Error when calling \placecontent from product

Hi, I'd appreciated some help with the following problem. How can I stop the following code generating an error on calling \placecontent from a product? OpenType beginners question

Making a template, defining a macro

Hi, I have to prepare a template to typeset a document that will have a lot of tables of similar kinds repeated across the document. I want to put that tables in some kind of templates, so I can use those templates over and over. So the idea is to hide to the authors all the format details behind the template allowing them to focus on the data that has to be filled in those tables (which is the important thing). So, I would like to define some macros, that allows me to do something like: \starttableX \startSomeField Some Field Value... \stopSomeField \startOtherField Other Field Value... \stopOtherField \stoptableX And the result, should be a table like this: | Some Field Label: | Some Field Value... | | Other Field Label: | Other Field Value... | That way I define a template for each table type I'll have in the document. I'm not having trouble with the tables, but with the macro definition, this is my approximation of what I want (which does not work): \startsetups crudmain \long\def\startguiname #1 \stopguiname{\setvariables[crudmain][guiname=#1]} \long\def\startclassname #1 \stopclassname{\setvariables[crudmain][classname=#1]} GUI Name: \getvariable{crudmain}{guiname} Class Name: \getvariable{crudmain}{classname} \stopsetups \definestartstop[crudmain][commands=\setups{crudmain}] \startcrudmain \startguiname Some name here... \stopguiname \startclassname Other name here... \stopclassname \stopcrudmain At this point I'm getting this error: ! Use of \startguiname doesn't match its definition. I want the \long\def\startguiname inside the \startsetups / \stopsetups to be sure that it will only be called inside the \startcrudmain / \stopcrudmain (Cause other tables of different types may have fields with the same name). But even considering the previous point, if I move the \long\def\startguiname outside the \startsetups / \stopsetups definition it does not works, because the \getvariable{crudmain}{guiname} just returns blank. So is it possible to do what I want or something similar? What would be a good way to do it? Any advice on the code I've already written? This is really getting me crazy, cause context is not like any other programming language I'm used to use ;-) Thanks in Advance Demián

Some time ago, I showed a few sample pages of a biochemistry textbook I wrote in ConTeXt. I now uploaded the setup file with comments in ContextGarden (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Biochemistry_textbook) I hope that it will be useful for beginners---I found examples helpful myself. A comment regarding the ongoing documentation discussion: The "Excursion" is basically excellent, I also love its Wordsworthian title; keep it! All that's needed is a few corrections and additions. Just an example: Based on "Excursion", you wouldn't be able to indent paragraphs. You'll find the answer in the FAQs, where a beginner probably wouldn't look for it (he/she would probably just give up). Equation numbers inside Theorem statements

Whenever I have an equation inside the theorem statement the equation number is also typeset in slanted style. But I would like the equation number to come out in normal style. What happened to \reference

I have started (after a hiatus) to compile my project again using an updated ConTeXt ConTeXt ver: 2008.03.03 00:34 MKII fmt: 2008.3.4 int: english/english and something that used to work has stopped working: \reference[logic:implicationprogram] {\getbuffer[logic:implicationprogram]} gives an empty result. This used to (say a year ago) get me the contents of the buffer I set up earlier. I tried the excursion, manual and wiki but only got very confused. In the past I must have concluded that this should work and apparantly it did. But rereading everything about \reference (wiki gives me many hits and I cannot find the right one) I get completely confused about what \reference exactly does with the second argument. G

Creating account on wiki contextgarden

Hi everyone, I want to translate "Context an excursion" to farsi and went to http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_on_Excursion,_translations and tried to create an account to be able to access source files. I faced a problem in the "anti automated account creation question" which is something like (23 plus 8) times roman 'C' What must be inserted as the answer to such a problem. Overriding a chapter number

When I compile a chapter of a book separately, I want to override the automatic numbering because otherwise every separate pdf will have chapter 1. So I tried: \doifmode{standalone}{\setuphead[chapter][2]} \chapter[h:foo]{Foo} But the chapter still gets number 1 when I compile with texexec --pdf --mode=standalone c_foo.tex what am I doing wrong here? Passing unicode characters

Hi Hans, why was 'script=latn' removed from the three predefined fontfeatures default, oldstyle and smallcaps. A lot of fonts (free and commercial) need these features to enable kerning, ligatures and other features. Regards, Wolfgang

Indenting / small paper size / strange paragraph cutting

Hello, I got my Sony prs 505 ebook reader last week… Nice machine. I tried to set-up one of my favorite book to be read on this. Here are the specials part : — Page size : 120mm x 90 mm — margins : 3mm up/down and 2mm left/right (could be 1mm, in fact) Here are the links to the .tex and .pdf files. Here are my problems : — I can't set the space before my section number : in line 38 : \setuphead[section][style=tfc, numberstyle=bold, before={\blank[3*big]}, alternative=middle] everithing work but the « before » section — still can't have automatic indent after section. I need to force it using « \indentation » (line 47) — look at the end of the first page : there's a big gap. Don't know why. It's in the middle of a sentence, and the paragraph is big after. — at the end of the second page, third line before the end, the « dans » is in the margin. I can't hyphenate this word. I woud prefer having bigger white spaces rather than this. — on page 3, before « Une horloge » I can't have indentation after \crlf. I used a « \packed » command after empty line but it's not what I want. I want a new line, with indentation but not a « \par » vertical spacing. Sorry for this 3 pages exemple. It was hard to do less (but now you have the begining of the french translation of « Stirrings Still » from Samuel Beckett). MetaPost graphics within formulas

Hi there, maths can sometimes be weird and even more so the kinds of formulas one needs to typeset occasionally ;-) So here I need to typeset triangles and a variety of other polygons right in the middle of a display formula. Dag ok, ConTeXt-garden suggests to use Smultron editor with Minimal-ConTeXt installation - http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ ConTeXt_Minimals#Smultron_installation_and_configuration and gives some information about how to configure Smultron to work as an editor for ConTeXt. Question: Might it be worthwile to use Smultron (instead of TeXShop) as editor also with the Mac-TeX-TL installation which I have? Then, how to adjust the configuration of Smultron in that case, _instead_ of the following for Minimal-ConTeXt (quoted from that instruction): ---------------------------------------- 4. Create a new command by pressing the "New Command" button and type a name (e.g. "minimalsTexexec"). \index versus makeindex.

Usually I use makeindex for indexing but for my current job I thought the Context \index command would be convenient. However I discovered that the \index command does not provide for page ranges. If I index the same item on pages 46, 47, 48, and 49 makeindex will collapse this into a range of 46-49. Context won't. I looked at the book.tuo file but it does not look like something I can hand-modify. Is there a work-around I have missed or must I revert to makeindex to get a proper index? I am ccing Hans because my posts don't seem to make their way to the list for some reason. The \about cross reference command woks ok if I use \about[aa] It delivers the title (or part of it in this case) of the section marked aa. but when I try to give it some text it blows up on the text, e.g., \about{foo}[aa] So what if anything goes between the { and the }? Hi, I'm recently testing mkiv/luatex (ConTeXt ver: 2008.07.18 18:38 MKIV fmt: 2008.7.19 installed; compiling with 'context file') for a new project. I don't know if my questions depend on mkii or mkiv specifics. I have some problems figuring out what kind of parameters I can use to setup footnotes in a multicolumn layout (is it better to use column sets and define areas?). When I'm using location=lastcolumn then footnotes get placed in the last column *inside* the text column while when using firstcolumn as an option they will be placed below the first column but outside the text column at the end of the page. And both columns don't get balanced. Problem in arabic script

I use context+luatex to write farsi texts. A problem that I have been faced is that some characters (those that are in farsi and not in arabic like "Gaf", "Kaf", "Ya" and "Che") are shown only in isolated form. How can I solve this problem. I use ubuntu and latest context and luatex. Thanks

Hi, Is there a way to automatically "highlight changes" to a document, such that the resulting PDF has markers showing changed areas? Bars in the margin or some such. Or more generally some other way to easily communicate what has been changed (other than a diff on the source). -- John Devereux

setupMMLappearance

Hello. I am used to using \setupMMLappearance[mtable][alternative=a|b|c] to change the way the mathml module treats mtable alignments. I've just discovered it no longer seems to have any effect. What I need to set up is an alignment where the first column of an mtable is right-aligned (ragged left), the second is centred, and the third is left-aligned (ragged right). But I keep getting the first column left-aligned, which makes multi-line equations look awful. Is there a new mechanism for setting these alignments? It looked like it from reading newmml, but there don't seem to be any examples of usage. Can someone help? Secondary question: how can I increase the gap between rows in an mtable - at the moment they are very squashed. Indexing problem solved. Makeindex works with Context!

I discovered an old file in the texsis distribution called index.tex. Unlike eplain.tex it doesn't cause problems when used with Context. It creates the book.idx file required by makeindex. Now the full range of features of makeindex are available to Context users. The only change needed is trivial, in every \index statement change the + sign to ! and of course run makeindex between Context runs. This solution is simple enough and adds enough power to Context that I suggest it be incorporated into the texexec program. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of eplain but it has enough to produce a professional index. And since that is part of my business I welcome it. Hello, I would like to ask some Windows user to test if windows minimals still work OK. And another issue - TeX Live has switched to universal binaries for Mac. Oliver has asked me to do that some time ago, but I didn't want to mess up with having to (cross-)compile the basic binaries as well. What do others think? (I kind of prefer separate binaries since they are twice smaller and don't really bring many advantages except that one would only need a single package once Oliver's instller comes to existance.) The transition would need some modifications, I'm first asking for opinion. Mojca

Hi all, I have just released the archive files for MetaPost 1.090, the first official beta for the new stable version of MetaPost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What is new: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This MetaPost release is based on MPlib. For those of you who are not aware of the MPlib project yet: MPlib is the name of the new, revamped version of the MetaPost interpreter. It is implemented in Cweb, and internally consists of a core library, an mpx generation library, and a frontend driver program (mpost). There are no changes to the MetaPost language, but nevertheless there are some minor differences with the last pascal-web based version of MetaPost (1.005): * The MPlib distribution is released under the GPL version 2 or, at your option, any later version. * The commandline is slightly different, run mpost --help for details. * The mem file format is changed, you have to regenerate any existing ones. * The new mpx generation library includes the label generation functionality that was previously provided by 'makempx', and this internal code will be used instead of an external program. That is, unless the MPXCOMMAND variable is set in the environment or texmf.cnf. The 'mpware' programs became obsolete and are no longer included in the distribution. * Most of the memory configuration variables from texmf.cnf have become obsolete due to dynamic reallocation. The four remaining ones are 'main_memory', 'hash_size', 'max_in_open', 'param_size'. These are only taken into account at mem generation time, the values are stored in and reloaded from the mem file. * The core MPlib library does not interpret an initial '&' as anything special and it does not support re-initialization using a different mem file either. My original query has generated some interesting sidelines but no solution, at least none that I can see. So, with all due apologies, I shall presume on your patience by restating my query. In (English) typography the spacing after a period within a sentence is less that that after a period at the end of a sentence. Since the days of Plain TeX, one achieved the proper spacing after an intra- sentence period by entering “.\<space>”. My problem is that this no longer seems to work with recent versions of ConTeXt/MKII: “.\<space>” does not seem to have any effect at all. So, how are we now to get the proper spacing after an intra-sentence period? Are there some language/spacing commands that need to be invoked in the prelims now? Sample text: \starttext A. E. I have the latest ConTeXt and am using mkii. One used to be able to reduce the spacing after an initial by by typing “.\<space>”, but this no longer seems to work. Compare the inter-word spacing in \starttext A. E. Samuel\crlf A.\ E.\ Samuel \stoptext If the is a difference here, I am having trouble seeing it; and on a typeset page, the gaps after the initials just seem too big. In general, I find that the spacing after certain characters ---e.g., “)”---has been increased of late. Is this in fact the case? Or should I go back to my old glasses? Cheers, Alan

Hi, after watching the list for some time, I decided to try luatex. On ubuntu, I installed the minimals as indicated in http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals (in my home folder) A simple testfile works with "texmfstart texexec file" (Mk II) and "context file" (Mk IV). I then tried to install fonts I use frequently (LinLibertine and Gentium). I created a "texmf-local" folder and mirrored my previous installation, i.e.: texmf-local/fonts/truetype/sil/gentium texmf-local/fonts/tfm/sil/gentium texmf-local/fonts/vf/sil/gentium texmf-local/map/pdftex/context/texnansi-sil-... texm-local/tex/context/base/type-... Then: mktexlsr Result: font not used (with texmfstart texexec file) I then tried other commands (without expecting much), namely: mtxrun --selfupdate luatools --selfupdate luatools --generate mtxrun --script font --reload again, without effect. I then copied everything into texmf-context and executed the above commands. Without effect. Before I provide more details, these questions: 1. I created texmf-local in the hope that it will survive updates. Is this so? 2. Shouldn't mktexlsr be enough, if you use Mk II? \setuphheadertexts for titles.

Here is my current \setupheadertexts \setupheadertexts[text] [chapter][pagenumber][pagenumber][Don't Leave Your Company's Money on the Table] It works fine for chapters. I have a few titles that I want to have running heads for also, such as Preface, Introduction and so on. I tried using a special \setupheadertexts locally with the entire text enclosed in brackets thus: {\setupheadertexts[text] [Introduction][pagenumber][pagenumber][Don't Leave Your Company's Money on the Table] (text) ... } but that didn't work. Changing the second field to {chapter,title] just gave me the words "chapter,title". Hi LUA-users, Yesterday I installed a complete new set of minimals on my MAC (OSX 10.4). Now I get very strange results wit MATPOST. The file compiled contains a large definition which is used as an inclusion to produce a series of similar drawings with different parameters. When compiling the document with texexec --lua the fist page is ok. The second and the following pages contain each page all the previous drawings on top of each other. If the same drawing-set is compiled with texexec in MKII mode (This is MetaPost, version 1.085 (kpathsea version 3.5.6dev), some elements are distorted. It concerns elements, which are rotated and shifted. The fullcircle contained in the drawing is distorted too. Further also this document contains on the second and following pages the drawings from the previous pages stacked. This file compiles correctly with This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.1 (Web2C 7.5.6) (format=cont- en 2008.3.21) 16 JUL 2008 14:38 ConTeXt ver: 2008.03.11 23:55 MKII fmt: 2008.3.21 int: english/ english I tried to make a small test file. luatools cache problem (beta)

Hi, I am trying to use fontfeatures contained in my new otf-font Seravek. I am getting Seravek in the file but no way to activate the oldstyle figures and the small caps. :-( Can someone give m a clue? Per the Chicago Manual of Style divider pages and their blank versos do not show page numbers but are included in the page count, just like any other pages. However the \part macro excludes them from the page numbering sequence altogether. And my current customer at least wants roman rather than arabic numerals. Hi all, I played some more with the new mkiv xml mechanism and am beginning to see the light: some things that turned out to be very difficult (at least for me) with the "old" mechanism are easy now. However, I still have a couple of questions: 1. What am I doing wrong? 2. In every run, I get this warning: TeXUtil | check loading of file 'test-style', begin/end problem I don't see anything wrong with my files, though. Is this harmless? 3. I have a structure like this to get numbered labels: <lemmasection> <label>1234</label> <content> blahblah </content> </lemmasection> When I process this, I get unwanted spaces in my pdf; they disappear when I delete the newline and space between <content> and blahblah. Hi all, Taco, yet another question re the bib-module: I am wondering how to deal with place names (or other elements) in different languages. E.g., if a book has been published in Munich, I'd like the place to read "Munich" when the language of the document in which the bibliography occurs is German, "München" when the language is German. So is there any switch that would allow me to have something like this in my .bib- file: address = {\iflanguageelse{de}{München}{Munich}} Or do you have any other suggestions what I could do? Thanks! Hi all, There now is a wiki page documenting the setup and maintenance of mkiv: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Running_Mark_IV The page can still be improved upon (of course), so if you know of something that needs to be added or explained better, please do so. I wrote this page with the texlive 2008 users in mind, but I think most of it applies to the new context minimals as well. For the people not on the texlive list: After ample consideration and discussion, we have decided that texlive will not attempt to do any configuration of mkiv at all other than making sure the three commands (luatools, mtxrun, context) are available in the bin directory. Everything else is left up to the user. But of course we don't want every single texlive context user to ask the same set of questions again and again, so it is helpful to have a wiki page that explains post-install configuration and maintenance. If you are a mkiv user already, or willing to experiment trying to get mkiv running, please have a look at that wiki page. By the way, context on texlive2008 will be 2008.05.21. Mkii (pdftex as well as xetex) runs out of the box, no post-install intervention needed. But if someone is willing to do some extra tests, that will be much appreciated. serious trouble with postponefootnotes

Hi, in a huge document (about 450 pages 1200 footnotes) I used postponefootnotes/flushfootnotes. Annoyingly this changed the page break for the entire book not only at the affected pages ... Searching the archive gave me a post by horaciosuarez_at_hotmail.com who had a similar problem in July 2007. Unfortunately he never got an answer. He used it in footnote conflicts with tables, me only in footnote conflicts with text, trying to avoid a bad page break. Now I ask the same: after using postpone/flushfootnotes is there a way to *reset* this again? Steffen

Hello, I tried to force hyphen in composed word with this : « composed||word » as explain in the manual. (Strange that context can't know that he can cut composed words after the dash, maybe it's only a french rule). In french, the hyphenmark is « - », not « – » (endash). So I tried \setuphyphenmark [sign = -] but no effect, I still get a « – ». This syntax : « composed|-|word » works. Manuel Pacheco Guerrero Pregunto en castellano por si alguien me puede ayudar: Normalmente uso la distribución texlive que instala por defecto ubuntu 8.4. con la cual no puedo ejecutar texexec --luatex (Luatools | using format name ~/luatex-cache/context/formats/cont-en.fmt Luatools | no luc/lua with name ~/luatex-cache/context/formats/cont-en) He bajado y descomprimido texlive2008 en un directorio temporal y he ejecutado el instalador install-tl, lo cual me ha creado el arbol de directorios y los ejecutables. Puedo ejecutar texexec desde el directorio ~/texlive2008/bin/ pero no texexec --luatex, que me da el mismo mensaje anterior de Luatools. ¿Me he saltado algún paso en la instalación?, ¿interfiere la instalación previa de texlive? Hello there! I was googling around, but couldn't really figure out how to use OpenType fonts with ConTeXt and XeTeX with precise sizes in points. I am trying to create a subsection style with Gentium 24pt. I am creating a typeface like it's recommended in the documentation: \definetypeface [Gentium][rm][Xserif][Gentium] Then I create my own subsection style: \setuphead [subsection] [alternative=inmargin, numbercolor=orange, style=\Gentium] So far so good, but it actually types the subsection out with some pre- determined font size. What I'm trying to do is get my subsections at the size of, say, precisely 24 pt. Stuff like \definetypeface [Gentium][rm][Xserif][Gentium] \definefont [Subs][Gentium at 24pt] apparently invokes non-XeTeX font routines (pardon my ignorance): kpathsea: Running mktextfm subsections mktextfm: Running mf-nowin -progname=mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode; input subsections This is METAFONT, Version 2.71828 (Web2C 7.5.6) kpathsea: Running mktexmf subsections ! I can't find file `subsections'. The best I was able to get was adding rscale \definetypeface [Gentium][rm][Xserif][Gentium][rscale=1.4] which is bad for two reasons: first, it's not logically correct, since I am planning to use my typeface for different sizes throughout the document, and second, I really want to control my sizes in points. \placebookmarks: opening with only topmost levels visible

But it should open with just chapter bookmarks due to the second argument in this line: \placebookmarks [chapter,section] [chapter] The problem is mentioned on the wiki <http://wiki.contextgarden.net/PDF_Bookmarks_and_Headers> and I wasn't able to solve it by looking over the bookmark code in core-int.tex. I tried the example, with the same results, using Mk II 2008.05.21 (on my Debian i386 laptop), Mk II 2008.07.07 (live.contextgarden.net) and live Luatex. Any ideas? fonts with luatex

Hi, I have a former ubuntu tex/context installation with fonts in /usr/share/texmf/fonts/truetype (opentype, etc... ) [1] as well as a tex/context minimals installation with fonts in /opt/context/tex/texmf/fonts/truetype (opentype, etc... ) [2] the latter using for development under luatex/context (previously xetex/context). Can both font locations be used or is it better to copy the fonts present in [1] and missing in [2] ( for ex, truetype fonts ) from [1] to [2] ? Alan

Automatic sorting of german umlauts in registers

Hi! Is there a way to sort german umlauts in registers automatically like the DUDEN does? For instance the DUDEN treats the ü like an u rather then ue. A little example: Huefte Huf Hüfte Hut The workaround with xindy is no good idea, because it removes the references in the pdf. Regards, Eyke

Filling frames with rounded corners

Is there any possibility to fill frames with rounded corners by defined color but not as a rectangle? I mean if I define \defineframed [frm][framecorner=round, frameoffset=20pt, background=color, backgroundcolor=color2] it ignores the rounded corners and offset and fills it like a regular rectangle. chapter page on right.

I have set up the \chapter command thus; \setuphead[chapter][page=right,style={\nimbua},header=high] ....where nimbua is a font. The chapter head appears on a recto (odd numbered) page as expected but the verso blank page inserted where necessary before the chapter head has a running header. It should be blank.
