Hi there, I have the following code from ConTeXt wiki. I tried it in http://live.contextgarden.net/ and the output is correct. But when I tried it in the ConTeXt from TeXLive 2007, the metapost graph is not displayed in the final pdf file. How to realize rubytext in Context?

Math-mode is not a solution as the line-breaks with longer rubytext - but maybe it is the only way. Hints are very welcome. luatex on debian

debian (unstable,testing?) users can get a snapshot release of luatex in apt package form. This works for me, but there are a few things that needed slight adjustment, so I wanted to report them here to encourage others to start testing it. I needed to set TEXMF=/etc/texmf. Luatools doesn't seem to handle the {..} in the variables that are combined in TEXMF. Also, when it didn't find AlProTex.sty, the message indicated that it couldn't find AlProTeX.sty ('x'-->'X')! For testing, you can just set some simplified TEXMF, e.g.,: export TEXMF={$HOME/texmf,/usr/local/texmf,/usr/share/texmf-texlive,/usr/share/texmf} or you can edit /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf to simplify things like: TEXMFDIST = /usr/share/texmf-{texlive,tetex} In my case, I no longer have texmf-textex, so this became just TEXMFDIST = /usr/share/texmf-texlive Then run: "update-texmf" and "luatools --generate" You can check the TEXMF variable with: $ luatools --expand-var TEXMF More tests to make sure the configuration is working: $ luatools msam7.afm /usr/share/texmf-texlive/fonts/afm/bluesky/ams/msam7.afm Then build the format: $ luatools --ini --verbose --compile cont-en and compile something: $ texexec --luatex foo TeXExec | processing document 'foo' TeXExec | no ctx file found TeXExec | tex processing method: context TeXExec | TeX run 1 TeXExec | writing option file foo.top TeXExec | using randomseed 967 TeXExec | tex engine: luatex TeXExec | tex format: cont-en This is luaTeX, Version 3.141592-beta-0.11.2-2007092410 (Web2C 7.5.6) (./foo.tex ConTeXt ver: 2007.09.28 16:52 MKIV fmt: 2007.10.12 int: english/english [...] -- George N. Feature request for backgrounds

Hi Hans, can you provide a backgroundimage key for localframed (ot use it in framed) and fastlocalframed (to use it in \setupbackgrounds) to create something like: \setupexternalfigures[location=global] \setupcolors[state=start] \starttext \defineoverlay [Wallpaper] [\backgroundimage{1}{\paperwidth}{\paperheight}{\externalfigure[cow]}] \setupbackgrounds [page] [background={color,Wallpaper}, backgroundcolor=orange] \startstandardmakeup \stopstandardmakeup \stoptext I want to write the above example in the following way, \setupbackgrounds [page] [background={color,image}, backgroundcolor=orange, backgroundimage=cow] The same mechanism should be also possible for \framed. It should be possible to enable a image and a backgroundcolor at the same time to have a fallback mechanism for the case there is no image available or I want a colored background behind the image. I have also a few wishes for \backgroundimage command in core-box, is it possible let the graphics start in the left top corner and crop it only at the ride side and at the bottom like the default bahaviour in html. Indeed thanks to Thomas' instructions, after correcting a few details, I could install LuaTeX and typeset the file test-1.tex with the command texexec --lua test-1.tex However, the execution stops with this error message: <everyjob> \the \everyloadluacode \the \everyfinalizeluacode \the \everyjob but after ignoring such messages with the command r (meaning "run" without complaining...) I get the expected PDF file. Since this is not yet a clean and thoroughly working installation, I have not yet tried to put the install informations on the Wiki. Later next week I'll try to re-install everything anew and see whether I have well understood what is needed to run LuaTeX on MacOS X. 'TeX capacity exceeded' problem

Dear all, Finally, luatools is working(gwTeX, Mac OSX 10.4). Following the instruction given by Thomas, I succeeded to run 'luatools --generate' but I got an error when I run 'luatools --ini --compile --verbose cont-en'. There is a memory problem for the languages. Following the suggestion, I add a line 'trie_size = 400000' at the end of texmf.cnf in the folder /usr/local/gwTeX/texmf.cnf. After that 'luatools --ini --compile --verbose cont-en' is running without error and the format file is created in the folder /tmp/ luatex-cache/context/... I test it using a simple file like \starttext some texts \startlua a = 1.5 b = 1.8 c = a*b tex.print(c) \stoplua \stoptext and it was working nicely. But when I tested a sample file in the wiki, \usetypescript[palatino] \setupbodyfont[palatino,12pt] \starttext effe fietsen 2: \input tufte $\sqrt{2}$ \eogonek \sc effe fietsen 2: \input tufte $\sqrt{2}$ \eogonek \stoptext I got a fatal error. Perhaps I ought to tell what I'm expecting :-) ... Hope to create a regular (1cm spacing) grid on page, of bullets. Ultimately over the whole page. The context code supplied produces successive rows with an offset to the right. Have I missed something obvious? problem with alignment

Hi all, Playing with right alignments this morning, I discovered that \setupalign [left] ipsum in elit Duis placerat nec augue puts text *on the right*, while \setupalign [right] ipsum in elit Duis placerat nec augue puts text *on the left*. The \startalignment[left] and \startalignment[right] commands produce the same inversion. Stepping through PDF-Layers

Hi, I want to animate layers in a pdf like we can do at the moment with fieldstacks to show always the next picture after the click on a button. debian: itemize start=0

Hi, on debian testing this small file \starttext \startitemize[n] \item one \item two \stopitemize blahblah \startitemize[n,continue] \item three \stopitemize \stoptext gives an itemization that starts at zero, plus the continue does not work either (context version: 2007.09.28 16:52 (/usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base/context.tex)). Any hints or preliminary solutions greatly appreciated. P.Link

typescripts: where are my $\dot s$?

Hello, My $\dot s$ and $\ddot s$ have disappeard, or rather: they have turned into some weird lines. What exactly is wrong with the typescript below? If I comment out both [rm] and [mm] then it works, but I get bitmap cm fonts then. Hiding PDF-Layer

Hi, I want to include PDF layers in document and the should be hidden by default, the current behaviour is to show all layers I defined in my document and this should be later by the user and not when I open the file. Problem with chemistry in display mode

Hi all, The following example with the chemical module complains that "! Argument of \mtharrowfill has an extra }.". ----------- \usemodule[chemic] \starttext $$ \chemical{2H_2,PLUS,O_2,GIVES,2H_2O} $$ \stoptext ----------- The result pdf looks fine, though. The annoying problem only occurs when there's an arrow "GIVES", and only in display mode. I am using ConTeXt 2007.08.24, and the complete warning message is ----------- ! set headings in the margins

Hello all, I'm a total newbie Context user trying to do something that is apparently way beyond me. I'm trying to set up a conceptual three-column design grid. The idea was to use the two columns on the right for body text, the column on the left for margin paragraphs, and the full three-column spread for headings. The easiest way I could find to set such a thing up was this: \setuplayout[backspace=3.083in, leftmargin=2.083in, leftmargindistance=.25in, width=4.417in, rightmargin=1in] where "leftmargin" represents the leftmost column and "width" represents the other two columns (plus gutter). So far so good. To get my heading to stretch across all three conceptual columns, I thought I'd use something along the lines of: \start \startlocal \setuplayout[...] \stoplocal \section{This heading was supposed to start at the left edge of the left margin and wrap at the right edge of the text area} \stop where [...] would eliminate the left margin and margindistance and re-allocate that space to the text width. However, I haven't yet found any [...] that does the trick. Whether my approach is basically right or totally wrong, I'd love to get guidance on the best way to typeset a heading across both the margin and the text area. I'm aware that it's trivial to make section numbers appear in the margin; this is not the solution I'm looking for, though. Thanks for your help, Aric

nesting \startitemize

hi there, context, just as latex can nest \startitemize, the context manual says max level 4. by default context uses the symbols for these 4 levels o level 1: bullet -- level 2: dash * level 3: asterisk > level 4: triangle it is very easy to change these per the manual. but how can i make \startitemize use ordered lists by default? this is sometimes more useful for scientific works... e.g. latex by default does: 1. arabic numerals (a) letters i. roman numerals o bullet (ok, the 4th one isn't very logical in latex either...) and another question, how can make \startitemize[a] do "(a)" instead of "a." ? -f -- first came reality. then there was wolfenstein 3d...

After that I followed the instructions given by Thomas. Dear Thomas, Mojca, and Otared, Thank you for the instructions. I think that I followed the instructions of installation without problems. But I have a problem running luatools. A few week ago, I succeeded running luatools --generate, but not luatools --ini --... after making .luatex containg variables like TEXMF, TEXMFCNF, etc. I removed gwTeX and reinstalled MacTeX, I did the same steps of installation and I got the errors. At this time, even "luatools -- generate" didn't run correctly. It is ooking for the wrong folder. I tried "setuptex"(copy setuptex to the binary, and chmod 755 to run), but it asked me to "provide a proper tex directory like / something/tex" It seems to me that luatools are not able to get the texlive home dirextory. Hello, Years ago I installed TeXLive with ConTeXt - it works fine until I reinstalled my Windows and changed drive structures. So, I wanted to refresh my installation with newest MikTeX. After that I have a problem with polish fonts - in older version I have used: % --translate-file=cp1250pl \setupbodyfont[plr,12pt] \mainlanguage[pl] \language[pl] and it worked fine. But with current installation I have missing polish characters (all) within these settings. After hours of searching the web I have found setting: \enableregime[cp1250] and it works. Almost. I have found that using with \setupbodyfont[plr,12pt] makes replacing of polish character ± -> ¼ (at least). If I remove \setupbodyfont[plr,12pt] I have problem with upper Greek letters in math mode - all are missing. With setting above is fine (except this ±-¼ problem). If any thread with the same problem? I could see similar posts but I am not sure if root of the problem is the same - sometimes proposed solution is quite complicated for not advanced user ;) Maybe some polish user more familiar with ConTeXt had the same problems and can help? ;) PS. Of course I have made: texexec --make en texexec --make --language=pl --bodyfont=plr en after installation -- best regards ml.

Problem with generated PDF

Hi, I'm trying to send my resumé to people I know as a PDF file created using Context (the minimal version on Pragma site, running on Ubuntu linux). However, many of them (but no all) say they can't open the file. What are the possible causes for that, except e-mail problems? Thanks, Maurício

Dear all MikTeX fans, Just to let you know: MikTeX 2.7 beta 3 should work OK with ConTeXt & XeTeX (with yesterday's ConTeXt update). I have experienced some problems with fontconfig & admin rights, but in general it could or should be OK (I didn't try the very latest version). If you experience any problems, they should be reported. Mojca PS for Hans: the -tcx flag removal has been implemented at exactly the right moment, since it doesn't work on MikTeX under windows.

In my experiments with luatex, there's one thing that may be surprising for many users: we have come to expect that the characters ` and ' in our input files map to single left and single right quotation marks. luatex just typesets them "verbatim," so to speak. It converts the combination `` and '' to double quotation marks, however. So my question: wouldn't it make sense to convert the single marks as well? (And please don't tell me "Oh but you should use \quote {} instead of ` '." I know that, but I guess that many users have hundreds of old documents where they use `'. Moreover, ' also creates the apostrophe character, which cannot be avoided.) Best Thomas

I'd like to typeset equations like these: <some formula> (S1) <another formula> (S2) >From the documentation, I can see how to produce labels such as "1S", with the "S" following the equation number, but I don't yet see how to make the "S" come in front. Since there are only two such equations in the particular document that I'm working with, a brutish one-off solution would suffice. Dear Hans, Thank you for your concern. There is no non-ascii character in folder names except ~/Documents/. And the TeX directory is /usr/local/texlive/{2007, texmf-local}/... They said that it was good in their system. Finally Jonathan found that it was related with my OSX(OSX korean version) even though I put english at the top priority in the preference panel. He installed korean in his system to locate the problem and removed the problems. Is this problem related with my OSX? I hope that the line 1108 gives you a clue of my problem. Thank you. Hi, I'm quite new to ConTeXT, so excuse me if the solution is obvious. I'm trying to typeset a document with three columns which contains _a lot_ of graphics, most of which are pretty small, about one third of a column. Unfortunately, while \placefigure[left,hang] works fine with one column, the text doesn't float around the picture when using two or more columns, so when I do ------ \starttext \startcolumns[n=2] \placefigure[left,hang]{none}{\externalfigure[somepic][width=1.6cm]} sometext \stopcolumns \stoptext ------ "sometext" appears in the second column, instead of next to the figure in the first column. To get an impression of what I want to achive you might try the following link: http://213.239.210.141/cgi-bin/lex.pl?titel=David%20Lynch&db=Berlin&id=58,1… While this comes close to what I mean (it's done in LaTeX), there are some limitations in LaTeX which make the job very painful, one of which is that it's impossible to have floats in columns for larger pictures that span one column (this works fine in Context). Am I just missing something? Ok, if that was too easy, here is the tough problem: *Actually* I would like to let the small pictures float _within_ the paragraph, so that if, say, the paragraph starts three lines before the end of the column, the picture would be set after the first three lines of the paragraph (and thus in the next column). I've experimented with writing \pdflastypos to logfiles, analysing them with a perl script, changing automatically the TeX-File and rerunning latex for days, but the results are ... well, ok, but not perfect. Hi all I'd like to try to tell bib-mod to - fill in a vertical space between the entries in the publication list (the distance parameter did not help); - format the author's name in the cite as small caps (I managed to do it for the list, but unfortunately stayed unsuccessful for the cite). Hello, Let me ask a few questions: 1) When "big things" will be regenerated? I'm still waiting for mswincontext with updated binaries. 2) What is the difference between mswincontext and mswintex packages? 3) If someone made mswincontext to work with latest updates, can he or she post how? Hi in a thread "Page numbers at empty pages" in the beginning of September I got a solution for the empty pages. But if I want empty headers at the beginning of the chapter it does not function: \setuphead[chapter][header=empty] \setuphead [chapter] [page=yes, before={\ifodd\realpageno\else\page[empty]\fi}] How can I combine these two options? Completelistoffigures, help needed!

Dear ConTeXt Users, Last week I posted a completelistoffigures question, but unfortunately nobody responded to it! That's why I give it another try, because I don't know how to tackle this problem. I'd like to generate a list of figures that only have a caption description, but no figure (\setupcaptions[...,number=no,....]) number. Using the setupcaptions command in the preamble with the number=no option yields only the title Figures of the list of figures, nothing more! However, when I change the number option of the setupcaptions command to yes, the list is generated correctly. But I don't want a figure number to appear in the caption of a figure! The figures appear throughout a book I'm currently writing using ConTeXt. Is there a way to accomplish the desired effect using the completelistoffigures command? Please can anybody give a hint! SciTE under Windows and Metapost

Good morning (or whatever you have in Europe now). Two or three week ago I've installed the minimal ConTeXt distribution under Windows. My first use of TeX under Windows, many thanks for the distribution, it's great! However, when I try to compile a metapost/metafun source from the SciTE editor, it fails. It tries to run mpost directly, and it's not found. I can run texmfstart texexec --mptex ... in the SciTE's command promt, and it works, but it's annoying. Can I somehow reconfigure the SciTE to run the metapost properly (I mean to run texexec --mptex)? Many thanks. Michal Kvasnicka P.S. Hans, would it be possible to add the Metafont into the minimal distribution? I like it so much I'd like to make it my major distribution even in Linux, but I need the Metafont since from time to time I still use some bitmapped font (like Concrete Math). Many thanks.

luatex "success story"

Hello all, Let me share my luatex "success story". I teach computer science, and current topics I deliver are Numbering Systems and Data Representation. Yesterday, I needed to prepare about twenty test papers with 10 questions per a paper. Examples: "1. convert Dec 36 into Hex", "2. convert Bin 10010101 into Dec", etc. The wording of every question has not to be changed through papers, only numbers had. Instead of filling in numbers manually, I took more intelligent approach and (with Hans' help) wrote simple lua scripts to generate random numbers right inside my document: % question involving random decimal number Convert \ctxlua{n=math.random(30,60) ; tex.print(n) ;}\low{10} into Bin. % question involving random binary number Convert \startluacode for c = 1, 16 do n = math.random(0,1) tex.sprint(n) end \stopluacode\low{2} into Hex. and so on... I specified the lower and upper limits as two arguments of random function, and that was very easy indeed. Then I copied my finished test text and pasted it many-many times. (It was probably not very wise approach, but I'm not familiar with looping TeX commands at the moment.) Luatex did the rest of the job perfectly, and in minute I had test papers with identical questions but all different figures! I only had to cut papers apart and hand out to my students. How to include animation into pdf

Hello All, I made a little animation with Asymptote (http://asymptote.sourceforge.net) which is self contained in a single pdf. The reason of using Asymptote is, that it produces a single pdf without having to combine the resulting pdf's files myself. I now want to include this animation into my main document with the help of \externalfigure[animation.pdf] \setupcolors[state=start] \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext \externalfigure[animation.pdf] \stoptext Alas I don't see my animation, to be honest I did not expect it to work, but I thought I give it a try. Hi, Again I'd like to ask you some help. Since I have no idea what is wrong in my TeX(gwTeX), I tried from the beginning. I removed installed gwTeX, and reinstalled MacTeX-2007 package. After that I run "luatools --generate", then it is not working properly. Hello, Hurray!!! The recent Windows minimals work fine for me! Thank you, Mojca, for showing a hidden place in the garden! :) And my a kind of installer works too, how nice! :))) A few words about my 'installer' (maybe someone is interested). It does the same job as setuptex.bat, but sets variables globally by writing into registry instead of dos box. So I can call binaries from any application and it all works!. (Remark: merely setting the PATH variable is not enough, dozen other are needed. Vars were typically defined in texmf.cnf files, but I was surprised to find that those files are explicitly ignored by luatex. ) My next step is to create 'real' installer for Windows. I've discussed this idea several times here and feel that people need it (I do :) My vision of the installer is: install-and-forget on any Windows machine. Target audience: novices. It will include mimimal distribution (56Mb), install or require Ruby too (not included in minimals?). This installation will NOT be able to coexist with MikTeX or TeXLive, because settings will clash. That's all news and thank you all!! Best, Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

Publication layouts

Hello All, I am using the bib module to generate references. The manual tells me that the publication layouts are defined in the bibl-xxx files. I've got several of these (bibl-ams.tex, bibl-apa.tex, bibl-num.tex etc) so how do I tell which one is being used? (They all look the same to me!) My supplementary question is: why doesn't the layout for a "book" type print out the "edition" which I have defined in the publication definition? I really want to change the layout of the "book" type to include the edition immdiately after the title in the same font. Thanks, Richard Stephens

making formats troubled

In This Way #12 of august 2007 I read on page 1: Since you update, make sure to remake the pdfTeX and XeTeX formats: texexec --make --all --pdftex I updated to 2007-09-10 and then an error with message: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.141592-1.40.5 (Web2C 7.5.6) (INITEX) \write18 enabled. (/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/web2c/natural.tcx) entering extended mode ! I can't write on file `cont-en.log'. (Enter the null string to re-try, or <eof> to exit Default file extension is `.log') Where is it that the file cont-en.log will be written? And how can I change this location systematically (or can it be changed) to a place under my home directory? Maybe the problem is that I install my formats locally under a user name not being super user or system administrator (just a simple security precaution). Is the texexec script assuming here write rights need not in generally be granted to the script executing user? If so, can the script be adapted. By the way, cont-tfm.zip comes with script files not having a+x executing rights. It is a bit of nuisance to change these everytime an update comes along -- quite frequently thus. split table widows/orphans and splitting threshold

Hello, I'm using ConTeXt as part of a XML -> PDF workflow for technical documentation. These documents often have large tables, so I am using "placetable[split]" for table placement. While placetable[split] works as advertised, the output quality often suffers. One of the issues that I've found is that you'll often see a table with one row on a separate page from the rest of the table. Is there any way to control table orphans and widows such that there will never be just one (or some arbitrary number) rows of a table split across a page. Another feature that I think would be useful is the ability to set a split threshold for a table. In my use, tables that are less than 1/3 to 1/2 page should probably be included as a float (i.e., not split), whereas tables larger than this would benefit from being split. Is it possible to add a new placement option for tables that includes a splitting threshold? I would add this as part of my XML->TeX transform, but I don't think the rendering path has enough information to know how large table rows will be when rendered. Any thoughts? Cheers, Mike

Hi there, I am new here, so greetings. My name is Edd and I am experimenting with context as a replacement for pdflatex when I do my dissertation next year. I am using texlive 2007 on OpenBSD which includes context. I am probably now going to ask some really dumb questions.. Here goes. --- A) I am trying to get a logo to appear in the top left of every page. I have already discovered that I can include a graphic like so: \externalfigure[shift] This works just fine However if I try to define a logo like so: \definelogo[logo][top][left] [command={\externalfigure[shift]}, state=start] I am presented with this error: layout : calculating logospace <./shift.png> figures : dimensions of shift are determined externally (./template.tuo ! Undefined control sequence. l.11 \t hisissectionseparator{-} Specifying a height and width does not help either. --- B) Is there an equivilent to the RCS package for latex. Basically it parses version control tags from CVS/RCS. --- C) Is there a book on context (apart from the PDF on the main website). What other documentation exists. The spacing between a formula and its upper texts is not treated well when I tuned with some indent things. merging data from four files in one document

Hi all, I try to merge data from four files in one document. The source files are simple text files, each with 420 numbered lines of text. I have created a simple natural table with cells for the different pieces of data. I would like to make one document with 420 tables, each with the right data from the four source files (so Table 1 with data from line 1 from file One and line 1 from file Two and line 1 from file Three and line 1 from file Four, and next Table 2 with data from line 2 from file One and line 2 from file Two et cetera...) indent and blank question

hi there, i am working on a book format document using: \setupindenting[medium,yes] so the parapgrahps have no whitespace between but the first line of the next paragraph is indented. as is customary, i would like to start a new "part" (lacking a better word) of the same chapter without a title, unrelated to the previous text but not warranting a new chapter. some books put some symbols inbetween these "chapter parts" like three stars or something. if a put a \blank and start a new paragprah, it gets indented. i know i can use \noindent to get what i want, but my question is, is there something more "automatic", a space command which makes the next paragraph unindented or something? or for example if i wanted to put the 3 stars there, could i redefine subject or subsubject to output these _and_ make the next paragprah unindented? -f -- the golden rule: he who has the gold makes the rules.

externalfigure rotation

Hello, I'm looking to rotate an externalfigure inside of its bounding box in increments of 90 deg. Its real easy with 0 and 180, you can just do: \externalfigure[blah.pdf][width=5.0in, height=2.0in] \rotate[rotation=180]{\externalfigure[blah.pdf][width=5.0in, height=2.0in]} Both commands result with an image that is 5.0in wide and 2.0in tall. But the problem comes when rotating a externalfigure at 90 and 270 degrees (or more generally, anything besides 0 and 180). The rotation is applied to the whole bounding box instead of rotating the picture within a bounding box. The following images will be rendered 2.0in wide and 5.0in tall. \rotate[rotation=90]{\externalfigure[blah.pdf][width=5.0in, height=2.0in]} \rotate[rotation=270]{\externalfigure[blah.pdf][width=5.0in, height=2.0in]} Are there any plans to add support for specify an externalfigure's rotation within its bounding box, similar to this: \externalfigure[blah.pdf][width=5.0in, height=2.0in, rotation=90] Cheers, Mike

I'm not having trouble with the rotation pivot point (i.e., placement), but instead the order in which rotation and scaling are applied to a figure. I am wanting to rotate a figure within a defined bounding box. Mojca was kind enough to point out the following technique. \scale[width=5in, height=2in]{\rotate[rotation=90]{\externalfigure[yourfig]}} It creates a bounding box 5 inches wide and 2 inches tall, rotates the figure 90 degrees and scales the image to fit in the 5x2" bounding box. This approach meets my needs except that the scaling is applied non-isomorphically if both dimensions are specified for the bounding box. I'm now trying to figure out how to optionally scale the image to fit the bounding box while keeping the same aspect ratio. Any thoughts? Cheers, Mike

Thank you, Hans and Mojca, for replies. The story started in Septemper, 10, when I updated cont-tmf files for my mswincontext. I did it many times (once there was new update available) but this time I'm gone into trouble. Context started producing broken pdfs for every document with third-party font. I spent many days in trying hard to fix the issue, but nothing was helpful. I was suggested many ideas from the community, until Hans and Taco noticed that "the latest cont-tmf is not in sync with binaries"! How could I ever know that, if these files were posted on current CONTEXT distribution page? My further attempts to update luatex binary alone did not succeed. I was very angry. Now I wait till Owners "regenerate the big things" and I can get proven worked version for Windows. Hope it will be soon. -- Best regards, Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

\MPcolor bug with LuaTeX

Hi, colors defined in gray values give a inverted output in MetaPost with the \MPcolor macro. placing movies

Placing a movie with the following code places the static overlay a bit (too far) to the right, spilling it on the right side out of the frame: \useexternalrendering[sharkfilm][video/quicktime][shark.mp4] \defineoverlay [shark][{\externalfigure[shark-film][width=\overlaywidth,type=jpg]}] \starttext ... \midaligned{%\framed[offset=0pt, strut=no, background= {foreground,shark}]% {\placerenderingwindow[movie][sharkfilm]}}% Is there some spurious space in the code? Perhaps a missing % at the end of a line? I could not spot the culprit in the code, but I might have been looking in the wrong places. Then as an additional question: When running the movie a thin white frame line appears around it. I find it annoying but did not find out how to get rid of it. Nor have I been able to change the background color locally (when leaving out the external figure in the overlay) or get rid of the text "Screen" that appears. I found a macro \setuprenderingwindow but did not find out about the settings it understands. Can someone enlighten me? Hans van der Meer

How can I get correct alignment? I tried to include \starttabulate \NC #1 \NC #2 \NC\NR \stoptabulate in SectionCommand, but then the background extends too much above and below. I'm sure there is an easy solution? You should take a look at Jonathan Fine's TeX daemon project texd (http://sourceforge.net/projects/texd) if you haven't already - it runs as a pipe (unix) and only loads formats once; it would take a little bit work to get it going reliably with ConTeXt, especially to do so in a way that is easily updated when a new ConTeXt is released, and I'm not sure if Jonathan is still actively working on the project. But it demonstrates an effective approach, which works with Plain (and LaTeX I think). Duncan

Interactive slides---hidden field on every page

Every slide is divided to three parts (backgrounds): text, header, and bottom. I've got the navigation buttons in the bottom. Now I'd like to add one more button that would open a field on the current page---a field containing the list of content. I'd like it to go to the \Topic I want to discuss and disappear. Greek in luatex

Hi all, I've been experimenting with my Greek stuff in luatex, and I think I'm making nice progress. Things pretty much work with Unicode input, and as soon as the kerning problem is solved, I'm very optimistic. Two questions came up for me; I assume the answers are straightforward, but couldn't find anything: 1. How can I remap single characters? Let's say that we have a Unicode character in the input stream that maps to 0x03c3, but I want it remapped to 0x3f2, how can this be achieved? 2. Similarly: if I want to support the legacy input method babel, I need to remap the input stream to the Greek characters (question 1) and also need to feed the font some ligature rules, such as: the combination >a needs to be combined into the character 0x1f00. Recommendations for Speed?

Hello, I've been perusing the list archives for a couple of days now, and reading up on articles (such as Hans' regarding optimizing in TeX and eTeX) to find guidance on a handful of decisions. Our company makes a web-based publishing solution called MemoryPress.com that uses conTeXt for on-demand creation of PDFs which are then converted to jpeg format for display in a web browser. We are currently looking into ways to speed things up and since many of you are far more qualified than I am in this area, I wondered if you might advise me on the following: 1. Is there a way to keep TeX in-memory (i.e. as a server or daemon process) so that it doesn't have to load and reload fonts and the environment? Our system makes repeated requests for typeset documents and we are wondering if there's a way to remove the overhead of re-running pdftex. 2. Among the many different command-line TeX options, what might optimize for speed? I've done some rudimentary benchmarking and found that executing etex (without conTeXt) is much faster than texexec, and wondered if there is any advice in this area. Is there any way to shave off some of the overhead of using conTeXt? 3. I've noticed that there is some kind of caching going on (tui/tuo files?) that helps speed things up after the first run. How can I best take advantage of this facility? What kinds of things will require TeX to start from scratch, vs. use some or all of this cached information? 4. Windows Installer for MsWinContext

Hello, I'm back with my idea of installer for mswincontext distribution. I successfully use my local (post-install) version , which simply sets env. vars, but I feel there is need for more. Anticipating new mswincontext build, I can implement the installer for it using free Inno Setup software. The controversy is about setup file content. I see it as whole mswincontext, because it is declared as minimal distribution (so, nothing can be thrown away). However, I was suggested on this list to make some parts downloadable on demand, so I need to ask: what parts to make? In general, I believe that if classical Windows installer for ConTeXt were available, it would gain more popularity and appreciation. Of course, I'd like to hear from Hans and Taco what they think about it, and whether they dare to facilitate this. Best, Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

bib module fails to produce publication list under certain conditions

I recently came across an unusual error with the bib module: depending on the section structure of a document, the publication list is sometimes not produced. I've attached a simple document and a one-entry bib file that illustrates the error. If either the second section of the subsection is commented out, the publication list is produced; if both are uncommented, the publication list is not produced. What might be going on? Hi Hans and gang, For a future ConTeXt, would it be possible to add support for the --back option for pdfopen/pdfclose? See http://magic.aladdin.cs.cmu.edu/2005/07/15/pdfopen-and-pdfclose/ This will allow you to automatically return to the page of the pdf you were working on at the moment you close it. There are some caveats for working with mutiple pdf's but it's a nice feature to have. Thank you, Thomas, Arthur, and Taco, I checked texmf.cnf. There are two texmf.cnf gwTeX/texmf.cnf ---> there is no code for the memory setup, it just describe the TDS structure. gwTeX/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf ---> trie_size = 400000 gwTeX/texmf.local/web2c/ no texmf.cnf Gerben made other cnf file(he said that it is for the context). gwTeX/texmf.pkgs/web2c/{context.cnf, natural.ctx} ---> trie_size.context = 500000 The result of "kpsewhich texmf.cnf" is /usr/local/gwTeX/texmf.cnf. And "kpsewhich --expand-var = '$TEXMF' shows the directory system of gwTeX. At this moment, I don't know what I can do. I'll test it more after changing the memory setup. Thank you again. I'd like to use a colon-equals sign symbol to indicate a definition. According to The Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List, this symbol is available in the txfonts (LaTeX) package. However, it seems that the txfonts support in ConTeXt doesn't contain that symbol. And, in any case, a search for \coloneqq on the wiki gave no results. Perhaps the symbol I want isn't called coloneqq in ConTeXt, or perhaps the symbol is currently missing. How can I get this symbol in my ConTeXt document?
