cannot install Times (Cyr) ptb font using TexFont script under MiKTeX 2.5

Hello there, I cannot install Times (Cyr) ptb font using TexFont script under MiKTeX 2.5. I run the following command (from the folder where font collection sits) texfont --sourcepath=. --vendor=adobe --collection=timescyr --makepath --install It does copy the font source into "E:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.5\fonts\tfm\adobe" (I have Windows on E:) but says "need at most two non-option arguments" and create no tfm and vf metrics. The problem resembles "[NTG-context] TeXFont Problem" issue that was reselved by reistalling TeX to a non-space path like C:/tex, but it is not a kind of thing I want to do with MikTeX 2.5. (I tried also a trick with fake fontroot timescyr>texfont --fontroot=e:\tex --sourcepath=. --vendor=adobe --collection=timescyr --makepath --install but was defeated as follows TeXFont 2.2.1 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 2000-2004 processing aborted : unknown tex root e:\tex ) -- With best regards Vyatcheslav mailto:yatskovsky@gmail.com

Hello, Ok, now I've started playing with Cyrillic fonts seriously. 1. Antiqua-torunska is really Cyrillic but its typeface far from Times Roman. \usetypescript[antykwa-torunska][t2a] \definetypeface[antw][rm][serif][antykwa-torunska][default][rscale=1,encoding=t2a] \setupbodyfont[antw,12pt] Unfortunatelly, it seems that it is only t2a-ready typescript. Using the same trick with iwona fails. Looking through type-enc I found that corresponding typescript misses t2a encoding. Why? 2. uc-encoded fonts and accents

Hello, in enco-uc.tex there are some definitions which use "combining" accents: \definecharacter textgrave {\uchar3{0}} \definecharacter textacute {\uchar3{1}} \definecharacter textcircumflex {\uchar3{2}} \definecharacter texttilde {\uchar3{3}} \definecharacter textmacron {\uchar3{4}} \definecharacter textbreve {\uchar3{6}} \definecharacter textdotaccent {\uchar3{7}} \definecharacter textdiaeresis {\uchar3{8}} \definecharacter textring {\uchar3{10}} \definecharacter texthungarumlaut {\uchar3{11}} \definecharacter textcaron {\uchar3{12}} \definecharacter textogonek {\uchar3{40}} But this is almost useless, since those fonts that have things like "ccaron" missing (which are exactly the ones for which such kind of definitions might be useful) don't have any glyphs on those slots. Appart from that \buildtextaccent is used for "combining", so there should be no real need for using "combining accents" at that place. Creating two-column enumeration inside a frame

Hello, I have a problem with creating two-column enumeration inside a frame. If I don't use framed text command (commented here), everything goes well - in two columns. But once I uncomment those lines, the list appears pretty framed but not in columns. Since I have a lot of math formulas indeed, that's bothers me. coupling register with head

What happened to the em dashes?

I just noticed on a sample chapter sent to a customer that the em dashes are missing. What is shown is the three hyphens instead. Hi all, I want to use different headers/footers for the different section blocks. I use \setupheaderstexts, \setupfootertexts but those are global settings. What I now use is a couple of \setupheader[state=start/stop] and \setupfooter[state=start/stop] to switch off/on the (un)desired header/footer. How can I specifically set the headers/footers per sectionblock so they act only on the body matter or back matter ? Kind regards Wim

Specifically, I use this to define '\startproblem\stopproblem'. \defineenumeration[problem][location=top,text=Problem,% between=\blank,before=\blank,after=\page] I want to say \totalnumberofproblems, in the beginning of the exam, like \totalnumberofpages. selecting big bodyfont results in wrong size

Hi all, Some strange thing with fontsize is happening. In my typescript file is: \starttypescript[Chaparral] \definetypeface [Chaparral][rm][serif][chaparral][dtp][encoding=uc] ... because I want to use the 'dtp sizes' (and I'm using XeTex). For a bodyfont of 12pt is defined in type-siz.tex: \definebodyfontenvironment [12pt] [\s!text=12pt,\s!script=9pt,\s!scriptscript=7pt, \c!x=10pt,\c!xx=8pt,\c!big=14pt,\c!small=10pt] So one would expect that switching to a big bodyfont will result in a fontsize of 14pt. But when I typeset the next file: \usetypescriptfile[type-adobe] \usetypescript[Chaparral] \setupbodyfont[Chaparral,12pt] \starttext Normal size is correct: \the\bodyfontsize. \switchtobodyfont[big] Big size should be 14pt, but is: \the\bodyfontsize. \stoptext I see that the big bodyfontsize is 14.4pt. ConTeXt update deletes user files?

Hello, after updating to the latest ConTeXt release (via i-Installer on my Mac) all my custom files are gone! I put them in .../texmf.local/tex/ context/user/ and now there is emptiness :-( The installer shouldn't touch those files, right? Is there a way to recover them? I'm a newbie to ConTeXt so it took me ages to collect all the info necessary to assemble a little module that provides theorem-like environments ... and I need this so bad! Oliver

small smaller and vertical stretch

Hi, using "small" and "medium" rather than "8pt" or "10pt" gives some vertical "stretch". Very useful in some situations: \setupinterlinespace[small] \setupwhitespace[medium] But what to do if "small" is still too big? And yet the "stretch" is needed? While I can say ... \blank[.75*medium] ... this operation is not allowed for the two above. So, what to do? Steffen

strange behaviour of \definedfont['Some Name'] in XeTeX

Hello, I'm probaby misusing the feature (most robably because I just didn't take time to study how to do it properly), but it behaves really strange. In XeTeX I first did \font\f='Some Name' \f which worked OK. But when I tried the same with \definedfont['Some Name'] it resulted in strange behaviour. For some fonts, metapost has been invoked and complained, but the resulting document had the proper font plus "scaled 1000" written on the first page where the font has been selected. For other fonts it failed completely. What's actually the most clean way of including an "uc-encoded" font at a specific font size, but without the need of bold or any other "typefaces" (just for a title for example)? (Which basically means: I only want the same behaviour as the plain TeX expression above + uc encoding.) Thanks, Mojca

texmfstart problem (long time spend somewhere)

Hello, For near two years I use ConTeXt under the MiTeX distribution. Last weekend I installed the last version of ConTeXt (2006-07-21) available on MikTeX. Since this installation, the program texmfstart don't work correctly. After the command : "texmfstart texexec first.tex" nothing happen for a long time before texexec is actualy executed. I have installed on the same computer a stand-alone version of ConTexT and the behaviour is the same. The have installed a new version of ruby (version 1.8.4) and the behaviour is the same. Scanning the recent issue of the MAPS (Dutch NTG user group magazine) I encountered the interesting article about experiences with the development of luatex and friends. Especially the possibility of having protocols http:// and file:// as input source seems promising. Allow me to suggest another opportunity here: the inclusion of svn:// as a source. I myself store my important tex and metapost sources in a svn repository in order to keep track of versions and branches in an efficient manner. Others might want to do the same. It therefore would be nice if tex typesetting could directly access those repositories through the svn:// protocol too. Maybe Taco and Hans feel challenged.... dr. H. van der Meer

Hi to all, I'm typesetting a manual for a programming language. I'm inserting long excerpts from code and I have my nice line numbers as explained by the wiki. Code is inserted using \startcode\stopcode mechanism (I have two type of starttyping). I cannot understand how to refer to these code blocks. I mean, I need to have something like this: "in the code at page xxx, ...". I guess it's simple but seems I cannot solve. \startquotation, \cite and footnotes

Hi, I've been wondering whether someone (perhaps Taco?) can give me a hint on the following: 1. Is there an automated way to place citations into footnotes? So whenever I use \cite in the running text it should produce a footnote with the reference alongside the usual footnotes. However, when \cite is invoked within a footnote it should just type out the reference inline (in the footnote, of course ;-). So far I've done this manually with \footnote{\cite{key}} (which at times produced its own strange results like two footnote blocks on the same page). 2. When typesetting a quotation block I'd like to add a reference directly after the closing quotation marks. However, including the \cite command before \stopquotation places the reference before the closing marks, and moving \cite out of the \start \stop block makes the reference appear on a new line ... Through trial and error, I've been able to solve the problem mentioned below. I used \setupbodyfont[reset,modern,serif,10pt] instead of \setupbodyfont[reset,modern,10pt]. Hi, I have the following font definitions, \usetypescriptfile [type-gyr] \definetypeface [mainface] [rm] [serif] [palatino] [default] [encoding=texnansi] \definetypeface [mainface] [cg] [calligraphy] [chancery] [default] [encoding=texnansi] \definetypeface [mainface] [ss] [sans] [kurier] [default] [encoding=texnansi] \definetypeface [mainface] [mm] [math] [euler] [euler] [encoding=texnansi,rscale=1.03] \definetypeface [mainface] [tt] [mono] [modern] [default] [encoding=texnansi] \definetypeface [boldface] [mm] [boldmath] [euler] [euler] [encoding=texnansi,rscale=1.03] \setupbodyfont[mainface,11pt] I want to use the Calligraphic font font for headers etc, so I tried \definefont[BigText] [Calligarphic sa 2] \BigText test which gives me the math calligraphic fonts. How do I get the text calligraphic fonts, using \definefont? Another question which is slightly OT: Is there a free handwriting font that matches with palatino? These two excellent macro sets continue to be incompatible. Currently this is the error message I get when I do an \input eplain.tex in a Context document, using the latest eplain.tex version 3.1: -------------------------------------- (./eplain.tex ! I am able to establish Adobe Garamond as my body type with just a couple of TeXish commands. But my maneuvering though the maze of typescripts and synonymns yields no results. Hello, with the latest ConTeXt, it seems, that space around \bTR, \eTR, before \bTD and after \eTD matters. project structure & cannot find file problem

Hello, I just started playing with ConTeXt and setting up project/product/component structures. I made the following directory structure: /project /project/project.tex /project/environment.tex /project/product /project/product/product.tex /project/product/component /project/product/component/component.tex /project/product/component/subcomponent.tex The component.tex file inserts the subcomponent.tex file using the \input command. Creating a pdf from component.tex (by running texexec from within /project/product/component) work fine. But when I try to run texexec in the product folder to create the product pdf, it complains that it cannot find the subcomponent.tex What do I have to do for texexec to be able to find the subcomponent.texfile? Module for ptj

Hi Aditya, I've just played some with your module for the PracTeX journal. This is very nice to have, I'm absolutely thrilled! When I wrote for them, I just relied on a self-cooked style, but yours looks much closer to the official LaTeX template. Just two or three very small remarks: 1. You should mention somewhere that your module necessitates installing the texgyre fonts (at least pagella) + the map files. They don't come with a normal ConTeXt installation (yet). 2. I haven't really looke into the texgyre fonts yet, but is it possible to make mediaeval numbers the default? Given that they are used for page and section numbers, that would make sense, IMHO. 3. The line endings in lines 226 and 227 need to be escaped; otherwise, you'll get a spurious space in front of the abstract buffer (visible in output in demo mode). Bug: missing stopper?

Hello, playing with \defineenumeration I noticed some weird behaviour: whenever I set an enumeration to be unnumbered the stopper is mysteriously suppressed ... I searched the mailing list for this problem and I discovered that people have experienced problems related to the stopper option before. However, these appeared to have been solved. Parsing texexec output

Hi, I was fixing a bug in my AucTeX and found that at present it is difficult to parse the output from texexec. Basically Emacs runs texexec in a buffer in --batchmode, then tries to parse the output whether an error occurred and where. Unfortunately with texexec I don't get any error messages (besides the return code), so if something goes wrong, the user only knows that something isn't right, but not what it is. (It also doesn't print page numbers, either.) In comparison, LaTeX when run in \nonstopmode prints the error message normally and continues to process the file; that makes it easy to parse it, jump to the line where the error was detected and even present the user with an explanation of the error message. In order to get similar features with ConTeXt, it would be nice if texexec could be made to be a little bit more verbose in its --batchmode output. Is there a way to do this currently? Philipp

overlay problem with textext

Hi all, the attached example works with the version from 17.11.|20.11., but not with the current (22.11.06, 11:02) one. The problem seems to be in the use of textext, as it 'works' (background is visible) when I exchange p:= textext.rt(\MPstring{FunnyFrame}) ; with p:= nullpicture ; I couldn't test the current version on contextgarden (still 20.11., which works ok), so I'm unsure, if it's my messy tex tree or a general problem. the same old \column problem

Hans et al, did \column ever work or is it supposed to? I.e. I guess I should be able "jump" to the next column in \startcolumns ... \column % next column ... \stopcolumns Without the \column, it works only for longer paragraphs, but e.g. not with \startlines - I'm trying to typeset lyrics, and the column *always* breaks within a verse instead of between, even if all the verses have the same number of lines, so that it would be easily possible to balance cleanly. unic-xxx.tex glyph lists: minor bugs, questions

Hi, I've been writing a script that sifts through the unic-xxx.tex files to get a readable mapping what Unicode characters are supported using \Amacron-style names. In the process I found one bug and something that might be another bug: - the Cyrillic block (unic-004.tex) is missing an \unknownchar line for U+04CF, so that the remaining (few) glyphs are off by one - the Hebrew block (unic-005.tex) starts with a \numexpr line indicating an offset of 224 = E0; however, the first character in the list is U+05D0. So either the whole block is off by 16, starting at 0x0490 instead of 0x0500, or the 224 should be a 208 (=D0) instead. BTW unic-005.tex is the only file with Macintosh line endings. Are the unic-xxx files automatically generated or maintained by hand? Incidentally, it would be trivial now to put the list of ConTeXt glyphs on the Wiki, if anyone's interested. I wanted to use this to work towards better support for the whole range of ConTeXt glyphs with OpenType fonts under XeTeX, by reading what ConTeXt glyphs are available in a font and building a list of "\catcode`ā=\active \def ā {\amacron}"-style list for the rest. (Unfortunately this kind of list would be font-specific, but the generic alternative would be a huge list of active characters with an \ifnum\XeTeXcharglyph"....>0 macro behind it, and that would probable be quite slow.) I wonder if there is a more intelligent way to achieve this goal; since part of the logic for mapping code points into glyph macros exists already, it would be easier if there was a way to reuse that. The best way out would be if I could enable ConTeXt's UTF-8 regime while running XeTeX in \XeTeXinputencoding=bytes mode, but I haven't gotten that to work yet. Philipp

mark ii/iv

In the most recent release notes on contextgarden it is said: "This was the first version that separates between a 'mark ii' and 'mark iv' version." I guess I missed something important, but I am ignorant on the terms "mark ii" and "mark iv" version. Searching contextgarden did not reveal an explanation to me. I took a look at the source code and realized that I had misunderstood the function of \fillinfield. Thus, \fillinfield probably works the way it should, just not the way I expected it to work. enumeration, framedtext and funny...

Hi, I'm trying to make my document in ConTeXt and in I have some problem. Problem is in my environment for theorems. Every theorem has name and number. I had defined "enumeration" for them. Theorem-text is typed in framedtext, with backround. Theorem's title is defined by \setMPtext, and is typed in MPgraphic (\MPstring). I want to type also theorem's number (Theorem 1, ...) instead of "Here", but there is a problem: \MPstring{TheoremCaption} is empty. Where I'm making mistake? register with align is justification ?

Hi, once again I am in despair of the register/index. I assumed the syntax below gives a register in align=justification. But it doesn't. (It pretends to, but not good.) Is there a way to *force* justification? (Even with the space between words gets a bit large, to *some* extend.) Hi, after trying to get hanging indenting for standard paragraphs (or what you get in TeX writing \hang\noindenting at the beginning of the paragraph) and not being able to get this (without \star...\stop lists), I wonder whether it would be possible to add a "command=..." option to the \setupindenting command. I would need this to set up a bibliography where standard paragraphs should have hanging indentation (but at margin, not in margin). Thanks for your help, Pablo

Hi. Recently I have tried to support typesetting UTF-8 Korean language along with context-beta. I have uploaded related files to a temporary server for your reference (3.5Mb): http://210.94.201.157/~nomos/KTUG/context-korean-test.tar.gz But as the current unic-cjk.tex does not cover Korean Hangul Syllables area and CJK Compatibility Ideographs area, I have to edit that file every time I upgrade context. using cmbright and hfbright fonts

Hi all, I couldn't find anything on using the Computer Modern Bright font together with the Type1 versions (hfbright) so I experimented a little myself. I consider myself a ConTeXt novice, so I hope others can help me improve it. Attached are two source files: cmbr.tex and textfragment-context.tex. The latter is the text used to test fonts in the free font survey (http://www.tug.org/tex-archive/info/Free_Math_Font_Survey/survey.html) loosely adjusted for use in ConTeXt. The first file contains my attempt at defining typescripts for CM Bright and compares regular modern with CM Bright. I have a pdf output available for those who do not have the necessary font files. I'm particularly interested in CM Bright/hfbright, because of the sans serif math font which I believe is a good candidate for use with other sans serif fonts (like the Verdana example in This Way #9). Besides fixing any mistakes in my typescripts and setting things like bold math and encodings up correctly, the one thing that remains to be done (I think) is to define the math collection for cmbr. I'm not sure if something elaborate like math-ams.tex is required. hfbright has two files hfbras10.afm and hfbrbs10.afm, which look very similar to msam10.afm and msbm10.afm so maybe there's an easier way (font synonyms?) of using the hfbright AMS symbols instead of the regular AMS symbols? I think this would be a nice addition (perhaps in the form of a module) to ConTeXt. Any suggestions and help are greatly appreciated! Problems with \fillinfield

Hi, PDF fields created with \fillinfield lose their filled in values as soon as they lose focus. I have tried several different documents, including mwidget-s.pdf, with the latest Acrobat Reader on both Linux and Windows but I always get the same result. Any others with similar problems? Below is somewhat of a silly example, but it does show the problem I am experiencing. It looks like the commands inside of the postponing block can not effect the headers. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? The only way I have been able to change the headers is to place a \page[blank] at the beginning of my postponed block, but then there are no headers for the rest of the document. Basically I just want there to be no headers on any page where I postpone a block. Bug in Description?

Hello, I need to mimick enumerated lists with descriptions, as the list labels are passed to context by an external program. For this I need the text after the label indented exactly as far as the following lines. Following the wiki I set distance=0cm, but this does not seem to be honored, but setting it to a very small value does work. So I suppose it's a bug. Hi, We've gone current with the beta. Next week there will be release notes as well as the formal tex live/collection code freeze. Apart from the usual bug fixes and extensions, the most noticeable change is that from now on there are also mkii files (and mkiv as well as lua files for those testing luatex). Next year, when the TeXGyre project has released all new base fonts, there will be a switch to using these fonts instead of the existing variants, for this release, one has to load type-gyr. There has been some organizational changes to the metapost inclusion (mptopdf uses supp-pdf, while context itself uses an [to be futher] optimized version as a prelude to mkiv conversion). If you want to know to what extend luatex will influence context, keep an eye on the mk.pdf document (or read the coming Maps, TugBoat or other user group magazines) which (will) describe some experiments, history and usage. relative scaling for fonts

Hi there, I'm using XeTeX one of the features that I miss at most from XeLaTeX (from fontspec), is the possibility to set automatically the scaling of fonts so that they match the lowercase or uppercase letters of the roman font. I wonder whether there is something similar for ConTeXt. By the way, the ConTeXt uses in my view, the wrong XeTeX way to set the interlinear space, since it seems that \XeTeXuseglyphmetrics is set to 0. Probably I should be missing something, but if \XeTeXuseglyphmetrics is not set to 1, ConTeXt will set the interlinear space not by itself, but following the glyph metrics and in some fonts the font height. I guess it would be better to use \XeTeXuseglyphmetrics=1. Best, Pablo

negative indenting

Hi there, I have set \setupindenting[yes,big,first] and I would like to have all paragraphs in a given document with negative indentation. AFAIK, "first" should enable indentation for all paragraphs, but the ones after \section, \subsection or \subsubtsection are not indented. How can I make that the indenting would be negative, that is, that is not the first line the one indented, but the other ones. Thanks, Pablo

It's probably bad etiquette, so I figure that is why it has remained unheeded. I'd like to submit my second query again. I have a problem with the separator in header numbers. I want to use a different separator between chapter and section numbers (-), than between section and subsection numbers (.). So, assuming I'm using roman numerals for chapters, I'd like numering of sections to be I-1, I-2, I-3, etc., of subsections to be I-1.1, I-1.2, I-2.1, I-2.2, I-2.3, etc. Now when I use \setuphead for section and subsection blocks with different [separator=] attributes: \setuphead[section][separator=-] \setuphead[subsection][separator=.] ... it defines the separator for the _whole_ header level, not the number position within any relevant header. So I get this instead: sections are numbered I-1, I-2, I-3, etc. subsections are numbered I.1.1, 1.1.2, I.2.1, I.2.2, I.2.3, etc. Is there a way to achieve what I want to do? Thanks! Jeff

Hi all, Maybe some of yours (from the ConTeXt POV) can be interested by my PhD dissertation and my presentation (both in french)... http://www.nibua-r.org/ConTeXt/PhD/ The slides are made to work under linux with sh script to run mplayer or custom simulations... These scripts will obviously not work without the movies or my simulator binaries... Renaud

Further questions about linenotes

Hi all, further experiments with linenotes have brought up two further questions; one specific, one general. Here comes: 1. Is it possible to have linenumbering automatically reset its numbering to 1 at the top of every page? I have a dim recollection that something along these lines was asked on the list recently, but can't find anything in the archive. 2. General: I had to experiment quite a bit with the before= and after= keys of \setupnote to make them really do what I wanted. Here's what I found: a. before=\blank[1cm] % texexec will fail with an error b. before={\blank[1cm]} % does nothing c. \def\myblank{\blank[1cm] before=\myblank % works I guess it has something to do with TeX's expansion mechanism, but I found it confusing, and I think (hope?) that others will find it a bit confusing too. Is this intentional, can it be made easier for users? All best Thomas
