Hello everyone, I am new to ConTeXt (I've been tempted to try it out because of a message by Sebastian Rahtz, posted on TEI-L). I admit that so far I have been able to get through only the main manual, but I am very curious about some things and therefore I would really appreciate it if you could answer my questions: 1. I am interested in authoring in XML and than typesetting in ConTeXt. Are there any preferences towards using some particular markup language for typesetting in ConTeXt? Is e.g. using DocBook more preferable that using TEI--from the point of view of typesetting in ConTeXt, of course. 2. Are there any generic tools available (stylesheets etc.) for typesetting DocBook/TEI or does one have to come up with his own stylesheets? I assume that the latter is necessary if one wants to get exactly the layout he wants, but maybe there are some basic stylesheets that one can use as a base for his own ones? 3. Also, I have a more general question -- for some (short) period of time I have been reading both TEI-L and NTG-CONTEXT, all the issues related to typesetting documents marked up in XML are very confusing. Do you know any good manual/tutorial concerned with these issues that I could use a starting point for my studies on the subject? Thank you in advance- -Radek Moszczynski

Problem with \placefigure before \startcolumns

Hi, I have a problem, when I place a graphic on a page, start columns, and use a \chapter in that column. The following code demonstrates it. I get the space needed for the graphic in the column, but the graphic is already placed above the \startcolumns. Hans, Thanks again for the new code. I tried it in my document with my stationary, but it did not work. When I create a new test document with the code you suggested, all pages have VERY ODD in the upper left corner. Hi, Attached is an xml file that describes the hyphenation pattern files. I'd appreciate checking (some records are incomplete). I'd also like to add (for each language) a couple of tricky hyphenatable words [for testing]. Preferable in utf-8 encoding. XML and context

I've been looking over some articles published on context and XML, nameely http://www.pragma-ade.com/show-mag-9.htm. According to this article, there is a Relax schema for an XML version of context. The namespace is 'http://www.pragma-ade.com/rlg/foxet.rng'. This implies that the Relax schema can only be used if using FO, or? I was wondering if could directly convert to the XML at the namespace above and then process the resulting document with context. This would be easier than using the mapping method. Was this problem solved? If not, the problem may be in not loading a map file; typescripts take care of this. btw, one you see the light, typescripts are not that hard, see examples in wiki, Bill M's font page and Adam L's myways. What has font size to do with encodings? Since I don't want to use a body font size of 12pt in all of my documents, only to be able to use German umlaut characters, any hints to what I'm doing wrong here would be appreciated very much. texfont problem on windows

I'm using the minimal windows installation of ConTeXt, texsync'ed today. The vptovf.exe program as used by the texfont script seems to have a version mismatch. It throws an error saying that it can't find tl80kpse.dll. In fact the version in the minimal tree is tl90kpse.dll. This means that texfont can't install new fonts, since no virtual font files are created. I'm sure I can work around this either by updating my local vptovf.exe or finding the relevant dll on the web somewhere, but it should probably be fixed in the tree if possible. Thanks! Duncan

m-letter stationary

Dear Contexers, I have succeeded in creating letters on my pdf stationary-1. Beautiful. Now I want to print the second and following pages on paper with on a slightly different stationary (stationary-2), as is costumary. Does anyone how to set this up? (The example on the wiki is too complicated for me. I sticked to sample files from Hans Hagen, which makes it possible to use an xml address database.) The present set up for the background is given below. Paper size & page arranging

The command \setuplayout[location=middle,scale=.5] scales the document correctly, but if I use \setuparranging[2*2] for example, the original scaling is broken. What effect exactly does 'scale=...' in \definepapersize have? There must surely exist a very simple and elegant solution to typeset usual A4 pages scaled down to A5, so that two pages are placed on one in lanscape mode, like in: 1. page (A4 landscape with two A4 pages scaled to A5) *---*---* | | | | 1 | 2 | | | | *---*---* 2. page *---*---* | | | | 3 | 4 | | | | *---*---* ... or that "any" page number (n*n or 2n*n in landscape mode, maybe some other number if page proportions are different; and some blank space is left on the borders) is placed on one page, like in (for 6*3): *--*--*--*--*--*--* | 1| 2| 3| 4| 5| 6| *--*--*--*--*--*--* | 7| 8| 9|10|11|12| *--*--*--*--*--*--* |13|14|15|16|17|18| *--*--*--*--*--*--* \setuparranging[...] does the job, but it is only suitable if someone really wants to make a booklet out of it and one has to supply "original" page sizes (for example A6 to be printed as 2*4 on A4). arabtex support

there is a thread a while back about this from R. Elmers. search contextgarden.net for detail. I am using context 2005.31.1 and arabtex 3.11m on MacOSX , bas-ed on gwTeX. I did play around this and found a few interesting things. The result is simply wonderful. \placecontent and \section can appear in arabic! 1) I rename font-arb.tex to m-arabtex.tex and \usemodule[arabtex]. it works. ( as to why it works and was it OK to do it, I cannot explain ) 2) need to add at top of document , ( probably any font definition ) font-arb.tex did mention something about font macro. \usetypescript[postscript] \switchtotypeface[postscript] if you did not, the body text will appear in \em . 3) there is some spurious arabic text, align left. I believe there is bug in \startarabic ... \stoparabic code. my request; can Hans look over font-arb.tex, see if there need some updating/changes. It was written way back in 1999. can font-arb be turn into a module? My reason; I am hoping to write a paper using jawi script, which is supported by arabtex. Can't install ConTeXt

I've just dowloaded the ConTeXt form the website http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-1.htm I've downloaded both the "the main CONTEXT distribution" as well as "the minimal CONTEXT distribution (linux)" Both distributions give me a bunch of directories and scrits, but no instructions on where to put what. With the linux distrubtion, I was given a setuptex script. I ran this, and got nothing. I opend this script and uncommented the following lines and put them at the bottom of the script: # mktexlsr # texexec --make --alone I seemed to get a successful make, but then when I ran texecec I got the following message: This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020211-HO20020731-2.1 (Web2C 7.3.7) kpathsea: Running mktexfmt cont-en.efmt fmtutil: no info for format `cont-en'. Sorry, I can't find the format `cont-en.efmt'; will try `context.efmt'. kpathsea: Running mktexfmt context.efmt fmtutil: no info for format `context'. I can't find the format file `context.efmt'! I got the same exact message when I ran perl texecec.pl with the main CONTEXT distribution. I already have a working distribution of TeX on my system. Hello, could someone help me please with the following little macro? Every line in the table should be different, but all are as the last one. I've tried a lot with commands like \expanded{} or \expandafter etc, but without results... Unconventional page number placement

Hello, all-- Sorry about the repost, but I asked about this several days ago and didn't get any response. If there is a documented way to do what I want, feel free to just give me a hint as to where it is documented; or if there is no way to do it without deep hackery, please just let me know that. Thanks! %% I am creating a layout for electronic books in which all the body text is in a single, fairly narrow column, with minimal space at the top and bottom of each page. I would like to place page numbers in the left margin, aligned with the bottom of the text, and the running heads (if any) also in the left margin, aligned with the top of the text. Is there a way to do this in ConTeXt? I can see that the standard page numbering and header commands don't support this kind of placement. I can come very close to the desired effect with the following: * Place the page numbers in the margin area of the footer, e.g.: \setuppagenumbering [...,location=inleft] * Place the header text in the margin area of the header, e.g.: \setupheadertext [margin] [section] [] * Use negative dimensions to cause the header and footer to overlap the text area, e.g.: \setuplayout [...,headerdistance=-0.35in,footerdistance=-0.5in] As I said, this comes very close to the desired effect, but it seems impossible to correctly align the header text and page numbers with the main text. Also, the header texts are mostly too long to fit on a single line in the margin, and I have not found a way to induce line wrapping. Code to product several versions PDF with different fonts

Which version is best for MSWindows users.?

I am writing some e-books on free software. I am recommending TeX (of course) and Context instead of LaTeX. The vast majority of my readers will be using some flavor of MSWindows. Unfortunately there have been problems in synchronizing Context releases and Miktex releases, in re. hyphenation and fonts in general. I need to recommend a download package for readers who will be newcomers to the world of TeX. Which is the safest pointer? I see Miktex as a possibility but also the stripped versions of the TeX distribution maintained on the Context site. So how would you start an absolute newbie to e.g., Context and pdfetex? Where would you point them for their first download? -- John Culleton

Navigation of pragma-ade.nl site.

I had problems recently navigating the pragma-ade site. I use Slackware Linux but I also have Win 2000. Unfortunately the browsers haven't kept up with pdf navigation of sites, except for Internet Explorer. The others I tested, Konqueror, Opera, Mozilla, Lynx etc. cannot navigate the site because they use external plugins for interpreting pdf code, and the environment for those interpreters is local to my computer and not to pragma-ade.nl. (Lynx of course doesn't have pdf facilities at all.) It is possible to navigate through many Context pdf pages using the forward and back buttons as suggested by Hans but this facility is not universal. Formerly the pages gave a choice between html navigation and pdf navigation. If it is not feasible to restore this dual pattern then perhaps we need to find another solution. Even Windows user often do not want to use IE on line because of security reasons. And of course many present/potential Context users may have Linux or OS X as their base systems. If a change is made in this direction I would be happy to run my various browsers against the Pragma site to make sure everything works as expected. -- John Culleton

Simple itemize format that eludes me

This should be simple, but my brain is currently clogged from reading too many ConTeXt manuals, so please help! I’m trying to make a simple format that I’ve used elsewhere. The first part of each item (a kind of \head) is not indented, but the remaining paragraph(s) of that item are. For example: LONG_UGLY_STRING_LIKE_THIS A few sentences, indented somewhat from the left margin, that relate to the long ugly string above. The indentation allows the reader to scan the ugly strings (which might well be in alphabetical order. Several questions about format generation

Hi all, in the diverse documentation about ConTeXt installation I find the instruction "texexec --make ... --language ..." for generating format files. Several questions arise: 1. What is the consequence of selecting specific languages after the --make option? Have the generated formats the same functionality, i.e. do they differ only in the user interface? In particular, do the different formats have the same hyphenation capabilities? 2. In the "How to install ConTeXt" manual I read that the "nl"-format is needed for some postprocessing features built in texexec. Is this still valid? The TeXLive distribution of 2004 contains only the cont-en.fmt file. 3. Is using the --language xy option equivalent to the using the \mainlanguage[xy] macro? 4. Choosing an encoding - what are the consequences?

Hi all! I am on the burdensome path to understanding font handling in ConText. Now I wonder what the consequences are with choosing certain encodings. For example if I choose "8a" encoding (called "Adobe standard encoding"): 1. There are lots of empty slots in this encoding. What does ConText do if a symbol that is to be typeset is not contained in an encoding? 2. Can I ommit the 8a encoding in map files when PDF documents are generated (because it is the Adobe standard encoding)? 3. Somewhere I read that "texnansi" is a preferred encoding. Why? I want to point people to the d-en-all.pdf example on the pragma-ade.nl site. Unfortunately the navigation of the site is now all pdf based and my browsers don't handle that well. Framed text splitting over pages

Hi, I'd like to split some source code over a couple of pages. I'd like it to have distinct background and rounded frame around. Search on google comes up with an email from Hans answering some fellow wanting the same thing, but the technique used was textbackgrounds which doesn't give me the frame, just the background. Is there any way to tickle framed+splitfloat or any other macro to achieve what I want? Thanks in advance! /S

I googled successfully to find ‘fancyhdr’, but that’s a LaTeX package, so I don’t think it will work in ConTeXt. If it’s not too difficult in ConTeXt, can anyone share the secret? thanks!

Typesetting products and components

Is it possible to determine if texexec is being run on a product or a component and have optional processing similar to different modes? I have a large project comprising quarterly reports and technical notes. Essentially, I have the following structure: project = MyProject |- product = Reports |- component1 = year2005, chapters 1-n |- component1 = year2006, chapters 1-n ... |- product = TechNotes |- component1 = note1, sections 1-n |- component1 = note2, sections 1-n ... ... I would like to be able to typeset a component differently depending on whether it is passed directly to texexec or whether I am processing the complete product. For instance, in each technical note, I would like a title page, table of contents, list of abreviations, and list of references generated if I typeset the component separately. Conversely, when processing the product TechNotes I want a master table of contents, list of abbreviations and list of references generated for the set of components. Is it appropriate to want to do this or have I misunderstood the role of projects, products and components entirely. Cheers, Randall

Hi, In order to get rid of the pattern problems (no consistency in internals, funny names, changing locations, changing names, etc) I decided to provide the option to use context 'specific' pattern files, although ... the pattern files have become quite generic and encoding independent. For those willing to test, i uploaded a new alpha version. In order to use the new method you need to generate the pattern files in a path known to tex. ctxtools --patterns all (or a language code instead) texexec --make --all The pattern files use symbolic names instead of encoding specific characters or tex commands. Because pattern files are often encoding specific, loading a pattern file multiple times could be tricky. The generated files can be loaded for any encoding that provides the named glyphs (i.e. maps onto numbers). [As a joke, i also provide the option to let those pattern files be coded in xml.] In principle, the files can be used in e.g. plain tex as well, for more details see the new (preliminary) manual mpattern.pdf Btw, I still have to do the cyrillic languages. if you think that for your language a multiple encodings should be preloaded ... let me know. Yet, somewhere behind the scenes the ec-encoded font uhvr8t is mapped into the 8r-encoded font uhvr8r. Can someone reveal this deep secret? Page numbers in margin?

Hello, all-- I am creating a layout for electronic books in which all the body text is in a single, fairly narrow column, with minimal space at the top and bottom of each page. I would like to place page numbers in the left margin, aligned with the bottom of the text, and the running heads (if any) also in the left margin, aligned with the top of the text. Is there a way to do this in ConTeXt? I can see that the standard page numbering and header commands don't support this kind of placement. I can come very close to the desired effect with the following: * Place the page numbers in the margin area of the footer, e.g.: \setuppagenumbering [...,location=inleft] * Place the header text in the margin area of the header, e.g.: \setupheadertext [margin] [section] [] * Use negative dimensions to cause the header and footer to overlap the text area, e.g.: \setuplayout [...,headerdistance=-0.35in,footerdistance=-0.5in] As I said, this comes very close to the desired effect, but it seems impossible to align the header text and page numbers with the main text. Also, the header texts are mostly too long to fit on a single line in the margin, and I have not found a way to induce line wrapping. Good evening. Is it possible to acces a inter-file cross-reference via web? I have some documents for my students, all created with ConTeXt. Each chapter in each document has a cross-reference. I can access one document from another via web like this: \goto{here}[URL(http://www.econ.muni.cz/\~qasar/vyuka/barro/barrografy.pdf)] Is it possible to go to some specific chapter? I tried \goto{here}[URL(http://www.econ.muni.cz/\~qasar/vyuka/barro/barrografy.pdf)::chap:somechpater] but it didn't worked. Is it possible to do it somehow? Many thanks for your answers. M.K.

Right aligned caption text.

I would like two different methods of typesetting the captions of figures. Short captions should be aligned in the middle, while longer ones (spanning more than one line) should be aligned to the right (well, ragged right...). What I did to achieve this was to \definefloat[describedfigure][describedfigures][figure] \setupcaption [describedfigure] [align=right] \placedescribedfigure [] [figure:...] {A long description of the figure...} {...} and this works fine (is there a simpler way?). What I would like now is to have the caption of describedfigure to have a small margin, so it doesn't quite fill the width of the described figure. I couldn't find this described in details.pdf (http://www.pragma-ade.com/ is down at the moment so I couldn't check for any other doc's either). Fonts in ConTeXt!

Beste ConTeXt gebruikers, Ik worstel al enige tijd met fonts in ConTeXt, en moet tot de conclusie komen dat ik er niets van begrijp, sorry! Heb ook geprobeerd diverse handleidingen m.b.t. fonts, zoals `Fonts in ConTeXt' door te spitten, maar ben hierin eveneens hopeloos vast gelopen. Afm-, tfm- en mapfiles voor mij ondoorgrondelijk! Ben er nog nooit in geslaagd een ander font te gebruiken dan het standaard font! Ik pas momenteel TeXLive 2003 toe. Is er iemand die op een simpele manier kan aangeven hoe ik dat werkend kan krijgen, zonder direct in jargon te vervallen? Ik krijg het Palatino font zoals bijvoorbeeld beschreven op pag. 91 van MAPS (najaar 2004) domweg niet werkend. Het boekje met al die mooie font voorbeelden is erg fraai, maar mij is het nog nooit gelukt een letter hiervan te produceren! En dit alles moet toch met de standaard TeXLive distributie makkelijk kunnen, zo begrijp ik. Ik ben onder de indruk van de kwaliteit van TeX, en dat is precies de reden waarom ik het gebruik! Maar dat gedoe met fonts maakt mij radeloos! Mijn laatste hoop is gevestigd op dit discussie-medium, om er achter te komen of ik de enige ben die dit probleem niet onder de knie weet te krijgen! Setting up header text

I’m trying to use \setupheadertexts to set up the headers to a specification. Is it possible to insert text between the various ‘chapter/section’ keys? What I want is something like this: | section “Chapter “ chapternumber “-” chapter | | “Chapter “ chapternumber “-” chapter section | where the “|” is a page edge, on a double-sided layout, and the “Chapter”s are literal strings, rather than the keys. I’m not clear from the command description whether this is possible. If not, might a clever macro do it? thanks

PDF bounding box problem?

I’m trying to place a PDF created by Adobe Illustrator 10 using \externalfigure. But it’s coming in with loads of white space around it. Although I’m new to ConTeXt, this reminds me of the old problem where there are different types of ‘box’ specified in the PDF file: one possibly specifying a paper size, others specifying perhaps the extent of the marks described within. I found a font package called bitstream-vera4context on a website and downloaded it. Unfortunately I can’t work out how to install them on my MacOS X system. Anyone care to give me the necessary mystic incantation? thanks

Hi all, Can someone explain how I go about adding the Adobe Utopia Expert fonts so that ConTeXt is aware of them? I have the postscript fonts from Adobe but cannot figure out what to do with them. Is there a document that I've missed somewhere? Poking around in type-enc.tex suggests that much of the hard work has already been done... Active page numbers in contents?

In the index I create, the page numbers are active (marked green as defined in \setupinteraction). In contents entries, only the chapter numbers are active. Can I make the page numbers active in contents? thanks

Is there a bittorrent site for downloading the current version of texlive? Not that I am aware of. If you find one or can set one up, please email tex-live(a)tug.org with the info. For those who may not know -- Hans just asked me :) -- BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer system that lets big files be downloaded in small pieces from many different machines. Always with the fonts on this list... Anyway, I am running some recent beta of tetex and am still having problems getting fonts loaded in ConTeXt. \starttext \showbodyfont[cmr,12pt] \showbodyfont[lbr,12pt] \stoptext seems innocent enough, but produces two identical tables. pdfetex is complaining about an all-base.map: Warning: pdfetex (file all-base.map): cannot open font map file and there is no such file anywhere (and a grep through /usr/share/texmf, /etc/texmf, and /var/lib/texmf turns up nothing). Could someone provide me with a simple rundown on what I should do. I would really like to try typesetting my master's thesis in another font than cmr before I hand it in. Any suggestions are welcome. I'm wondering if this is a bug: I tried to play around with the texmfstart script, but couldn't get it to work. I think the latest cont-tmf.zip installs those files with wrong permissions. List of special characters

I can’t find a definitive list of the special characters that I need to ‘escape’ when used in a ConTeXt document. I’m writing a short script that converts documents, and I need to catch some characters. Some of the TeX ones I tried didn’t work. Couldn’t see it in the manuals. I’ve done the obvious ones - \%, \#, \&, \$ - but wondering about some of the others (eg ! \" # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~ • º). thanks!

Setting up layout - basic questions

Hi there. I’m a newcomer to ConTeXt, and I’m so far really impressed with the power and flexibility I now have access to. I’d be grateful for a few tips - I’ve been reading the documentation over the last few days, and my head’s getting full. Please excuse me if these questions are obvious. I want to make headings in a sans serif font, such as Helvetica, and keep the body text in serif font (such as Times). (I use these font names loosely, I have no idea which fonts I can actually use, since I can’t get XeTeX working yet.) I know that I should do something like this: \setuphead [chapter] [number=yes, style=\ss] \setuphead [section] [number=no, style=\ss] but the sizes of the different levels of heading are lost... So something like 16pt for chapter, 14pt for section, 12 point for subsection? Also, is it generally possible to make all the headings start at the left margin, with everything else (eg paragraphs, lists, etc) indented? Eg: Chapter X Paragraph Section X Paragraph Subsection y Paragraph Thanks for any pointers. I’m more of a FrameMaker user up to now, so I may not yet be thinking the ConTeXt way. :-)

limit the scope of Chinese

Hello, I have been working on a document that mixes a little Chinese and more of the rest English. How do I limit the scope of the Chinese module? For example, I want Chinese to show up in the title, which is done by loading the Chinese module. But the date of the document changed to Chinese too, which I do not want. Can I just use one or two Chines character at some certain place while all the rest of the document remains not affected? Thanks a lot.

Some observations about the URW-Garamond

I played around a bit with the new URW-Garamond that URW donated to the TeX community; as you may have seen on the list, the font files can be downloaded via CTAN at CTAN/fonts/urw/garamond/ If you fetch the entire directory, you'll find 1. the font in .afm, .pfb and .pfm format, 2. support files for LaTeX written by Walter Schmidt, with instructions for installation. After installation, the font worked in LaTeX, but wouldn't work in ConTeXt "out of the box." I didn't spend time to figure out why because creating the necessary files with texfont is a snap. For beginners, a very brief how-to: 1. copy the afm- and pfb-files into a working directory, cd to this directory; 2. run the command for f in ugm*.afm do texfont --fontroot=~/texmf --ve=urw --co=garamond --ma --in (adjusting ~/texmf to wherever you want the font installed) (Of course, you can add other encodings if you wish.) Then I hit a problem. texfont creates map entries in this format: texnansi-raw-ugmm8a GaramondNo8-Med 4 < ugmm8a.pfb texnansi.enc texnansi-raw-ugmmi8a GaramondNo8-MedIta 4 < ugmmi8a.pfb texnansi.enc texnansi-raw-ugmr8a GaramondNo8-Reg 4 < ugmr8a.pfb texnansi.enc texnansi-raw-ugmri8a GaramondNo8-Ita 4 < ugmri8a.pfb texnansi.enc My version of pdfetex (3.141592-1.20b-rc5-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)) refused to read these entries (problems with backward compoatibility?). After I rewrote to the format I found in the map that comes with the font texnansi-raw-ugmr8a GaramondNo8-Reg " TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont " <texnansi.enc <ugmr8a.pfb texnansi-raw-ugmri8a GaramondNo8-Reg " TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont " <texnansi.enc <ugmri8a.pfb texnansi-raw-ugmm8a GaramondNo8-Reg " TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont " <texnansi.enc <ugmm8a.pfb texnansi-raw-ugmmi8a GaramondNo8-Reg " TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont " <texnansi.enc <ugmmi8a.pfb everything was golden. You now have a version of Garamond for those who are too poor or too cheap to buy the real McCoy. The font looks nice to me (I'm not an expert), especially in its italic version. You get regular, italic, semi-bold and semi-bold italics, no expert ligatures, no old-style numerals. How to use and not embed the PdfBase14 fonts?

Hi all! I want to generate PDF documents that use the standard PDF fonts (Helvetica, Times-Roman, and Courier) and not to embed these fonts. With my former installation (TexLive-2003 and a ConText distribution of last autumn) this was possible by using the following lines in the praeambel: \usetypescript[adobekb][texnansi] \usetypescript[postscript][texnansi] \setupbodyfont[postscript,ss,13pt] (In addition, I had to configure pdfTeX by "updmap --setoption pdftexDownloadBase14 false"). After I upgraded to TexLive-2004 this does no longer work! I found that the typescript "adobekb" was replaced by "type-akb". Yet, the encoding "texnansi" seems no longer to be available (Metafont complains that it can not find: texnansi-utmr8a). Changing the encoding to "ec" that still is available yields: \usetypescript[type-akb][ec] \usetypescript[postscript][ec] \setupbodyfont[postscript,ss,13pt] Yet, using these lines in the praeambel results in a document that uses the NimbusSanL-Regu font, that clearly has to be embedded. Does anyone know how the standard PDF fonts can be used while not being embedded? Thanks for your attention, Stefan

hyphenation mess

Hi, When generating new minimal trees, i found out that the us patterns are now again in hyphen.tex and the uk patterns also got a new name. It is a that the naming of pattern files is a mess, and that some pattern files are not in the right spot, and things are not improving. The fact that this is solved with the fuzzy aliasses mechanism in web2c does not help, since this is implementation dependent and makes the texmf tree not sharable. I'll try to catch the new names in the next version, and in the meantime start wondering if it makes sense to add consistently names and structured hyphenation files to the context distribution. Hi, A question about the texsync script: running ruby -S texsync.rb --force --list gives me TeXSync | TeXSync | fetching list of trees from 'www.pragma-ade.com' rsync: failed to connect to www.pragma-ade.com: Connection refused (111) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at /home/lapo/packaging/tmp/rsync-2.6.3/clientserver.c(94) TeXSync | available trees: TeXSync | TeXSync | I've read the texsync manual but I'm not sure what else I have to do with rsync to get a connection to Pragma-ade. I'm running rsync under Cygwin on WinXP. I'd be grateful for any pointers. regards, Matt

Hi Hans & all, Just update to 2005.01.31 for my tetex-2.99.11. I do step by step following minstall.pdf. A simple test with vietnamese utf-8 encoding shows me that a lot of characters were missing: \ahook \abrevehook \acircumflexhook \ocircumflexhook .... Displayed math--vertical space

Hello, I started to typeset real math in ConTeXt :-) and the following issue occurred in vertical positioning. I know about start/stopformula, nevertheless I suppose that good old $$ should work, too. \starttext A short line followed by a formula $$\bigcup_{1\le n}$$ a text follows in the same paragraph. The big cup is too close to the text. If a displayed formula has enough text above $$\bigcup_{1\le n}$$ the problem does not appear at all. The vertical space around the formula is very nice here. Russia (cyrillic letters)

Hello everybody. I am looking for a way of writing some home exercises in my Russian course in ConTeXt. However, so far I have not succeed with it. Should it work out of the box without installing any new fonts (I am having the fonts from a full install of TeXLive2003 now)? I have looked a bit in the source files for context, but with no luck. I guess there are different ways to achieve this, however, since I also want some swedish text in the same documents, the best would probably be if one of the following options worked: 1) Typing everything in utf8, and get the different languages automatically when compiling. 2) Typing everything with western letters, having some kind of \startrussia Boris \stoprussia and get Boris typeset with Cyrillic letters. Using capsule versoion of TeX from Pragma.

To help solve some other problems I disabled the path to my existing TeXLive distro, downloaded the minimal Linux-tex from Pragma, and unzipped it in /usr/local. Following TeXLive conventions I established a path to /usr/local/tex/texmf-linux/bin in /etc/profile and rebooted. The executables at the end of that path were not executable so I made them executable. (chmod 777 *) I also made the setuptex script in /usr/local/tex executable. Per the instructions in setuptex I ran the following: ./setuptex . #note period mktexlsr texexec --make --alone ----and got the following error message /usr/bin/env: ruby: No such file or directory at this point I thought I had best stop stumbling around and ask for help. Help: Context update problem

Hello folks, I ran into this strange problem today. First, I was trying to use Chinese in Context. After I generated those font files, it occurred to me that I might want to run: texexec --make. However, I got the following error message: C:\localtexmf\tex\context\base\font-uni.tex loading: context font macros / UNICODE Support system (E-TEX): [line 423] \protected ! Undefined control sequence. Naturally, I thought it might help by updating context again. But no luck. Still run into the same problem. The font-uni.tex file is untouched whatsoever. runaway argument context(mswintex)

Hi I have downloaded the minimal mswin distribution of context and set it up. I get a runaway argument once \tex\texmf-local/tex/context/base/spec-fdf.tex has been loaded, see below. Is this normal? Previously I had been trying to set up the current version of MiKTeX to work with context, this since the end of November. I had it working before but it ran out of capacity when imposing an 11000 word document -- not very impressive. Trying to improve things just broke it. I used MiKTeX because WinEdt answered my needs, however if I can get the pragma-ade minimal tex distribution working correctly is it possible to integrate WinEdt. pdfeTeX crashes

I have MikTeX still installed and I downloaded context/install/mswincontext.zip (6.12.04) as well (I compile ConTeXt sources with "F7" within scite). The latter started to behave strange just "in the middle of the black". I have a document with 30 sites and about 3MB (some high resolution images) which worked just fine until some point. After 10 minutes pdfeTeX started crashing (and asking if the problem should be reported to Microsoft). If I compile the same document under MikTeX, it works just fine (except that I can't use \setupbodyfont[phv,ss,14.4pt] command). If I compile the document in some other directory (with no images) it works as well. Even more strange: after removing font definitions (both \setupbodyfont[phv,ss,14.4pt] and \usetypescript[adobekb][texnansi] \usetypescript[times][texnansi] \setupbodyfont[times,ss] cause problems) I get some strange error reports (see below), which I have to skip with some unusual combinations of Ctrl-C and quit, but the file compiles without a crash. The problem was most probably caused by PNG images, exported from MS PowerPoint slides, an example is on http://pub.mojca.org/mailinglists/context/alpha.png. They look just fine in any viewer, but as soon as I remove them, everything works perfect again. It looks like a very strange bug. Any ideas? Setting up a sombined list ...

Hi, I am trying to setup a special TOC which should show the version instead of a pagenumber. My approach was to setup newheads with \definehead[][] and defining a new combined list. The struggle is that I can't manage to get the list entries numbered and the lower level listentries are not indented as intended. Could some one give me a clue where I am missing the proper options. Duplex question ...

All, I used the example shown in section 3.5 of the ConTeXt manual to enable duplex printing. I would like to shift the page as demonstrated in the first right/left pages in Figure 3.9. The following, however, does not work, as the right and left pages both remain in the top left corner. I'm using the MiKTeX distribution and WinEdt (TeXExec 5.2.3). Any info is appreciated ...
