fret-diagrams in Lilypond + ConTeXt

Hi all, I have problems getting fret-diagrams working in Lilypond+ConTeXt. The following works in lilypond \markup \fret-diagram #"s:0.75;f:1;6-x;5-x;4-o;3-2-1;2-3-3;1-2-2;" However, the following does not work in ConTeXt: \usemodule[lilypond] \starttext \startlilypond \markup \fret-diagram #"s:0.75;f:1;6-x;5-x;4-o;3-2-1;2-3-3;1-2-2;" \stoplilypond \stoptext I have ConTeXt ver: 2007.08.08 14:35 MKII fmt: 2007.8.26 int: english/english Lilypond version 2.10.5 and the Lilypond ConTeXt module t-lilypond-2007.09.02.zip The examples on the wiki works well, and the problem seems to be that \fret-diagram is written as \fret -diagram (note the space) in the .tmp file, and thus producing the error(?) ConTeXt on device with ARM processor

Hi, I have Nokia N800. It is a Linux (Debian-based) "PDA" with an ARM processor and only LaTeX package. I would like to install the minimal ConTeTt distribution on it, but I haven't found binaries for this architecture. Can I find these binaries somewhere? I like minimal ConTeXt distribution, becose it isn't too big and it works well. But if you have a better idea, how to install ConTeXt to my device, I'd like to try it. Thanks maaca

CompleteListOfFigures Question?

Dear ConTeXt Users, Currently I'm struggling with the completelistoffigures command! I'd like to generate a list of figures that only have a caption description, but no (\setupcaptions[...,number=no,....]) number. My current setup only generates the title Figures of the list of figures, that's it. However, when I change the number option of the setupcaptions command to yes, the list is generated correctly. externalfigure and uppercase extensions

Hello, I'm using conTeXt as the renderer in a XML workflow and have run into a problem with externalfigure. When a user chooses to include a PNG, PDF, or JPG image with an extension that is capitalized (or more generally, not all lower case), the externalfigure just includes a grey box like it can't find the file. The snippet below illustrates the problem. Note that I'm able to include the image by renaming the file to IMG_0103.jpg and changing the externalfigure to the corresponding filename. \starttext \externalfigure[IMG_0103.JPG] \stoptext I tried adding type=jpg and/or method=jpg to the externalfigure arguments, but the file did not compile. I found that by adding the entry "\definefileinsertion{tpd}{JPG}{\handlepdfimage}" to the spec-tpd.tex file in the context distribution, the externalfigure is able to include this image correctly. Should the mappings in these files be case insensitive? I'm sure that I'm missing something basic. Could someone please enlighten me? Cheers, Mike Santy

Hello, Believe it or not, but despite of mtxrun and other problems, luatex worked properly for me right till 9-10 update. I've re-uploaded fresh mswincontext, unpacked it, and my test file with Times New Roman font complied smoothly. Once I updated to the latest cont-tfm package, it began producing broken pdfs! And it spoils everything with any third-party font, not only Times. Help!!! Regards, Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

Hi, If I use a construction similar to: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Chapters_headers (that is, using the chapter title twice in the head), then my chapters also appear twice in the table of contents! What can I do to prevent that from happening? thanks, Thomas

xetex and external pdf stretching

Hi, I'm experimenting with xetex as suggested. All ok up to know. But I'm having a strange problem with figures. Typically I create my diagrams with Omnigraffle, export them in pdf (default setting) and reimport them in ConTeXt. Always fine. Using texexec --xtx I'm having a strange scale in vertical dimension, i.e. the figure is vertically stretched. The figure is ok, because the problem does not arise when I omit the -xtx flag. The code I'm using is trivial \placefigure{{\em Semiotiche}: produzione, distribuzione e accesso.} {\externalfigure[pipeline][width=\textwidth]} No stretching using a png instead of a pdf \placefigure{{\em Semiotiche}: produzione, distribuzione e accesso.} {\externalfigure[pipeline][width=\textwidth]} I guess it could it be in some way related to fonts (the fig is a a diagram labelled with text)? Dear Thomas, How careless I am! and sorry not to give you a sufficient information. As you said, lua!=luatex. I downloaded and installed luatex in the folder /usr/texbin. I also copied it as texlua. Now, It seems to me that luatools is working without the previous error. However, there is a problem of doing "luatools --generate" yet because I used TeXlive based on the gwTeX distribution. Hello, Curiouser and curiouser :) I've deleted @echo off from mtxrun.cmd, and what it shows: I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin>mtxrun.cmd --script cache I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin>setlocal I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin>set ownpath=I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin\ I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin>texlua "I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin\mtxrun.lua " --script cache Error in lua file loading: cannot open : No such file or directory I:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin>endlocal The texlua complains has completely no sense, since mtxrun.lua file DOES exist at that location. itemize + linux context update

hello all, generous people: I have in a file this: \startitemize[a,packed] \item uno \item dos \stopitemize If I compile it on windows, (ver 2007.08.29) itŽs ok; but if I compile it on linux ubuntu (context version: 2007.04.17) I get this ERROR: Missing = inserted for \ifnum I suposse I need to update context in linux. I've downloaded linuxtex.zip but I donŽt know what`s next. Please tell me where to find instructions. Anyway, beyond the context version in linux, is correct that error? need help for the installation of luatools

Hi, all, I have downloaded binary files(lua5_1_2_Darwin89_bin_tar). After unzip, there are 3 files "bin2c5.1, lua5.1, luac5.1". I copied lua5.1 as luatex and texlua in the folder /usr/texbin. I also copied luatools.lua as luatools in the folder /usr/texbin. I updated the ConTeXt and try to install LuaTeX. But, I got an error as following when I issue "luatools". apple: dalyoung$ luatools texlua: /usr/texbin/luatools:4183: attempt to index global 'lua' (a nil value) stack traceback: /usr/texbin/luatools:4183: in main chunk [C]: ? Interactive slides---hidden field on every page

Good morning or whatever you have now in Europe. I'm preparing my slides. Every slide is divided to three parts (backgrounds): text, header, and bottom. I've got the navigation buttons in the bottom. Now I'd like to add one more button that would open a field on the current page---a field containing the list of content. I'd like it to go to the \Topic I want to discuss and disappear. Hi, I was trying to configure teXShop so that it can run texexec --xtx I was following Otared's suggestions: http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2006/016502.html I tried a brainless practice, creating the suggested file with #!/bin/tcsh set path= ($path /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current / usr/local/bin) texexec --xtx "$1" but it didn't work, so I changed the provided paths (I'm an Unix ignorant: proceeded by nose, as we say in Italy) And I have this: #!/bin/tcsh set path= ($path /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/i386-darwin / /usr/texbin) texexec --xtx "$1" (I have mactex on macosx 10.4) In TeXShop while launching the typesetting process I'm having a white console and nothing happens. Any hints? figures using xetex

Hi to all, while finishing this: http://www.cirma.unito.it/research/alternando/photo/photoBook.pdf I was experimenting with fonts. Using xetex, I simply added : \definetypeface[Optima][rm][Xserif][Optima] \setupbodyfont[Optima] Fonts are ok (Optima is used). I saw that many tmp .rli files are generated. Apart form the increasing compiling time, the first problem is that I had to run several times texexec --xtx in order to generate them all. Is it normal? Most important it behaves strangely with layers using pdfs figures. Color is not applied, or typically they are not shown. What am I missing? how to reuse float numbers?

Hello, I am wondering if the float numbers can be reused for floats that are longer than a page. I use floats that contain program segments (source code) for a project report for my university studies. The guidelines specify that captions for code which is longer than one page or crosses page boundaries should be reprinted and the title changed to (continued). example: Program Segment 1.1: Hello World #include <stdio.h> main() { ...on next page... Program Segment 1.1: (continued) printf("hello world!\n"); } Can someone help me do this in ConTeXt? I think I can do the splitting of the code myself if needed, but I don't know how to reuse the float number. Hi, I tried to get the full present heading-number. If I am using currentnumber I am getting back only the last part of the heading-number. So I tried do implement a function like this: \def\presentheadnumber% {\doifelse{\headnumber[section]}{}% {\headnumber[chapter]}% {\headnumber[section]}% } but always the else-part is executed. I also tried to use doifemptyelse, doifnumber etc.. but as soon i am using headnumber[...] only the else-part will be executed. Can anyone help me with this problem? Or am I going a complete wrong way? Thanks

Margins around figures

Deat ConTeXt users, I am making a presentation with ConTeXt, with numerous MetaPost figures. Now, the only problem is that my white MetaPost figures don't blend well with the dark background of the screen. This isn't too good since the text labels in my figure's edges appear too close to the edge. What I'd like to know is, whether there's a way to specify some extra margin space around the figure, which would provide some more white area around the MetaPost figure. Alternately, is there an elegant MetaPost way of specifying figure margins? Oh, and my MetaPost files are in separate .mp files; I include them after converting. Thanks! Hello, \placefloat will put 'figure 1.1' or 'table 1.1' below the figures(or tables). I'd like to change figure or table to my own language. I looked into the manual, but there is no option which change "figure or table". I tried "definefloat[그림][그림들]", but ConTeXt did not accept it. Is there a way to change them? Thank you. Hi, I uploaded a new beta which may be of interest to xml lovers. The current (mkii) XML handler is based on hooking code into active < characters. This works ok but has limitations. fonts from scratch: what's the way?

Hi to all, after some "eccentric" projects (musical notation, presentations, posters...) I'm starting my first "core" project with ConTeXt. We have a review here at the university which has been published until now by a publisher. As we are having bad typography and bad distribution, and, more, we have to pay for these two services, we are moving it to the web as a series of downloadable pdfs (maybe with Lulu support). Obviously I've proposed ConTeXt. Now: - I think I can manage the project organization as I have already done it for other projects following http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Project_structure - I think I can define style, format etc using the manuals and the list archive and support But: Fonts are really a mysterious topics. Because of this facts, I have always used default ones. As far as I have understood, The Mk IV issue should simplify the situation but (I really don't want to be indelicate) this is really a horror film for a newbie: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Mark_IV I'm using TeXLive installation on a macosx (mactex: http:// www.tug.org/mactex/) So: - should I know something about the metrics and other trickery? In that case, really a picture is worth ten thousand words. - how do I know which fonts are installed by the distro? AFAIK, it seems that this is a fairly complicated topic. Which seems to be pretty bizarre, because if they are unusable, why should they be installed? Bib module and dutch commands

Hello! I have to say that I am new to ConteXt and never worked with LateX. I tried to use the bib-module for my .bib-files (which I created with BibDesk) It works fine when I am using english commands like \starttext, but if I am using dutch commands like \starttekst it just says `undefined control sequence´. Is there a possibilty to change that or do I have to stick with the english commands when using the Bib module? Thank you in advance. Tristan

Hi, please have a look at this minimal example: \starttext This is a test text\footnote[129]{for testing} with two footnotes \footnote[130]{the same purpose as fn. \note[129]}. \stoptext It would look better if "fn. 1" would be set the same type (not "1" being smaller and set high). luatex and typescripts/fonts

Hi guys, I missed some of the excitement of the last two weeks because I was away. I tested the latest versions of ConTeXt and luatex and have some problems: 1. Is there a simple switch to between luatex and pdftex? If I want to write typescripts with the new name: syntax, I'd like to have the old typsecripts as well to remain compatible. So: is there something like a simple switch \ifluatex? 2. I tested with a number of OpenType fonts from my Adobe Type Classics CD: ConTeXt Mkiv can address these fonts (which is wonderful), but it does not read the kerning information. I don't know whether this is because Adobe's kerning tables are so big (kerning appears to work with the TeXGyre fonts and Latin Modern) or because the Adobe fonts have these tables included in a somewhat different way. Will be back with lots of more question re. Greek soon! All best Thomas

odd background color behavior

I am using ConTeXt ver: 2007.08.29 19:19 MKII fmt and the pdftex engine \definetextbackground[A][backgroundcolor=red] \setuptextbackground [backgroundoffset=0pt, offset=0pt, frame=off, location=text, background=color, backgroundcorner=round] gives a yellow background and \definetextbackground[A][backgroundcolor=yellow] gives a gray background. If I run pdftex hello.tex a correct pdf file is output. Are there other modules that I need to load to use ConTeXt with a cweave file? Is there a documentation file that I missed? I am using he ConTeXt that came with texlive-2007. If there is a cweave file that produces a nice layout like cweb-scr.pdf available for download please let me know. Thanks. Background colour of included PDF images

Dear ConTeXt users, I am making a presentation using ConTeXt, and wish to use some plain images. I am running into some trouble, especially with the background colour of the image, which I wish to force. Here is some information: 1. I make the image using Dia, and export it. 2. I include the EPS directly, and Acrobat doesn't like it. 3. I epstopdf the images, they come otu well, except that they are transparent and the images with black text and lines looks bad on my dark background presentation. I partially worked around the problem by using background=screen in my \useexternalfigure calls. However, I have a combination image, where the second image comes without the white filled background. Could you please tell me a way to force the background colour of my images to white? I really don't want to convert it to PNG or something, since PNG doesn't look nice after scaling, does it? :-) Thanks in advance. Hi, during my first tries of context-programming I bounced a couple of times against a problem I am calling myself my value-copy-border. E.g. number is a register/variable that helps numbering some paragraphs. Some of these paragraphs also should be cross-linked. But the pointer gets always the value, number has at the point of the pointer - and not at the point of the marked paragraph. Context replacement for bibitem

Hi, I have done a little with Context but I am still a beginner. As I can read in the archive of this list, there is no possibility to divide the bibliography into sections by the generated bibliography. If this assumption is true, I would like to enter the bibitems into the normal .tex-file. I was also reading the doc of the context-bib-module but I couldn't find any context-replacement for \bibitem. Headings inside the bibliography are very important for my text and the advantages of bibitem would simplify my data-entering, so I would be happy for any hint/help how to realize this in Context. Problem with \starttable \stoptable and some math

Hi, After recompiling a 1-year old document I stumbled on the following (which used to work) Some of math symbols in a table environment are ''ignored'' i.e are not shown. They do work outside the table environment though. I think it has to do with some font switching in the table environment, but cannot verify this. I also tried the bTABLE/eTABLE but same result. color expansion (not colo-new related)

Hi all, I tried to seperate some style specific code to external variables. Most things work so far, but the expansion of color causes me problems. I must emphasize that this is no colo-new problem, as my code fails with the old colo-ini too. I have tried several things, but still no luck. What (expansion) magic is missing in my code? Too small { in the fourier font

Hi all, when using the fourier font I get the wrong size of the opening { in the \startcases \stopcases environment. Hello, I found it! My global settings for mswincotext work now, and here is the reason they failed before. I copied the pathes to temp dirs from the .bat file output, where they were DOS-truncated, e.g. c:/DOCUME~... Those tildes were expanded by luatex as \CCC, so that lua failed to reach temp dirs. I just wonder how intolerant it was not to warn user about this occasion. Now I'm in progress of creating an installer for mswincontext. At the moment it is a stand-alone .exe file that sets up global envinronment variables. In principle, I can even create full installer, which would be very appealing to Windows users. Streams ignore textwidth

Hi, In streams width=whatever only sets the width of the bounding box, the text still goes until \textwidth. Is this a bug or a feature? A work around is to use setups:stream:settings, but it is a bit clumsy. Lilypond MKIV, pstopdf, sysctl errors?

Greetings all, In trying to run Mojca's latest Lilypond extension with MKIV (on an Intel Mac), I've been receiving the errors after pstopdf is run, which I've never seen before: *** sysctlbyname_with_pid: sysctl failed:Operation not permitted is_pid_native: sysctlbyname_with_pid failed:Operation not permitted *** This is from near the bottom of the log file (included below). These errors do not always appear, but once they start, they don't go away. (\mainlanguage[nl], not when writing in English) One might like to treat every ij as a single letter and then convert both I and J to uppercase when asked for that. I read that Dutch keyboard includes the ij digraph (ĳ), but the Croatian/Serbian keyboards don't include those digraphs and none of the cp1250 and iso-8859-2 encodings have it, so everyone writes with "plain latin letters" - I doubt that anyone uses digraphs at all. Unicode doesn't even have place for it (http://unicode.org/faq/ligature_digraph.html) In Croatian, nj is always considered to be a single letter. (Even in foreign words, you would see "Isak Njutn" [Nj-u-t-n] or "Ajnštajn", so basically no worries about exceptions. Hello, I found that setuptex.bat (like any bat file) sets env. vars only locally in WinXp , that is, for current process. Other windows don't see them. TeXLive took another approach, of setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment keys, which act globally, and that's why it always worked well. Math align question

Hi, Is there a way to increase the distance between the columns in startalign/stopalign ? I read the Myway on math align and there are examples where one can set the distance but only for pairs of equations. In the following code I have 3 columns but they are too close together and I want to spread them out. I tried to use the distance parameter but this setting is ignored. I also experimented with the startmatrix/stopmatrix but I need the sub formula numbering. Buffers (gone) in MK IV (was: MK IV & Lilypond)

Hi Evereybody, I have written a short tex file. Then I have made a dvi file by command: texexec --dvi proba.tex. A dvi and a ps files have been made. Dvi is ok, but ps not. I have deleted the ps file. In order to make a ps file I have inserted command: dvips proba.dvi. I have received an error message: This is dvips(k) 5.96 Copyright 2005 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com) dvips: ! Couldn't find header file tex.pro. Note that an absolute path or a relative path with .. are denied in -R2 mode. and In document mp-cb-en.pdf on page 73 and in ms-cb-en.pdf on page 95 in the table hungarumlaut (\H{u}) does not appear correctly. Hungarumlaut is a doubleacute on o, O, u, and U. Hungarumlaut or doubleacute is used solely in Hungarian language. Best regards, Istvan

Dear Hans and gang, Has TeX-Gyre been released as part of MKIV yet? I was in the processing of updating my mswincontext distribution of 2007.08.07 and I noticed that cont-tmf does not contain the TeX-Gyre fonts.
