Bug in dowithpargument and paragraph ending in a macro

Hi, Consider this: \starttext \section This is ok I like the loose format \section why \unknown This does not work \stoptext which gives ./test.tex:8: Paragraph ended before \nextpar was complete. <to be read again> \par l.8 I suspect you've forgotten a `}', causing me to apply this control sequence to too much text. How can we recover? My plan is to forget the whole thing and hope for the best. This seems to be a bug in dowithpargument. As a temporary workaround, I can just enclose the section in braces, but it will be nice if \dowithpargument behaves correctly in this situation. Aditya

That has got me sorted for today, though it would be great to understand, at a more leisurely pace, if there is a way to do this from within the .tex file. I was experimenting with wrapping the placefigure in something that stopped the list from being written, but didn't get anywhere. Anyway, thanks a lot, this has saved my bacon for today. :-) Duncan

metafun externalfigure macro with xetex

Hi all, if i use the metafun macro "externalfigure" with xetex, there is a printed number (first externafigure prints a "1", the second a "2" right after the "1" and so on) in the lower left corner of the picture; the picture itself is shifted to the upper right, out of the bounding box. I have this effect with xetex 996p1, 997-dev, ConTeXt 17.04.07and the newest beta. Pdftex in this case works wery well. Is this a Bug in Xetex or in ConTeXt? Greetings Lutz

CMYK and spot colour confusion

Hi there, I'm trying to get to grips with all these colours in ConTeXt and MetaFun ... How to make a figure not appear in the list of figures?

Hi folks, This is probably a simple problem but I can't find an answer. I have a book with a list of figures and have been asked not to include in the list a figure which does not have a caption, even though it has a number. So the numbering needs to be sequential, but one of the figures needs not to appear in the list of figures. If I define a new float type Nolistfigure with, e.g. \definefloat[Nolistfigure][figure] then it uses its own number, so I get effectively in the text: Figure 4.11 Blah blah Nolistfigure 4.1 Blah blah Figure 4.12 when what I actually want is: Figure 4.11 Blah blah Nolistfigure 4.12 Blah blah Figure 4.13 And then in the List of Figures, I want Figure 4.11 Figure 4.13 Can anyone get me a quick pointer? As ever, this request has come on the release day for this job, so anyone able to help today would be fabulous... :-) Thanks. Duncan

what about TeXML ?

Hi, today, reading through the list archive, I discovered TeXML and the documentation of Paul Trembley. The way from TeXML to ConTeXt way clearly described, a connection between TEI (!) XML and TeXML was mentioned, and all in all it was recommended to be the link between XML and ConTeXt. Well, I have no skills in writing XSLT, thus I have no idea how to come from e.g. my TEI XML to TeXML (otherwise I would have probably tried to jump the gap directly) Does anybody know more? Does an appropriate XSLT for creating TeXML already exist? Thank you, Steffen

Fullstop too close with charter

Is there a problem with font metrics for charter? \definetypeface [mainface][rm][serif][charter][default] [encoding=texnansi] \setupbodyfont[mainface, 10pt] \starttext POMDP. Test \stoptext The dot is a bit too close to the P, almost touching the vertical line. Is there an easy way to correct this? Aditya

Law/Jurisdiction typesetting

Hi, using ConTeXt more and more for typesetting books from the field of law/jurisdiction I came across some specifics that I just don't know how to do in our beloved application: 1) Paragraphs (not all) are labeled with numbers in the margin. These "paragraph numbers" are used in the table of contents in such way: you have the content's entry (eg the section heading), then the dots, then the corresponding paragraph number, then the corresponding page number. 2) Paragraphs (not all) are labeled with numbers in the margin. These "paragraph numbers" are used in a separate "paragraph register" in such way: you have the index entry (a law's number), space, then you have the corresponding paragraph number (the text paragraph where the index was used). [But of course there is also a "regular register" afterwards, containing alphabetical listed keyword index entries pointing to page numbers.] So, how can that be done?? Yours, Steffen

Version Information on each page of text

Hi, I'd like to put the phrase "Version: Fall 2007" on each page of our intermediate algebra textbook. On even-numbered pages, I'd like to put it in the lower left corner of the page, in odd-numbered pages, I'd like it in the lower right corner of the page. I'd like it to be well below the area where footnotes are posted so as not to interfere with foonotes. Any suggestions?

acrobat reader does not open a pdf

Hi everybody, Acrobat reader 7 (linux) cannot open "doc-test-gobck.pdf" I usually include external documentation (catalogs, etc.) as a clickable link which open another doc. ("parent-doc-test.{tex,pdf}" --> "doc-test-gobck.{tex,pdf}") On those external doc, I put buttons for returning to the parent doc. I was making this thru variables for easy creation, and moreover for multiple page inserting. But now (context version: 2007.04.17) acrobat (linux/ubuntu feisty & acrobat reader 8 win xp) refuse to work (kpdf does !) Have you a better approach (for making those "sons" docs)? context on 64 bit does not find environment files

Dear group, my computer running Context changed to a 64-bit-machine. Since all my local files (including a minimal Context installation) were migrated, I tried to use this installation as usual. Even after rearrangement of paths and setup scripts this did not work properly since Context did not find environment files located upwards in the directory tree. I therefore tried to install the linux-64 minimal distribution according to the installation hints in the wiki. The same behaviour occured: environmentfiles are not found except if they are in the same directory like the context tex file. I was able to reproduce this on a second 64-bit computer. What can I do to solve the problem? Time to take over a ConTeXt project in Hamburg, Germany?

Hi, I'm looking for someone to take over long-term support for a running (paid) ConTeXt project in Hamburg, Germany. I'm currently supporting a small scientific institution who does regular publications with context, but since I'm leaving university now and changing places to start a "real" full-time job, I (sadly) will have no more time to do so. The job consists of: * maintaining the layout files and do occasionally changes * maintaining their local context installation (minimal installation on Ubuntu 6.06) * providing simple linux/subversion/scite support (nothing complicated) * (optional) maintaining the existing Word-HTML to XML converter written in python If you * have some experience in using and configuring context (installing fonts, defining layouts, getting multi-column-grid layout looking nice) * can communicate in german * know how to use subversion * can start right now (or at least quite soon) * (optional) can provide occasional local support in Hamburg then please contact me for further information. bib module and urls

The bib module has a problem with processing my bibliography files. Here is my amateur diagnosis. There are hundreds of entries in my bibliography file in which the % character is part of the url. When the bib module comes across a %, it ignores everything else on the line, including the closing brace, }. Bad things follow. Here's some evidence for my diagnosis. I tried editing the urls by replacing "%" with "\%". When the urls are written that way, everything works smoothly. But that is an undesirable solution. Among other things, it renders the url inaccurate. So, I have two questions: 1. Is that diagnosis correct? 2. What can I do about it (short of deleting the url field)? Thank you! everybody can forget my last mail. I was crazy at that moment. anyway, it seems to be true that \postponefootnote afects text flow. I use \postponefootnote in a chapter and the next chapter text flow changes if I comment out or not \postponefootnote. Hello list, I would like to implement online text search of a book I'm publishing with ConTeXt now, however, without making the book itself available online, something like the snippet view in text search on Google Books site. I don't even need snippet view, just page numbers would be sufficient for the beginning. I am not asking for complete solution, of course, rather an advice on direction in which to go. May first vague idea is following: to make queries fast I think it would be useful to obtain a list of words with numbers of pages on which they appear, something very similar to plain index. So perhaps it would be possible to force indexing engine to treat every word in text as if it was an argument of \index command and split out a list in text format which it would be easy to feed into a database. This is just a blind guess which is far from perfect by design, only something that seems easiest to implement. Please, tell me what other approaches would be more promising. Natural TABLE does not split with \placetable

Hi, I am using Natural Tables to typeset a rather long table. If I embed the table within a \placetable[][]{}{\bTABLE \eTABLE}, I cannot get the table to spread over multiple pages. The table extends over multiple pages, if I do not embed it within \placetable. Can somebody help? I would like to shrink the whitespace at the top and the bottom of a framedtext. John Schrerer Patch sizes vary and may be as small as some kilobytes or go as high as a hundred megabytes and higher ? the larger the size, the larger the change the patch is bound to do. Typically, when media, such as pictures and sounds, are changed or added instead of program, files become rather large. This is usually seen in patches designed to update or modify computer games. Unlike software designed for initial installation process, patches generally are faster to apply. Some patches may be acquired from the manufacturers and sent to users in diskettes or discs, while others may be downloaded through the Internet. Patches that are downloadable could take longer to acquire depending on the connection speed. Most patches that are designed for operating systems and software for computer servers are created to fix important holes in the security system. Some operating systems allow automatic update or semi-automatic updating that allows the continual feed of patches whenever there are changes done by their authors. A lot of people, especially those in the corporate world, decline getting totally automatic updates because there were many experiences of patches causing glitches. Some software experts also believe that allowing totally automatic updates may let software companies acquire limitless control over people?s computers. Thus, varying degrees of automation has been offered in relation to getting patches. The use of totally automatic updates is rather more popular for the consumers because most operating systems, Microsoft Windows in particular, have added them as a support tool. Its creators have also set the automatic updates for Windows as default. Some users, especially network system managers, are very wary about installing patches. They put off applying them until they have clear proof that the fixes are stable. frames and hyphenation

I encountered some strange thing with framedtext's in trying to define one where hyphenation is suppressed. The definition is: \defineframedtext[myblock][frame=off,style=\tt,width=0.8 \makeupwidth,before=\nohyphens] But then \startmyblock text \stopmyblock does not stop hyphenation. While \startmyblock\nohyphens text \stopmyblock stops it. Since I would like to have the myblock's all having suppressed hyphenation I am at a loss how to do it. Could it be that the \nohyphens in the "before" is overriden by something? It looks like, because setting lefthyphenmin and righthyphenmin zero at that point did not work either. By the way it is a bit difficult to give an exact example, because hyphenation so much depends on ones linesize and font dimensions. Hans van der Meer

Patrick et al, I also tried it on live.contextgarden.net and there it works fine. But not with my Context. I have some definitions but they did not change for more than 6 months, and comparing my setups with some of my backups, nothing has changed. The only change is that I updated Context with ctxtools --update from the Scite menu. I don't know which of my definitions or setups could cause this. I am not using \setupitemize. Hallo, I have got a problem with my the captions of my graphic combinations. How can I adjust the font-size of the caption which goes under each graphic? Problem is, that my general graphic caption is a smaller font-size ... the detail captions seem to use the default document font-size. for placing the graphics I use following code ... \placefigure [here][fig:test1] {test1 label} { \startcombination[2*1] {\externalfigure[leftTest]}{left test label} {\externalfigure[rightTest]}{right test label} \stopcombination } My captions are formatted with this command ... \setupcaptions [way=bytext, align=left, style={\switchtobodyfont[8pt]}] Thanks for your help! Hi, what is the rationale behind \setupblank[\@@klblank]% \ifdim\ctxparskip>\zeropoint\relax \setupwhitespace[\@@klblank]% \fi in page-mul.tex (columns)? It seems to me that blank=line inside a startcolumn does not work if ctxparskip = 0pt, which is the default. So when I'd like to have setupwhitespace[line] to get paragraphs separated by blank lines inside a column, I have to do this some other way?!? Patrick

I find a get a lot of whitespace around my defined descriptions. Setting \setupdescriptions[\c!before=,\c!inbetween=,\c!after=] does not much help. Is there something else that can be done. Preferably without resorting to wild guesses like "before=\godown[-10pt]" or the like. Or is there something else I fail to see. I was thinking that things placed in the margin (\inmargin,\inright, \inleft) would not take up vertical space, but it seems to do just that inside an itemize. Placing the \inright on the first item of the inner itemize seems an illogical place to me. It is, of course, not really problem because trial (3) shows how to avoid this. Still the question remains if there is some misbehaviour here in either the code for \inright or for \itemize? Labels in figures with wrong bounding box

Hi, I am typesetting a document with XeConTeXt, containing many MetaPost figures. All the labels in the figures are typeset using \sometxt{} and sometxt(). For some reasons, in the final document some of them appear horribly stretched or shrinked as if their bounding box has not been computed correctly (even after typesetting the document n times). I have absolutely no clue why that happens, but I imagine it is some strange interaction in the environment file, because if I typeset any of the problematic figures by itself in a different document with a minimal environment everything is fine. My environment file is quite long and I cannot find a short example showing the problem. The deformed labels seem to be always among those written by \sometxt (but not all of them are wrong!), while those written using sometxt() seem always ok. What may it depend upon? Nicola PS: I am aware of the interaction between sometxt() and \sometxt: I would like to point out that the labels are *not* messed up: they are the correct labels, just appearing deformed.

using a symbol from the wasy physics symbol set

I'd like to use the symbol varangle from the wasy physics symbol set. In my file I've got \usesymbols[was] \showsymbolset[wasy physics] $\symbol[varangle]$ In the PDF that's generated, I see the symbols in the wasy physics symbol set just fine, but following the symbol set table, I just see an OE ligature glyph. Texfont feature request.

Texfont is an awesome program. I just created a free and legal Bitstream Charter pseudo small caps font. (The real thing costs money so I can't redistribute it free.) But I have two problems with it in practice. 1. It is designed to work with typescripts. But when I need to use the font with e.g., pdftex I have to use updmap anyway. That means among other things I have to search for the generated map file, determine its name, and add it to updmap.cfg. And even with Context sometimes a typescript is overkill. 2. When I want to distribute a demonstration app in source code format using that font, I have to collect all the generated bits and pieces and put them in the same directory as the app. That will work. But where are all the bits and pieces? More searching. Now here is my request: add a switch that eliminates the movement of bits and pieces elsewhere so that the map file, the tfm files, the vf files etc. are all collected in the current directory. Hello, Thank you for the new beta. I have a question about project handling. I often make the same mistake -- press compilation shortcut when a NOT main file is active. So I obtain a broken pdf and have to delete it manually. Is ConTeXt so clever to distinguish between auxiliary and main files, and use the main when I ask to compile an auxiliary? Hello, I have another question too. I have a bunch of Adobe Caslon Pro font files in OTF format. In addition to Normal, Italic, Bold, and BoldItalic versions, there are Semibold and SemiboldItalic. question about macro's

Hello, I try to create a macro for processing a document tagged with some non-standard tags, like: \TAGc The title of this chapter \TAGs Here starts a new section with a lot of bla bla bla text. More bla bla. And yet another piece of bla bla. To process the tags I have defined some macro's, like this one: \def\TAGc#1 {\dosomething{#1} % the \dosomething has to do with fonts etc. \dosomethingelse} However, when I typeset the document this macro only works with the first word of the line tagged with \TAGc. Is it possible to tell the macro to process the whole line? (changing my source document is no option.) Many thanks, Jelle

How to align numerals in lists on the dot or paranthesis that follows the numeral?

At least in the U.S., it is the rule and a strict requirement to typeset vertical lists in such a way that the numerals align on the dot or parenthesis following the numeral. (even the daily violation of the rule by some of the most widely used word processors such as MS Word has not changed this old-aged convention.) I feel it must be possible in ConTeXt to do this because it is such a basic requirement and ConTeXt is used professionally. However, it's not the default behavior and I don't know which options will achieve it. (And if by any chance, this is not yet possible in ConTeXt, can anyone suggest a workaround for this, in ConTeXt of course. It is the default behavior in both LaTeX and eplain. metafont suffix problem

My knowledge of MetaPost falls short. I hope someone will be able to help me with the following problem: This is a macro along the line of the mode_def definition (see the MetaFont book, Appendix B). def count_ suffix $ = $ := incr counter_; countnames_[$] := str$; enddef; called from some other macro, abbreviated: def defineCount(expr xyz) suffix name = begingroup % among other statements count_ name; endgroup; The problem is that I would like to modify the contents of 'name' before it is used in 'count'. I tried several solutions as for example: save name; string newname; newname := str name & "extension"; count_ newname; but then newname is not accepted. The error message is: >> unknown string newname ! Equation cannot be performed (unknown string=numeric). and occurs count_->(SUFFIX0):=incr.counter_; countnames_[(SUFFIX0)]:=str (SUFFI... Directly changing name (because assignment to a suffix is possible): name := str name & "extension"; gives a similar error. referencing figures with \in

I used to place references to figures and tables in the following way: \placefigure[][fig:myfig]{Title}{\useMPgraphic{myfig}{parameters}} \in{figure}[fig:myfig] This however printed a dot instead of the expected "figure #". Changing to \at{figure}[fig:myfig] again printed the correct reference. Looking further into this I found: \meaning\in --> \protected macro:->\dohandlemathtoken {in} \meaning\at --> macro:->\dohandlecommand {at} Still, the ConText manual tells me that \in{.1}{.2.}[ref] (with {.2.} optional) should work. In file core-ref.tex at line 2118 (2007-04-17 version) I find: %\def\in% % {\ifmmode % \expandafter\donormalin % \else % \expandafter\doinatreference\expandafter\currenttextreference % \fi} But I am definitely not in math mode when calling \in. Setting background for entire header

Hi, I want to set the background of the entire header (from left edge of the paper to the right edge). As far as I could tell, there is no way to coax setupbackgrounds to do this. I can do this using layers or abuse the margin and offset keys of framed to make it cover the remaining area, but is there really no direct way to do this? Beste mensen, *Hoe krijg ik een ConTEXt file aan de praat in in TEXnicCenter (geïnstalleerd met de protext-cd)? * Na de installatie van MiKTEX, TEXnicCenter, Ghostscript en GSview with the Protext-cd, lukt het me wel een Latex file te compileren, maar Context niet. Noch het artikel van Steve Peter ( http://www.tug.org/pracjourn/2005-2/peter/peter.pdf ), noch het verhaal op http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Configure_TeXnicCenter_for_ConTeXt helpt me uit de brand. In de nieuwste Maps schrijft Frans Goddijn een stukje over MikTEX, maar over Context heeft hij het helaas niet. Paul Blaga schreef me: -for the compiler C:\texmf\miktex\bin\texexec.exe -for the command line arguments: --nonstop --interface=nl --pdf "%nm" For me, it works. Bij mij werkt dit ook niet. I am just wondering if this is a bug or feature or some lack of understanding on my part. The horizontal list turns into a vertical list inside a framedtext environment. Vertical spacing

Hello list! I'd like to be able to add vertical spacing before a chapter title on the first page of a chapter, and also I want to control spacing before and after section titles with something different than the \setupwhitespace value, which I want to keep for default spacing between paragraphs. How does one achieve this? I've tried using \blank with after= and before= parameters in \setuphead, but to no avail! Thanks all for your help, as always. Jeff

Wierd problem.

On another list a listmate proposes to print a book in two copies side by side. The page size is 5.5 x 8.5 in. He wants to print two copies on his laser printer. He wants two impressions of page one side by side on letter paper, with two copies of page two on the reverse side etc. for 200 pages. Then he will guillotine the stack making two copies of the book. But wait, it gets worse. He is not resetting the book but has a pdf file as his source. I and others suggested the usual bit of using PSUtils to set four pages per sheet and folding them etc. but he doesn't want to get into folding. He has a guillotine and a binder. He doesn't have a folder. So, given a pdf file of a 5.5 x 8.5 book as a starting point, is there a sensible way to massage the pdf or its PS equvalent in a way to give him what he wants? Figure references problem with \setuparranging

Hello, After I uncomment the code below, my figure references are broken -- \in gives ?? instead of figure numbers. \setuppapersize [A5][A4,landscape] %\setuparranging % [2SIDE] I have found some solutions in the mail archive, but even if I comment, build, and then uncomment back \setuparranging, I still get ??. I also don't understand how to use --pdfarrage option, it seemingly does nothing alone. Is there any proven solution? And can this problem be solved on regular basis? Chinese, cyrillic questions

Hello all, I have a document which which is predominately English, but contains (currently) also 8 Chinese characters and 2 Cyrillic words (in the Acknowledgement section). First, regarding Chinese: I use: \enableregime[utf] \useencoding[cyr] \usemodule[chinese] \mainlanguage[uk] \language[uk] I would expect having mainlanguage != chinese would turn all enummerations to arabic numbers. However, I still have -, =, etc. in the table of contents, in enumberation etc. Is there a simple command to turn this off? Secondly, regarding Cyrillic: Currently, I follow loosely wiki.contextgarden.net and use \useencoding[cyr] \definetypeface [russian] [rm] [serif] [computer-modern] [default] [encoding=t2a] \def\RuText#1{{\switchtobodyfont[russian]#1}} On my system (TeXLive 2007 as provided by SUSE) bitmap fonts are used as the seemingly needed cm-super fonts are not included; the system, however, has cmcyr type 1 fonts. Howto have page size to fit with image size

Hi all, I want to produce a unique metapost image which should be alone on its page and its file, and I want to have a page the size of the image, whichever this size is. Hello, A more advanced question. With default settings, ConTeXt is prone to start new page for the itemization that doesn't fit. Hello, Taco and Hans, thank you both very much. You are not less but genius. :) The patch from Taco runs smoothly. Now all system fonts I'm using are found without complaints. (BTW, I've never considered TeX seriously without XeTeX. System font support is Must Have for a Windows-minded user like me). The beta ceased creating those annoying .rli files, and now says 'dimensions of myfig.png loaded from figurefile itself'. Great! I even don't need ImageMagic anymore. Compiler plugin for vim

Hi, I have uploaded a context compiler plugin for vim at <http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1925>. With this, you can do :make filename (which can often be shortened to :mak %) and, if there are errors in the file :cl will show the list of errors. You can jump to the next or previous error with :cn and :cp. If there is no error, :cl will display the number of pages of pdf output and the time taken by texexec. texlive-context problem on Ubuntu

I'm having problems running ConTeXt on my Kubuntu 7.04 (Feisty). I have installed the texlive and texlive-context packages from the ubuntu repository with apt-get. $ sudo apt-get install texlive texlive-context Everything fine up to this point. Then I tested the principal programs: $ tex --verbose $ latex --verbose $ texexec --verbose I've made page-tests with TeX and LaTeX without problems, but with ConTeXt the "thing" is different. texexec is installed on the system, but when I try to build a test-page (a very simple one) texexec fails. The code of my test file is the same I have found on the ConTeXt Wiki: hello.tex: \starttext Hello World \stoptext That's all. The resulting screen is too long to post it here, but the last lines show this: . . . ! Hi, the following code \startMPinclusions drawoptions(withpen pencircle scaled 1mm); u := 1cm; \stopMPinclusions \startreusableMPgraphic{foo} draw origin--(u,u); \stopreusableMPgraphic \starttext \midaligned{\reuseMPgraphic{foo}} \stoptext produces a line with default thickness, not 1mm wide. Is this a bug? Or do I misunderstand the purpose of \startMPinclusions (I have assumed that it inserts the text verbatim inside each figure definition)? Hi all, I'm trying to make use of the two last official presentation modules, but with my (up-to-date with all fonts) TeXlive installation I obtain lots of font errors (I will of course send the log if asked). Is there some easy way to use this module? tia, -- Jean

All, In working through the beginning chapters of the metafun manual, I am getting a very unusual effect when I open the resulting pdf file in Preview on Mac OS X. question concerning "overprint"

Hello, my name ist Thomas. I recently did some graphics for a math book using metapost and the context-macros. The context-macros turned out to be a great solution for all the cmyk-problems concerning professional printing. But now another problem occured. When I put some elements (for example fonts) on shaded areas, the color of the shaded areas should go on beneath the fonts to prevent artefacts in printing. But it doesn't, the editor told me. This is called "Ueberdruck" in German, which would be "overprint" literally translated but I don't know if this is the correct word. I hope you understand my problem. If so, it would be nice when you could tell me if there are any options in Context to achieve what I want, it's quite urgent. I'm naturally a mathematician and no specialist in computer graphics, so I know very little about pdf. Thanks Thomas Epp
