Combining figures.

Hi All,I am working on a text that contains many combined figures, some side by side, some arranged vertically. I use, following “ConTeXt, an excursion”, \startcombination[1*2] and \startcombination[2*1] respectively. The first one works, the second doesn’t, that is, it also places the figures one above the other. It happens both with the “MacTeX”-version of ConTeXt and with the minimals. What can I do to place two figures side by side with a single caption? Thanks in advance, Robert Blackstone

Hi, Does \obeyspaces work in tables? I cannot determine how to make it do so. simpleslides ubuntu jaunty (9.04)

Dear list members, I'm a new user of conTeXt and was interested in the simpleslides module. It looks great and partially works but most graphical stuffs don't work : I've only the text using Mark IV, and get some of the graphical effects with Mark II (but not all) (I've attached pdf output and logs). I use a freshly installed ubuntu 9.04 I've installed the module (in my ~/texmf). I've added in /etc/environment the variable TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c in order for luatools and MarkIV to work. cf http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Debian_installation#Postscript:_Mark_IV (the exemple file works) versions : $ texexec --lua -v TeXExec | version 6.2.0 - 1997-2006 - PRAGMA ADE/POD $ luatools -v LuaTools | version 1.2.0 - 2006+ - PRAGMA ADE / CONTEXT $ luatex -v This is LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.28.0-2009041620 I hope that you have some hints on what I might have wrong, In mark IV, it looks like I have a version problem for metafun, but I'm not sure and don't now how to get the version number. gVim complier plugin question

I was trying to get the context compiler plugin for gvim working, but I think I may be misunderstanding something about the instructions. I keep getting a "compiler not found" error when I try to set the compiler so I must have done something wrong. I downloaded the texexec.vim plugin from http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1925 and copied it to /usr/share/vim/vim70/compiler/texexec.vim I then opened a context file with gvim and typed ":compiler=texexec" and I get "E666: compiler not supported: =texexec" It seems like it must be a small mistake, but I'm at a loss to figure out what it is. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Thanks, Mike

How can I compare picture variables in metapost?

Hi all, I want to draw some paths that won't intersect with each other in metapost. Those paths are generated "randomly," e.g., draw 100 circles without any intersections. I use a very stupid way like: ============================================= % randomseed:= day + time*epsilon ; save minL ; numeric minL ; minL = infinity ; z[0] = origin; for i=1 upto 99 : z[i] = (uniformdeviate 1 , uniformdeviate 1 ) ; for j=0 upto i-1 : if abs(z[i]-z[j])<minL : minL := abs(z[i]-z[j]) ; fi endfor endfor for i=0 upto 99 : draw fullcircle scaled 2cm shifted (z[i] scaled (2cm/minL)) withcolor (i/100, (100-i)/100, abs(50-i)/100); endfor ============================================= The randomseed made me crazy, for one time it compiles fine and sometimes it just flows out which I think may due to the size of the picture becomes big enough. I think a better way could be like this: pick a random point, fill it with color, pick another point and use "clip currentpicture to somepath" and determine whether it is blank or not. But "if currentpicture=nullpicture" won't work, so I'm stunned. Hi LuaTeX developers, LuaTeX after (including) Id: luatex.web 2366 2009-05-03 08:06:14 has a problem with pdf inclusion. I get an error: This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.40.0-2009050518 (Web2C 7.5.7) \write18 enabled. ... mplib : loading 'metafun.mp' from 'C:/contextminimal/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/28feea729d47a604679d2be4cb698c93/formats/cont-en-metafun.mem' !LuaTeX error: xpdf: reading PDF image failed ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! >From older posts to the mailing list, it seems that the way to prevent TeX ligatures, specifically -- and ---, in \starttyping...\stoptyping in MkIV is to 1. define a font feature with tlig=no 2. define a font synonym for the monospace font that uses this font feature 3. setup typing to use this font synonym Is this currently the best way to solve the problem? multi page TABLE and placetable

Hi, I'm using TABLE macros for typesetting tables. Since the tables I'm using may get very long, I set "split=yes". This works ... except if I surround a TABLE with \placetable: \placetable[here]{caption} { \bTABLE ... \eTABLE } In such a case a table that is too long to fit on a single page is truncated at page bottom and nothing is printed on the next page. Font and Typescript Questions

Can someone please help me with the following questions so that I can use some of the typescripts that Wolfgang and some others have so kindly made available. I will use font Bera as an example, since I would like to use it. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.6 (1) How do I know if I have font Bera? As in, where on my computer do I look to see if I have font Bera installed? (2) If I do not have the font, how do I install Bera? I see that there are files on ctan. Where should I save this? (3) Once I have installed the font and I have downloaded Wolfgang's type-bera.tex file, where do I save this file? Can I save it where I save the third-party modules. Once I save it, do I run the usual texhash, followed by luatools --generate followed by context --make (4) Once I have accomplished the top three steps, how do I use it in a document? Do I just type \usetypescript[bera] \switchtobodyfont[bera,12pt] OR, do I also have to type \usemodule[type-bera] I would really appreciate any help.

Set document version

Hi Hans, ConTeXt has a command (\version[...]) to set the version of the document but as developer there is no way to get access to this value. Can you give us a defined register which can be used from other modules (e.g. fixme). I would even prefer a new command like \setupdocument where you can set the document version (passed down to \version), the name and authour (passed down to \setupinteraction) etc. Wolfgang

Hi guys, How can i get a somewhat recent and stable version where things just work. I've tried --stable and --context=stable which both insist of getting luatex 0.40. mtxrun --verbose --script ./bin/mtx-update.lua --update --make --force --engine=all --context=stable --stable --texroot=$PWD/tex --extras="t-letter,t-mathsets,t-tikz,t-vim" $@ There's a lot of things broken in the current minimals, e.g., bib module, hanging, a error about front and I can't to even seem to use OT fonts. " In fact, I hate transitions :) And I don't need any animations. I just want professionally-looking pdf pages with rich image stuff to assist the speaker, and I believe that Context is well suitable for this. Where I can get simpleslides? I want to give them a try, and see what can be improved. I did not find simpleslides on the wiki, but instead found http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Presentations . Hi, I uploaded a beta just before leaving for bachotek. Quite some structure (lua) code has been overhauled and i need to finish some bits. I can probably fix urgent failures but real fixes have to wait till next week. As I'm redoing the backend as well as cross referencing some interaction features might be broken but normally they are easy to fix (once i know what fails). So, best collect all bugs while i'm away so that i can deal with then at once. Hi, I know that Context is developing rapidly and the top guys here are all very busy with these development efforts. But I thought I would just float this idea. There is an open source mathematics software system called sagemath which aims to be a viable substitute to Mathematica and Maple. The link is http://www.sagemath.org/ There exists a latex package called sagetex, which allows using sagemath functions from within latex. The following link on ctan has some examples http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/sagetex/ Do you think it is possible to do a similar thing in Context? It would be really cool if this functionality is added to Context. What do the experts here think?

startregister produces strange page range ("1-2-3")

With the following minimal file, the index entry for Knuth has the strange page range "1-2-3" rather than "1-2, 2-3". Adding \input knuth a few times in between the two start..stopregister stanzas gives a correct page range (so maybe that change hides the problem). I'm using ConTeXt 2008.10.31 (Mk II) from the Debian unstable packages. Dear Mr. Arnold, questions regarding ConTeXt and modules for ConTeXt are better asked on the ConTeXt mailing list and if you would have done this I could have given you the following answer. The default output format for ConTeXt is PDF since about three years while PSTricks needs the files in PostScript format which requires a intermediate DVI file. To get a DVI file with ConTeXt you could set it either with \setupoutput[dvi] in your document or you use the backend switch on the command line, because the code between the PSTRICKS-environment is written in a external file which is converted to dvi, ps and pdf you have to do this in the pstric-module and not in your document. In my own installation I made a copy from the file m-pstric.tex and added the \dostartTEXapplication macro from the page-app.tex file where I now changed the line \executesystemcommand{texexec --once --batch \bufferprefix \@@texapp.tex}% to \executesystemcommand{texexec --once --batch --backend=dvips \bufferprefix\@@texapp.tex}% and switched from ps2pdf command to pstopdf %\executesystemcommand{ps2pdf \bufferprefix\@@texapp.ps \bufferprefix\@@texapp.pdf}% \executesystemcommand{texmfstart pstopdf \bufferprefix\@@texapp.ps \bufferprefix\@@texapp.pdf}% to get a cropped page for the image. As a last change I added the following two definition to m-pstrics.tex because pstricks.tex use them but are not defined in ConTeXt: \letvalue{@unused}\plussixteen \letvalue{alloc@}\gobblefivearguments After these changes I was able to produce PSTricks images in ConTeXt but people had use never given enough time on the ConTeXt list to answer their questions and fix the problem and so PSTricks support is broken since a long time and this will not change. Indeed, http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals says that |setuptex.bat| is provided in |installation-dir\tex\, but in reality, it sits in i||nstallation-dir\|||. Shoud I correct the wiki or have I overlooked something? Vyatcheslav

I have run a search in all my Pc and i didn't find it. ConTeXt MKIV won't run in TeXShop

Good day! I am a MKII ConTeXt user who is interested in trying out MKIV. Tried installing MKIV on my MacBook (running Mac OS X Leopard) as instructed in Contextgarden but I cannot run it to compile using either TeXShop or the Terminal. Hello, URLs with '#' or '_' in the URL worked fine with LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.37.0-2009033116 and ConTeXt 2009.04.06 21:42 and still work with the newest beta LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.39.0-2009041623 and ConTeXt 2009.04.21 16:11 when compiled with '--xtx'. When compiled with '--lua' I got this error: ! TOCS: part number, custom alternative and margins

Hi all! A while ago I asked how to achieve a particular layout I wanted for part titles in my table of contents. I was given this solution: \definelistplacement[partlist][none]#1#2#3% {\sc\inframed[width=broad,align=right,bottomframe=on,topframe=off,rightframe=off,leftframe=off]{{#2}}} \setuplist[part][alternative=partlist] With that, I get no part number, no page number, a title in small caps and a bottom frame. So far so good. In the same table, I also want my section and subsection titles to indent, at different values depending on levels (the further the section in the hierarchy, the further it indents). I use the margin= parameter for that. When I do that, however, the next part title indents equally to the same level as the last section or subsection did. See the example file toc.tex attached. Obviously, I don't want that. The only way I've found to avoid that is to get rid of the custom alternative, and transfer the \inframed command to a textstyle parameter inside a normal \setuplist[part] command. See toc-2.tex attached. When I do that, however, I can't get rid of the part number. I tried everything I could think about, but to no avail. I'm using MKII+Xetex. (ConTeXt ver: 2008.11.10 21:40 MKII fmt: 2008.11.15 int: english/english) Can anyone help? What is the best solution? Thanks in advance! Jeff

Hi all, I need to typeset some equations and I found out that these commands are undefined or don't work correctly (ver: 2009.04.17 19:32 MKIV): \iint, \iiint, etc. \oint, \oiint, etc. \nabla What is the prefered way of typesetting those symbols? (e.g. \mathop{\int \!\!\! \int} or something like that?) Is there a website or a pdf-file dealing with mathematical symbols in ConTeXt? Thanks Tomas

Which Table Layout Mode

I'm having great difficulty finding a table mode that accomplishes everything I need: Multi-page: no problem Repeating headers: no problem Repeating footers: don't actually need columns in footers, just a table-wide block containing diagrams and abbreviation footnotes. Must appear on every page, though. 'tables' or 'tabulate' mode works OK. lintetables? Horizontal lines: no problem (except linetables?) Alternate row shading: natural tables work fine, don't see how to do this with 'tables' or 'tabulate' mode. linetables? Forced page break at arbitrary rows: [after=\page] doesn't seem to work in natural tables, don't see how to do this with 'tables' or 'tabulate' mode. linetables? I've tried all the table modes, including linetables and can't find a mode that gives me all required features. Is this combination of tabular features not possible? -- david

Macro question - uppercase

Hello, I use the context minimal with updating to lastest beta. when using $\doteq$ in my equation, texexec catch an error: ! Illegal unit of measure (pt inserted). <to be read again> = \buildrel ...mathrel {\mathop {\kern \zerocount #2 }\limits ^{#1}} l.3 Test $\doteq $ ? I check the definition in math-pln.mkii, the \doteq is defined as: \def\buildrel#1\over#2% {\mathrel{\mathop{\kern\zerocount#2}\limits^{#1}}} \def\doteq {\buildrel\textstyle.\over=} The problem seems caused by \zerocount. After comparing with the definition in math-pln.mkiv, I changed it to \zeropoint and texexec run successfully. Regards, Andy

Hi, I have a question regarding framed text. To obtain framed verbatim text that breaks over pages, I use the macro \definetextbackground. I have encountered a slight problem, however: sometimes the upper part of the frame appears on the bottom of the page with no text in it (because there's not enough room). hi! I've a problem with the setuplayout command. is use the following command for the global text: \setuplayout[backspace=3cm,cutspace=2cm,width=16cm,topspace=2cm,header=0cm, textheight=fit,bottomspace=0cm,footerdistance=1cm,footer=0.5cm,footerspace=0cm, bottomdistance=0cm,bottom=0cm] but now the chapters, toc, lists, ... also start 2cm from the top edge of the paper. how can i alter it and such manner that these pages start with, let's say, 5cm from the top edge. regards thomas prochaska

Ahoi, with the latest beta I can't get my LilyPond module to work. It seems that it's not possible to execute any command. I tried \executesystemcommand, \write18 and the old \installprogram. What should work? As far as I can see, shell_escape is enabled. (And it worked before.) Additionally I tried to replace the texmfstart call with mtxrun. While this works: texmfstart --ifchanged="foo-lilypond-1.tmp" --exec bin:lilypond "foo- lilypond-1.tmp" this doesn't: mtxrun --ifchanged="foo-lilypond-1.tmp" --execute lilypond "foo- lilypond-1.tmp" probably because mtxrun doesn't create a md5 file. missing command and wrong lists (index, ToC) in MkIV

With the latest beta, ConTeXt doesn't know "\setupsectionblock" any more (don't know if it actually worked before, but ConTeXt didn't complain). Previously the lists stuff (ToC) didn't work, but that seems fixed now. Hi, I tried this mtxrun --verbose --reload --script fonts but it fails with: MTXrun | using script: /usr/local/share/texmf/scripts/context/lua/mtx-fonts.lua cannot open : No such file or directory I think that this line in mtx-fonts.lua is the culprit: dofile(resolvers.find_file("font-syn.lua")) although this file: font-syn.lua exists. Dear all, I need german Umlaute in my formulas of my master thesis. I used \ddot{a} for ä. It had worked fine until I updated Context yesterday :-(. Producing dvi

Dear All, is it possible to produce dvi in mkiv? What is the command line? Are there limitations (like no opentype, no unicode math)? DVI has to be fit for dvips use. The reason for my question - Asymptote vector drawing tool sets labels by processing PS output of LaTeX and relies on the PS being made by dvips. Sincerely, Michail

Layout module

Hi Patrick, I have two points which should be changed in your module: 1. Use simplecolumns for the text and 2. limit the width for the two columns to the width of the figure because this looks better in a float and the complete graphic can be centered on the page or you change this only inside floats. \usemodule[t][layout] \starttext \placefigure{}{\ShowLayout} \stoptext Can you add the module also to the minimals? Hello, I'm using MKIV and needed syntax highlighting for a few source and config files. I read on the Wiki and on this list that it should be pretty easy to do this in Lua and although I never wrote anything in Lua I just tried it. Maybe the result will be of use for somebody so I tried to post them to this list a few days ago but the mail never showed up. Maybe because of the attachment size. I read on the Wiki that the best place for putting custom formatter files would be the context distribution or http://modules.contextgarden.net but as I'm pretty sure that some stuff is missing and I'm sure there are some bugs included I tried to post them here. Would it be OK to put the files in a section on the Wiki to start something like a repository for verb-*.lua files where it would be easy to extend and correct them? The verb-*.lua files I created are for syntax highlighting of Python source code, Apache http.conf and zc.buildout config files. For the zc.buildout files I used a simple solution and just defined the keywords that appear in a standard Plone buildout.cfg file as I didn't need more. I hope to finish two additional verbatim files for XML and Shell scripts in the next days. As I don't have any experience in writing Lua code I chose to use the tex/context/base/verb-*.lua and the verb-cpp.lua files posted by Shen Chen in http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20081002.173802.460c46fe.en.html) for a start. Additionally I used the vim syntax files and the official Apache documentation. Here is an overview of what is covered: The verb-apa.lua file distinguishes between the following five states: - declarations - strings - sections (like <Directory> and </Directory>) - comments - options The verb-py.lua file distinguishes between the following five states: - all statements, repeats, conditionals and operators - strings (multi line comment wit ''' or """ are supported) - preconditions (import, from, as) - comments - builtins The verb-py.cfg file distinguishes between the following four states: - sections - variables - keywords - comments Regards, Drazen

Appendix receives number instead of letter

Hi, Previously, \startappendices switched the numbering to letters, but with the latest beta appendices receive a number. Numbering does restart from 1, however. Example: \starttext \startfrontmatter \completecontent \stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter \chapter{Normal chapter} This chapter receives a number. \stopbodymatter \startappendices \chapter{Appendix} This chapter should receive a letter A, but gets number 1 \stopappendices \stoptext Regards, Alex
