Dear list, the following are probably bugs in the new math engine as of yesterday's beta (2009.05.14 16:44): 1. The symbols for number sets in Cambria Math aren't taken from the double-struck variant. --- \usetypescript[cambria] \setupbodyfont[cambria] \starttext \math{\naturalnumbers}, \math{\integers}, \math{\rationals}, \math{\reals}, \math{\complexes}, \math{\primes} \stoptext --- 2. Vector arrows look somewhat strange in Cambria Math ... is this perhaps due to the font itself? --- \usetypescript[cambria] \setupbodyfont[cambria] \starttext The arrows should neither extend over the right bracket nor into the primes: \startformula{} [\alpha(\vec{k})\alpha(\vec{k}'),\alpha^\dagger(\vec{k}'')] \stopformula \stoptext --- 3. loading figure in LuaTeX

Dear all, I tried to load figure in LuaTeX, but I couldn't succeed. However, it is perfectly working in ConTeXt and XeConTeXt. I am writing a booklet for use by junior doctors at the hospital where I work. It will contain random bits of data that is available from various online sources such as phone numbers, dosages of exotic drugs, referral routes and assorted things better written down than remembered. Much of it is in tabular form, and I have so far used natural tables. It is intended to be extremely compact so I make many adjustments to save space, such as using multiple columns where appropriate. Some of the things listed would benefit from being sorted such as phone numbers, but I would still like it to be presented in a table (with the added complication that the table will have two columns of names}. Using pseudocode I would like it to work like this: \phone{person c}{54321, 12345} \phone{clinic a}{12345, 54321} \phone{clinic c}{54321, 12345} \phone{person b}{12345} \phone{clinic b}{12345} \phone{person a}{12345} This should automatically be converted to \bTABLE \bTR\bTD person a\eTD\bTD 12345\eTD\bTD clinic a\eTD\bTD 12345, 54321\eTD\eTR \bTR\bTD person b\eTD\bTD 12345\eTD\bTD clinic b\eTD\bTD 12345\eTD\eTR \bTR\bTD person c\eTD\bTD 54321, 12345\eTD\bTD clinic c\eTD\bTD 54321, 12345\eTD\eTR \eTABLE presumably using something like 1. name and number added to a register 2. register is sorted on first field 3. t = total number of entries in register 4. l = number of lines in table, calculated as l=t\2 + t mod 2 3. create a table with l lines where each line has \bTR\bTD name(i) \eTD\bTD phone(i)\eTD\bTD name(i+l)\eTD\bTD phone(i+l)\eTR It would not surprise me if this is implemented somewhere in ConTeXt but I have been unable to find it. I would be very happy to see a solution using lua, but I lack the knowledge to implement it myself. Hi, The minimal Context distributions comes with many fonts. Are there predefined (using mfonts.pdf terminology) simple, body or typeface definitions available for those fonts, or a subset of them? Thanks, Maurício

Multicol float vertical spacing (MkII)

Hello, I have a small problem which nevertheless took already my whole day ... I'm on a multicolumn page and I have to put (numberd) figures in the textflow, at a fix position relative to the text (in this case). No sidefloats. Problem: The vertical space between the float and the following text (= after the float) is way too big. I put the floats with "force"; with "here" its even worse: I get an additional empty space *above* the float. Concerning the different column methods i noticed the following: \startcolumns: I can influence the vertical space (in general) with e.g. "blank=4pt" in the setups. This solves my problem for the moment, but is a bit ugly, because all spaces seem to be affected, also the predefined caption innerspace(!) \startcolumnset: I couldn't find any solution at all, unless grouping everything in \startpacked ...\ \stoppacked, but this of course removes every and any space. The "blank"-option isn't present in columnsets, right? Side question: While trying all this i noticed also that the v-spacing is perfect when i just use "\externalfigure ..." (without place...). But malheureusement I need the captions. Is there any way to get captions with \externalfigure (without float thingies), maintainig/ integrating in the numbering of the "normal" floating figures? I would really appreciate if anybody could show me how to adjust/ eliminate this ugly (faulty?) after float space without disturbing the whole whitespacing on the page. I just uploaded a version of the LilyPond module that works with ConTeXt MkIV latest beta (only a small fix). Documentation PDF is still the old one, since I couldn't compile it. Hi, I'm re-posting my previous reply to a request from Wolfgang Schuster to supply an example that exhibits the problem of headers at page bottom. In my previous reply the attached example was more or less obscurely hidden in a link at the bottom of the Digest. This time I included the example in the e-mail -- it's a bit long I'm afraid. Here's an example of a ConTeXt file where a header occurs at page bottom. The subsection named "Perl snippet" occurs at the bottom of page 2, followed by framed text on page 3. It would be much nicer if the header would be written on page 3. Note: I extracted this example from a real-life text; for some reason the frames in the example are drawn wrongly, but this is beside the point. Publication list indenting

I am trying to get my bibliography list to have indenting on all but the first line of each entry. I tried to apply the solution from http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Shaped_paragraphs but I can't get it to work in the publication list. Circumflex with FreeSerif and FreeSans

Hi When I use the FreeSerif and FreeSans fonts, I notice strange overlappping with words containing vowels with circumflex, such as â, ê, î, ô, û and Â, Ê, Î, Ö, Ü. I made a test case to show you, I hope attachments are allowed here. Thanks. nb: No problem with FreeMono, but I suspect monospaced fonts can't have such problem. nb: There is no such problem when I use the Xetex engine. Hello, I can't get the 'align' parameter to have any effect on label text in definitions. What's the current way to compile a module's documentation with the latest beta MkIV? Neither texexec --luatex --module t-lilypond.tex nor context --module t-lilypond.tex works. Hi, Here's an example of a ConTeXt file where a header occurs at page bottom. The subsection named "Perl snippet" occurs at the bottom of page 2, followed by framed text on page 3. It would be much nicer if the header would be written on page 3. Note: I extracted this example from a real-life text; for some reason the frames in the example are drawn wrongly, but this is beside the point. Hey again, ntg-context. I would like to align one piece of a line to the left, and another piece of the same line to the right, sort of like numbered math equations, except not math. Additionally I would like to do this inside a narrowed block How can I do this? I have tried side-by-side-frames-inside-a-frame but the two pieces of the line just stay clumped together. I have tried '\startalign' and '\(left|right)aligned' to no avail. I have tried '\hfill' but that pushes things past into/past the right margin...

Hi Aditya, Your solution works for normal text following the header. But if I have a framed text with a background, which also has a "before={\testpage[3]}" (\definetextbackground[FramedText][ ...,before={\testpage[3]},...]) and the section starts with such a framed text, it can still go wrong. And I guess it can also go wrong if a section starts with a figure. Is there some way to specify that if less than a certain number of items (lines of text, frames, figures etc.) fit on the remainder of the current page, the next page should be taken? There are days when I swear and yell and curse myself for going over from Word to ConTeXt. But on 9 days out of 10 I pat myself on the back for making the switch. And as I understand, you are writing a new bib module with Lua. What will the internal format of the new bib module be? mptopdf does not work with filenametemplate

Given the following source file foo.mp: beginfig(0); filenametemplate "foo.eps"; endfig; end; running 'mptopdf foo.mp' results in: MPtoPDF 1.3.3 : no filename matches foo (because it is looking for foo.0, of course). I've read that 'filenametemplate' is going to be deprecated in favor of 'outputtemplate': will mptopdf be compatible with that command? Or is mptopdf also going to be replaced by something else (sorry, I'm not following the recent developments very closely)? Nicola

Hello, I'm still curious about using font features. For example, I want to have one typescript with slashed zero, and another with normal one. But using either typescript (see commented lines) results in slashed zeroes. In the luatex case, the fonts are internally converted to the newer 'Type 1 CFF' font format, which is much more compact than 'oldfashioned' Type 1. tlig doesn't work with mode=node

In the last beta, 'tlig' font feature doesn't work with 'mode=node' anymore, that is I can't use it with Arabic: \definefontfeature[default][default][mode=node] \usetypescript[palatino] \setupbodyfont[palatino] \starttext - -- --- \stoptext I'm not sure since when it was broken, but it has been working few betas ago. Hi, the \definelabel command does not work any more in the latest betas. Hi ntg-context. I'm very confused about accomplishing something that to me seems as though it should be quite simple, but has proven for weeks of occasional attempts to be very confusing. I'm finding existing information from the contextgarden wiki and ntg-context archives to be very newbie-unfriendly and inconsistent. I'm compelled to improve the wiki, if only I could comprehend what I would be documenting. What I would like to do is use the full range of TeX-Gyre fonts (and later possibly others) for my existing documents. It is not clear to me... Whether or not I am using MKIV, nor how to determine which engine I am running. If not running MKIV/XeTeX, how to determine which fonts are installed. What the items from the output of "fc-list" or "mtxrun --script fonts --list" correspond to. How to use available fonts, nor where to draw valid parameters from for use in font commands. How to determine what font configurations are available for a given font. Whether I need to write typescripts, nor how to find any existing ones. Whether I need to concern myself with .map or any other font files. Whether I need to configure anything, move any files, etcetera. ...As well as anything else I might need to install or use a font For what it's worth, I have been using the command "texexec" to process my tex files, am using a context minimals downloaded about two months ago, and am running Linux.

Hi, just in case this slipped someone's mind :) I still get an error about an undefined control sequence (\PDFobjectreferenceB) and the footnote marker (star) is not moved with the footnote (\moveright). The attached example code (with overprinting) breaks with the mentioned error. The attached picture shows the problem with the separated footnote marker. It can be created with the other versions (without overprinting) of the \NoteNumber and \MyFootnote macros. Hi, while comparing the PDF of mkii and mkiv I noticed a slight differ in the boundingboxes (bb) of MP figures. While all mkii bb have the form [0 0 w h], the mkiv counterparts use [-1 -1 w+1 h+1]. So the bb of mkiv is enlarged 1bp in all directions. Is this intended? Minimal example and PDF attached. Hi Hans, so you're back from Bachotek and ready to attack the bugs? The beta you uploaded today is still badly broken. Most of this has been reported before; I just collect it here for your convenience :-) 1. The most urgent bug: The beta still fails to generate the files luatex-cache/context/XXX/names.tma and names.tmc. Which means only Latin Modern works, all other fonts fail. I get this both on OS X and linux; I have to use an older version to produce these files and copy them over. Once that is done, fonts work normally. 2. The new structure code doesn't expand xmlflushes in sections. How to prevent header at page bottom

Hi, I have defined my own header: \definehead[myhead][subsection] \setuphead[myhead][ page=no, number=no ] All works fine, except sometimes the head appears at page bottom and the text starts on the next page. Dear all, I am close to give up, but maybe there is a solution... I have a book to typeset literally peppered with hundreds of little drawings which are supposed to appear irregularly surrounded by text flowing around them on all sides. -------------------------------- |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx | |xxxxx-----xxxxxxxxxxxxxx| |xxxxx| |xxxxxx----xxxx | |xxxxx|__|xxxxxx| |xxxx| |xxxxxxxxxxxxxx |__|xxxx| |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx| -------------------------------- I naively imagine that should not be that hard to implement ;) Since we already have overlays it's no problem to place images in arbitrary places. It only remains to drill white holes in the text to make room for them. What about such procedure: 1. While building the line TeX checks if there is any overlay ahead. 2 if so, it puts empty hbox of the overlay width when it reaches necessary distance from the edge. 3. and does so for the number of lines which equal overlay height. Of course that leaves aside the problem of justification and without justification such page would probably look very ugly (I dare not to think if hz optimization, which I really got used to, would still work). Hi guys, I find that the `lines' environment (or description, itemize, etc.) after text in margin does not align right. Consider the following code: \starttext \inmargin{What I want} First line \crlf Second line \vskip 1cm \inmargin{What it renders} \startlines First line Second line \stoplines \stoptext The \crlf approach is the effect I want while the `lines' approach fails to do it. So is it a feature or a bug? Or I understand something totally wrong? I know I can put the \inmargin in the `lines' environment, but this time I really need it outside. Thanks. Custom refcommand for bibtex

Hi, I've little problem concerning the bib module. My university demands a certain style for external references. It seems to be no problem to define a custom style for the publication list but I can't seem to find any way to define a custom citation style. To be more precise: they want a footnote with certain informations about the citation ... at least author(s), year(s), title and if specified the references page. Is there maybe some (easy) way to define a custom refcommand? Then the footnote could be inserted by doing the \cite within a \footnote. Thanks in advance! Andreas Schneider.

tables with notes

I have a dim recollection that this question has been asked before, but I have not been able to find the answer. So please excuse me if this goes over old ground. I have prepared a fairly complex table (using \starttables) that has notes to various entries. What I should like is to • mark the notes with the letters, a, b, c,... • put the notes immediately beneath the table caption (in single column text) and to keep the notes with the table, and • maintain the proper sequence of numbered footnotes in the surrounding text. Any suggestions or pointers to previous discussions will be gratefully received. Alan

XeConTeXt bug report III: Wrong hyperlink

Hi, Hans and Jin-Hwan: When using ConTeXt to produce my documents, I found that all hyperlinks are wrong. And here is a simple test. The tex and pdf files are attached in the mail. The problem will happen when: 1) using pdftex to produce the dvi, and use dvipdfmx to convert the dvi to pdf. 2) using xetex to produce xdv, and xdvipdfmx that xdv to pdf. Open the file in Acrobat Reader, Go to page three, and you can see a hyperlink text "Equation 1", it links to page 2. however, the equation is in page1. The "section 1" or "page 4" should point to page 4, but it point to page 5 now. So my question: - As far as I know, dvipdfmx's ConTeXt support was written by Jin-Hwan. and the hyperlink code is written by Hans. Surely at least one of the two source code files has a cross-ref bug. But I don't know which. Can the bug be fixed? Thanks Yue Wang

XeConTeXt bug report I: strange benchmark

Hi, Hans and Jonathan: I made some testing samples in ConTeXt to test XeTeX. but the result is quite strange. All benchmark are get from the second run: Sample 1: \definefont[a][file:SimSun] \starttext \dorecurse{10000}{ hello {\a 你好}} \stoptext And here is the result: XeTeX: TeXExec | runtime: 7.25 LuaTeX: MTXrun | total runtime: 6.719 This is considerablly ok. So we can say that the font switching is pretty fast. Sample 2: \definefont[a][file:AdobeSongStd-Light.otf] \starttext \dorecurse{10000}{ hello {\a 你好}} \stoptext XeTeX: TeXExec | runtime: 63.65 LuaTeX: MTXrun | total runtime: 8.156 Here I only change the font from SimSun to Adobe Song (the two fonts are almost at the same sice [~10M]). But the xetex result is very differt from the previous run. it consumes one minute to compile the file. Chinese opentype fonts can not be loaded in luatex-plain

Hi Hans, I tried to use Chinese opentype fonts with luatex + plain fmt but I failed. Only with Chinese TTF fonts it can work. Howto add a # sign to a \button URL?

Hallo, I try to send a message from a pdf to a webserver. This works fine, unless the URL has a `#' in it. Then TeX throws an error: ! Illegal parameter number in definition of \!!stringa I tried to work around it with \edef'ing a \doublecross macro which expands to \char35, but this did not work. I also tried some extensive use of \noexpand and \expandafter, but it failed, too. Obviously, there's some \csname...\endcsname stuff going on when creating the URL. Hi, I read the document "Using \startalign and friends" of Aditya (that it's good) and I can't find anything under ams aligned. Is this an equivalent in ConText? [***SPAM***] Bug? \getmarking fails under some circumstances

Hello, I'm new to ConTeXt, so this is perhaps not a bug but a fault on my side. Under some circumstances, the living column heads fail to refer to the subsubject. As you can see from the attached minimal example \startsetups[header] \getmarking[subject]\ $\cdot$ \getmarking[subsubject] \stopsetups will yield something like »Mikrotypografie *«, though it should be »Mikrotypografie * Absatzumbruch«. If you uncomment the \subsubject-line at the end of the example, everything works as expected unless you uncomment the former line, too. A workaround is to add a \vfill\eject just before the next \subject. XeConTeXt bug report II: MetaPost Graphics

However, when 1) using pdftex to produce the dvi, and convert the dvi using dvipdfmx 2) using xetex to produce the pdf using xdvipdfmx the figure is placed at the wrong place. there will be a displacement for all the metapost figures when xetex is used to produce the graphics. I attach the wrong result in the mail. So my question is : - is this a bug in ConTeXt, or in (x)dvipdfmx. can the bug be fixed? Thanks Yue Wang

texts in \component files are not present

Dear all, Text in component files are not included in the attached example. I also put the log file in it. The log shows that the component files were found and complied but their texts were not present in the generated pdf file. I'm not sure whether I did anything wrong in the example or not. narrow space in "\ldots."

Hello ConTeXt folks, I'm quite new to ConTeXt. I like it. It's way more systematic than LaTeX. Here's my first question. When omitting the last part of a sentence, I want four periods: This is a long sentence which\ldots. LaTeX produces equally-spaced four periods, but with ConTeXt, the last space is narrower than the preceding two. (See examples below.) I guess that LaTeX specifically designed its \ldots with this use (sentence-ending four dots) in mind. How can one fix it in ConTeXt? I use the "context" package version 2008.05.21-1 on Debian testing. The LaTeX is from the texlive-latex packages. Hi, some problems with js interaction stuff. I get ! Undefined control sequence. \dopresetfieldsymbol #1->\checkobjectreferences for nearly all interaction fields in mkiv. Mkii compiles, but the pop-up tooltip is only a black box (not the text 'tooltip'). I also had some problems with PDF layer in mkiv (corrupt pdf with older betas; will investigate after this one is fixed). *Not urgent at all.* Minimal example: ---------------- \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext Just a \tooltip{test}{tooltip}. \stoptext Time for some good news. There is nearly nothing left, that I have not tested (well, most is MP related). No further problems here (luatex0.40.1, mpost1.2). And hex colors in mkii work again :) Best wishes, Peter

Two issues related to xetex

Hi, Hans and Mojca: first, (to Mojca) the first-setup.sh script still deletes fontconfig cache when updating on windows. second, (to Hans) unicode-letters.tex is read when we dump plain TeX or LaTeX format in TeXLive. This file is wrote by Jonathan Kew in order to initialize XeTeX. It defines many important unicode properties into XeTeX. However, ConTeXt do not load that file when dumping the xetex format. The file is not even in ConTeXt distribution. I suggest that the file should be loaded. You can find the file in http://scripts.sil.org/svn-public/xetex/TRUNK/texmf/tex/generic/xetex/unico… XeTeX's plain TeX ini file can be find in http://scripts.sil.org/svn-public/xetex/TRUNK/texmf/tex/xetex/config/xetex.… If the file is not loaded, thousands of lines should be copied to third party modules (like the module I announce on the mailing list today) in order to support some language correctly. This method is quite messy, not to say inefficient for loading. Yue Wang

New module t-zhspacing

Dear list: Chinese TeX Society is proud to announce the t-zhspacing module to the ConTeXt society. The module is developed by Yue Wang based on Yin Dian's zhspacing.sty macro package and Jonathan Kew's unicode-letters.tex + xetex interchartoks mechanism. It is designed for the audience who interested perfect Chinese typesetting using ConTeXt and XeTeX. It handles Chinese font loading, switching, line breaking, and punctuation compression rules quite well. Moreover, since the freetype's performance is much better than fontforge's on large cjk fonts, so the document compilation can be much faster. Users are free to visit http://code.google.com/p/ctex-kit/, and the code is in svn (the trunk/zhspacing directory) now. Font switching question

Hi, Hans: I am working on Chinese support on XeTeX/ConTeXt and I almost finished that. I will later upload a module called t-zhspacing to the garden (or CTAN?). But there is one last problem. Let me explain like this. Suppost I have two typescripts (typeA and typeB) and both with complete typeface defined (rm/ss/tt, bf/it/bfit/smcp....) Now I want to do something like this: \usetypescript[typeA] \usetypescript[typeB] \setupbodyfont[typeA] This should be typeA/rm/normal \it and this should be typeA/rm/it \ss and this should be typeA/ss/it %here everything is ok in context \typeB this should be typeB/ss/it %(but context gives me typeB/rm/normal. beta (11.05.2009): hex colors in mkii

Hi, hex colors don't work anymore in mkii (no problems in mkiv). All I get is black (reminds me of a song by the Rolling Stones)... I see a red door and I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black ... Chapter number in right margin?

Hi all, I'm typesetting a double-sided document. And I want the chapter numbers to be in the right margin, while the chapter titles remain in the main text area. So I write \def\MyChapter#1#2 {\inright{#1} #2} \setuphead [chapter] [command=\MyChapter] But it renders such that all the chapter numbers disappear while chapter titles seem normal. Any idea? Hi, there are still some problems with footnotes and overprinting. I have reactivated the old (sorry, non minimal) example for that. But for three problems it is pretty short :) 1. the footnote uses '1' instead of the chosen '*' (set 1) 2. the footnote marker is not bound to the footnote text (only the text is moved right) 3. the problem with the undefined \PDFobjectreferenceB occurs again, if overprinting is used (see different versions of \NoteNumber and \MyFootnote) One additional note to 3.) I have to enable overprinting for both the marker and the text to get the desired result (all should be overprinted). Is this intended? loading bib module breaks colors in tikz figures (mkiv)

Hello, Not that I understand why this happens (bug trigger looks extremely weird), but if I load bib module, the colors in TikZ graphic are lost. Commenting out bib module returns the color back. (I remember reporting lack of colors not so long ago, though I'm not sure if it was in pdftex or luatex.) I'm using - ConTeXt MKIV 2009.05.08 21:48 - LuaTeX beta-0.40.1 - approximately CVS version of TikZ \usemodule [bib] \usemodule [tikz] \starttext \starttikzpicture \filldraw[fill=green!20,draw=green!50!black] (0,0) -- (60:3cm) arc (60:120:3cm) -- cycle; \stoptikzpicture \stoptext Can anyone please confirm the bug? (I often mess with my system too much ...) Hello, I am using Context Mark II + XeTeX. I would like to know the following things. 1. How to use opentype font features. I tried the following code but it is not working. \definefontfeature[myfontfea][+onum] \definetypeface[Libertine][rm][Xserif][Linux Libertine O][default][features=myfontfea] \setupbodyfont[Libertine,12pt] 2. rscale in latest beta

Hi all, the "rscale" key does not work for my Greek module in the latest beta ConTeXt ver: 2009.05.08 21:48 MKIV The font always stays the same size, no matter what value I give. It did work in the version 2009.04.21. I haven't been able to reproduce the error in a minimal file yet., but maybe Hans can say which files are likely to be the culprit so I can run a diff between these two versions? All best Thomas

Dear context users, at first a lot of warm thanks for help and comments on using t-simpleslides. On a different matter, I now have the following problem : I do a lot of testing trying compiling my slides (using the following command : "context essai.tex"). Sometimes, I get errors and an interactive prompt that I kill with either ctrl+C or ctrl+Z (at random). I noticed that my computer was swapping (2Go RAM). With "ps xa | grep lua" I get 34 process. Using "top" and sorting by memory used the processes, I noticed 7 instances of luatex and 5 of texlua on the first page for a total of 800MB of resident memory. Did I miss something using context (I do "context essai.tex" each time that I want compile changes) ? "killall luatex" and kill -15 PID does nothing. Best, Amaël

The reason for setuptex setting all those variables in the old days was to override tetex's environmental variables, but in principle this is not needed at all unless tetex is present on computer. The reason for removing them again was to make sure that Hans' scripts work properly even when no environmental variable is set (which will be the case on TeX Live for example). The only variable change that's really needed is fixing PATH, but it's so convenient to be able to run ". /path/to/setuptex" instead of typing the long export PATH="/path/to/minimals/bin:$PATH" We nevertheless left two or three variables since ConTeXt didn't yet work properly without them, but we'll remove those as well. If anyone uses minimals on tetex, we can create an additional file again that would enable complete isolation. We didn't clean up the windows script yet as it would need some more testing (and we had enough problem by minimals not running at all on unix), but that's still on TODO list ... We also silently added TEXMFHOME (while Hans was not watching), but maybe we need to change the exact path. If you have any particular question or request about that, let us know. Mojca

Multiple letters

Hi all, I have to write a letter to a few dozens candidates in which some parts are not identical. I may have the list of the persons, and the changing part for each of them in a file (named for instance "list-of- candidates.tex") on which each line corresponds to one person and the fields are sperated by commas (or any other suitable character). What would be the best way of coding this in ConTeXt? The tricky thing was that I coiuld not find any clue in the logfile: leaving out both empty curly braces generates no error message and the file typesets beautifully except for this one detail, a vertical instead of the desired horizontal arrangement of two figures. But when one leaves out only one of the empty curly braces the file does not typeset at all and there is a clear (well, fairly clear) error message. Like what happens for instance when one leaves out the {} for the caption after \placefigure[][]. A useful experience anyway. Thanks again. Best regards, Robert Blackstone

But I do not want the figures framed. When I replace that piece with {\externalfigure[NameofFigure]}, the figures are placed vertically, both with [2*1] and with [1*2]. I have uploaded a folder with a small testfile, which on my Mac shows this behaviour, as you can see in the pdf. (For convenience I have entered the two possibilities in the testfile, one of them commented out.) It can be downloaded from http://web.me.com/blackstone.robert/filechute/Combining_Figures.zip.
