Hi, I added lang-cjk (replaces lang-chi and lang-jap for mkiv) wich still lacks korean labels. Hi, As prelude to LuaTeX 0.40 there is now a beta 0.35. I uploaded a context beta that matches this version. The most important move is that we now have a new math subsystem. (Specially for Mojca: iwona seems to work ok). Apart from bringin unicode math this also gives a better performance. (Some info about what is involved can be found in mk.pdf on the website). There might be ommisions so when you run into one, just let us know. I have been revising my notes for newbie Mac installation of the ConTeXt Minimals and was about to put them online when I discovered that, when I try to process a file using MKIV, it does not find my personal texmf folder (~Library/texmf). There is no problem when I process the same file using MKII. \intertext{\ccaron} fails

Hello (Hans, Aditya), I know that neither of you is interested in mkii at the moment, but there's a nasty bug that probably has a trivial fix in alignment environments. Unicode characters have some problems inside \intertext{...} \startformula\startalign \intertext{še če je že} \stopalign\stopformula I remember the same problem in \startcases in the past that got fixed. \itemize[random] does not work

Hi, Akira reported problems with context and ruby 1.9 and it looks like there are some upward incompatible changes in ruby (even syntax) so i need some time to figure that out. lilypond results do not show.

Hi everyone, I tried the tex file attached in this email, but the lily figure not shown. The result pdf file and log file are also attached. I also find that there are two files, "mytry-lilypond-l.tmp" and "mytry-lilypond-2.tmp", generated. Those two generated files contain codes for lilypond. I run command LILYPOND on them and get "mytry-lilypond-1.pdf", but not "mytry-lilypond-2.pdf". I run MTXRUN on "mytry.tex" again and can only get an error because of existence of "mytry-lilypond-1.pdf". I searched in ntg-context mail list and found Olivier Guéry had the same problem before (http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2008/033582.html) It seems the problem solved in the new lilypond module. But the new module doesn't work here. Any help is appreciated! Can't compile LuaTeX beta 0.35.0 (on OS X)

Hello, if I try to compile the actual LuaTeX beta, the compilation ends with the following error: ld: in ../../libs/luasocket/src/socket.a, archive has no table of contents collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [luatex] Error 1 I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Intel) and checked out the source from svn://scm.foundry.supelec.fr/svn/luatex/tags/beta-0.35.0 Du I miss something? Creating a nomenclature section?

I haven't been able to find any documentation about producing a nomenclature section in a document using context. In the absence of a command/module providing the functionality of something like the nomencl package in latex, I was wondering if anyone else had an elegant work around for this issue. I guess I could just use a list to make a nomenclature section, but that would lose a lot of the functionality that makes something like nomencl useful. Mike

centered text in frame does not fit

Hi all, After a couple of years of using an older context version, it was time to update the whole setup. So I installed the context standalone version. I was pretty impressed about the ease of installation compared to what I remember from previous experiences. However, using a piece of tex that never gave me problems before, I now see the following : as you will see in the example, I put a centered text within a frame, and for some reason the line is splitted (see center and right frame), while the same text in the same frames, using left or right alignment does not split the lines, so the text itself is not too long to fit...... This did not happen on my previous context installation..... what could be the cause ? Hi all (or Taco? :-)), My a-key to use with the \cite command and my bib database doesn't seem to work when I have more than two authors/editors. bugs in arranging in mkiv interface=xp

With the following snippet \setuppapersize[A6][A4] \setuparranging[2*4, doublesided] \starttext \dorecurse{8}{ \input tufte \page} \stoptext and todays beta using the xp interface with context --interface=xp I got the surprising attached result with the arrange pages thrown onto the sheet with a seemingly random rotation. Also, in a more complex example with a toc, no toc is made, as if using texexec and forgetting the --arrange switch. However, adding the --arrange switch here has an entirely different consequence: only one of the arranged pages is placed on each sheet, so in effect there is no longer any arranging. I assume these are not intended behaviours, but would be happy to be informed I made an error in usage. \char"xxxx not working as I expected

Hi, I'm trying this small test on unicode characters, and the result I get is this: http://173.45.227.76/test3.pdf I did check the font in 'gucharmap' and it does contain all codes I'm using (U+2019, U+2610, U+226b, U+2115). But the result is a blank (U+2610 and U+2115) or wrong (U+226b) character. (U+2019 is shown properly.) The test alternates lines where a unicode character is inserted directly (using emacs 'ucs' input method) and then insert the same character using '\char'. (So, if you see strange chars in the code, it's because it does contain utf-8 characters.) It's intersting that u+226b is shown properly when typed, but not when using '\char'. Am I doing something wrong? slower access to ConTeXt generated pdfs in Windows Vista

When opening ConTeXt generated pdf's in Windows Vista, a message window pops up saying something as (translated to english): - title: preparation of document contents" - message: "please wait while the contents of your document is being prepared" + progress bar "page x of total pages" This doesn't show up in Windows XP or Linux. The embedded fonts are ttf fonts like arial/tahoma/verdana/times new roman, ... Any idea to what that's related and how to disable it/have it run in the background (if possible) because it slows access to reading the pdf. -- Alan

Making necessary OpenType features on by default

Currently, when defining a font feature one has to enable all features by hand which is IMHO not very user friendly as it implies prior knowledge about OpenType font features and the meaning of each one, not every Arabic user, for example, knows what does 'init', 'medi, etc. ligatures mean yet to know that he must enable them to get proper font rendering. I think some font features should be on by default, so that \definefontfeature[script=arabic] should be enough to get an Arabic font rendered correctly with the default features as its designer intended (designers assume that certain will be on while other are off by default, like liga vs. dlig), and if some one wants to disable a certain default feature he can turn it off, not the reverse. Microsoft's OpenType features list page (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/features_ae.htm) gives a "UI suggestion" for each feature noting if it should be on by default, I think those are what most OpenType enable by default (at least the ones I tested). Dear List, A lot of you guys helped me through the process of setting a little booklet and I have to say I was proud of the result (44 full color pages with a lot of pictures and texts). Thanks for that. I'm now in the process of printing that booklet. I was happy to send my beautiful pdf to the printer for 250 copies, pdf file that has been refused because not in a PDF/X-1A format. I googled a bit and learned a bit about that: wikipedia has a good article [0] on the topic and there is LaTeX package (pdfx) for pdfTeX that has a good doc about that [1]. In short, PDF/X-1A is a set of rules and subset of PDF that ensures that the document will be see exactly the same for the editor and the printer (embed every fonts, use only CMYK and son on). Here is my question: is it possible to produce such documents with ConTeXt? It is quite frustrating to provide my printer with huge jpeg files. Hi, I get this error with a font I just downloaded. It's my first attempt at using a font not provided with context minimals: %% !luaTeX error (file /home/mauricio/fontes/TITUSCBZ.TTF): can't find table `CFF ' ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! %% I found a thread on the mailing list discussing this, but the problem seems to have been solved by changing the extension to .TTF, but my file was already TTF when I first saw it. Hi, I'm using ConTeXt to create a small table of unicode characters. Below is my current test. The codes are: U+2019 is a single quotation mark U+2610 should be a ballot box U+226b should be a "much greater than" (>>) U+2115 should be the N as used to represent the natural numbers I get 2019 right, 2610 becomes a blank, 226b becomes just a 'b' and 2115 is also a blank. The choosen font is just one I selected (randomly) for testing. Is there a font I could select that would give me a wide set of unicode characters? Actually: is the choice of font the reason for the missing characters, or I'm just doing something wrong? Using texexec to prepare single-sided PDF for double-sided printing

Hi, I would like to use texexec to post-process a large pdf file, so as to prepare it for double sided printing. The existing file has a large left hand "margin" on each page, so as to allow binding. I would like to change this so that odd (right) pages have a large left margin, and even (left) pages a large right margin. I don't want to put 2 pages on one output sheet - although the ability to fine-tune the scaling might be useful. I have experimented with plenty of combinations of texexec --pdfarrange ...but I am not getting anywhere. Any suggestions appreciated. I am on debian and there are plenty of other pdf tools, but none of these seem quite right either. It would seem a common enough requirement but nothing quite works! Thanks, -- John Devereux

Hi, Is information on this page http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals still valid? After following instructions and successfull (I think) rsync sessions I try: source ~/context/tex/setuptex ~/context/tex and I'm told ~/context/tex is not a valid TeX directory. I also tried downloading a 'linux.zip' from http://minimals.contextgarden.net/pragma and it says the same. It also complains about a missing 'plain.tex'. What is the easier way to install MK IV? I usually use ConTeXt that comes with Ubuntu, I just need MK IV in one session where I need to type unicode characters by their number. (A previous message from Hans says \char"2019 would work for sure in MK IV.) Thanks, Maurício

Vertical lines for tabulate

Hi, there was a question in the german TeX newgroupd how create a table with borders on all which allows one to split the content at the end of the page. Although he used LaTeX I was looking for a ConTeXt solution, splitting the content is possible with tabulate but vertical lines are a problem. A found a solution with textackground but it did only work for the longest column. I'm interested to know whether nested sections are supported in the new structure code (strc-*)? Using the following to test, I don't get a section and subsection, but rather two sections. question for the xml-experts

Hi all, this is not a question about direct technical details, but more of a conceptual problem, and I would love to have your input and ideas on this. I will be editing several edited volumes in my field (humanities, classics). From experience, I know that it's impossible to make scholars in the humanities adhere to standards. Each and every one of them will turn in a paper (most of them written in half a dozen different versions of Word) with its own idiosyncracies. At my last conference, I asked them to please use Unicode for their Greek passages, and I got blank looks and the question "What the hell is Unicode?" So: I want to extract the content of these papers and process it with ConTeXt. I thought the easiest route might be convert them to OpenOffice odt and then use the content.xml as a starting point. Since the formatting will be unusable anyways, it doesn't make sense to process the odt directly; instead, I want to transform the xml via xslt to a simplified format and then process that with ConTeXt. I have just discovered the tool xalan ( http://xml.apache.org/xalan-c/index.html ) which allows me to use an xslt style sheet and direct the output to a new file. I will then need to clean up these xml files and write a mkiv xml setup for them. So for those who know much more about this sort of workflow: does that make sense? Is there any better way to achieve these results, i.e., have the content of a couple of papers in Word and/or rtf format and typeset it in a consistent ConTeXt environment? Is there any tool better than xslt to convert the OpenOffice xml than xslt (anything in lua that can parse xml)? Anything better than xalan to convert xm -> xml? I followed the link on the wiki and registered/dowloaded the source files for the ConTeXt beginner manual and the ConTeXt reference manual. Everything's ok but I have the following error trying to generate a PDF output with "make fr-print": ! Undefined control sequence. l.42 \secretsetup {setupheada} (This error also occurs if I test the compilation with make en-print.) Typing unicode

Hi, This is probably a really basic question already asked many times, but I wasn't able to find an answer. How to type an unicode character using its number? Searching for messages, I found things like: "2019 \char"2019 \char{"2019} \utfchar{"2019} but I wasn't able to get any of them to work. (I don't know for sure they actually should do what I want.) Inverted exclamation / question marks

Hello, I am trying to write a text in Castillian and I don't get the inverted exclamation symbol right. I am using \language[es] \mainlanguage[es] in the preamble and I also tried playing with utf without success. Instead of ¡ and ¿ I get an "a" with a cedilla and a pound symbol, respectively Of course, I can use {!`} and {?`}, but I was wondering why I don't get these right using \language I have done my homework and have googled, yahoo'ed and even clustied hint? thanks, Pau

useURL interactionmode

Hello, I defined urls like \useURL [activepython] [{http://.test.com}][sub]. Doing \from[url] with interactive mode enabled I get 'http://test.com' written in the document and the hyperlink point to http://test.com/sub. Now, if I disable interactive mode I still get 'http://test.com' on the output, but It would be nice to have 'http://test.com/sub', since there are no hyperlinks. is there a way to do this? My idea would be to write a macro that encabsulates \useURL, but is different, depending on the interaction-mode. Regards, Severin

Problem getting output

Dear all, When I try to typeset a file using XeConTeXt METAFONT is called and goes into a loop trying to make the fonts you see below. I have made a clean TeX installation from the MacTeX site but the result is the same. As an alternative I installed Minimals and created an MinXeConTeXt.engine in TeXShop. Hi, I know at least a few people use my letter module and I want to ask them if they have a problem when I change the handling of appendices like CC and postscript. The current way to write them is \startletter [copy=..., postscript=...] ... \stopletter and I want to change this in \startletter ... \CC{...} % or \copy{...} \PS{...} % or \postscript{...} \stopletter As positive side effect of the new method would be to write \startletter \opening{...} ... \closing{...} \stopletter as a alternative way to write the opening and closing text (the old keyval works too) but the appendices can be only handled in one way. Problem with flowchart in presentation layout

With flow.tex flow.pdf is generated. When generating again flow2.pdf is generated. (And every time it is generated again, there are 8 more blanco pages inserted.) When deleting the flowchart part in flow.tex, flow3.pdf is generated. This looks okay. So there should be something wrong with my flowchart code. But I do not see anything. What is going wrong here? Also, I would like to have the complete flowchart on my screen. Is there a way to make the room between the shapes less? -- Cecil Westerhof

hello gang, after almost a year of traveling i am back. anybody missed me? :] thought so. i have made the openbsd installation of context on top of texexec3 wiki page on the context wiki because i frequently reinstall my notebook and start from scratch with all my software. i realize by now texlive is the new thing but before i make context minimal work on openbsd i still prefer to bring up to date context on the much less bloated base of tetex3. my biggest gripe at the moment always at the end the ruby scripts... but this is something that could be easily changed. i personally find the following instructions the most helpful: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation#Ruby_scripts at the moment, the directory /usr/local/share/texmf-local/scripts/context/stubs/unix/ contains a bunch of scripts that are nice but unusable because 1. they dont have the x bit set 2. most of them contain something like texmfstart somescript "$@" while texmfstart itself is not defined anywhere it would be really nice if these stubs could be just dropped as replacements for any current scripts and work out of the box. i am not sure my proposed solution is a good one, because frankly, except texexec i have never used any of the other scripts.. but looking at the afore-quoted wikipage it seems to me that the author favoured the approach of calling all the other sripts using texexec. the beauty of this is that no other scripts need to be installed. so what do you people think about the following approach: stub for texmfstart to be put under /usr/local/bin/texmfstart: #!/bin/sh ruby `kpsewhich --format=texmfscripts texmfstart.rb` "$@" stub for texexe to be put under /usr/local/bin/texexec: #!/bin/sh SCRIPTNAME=`basename $0` if [ X"$SCRIPTNAME" = X"texexec" ]; then exec texmfstart texexec.rb "$@" else exec texmfstart $SCRIPTNAME "$@" fi and all the other script stubs could be removed i guess... -f -- good words cost no more than bad.

Different luatex binary

Hi, I have installed the context minimal on windows and have seen a strange thing. The luatex binay in the minimal directory is only 2.5 kb but the one in the foundry.supelec.fr is 2.64 Mb zipped. Also I am not able to compile my files which I could compile them 2 month ago. hi, is it possible to forward the output a compile to a specific directory to avoid cluttering the current dir? also do you guys know that --purgeall still leaves some output - such as bibtex - to the current dir. it would also be great if texexec could also accept which dir to get the temp files from to avoid generating them again. i know i can forward the PDF output to a specific place, but that's not the point.

Dear list, I've got two layout problems I can't resolve by myself: * On the left pages, in the left margin, there is a white stripe. I don't really understand why. I've read on the wiki that when we describe a layout for a double page layout, the left pages layout is a mirror of the right ones. And on the right ones, there are no white stripes... * My 'printer' (the company that will print the booklet for me, not sure that the good word) asks me to provide him with a document that is 2mm larger and 2mm higher that the final one to be sure he can print precisely to the exact border of the paper. Hi, I uploaded a new beta. There are a few math fixes (but extensible top accents will be done the next few weeks because the engine needs to rupport it). There is also a changed CJK handler (on by default but that might change because of some overhead that it creates). Russian/Cyrillic woes - Windows XP

Hello all! I'm stuck: I have to get at least my ConTeXt to typeset Russian. No ifs or buts, it has to compile a file where the text is in Russian. Getting my ConTeXt to do it can involve installing a font or updating or something, as long as I get it to work in my XP. Preferably I should need a fairly out-of-box to remotely set up a working system on a reasonably computer-literate customers XP. All the computers than can be used for the job run Windows XP and the stand-alone distribution. My own XP has a fairly old distribution without Lua, the test computer has the newest possible standalone version with updated ConTeXt (I ran the script that seemed to do the trick). Happened this far: - I figured out that I can get SciTe to show cyrillics if I put a set.character=204 in the user.properties - I deducted that I can get the updated ConTeXt to run MkIV "out-of-the-box" if I dig up the console and command texexec --lua filename - on the up-to-date ConTeXt I've tried all the tricks I found for Russian on the garden (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Russian) and on the mailing list (a thread from December last year). No luck. (Note. Testing has mostly involved cutting and pasting the full example code into a blank .tex and compiling that into pdf in the way that's appropriate for the instructions.) One of my problems seems to be that the input is not UTF, i.e. I have configured SciTe badly. Or Windows XP just doesn't like UTF, in which case I'm in trouble. It seems to me that if this problem is solved, MkIV would work. I'm not terribly used to working with encodings in general, so UTF is unknown terrain to me and this doesn't make things easier. The other problem is that if I'm running MkII, it seems that I need to install some fonts, but typescripts seem to be of the "email me and you can get a typescript" way. Or then I just can't understand what the text says; since postscript started working by default a few years ago, I've avoided the font department altogether. :/ The third, and very minor problem, is to get the stand-alone to run MkIV/luatex by default. I'm sure there's a switch I can use to tell it to always use luatex instead of pdftex, I'm just too stupid to figure it out myself. And of course I'll only need this if MkIV is the best solution to my problem... If that will solve the problem and if it can be done with minor changes (like adding something to path or something), I'm willing to switch to a different editor for Russian (or, rather, Cyrillic) - especially if that will happily coexist with SciTe. Any hints on what to do next? Mari (Tip of the day: never promise anything to a customer before you've checked that it is doable in reality, not just in specs.)

Remove leading spaces

When a function is called, I would like to remove any leading space. Then the function can control the spacing. If I don't remove spaces, it then makes a difference whether or not I have a space before the function is called. I would like the output of the following two lines to be equal: This is a \MyFunction[1] test. This is a\MyFunction[1] test. However, they are not because the first line has a space before the function call. \def\MyFunction{\dosingleempty\doMyFunction} \def\doMyFunction[#1]{% \processaction[#1]% [1=>\medspace dog ,% 2=>\medspace cat ,% default=>\ldots]% } \starttext Test1: This is a\MyFunction[1] test. Section format using /def

I, apparently, do not understand the syntax and/or uses of /def. I am trying to make section heads appear in all caps and underlined. I originally tried to just use \setuphead, but found that I using the "textcommand" option I could only either capitalize or underline and not both. I then figured that using a macro was my next best option. Below is what I tried and it does not work. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? \def\mysectionhead{\WORD\underbar} \setuphead[section] [number=no, textcommand=\mysectionhead, style={\tfa\bf}] Thanks, Mike

Bug? thinrule in natural table & MKIV

However, when I switched to MKIV (both current and beta) I got the following error message: !
