Hello again, I want to set up a header which stretches across the margins as well as the text area, so I've defined a layer for use as a background, as follows: \setuplayout[backspace=3.5cm,leftmargin=0.5cm,leftmargindistance=1.0cm] \definelayer[pagenumber][width=3cm,height=3cm] \startsetups layer \setlayer[pagenumber]{Page \pagenumber} \stopsetups \setupbackgrounds[header][leftmargin][setups=layer,background=pagenumber] \starttext \dorecurse{4}{\page[empty]} \stoptext Unfortunately, the page numbers are all '1'. If I change the line: \setupbackgrounds[header][leftmargin][setups=layer,background=pagenumber] to \setupbackgrounds[page][setups=layer,background=pagenumber] the page numbering works, so I can get what I want by adjusting the offsets of the layer. Bug in spacement in mathmode mkiv

Hi Hans, I noticed that in math mode the spacement of some symbols are incorrect while using mkiv (they are correct in mkii). Here is an example %%%%% begin example \starttext Set $a := bc^{-1}$. \stoptext %%%%% end example In this example, there should be a space before and after ":=" as one may see it readily in mkii (and indeed in plain TeX…). Problems in latest beta

In the latest beta, I nearly have everything working for a set of documents that haven't built cleanly in MkIV since Hans started merging the new structure code. Thanks, Hans and others, for the steady progress! I've started reading the new structure code, and I have to say I find it much easier to understand. I have a few remaining problems, that I've discovered so far, that I'd appreciate any help you can give me. First, I still haven't been able to use \placelistofacronyms or \completelistofacronyms to produce a list of acronyms used in my document. Windows PDF viewer with refresh?

Hi All, Sorry for the seemingly trivial question, but does anyone have any advice on the best PDF viewer to use on Windows, for use with Context? I can't even seem to find one with refresh! After years of periodic usage of Context on linux, I am now trying to configure it on a Windows system (for someone else). Reset footnote numbering by chapter?

What is the "official" way to reset footnote numbering by chapter? \setupnote[footnote][way=bychapter] has no effect, searching the mailing list I found \setupnumber[footnote][way=bychapter] which works only with MkIV, so is there a MkII equivalent (I don't use MkII myself, but just to document it in the wiki). \setupnumber[footnote][way=bychapter] works fine except when I use frontmatter environment, after removing the start/stopfrontmatter from this example, footnotes will reset by chapter, or if I put \setupnumber[footnote][way=bychapter] inside one of the chapters. \starttext \setupnumber[footnote][way=bychapter] \startfrontmatter \chapter{One} \input knuth\footnote{chapter one} \chapter{Two} \input knuth\footnote{chapter two} \stopfrontmatter \stoptext Regards, Khaled -- Khaled Hosny Arabic localiser and member of Arabeyes.org team Free font developer

I had a file fully functional, but after I did a "ctxtool --updatecontext" it is not working anymore. it complains with the messages below. I am running in linux Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope. Thanks for the interest. I can run Lilypond from command line from any location. Also, I can run pstopdf, but the fact is that i didn't install GhostScript. But I'm not sure if it works, bacause when I run it it says nothing and exits. When I compile my Lily example, lily1-lilypond-1.tmp is created in both document dir and lilytemp subfolder. Hi, I'm testing ConTeXt's imposition abilities on a cd booket project. I'd like pages to be shifted in order to compensate paper thickness. Running the following code leads to pages that are properly shifted ; but when uncommenting the line with \setuparranging, pages aren't shifted any longer. What's wrong with my code ? Lilypond module problem

Hi Mojca, Christopher, Hraban, Wolfgang, the new lilypond module don't build new lilypond pdf files when I change the tex input file. In the log i get: system : module lilypond loaded (c:/contextminimal/texmf-local/tex/context/third/lilypond/t-lilypond.texMTXrun | file './lilytemp/lily1-lilypond-1.tmp' is unchanged MTXrun | file './lilytemp/lily1-lilypond-1.eps' is unchanged loading : LilyPond module My testfile lily1.tex adopted and slightly changed from Vyatcheslav \usemodule[lilypond] \starttext There are some notes \lower 8.2pt\hbox{\lilypond[fragment=true]{\relative c' {c d e f}}} embedded in this line. \stoptext Perhaps this is a feature? Hello, Sorry if you get this email twice. I tried posting while I wasn't yet member of the mailing list. I didn't find where I can get more informations about this issue: I want to change the apparance of a \section so I did: \setuphead[section][style=\bf] \starttext \section{foo} \subsection{bar} \stoptext However, subsection is also in bold. If y do textstyle instead of style, then subsection doesn't inherit the style. So I have two questions: – in which documentation is described what parameters are inherited or not? – how can I change the formating of a section without changing the subsection? MKIV doesn't support units module?

Well, I shouldn't say the module units is not fully supported, but it won't give me what I want in MKIV. Those units it made are in italic shape but I really need them to be upright. t-lilypond.tex calls invalid lilypond command-line option

Greetings from a new user! When trying out lilypond from context for the first time yesterday, I found that t-lilypond.tex invokes lilypond with a command-line option "-b", which is not valid in lilypond 2.12. \def\LP{texmfstart --ifchanged=\lily!filename.tmp --exec bin:lilypond -b eps -dno-gs-load-fonts -dinclude-eps-fonts \lily!filename.tmp} To illustrate the problem: I was using the "Starlight" sample on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/LilyPond . Well, I wrapped the sample code in \starttext ... \stoptext . When I changed "-b eps" to "-dbackend=eps", lilypond executed successfully and I started getting proper results. (Though, please note, I had to delete the various temporary files produced in the unsuccessful attempts first.) Is this a known problem? Best wishes-- --Richard Chonak

Hello, Just to let you know - thanks to John Bowman (Michail Vidiassov is also working on it) these are some latest posts from asymptote developers on their forum - if anyone would like to play with asymptote, feel free to test. I didn't take a look, but John Bowman says that he needed null.tex to get context into interactive mode for some reason. Any clue about that? Mojca PS: I really really have to avoid the temptation to get distracted in the next few days/weeks unless I find an excuse that I need to make 3D/movies for my reports (which is not so unlikely to happen after all :) I have converted asycolors.sty; if anyone wants to take a look at asymptote.sty feel free to take it over. I might come back to it, but not right now. My quick first impression is that it does something similar to t-gnuplot, t-r, t-vim, t-lilypond, etc., that is: it defines some high-level commands, writes a file, lets asymptote process it and then includes the resulting graphic back. PPS: Recent Asymptote logs say "Updates to facilitate TeXLive builds." Sounds promissing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Good news: After digesting the advice /.../, I have been able to implement full support for a context tex engine in 2D. First of all, with TeXLive 2008 it is necessary to configure both lua and context: luatools --generate context --make We also rely on the empty tex file misc/null.tex. Hopefully everyone has that. We use this to get into context interactive mode, for the tex pipe (phase 1 of Asymptote's 2-phase typesetting system): context misc/null This was a crucial trick that I did not see documented anywhere. I didn't like the need for the \hbox but I too could not find a way around this; it seems that context takes liberties with the vertical spacing (glue?) otherwise, in a seemingly unpredictable manner. I was able to work around the one problem that I could forsee, with \eject (newpage() in asy, for multipage output). Everything appears to be working: label clipping, minipage, and even functionshading. This was the benefit of using specials; once the high-level code was in place, all of the low-level support was ready to go. The only thing that I haven't tested is inlinetex mode with the context tex engine. Could someone please test this for me? Now all that needs to be done is for someone familiar with context to port asymptote.sty to a context module. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I forgot to mention that context support is committed to svn and will be in 1.74 release (likely tomorrow). Hello, I gave a try to LiliPond today, but it doesn't work for me. 1) I've installed LilyPond 2.12.2 on Windows 2) Ran a simple example \usemodule[lilypond] \starttext There are some notes \lilypond{ \relative{bes a c b} } embedded in this line. \stoptext 3) And got dummy image What's wrong? Landscape printing

Hello, I made a document that needs to be printed in landscape orientation on letter paper. I have this in the document: \setuppapersize[letter,landscape][letter,landscape] It looks fine in xpdf, but when I print the page has a very wide left margin and the last column of my table is off the right edge of the page. I'm using this print command: lpr -Plj5l -o landscape <filename> I also tried printing from within xpdf, with the same command and the same result. Thanks for any help. Roger

Is this an encoding problem?

Hi, I'm using the lines below in the start of a book '.tex' file. It selects the 'gentium' pre-defined typeface, and the file itself was done using utf8. However, a few unicode characters desapear or cause small problems, like these (unicodes between 2012 and 2015): ― (before spoken text) - (hyphen) I thought they could be missing from the font, but I have already used gentium by just loading the font, before I learned about typefaces. (I did download the font from its site, however, instead of using that from minimals.) Did I do anything wrong? With the following sample and MkIV \starttext \setupfootnotes[location=text] This\footnote{Or that, if you prefer.} is a sentence with a footnote. \placefootnotes \stoptext I get: ! Undefined control sequence. \doplacenotes ... \endgroup \the \everysetupnotes <to be read again> \fi <to be read again> \stoptext l.5 \stoptext I think \everysetupnotes in strc-not.tex, line 913 should be \everysetupnote, but after fixing it the output isn't correct, any ideas? updates without rsync

Gentlemen and Ladies, I am using ConTeXt on a company Windows PC behind two firewalls with no possibility of accessing or changing the firewalls. I've tried to update using the minimals installation and rsync, but nothing gets through. What is the recommended method of updating to the latest ConTeXt when rsync is not an option? The last time I tried, I downloaded cont-tmf.zip from http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-1.htm and unzipped the contents to overwrite everything in texmf-local. Is this still the best way? Thanks. Hi, I have my environment of context that defines the theorems and lemmas like amsthm in latex. For example, for lemmas, I have: \defineenumeration [lemma] [text={Lemma},headstyle=bold,between=\blank,titledistance=0em,textdistance=1em, stopper={.\space},location=serried,left={\bgroup\bf},right={\egroup},width=fit,style=italic] The question is how can I get the typical argument of lemmas: "Lema 4.1 (superadditive lemma)"? How can I add the possibility that lemma _could_ have one argument (the phrase in parentesis)?. I'm not a TeX programmer, such a ConTeXt user. Any hint? Thanks, Xan.

KR itemize fails with latest beta

Hi, I've downloaded the beta today, which fails on one of my itemizes using the KR numbering scheme. Dear all, as said by the title of the e-mail, I try to put the page number in the middle (both vertically and horizontally) of the margin. I tried a custom command like \def\mypagenumber#1{% \vfill #1 \vfill } \setuppagenumbering{location=margin,command=\mypagenumber} but, unfortunately, I got an error message on the \vfill. For those who keep an eye on the source ... i'm rewriting ppchtex and it will be integral part of the core of mkiv (so that we have chemistry on board). It's not yet finished but i'm getting there. Hi all, with the newest ConTeXt (2009.05.27 11:27 MKIV) and luatex (beta-0.41.0-2009052623) I get a strange effect. If i use \placecontent all is as expected, but if I use \completecontent the click on chapter 3 in the table of content jumps to chapter 2 in the pdf. 2 jumps to 1. Seeking a Deeper ConTeXt: Questions for Initializing

Hello, My name is John and I'm a nearly brand new TeX convert. All it took was one letter I wanted to look nice and now I know I will never craft an important document in another format again. Now, an obvious entry point is LaTeX, and indeed my first TeX document used this macro package. However, I couldn't help but stumble across the ConTeXt project in my investigation of the TeX landscape. The seemingly distinct separation of style from content, evidenced by the print versus the screen versions of some of the manuals, instantly endeared me. Within the same week, I found the comp.text.tex newsgroup. Lo and behold there was a quite active thread on LuaTeX, which I had just finished reading a presentation and a couple papers on the night before. On of the issues being discussed was the lack of a LaTeX document class for "thesis". This also involved discussion of LaTeX's shortcomings. I wrote into the thread that based on my (albeit completely theoretical) understanding, ConTeXt would be a wiser choice as a macro for any new department to begin requiring TeX documents. This was based on my vague understanding of the separation of environment from the content, as it were, and also on the multiple outputs available for the manuals. Since I see screen formatting as equally important, if not more, than paper formatting, it only made sense to me that the equivalent of a unversity specific documentclass in LaTeX would be a simple environment file in ConTeXt. This leads me to some questions I have about how great a fit for me ConTeXt actually is. 1) Can environment files be used across documents, or is it generally understood that every ConTeXt document requires its own environment formatting? (The latter is the view of someone on c.t.t, who said his perception of ConTeXt was that it was for typesetting individual documents and had less application beyond that domain.) 2) What is the state of XML output for ConTeXt files? I have to say I will find it hard to justify using TeX for documents if it means they are not translatable to XML easily. I'm also interested in any RDF support ConTeXt might have. I am just beginning my journey into TeX, and wish to learn the best macro package available. To me it seems like this is ConTeXt hands down, however the two questions above will indeed determine ConTeXt's actual utility in my case. Regards, John C. Haltiwanger P.S. I do not understand what you mean. Could you explain? I stopped trying to use sections because I read somewhere in the archives that sections cannot be used 'recursively' like this. I have instead been trying to use definitions. With regards to other approaches, I have been trying to use several different dimensions to solve this problem but none of them seem to work as expected inside the head of a definition inside a "narrowed", such as \localhsize and \makeupwidth, which mangle things in unexpected ways. Dear all, I'd like to use "circled number 1", "circled number 2", ... as bullets of itemized block. There is an explanation how to define a personal bullet in the manual. For each \item the same bullet is used. But I want bullets automatically changed to the next character in unicode table. Hello, I've been happily using a fairly old version of Context for a while (ConTeXt ver: 2008.08.05 18:47 MKII fmt: 2008.11.14 int: english/english) but decided that I perhaps ought to try to update to something more modern. I tried to get the minimals for Windows by downloading context-setup-mswin.zip, unzipping it to a new directory and running first-setup.bat from a command window. On the output in the command window, I get a number of rsync error messages, the first of which is: rsync: failed to connect to contextgarden.net: Connection timed out (116) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(122) [receiver=3.0.2] followed by lots of other warnings and errors and ultimately failure! Hello, I finally decided to learn lua and start making use of it in ConTeXt. I was quite excited to find examples of interfaces in the fourth part of "A New Kind of TeX" paper. It would be really useful if someone could give examples how they could actually be used, at least some of them e.g. command.insert, command.hbox, command.vbox, tex.parindent I think it would also be quite useful to propose a limited set of most useful interfaces, something like the Top Ten ConTeXt commands. Hi again ntg-context. I have been working on my own CV/Resume module. Up until now I've just been asking about specific bits of the implementation of this thing I want to do, but perhaps that was a mistake as it hasn't really helped progress much, so: What I am trying to achieve is to define some three-argument command to give a section/subject header and a date, and then a block of text. The header and date should be on the same line, but aligned in either direction (subject aligned left, date aligned right) This block of text underneath it should be indented and able to include an instance of the same command. Available fonts and using them

Hello all, I have read many of the documents from the Wiki on using fonts, but I am still not sure of one or two, probably obvious, things: 1) I'm being asked to use Arial font (not my choice!) and I see from searching the context tree that there are .afm files, .tfm files and .map files with 'arial' in the name. Does this mean I can use Arial out of the box? If so, how? I've tried putting \setupbodyfont[arial,10pt] in my environment file, but it does nothing. I've tried various other things as well, copied but only half understood, from the other documents, but none of them work either! I could follow the guide on installing a new font, but if it's already available then I'd rather not! 2) How do I find out what fonts are available "out of the box" and how do I invoke them? Applying effects to figures

Hello, I just thinkig... Is there a way to apply an effect to inserted images? Say, I need to make a shadow around all of screenshots included, and it is too laborous to apply the shadow to them in an editor just in order to have screenshots changed in next document version. Dear all, I have a bibliography created in BibDesk. I insert it in my .tex file using \setupbibtex[database={IndexHag},sort=author] and with the other commands I get my bibliography printed beautifully. I assign keywords in BibDesk and they appear in a list in the .bbl file for example as \keywords{Anderson, Columba, Colum Cille, Adamn{\'a}n, hagiography, hagiographer, saints lives} In the bibmod.pdf guide it says that \keyword KEYWORD Just text (for use in indices) \keywords KEYWORDS Just text (for use in indices) I have a very long bibliography and it would be great to automatically generate indices based on the keywords that do not appear in the bibliography itself. Hi, I have a new book to design, but I don't know how to do page/content conditional processing). Please help me:) - I want my chapter page (first page of each chapter) to be really distinctive. that is, I define a dark color background, and want all the text on the first page set in white. how can I do that? for example \chapter{hello} \dorecurse{10}{\input zapf } % all the characters in the first page should white, others should set in black. - I want to insert graphics and images. all the graphics are inserted using \placeexternalfigures. I want all the pages where the insertion happens to be quite distictive (that is, have a very narrow text layout, and leave the large margin for the figures. However, when a page starts, TeX does not know wheter or not an external figure will be placed on this page, so it really has no idea whether this page should be set narrower or not..... how can I do that? Ahoi, (1) there's an ongoing thread on the German mailing list (TeX-D-L), if it would be possible to implement weighted(?) hyphenation, i.e. that some breaks are better than other, e.g. Do-nau---dampf--schiff---fahrt Wa-ren---wirt--schaft Eu-ro-pa---par-la--ment (In InDesign I can suggest such priorities if I add words to the user dictionary.) (2) Uses ConTeXt the same hyphenation algorithm as LaTeX? Or one of the newer projects? (perhaps SiSiSi?) (3) Further, I wonder why \hyphenation{} is case dependend - in my last project "Secretary General" was wrongly hyphenated, but \hyphenation{se-cre-ta-ry} didn't fix it, I needed \hyphenation{Se-cre- ta-ry}. When I do: \startformula z_k = \startcases \NC x_k \MC 1 \leq k \leq N \NR \NC y_{k-N} \MC N+1 \leq k < N+M \NR \stopcases, t_k = \startcases \NC r_k \MC 1 \leq k \leq N \NR \NC s_{k-N} \MC N+1 \leq k < N+M \NR \stopcases. \stopformula the dot and the comma appear too much separate from cases. How to make a stretched pdf file

Hi guys, This may sound crazy, but I have to do a presentation with a stretched output. The thing is, I have a laptop with a normal screen, and it'll be plugged to a very big wide screen monitor so that people can see the slides on the big screen. I have to look at my laptop and present for the people, so what I'm thinking is make a stretched output on my 4:3 screen which looks very narrowed and then the effect on the screen will be just as normal. Thank you for help. It worked if I use the absolute path in LuaTeX, but it is not working in ConTeXt and XeConTeXt. French typography is back

Hi again, I have been reading all threads about the French typography in this mailing list, however the current solution is alas far for perfect. The command \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] was a good idea, but it only deals with spacing. French typography rules not only tells us that there should be a narrow, or a normal space before some punctuation marks like :, ;, , !, ?, « or », but also that theses spaces must be non breakable otherwise line breaking could occur just before a punctuation mark (and this is very bad). Take a look at the following example: \section{Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée?} With the current frenchpunctuation command, we got: Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée ? We should obtain: Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée ? Of course we could achieve this manually by adding the correct NNBSP like this: \section{Production locale indigène ou production romaine importée\,?} But I believe the whole point of TeX is to let the engine make all the typographic stuff. The best would be to get rid off \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] and adapt the frenchb Babel module from Daniel Flipo (source and explanation here http://daniel.flipo.free.fr/frenchb/ ), as a module (t-french modification), or when loading the language, but I really don't know how hard it would be since it handles a lot more than just punctuation marks. hi, I tried use the "mptopdf" command to convert a figure generated by "mpost" into a .pdf file, and got following error: !pdfTeX error: pdftex.exe (file ec-lmr12): Font ec-lmr12 at 600 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! mtxrun initialization bug

I did a fresh install of the minimals today and observed a fleeting, obscure mtxrun bug: $ context myfile did not find the script mtx-context.lua $ mtxrun --script /usr/local/context/tex/texmf-context/\ scripts/context/lua/mtx-context.lua myfile ran fine, as now does all subsequent runs of "context myfile". So something gets initialized, but is not found by default. You will only notice this upon a (totally) fresh install. Alan
