\setupfootnotes (double-spacing)

Is there a general way to double-space the text of footnotes using \setupfootnotes or some other ConTeXt command? I have checked the manuals, core-not.text, and the wiki but have not seen one yet. \baselineskip=2/bodyfontsize works well with the body text, but does not affect the footnotes; and I have not been able to figure out how to adapt it for \setupfootnotes. RTF can capture everything that .doc can (MS update it every time they rev the .doc format), and it has the advantage that it is defined in a spec with a grammar, which means that importing routines (like the one in OO.o) tend to be better than for the binary .doc format. So I would usually use .rtf as the Save As... from Word, rather than relying on OO.o's reverse engineering of the .doc format. Others' experiences may vary, of course, and perhaps I do an injustice to OO.o's Word imports, which have certainly improved. bug in \seeindex

The code in \seeindex has a bug. There was something in the mailing list about a year ago (2004-06-21), but as far as I can see, the patch Hans proposed then has been integrated into core-reg.tex. Here's a minimal test file: \starttext This \index{this} and \index{and} that \seeindex{this}. \placeindex \stoptext And the error log: ! Argument of \@@filterlevelpart has an extra }. <inserted text> \par <to be read again> } \doifprevlevelelse ...tor \@@filterlevelpart [#1]} \edef \@@tocsectiontype {\... \dosetpageregisterpage ...->\doifreglevelelse [#5] {\dodosetpageregisterpage ... l.46 ...isterpage{index}{,}{3}{2::0:0:0:0:0:0:0}{} Unfortunately, the bug messes up the .tui file, so even if you delete the \seeindex command, the file will not compile unless you delete the .tui manually. Hello ConTeXters, I do not want to ask too much, especially as Taco already mentioned he'll be doing a patch for the BibTeX-module... But how do I setup interaction in \cite? \setupinteraction[state=true] works for \at, \in and in the contents but not for \cite. As I weren't able to find it in the documentation nor in the archives, I'll try here. Thx in advance, Adam.

Personally I don't like the FO approach, for a variety of reasons, but I'm sure others have had success with it. But you should also explore DocBook-in-ConTeXt, which uses ConTeXt's native XML processing capabilities. It's possible to get sucked into things like an FO implementation or an XML conversion and find that you have spent months perfecting it and it only shaves half an hour off your production time! Also, you do tend to have to make compromises in design if you want to be able to process directly from XML. But if you have sufficient throughput and an appropriate design, it can be a real boon. Hi all, Just build teTeX 3.0, updated pdftex, ConTeXt and VnTeX on my FreeBSD 6.0-BETA5 box. So, I've stumbled across a problem: if you have only two authors in a BibTeX entry, cont-au.bst sets "AuthorA and AuthorB" which is -- IMHO -- unaccaptable for a german document. I had to manually edit cont-au.bst and change a line in FUNCTION {format.lab.names} { 's := s #1 "{vv~}{ll}" format.name$ s num.names$ duplicate$ #2 > { pop$ " et~al." * } { #2 < 'skip$ { s #2 "{ff }{vv }{ll}{ jj}" format.name$ "others" = { " et~al." * } { " and " * s #2 "{vv~}{ll}" format.name$ * } if$ } if$ } if$ "{" swap$ * "}," * } from "and" to "und". Dear all, I read an instruction of using a Chinese truetype font in the ConTeXt wiki. In the step 9, there is a mention about "test file from Lutz", but there is no attached file. TeX + Metapost syntax highlighting in Vim

In case someone finds this experimental piece of code for highlighting metapost inside ConTeXt useful, put: " ConTeXt augroup filetypedetect au! BufRead,BufNewFile *.tex setfiletype context augroup END somewhere to your filetype.vim (probably after TeX) and move the attached file to syntax\context.vim. If you have something like \startMPpage draw ... \stopMPpage, it will do the syntax highligting for metapost inside the \start-\stop pair. There are still some "bugs" present (see comments in file), but I don't know how yet to get rid of them. I downloaded SpellChecker and SuperTab (autocomplete) today from the vim website and it works great! (see http://contextgarden.net/Vim and feel free to add any useful stuff there) I was astonished as I saw autocomplete work. There are only a couple of lines with an extraordinary functionality. I think that if someone writes a good script to convert texshow to vim syntax highlighting script, than autocomplete will be able to provide good hints for all the existing commands in ConTeXt and the corresponding parameters. I'll try to see what I can do, but please don't excpect any results too soon. I've recently been doing a little work on implementing a few LaTeX kernel bits in ConTeXt, to simplify porting LaTeX code over. It's now at a point where a few of the pieces might actually be useful, and certainly to a point where some comments would be welcomed, so I've put up a version of it online, in this directory: http://dpdx.net/context/latex-compat/ What you'll find there is a fair number of module files, along with a couple of "latextest" files that I've been using to try out the results. latextext.tex is to be compiled in ConTeXt; latextext-latex.tex is to be compiled in LaTeX for purposes of comparison. In any case, I think the implementation of \newcommand (and its relatives) is about up to "beta" level. Ditto with LaTeX lengths. And there's a working LaTeX-like counter implementation, based on ConTeXt counters underneath. (It's not yet hooked into ConTeXt's counters for footnotes and equations and pages, though; I'm not really sure how to do that.) Also, environments are working, in a sort of hackish way. The "array" environment works, but again a bit hackish; I'm planning to clean that up soon, so both of those will get major revisions. I'd particularly appreciate any comments on the \newcommand and counters implementations -- those are in the t-ltcmds and t-ltcnts modules, though \newcommand also depends on t-lterrs and t-ltbase. - Brooks

Hello I am trying to follow the instructions in the article "OpenType installation basics for ConTeXt", but the generated map file does not contain anything but commented lines. I have tried searching the web for a solution but I did not find any, so I hope you can help me. formatting \note output

Though I have asked this question before and there was no response, I thought I would ask the following once more (before going through my source files and making the changes by hand). Does anyone know how to modify or adapt \note so that the output is a footnote number in normal/body text format---e.g., “(ref.\ \note [lemur])” becomes “(ref.\ 9)”---rather than a superscripted numeral? utf-based lang-* files?

Salvete, while I am aware that my Japanese is ages away from creating anything releasable, I thought about creating a lang-jap.tex file for my personal use (and maybe for having it corrected by someone actually speaking the language). Now, checking lang-chi.tex, I find it is encoded in a way I don't really want to copy. I'd much rather write the whole file in “proper” utf-8. Is it possible to simply enclose the file in a \startregime[utf]...\stopregime pair or do I risk havoc by doing this? (Should I start with this project, I'll have more questions, such as: How do I make a unicode character such as 。active, for good line breaks?) Christopher

Normal \delta, Maths \mathematics\delta, Greek \greekdelta\par} \stoptext ---- With the line '\setupbodyfont[TESTCombo,14pt]' everything works well, but when I change it to '\setupbodyfont[TESTCombo,10pt]' the Delta signs disappear! (The lowercase deltas remain - weird?) I am really confused (and it took ages to understand what was happening, since the disappearing Greek originally occurred in a 700 page book...). When comparing the log files for each version, the broken one (10pt) has the line: ---- Warning: pdfetex.exe (file c:\tex\texmf/fonts/type1/urw/palatino/uplr8a.pfb): glyph `uni20AC' undefined ---- whereas the working one (14pt) doesn't, and instead has: ---- {c:\tex\texmf-local/fonts/enc/dvips/lm/cmrm.enc}<c:\tex\texmf/fonts/type1/public/lm/lmr10.pfb> ---- So, it seems to be something to do with a missing switch to the font which contains the \Delta character, but why should it only happen at smaller font sizes? I tried \CL[colorname], \BR[colorname] and neither gets quite what I want. Is there a simple way to set the background color for only the first row? I have only just started using ConTeXT, never used TeX or LaTeX before, so I'm still trying to understand everything I read in the manuals, and searching the list archive. Hi all, I just upgraded to the latest ConTeXT (ConTeXt ver: 2005.09.14 fmt: 2005.9.19 int: english mes: english) and now I cannot typeset anything... For instance the following minimal example results in an empty PDF: \starttext This is a test. \stoptext The log file says among other things: Warning: pdfetex (file lm-ec.enc): cannot open encoding file for reading </usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/type1/public/lm/lmr12.pfb Warning: pdfetex (file /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/type1/public/lm /lmr12.pfb): character 46 is mapped to .notdef and a few other warnings about characters 49 and so on. Since I have been away from the follow up of the changes occured for a while, can anyone give a clue? Thanks in advance: OK

Need more documentation on tables

Ok, even with the wiki and all the manuals around (which are getting obsolete, too) there is definitely too little documentation on the various tabulation formats. The biggest problem is that each table type has its ability, but there is nothing that can do everything. Simplest example, I'm currently having a problem using a start/stoptabulate (which I need because \RC & friends don't work in start/stoptable) but I don't know how to span multiple columns (which can be done in start/stoptable with \use, which doesn't work in start/stoptabulate) What am I supposed to do? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

lilypond inclusion

Dear list, especially Hraban, who had asked for sth like this, I had tried sending this yesterday, but with the pdf output included, it was too big for the list. In any case, please find enclosed a tentative lilypond inclusion file and a sample file. The whole thing basically works (though support for non-pdf versions is currently absent, but should be relatively easy to implement), but I'm sure I've taken a non-ConTeXt-way at more than one place and I have a few problems, most of them lilypond-related. The first three are strictly ConTeXt-related, though: - I can't include blank lines in \startlilypond...\stoplilypond, because in the buffer I will get a \par for that. There is probably some easy way around this, but I haven't found the idiom yet. - Currently, the whole generation only works with shell_escape=t. Is there a way to use the automp mechanism for other external programs, such as lilypond, as well? It would also save quite some time to only typeset each piece of music only once. - How can I detect whether a pdf file contains multiple pages? - I have only tested the system on my Tiger installation. I'd like to know if it works for others, too. - When typesetting a longer block, I'd like to tell lilypond how much space there is left on the first page, to have music break across pages smoothly with the text. - When typesetting a fragment, I'd like to somehow get a proper baseline from lilypond. I have neither found out how to ask if there is more than one line typeset, nor for the baseline (let's say the bottom line of the staff), which obviously depends on the music actually set. The sample file uses an explicit \lower command with a trial-&-error value. I assume that the lilypond TeX backend gives me something that could be useful here, but I haven't analyzed it in detail. regards, Christopher

Complex layout question

Hi all, I have a LARGE (we're talking about the hundred scale) number of floats I would like to distribute across a document. These are paired (a table and a figure). The layout that results from coupling them side by side doesn't satisfy me, so I was looking for a different approach. I would like them to be distributed across the pages by placing the tables at the top left and the figure at the bottom right, text flowing around them. Since there is a very large number of floats, I would like this placement to be automatic: "From now on, do this until you run out of text/floats" I already did something like the following \newcount\curvenum \global\curvenum=1 \def\newpar{ \oldpar \glet\par\oldpar \input tests/curves-\the\curvenum.tex \global\advance\curvenum1 \ifnum\curvenum<8\let\par\newpar\fi } \let\oldpar\par \let\par\newpar to "delay-load" floats, since loading them all at once fills up the main memory. startlines space width

I am having problems with startlines. I'm using space=yes to preserve space characters. This works fine with default ConTeXt lm/cm font. When I use a font I've imported, however, the spaces aren't quite wide enough. I can fix that with \def\normalspace{\char32}, but then I have problems with embedded floats. What do I need to fix so that the default \def\normalspace{ } has the correct width for the current font? free keycaps font

As far as I can tell, ConTeXt doesn't include a keycaps font. I recently created my own and would like to share it with anyone else that might find it useful. I've included a sample document with it. A side by side float that takes advantage of the margin

I have a situation when I have to put side by side two floats (a table and figure). My current code is \placetable[here][label]{caption}% {\\placesidebyside {table code}{figure code} } The problem is that sometimes the combined width of table and figure is bigger than the textwidth. I would like the combo to be centered across the page, not starting from the left margin of the text and invading the right margin only. How can I achieve this? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Sync with ConTeXt

Hi, using TeXShop 2.03 I was very glad that syncing seems to work even with ConTeXt's project structure. But unfortunately it "only" works from source to pdf (well, already quite useful): Clicking in the pdf has no effect (although my component file starts with %!TEX TS-program = context %!TEX root = ../main.tex Is syncing with ConTeXt not yet fully supported - or is there a work-around for the pdf->source jump that I don't know? Situation: Tree structure: main.tex subdir/inc.tex subdir/fig.1 in main .tex " \include subdir/inc.tex " in subdir/inc.tex " \externalfigure[fig.1] " texexecing main.tex doesn't find the figure fig.1 subdir/inc.tex must use " \externalfigure[subdir/fig.1] " for the figure to be found. Hello, Sorry for a slightly longer mail. I wanted to send it to context-dev, but probably there's someone else besides Adam out there who could contribute (for example to re-chech Greek or Cyrillic section of Unicode or even add some missing Hebrew definitions for example). If someone thinks that it's more appropriate, please feel free to continue the discussion on context-dev. I. in regi-utf it would be fine to add: \defineregimesynonym[utf-8][utf] \defineregimesynonym[utf8][utf] II. After a long time I finally decided to write my first ruby script. I took UnicodeData.txt, adobe glyph list, enco-uc.tex, collected averything together, removed characters >FFFF (in case someone needs them they can trivially be added again, but I don't think that anyone is planning to name them shortly), did some manual corrections ... and here are the results: http://pub.mojca.org/tex/enco/contextlist/ http://pub.mojca.org/tex/enco/contextbase/regi-temp.tex The idea behind is that there is no "definite refence" to the ConTeXt glyph names, which means that every new regime that should be supported needs a lot of manual work and leads to many inconsistencies. The file contextnames.txt contains the Unicode hexadecimal number, pdf name (from Adobe Glyph List), ConTeXt name and the Unicode name. This could then be a source of information when adding new regimes, writing unicode vectors (unic-*), mapping to font encodings, uppercasing/lowercasing information for font encoding and other files can now be derived directly from unicode and this list (unicode already contains information about upper/lowercase variants of the letters) ... There is some more info missing, which should be either packed within the same file or in separate files: - ConTeXt synonyms (like \Dcroat -> \Dstroke, ...) - pdf synonyms (dbar -> dcroat), to help recognize the glyphs in .enc or .afm and automate support for it - faking the characters (\ccaron -> \buildtextaccent\textcaron{C}) - unaccented version of the characters (\Aacute -> A, ...) - other characters not present in unicode (Caron, Acute - these are accents for uppercase letters, ...) - (I'm sure that I wanted to add some more points, but I don't remember any other right now) When I wanted to add the names from unic-34.tex, I realized that we don't really need to have a command for "every single unicode character" (we certainly don't need to map math characters into that region), but if someone already has a file with unicode integrals, it costs nothing to give him those characters in output. (Shortly: 0x2211, "N-ARY SUMMATION" should expand into $\sum$, but not the other way round) I have to slightly change the syntax in the context glyph names file to note this difference and to be able to define math (and other) signs properly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ III. Now I need some help - someone should help me revise the file contextname.txt (I prepared a HTML version of it): correct mistakes (if any are spotted), add new definitions, help to prepare a list of synonyms, a list of expansions (\buildtextaccent), ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here are some points which I spotted, but can't fix them alone 1. Characters missing (needed by some regimes): 0020-007F section 037A GREEK YPOGEGRAMMENI 0384 GREEK TONOS 0385 GREEK DIALYTIKA TONOS 2015 HORIZONTAL BAR 2017 DOUBLE LOW LINE 20AA NEW SHEQEL SIGN 20AB DONG SIGN 20AF DRACHMA SIGN 2116 NUMERO SIGN 200E LEFT-TO-RIGHT MARK 200F RIGHT-TO-LEFT MARK 1Exx section 2. Greek - there are some name inconsistencies when compared to the unic-031 vector, but I don't know anything about old greek. I didn't check Cyrillic at all. 3. Punctuation and accents - mostly names for quotes and language dependency (lowerleftuppersixquote in comparison to lftdblquote ... or whatever they are called) (+ tricks, I already asked about quotes & hyphenation approximately a week ago). I have problems understanding the difference between letter modifiers (U+02Cx) and usual accents (U+00Bx), "Combining Diacritical Marks" (U+03xx) should be supported somehow as well. I have no idea how to make U+0065 U+0301 (e + combining acute accent) into eacute. 4. should hungarumlaut be doubleacute and hungarumlaut only its synonym or the other way round? 5. tbar vs. tstroke: compare 0166 and 023E 6. cedilla/commaaccent dilema: there's a huge problem with "t with cedilla" (0162): "t with comma below" (021A) sould be used instead (at least this is stated in Unicode reference), but most regimes map a character to "t with cedilla" (0162), which seems stupid to me. Adobe glyph list therefore uses tcommaaccent for "t with cedilla", which looks like "t with comma accent", but is on the wrong place. lmr have both tcommaaccent and tcedilla. \tcedilla should be "t with cedilla" in my opinion and \tcommaaccent "t with comma accent". That currently isn't the case in ConTeXt unless something has changed recently. There are many other letter wrongly named in Unicode ("with cedilla"), although they have a comma. I would suggest to name them \[gklnr]commaaccent and use \[gklnr]cedilla as a synonym (if needed at all for backward compatibility, otherwise it would be better to leave them out; there is no such letter with cedilla in unicode, if someone needs one, he can construct one trivially with \buildtextaccent) 7. there's "a-kind-of-bug-but-not-really-one" in enco-ans.tex. textcedilla maps to 184, which isn't defined in Antykwa for example (it's on place 24). It's more a "bug" in texnansi encoding, which has cedilla on two places, which is pretty stupid. But anyway: \definecharacter textcedilla 24 would solve some problems (and hopefully not introduce new ones). 8. most letters are named "c with cedilla" -> ccedilla what about the names for "open o", "turned e", "long s", "turned r with hook"? \openo or \oopen? \rturnedhook or \turnedrhook? 9. can latin letters and numbers be accessed somehow by name? 10. Adam prepared some dingbats support I think, this could be added here. 11. There's a showunicode pdf document on pragma-ade.com (at least I saw it once), but it's not listed on the overview.htm. 12. I don't know if anyone would ever need to switch from viscii regime to some other, but what would happen to the characters under 128 (some of them are redefined in viscii)? I'm affraid that there would remain Vietnamese leftovers in the lower part of the table. 13. If there are any other comments on the table and/or the script(s), please let me know. IV. With the help of the prepared names list I processed definitions for regimes (taken from Unicode webpage) for ISO-8859-* and cp125* (others should be trivial). They are only preliminary, some (Hebrew, Thai, Arabic) probably don't make any sense yet, but could the rest be added to ConTeXt after someone checks if everything is OK? (iso88595, cp1251, il1, il2, il9, windows and viscii regimes already exist and should be compared for differences) If possible in such a way that it wouldn't be necessary to include the regime definition file manually, but similarly as \usemodule[pre-polish] finds and processes the proper file, the \enableregime[xxx] should find the proper file and load it. Greetings (first post), Adam Lindsay's recent article "OpenType installation basics for ConTeXt" in The PracTeX Journal (http://www.tug.org/pracjourn/2005-2/lindsay) is very well written. Unfortunately, I was unable to perform the first step. As the article specified, I ran the command: $ texfont --ma --in --ve=public --co=torunska --lcdf --pre --va=liga,kern It started off OK, but failed to properly create the map file. The last two pages give different results. The line breaking could be influenced by minimal rounding mistakes, but I don't understand why the distances between lines differ substantially. Can't compile the whole project

Hello from a new ConTeXt user! I've read the wiki-page on how to separate input files into a project structure (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Project_structure) and now I have the problem that: - I can "compile" an individual component (resulting in a PDF) - I also can compile a product - But I can't compile the whole __project__! Everytime I try to compile the project, I get the "No pages of output" message in the log. puzzling metafun graphics

This one hast just cost me two hours, and I'm still baffled. The story (in shorthand): was trying to integrate a positional metafun graphic into a presentation. I got no output. I tried making a minimal example file to reproduce the problem, and sure enough, everything went fine. I rebuilt the entire file, by pasting one paragraph of the original file at a time, and I got exactly the output I wanted. [Drumroll] I deleted the original file and everything associated with it [i.e. all those .tui and .tuo etc.], saved the new file from my /tmp directory to my working directory, and -- I got no output again. diff shows that both files are identical. Section level of system supplied section?

Bold BibTeX refs in text?

This is my bibliography set up \usemodule[bib] \setupbibtex[database={mrabbrev,bezier}] \setuppublications[numbering=yes, sorttype=cite, numbercommand=\bracketed, refcommand=num] I would have liked the in-text bibtex refs to come out in bold, so I tried: \setupcite[num][before={\start\bf},after={\stop}] but this isn't working. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something obvious here ... While we're at it, the reference compression method is a little too aggressive: I have a \cite[onething,another] and it gives me [1--2] in text ... in this case [1,2] would be better, IMO. Compression is good if you have three or more consecutive refs. BTW, how do I add the whole database to the reference list? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

I installed texlive 2004 (because I had it on a DVD, thanks NTG!). I got the latest ConText (Aug 31). The first thing I had to do was to setup the proper encoding. For example I had to specify this: \setupencoding[\s!default=8r] % or "ec", if you prefer \usetypescript[berry][\defaultencoding] or ec encoding, works as well. It didn't work out of the box unfortunately. But this seems to get me the URW fonts, not the greatest fonts. It seems the latest tex has something like updmap, whatever that is. Using "updmap --edit" I changed the LW35 setting to ADOBEkb and now I get the built-in fonts I believe. Is that correct? But I still got complaints about this one: Warning: pdfetex (file ptmbi8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading Warning: pdfetex (file ptmri8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading Warning: pdfetex (file ptmr8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading Warning: pdfetex (file ptmb8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading But document displays fine BTW. I fixed that by changing another setting: setting pdftexDownloadBase14 to false. But I'm a bit confused here. I thought Adobe had made those fonts freely available, so shouldn't they be in my tex installation? Hello people, I think I spotted a bug either in ConTeXt or in my capability comprehension. I've already done many googling and "try&fails" but the success was minimal. The typescript definitions in type-enc.tex and type-pre.tex are almost a mystery for me... Some Footnote Questions (from the Wiki)

I've been updating the Footnotes page on the Wiki, and have a few questions as a result: 1.) Footnotes in footnotes in footnotes. Are these possible? When I do something like \footnote{A note\footnote{With a note\footnote{With a third footnote.}.}.}, only the first two notes are included in the footnote block, though the number for the third footnote is generated. 2.) Footnotes as marginals. There was text on the Wiki saying that it's possible to typeset footnotes as marginals, but I can't find any references to this in the ConTeXt manual. Am I missing something? I know it's possible to do marginal notes, but those don't get footnote numbers, and so aren't the same thing.... 3.) Footnotes placed without line breaks. If one does a number of short footnotes, they get set like so: 1. One 2. Two 3. Three 4. Four Is it possible to have them set without line breaks, like this? If so, how? 1. One 2. Two 3. Three 4. Four 4.) Footnote alignment. Currently, footnotes are set so that the left end of the text of the footnote is aligned with the left edge of the text, and the footnote number hangs out into the margin. Is it possible to change this? (For instance, suppose I would like the number aligned to the text-edge, and then a fixed-width space, and then the text?) 5.) In LaTeX, there's a means to place a footnote (and generate a number and reference for the footnote) without typesetting the number in the text, in order to handle cases where the "real" footnote mechanism breaks down. Is it possible to do this in ConTeXt? 6. When I reference a footnote's number using \note[ref], I get the number typeset as a superscript. This looks a little odd to me in sentences such as "See footnote \note[ref] on the previous page" -- it would look better if the number (or symbol) were typeset in the normal font. Is there another way to reference it so as to do that? 7. What does the "location=high" in \setupfootnotes do? Thanks! - Brooks

\limitatefirstline (or slave to the wiki)

Hi all, I've tested the latest version of \limitatefirstline and it still doesn't work as expected. This is really a complex story (problem). - the clip mechanism cuts off the lowest part of some special chars (clipping graphics is easy, but I don't understand what happens here) - text is sometimes cropped at word boundaries (example 110pt), instead of beeing clipped The example file is appended and I use the latest beta. There is no timeline, so fixing is not that urgent. And yes, I've cancelled my hollidays and will live for the wiki only from now on :) wiki, wiki, wiki,.... Using newly defined sections

Hi, I'm a ConTeXt newbie. I've read the read the chapter of the manual on sectioning. I understand that it is possible to create a new type of section using \definesection and setup section but how do I insert an instance of my new section into my documents? With predefined sections I can use commands such as \section, \chapter, etc.. The reason I want to define and use a new section is so that I may use it as a substitute for LaTeX's \author. I'm publishing an academic journal for which I need to be able to include author's' names in the header and in the TOC. Defining a new section seemed to be the obvious solution, but I don't know how to put it into practice. If create a new section how do I put it to use in my documents? Any suggestions? Elliot

Start of application within a context document

Hi, If you excuse my ignorance, but I am looking for a simple example how to launch an executable (a tcl/tk script in my case) from within a pdf document prepared by context. During a presentation i would like to show some graphics which are generated through the execution of a tcl/tk script. One could close the pdf file and open the tcl/tk script, but it would be nice if one could symbolically link the script within the pdf file. Because I prepare the pdf file using context, I searched the context manuals, but didnot find a solution to this problem. Therefore if somebody has solved this already and is willing to share his/her experience I would be grateful Thanks Stephen

Hello, How can I make highlighted \type-d text? I would like \type{\thisTeXcommand[option=something]} to be highlighted in TEX style. (The question could also be relevant for the wiki, where inline text can only be "highlighted" with <code> or <cmd>, but not with something similar to <texcode> or <xmlcode>.) \startTEX ... \stopTEX makes it's own paragraph and \type can't have any arguments. Temporary workaround would be to make \hbox{\startTEX ... \stopTEX textA}textB but I have to manually determine what to put inside "textA" (so I can forget about line breaking algorithm). And another request for Taco: with option=TEX, the '%' are typeset with yellowish gray, while the actual comments remain black. How can I make the whole comment gray? Btw.: \startTEX \command % comment % every '%' is now gray % althoug only the first one starts the comments \stopTEX (After all those tricks that you Taco provided recently ... the source for code highlighting is still too complex for me to understand and modify.) no graphics inclusion

Hello ConTeCters, please, is there some trick how to suppress external graphics inclusion into PDF, just only show dummy frames instead? I would like to send the underworked doc with plenty of graphics for proof reading. With graphics it has tens of MB. I tried \setupexternalfigures[option=empty] it shows only frames instead of graphics but graphics is also included, so it resulted in no PDF file size reduction. Thanks Vit

Hi, I'm uploading a beta. I replaces a few font things, i.e. il2 and pl0 support is now replaced by a combination of regimes and using ec and qx. cropping text

Hi all, I've used \doboundtext so far, to crop my text exactly as I want it. But now I've problems with text, that contains a \underbar token. It seems, that \handletokens can't handle \underbar. The other cropping alternative, \limitatetext, perfectly works with \underbar, but it's useless for me, as it cropps off only at word boundaries. mhh.. Is there an (more or less) easy way to solve my problem? I don't need a full solution; any hints are welcome. Thanks in advice, Peter

Try this code out with: \startitemize \item \XETEX \item \PDFETEX \stopitemize I have a feeling that \mirror and itemize interfere in a strage manner, but I don't understand the underlying code to fix it. Hello, In the following example, the title color changes on the second page. How can I avoid that? In regi-il9.tex (on wiki) there are two interesting constructs (also found in regi-il1 and regi-ibm): \defineactivetoken 171 {\ifvmode\leavevmode\fi\leftguillemot\prewordbreak} \defineactivetoken 187 {\prewordbreak\rightguillemot} The two characters correspond to: 0xAB 0x00AB # LEFT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK 0xBB 0x00BB # RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK My questions are: - (Does \prewordbreak force or prevent line breaks?) - This seems to be optimized for French, but is contradictory for German (or vice versa, depending on the first question) - In most files there is only \[left|right]guillemot, no \prewordbreak. What's the proper way to handle this (and other quotations marks)? This has nothing to do with the example, but: how can kerning in (German for example) quotations be improved? With guillemots it works perfectly, but the usual quotation marks are optimized for English. Opening quotation marks are to close and the closing ones are too far away from the quotation. Installation of ConTeXt within TeTeX 3.0

I've been trying to install ConTeXt (ver 2005.08.31) within teTeX 3.0, installed from source exactly as described in http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation but have run into problems. Everything goes smoothly until I get to the section entitled 'Install the zip archive'. When I type 'texexec -make -all' I get the following error (after much other output): language : patterns da for da loaded (n=6) (/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-local/tex/context/patterns/lang-da.pat ! Nonletter. l.24 .s[ aring]3 ? I tried simply responding 'R' to continue running silently but when I come to the next step: cp -a /root/.texmf-var/web2c/* /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-var/web2c The .texmf-var/web2c folder is empty, so nothing useful gets copied. Currently, typing 'texexec --version' gives me the following: TeXExec 5.2.4 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2005 texexec : TeXExec 5.2.4 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997- 2005 texutil : TeXUtil 9.0.0 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1992- 2004 kpathsea: Running mktexfmt cont-en.fmt fmtutil: no info for format `cont-en'. kpathsea: Running mktexfmt context.fmt fmtutil: no info for format `context'. tex : unknown context : ver: 2005.01.31 cont-en : unknown which indicates to me that I should start again from scratch. NOTE: if we comment out \loadmapfile[texnansi-os-public-lm.map] then upon declaring % output=dvipdfmx pdfetex will read texnansi-os-public-lm last. I think this is an overall bug in the latest ConTeXt. Thus it appears that \loadmapfile[texnansi-os-public-lm.map] works for pdfetex (in dvi mode) but not for aleph. Is this because the etex in aleph is too old? In the meantime, is there a workaround so that aleph will load texnansi-os-public-lm.map first?
