Math problem

Hi all, I'm trying out ConTeXt Math. The very most of the samples of the TeXbook work very nice. I only found one problem, \atopwithdelims seems not to work o.k. That results in not adapting delimiters for \choose, \brack and \brace. Thanks for asking. The problem is so simple from PowerPoint view. I want to place a logo of my academic institution on the front page, above the slide title. I can guess its x,y coordinates, but cannot understand how to place it there. I know something about overlays, but it seems that they can add an image to a text already placed somewhere. How to "unfill" a picture?

Hi, I got a problem in metapost. If I want to draw a ring, and use the code: fill fullcircle scaled 2cm ; unfill fullcircle scaled 1cm ; The inner part is not transparent, it has the color of "background" variable which is "white" by default. This case is a minimal example, I actually wanna draw something more complex, like the glyph "Q" and I know the inner path and outer path. verb-sql.tex seems not to work correctly. Is it broken or am I doing something wrong? I would expect comments to be colored differently, but only start and end character are. When I run PL/SQL through the formatter, variable names as bar_foo get only the _ colored, etc.

Problem on switching typefaces

In the example below, all text printed on body font is okay. However, the text inside braces disapears. Problem seems not to be with specific typeface, as 'chorus' shows properly when used as body font. Also, changing chorus for others (palatino, chermes, schola, pagella etc.) do not solve the problem. What do you think I'm doing wrong? Hello, I would like to ask a question about empty lines in "\starttabulate ... \stoptabulate" block. I have defined the following float object description for placing code listings in text: \definefloat[codelisting][code listings] Then I use it together with "typefile", "\starttabulate ... \stoptabulate" and "splitfloat" to split source code listing to multiple pages: \starttext \start \setupcaptions[location=top] \splitfloat [lines=auto] { \placecodelisting [here] [codelisting:homework.cpp] {File {\em homework.cpp} contents} } { \starttabulate[|lp(1.0\textwidth)|] \NC \typefile[option=C, tab=8, palet=colorpretty, numbering=line]{../homework.cpp} \NC \SR \stoptabulate } \stop \stoptext Everything works fine except that empty lines that were present in the file "homework.cpp" do not appear in the listing. I have tried to replace "\starttabulate ... \stoptabulate" with "\starttable ... \stoptable" - in that case empty lines are shown, but splitting no longer works, that is text is truncated to one page and no figure title appears. I have in hand a huge document (587 modules) in xml DocBook format. It constitutes the documentation for Gimp. I also have the Context xml manual but can't seem to figure out how to make it work. The root document (or what I assume is the root document) contains statements like this: <part> <title>Getting Started</title> <chapter id="introduction"> <title>Introduction</title> <xi:include href="introduction.xml"/> <xi:include href="introduction/whats-new.xml"/> </chapter> and so on. When I tried simply texexec gimp.xml I got a one page document that listed the titles in one long string but none of the content of the subdocs referenced. So I added near the top \defineXMLenvironment [gimp] {(} {)} \enableXML and got more or less the same results. Hallo, gentlemen. I've just tried to install the latest stable ConTeXt minimals on my new system (SuSE Linux 11.1). The system downloaded itself (via rsync) all right, but it isn't able to create formats (MarkII; I don't know how to use MarkIV). If I try run texexec --make --all manually, I get this error: ...<TEXROOTDIR>/tex/texmf-linux-64/bin/mtxrun:8707: attempt to concatenate a nil value What am I doing wrong? How can I install it? Dear gang, [mkiv only] What is the best available math font for use with Pagella/Palatino? [Hint: it's not LM] I had to roll my own typescript so what I need to fill in is the commented line below \definetypeface [pagella_ar] [rm] [serif] [pagella_arabic] % [pagella_arabic] % \definetypeface [pagella_ar] [mm] [math] [palatino] [default] Uncommenting the above gives me an incomplete math font that does not look good. Any ideas on getting this right? Is there an otf euler option? Lots of problems in mkiv

I've recently started using mkiv because of the fonts, but I have found lots of things that don't work. The trouble is, I don't know if it's just me, or whether I need to go back to mkii until things settle down. Can someone, PLEASE, tell me if they get any of the following problems with mkiv (I've included code snippets): Everything below works perfectly in mkii. 1) References to equations appear as '??' in the final document \placeformula[eq:pythag] \startformula a^2 = b^2 + c^2 \stopformula Pythagoras proposed \in{equation}[eq:pythag]. 2) References to footnotes appear as '??' inside \startlocalfootnotes...\stoplocalfootnotes \startlocalfootnotes This has a note.\footnote[fn]{Footnote.} See note \note[fn]. \stoplocalfootnotes 3) References to sections are repeated (e.g. reference to section 1 appears as '11' or ref to section 1.1 appears as '1.11.1') \section[sec:one]{Section one} It was in \in{section}[sec:one]. 4) \digits command falls over at periods or commas with "\textfont1 is undefined (character 58)." \digits{1.6} 5) \infull command does not work for abbreviations: falls over with "Missing } inserted." \abbreviation {KF} {Kalman filter} Rudolph Kalman invented the \infull{KF}. But I found that the "fontdata.cache" in font-def.lua is set to "no", so I can't get the boundingbox information of those punctuation glyphs in my module. I want to know why set to "no" as default. I would like to use this package for drawing circuits: http://home.dei.polimi.it/mredaelli/circuitikz/index.html The examples are in Latex, but I imagine it could be used in ConTeXt since it's written using Tikz. How can I do that? Symbol join of \ll and equal

Hi, I just want to know if there is a symbol that join \ll and = like \leq joins < and =. If not, it's possible to "make" that symbol (that has << in upper and - in bottom; like \leq but with two <<)? Thanks in advance, Xan. Hi, i found a few bugs in the new structure code for mkiv. 1. the dot after numbered items is missing \starttext \startitemize[n] \item first item \item second item \stopitemize \stoptext 2. indices in headers work not in interactive mode \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext \section{Section one\index{section}} \stoptext 3. \\ generates a backslash but was a space before \starttext text\\text \stoptext to be continued ... \setupcaption stopper does not work in mkiv

hi, all! i have been trying to produce "Figure 1." in the figure caption of my document using mkiv and i just couldn't. i've searched through the ntg-context archives and the net for solutions but none seems to work. however, when i try the solutions posted (e.g. \setupcaption[figure][stopper={.}]) using XeConTeXt or MKII, i get the result i need. can anybody tell me how to go about this in mkiv? also, how do you go about producing a "Table 1.1" or a "Table 1-1" in the captions? couldn't find the answer in the manuals or in the web. any help would be greatly appreciated. Dear list, I'm part of a design group Open Source Publishing, and we use ConTeXt for a few months now. The main goal is to produce a 200+ pages multi- lingual art book for which we have in the past months some exchanges with kind members of the list about font install and Xetex. I currently work more on the design itself. To finish on time, avoid loosing time on some hazardous/random errors, and also learning ConTeXt more "from the inside", we're looking for a person interested to have a commissioned work -for a fair price per day- to help us crossing the last technical problems (some of them still unknown and only potential). It's not easy for us to plan the exact amount of work, but it will certainly be closely linked to : - ConTeXt - Xetex (or another solution to use custom fonts) - Pictures - Final production of CMYK PDF's for the printer We work in Brussels but are able to travel to the Netherlands without problems. A first meeting will probably be helpful to go to more details. We'll try to push the project as far as possible this month and in July to be able to print the book in August. Bug in mark to ligature handling

Marks don't get positioned correctly unless all marks are supplied, if one mark is omitted, the next mark will be positioned at the first anchor point, not in the second one etc, in some cases it'll even not positioned on the anchor point at all. In the attached sample, the first word in the line is correct, subsequent ones aren't. Is there any "leftoffset" and "rightoffset" possibilities for \framed (in natural tables) ?

I have the following challenge: I am using natural Tables (e.g. \bTABLE) and want to have a larger left/right offset than the top/bottom offset for the table cells. The "offset" parameter (which I believe is from the \framed command) works fine, but assigns equal offset to all sides of the table cell. possible problem with setuptex

When loading minimals with a shell script it appears that setuptex takes arguments from the calling shell script: script called as "script --current" contains: ... source ./setuptex ... This result in the following error message: mktexlsr: Done. The argument "/Users/hans/TeX/context/current/tex/--current" is not a valid TEXROOT path. There is no file "/Users/hans/TeX/context/current/tex/--current/texmf/ tex/plain/base/plain.tex" Setting "/Users/hans/TeX/context/current/tex" as TEXROOT instead. I guess this cannot be the intent of setuptex. It was the intention to just use /Users/hans/TeX/context/current/tex/ as the TEXROOT path. Is there a simple solution? Hans van der Meer

Hello members, there is some problem. After I changed to Ubuntu version 9.04, ConTeXt is not working anymore as I expected. minimals and TeXShop

The directives in the ContextGarden for working with the minimals in TeXShop are not working for me on MacOSX. I installed the minimals in ~/TeX/context/beta and then set the TeXShop engine script to: export TEXROOT="~/TeX/context/beta/tex" export PATH=$TEXROOT/texmf-osx-ppc/bin:$PATH export TEXMFCACHE="$TEXROOT/texmf-cache" context "$1" This corresponds to the recipe step 3 of "TeXShop installation and configuration". The result in TeXShop's console window is disappointing: MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' Prefixing to the engine script with the recommended: ~/TeX/context/beta/tex/setuptex does not help. In fact $TEXROOT appears not to have been set, witnessed by the following output: Setting "/Users/hans/TeX/context/beta/tex" as TEXROOT. I need a table that has local notes, but have not been able to get them into the proper position (at the left margin of the table) or the the proper length ( extending full length of table if needed). I have absolutely no knowledge of Chinese, but I am publishing a review which inserts two Chinese characters into a document as follows, third century alchemist Ge Hong 葛洪 as another So which of the two Chinese modules on http:// modules.contextgarden.net/ should I install or do I need them both? Hi, i'm a little bit puzzled by the results of the following test file, using the 3SIDE imposition schema from Willi ( http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Imposition#Additional_schemas ). The results consists in pages 1|2|3 on the recto of the sheet, and pages 4|5|6 on the verso. * Is it really the intended result ? * If so, I don't understand how can \dosetuparrangement{3}{1}{6}{4}{2} give 1|2|3 // 4|5|6 . What's the rationale ? Why no page 5 among the arguments of \dosetuparrangement ? * What if one wants to fold the resulting brochure ? Limited with rule?

Hi all, I've been trying to create a horizontal rule of limited width, using MkIV. My best approach so far is using a \framed with only a bottom frame: \framed[frame=off,bottomframe=on,width=.5\textwidth]{} However, this is not quite elegant. Context provides two commands for drawing lines, \hairline and \thinrule (which seem to do the same from looking at their definition in pack-rul.mkiv, though \hairline does not seem to respond to \setupthinrules for some reason I cannot discern...). However, \setupthinrules accepts a lot of options (including height and depth, which get passed to \hrule, but there is no width option (nor does there seem any way to get \thinrule to pass a width to \hrule). Another attempt to put a frameless \framed around the \hairline (which gets as wide as the containing box) failed as well. The line kept getting vertical, even when I sprinkeled some \dontleavehmod or \pars around... Any suggestions on how to do this? Gr. Matthijs

\typebuffer with typing style

Hi, I'm trying to use a buffer together with a custom typing style using the latest beta with MkIV, but so far I've only managed to do this using \startFOO and \stopFOO inside the buffer: \definetyping[FOO][option=FOO] \startbuffer[bar] \startFOO baz \stopFOO \stopbuffer \getbuffer[bar] Since the \getbuffer is really inside some self-defined command, I'd like to put the startFOO / stopFOO in there as well. However, I can't seem to find a way to do this, since \startFOO \getbuffer[bar] \stopFOO gives me compile errors. It seems the canonical way to define typing and buffers is using \typebuffer, but that only seems to work with the default typing style. I'd like to do the following: \definetyping[FOO][option=FOO] \startbuffer[bar] baz \stopbuffer \typebuffer[FOO][bar] From looking at buff-ini.mkiv it seems typebuffer has some code to handle a second argument, but it seems to always throw it away (as far as I can understand this Tex stuff... :-). Is there some way to achieve this? Would it be good to make \typebuffer support this if there isn't? Gr. Matthijs

Bullet size inconsistent with font size in item group

Through the help of this mailing list I was able to resize the font for different levels of an item group using the inner command; however, this has had some unexpected effects on the size of my bullets. The first bullet in a list is sized based on the preceding font size, while all of the other bullets are sized based on the specified font size for that item group. That probably wasn't clear, but I'm hoping this example will explain what I mean. Verbatim / prettyprinting in mkIV

Hi all, I've been struggling with verbatim printing in MkIV for a while now and found some confusing things. I did finally get things working, but after quite some effort. I'd like to hear if my conclusions are correct, perhaps I can put them on the wiki then. I was trying to set up some custom pretty printing scripts, using lua (since I'd rather not learn complete tex scripting :-p). Looking at the files in /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base and the wiki (Verbatim_text talks about verb-foo.tex files), I created a file called verb-foo.lua. I put this beside my document at first, and then in /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base when it did not work, but neither worked. I tried setting things up as follows: \installprettytype [FOO] [FOO] \definetyping[FOO][option=FOO] \startFOO blub \stopFOO Trying to trace the code, I worked out things should work as follows: \installprettytype sets the "evalue" \??ty\??tyFOO to point at FOO \definetyping call \setupprettiesintypeFOO, which finds looks up the above evalue, finds FOO and then turns that into verb-foo and calls \ctxloadluafile{verb-foo}{}. This sets up the buffers.visualizers.foo value in lua. When actually starting a typing environment, dodotypeA or dodotypeD call buffers.hooks.flush_line, which in turn calls buffers.visualizers.foo.flush_line. The above didn't happen for me, so I tried manually loading the lua file using \ctxloadluafile{verb-foo}{}. After this, things started working for some reason. When looking closer and installing some \writestatus lines in core-ver.mkiv, I found that \setupprettiesintype was never actually called! Closer inspection showed that the entire core-ver.mkiv is never loaded when running "context --make". However, there is a second file, buff-ver.mkiv which closely resembles core-ver.mkiv and which is loaded. An important difference, however, is that buff-ver loads pret-foo instead of verb-foo (or rather, uses the value of \f!prettyprefix, which is set to "pret-" in mult-sys.tex). Renaming my lua file to pret-foo.lua made context find it exactly as it should, also when putting the file next to the main document. So, my main question was, are the verb-*.lua and core-ver.text files still used in any way? I just checked the minimals tree, and found out they have been removed already (but I didn't have -d in my rsync commandline to actually remove them). Looking at the previous version I was running (2009.05.20 beta) it seems that this change was actually pretty recent, so I mostly created this confusing situation by upgrading today (because my verbatim file was not properly loaded). I'm not so sure why it was not working before then, but at least it is working now. Heh, this is what you get when you write an email while you are still trying things out. All this buildup to get to a question, when the question is not even relevant. As for another relevant question: Is my analysis of how things are supposed to work correct? Then I might put something like it on the wiki. Also, it seems that \ctxloadluafile does not give an error when the file was not found. If it would have, things would probably have been a lot easier. Hello, I'm glad to report that I made a simple application (sorry, only forWindows at the moment) that coverts text from Ms Word (or other editors) or HTML pages (web sites) into TeX. DOWNLOAD LINK (280 KB): http://ul.to/hmpy60 The app recognizes at the moment only following formats/tags: Bold (<b>), Italic (<i>), Header 1 (<h1>), Header 2 (<h2>), Header 3 (<h3>). It coverts NOBREAK_SPACE (A0) into ~, &nbsp into \enskip, " into ", & into \&, and < > into < >. It is UTF-8 ready. USAGE: copy desired text fragment from Word or web page into clipboard, and click big "Get..." button and see the result in the bottom field. Click "Copy Result" to get TeX-formatted text back into the clipboard, and paste it into your editor. KNOW ISSUES: Some crap from Word formatting like  tags happens to leak, but it is easier at the moment to delete it manually. And sorry... awful interface. It is very-very first alpha, I want to show it just as proof-of-concept and to get some feedback. Actually, I did it for myself to simplyfy conversion from Word into TeX. Hi all, Hans, here is a bug that remains with the new structure code after Hans fixed many things two weeks ago. I want a counter that is reset at every odd chapter. Crop marks and \setuplayout[nx,ny]

Hi, the following code, which I ran with context --mode=print shows crop marks in the middle if the sheet, overlapping the pages. It is legitimate to specify dy=0pt in order to minimize paper cuts. It seems to me like, in the case when dy=0pt, the code dealing with crop marks should try not to overlap the pages, or suppress the marks between two columns of pages. What do you think ? Is there currently a solution to this ? 3D PDF support (AKA asymptote support)

Dear Hans, Mojca and All, a draft for an analog of LaTeX movie15 package for including Adobe Reader compatible 3d models into PDF files is at http://www.iaas.msu.ru/tmp/movie15context.tgz . Almost no docs/comments inside, but questions are of course welcome. You'd better take a brief look at part 5.2 of movie15 docs http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/movie15/doc/movie15.pdf and part 13.6 of ISO/Adobe PDF spec http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/PDF32000_2008.pdf to understand what are the settings. Since I lack understanding of ConTeXt/luatex combo and have to pass data for dictionaries containing other dictionaries to 3D model embedder I had to abuse two existing parameters, "control" and "display" and rely on sane lua code being put there. And even the limited parameter correctness checks do not report problems, they just silently fail to execute. One more option to deal with 3D models is not to embed them as annotations in the main PDF file, but to make a PDF with only 3D model in it and attach it to the main PDF, linking to a clickable 2D image (like attachfile2 LaTeX package). Donno if that functionality is in working condition now and how to use it. Sincerely, Michail

Hi, I know I can input an emdash with: \emdash Is there an alternative when I want an horizontal bar? See this, where I found they can be different: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark,_non-English_usage#Quotation_da… They have different unicode numbers, U+2014 and U+2015. (Is there something similar to \showcharacters? I read in tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/enco-ini.mkiv it's in a todo list, but I thought it's worth asking.) Thanks, Maurício

Font sizes in item group

I am trying to find out it there is a way to set the font size for each level of an item group so that as you go down the item group, the font decreases a small amount. I assume there must be a way, but I haven't found anything looking around the manuals. simple-slides: Last slide not formatted

I am having a problem with the last slide of my presentation using the simple-slide module. No matter what style I use, the last slide doesn't follow the style chosen and doesn't contain the specified title. In the example below, the title slide and slides 1 - 3 are correctly formatted, but slide 4 only displays the text "This is the forth slide" in black text on a white background. Hello, It seems, that one cannot use accented characters in file-names. Example: "context état.tex" fails with: This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.40.1-2009051420 (Web2C 7.5.7) \write18 enabled. ! Sorry for reposting this message sent this morning: I thought it didn't go through… Hi Hans, I noticed that in math mode the spacement of some symbols are incorrect while using mkiv (they are correct in mkii). Here is an example %%%%% begin example \starttext Set $a := bc^{-1}$. \stoptext %%%%% end example In this example, there should be a space before and after ":=" as one may see it readily in mkii (and indeed in plain TeX…). Reference to equation fails

There seems to be a problem in the referencing to equations in the version of MKIV I'm using: ConTeXt ver: 2009.06.03 11:48 MKIV fmt: 2009.6.3 int: english/english In the following code, the reference to the equation fails, resulting in '??'. Captials in section head

I need all section heads to be in full-size capitals, so I tried: \setuphead[section][textcommand=\uppercase] \starttext \section{New section} \input knuth \stoptext But I still get lowercase.
