferframed[ex1] Plain text after the code. \stoptext The hacks that I'd like to get rid of: It would be nice not to have to put the code in a buffer before typing it, since in general I only use these once. However, if I put \starttyping and \stoptyping inside a framed command (even if I don't encapsulate it in another function) it breaks, and putting \startframedtext in the before= command and \stopframedtext in the after= command of \setuptyping also doesn't work. The spacing, when I do things the way that I'm doing them, is all wrong. The \vskip\parskip at the top is reasonably ok (although a bit annoying), but I'd really like to figure out how to get rid of the large negative \vskip's inside the frame. Thanks! - Brooks

I have no experience at all of Windows installs, and nothing on that page should be applied to Windows unless you know that it works there too. I don't. Second, the reason I make that recommendation is that in my set up, that is what works best. (Essentially that page is a copy of my own readme file which reminds me how to set up my server again after it crashes...) Replacing the files removes any doubt about versions of files being used, and forces one to review and understand the file structure and changes between versions. I always diff the complete fileset first to see what's changed. Perhaps a Windows_Installation page will be the result of the process you are going through. :-) Duncan

automatic page sizes?

Dear everyone, I do know that this question has been answered here before, but I've not been able to find it in the archive (and my personal copy got lost when the harddrive of my previous laptop went berserk). How do I make ConTeXt emit a pdf file where each page is just as long as necessary for the text on it, up to say 1 meter? Page breaks would usually, but not always, be initiated by some macro or other; footers are not used (yet?). Regards, Christopher Creutzig

Custom Numbering Problem

Two problems: 1) With the following: \setuphead[section][ownnumber=yes] \setupbodyfont[cmr,12pt] \starttext \completecontent \section{1a0101}{Objective} There is no objective at this moment. \stoptext There is no spacing between the text "1a0101" and "Objective" in the table of contents---this looks really ugly. However, what I really want is the ownnumber to apply to \title, not a \section. So if I do this: \setuphead[title][ownnumber=yes] \setupbodyfont[cmr,12pt] \starttext \completecontent \title{1a0101}{Minimum Radius Turn} \section{Objective} There is no objective at this moment. \stoptext Then the number 1a0101 does not appear right next to a title. (I only see "Minimum Radius Turn" as opposed to the expected "1a0101 Minimum Radius Turn". Also my \section{Objective} has numbering. I thought numbering was turned off by default on \title \section \subsection etc.

figure placement and flushbottom

Hello, in general, the suggested method to get LaTeX \flushbottom behaviour, shown on http://contextgarden.net/Flush_bottom, works quite well. howto overlayers on section head

I would like to start to experiment some metafun "decoration around(over)" section head and/or page number. Something similar, just for example but I do not want to copy the style, to the one used to produce the metafun manual. From the (small "scale") drawing primitives to the (large "scale") \setuphead I miss an howto that combine the two (specifically I was thinking at a (non-existent) background keyword in \setup to pass an overlay...but likely I am far off) I don't want to be lazy, maybe it is already written in the manuals, but I still miss a certain kick.... so to say... Disappearing headers

Hello, all-- I am trying to format a book such that the book title appears in the header of each left-hand page, and the chapter title appears in the header of each right-hand page. I think (though I haven't decided for sure) that I want each chapter to start on a right-hand page. It seems that, when chapters are forced to begin on right-hand pages, the book title fails to appear on the first blank page inserted to move the chapter start, and on all subsequent pages. Here are the commands I am using related to headers: \setuphead [title] [align=left,textstyle={\switchtobodyfont[BernhardModern]\bf}] \setuphead [chapter] [page=right,head=nomarking,after=\blank] \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided,location=margin] \setupheader [style=\it] \setupheadertexts [] [chapter] [title] [] % reverse order, as mentioned in my earlier post With all these commands enabled, I get the effect I want: chapters begin on righthand pages, the title and chapter title appear, respectively, in the left and right page headers (adjacent to the page numbers, with the page numbers toward the outside edge of the page). But, as I said, the book title stops appearing as soon as a blank page is inserted to move the chapter start to the right. If I comment out *both* the \setuphead [chapter] command and the \setuppagenumbering command, the title continues to be displayed throughout the text. If I enable either of the two, the title disappears again. By the way, it appears that this \setuppagenumbering command has a side-effect of forcing chapters to begin on the right. Is that really a good idea? It's certainly surprising to me. \CAP command does not work

Blank figure hack: is there a better way?

I'm doing a document which has a large logo in the upper right corner of the page. The logo (which is on a background layer) intrudes into the text area by a small amount, and so it would be nice to have the text wrap around it rather than having to do the wrapping by manual spacers and line-breaks. The "obvious" solution that I came up with for this is to put a blank right-aligned float at the top of each page (it's a presentation where all the page breaks are hand-coded, so that's easy to do), of about the size of the part of the logo that intrudes into the text. I defined a class of floats just for this: \definefloat[logospacer][logospacer] (Using the same name for the singular and plural was a hack to get around the fact that the manual doesn't indicate which of the two the \setupfloat command uses. Which is it?) So far, so good. Except that it's exceptionally hard to _get_ a blank float in ConTeXt, particularly one of a specified size. If I do this (and specify the size in a \setupfloat command): \placelogospacer[right, force]{none}{} I get a nice float exactly the size I want, but with a frame around it and the word "undefined" in the middle. If I put something in the float -- say, a letter, or a non-breaking space: \placelogospacer[right, force]{none}{~} The float suddenly becomes \textwidth wide, which is of course all wrong, but at least I have a blank float that's not undefined. If I put an \hbox in the float, with a fixed width, it stops stretching to fill the pagewidth, but unless I put something that actually makes a mark on the page, it still comes up with "undefined". (The "~" that worked earlier doesn't work if it's in an \hbox.) I tried a number of tricks -- hiding the nothing in a macro, using a zero-height rule, and so forth -- and ConTeXt was sufficiently clever to see through them all. There's also the annoyance that I have to specify the size of the float by the size of the \hbox, rather than in a convenient [width=...,height=...] fashion. Eventually, what I came up with was putting the mark somewhere off the page, with the following command: \placelogospacer[right, force]{none}{\hbox to 1cm{\hskip 5cm x}} This of course gives "overfull \hbox" errors, and is a really ugly hack, but the results are acceptable -- a float of size 1cm by 1 x-height, which doesn't put marks on the physical page. Hi, as far as I know TeX has some internal rules (and penalties) for judging where to hyphenate words or not in order to keep a paragraph not too densed and not too loose. Some rules can be modified by commands like tolerance, spaceskip, emergencystretch et al. Now, I want to have control over the last line. I would like to avoid syllables smaller than (for example) 4 letters being the only element in a paragraphs last line. Like this: xxxx xx xxxxx xxxx xx xxx xxxxxxx xx- xxx. Is there a way to make a kind of global definition for this for the entire document? Thanks for any hints, Steffen

Hi, Later this week i will post an update. Among the things to keep an eye on are: - if you use the new (web2c) beta binaries be aware of the suffixes of formats now all being 'fmt'; conforming to the new tds structure, this should go in sync with a so called $engine subpath under webc, but this wil lnot be supported by tetex (i'm not sure about texlive); this can be rather annoying when you use pdfetex as well as aleph; in that case you may want to try texexec --make --alone --all --engine (i always use --all to get all patterns in the format) - with new binaries you should also be aware of changes in enc and map paths; texfont is already adapted to that and textools can be used to adapt your trees - however, the main reason for writing this mail is that i recently found out that there has been a change in the us hyphenation files; on your system this may be obscured by the fact that sometimes there is an alias file somewhere in the tree mapping old names on new names [fyi: i finally found out that this alias file is also the reason why sometimes fonts like dingbats get messed up]. I have adapted context to look for new and old files; unfortunately important changes like this are not announced and just happen (i wonder how many us-english users are aware of this change); i have been bitten by this (unannounced changes in filenames, and i cross my fingers that the content is the same) too often now; when it happens again, i'll start distributing patterns as in the first versions of context (lang-*.pat/hyp files) - 8 bit in/output: it looks like tex live will not be 8 bit (the last version was 8 bit except chars<32, the previous version was 8 bit) and the next version will be yet another mix; since i want context to be 8 in/8 out the formats will be built with the natural.tcx vector (in a few years, when i can be sure that suers are in sync, i will use the -8bit switch). I will not bore you with teh arguments that are used to let tex not be 8 but by default, but it has to do with unix and terminal output and locales and such. (interestingly this is no real problem for context since the control characters (<32) are mostly used for file io, verbatim, pdf, metapost, javascript, xml etc). MikTeX 2.4 and Fonts

Dear Hans, Silly Questions: I use MikTeX 2.4 and there are some ConTeXt Demos underneath texmf/doc/context/demos. If I try to process the File: "d-en-005.tex" the Statement \setupbodyfont[pos] makes trouble; for PDF-Output. The Fonts in your Documentation looks so nice; I'm looking for a nice Serif Font e.g. Palationo. Unfortunately the documentation about Fonts, I can't put into practice. Converting math from LaTeX to ConTeXt

First, by way of introduction: I've been using LaTeX for about five years now, but am quite new to ConTeXt. I'm a grad student in mechanical engineering, so my primary uses of ConTeXt in the near future are likely to be for my thesis and associated presentations, all of which will likely have lots of complicated equations in them. After looking at what documentation is available for this, I think I have a fair handle on the basics of including math in ConTeXt. However, I do have some questions about things beyond the basics that I use rather frequently, and I haven't been able to find useful answers in the documentation or the list archives. To begin with, I have the following sets of definitions in my standard LaTeX preamble. I know that \newcommand and \renewcommand are LaTeX-specific; what's the appropriate ConTeXt equivalent? Also, do \hat, \vec, and \overline work as I would expect? And is there a direct equivalent to \boldsymbol from the amsmath package? (I need something that will handle both roman and greek letters.) \renewcommand{\vec}[1]{{\boldsymbol{#1}}} \renewcommand{\hatn}{\hat{\vec{n}}} \newcommand{\filter}[1]{\overline{#1}} Also, many of these equations run over multiple lines using the macros from the amsmath package (the "split" environment in particular, but also the "align" environment), and I haven't been able to find much documentation on how to do this in ConTeXt. Does this (or an analogue) exist in ConTeXt? Any suggestions? I'd like to be able to simply cut and paste the equations like this one from my LaTeX documents into my ConTeXt documents with as little editing as possible (so that I can maintain consistency between documents in each format), but anything that produces the same output would be good to know about. How to change the page size for single pages within a document

Hi all, is there a possibility to change the page size of single pages in a document. Reason: I have a document that contains some large tables that do not fit on normal pages. Therefore I would like to output such tables on a page of their own having the neccessary size. (Of course the documents are not ment to be printed. They are to be viewed with Acrobat.) EPS/PDF import and \underbrace in metaplay

I have two questions cencerning metapost/metaplay: 1.) EPS/PDF import How do I make an existing EPS or PDF image a part of some other meta[post/play] graphic? 2.) \underbrace I wrote the following two macros for drawing braces in graphics: \def\underbracedescription#1#2{$\underbrace{\hbox{\vrule width#1 height 0bp}}_{\hbox{\strut #2}}$} \def\rightbracedescription#1#2{$\displaystyle{\left.\vphantom{\hbox{\vrule width0bp height#1 depth#1}}\right\}\hbox{\strut #2}}$} However, the width has to be given manually - it doesn't care about the actual size of the object it has to be applied to. How is it possible to give the command some more flexibility? Hi Patrick, One suggestion for TeXshow-web:-) The commands are all listed in alphabetical order, which is great. But one good help would be an option ordering them by topic. For example, a while back I needed a rotation command, and the manual does not discuss many of the graphics capabilities of ConTeXt. I finally found \rotate combing through the base files (it's not in cont-eni.pdf). It would be very useful to know all such graphics commands in ConTeXt. The organization of the Reference Manual of Lamport's book on LaTeX, or even the end-of-chapter command summaries of cont-eni.pdf, is a good model for this. So if I am looking for a graphics command I can look purely alphabetically as it is now, as well as topically, which is sometimes more useful. A related point; in ConTeXt the bar <|> is an active character, which is not Plain behavior. A list of these little special characters would be useful as well, especially for macro writers, etc. In any case, this list of commands is a great contribution, and a topical organization would make it greater:=) All the best Idris

ConTeXt vs. LaTeX

At the very first moment I saw some manuals I was highly impressed of what ConTeXt was able to do and decided to switch from LaTeX to the new typesetting system. I've put (probably to much) effort to typeset my first presentation and a couple of other documents in ConTeXt after which I realised that it takes me far less time if I continue using LaTeX for some documents (no need to redefine styles for headings, simple tables easier to typeset there, ...). I'm not sure if these are only the problems at the beginning (since I have to look for almost any command I use) and would soon disappear or would the general advice be "don't use ConTeXt if LaTeX suits your needs". What are your opinions about that? I guess I could be missing something. \usemodule[pre-'something'] could be a quick solution for presentations (and I needed quite some time to realise that, but I've made up my own style anyway) - does anything similar exist also for "LaTeX-like" documents? I can write something for myself, but it still doesn't solve the problem if I want to convince someone to start using ConTeXt as a substitute for simple LaTeX documents as long he's unable to achive nice default formatting in one or two lines. "Animation" in slides (\presentationstep, metafun)

I would first like to apologise for this "flooding" of the mailing list with some questions I can't tackle with alone. It's just a mixture of opinions and questions I came accross in the last month while making first steps into ConTeXt and I wrote them all at once. I'll appreciate any suggestion, hint or solution to any of these problems. *** *** *** *** *** After some failed experimets with \presentationstep (I'm still not sure why it doesn't work) I've browsed through the archives a bit, but still didn't find any satisfying and elegant solution for what I need. 1.) line-after-line ... just as what \presentationstep was intended for. Is there an elegant way to achive this "standard PowerPoint trick" of showing the content of the same page stepwise? I've found a presentation of Patrick Gundlach (Keine Angst vor (runden Klammern)), 22.1.02 with \StartItem ... \StopItem, and it more or less solves the problem, but for some non-expert, not reading the archive and without the need of this pretty, fascinating "shadowed" effect, some easier solution should be (and maybe already is) provided. In http://www.sfu.ca/~cdlinkle/jan23.htm there's an example of a nice ans simple usage in Prosper: \fromSlide{[slideNr]}{...text...} makes the portion of text or graphics available only from a certain slide number on. \onlySlide{[slideNr]}{...text...}) makes the portion of text only on a certain slide and it would be nice to be able to achive the same effect in ConTeXt with the same simplicity of the usage. Maybe it is possible already, but I'm looking for suggestions how (this feature should be a part of the standard distribution since it is often needed). 2.) filling-up a table This is a more complicated example and probably "playing with TeX" may be the only solution, but I'll ask anyway. I need to make something similar as, say, multiplication table or a table for dynamic programming calculation of minimum editing distance. There is a n*m table, whose fields have to be filled step-by-step (sometimes the last entries in bold or in red) on consecutive slides. Copy-pasting and correcting the table ten or twenty times makes no sense. I would be grateful on any suggestion about how to solve this problem. 3.) graphics manipulation Sometimes not only the text alone, but also the graphics should change a bit. itdemos/internal/calculat/calculat.pdf (without the first page) can explain exactly what I mean. http://www.theorie.physik.uni-wuppertal.de/~rainer/talks/sample3.pdf is also an example, although I believe I would stil prefer using PowerPoint (I never did until now) if I was forced to make something similar in the way they did (using the same tools, tricks and complexity). I think I would be able to solve this anyhow, but with way too much effort and without some dirty trick. Can please someone provide me some minimalistic example of how to do this in metaplay? It would also be nice to include it in metafun manual or at least put it into wiki. 4.) Page numbering Suppose I have now "my perfect presentation" :) and I want to number the pages or achieve some visual effects such as in any of the following: general/manuals/example.pdf (dots on the bottom of the page) pre-funny (dark red spot in the frame) pre-colorful (bottom line) Introduction `a ConTeXt, Denis Roegel, 29th May 02 How do I make the pages belonging together also possess the same page number? (for example pages 2-9 of collect/present/pre-ntsd.pdf could theoretically be assigned the same page number, 10-14 the second, 15-17 the third, ...) In the above mentioned example in Prosper this kind of page numbering is solved exactly the way I like. *** *** *** *** *** Thanks a lot, Mojca Miklavec

Patrick, Maybe we should move this discussion off the list to not bother others that may not be so interested in it. What I am trying to say (answering your question) is that learning by example is natural to human behaviour and extremely efficient. If you attend any of my classes here in Berkeley you will see examples from begining to the end, no matter what the subject is: math or programming. Even with learned programmers, examples do work well, I took, for example (no pun intended) an MSDN CD for C++ I have here by my side, 80% os the space in the disk is taken by examples, the rest is shared between the software, SDK, and manuals ... You promptly assumed that the guy wanted to copy the examples at hand. I don't think that this is right! He may indeed end up copying it, but you can't assume it. Metapost variable problem

Good afternoon. I am sorry that I bother you with this offtopic but I don't know where else I can ask. I want to prepare a better interface for my metapost macros. I want to use the record-like variables to store "object" information. But I don't know how to copy such records. More precisely, let's suppose I have string a.type; a.type:="ecicsqrt"; string a.name; a.name:="indifference curve number 1"; string a.A; a.A:="1"; string a.B; a.B:="1"; ... And I want to copy it to a record b. But b:=a; doesn't work (now b is equal to some unknown token a). Problem with TeXexec

Good afternoon. I have just installed a new Linux system (SuSE 9.1 with teTeX) and the new ConTeXt (texexec version 4.3) -- in the same way as older one. But it doesn't work. It writes a following error message: ... sh: line1: cont-en: command not found ... This is pdfetex... ... ** ! End of file on the terminal ... why? I do wrong? How can I correct it? I tried to link cont-en to pdfetex, but I've still got the second error message. Moreover, the system tried to make the format file. Many thanks for your help. Michal Kvasnicka

Adding to this thread (I don't mean a reply to Paulo, but rather a reply to what Hans was saying earlier)...The problem with "normal users" cooking up new styles is the lack of artistic abilities in some people (like me). One can, obviously go thru the manual cover the cover, but if one does not have creative thinking, then creating professional looking styles would be hard. That is why, users like me really do not care if our documents look like everybody else's (just as long as they look professional). Its kind of like learning Photoshop and knowing what each toolbar button does....but not knowing how to mix all the available tools create a professional looking graphic. And of course, once we learn the tool, then making small changes here and there to make it look slightly different is no big deal. Salman

Collecting command arguments in a startstop environment

There's a nice little problem that arises in LaTeX, of wanting to write a bit of code like the following, to define an environment that passes the contents of the environment to a command as an argument: \newcommand{\foo}[1]{...} \newenvironment{fooenv}{% \foo\bgroup }{% \egroup } There's even a nice FAQ entry about this. [1] As it turns out, the amsmath package defines a handy \collect@body command that handles collecting the environment body to pass it to a command. Anyhow, I'm finding myself wanting to do this in ConTeXt, with of course replacing \newenvironment with \definestartstop. Is there by any chance a built-in ConTeXt macro that can do this? Giuseppe and ConTeXt list members - Having figured out how to use \grabuntil (see my previous messages to this list), I've realized that it's really an inconvenient solution in some cases, because it's searching for a literal bit of text rather than an end to the appropriate grouping level. (Apparently there isn't a way to do the latter in TeX, given that AMSmath's \collect@body also searches for literal text.) This means that, if I write a "LaTeX compatibility function" that does things like define \end{myenvironment} to expand to \stopmyenvironment, my redefinition will not work on any environments using \grabuntil. This inconvenience happens to show up in t-amsl.tex's "align" and "gather" implementations, which is one place where I really need that compatibility function. However, it turns out that there's a simple way to rewrite the implementation so to avoid needing \grabuntil. Mostly, this works on the fact that the definition of Plain TeX's \eqalign function can be split apart into a before and after part, as follows: \def\starteqalign{\null\,\vcenter\bgroup \openup\jot {\mathsurround=0pt}% \ialign\bgroup \strut\hfil$\displaystyle{##}$&$\displaystyle{{}##}$\hfil \crcr} \def\stopeqalign{\crcr\egroup\egroup\,} (This, aside from the \bgroup's and \egroup's, is copied directly from Appendix B of The TeXbook.) Thus, we could expand the instances of \eqalign in the \startalign and \startgather definitions, shuffle things around appropriately, and obtain the following: \def\startalign{\startformula \let\\\cr \starteqalign} \def\stopalign{\crcr\stopeqalign\stopformula} \def\startgather{\startformula \def\\{\cr&}% \starteqalign&} \def\stopgather{\crcr\stopeqalign\stopformula} This exactly duplicates the existing functionality in the t-amsl.tex package. This is one of the sore points of ConTeXt and of the development effort. People at Pragma are willing to show off but not willing to share code and teach by example... contrary to most opensource projects I have seen. There is another gallery of examples without source for some pdfTeX material at: http://www.tug.org/applications/pdftex/index.html and as you can see there is a large intersection with the some of the familiar developers at Pragma. Maybe it is time for us to start an group to reverse-engineer some of these files and post them into a public archive. Best source of ConTeXt documentation?

In my efforts to learn ConTeXt, I'm continually getting stuck by a lack of having complete documentation. For example, consider the \definestartstop command, which I was recently looking at. * In the cont-enp.pdf manual, it's not mentioned. * In the mp-cp-en.pdf manual, there's an example of it, but it's not really very clear what the difference is between what the "commands=" and "before=" options do. In addition, there's no indication whether these are all the possible options or not, or whether there's any way to define a start/stop pair that takes an argument. * In the source, I can find the definitions, but for that particular one there seems to be very little commentary, and I also suspect I'd need to be rather familiar with the ConTeXt core before I could understand it -- I certainly can't see where the "before=" goes in, for instance. And that's about all I know about, other than doing a Google search on the mailing-list archives, which rarely addresses the general stuff. Is this all due to an actual lack of documentation for ConTeXt itself, or is there something large and important that I'm missing? Thanks, - Brooks

When compiled directly (with \write18 enabled), the minus sign of the first MPgraphic is rendered (by metapost) as "unknown". The very same code in the second example works. When compiling with texexec --automp, the problem does not exist. Still struggling to get a poster with Context. Somehow I am puzzling why almost all my collegue who are accustumed to write with latex+revtex for chem-math-phys journals then turn to powerpoint to produce poster and/or presentation, although "ConTeXt is the layout oriented alternative to the well known LaTeX." and switching tex macro should be easy. I feel there is a lacking in information and/or guide that preclude its use within this comunity. Anyhow my question: Can I have text within a (settable) margin in \setlayerframe? Probably not since margin are defined in \setuplayout and having a page layout atop of another one may not make sense.... PDFTeX sources

1) I want to know the simplest way (and the minimal way) to compile PDFTeX on Windows. From the manual, I see that you have to download web-7.3.tar.gz web2c-7.3.tar.gz pdftex.tar.gz However, this assumes that you have ./configure available (means UNIX or Cygwin). While I have been using Linux for the past two years, I'm afraid, I am too incompetent, dumb, lazy, stupid, and stubborn to learn autoconf and autotools---I want to know exactly what steps are performed while compiling the program and it would be best understood if I had a simple Visual C++ project file to work with. I want to be able to compile pdfTeX from sources using an already available DSP (MS Visual C++ project file)---this means it should somehow use an already existing config.h file. I downloaded the MikTeX sources, but it comes with 65535 other files and directories that I do not need and also mandates the download of Cygwin. 2) Basically, I want to learn a little about the internals of pdfTeX to investigate if I can take the PDF specific C source code out of it and somehow use then in the TeX++ project (which is a reincarnation of CommonTeX, which was an implementation of TeX written in C from scratch by Pat Monardo). I must admit that TeX++ is a piece of cake to install and compile simply because there is no autoconf and autotools to convolute the project. I have been reading TeX, the program these days from cover to cover and comparing the source code to the TeX++ sources and the two are as close as it can get. So I suppose, one could take PDFTeX, strip it out of the web2c files, massage the rest to fit TeX++, and have an easy to compile, and extend version of TeX that produces PDF files directly. ConTeXt output & commercial printing houses

Hello, all-- I am planning to publish a book that is typeset using ConTeXt, and very soon I am going to start contacting printers for estimates. Given that a shop prints from PDF files, does it matter that the PDFs are produced by ConTeXt? I've never worked with regular printers, but I have taken PDF files produced by TeX or ConTeXt several times to Kinko's [for the non-US readers: Kinko's is a shop found all over North America--originally they were just a photocopy shop, but now they offer a wide range of services, including computer rental, design consulting, low-end POD printing ... they do good work within their limits, but their staff are really only knowledgeable about mainstream commercial DTP software--the notion of TeX is totally beyond them]. I have found that they can produce good results, but it seems they have to adjust some settings in their system and make several attempts before the job comes out right. Are problems likely to arise with normal printers? If so, can anyone suggest questions I should ask to help determine whether they can handle my files? Also, is there anything in particular I should do to my files to make sure they are print-ready? Hi Hans, Don't know where to fix this: When I try to run texshow from the command line the following error occurs: Empty compile time value given to use lib at c:/mytex/texmf/scripts/context/perl /texshow.pl line 42 Can't locate cont_mis.pm in @INC (@INC contains: C:/Program Files/Perl/lib C:/P rogram Files/Perl/site/lib .) at c:/mytex/texmf/scripts/context/perl/texshow.pl line 65. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at c:/mytex/texmf/scripts/context/perl/texshow .pl line 65. I wonder why texexec.pl is looking for the cont_mis.pm in the Perl directory, while it resides in the same directory as texexec.pl itself? When starting texshow within Scite it fails to come up. Dear partners in crime, I have come across a situation where, in a left-to-right document, I need to make the footnotes operate right to left: that is, the footnote numeral and rule should be on the right side of the page. Now when using the global direction changes that eomega/Gamma offers, this is trivial for a global right-to-left document (\pagedir TRT and \bodydir TRT are the global settings), but in a globally left-to-right document I have not been able to get this to work locally. To explain: \textdir TRT and \pardir TRT locally switch the text and paragraph directions respectively, but not the footnote markers and rule. This is correct behavior of course. Dear partners in crime, I have come across a situation where, in a left-to-right document, I need to make the footnotes operate right to left: that is, the footnote numeral and rule should be on the right side of the page. Now when using the global direction changes that eomega/Gamma offers, this is trivial for a global right-to-left document (\pagedir TRT and \bodydir TRT are the global settings), but in a globally left-to-right document I have not been able to get this to work locally. To explain: \textdir TRT and \pardir TRT locally switch the text and paragraph directions respectively, but not the footnote markers and rule. This is correct behavior of course. These are two very basic questions, but I couldn't find basic answers. Am quite willing to RTFM, but would be grateful for pointing to specific sections. So here comes: 1) Is it possible to have something in front of the number in numbered itemize-groups? Like LatTeX-style [1] etc. All I could find was the "stopper= " setup, but nothing for "starters." 2) The adobekb typescript is now part of the context macro package, right? (tex/context/base/type-akb.tex). But whenever I have this in my documents: \usetypescript[adobekb][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[pos,12pt] everything works well, my document is typeset in times, but I get this error: bodyfont : unknown variant pos What gives? Shading transparency / missing linear_shade variant

Hi all, experimenting with transparencies, I have obviously come to a limitation: color shading does not work for transparent colors. What I have in mind is a bar filled with a color gradient, starting from a certain (non-transparent) color and ending transparent, i.e. vanishing into the background. However, the transparent color appears just black. Furthermore, the shading variants for linear_shade do not correspond with those listed in the metafun manual, page 180. Variant 2 is missing and behaves like variant 3 should. metaobj and transparent colors with \MPcolor

Hi, I try to achieve transparently filled objects using the metaobj package. However, transparency is ignored completely in the output, I just get a normal white. Disable Metapost rendering?

Hi, I really like ConTeXt's MP processing features, but as soon as I include more than five or six MP graphics in a document, typesetting slows down to a crawl. As far as I know, the PSTricks package has some option to only process a given range of the figures defined in the TeX file and reuse the existing output for the other ones. Is there a similar function in ConTeXt? Some global command like \donotrerender[1-n] would be great, a processing tag for each figure like \startuseMPgraphic{...}[rerender=no] would be perfect. Hi, I got a simple drawing madeup in Metapost, which is then compiled into a pdf file with context. Now that I want to include this graphic in a text I stumble over the following: pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.11a-2.1 (Web2c 7.5.2) ConTeXt ver: 2004.6.30 fmt: 2004.7.21 Error: PDF version 1.5 -- xpdf supports version 1.4 (continuing anyway) Error (0): PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table... Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary Error: Couldn't read xref table subsubject : - De tekst op het Gabarit Error: pdfetex.exe (file ./gabarit.pdf): xpdf: reading PDF image failed ==> Fatal error occurred, the output PDF file is not finished! Problems with left and right

Hello-- I have noticed a couple of cases where ConTeXt macros seem to have confused left and right sides: 1) I want to format some text in two columns, where the left column is right-aligned and the right column is left-aligned. I found I had to do this: \defineparagraphs [ingredient] [n=2, before={\blank[small]},after={\blank[small]}] \setupparagraphs [ingredient] [1] [width=.16\textwidth,align=left,style=bold] 2) In order to format format headers for a book so that the book title appears on the left-hand page and the section title on the right, I had to do this: \setupheadertexts [] [section] [title] [] ... which, as I read the documentation, is in the opposite order to what it should be. Hallo ConTeXters, I am playing with defining my own macro with key=value parameters. Please, consider definition: \def\setupField[#1]#2[#3]{\getparameters[Field!#1!][#3]} \setupField[name][mykey=value,textwidth=2cm] If you let ConTeXt to show the values by \message{ <mykey=\getvalue{Field!name!mykey}> <textwidth=\getvalue{Field!name!textwidth}> <tekstbreedte=\getvalue{Field!name!tekstbreedte}> } you obtain <mykey=value> <textwidth=\Field!name!textwidth > <tekstbreedte=2cm> While 'mykey' is OK, predefined keys (like textwidth, text, style, ...) lead to undefined parameter, that behave like \relax.
