Bug in startalign

Hi! I (presumably) found a bug in the recent math changes of the latest upload. If a cell of the startalign environment is empty, something internally to the macro seems to be breaking. If a Font Has Ligature Glyphs But No Feature?

I downloaded something that purports to be Century Expanded from fontsgeek.com. Although the font has fi and fl ligature glyphs, it does not have a ligature font feature and ConTeXt does not use those glyphs. Aside from purchasing a real font product from Linotype at enormous expense and hoping it is better equipped, is there a way to coerce ConTeXt into using the ligature glyphs for fi and fl?

How to setup a headertext in a doublesided document in a cld?

Hello! I tried to setup a headertext in a context-lua-document. — No problem for the singlesided version, however hoe to pass the info for a double sided version? Unfortunately the cld-mkiv manual contains an example for a singlesided document. It ried context.setupheadertexts({ function() context("\\bf”) context.labeltext(monthname) context("\\hfill”) context(year) end}, {function() context("\\bf”) context.labeltext(monthname) context("\\hfill”) context(year) end}) but this is apparently not the good approach. Metafun : save memory content ?

Dear list, I’m doing animations in MetaFun, by simply using \startMPpage (…) \stopMPpage for each frame of the animation. Here is an example: https://youtu.be/yhxUbVQx9Uo (please note you can watch it in HD by adjusting the setting in YouTube). This works usually great, but when the number of objects to draw by page is large, the resulting pdf file could be huge, several gigabytes sometimes. Such huge files are difficult (sometimes impossible) to convert in jpeg files (I’m using Image magick for the conversion), necessary to do a mp4 movie. One solution is to do several pdf files, for example one by second; with this option, I can do 60 files of 30 pages, for an animation of 60 seconds (1800 frames for 1 minute). Everything is smoother this way, quicker to convert files. But in order to do so, I have to be able to describe each frame of the animation with the same set of instructions; so the position of an object at time t is described by an equation for example. But this is not always possible. If the animation is based on a random process, the position of an object at time t depends on his position at time t-1. I can still use this preceeding strategy by simulating the past at the begging of each second, starting with a unique random seed. So for example if I work on second 9, I begin by calculating the past from frame 1 to frame 240 (8*30) and then simulate time 241, draw frame 241, simulate time 242, draw time 242, etc.. This could be complicated to do, but is feasible. The drawback is that more I advance in time, the more computations I have to do at the beginning of each file. So to simplify things, one option would be to be save the state of some variables at some point in time, say t, in order to be able to access these informations at time t+1. So the strategy would be : % File second1.pdf for frame =1 to 30 : simulate position of objects ; draw the frame ; endfor; save the position of all objects ; % File second2.pdf Read (access) the position of all objects from second 1(after frame 30); for frame =31 to 60 : simulate position of objects ; draw the frame ; endfor; save the position of all objects ; Etc... Does someone has an idea of how to do such a thing ? I can read text file in Context with no problem and integrate them in the animation process with \startMPinclusions (…) \stopMPinclusions, but I did not find a way to write information from MetaFun to a text file. Is Lua the solution ? Thanks for any help ! Fabrice.

mframed and alignment width

Hello everyone, I'm using \startaligned with pairs and a distance to represent inference steps, one per row. Now I would like to sometimes add a vertical bar to the left of the rows and one below the last row. I was able to achieve this using \mframed, but now the contented inside the framed box doesn't span the entire text width. New math additional requirement for font definitions

Dear list, I've come across that the new math (which by the way looks really nice) requires some additional properties to be set in the font definition. If I take the example file provided by Mikael and add the following lines \usetypescriptfile[alegreya] \setupbodyfont[alegreya,11pt] It fails with the following error message: "tex error on line 16 in file /Users/aleks/Desktop/Test Context/someformulas.tex: Math error: parameter 'limitbelowbgap' with id 36 in style 0 is not set" Libertinus works fine by adding the following two lines \usetypescriptfile[libertinus] \setupbodyfont[libertinus,11pt] Could someone enlighten me? Bug in placeformula

Dear Hans, dear Mikael, In my experiments with the new math engine, I noticed that there is an issue with \placeformula when one sets the location of the numbers on the left: the number is one line above the formula. Here is a minimal example: % begin bug-placeformula-left.tex \setupformulas[location=left] \starttext \placeformula \startformula a^2 + b^2 = c^2. \stopformula \stoptext % end bug-placeformula-left.tex Moreover, in some environments (such as enumerations) the bug destroys completely the flow of text but I could not set up a minimal example to send you. fullhz, kerning and glue

So, apparently fullhz enables stretching of *kerning* – that sounds to me like letterspacing. Today LMTX is state of the art and I tried to build it with a recent LMTX. This lead to problems because LMTX does not include modules. Therefore my question is: Is the a plan to include modules into the regular LMTX installation? The following produces different results in mkiv and lmtx (to which I am brand new): \setupinitial[distance=1pt,font=Serif at 36pt,n=2] \setupindenting[medium,yes] \starttext \placeinitial \input knuth \stoptext The mkiv output is the desired effect. It works fine in lmtx if I do not change to medium indentation. Is this a bug or a feature (i.e., should I change something to work properly in both environments)?

Prolongation of the sidebar to the footnotes.

Good morning everybody, I am composing a text in which there is a sidebar environment in whose text some footnotes are included. If the environment ends before the page, the sidebar stops at the point where the environment ends, and does not reach the area where the footnotes are. On the other hand, if the environment extends to the next page, the sidebar goes all the way to the bottom of the page, crossing the footnotes, which causes an unaesthetic effect. I've been using context thanks to these installation steps on win 7 and win 10. I'm not sure what the targetgroup at the conference is, but if the people there ever used a commandline, they should be good to go. once you install, you open the commandline using Win+R and then type "cmd". Once in the cmd, you only need to know the command "cd" (change directory) to navigate to the folder where the .tex source is, so e.g. "cd c:\users\x\documents\" and then run "context test.tex". That is the manual way. I use sublimetext as text editor and made a new build for it, that when I press Ctrl+B saves all changes in the open file/folder and runs context on the open file and previews the pdf in mupdf that is zoomed to be 1:1 paper:print on my dpi. It's a bit like TeXworks, just press button and see the pdf, because mupdf automatically overwrites the open pdf without asking. It's 4 hours by train for me to Bonn and I'm not sure whether I'm a good candidate to teach people context due to my low skill, but I can surely teach you how to install lmtx on windows if you like (we could call or sth). I experience two issues with scite buffers: \usemodule[scite] \setuptyping[margin=yes] \starttext \startbuffer[b]b\stopbuffer \startTEXpage[offset=1em] no margin a \sciteinlinebuffer[none][b] a a \typeinlinebuffer[b][option] a \stopTEXpage \stoptext 1. Margin is applied to \sciteinlinebuffer. 2. An extra unwanted space is added after \sciteinlinebuffer. Isn’t it intended that \sciteinlinebuffer behaves in a similar way as \typeinlinebuffer? Hi, We're pleased to announce the first official release of the new math code. We're talking of: -- a reworked math engine (which happened stepwise so some already trickled into previous uploads) -- settling on one model for display math but with alignment variants as well as improving inline math (e.g. wrt linebreaks) -- redoing bit of the (sub) numbering -- improving the alignment features (the traditional one and the text/page mode one) -- fixing the math font using all kind of tweaks in the goodie file -- providing means to annotate formulas -- we ditched support for \over simply because it is too fragile wrt spacing (one can \usemodule[oldmath] to get it back -- we might move some more alien stuff to m-oldmath in due time We paid a lot of attention to details of positioning, sizing and spacing of glyphs. We do have some documents in the making that describe this (some are in the ontarget namespace) and the second half of this year we use for writing a math manual (Mikael) and updating the luametatex manual (Hans). For sure we will run into unforseen issues, come up with additional things and try to please users who have demands. There are 'hidden' features that will be revealed stepwise. An example of some usage will be posted next. The pragma-ade.com domain is still in transfer but the nl one should work fine. There is now also a https://www.luametatex.org that might be get some more than there is now (when i find it useful but best to have the domain for the ctx group). Malfunctioning of syllabic partitioning of words in Spanish

I am writing a document in Spanish and I notice that the syllable partitioning of words does not conform to the rules of the language. And so, for example, the word "limitarse" is partitioned as "lim-itarse" (the correct one is "li-mi-tar-se"), "colores" as "col-ores" (instead of "co-lo-res"), "abstenerse" as "absten-erse" (and it should be "abs-te-ner-se"), etc. These are too many errors; moreover, given that the syllabic partitioning rules in Spanish are relatively simple. Is it possible that something has been changed in the Spanish language module? I do not know Lua and therefore I am not in a position to correct the corresponding module on my own, but I could synthesize the syllable partitioning rules for those who can, if they do not speak Spanish and need help in that field. -- Joaquín Ataz López Universidad de Murcia | jal(a)um.es

Using alegreya typescript

Dear all, for a long time I never had to used a custom typescript, but now I want to use the Alegreya font and found the typescript on contextgarden. https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Alegreya_Typescript The script seems to cover a lot of variations. https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Alegreya_Typescript I include the typescript in an environment. With this I get the Alegreya Regular font: \environment alegreya \setupbodyfont [alegreya, 11pt] \starttext \input lorem \stoptext With this I get the Alegreya Sans Regular font: \environment juh.env-alegreya \setupbodyfont [alegreya, sans, 10pt] \starttext \input lorem \stoptext I am unable to get the light variant. \environment juh.env-alegreya \setupbodyfont [alegreya-light, sans, 10pt] \starttext \input lorem \stoptext I guess that I miss a lot of things in the typescript. Enabling PDF tagging corrupts the URLs displayed in bibliographies. Odd behaviour with Plex typescript

If you load the Plex typescript, a spurious space is added on the first switch to another font, messing up any alignment. This doesn't happen with any other fonts; only with Plex. Sometimes using \setextrafontkerns can cause an infinite loop. Auto width and height on table cells

Hello, I want some tables to occupy 100% of \textwidth and \textheight and for all columns to be the same width except one or two that I want to specify and for all rows to be the same height except for one or two, that I want to specify as well.. For the moment, I'm doing it "manually", calculating column width as (\textwidth - width of fixed columns) / # rest of columns and row height as (\textheight - height of fixed rows) / # rest of rows I'm getting the result that I want, but it's a bit tedious. Is it possible to have ConTeXt do all those calculations for me? I haven't been able to figure it out from the manuals and the wiki. Thank you in advance. Regards, Ángel

Graded Transparency in MetaFun

Hi all I'm trying to create graded transparency over an area similar to the effect produced using lmt_shade, where one colour goes to another colour over a continuum, but with graded transparency we would go from say 0 to 1 transparency, for a single colour. See the MWE below. I have tried this by creating a loop which draws a linear path, yshifted the thickness of the pen, with transparency calculated for each step over the a predetermined height on the page. I have also tried a similar way for a circular path but in this case the path is repeatedly drawn scaled in a loop. The MWE below works OK but when I zoom into the graded transparency areas lines begin to appear which would suggest that their is a better way to do what I want. This is borne out if you zoom into a lmt-shade area, one colour smoothly becomes another colour. I've put examples of this in the MWE. I'm guessing the way lmt_shade areas are drawn is the way to go. Is this likely to be easy to code for what I want to do? I completely agree, Hans, that such specifications are often made without a second thought on them. And Max is probably right that they originated from the typewriter area. In a sense these "challenges" can be at least somewhat educational. I've learnt---also thanks to Max's suggestions---a fair amount on LMTX. Hi Hans, I know you hate form widgets, but I found a clue what might be wrong with radiobuttons. While we can’t fix the behaviour of viewers, ConTeXt’s radiobuttons misbehave if they don’t have a custom symbol (that OTOH is not shown in many viewers). If I don’t use a custom symbol in \definesubfield, all subfields are activated together, which is clearly wrong. I hope that’s an easy fix. colors and contours in luametafun

Dear list, I am a huge fan of the new metafun interface. Hans asked for luametafun requests, so here are a few. - color by value in lmt_surface We want to show a surface plot of a function where the color indicates the function value (instead, or in addition to a light source). The easiest would be to have variable cf for the brightness factor (as it is), and in addition variables such as zt, minz, maxz, akin to the color formatter for lmt_contour. This becomes handy when colors are to be aligned with function values (e.g. negative = blue, zero = white, positive = red, see MWE attached). - controlling line levels in lmt_contour It would be convenient if certain levels could be set by the user. E.g. to make sure the zero level contour line is included. The user interface could potentially take a list, levels = { -1, -.5, 0, .5, 1 }, of contour level lines. See MWE attached. From my understanding marching squares can do that. A possible reference implementation could be QuadContourGenerator [1] in matplotlib, a bit of description can be found in [2]. - colormaps Contour plots often use rather complex colormaps, such as jet, rainbow or veridis. They are optimized for perceptual resolution, color blindness, screen/print or certain use cases. The functionality is already there, but from a user's perspective, it would be much easier if some of these were provided by the interface. The interface could be color = "colormap('jet')(l/n)". Indeed, these are useful in other use cases as well, such as bar charts, surface plots or shades. One rudimentary example is in the attached file. - number of levels in lmt_contour (potential bug) The number of levels is different from the user's input. Depending on the output range it can be lower or higher (see MWE attached). The setup I offered in the previous email was all correct, but in a large project like a dictionary with 26 or more components there can always be something else that goes wrong! Component 'D' had an extra { in it, but oddly enough the component was compiling, except that I picked up an error message despite the fact it had compiled correctly. That one error was enough to throw things out of kilter, including the \placelistofabbreviations in an earlier component. Sorry for the noise Julian

\placelistofabbreviations in project structure?

Hi, I wonder what I might be doing wrong for \placelistofabbreviations not to work in a project. Everything else about \definesysnonyms and indeed the project is working, but I seem unable to place the list correctly in the component that is intended to list all abbreviations. The main environment file for the project contains the definitions. e.g. \definesynonyms[abbreviation][abbreviations][\infull] \setupsynonyms[abbreviation][synonymstyle=\em] \abbreviation[adjp] {adjp.} {adjectival phrase} All dictionary components (A-Z) call on the main environment file where the above is defined and give me the correct result if I write \adjp\ or \infull{adjp} in any one of them. My MWE below for the (as yet not working) abbreviations component that contains the placelist command: \startcomponent 04_abbreviations \project project_Dictionary \startchapter[title={Abbreviations}] \placelistofabbreviations[criterium=all] \stopchapter \stopcomponent According to me that should work, but all I get is the chapter title. Imagine I have the following command: \setuplist [chapter] [alternative=d] But I only want for sectionblock bodypart (nof for frontpart, backpart or the appendices). I was using this code for a long time in my document. I’ve been trying out Doom-Emacs and when I open a ConTeXt file i want the engine point to my LMTX installation. /Users/jan-erikhagglof/context/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/ is the path to my install on my Macos Monterey. Hi, I think I've ran into a somewhat strange behaviour. If you have a footnote in a float caption, the footnote won't use the full textwidth, but only the width of the corresponding caption. Is that on purpose, a context bug or a user bug? Why are some images rendered very tiny?

I wrote this macro to display images in my book. Rotating jpeg image gives weird output

Hi, I have a jpeg image that drives me crazy. The scanned image I have received from the author is in landscape. So, I've rotated the image, but now two things happen: 1. there's a weird offset (the image is moved to the right) 2. The output contains this line . location=local,global. location=local,global I'm not quite quite sure how I can produce a MWE that shows the problem, but has anyone ever seen something like this? Does anyone know what that < . location=local,global. location=local,global > stuff means? Best, Denis P.S: I've performed the rotations using the standard picture editor on Windows and with GIMP. Table of Contents empty for unknown reason

I need to display a table of contents, but only displaying chapters. Problems with MetaFun Transparency Groups

Hi everyone! I have a question regarding transparency groups in MetaFun. As a toy example, I want to draw a grid of lines where the whole grid should have an opacity of 25%. If I draw intersecting lines individually with `withtransparency(1, .25)` the overlapping parts will have a total opacity of 50%. However, I want to draw the whole grid as one group and then blend it as a whole so that the whole grid is evenly colored when blended. According to the MetaFun manual we should be able to get the desired effect with the `asgroup` operator applied to a picture. (Actually, the manual says the operator is called `grouped` but the source code of the graphics above uses the `asgroup` operator [1].) The `asgroup` does in fact insert a transparency group into the PDF output: > << /Type /XObject /Subtype /Form /FormType 1 /Group << /S /Transparency /I false /K false However, the group does not seem to be blended as one group and we can still see that the overlapping parts are darker than the other parts of the line. Something seems to be off. Looking at the compiled manual also shows that the transparency groups are not working (both parts of the arrow, the head and the tail, are blended independently and not as a group). When I recreate the graphics in Tikz/PGF everything works. The resulting PDF output looks similar, at least with my limited understanding of PDF format I am unable to understand the differences. The full example is attached below the text of my mail. The Tikz example on the fifth page shows the desired result. Do I misunderstand the syntax of transparency groups in MetaFun? small fontsize and \definecolumnsetspan cause columns to jump (bug?)

Hi, if the fontsize is smaller than ~11pt and there is \startcolumnsetspan used, then the two first lines of the second column are not aligned to the grid (they jump). Making the font bigger, or deleting the \startcolumnsetspan can both fix the problem. It seems like a bug to me, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any idea about how to align all the lines in this specific table? How to define a section title, after the section title appears?

I have a document with conditionally-generated content. There are some situations when I need the section title to change according to the content displayed within that section. For instance, the 14th section that appears in *every* chapter is either called "Cause and Effect" if the conditions decide to place macros \altMa, \altMb, or \altMc inside, but becomes called "Compare and Contrast" if one of a dozen other macros are pladed there. - The macros are defined in an entirely different macros.tex file. - The whole document is in a recurse loop, so \recurselevel or \chaptertitleis can give the current chapter number. I tried defining chapter titles inside the macros, `\setvalue{title\recurselevel}{Cause and Effect}`, but \getvalue{title\recurselevel}` couldn't find the defined value. I tried just defining in each macro \define\thesectiontitleis{Compare and Contrast}, but that only affects things AFTER the macro is called, so the wrong titles appear. How do I very simply make a section title change according to what content is inside it? --Joel

Improving pandoc's ConTeXt output

Hi all, I'm currently trying to improve the ConTeXt output generated by pandoc, the document convert. There are two questions that we haven't decided on, and I'd be grateful to receive some feedback from ConTeXt experts on these issues: 1. As far as I understand, the `\section` syntax currently produced by pandoc should be considered mkii legacy syntax. We're likely going to switch to the modern `\startsection`/`\stopsection` syntax instead. Are there any concerns about retiring the old syntax? (Side note: pandoc already produces the new syntax, but only when called with `--section-divs`.) 2. Similarly, I'd like to start wrapping paragraphs with `\startparagraph`/`\stopparagraph`. It is important for me to get properly tagged PDF, but this would also make the output more verbose. Is that something that you would find bothering, or do you see adding the extra environment by default as an acceptable practice? Workshop at FrOSCon

Dear all, this year there will be a real life FrOSCon in Bonn Sankt Augustin at the Fachhochschule Rhein-Sieg again. https://www.froscon.org/cfp/cfpapers/ I am considering to submit a workshop to bootstrap people with ConTeXt, but I am not the best one to do this. So I would like to discuss if we as a community can do something. There are several possibilities: 1. Developer Room https://www.froscon.org/cfp/cfprojects/ This is a room where a project can organize their own schedule. They can programme, give talks or workshops. I've done some of these in the recent years together with the Zope/Plone Community, the Python Community or Hostsharing. It was always great fun. 2. Workshop A workshop is scheduled in the main programme of FrOSCon. Duration: 2h. I think that this is a good schedule to bootstrap people with LMTX and for the first hello world steps. 3. Booth I guess that Dante will have a booth as they had the years before. 4. A talk. I am pondering if I should submit a talk about our production at Hostsharing but typesetting does not fit nicely in the main topics of the conference. Deadline is 2022-06-12. For the Developer Room we need at least three people willing to attend the whole time at least for one day. If anyone would help me to organize a 2h-Bootstrap Workshop for ConTeXt I would be very happy. Attached are tweaked endings for words like "wolf" to include contracted endings, but they are being ignored. This makes for a minor inconsistency: wolfing -- no ligature wolfish -- no ligature wolfin -- no ligature (incorrect spelling, though) wolfin' -- ligature Any ideas? Can I simplify this to some sort of logic so it scales better?

I was wondering what would be a good approach to simplify it. I want to make sure that one and only one of these modes is active and that if no mode is entered on the command line the mode is EN. Compiling context files in command line

Hello ConTeXist. After a long time, I turn to the conference for help. I use command line to batch process of many ConTeXt files. Is it possible at the end off compile proces to move the created PDF to another directory (subdirectory of current directory) using the command line commands? Somehow I can't do it or maybe I'm making a mistake somewhere. Renaming works but moving into subdirectory I can't do it for some reason. What could be the problem? Is it even possible do it? I work with OS X in bash. This creates a large number of PDF files that I do not want to be placed in the current directory. Certificate expired on pragma-ade.com

The TLS certificate for www.pragma-ade.com appears to have expired on "Thu, 02 Jun 2022 07:37:56 GMT". Firefox and Chrome both give "Certificate expired" errors when I try and connect. I can still access the site, although I need to click through a few warnings first. -- Max

issue with scite module

Dear list, I have this minimal sample (with current latest from 2022.05.11 11:36 on Linux64): \usemodule[scite] \starttext \startXML ñ\stopXML \stoptext Commenting out the first line avoids compilation error. Replacing ñ with n also allows compilation. I think there may be an error in m-scite.mkiv. The inclusion of non-ASCII characters in XML code seems to leave an unclosed argument. Could anyone confirm the issue or explain me what I am missing? Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Dear list, I have my third sample with scite: \usemodule[scite] \setuptyping[margin=yes] \starttext \startbuffer[b]b\stopbuffer \startTEXpage[offset=1em] a \sciteinlinebuffer[none][b] a\par a \typeinlinebuffer[b][option] a \stopTEXpage \stoptext I’m on Linux64 and using current latest from 2022.05.11 11:36. For some strange reason, \sciteinlinebuffer inherits the margin option from \setuptyping and it indents the whole paragraph. Could anyone confirm the issue? Many thanks for your help, Pablo
