multi-paged table with "continued"

I need to create a multipage table that has the head on the top of each page. For the first page, the head should read "Table Appendix B.1: Stores in Country". For subsequent pages, I need to add the word continued: "Table Appendix B.1 (continued): Stores in Country" I notice that when I create tables with the standard Table module, it makes captions such as table1a title table1b title Instead of 1a and 1b, I need the word "continued." Is there a way to do this with Table, or should I use TABLE and try to set up something with \bTABLEnext? Hi all, I hope not to be posing a silly question. I am trying something like: usemodule[mathml] \starttext \def\open {<} \def\close {>} \startbuffer \open math display="block"\close \open apply\close \open sin/\close \open apply\close \open plus/\close \open cn\close 2 \open /cn\close \open ci\close a \open /ci\close \open /apply\close \open /apply\close \open /math\close \stopbuffer \processXMLbuffer \stoptext But this does not pass to \processXMLbuffer the result of substituting commands \open and \close... how could this be achieved...? I know that I could have used myself the < and >'s instead of the ugly open and close but that is not my requirement. Hi, I noticed the next strange behaviour. Let us create very simple file test.tex: ------------------ \font\bf=cmbx12 Normal text. \bf Bold text. \end ------------------ Now include this file by plain pdftex: ------------------ \pdfximage{test.pdf} \pdfrefximage\pdflastximage \end ------------------ Everything is correct. No let us try to insert the file by context: ------------------ \starttext %\font\bf=cmbx12 %Normal text. \bf Bold text. \pdfximage{test.pdf} \pdfrefximage\pdflastximage \stoptext ------------------ And that is!!! Text 'bold text' is typeset with totaly different font from cmbx12, so it is smashed by wrong metric! See the attached file. If I uncomment two lines, so the font cmbx12 is not only present in the included file, the result is correct. Where is the problem? Something mixing cm and lm? I though that included file comes with all font resources. textools ne woption

Math and MATHML problem

Hello, I'm trying to typset some math. when I use \startbuffer ...here mathml ...\stopbuffer and a following \processXMLbuffer I get a nice centered formula. When I save that code to a file myeq1.xml and try to include it with \processXMLfile{myeq1.xml}I compillation stops at that point. \processXMLfilegrouped{myeq1.xml} produces a formula again but 2 additional symbold appear at the beginning of the formula. Questions: - What is my fault? - Whow can I set the alignment of formulas (ie leftaligned)? printing an envelope.

Using my my Ricoh AP2600 printer I want to feed envelopes with the narrow side first, which means the the print image must be rotated 90 degrees. It is not clear how this can be done in Context. Is there a way to force colums to be narrower than the default in the Table (basic) table environment? The first line of my column is: Amount spent on store modernization by the chains The columns underneath are all single numbers, meaning they have huges spaces to the right: year Amount spent on store modernization by the chains === ================================================= 1933 33,000,000 1934 37,000,000 Do I have to use the more sophisticated TABLE module? vertical shift in tabulate

Hello, I have the following tabuation: \starttabulate[|l|p|l|] ... \stoptabulate In the third column I put just single words, but in the middle column whole paragraphs. I want the word in the third column to be vertically aligned with the lowest line of the paragraph in the middle column (like the html valign=bottom). I cannot find how to accomplish this. Maybe someone can give me a hint? tanks Peter

placing figures left with no wrap

How can I place a figure to the left of the page *without* having any text wrap around it? If I use: \placefigure[here]{{\bf figure 1.1: }Woolworth store in Lexington}{\externalfigure[WWORIG ref]} I get a graphic that is centered. I want to push the graphic to the left of the page. The only way I know how to achive this right now is with: externalfigure[WWORIG ref] \par {\bf figure 1.1:} Woolworth store in Lexington \par But this method probably won't keep my captions and graphics together. If the graphic is placed at the bottom of the page, my caption will appear on the next page. Do I need to save the graphic as a buffer and then place the buffer? List of figures with shorter captions

Hello all, I'm busy with writing a paper for university and the teachers "ordered" me to include a List of Figures. So now I'm using \completelistoffigures to get the list of figures. However, my captions with the figures are quite long so I was wondering if it's possible to let ConTeXt write a different text to the List of Figures. I thought something similar was possible with the Table of Contents and the \chapter command, but I cannot remember how...maybe I imagined. So is it possible to write a different text to the LoF? I use \placefigure[here]{This is my very long caption} {\externalfigure[myfigure]} to place my figures in the text. I've experimented with using \writetolist[figure]{1}{short caption} to write a text to the LoF, but there are some problems with that method. (the figure can be placed on a different page than the \writetolist, and I'll need a way to stop ConTeXt writing the caption text to the list as well). Any ideas? My best, Tim

Lettrine in ConTeXt

Hi ConTeXters! I played a little with Taco's implementation of Lettrine and it worked nice, but the capital letter is always in CMR10. The option TextFont works fine, and one can change the font that comes after the dropped cap with commands like \sc (default), \it, \sl or \bf, but the option FontHook, which changes the font of the capital, doesn't seem to work when one uses, for example, \setuplettrine[Lines=3,TextFont=\it,FontHook=\bf,Findent=0pt,Nindent=0pt] . Hello, here comes a feature request: Could ConTeXt add to the dvi-file information about paper-size, so that one does not need the -t option of dvips? \textellipsis definition wrong

I’m using 2005.01.31 and \textellipsis expands to \cdots, which isn’t what it’s supposed to do. It should be \ldots, or preferably just \dots. Or, if that’s not what you want to do, at least don’t use \textellipsis for U+2026 HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS in unic-032.tex. Handy font install script.

The good news is that texfonts works as advertised, and the fonts can be used for any flavor of TeX except LaTeX which usually wants an .fd file. Even LaTeX users can use it if they are willing to use the old fashioned \font statement. I downloaded the sharefont and freefont collections for use with Gimp, but then had a need to use some of them with Context. Now there are dozens of fonts in each collection. So I wrote a wrapper script for texfonts to save time and errors. Here is my procedure (Slackware Linux computer, TeX installation taken from Slackware-current): 1. Create a subdirectory for each font or font family, and move all the files for the font/family to that subdirectory. 2. Run Ghostscript utility pf2afm on each font to create needed afm files (they don't come with.) 3. Modify updmap.cfg to accept a file called plus.map. 4.Move to the subdirectory, then run the following script makefonts, making up a foundry and family name appropriate to the font(s). The command is: "makefonts foundry family" ------------------------------------------------------- mkdir /usr/share/texmf-local/fonts/source/$1 mkdir /usr/share/texmf-local/fonts/source/$1/$2 cp * /usr/share/texmf-local/fonts/source/$1/$2/ texfont --en=8r --ve=$1 --co=$2 --ma --in cd /usr/share/texmf-local/fonts/map/pdftex/context/ cat *map >plus.map cp plus.map /usr/share/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap updmap texhash ------------------------------------------------------ 5. Modify the tex test file produced by texfonts to include near the end a \font statement and "The quick brown fox..." text in all caps and then in lower case. (Some of these fonts have no lower case.) 6. compile and inspect the test program. As always the script will have to be adapted to your particular installation. And I haven't bothered to figure out how to make it work in MSWin. The change I made in step 6 above might be worth doing in texfonts. Some donated fonts have problems with spacing between words, or even with the characters themselves. The generated afm files are also suspect in this regard. I hope this saves someone some time. Suppose I have the following PPCHTeX code: \startchemical \chemical[SIX,ROT2,B,R36,RZ6][CH_3] \chemical[PB:RZ3,ONE,Z05,SB5,EP37,PE][O,H] \stopchemical . Now, if I want `size' to be `big' but `scale' to be `small', I just type: \startchemical[size=big,scale=small] et cetera, but then I have a problem: the two couples of electrons that are above and under the oxygen atom come much too close the oxygen atom, they come onto it. Hello, I initially was looking for having several multilign text box in a metapost. But I do not know how to it. I finally take the technic of "register" as explain in the "complex text in graphic" paragraph of the metafun manual. But then, I was to animate it in a presentation. I learn to animate with the "growing graphic" chapter. But I do not know how to combine register and animate. Does somebody has an example of doing so ... I will try to reverse engineer his source ;-) so he or she will not lose his time with me ? In case you like to reverse my source, I give it as a small example. Dear list members, When I needed arrows (e.g. for pyruvate ----> lactate or pyruvate <----> lactate I first tried on my own (\arrow, $\arrow$ $\ar$ etc.) without success. I then found "The comprehensive Latex Symbol List" by Scott Parkin and tried various combinations of \usemodule[modulename] and the commands listed, with our without $$. Some worked, some didn't. I do have what I need at the moment, but would like to know: 1. Is this the way to do it in Context? 2. Is there a recommended or particularly comprehensive module that covers a maximum number of symbols (I successfully tried "ams" and "wasysym" so far? 3. Differnce between context and latex math

Hi, I am trying to move from latex to context, but it seems that the defaults of both differ. Consider the following \defineenumeration [theorem] [ headstyle=bold, style=italic, location=hanging, text=Theorem, between=\blank ] \starttext \starttheorem This is a test \placeformula \startformula a = b \stopformula And the test continues. Notice that the equation number is in \type{\it} and not in \type{\upshape}. \stoptheorem \stoptext Notice that the equation number is italic. Compare this with something similar in latex \documentclass{article} \newtheorem{theorem}{Theorem} \begin{document} \begin{theorem} This is a test \begin{equation} a = b \end{equation} And the test continues. Notice that the equation number is in \verb|\upshape| and not in \verb|\it|. \end{theorem} \end{document} Here the equation number is in upshape. Unfortunately none of this is the behaviour I originally experienced in my large project file, which was stalling the process with the following error: ! Why are all the typescripts accessed?

When I texexec a file the names of all the typescripts on the system scroll by. Is something set up wrong? This slows down each run significantly. I run Slackware Linux and the TeX package from Slack-Current. How to use .eps figure in ConTeXt?

Today I try to insert .eps file in to my presentation. I use \externalfigure[xx.eps] to insert xx.eps. The figure shows correct in the dvi file generated by "texexec --once --texutils xx.tex". However this figure disappears in the pdf file generated by "texexec --pdf xx.tex". The log says "figures: xx.eps has zero dimensions". What is the problem? In the example the numbers withing math mode (and the greek symbols) are set in regular style, while the rest of the title is printed in bold. Removing space between figure and caption

I'm working on a presentation in ConTeXt, and running into a problem with some figures; I can't seem to figure out how to get things to do what I want. In the actual document, the figure contains its own whitespace, and so I'd like the top of the caption text to be right up against the bottom of the figure. Animations in ConTeXt

Hello list, i have recently found the webpage http://www.tug.org/texshowcase/ with a lot of astonishing TeX typesettings. Most of all, because i was looking for this, i was impressed by the animation possibilities of pdftex. See 'LorenzAttractor.tex' in the 'Dynamic documents' section. It is a LaTeX implementation using a lot of JavaScript. Is something like this possible in ConTeXt? I'm aware of fieldstacks and step by step presentations. But i would like to generate 'pdf-movies', especially for mathematical animations using MetaPost as an graphical engine. There exists also a 'solution' for plain TeX: http://www.fi.muni.cz/~xholecek/animations/ But i had no success in generating the pdf-files from the sources. No animation was shown. So again. Is it possible to write something like the above animation packages in ConTeXt (as a module)? Unicode symbols in math mode

prevent hyphenation

Hi. I'm typesetting a text with some citations in nineteenth-century Dutch and French, in which I don't want hyphenation. How can this be done? I now have two macros: \def\stophyph{\pretolerance=15000\tolerance=400} \def\starthyph{\pretolerance=200\tolerance=400} At the beginning of every citation I enter \stophyph{} and at the end \starthyph{}. presentations: "page number" and "next page"

Hello, Shortly: I would like modify the meaning of "previous/next page" buttons in interaction menu to point to the previous/next slide instead on the previous/next physical page. And I would like to number pages according to slides instead of considering physical pages. *********************************************************************** And here's a more detailed description: I use the "rsteps" module (by David Munger) for my presentation. I also use the interaction menu: \startinteractionmenu[bottom] ... \but [nextpage] \symbol[nextpage] \\ \but [lastpage] \symbol[lastpage] \\ ... \but [CloseDocument] \symbol[CloseDocument] \\ \stopinteractionmenu Instead of \but [previouspage] \symbol[previouspage] \\ \but [nextpage] \symbol[nextpage] \\ pointing on the previous and next slide, I would like these two buttons to have slightly different functionality: pointing to the LAST step of the previous/next slide. Apart from that, I would like to keep the page number on different steps of the same slide. I would use this number to print it in footer and to call it from Metafun (PageNumber, NOfPages or a similar name, as in meta-ini.tex). Here's the idea of how the presentation should look like. lost position information with metafun registers

Dear ConTeXt users (and developers), I am very fond of the presentation capabilites of ConTeXt, especially in connection with the Metafun macros. A big hand for the ConTeXt team! Now I want to link some checkboxes to a MPgraphic (a fieldstack actually) and I thought, that the best approach would be via the layer mechanism described in section 5.4 of the Metafun manual. I got the background picture and the checkboxes, but unfortunately the checkboxes were not in the intended positions (saved in register macros) but rather in the top left corner of the image. Metapost animation

Good evening. First of all I want to thank to Mr. Hagen for his last answer. I will check your last code of balanced columnsets at home (with the newest ConTeXt). As for your correcting code for ordinary collumns, I have tried it with three different types of my documents, and it worked well. Maybe this is the final solution of the problem. I will try it with more documents and let you know, anyway. Now to my next question. I have seen a great thing: Metapost pictures were animated (probably with the JavaScript code). You can found some examples here: http://www.math.muni.cz/~plch/nkpm/nradanm6.pdf http://www.math.muni.cz/~plch/nkpm/nradanm8.pdf (Just click on the `Spustit animaci' button.) Is it possible to do it simply in the ConTeXt? Of course I may break down the mechanism of widgets and write my own JavaScript (I don't know how to do timing), but isn't there some special macro for animating series of figures? It would be great. If so, is Acrobat Reader fast enough to simulate this way the nice feature of MS PowerPoint---curves and shapes that are drawn by pieces, or that appear somewhere and then go to its final location? Just to add a slightly different flavour, I have been using PdfLatex for several years to produce technical manuals for various pieces of software, which have included a lot of graphics and tables. I have recently changed to ConText mainly because it is far easier to set up how you want the text to be displayed and you don't need to include lots of additional packages which often have side effects with each other and need to be included in the correct order. I have also found it very easy to modify Latex input to Context input and particularly like the separation possible with graphics (whereby you can have a separate file that points to the graphics file and not have to embed the file name in the middle of the document) It would be nice if this list could produce some "good" layouts for others to use to provide us all with some defaults and a starting point rather than everyone reinventing the wheel. While I appreciate TeX's support for attractive curly quotes, when representing console text it is important to use straight single and double quotes. I've been googling, exploring the list archives, reading the source, and beating my head against a nice blue pillar over by the window. None of these approaches has resulting in a straight single quote. Problems placing figures II

Hi all, regarding my problems with figure placing (posted on 2005-05-05), I've found out that problems occur only if there are too many unplaced figures (pending floats). After a lot of googling, I've only found out that in LaTeX, there's a command \clearpage which places all unprocessed floats and starts a new page. In addition, the commands \totalnumber, \topnumber and \bottomnumber are available to set the maximum float count on one page. (for details, see http://www.tug.org.in/tutorial/chap09-scr.pdf) Is there any similar mechanism in ConTeXt? Which command(s) can I use to place all unprocessed figures immediately? Thanks in advance. It works beautifully with complex equations and embedding maths into text. Everything in it -- including the CM fonts -- screams "mathematics!". ConTeXt is developed for typesetting manuals. Some requirements are the same, for example the need for very solid and reliable cross-references. Some requirements are different. Manuals and other documentation require more control over the layout and a very good support for illustrations. Writing a thesis in science falls somewhere in between. If you are writing something about quantum mechanics, I'd say you should use LaTeX. If you are living on the fringe and doing something more computer-oriented (or even chemical), the intentions of ConTeXt developers and you converge better than with LaTeX. I wrote my PhD thesis with LaTeX, because that was the only viable alternative back then (four years ago). Now I think I'd use ConTeXt due to its better layout handling. [For the curious: the thesis is available at http://lib.tkk.fi/Diss/2001/isbn9512257270/ I can supply the LaTeX sources plus a document telling about the tools and rationale behind, if someone needs it. But be warned, it is not up-to-date information.] --- Someone suggested using a ready-made template. Sure, if you can get one somewhere with all the bells and whistles suitable for your academic institution, take it. Be it ConTeXt or LaTeX, you'll save a lot of trouble using a proven platform. Beautiful documents with minimal effort. That's exactly what the universities should supply. Very unfortunately, there are seldom any good templates around. Very often there are no *TeX templates around, regardless of quality. There may be some half-hearted Word templates around, but at that point ducking or running -- whichever is more convenient -- is a good alternative. And if there are no good templates around, then you'll need to roll your own. One which fulfills all requirements set by the administrators (all those lovely forms) and is easy-to-read and looks nice. One of the mixed blessings (=curses) brought about by computers is that now you need to be an academic writer, a typesetter, and a graphic artist at the same time. At this point the number of should-knows explodes. On the typography side you have to know a million small things. What kind of quotes to use, when to use en dash, when to use em dash, how to hyphenate, how to type numbers and units. Then you need to decide on the typefaces to use, and the general layout of the page. After all this is understood, then the technical problems have to be overcome. You will need to find the fonts you want to use, and you will need to be able to explain all this to the type- setting system in use. Also, you have to be able to draw the illustrations, with the requirement that they are both aesthetically pleasing and help to convey the message they carry. To do this, you need the software to draw the illustrations and the file formats to transfer the drawings to the typesetting system. After all this is done, you can try to produce the printed book. This may sound trivial, but is far away from that. There may be problems with file formats (with an old version of pdfLaTeX I managed to make a file which crashed a commercial RIP system, this happened a few days before a big deadline), or at least with color matching if nothing else. --- Does the above sound easy? Not for me. Still, you are expected to make a professional-looking document in a situation where you need to know half a dozen professions completely unrelated to your own scientific field. The result is that most people resort to using the Word and a lot of other four-letter words. The documents range from hideous to just slightly ugly, and are extremely fragile and difficult to maintain. --- What I am trying to say is that choosing the tool is only one part of the project. Whichever tool you choose, you'll end up in trouble at some point. With some tools (WYSIWYG) you'll end up in worse trouble, but even with *TeX the road is bumpy at best, unless you really have a tested and proven templates which you can use. The bumpiness has (IMO) slightly different nature in LaTeX than in ConTeXt. In LaTeX there are a lot of great packages and a lot of documentation. Books, web resources, mailing lists, etc. The huge user base makes all this available. However, finding the right packages and debugging some odd interactions and conflicts between packages may be very difficult. ConTeXt gives a lot more control over layout in itself without any packages or modules. And if you want something more exotic, take metapost and do it. But the downside of this is that as ConTeXt is a new system and has relatively fewer users, the state of documentation is not very good. Even the official documents are sometimes out-of-date. (This is really not to blame Hans or anyone else. Hey, we get free high-quality software! But this is something that has to be acknowledged and in the long run acted upon. By us users.) Whichever you choose, you'll have moments when you wish you'd chosen differently. --- Sorry, a long posting without really any good answer. The only suggestion I give is that try to make the layout rather early in the process. That way the writing is more fun, as you can see the outcome already during the writing process. Hi everybody, is anyone experienced in archiving PDF? I need archiving lots of different PDFs in different sizes and formats into workbooks or folders with index files. How could I possibly look into each PDF, getting the title info and generate an index? How do I do clickable references to each content PDF? How could I practically bind PDF together (ZIP, tar, ...)? Is there some sort of workbook-like file-format? I had problems with re-arranging oddly generated PDFs via pdftex so I want avoiding re-arrangement. Thanks much for any hint. Thomas Schrader

font mapfiles

Sorry for reposting, but I'm really curious about this issue! I just had to reinstall my TeX installation (upgrade to OS X 10.4). After mucking around with my old TeX, I decided to reinstall, and I hit a problem: even though I ran updmap, ConTeXt doesn't seem to work with the fonts I installed myself unless I include the \loadmapfile [foo] either in the typescript or in the source file. This wasn't the case before. I also tried moving the mapfiles to texmf/fonts/map/ pdftex/context insteadt of just fonts/map/, but that didn't change anything. Am I missing something obvious, or is this the expected behavior? I much prefer to have system-wide mapfiles since I use LaTeX from time to time and want the same fonts available there. They work with plain pdfetex as well, it's just ConTeXt that gives trouble. So my question is: is this the new setup, are we supposed to load mapfiles this way, and what is the advantage over the old method? Thanks! Thomas

Dear NTG-context denizens, today I went to work to make up my mind about whether it would be a good idea to go ahead and produce my BSc. Thesis with ConTeXt. It's clear, I'm very much attracted to it's approach, I do like the syntax and the focus on PDF output (I never used DVI before) et cetera pp. This is my first post to the list and I'm happy that CB just formulated my main requirements. The hard contraints are certainly 2, 3 and 5. I've seen Hrabans' ciee juxtaposition of ConTeXt and LaTeX, and after searching the list I am not sure whether going for a KOMA class wouldn't be better considering that I definitely don't have time develop my own ConTeXt environment this time. I've also seen the MS thesis of Han The Thanh. It's good. But I would need something more suited for natural sciences that accomodates plenty of figures and references. Also I would like to "cloak" my thesis by avoiding Computer Modern. Do ready-made "academic templates" by one of you experts exist - or do you dissuade me from "just using" ConTeXt for for writing academic literature? - Tobias

unrelated errors

Dear list members, I made the following observation and I am wondering whether that is to be expected: After, with the help of this list, I found out how to insert greek strings, I adjusted the .tex file accordingly. But because I used an automatic replacement procedure (in emacs), one of the many replacements turned out "\Greek" instead of "\greek". texexec complained, but I didn't spot the mistake immediately and pressed return. In the resulting pdf file I found the following unrelated errors: 1. One "\inmargin" figure appeared as if the command was "\inothermargin" 2. One "\inothermargin" word appeard "\inmargin" 3. All the references to figures and tables went unrecognised ("??"). After I changed \Greek to \greek, all these errors disappeared. This seems to be the same problem I had earlier, when I used \inmarge instead of \inmargin and my newer setups didn't recognise it: all the references were gone, and reappeared when the mistake was corrected. Dear gang, I need a way to overlay four framed boxes so that each inner box is exactly in the center of its respective outer box. So far I have the following, but careful inspection will show that the boxes are not precisely centered with respect to each other. I could go on by trial and error but I'm sure there is a direct way to do this. The text should also be precisely centered between frames. Thank you in advance! Dear all, I am trying to set up a layout for part of my daughter's thesis. She has a portion of a long middle English poem to present as an 'edition'. The lines are incremented on every seventh line starting at 302 according to the manuscript she is using. Is there a way to reference words from particular lines using the line number as the footnote number? The first line of the poem is 302 Could the footnote read 302 lande (in bold) : an open grassy space in a forest 305 boures (in bold) : a chamber or dwelling and so on. Could the footnotes be in two columns? I notice that footnotes are ignored if line numbering is on. I am at a loss here. Also \inmargin is ignored also. Any help would be appreciated. hi all, I am a newbie of ConTeXt, i'm sorry if my question is foolish. I have two questions: 1. Is there a mathematica typesetting manual for ConTeXt ? There seems no ConTeXt manual focused on mathematica. Or I just need to find a mathematica manual for LaTeX ? 2. I'm running TeTeX 2.0.2 on Debian Sarge, and the version of texexec is 3.1 which I think is out of date, so i tried to update ConTeXt. I downloaded www.pragma-ade.com/context/latest/cont-tmf.zip , and unziped it to /usr/local/share/texmf/, then I ran "mktexlsr" and "texexec --make --all". But when i ran "texexec --version", the version was still 3.1. It seemed that the texexec wasn't updated. Thanks in advance!!

What is the best way to encourage line breaks without hyphenation? I've tried many combinations of \setuptolerances, \clubpenalty, \widowpenalty \emergencystretch, etc. All to no avail. Basically, I've got XML content that is being rendered. Part of that content needs to fit inside a small box at a large font size. (It's a custom command tied to \chapter.) Although a line consisting of a single word followed by copious white space would normally be very bad, in this case it is fine. Below is an example situation where I want the text to be rendered on two lines instead of one. Context, LaTeX, or an XML for academic writing?

Hi, I'm returning to graduate study after a few years out in the workplace. I'm a bit rusty on what good stuff there is out there for academic writing, and after a bit of research I've come up with: ConTeXt, LaTeX or an XML dtd (tbook or DocBook?) plus appropriate tools. I'm ruling out Word (having wrestled with it at work), and am reluctant to use anything similar like OpenOffice. I have used LaTeX for some things in the past. There will a little maths in my writing, but it's not central. Here are my main criteria for choice, in order of priority: 1) future-proofing. ie. I want my text to be always available to me forever, or until I die, whichever comes first. I take this to mean that I want the canonical form of my documents to be plain text of some sort. It also means that the system needs to be widely-used enough that it will be translateable into essential future formats as they arise. 2) semantic rather than layout-oriented markup as much as possible. I'm impatient with, and marginally interested in, layout. I'm very interested in what my text means. As much as possible, I want to set up my layouts early in the piece, and never think about them again. 3) relatively easy integration with some form of bibliographic database(ish) system (bibtex would do). 4) ability to produce pdf's, html, and rtf versions (for interoperation with Word-users) at least. 5) no need for me to write any code. I used to be a programmer, and when I left, promised myself, my wife, and my cat that I would never write a line of code again. I don't mind a bit of TeXish fiddling if *absolutely* necessary. ConTeXt seems to fit the bill for 1,3 and 5. I'm not sure about 4 (html? rtf?) or 2 (I haven't had a proper look at the nature of the available macros yet) . Would anyone with 1st hand knowledge of writing in academia care to comment either on the above or your own reasons for your choice of tools? I am doing my own research on all this stuff, but I know that until I get into the fray, there will be things I haven't thought of. Cheers, CB.

presentation style

Hi there, I used Skdk_style for a presentation, the style file downloaded from the contextgarden.net. It was all fine with the TexExec 5.2.3. I just updated TexExec to 5.2.4 version. However, the active link on the right side stopped working, i.e. after clicking on the title, it wont go to the title page which it was linked to. Also the page number now is explicitly shown on the slides too, as you will see the numbers in black. Attached is just one page from the presentation. Any suggestions how to have it fixed? font mapfiles

I just had to reinstall my TeX installation (upgrade to OS X 10.4). After mucking around with my old TeX, I decided to reinstall, and I hit a problem: even though I ran updmap, ConTeXt doesn't seem to work with the fonts I installed myself unless I include the \loadmapfile [foo] either in the typescript or in the source file. This wasn't the case before. I also tried moving the mapfiles to texmf/fonts/map/ pdftex/context insteadt of just fonts/map/, but that didn't change anything. Am I missing something obvious, or is this the expected behavior? I much prefer to have system-wide mapfiles since I use LaTeX from time to time and want the same fonts available there. They work with plain pdfetex as well, it's just ConTeXt that gives trouble. So my question is: is this the new setup, are we supposed to load mapfiles this way, and what is the advantage over the old method? Thanks! Thomas

how to align footer text

How do I set up the space between the bottom of the page and my footer text? I need to setup a 1 inch margin at the bottom of the page. I need for the pagenumber to be centered and 1/2 inch from the bottom. Here's what I have: \definelayout[MyCustomLayout][ topspace=1in, header=0in, bottomspace=1.0in, bottomdistance=.5in, footer=.5in, footerdistance=1mm, backspace=1.5in, cutspace=.75in, height=middle, width=middle,] \setuplayout[MyCustomLayout] \part{} setupfootertexts[\hfill{}\pagenumber{}\hfill{}][][\hfill{}\pagenumber{}\hfill{}][] The problem with this setup is that the page number appears to close to the bottom of the page. placefigure inmargin; inmargin justification

Greetings all, I've been experimenting a little with margin-notes, and am wondering if there is support for running the inmargin text around a figure, e.g. \inmargin{\placefigure[left]{none}{\externalfigure[Figgy][width=4em]} Interesting words.} The above places the figure and the text on top of each other. It also appears that there is no option in an inmargin text to have both-sides-justified. Is this a general stylistic assumption? In this instance, my margins are to be unusually large. And finally, if it's simply the case here, is there a nice way to achieve a similar result (as margin notes) on multiple pages, two- sided, where the main text width runs normally from page to page? I'm thinking of perhaps pseudo-columns. Thanks, David Wooten
