Turning off background(s)

I wanted the title page to have a yellow background so I used: \setupbackgrounds[page][state=start,background=color,backgroundcolor=yellow] before \starttext. After that one page I wanted to go back to no background, but I am having trouble turning it off. Here is some of my code: --------------------------------- \setupbackgrounds[page][state=start,background=color,backgroundcolor=yellow] \starttext \startfrontmatter \startstandardmakeup ...(title page stuff) \stopstandardmakeup \setupbackgrounds[page][state=stop] ------------------------ I get one white page and then everything goes back to yellow again. (NB it doesn't work as an option to \setupTABLE, only on the actual \bTABLE.) Then, assuming you don't need splitting over pages, you can set your TABLE inside a vbox to define its width. (If you do need splitting, try putting the TABLE into a textbackground - with no background color set unless you want it - and set the width and/or margins of that?) Hope that helps. Duncan

Not sure I fully understand but here are some comments: For A) If there is a global issue (like oldstyle) that covers all font variations, then your Var[#1] idea sounds nice. One could even do that with small caps for professional fonts but those are so ubiquitous that an exception would be in order for them (so small caps should always have a switch); (I think that \Var[up] (for upright figures) is more intuituve that \Var[ns]), at least in English:-))) B) Again, for a comprehensive framework we should keep semibold (and perhaps add light), for a total of 6(7)+symbols/ornaments; C) If an option like condensed is global over all style variants, then it should go in \Var[#1]. Less common weights etc. can mostly be defined in terms of the standard 16 in \definebodyfont, then used as \Var. Of course the user can still define his/her own, but the idea is to make the most convenient reasonable framework to cover the most-often encountered situations. I think that the above 16 strikes a reasonable balance between the mundane and the esoteric. Sorry for the verbosity. Dear fellow knights, Given predefined switches like \tf and \bf, one inherits the size characteristics of the one already declared. But for user-defined switches this does not work. The following minimal files (typescript and test) is a bit long, but it accurately illustrates the problem and uses the default fonts. My user-defined switch works, but does not inherit from, e.g., \tfc. But \bf does inherit. What am I missing? How to insert a full page pdf.

I need to insert some example pages from one document into another. Both are 8.5 x 11. I have read the old posts about \startTEXpage etc. and looked at the source code. But I still have a few questions: 1. Can I select e.g., just page 2 from the external document to insert in my document? How? 2. Does Context automatically bump its page counter to compensate for the inserted page or pages, or do I have to adjust it after each such insertion? For now next 10 families are included: Lido, Aichel, Dynamo RE, Biblon, Libcziowes, Preissig (text+antikva), Preissig1918, Solpera, Serapion, Tyfa (text). Lido is free for non-commertioal use, so you can play with. Since now OpenType and TrueType versions of Lido are available from www.stormtype.com but unfortunately no Type1 version, I included Type1 to this distrib (see its licence). About a week ago I came across a very nice and interesting document in ConTeXt, and now for the life of me I can't fine it and want to. I believe the author is someone on this mailing list. The example was a book on astronomy or physics. The author described himself as a serious book maker. The actual book itself was set with very narrow pages with scholarly notes. Strange behaviour of width parameter in \setuplayout (Was: Floating table caption extends textwidth)

Hi! I have problems creating a "multi-line" caption for a floating table. If the caption is too long it will extend the defined text width. The following example shows this problem. I was able to find out, that this problem only appears if the variables "width" in the "setuplayout" command was used to define the textwidth. If you comment the line containing the "width" parameter (see comment in example) the caption will not extend the table. Dear gang, The [ownnumber=yes] option overflows ConTeXt's memory, and I have not found an adjustment to texmf.cnf to fix it (mswincontext 3-16, 2005). I increased the param and stack sizes by an entire order of magnitude. Other options such as [ownnumber=no] work fine. This bug is not benign:-) Please advise... I know someone out there has the answer to this. If I run texexec through a shell, even with the full path to texexec, I get an error, "/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/texexec: line 1: sed: command not found `.pl' not found." Running Google with the error shows that it is quit common, but I could not find a good fix. I guess kpsewhich gets lost in the shell because the shell needs full paths the whole way through the command. Has anyone written a shell to get texexec --pdf ? Thanks Robert

Dear list members, After months of trying to figure out what TeX, ConTeXt etc is and how to install everything needed I finally produced my first document. I was thrilled when I saw real pdf pages with footnotes and all! However, I noticed the following problem (no doubt the first of many to come): justification on the right is far from perfect - there are lines sticking out. After going through the manual, I decided that "\setuptolerance[horizontal,verystrict]" in the setup area should do the trick, but it didn't. Any suggestions? (I set up ConTeXt on two Macs, once with teTeX and once with TeXLive, and on a Mac running Mandrakelinux and teTeX - the result was the same (same lines sticking out) on all of them). I am currently writing a textbook and I am looking forward to using ConTeXt. PD Dr.med. Hi, formatting synonyms with \setupsynonyms does not work when these are part of e.g. section headers. Example: \abbreviation{XYZ}{whatever} \setupabbreviations[textstyle=bold,synonymstyle=slanted] \starttext This should be bold/slanted: \XYZ/\infull{XYZ}. Hi, I'd like to have a table with all available commands (like \d{..} for macron) that support diacritic signs needed for western transliteration of Sanskrit. Especially the dot above an n or m: In an old TUGboat article (Volume 20 (1999), No. 2) that I found by Google I read that the dot above an n should be "n (Vulthius). But here it stays the " (like the German Umlaut). Anybody knows more? Steffen

Dear posse, 1. With footnotes, is there yet a way to define the starting numeral-mark? Say, I want my first footnote incremented so that the first notemark is , not `1' then `2', but `1234' then `1235', etc. 2. I tried a workaround: ======================= \defineconversion[set1234][1234] \setupfootnotes [conversion=set 1234] ======================= but a spurious numeral `1' gets typeset alongside the notemark. What am I missing? Finally, the ConTeXt footnote mechanism does not (afaik) take into account superior numerals. We need a setup option, e.g. ======================= \setupfootnotes [numeral=superior]%inferior, normal, with % normal as default ======================= to cut off the mechanism for automatically raising and reducing the size of the numeral (\high I presume). Yes, there is the empty (text)command=<empty> trick, but to use superior numerals all this should not be necessary. Has anyone succeeded in getting dvips working for Latin Modern? If I install lmr to psfonts.map (with updmap) ======================= ec-lmr12 LMRoman12-Regular <ec-lm.enc <lmr12.pfb %etc. ======================= and do =========test-lmr========= % output=dvi interface=en \starttext This is a test of dvips and Latin Modern. 1234 \stoptext ======================= dvips does not complain: ======================= This is dvips(k) 5.94b Copyright 2004 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com) ' TeX output 2005.04.16:1112' -> test-lmr.ps <texc.pro><ec-lm.enc><texps.pro>. <lmr12.pfb>[1] ======================= but ghostview does not display anything. On the other hand, dvips seems to work with fonts (like urw Garamond) that contain only 256 characters. Now e.g. lmr12.pfb contains more (which is why we can get e.g. old style numerals without virtual fonts there), but it seems to be at the cost of dvips (based on my experiments and investigations). (Thank goodness dvipdfmx still works!) Is dvips obsolete as far as ConTeXt is concerned? Possible bug in verbatim

Dear cartel, There is an apparent bug in the verbatim mechanism. In the following example, the `A' is typed but the curly brackets are not typed after \head. \type works as expected in the other two instances. I tried \relax (and a couple of other hacks) but that does not help. Please advise. I want to create cross references and just wanted to make sure I am doing it correctly: see \ref[r][mark1] \par \page \reference[mark1]{} foo \par Since my original file will be in XML, I don't need any of ConTeXt's other more advanced features. Incidental report: ConTeXt i-Package update

The ConTeXT updater has changed (automatically) to include the latest ConTeXT beta (Apr 14). This is a completely automatic update, as soon as a new ConTeXt (stable or beta) is released, the i-Package will be updated automatically and uploaded to all reporsitories. Unless I build in reporting to these lists in my automatic update procedures in the future, these ConTeXt updates will not be reported to the list. G

confused on font size

The main manual on ConTeXt give a number of different ways to change font sizes (if I understand it correctly): 1. {\switchtobodyfont[18pt] text} 2. {\tfx font size ??} 3. {\xii some font} What are the advantages of each? Hello (Taco?), I'd like to get the list in the bibliography sorted by author. \setuppublications [alternative=apa, sorttype=bbl, criterium=all, ] \setupbibtex [database=umbruchlit, sorttype=author] does not do what I'd like. It lists the entries in the order of \cite. And how do I get a complete list of publication? The criterium = all should do what I need, but it doesn't. I used RedHat five years ago but quickly got fed up having to chase down dependencies and got Debian. Only trouble I have had since then was when I started using recent ConTeXts and couldn't go with the default tetex, but texlive is easy enough to install. I started using gentoo about a year ago on another system and found it largely excellent but being a source distribution it trades small performance gains for sometimes *very* long install (or rather build) times. Also, there were some package/version inconsistencies causing install failures, but these were resolved within a few weeks. I have used modem and adsl with debian, and adsl with gentoo without problem. ReiserFS on both for a long time. Sorry for going off topic, but since it is a concern ... Using a linux distribution with an intelligent package/dependencies handling system such as Gentoo or Debian would end your updating woes for all time. In debian testing apt-get install inkscape downloads and installs inkscape 0.41 and updates all dependencies automatically and in Gentoo ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -ua inkscape downloads the source of inkscape 0.41 and all required dependencies and compiles them (taking a lot of time of course). Without going to the testing distribution ("~x86") you get 0.37 Comparing the two, the debian testing distribution has never been less than stable while gentoo testing is updated faster, but has given me trouble at some points. Defining references points

Try running \setupcolors[state=start] \definetype[JS][option=JS] \starttext \JS{function}\par \JS{function }\par \JS{ function}\par \JS{ function } \stoptext The first paragraph will only be the first character, f, the reason is made clear from the following two paragraphs. In the second paragraph, function comes out, but it isn't highlighted as a keyword, as the initial f has been consumed and thus the "unction" part doesn't match any keywords. I guess this is due to the type-handling checking for double characters, like in \type<< ... >>? In the third paragraph, only the initial space is output. The rest will never be output, as \PLsequence never gets a chance to be printed. Only in the fourth paragraph is "function" output correctly, although it is now surrounded by two spaces. I'm looking over the table overview at the wiki garden: http://contextgarden.net/Tables_Overview It states that: "ConTeXt has a whole bunch of possibilities to typeset tables. Not each provides everything you may need, and the older ones are deprecated." Yet on looking at all of the different types of tables, I can't exactly see which ones are deprecated. Are any deprecated? I also see that there are three different types of tables for spanning across pages ("\starttablehead", "\bTABLE", and "\startlinetable"). Do each of these have strengths and weaknesses? Perhaps I could make a table for each type of tables, if someone could guide me: name tabulate TaBlE etable ETC =================================== Use short table Notes does not have vertical lines ETC. The sources and a win32 package can be downloaded immediately from http://sarovar.org/projects/metapost/ The source package should compile normally on all systems that are capable of compiling a modern web2c-based TeX distribution. The win32 package is intended for fptex or a similar web2c-based installation, and has been tested only with TeXLive 2003. The executables will *not* work for miktex, sorry. After beta testing, this version will hopefully become the next official release of MetaPost, at the end of April 2005. That is roughly two weeks from today, so test reports are very welcome. Of course, we welcome any comments (either good or bad) that you may have. Simply replying to this message is fine, but see the bottom of this message for a more formal way to report bugs and feature requests. For those of you who have noted the large gap between 0.641 and 0.9: We have deliberately chosen to step over some minor version numbers, such that the first major release by the current team (this release is planned for the autumn of 2005) can become version 1.0 without causing additional confusion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What is new in version 0.9: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. There is a new internal quantity called mpversion that reports the current metapost version, and the version information is also written to the PostScript file. 2. The PostScript output could accidentally contain 8-bit characters within PostScript strings in previous versions because a test was shared between terminal printing and PostScript printing. 5. A bug has been found in the assignment of serial numbers to independant variables in metafont 2.71828. This bug affected MP as well, and the same patch has been applied. 6. The turningnumber was sometimes wrong in unexpected ways. The new implementation is still sometimes wrong (when there are strange path segments involved), but in a much more predictable way: the new code always draws straight lines between the actual points, and calculates the turningnumber based on that path instead of the actual path. The effect is that cusps and loops within segments are now completely ignored. A more thorough fix of turningnumber is planned for the next release. 7. There was an 'off by one' error in dvitomp wrt. the interpretation of virtual fonts. 8. mpto uses a new TeX macro for the generation of labels, making it more robust wrt. strange user code within the actual label text. 9. A missing colon in boxes.mp has been added 10. A missing save in mfplain.mp has been added 11. So what Hans meant was that there is no need for a virtual font to remap lmr itself, not that you could actually map the numerals of lmr to cmmibi without a virtual font. The OldStyle to MathItalic mappings are apparently useful for local switches like \os, but not for global setups. Oh well, I certainly learned a lot about fonts and ConTeXt this past day-and-a-half, so I guess it was not a total waste of time. Now I guess I have to make some virtual fonts (sigh), so it's now on to Thomas' how-to. Hello, there's a very comical behavior of \type{sometextfollowedby_underscore} inside \bTABLE and \eTABLE. For example: \starttext \bTABLE \bTR\bTD \type{a_b} \eTD\eTR \eTABLE \stoptext \type{_} or \type{_b} work OK, \type{a_b} outside the table works OK as well. --- I tried to find \def\type in ConTeXt source, but I couldn't and I'm also not advanced enough to interpret the error message below. Any ideas? (I would use the shorter form, \_, but the results are not quite the same. I solved my problem temporary by using \type{a}\type{_b} with quite some (unnecessary ?) Why do the left and right margin areas bleed off the page? 2. Why are the margins offset a little from the main text block? These offsets are defined as leftmargindistance and rightmargindistance. Hello, I fear I cannot figure out what is the meaning of the `symbol' parameter of \setuplist. From all the documentation or mailing list archives, the only use I can find is "symbol=1". Is there a way to use it to draw bullets, say, before each list item, like those in the itemize environment? If not, what would be the best way of achieving this? With \placelist[command=...] maybe? Another font problem

I just ran into a smallish yet annoying font problem. After getting the Adobe Type Classics for Learning CD, I prepared a couple of fonts for work with ConTeXt. I was mostly successful. I wanted to have a Garamond with oldstyle figures as default, so I used a custom encoding vector; the only difference to texnansi was zerooldstyle etc instead of zero etc. This works well, but: in German, (mainlanguage[de]), I can't get the baseline double quotes to work. In the "normal" Garamond, "` in the source produces the desired result. In the oldstyle Garamond, I don't get the ligature (character 132 in texnansi), but instead what appears to be two commas juxtapposed. I assume this is some fallback defined somewhere. So the question is: what feature defines this ligature? It is language-specific and works only wihtin German text. And, more importantly: why doesn't this work with my modified texnansi-variant? Font encoding: \uppercased

Greetings all, Taco mentioned the command \uppercased{to get all uppercase letters}, and it works just fine…until I try to use my self-installed fonts. The quirks come up with diacritics, and this leads me to believe that there is an [encoding] or [regime] issue here, as I had similar issues earlier with the font in general. For example, with \uppercased{Krübel} I receive: KRüBEL. Do I need to "make a statement of my intent" in a typescript file or somewhere else to resolve this? Kind regards, David

The table repeated its headers like it should have, but it did not break across a page; it stuck the table on one page. good-looking tables in context

Hi all, I have to present a lot of numerical data in tables. However, I don't know how to achieve aesthetically pleasing results in context. (Ex)-Latex users may know the booktabs package which is a great help in this respect. I would like to achieve the same in context now. I have attached a small example file (source and pdf). Let me draw your attention to the most important points: - There are rules of different thickness for top, bottom, and middle rules. - The spacing between rows before / after / around the rules is nicely adjusted automatically. - Rules not spanning all columns, like the one in the header, can be trimmed at the left and the right so that they do not extend entirely to the start/end oft the first/last column. I think all three features are essential for convenient typesetting of tables with acceptable output. How can I produce this in context? I am aware of the different table mechanisms. As far as I have seen in the available documentation, none of them is currently suited for what I want. Or am I wrong? I hope so, and I am grateful for your hints and comments. Regards, Eckhart

[To all the font experts out there: I really need your help!! I have spent at least 12 hours (!) trying to make this work but to no avail.] Dear gang, I have two fonts (actually, lots more but let's keep it simple), one normal and one expert. I did the following: 1. installed the regular font with texnansi encoding. It works fine. It uses, say, texnansi-myfont.map, texnansi-lm.enc with lines like ==================================================== texnansi-raw-myfont MyFont 4 <texnansi-lm.enc <myfont.pfb ==================================================== 2. also installed the expert font with a private encoding. Basically the same as texnansi where they share characters in common. It uses, say, myfontx.map, myencoding.enc with lines like ==================================================== myencoding-raw-myfontx MyFontX 4 < myfont.pfb myencoding.enc ==================================================== 3. With a view to getting characters from my expert font, I carefully studied as best as I could the implementation of old style figures in lmr, which involves mappings to cmmi10. Ok, I think I have come closer to understanding the \definestyle problem. The problem (bug?) is in \definetypeface. struggle for booktabs

Hi again, since I often need row and column spanning, I have tried to use natural tables to produce good looking tables (booktabs-like, as discussed in the recent thread). I think it will be possible to achieve what I want, but I have some open points. For those interested, I have attached a file showing what I have devised to get the job done. The code is not very elegant, and the parameters controlling spacing and rule thickness are just for testing. But the main idea becomes clear: I use dummy rows with a height determined by rule thickness and vertical separation. The rules are drawn by metapost. Any comments and suggestions are very welcome. Now, my questions/remarks: - How to control spacing between table rows and columns? I can't simply set the offset, since I must be able to set vertical and horizontal spacing independently. - To have each cell entry centered horizontally and vertically, I have to say \setupTABLE[row][each][align={middle,lohi}]. I think it should also be possible to do this via \setupTABLE[align={middle,lohi}] which currently has no effect. - I think I will come to the point where I want to define macros of my own wich can take a key=value list of arguments with the ability to set defaults using a setup command. Can someone give me a pointer where to look in order to learn how this is done? Thanks for your help and comments, Eckhart

Left + right justification at once.

Hi all, Am using \vbox{\hsize8cm text} to typeset my document with blocks of text. This makes a left and right justification of the text, but most of the time it does work alright and i get a ragged right text. What do i have to do in order to avoid this and get my text justified at both sides ? Thanks for any help. Dirar
