Inter-document Cross References

I am trying to create cross references that span two documents, but am having trouble figuring out exactly how to generate PDFs where the cross references from one document to the other work. I'm following the project/product/component structure and my two documents are each a product in the same project. I normally run texexec from within the product directory, when I try running it from the project directory there is no output. Is it possible to have documents reference each other in this way? Why piece am I missing? I've looked through the documentation, wiki, google, this list, etc and I'm either searching for the wrong thing or there is nothing written about it. Thanks, Adam

t-vim: unwanted space after vimtyping

Hello, I've tried to put a \relax at the end of the input file (file generated by vim) and also done some experiments with \removeunwantedspaces but I could not get rid of the space (vertical or horizontal) after the vim-typing. First page of chapter layout

The assistance for my last question came quickly and was so helpful that I will go back to the well. How does one go about changing the layout for the first pages of a chapter? By default, I get the chapter number and title in large print at the top of the page but want to make it something more interesting. My experiments with \setuphead haven't been fruitful. Hi I've put an alpha release on the website - no beta as mkiv needs the trunk version of luatex - a close to complete split in mkii/mkiv - cleaned up mkiv code - cleaned up mkiv backend (some pending issues) - some speedups in mkiv - a few fixes in mkii - updated mkiv typescripts (more to come) - fixes in mkiv structure this version is not replicated on the context garden as we run older luatex binaries there (0.45 release by the end of this month) you can unzip this file on your locla tree but best first rename the tex/context/base directory and make a fresh one as otherwise you end up with a weird mixture (due to the definitive split in .mkii/.mkiv there are not that many shared .tex files any more) on the upcoming tex live there will be an updated mkii (either this one or the current beta which is basically a current for mkii) and an old mkiv (maybe the beta) or a new one but that one will not run then with the luatex on texlive as it is too old; this is no big deal as you can either use the minimals or use the new updater in the upcoming tex live to fetch newer binaries (norbert and mojca showed that trickery at bachotek 2009) next on the mkiv agenda is an upgrade/rework of everything related to page building but it might as well be postponed till we have a bit more access (which will happen sometime after eurotex); the first priority is to get the new structure related code right but as idris is already publising books made by mkiv it's not that bad as it sounds. I am attempting for the first time to import a figure into a ConTeXt document and am getting "figure 0481c can not be found." I am using TexLive on a Windows Vista system. I thought I was following the manual but apparently am doing something wrong. Hi, I've uploaded a current release (so for a moment no beta and alpha). Last years current was dedicated to Mojca but as she's too busy to use the latest greatest shw probably won't even notice that there is a current apart from the fact that her garden will have problems. So, this years current (and there probably will be a few in succesion) is dedicated to Wolfgang who by now knows the source code better than I do. Also, his prompt and detailed answering of questions on the list saved me quite some mails gave me more time to work on MkIV. The MkIV code needs a luatex 0.42 which is released today (a next step towards 0.50 which will be released at eurotex) so you need to fetch a binary from the gforce repository, or hope that new binaries will blossom on the garden. Going current also gives Patrick the opportunity to see if the new git repository structure and synchronization works ok. Two newbie questions about Texfont

Now that I finally have Context running I'm trying to install a number of type1 fonts. I've read the Texfont manual, but I couldn't find answers to these questions: 1. Can Texfont recursively process a font tree? I have a directory font tree like this: c:\fonts\type1\font-family1 c:\fonts\type1\font-family2 c:\fonts\type1\font-family3 each font-family subdirectory has a number of .afm files. If I set --sourcepath to c:\fonts\type1 can Texfont recurse all the subdirectories of the font families and locate and process the .afm files? 2. Can Texfont handle .afm files with extensions in uppercase? Most of my type1 font files are in uppercase like: XYZ_____.AFM I can only get Texfont to process these files if I first rename them to lowercase, like XYZ_____.AFM Thanks, Harrie.

Hello, out of curiosity I have tried the latest current. Is the command \setupheadnumber[section][6] now invalid on purpose or is there a simple way to fix it? Math symbols issue with context minimals distribution and

I am using context minimals, with the simpleslides module to make a presentation. I noticed that when typesetting math formulas, I get missing characters. I finally tracked it down to an issue (stupidity from me?) with the "context" executable. I made a new file, with some example math markup, posted below ---------- \starttext And this is some maths with PostScript fonts. \startformula {a \over b} = {c \over d} \iff ad - bc = 0, \qquad \int_0^{2\pi}\!\!\! \sin^2(x)dx =\pi, \qquad {\rm e}^{{\rm i}\pi} + 1 = 0, \qquad \sum_{k=1}^{\infty}{1 \over k^2} = {\pi^2 \over 6}. \stopformula Some ligatures: ffi, ffl. \stoptext ----------- When running "context test_math.tex", in the output file I don't see the "\iff" symbol. Hyphenation list and umlauts

Hi, I stumbled upon a problem with my hyphenation list: In MKIV, all the words in the list that contain umlauts are completely ignored. MKII is fine. Example: \de \hyphenation{ma-nö-v-rie-ren} \starttext \hyphenatedword{manövrieren} \stoptext Is there any workaround for this? (\odiaeresis doesn't work either) Or do I have an encoding problem? ConTeXt Minimals parsing of .tui broken with ruby 1.9.1 in Windows

Hello all, I want to report a problem that is either in ConTeXt, or in ruby 1.9.1 (last version of ruby). More probably, the problem has to do with ruby handling non-ASCII characters. I have no means of trying Linux, Solaris, etc... Anyone using ConTeXt with ruby 1.9.1 will face it probably (at least in Windows :-) The problem happens with all files, even with the simple "Hello": \starttext Hello World \stoptext After installing ConTeXt Minimals (the devel version) yesterday, I ran the above example with ruby 1.9.1-p129 in Windows (both Win 2000 and XP show the problem). I have the xml sources for the Gimp manual. I can't seem to get them to translate to a pdf. The top xml file just contains a series of calls to subordinate files. When I run this through Context I get just the text of the first file in no particular format and none of the subfiles. I have tried texexec --environment=gimp gimp.xml and texexec --environment=xml gimp.xml The Gimp advice is to use dblatex, but that seems to think it is on a Windows system and generates errors containing code like c:\foo Now I can hand convert each and every xml statement in each and every subfile to a TeX equivalent but there should be a shorter way. There are more than 600 subfiles. Or I can write a program to do that to either the xml source or the html derivative. But I hope Context will enable me to do it with less labor. TeXLive newbie can't run Context

I'm the newest of newbies and have installed of TexLive on a PC running Vista. The post-installation tests described in Section 3.5 of the TeXLive Guide run just fine (Tex, LaTex, pdfLaTex). No tests were included for Context, so I failed around trying to run Texexec amd Texmfstart to no good end. How can I determine if Context was installed properly and how do I run Context? How would I implement this? First time user trying to get Context to work

This is my first post to the list. I'm a first time user and I'm very eager to give Context a try. However, so far I've been unable to get Context to work properly. Maybe someone can help. I'm using a standard Windows PC running XP SP2. I'm using the minimals version. There are no other Tex related packages on my system. Problem 1 (solved): Ruby error: no such file to load ubygems Solution: this error is caused by the environment variable RUBYOPT. When it is set, it is usually set to -rubygems. Unsetting this variable solves the problem. Suggestion: when running first-setup.bat this error is produced on the very first line. However, since there is a lot of text scrolling down the screen this error is easily overlooked. It may be a good idea to unset the RUBYOPT variable in this .bat file. It may also be a good idea to unset (and probably reset) this variable in the texexec.bat file before texlua is called. Problem 2 (not-solved) I'm getting the infamous error: I can't find the format file `cont-en.fmt'! I searched this list and tried texexec --make --all This doesn't solve the problem. The problem is located in this part of the output: TexExec | using tex engine pdftex TexExec | using tex format path ./pdftex TexExec | unable to make format due to lack of permissions TexExec | using mp engine mpost TexExec | using mps format path . TexExec | generating mps format metafun I then did some debugging on the tex.rb file and found the error is generated in the following piece of code starting at line 646: if texformats && texengine then report("using tex engine #{texengine}") texformatpath = if getvariable('local') then '.' else Kpse.formatpath(texengine,true) end # can be empty, to do report("using tex format path #{texformatpath}") Dir.chdir(texformatpath) rescue false if FileTest.writable?(texformatpath) then The last if fails and generates the error on line 679. I then checked for file permissions in the c:\context directory tree and found no problems there. My guess: the ./pdftex format path either doesn't exist or can't be found by tex.rb and this generates the error. The ruby scripts of Context are too large to do a full debug. colo-hex

Hi, there is a small bug in colo-hex, which leads to slightly wrong colors (at max. -0.390625%). In line 41 of both mark related files there is \newdimen\hexcolorfraction \hexcolorfraction=\dimexpr(1pt/256) . This should be 255 (#fractions) instead of 256 (#values); I made the same error a quite while ago. If I patch the files, I get the correct color in case of mark ii, but mark iv still gives the wrong one (remade the formats). Mh, strange. Here the output of my beloved 'tabbyCalc' (result of operation is always in next line, which is then used for next operation): 1/255 0,0039215686*255 0,999999993 1/256 0,00390625*255 0,99609375-1*100 -0,390625 I attached a small test file, which hopefully 'shows' (depends on your monitor) the difference. The border line goes from the lower left to the upper right corner; you have to look 'closely'. :D I case of pdftex you can also peek into the eps file to see the color values (before and after patching). No such help for mkiv. I have no clue why mkiv still gives the wrong color... Font Path Problem.

I am running Debian amd64 (a mixed version system) and recently installed context. I am trying to get mkiv working, and so far it mostly is. The one problem I've run into is that I can't get it to recognize the extra truetype fonts I have in /usr/local/share/fonts. It only seems to see the ones that came with the installation. I've followed the various installation and setup documents as best I could but so far haven't had any luck. Page numbering in roman style is not working for me. What could the problem be? I get the numbers in the footer, but it prints in Arabic numbers (1,2,3 ...). Duotones with spot colors

Hello list, I am preparing for a next project which will be printed in two colours. Obviously, perfect opportunity to use duotones. However I got my duotone illustrations in CMYK tiffs with images in yellow and black channels. Thanks to the help I've been getting, I've almost got my layout working. The only remaining problem seems to be that the footer automatically inserts some whitespace above my framed text. The intent is for it to be flush to the top of the footer. Fraktur symbol in subscript

Hello All, While the \fraktur{C} command works for me in the Math mode as part of a regular expression, it does not work in the subscript. The command I am trying is $ x \sim_{\fraktur{C}} y $. I get a blank in place of the fraktur C. However, if I try just $ x \fraktur{C} y $, it works. Does anyone have a fix? I am using This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.40.5-2009061123 (Web2C 2009) ConTeXt ver: 2009.06.14 21:01 MKIV fmt: 2009.6.25 int: english/english Thank you very much.

Hello Willi, Thanks for your answer. Your suggestion works ... if I would be free to choose the framed text to be 0.5 textwidth. However, the framed text is source code and I do need the entire textwidth because otherwise I'm going to get line wraps and that'll make things look ugly. I expected placefigure[right] to be clever enough to see that there is no room beside the framed text, and either place the figure above it or beneath it. My current workaround is to put the placefigure[right] macro earlier in the flow of text if possible, or use placefigure[force]. Table of Contents with unnumbered Chapters etc

Hi all, I am struggling, vainly so far, with "list" and "combinedlist", and I hope someone can help me. What I want to do is the following: I am making a bilingual version om some old German text, adding an English translation. As in the original German version, I want to use unnumbered chapters, sections etc. but I still do want a table of contents. I had the impression "unnumbered" can be achieved by using "title", "subject", etc instead of "chapter", "section", etc and still get a table of contents by means of a combined list. But whatever I tried, no list is ever placed anywhere and even \completecombinedlist[contents][level=subject] is seen as an undefined control sequence. I have used ConTeXt from TeXlive-2008 via TeXShop, and Minimals (ConTeXt ver: 2009.06.14 21:01 MKIV) via Terminal, but the result is the same. No doubt I do some things totally wrong but I can't help having a sneaking suspicion that something is wrong with "list"s. That is, I would read and save their values consecutively in the same Lua function so that they would refer to the ConTeXt source line currently being processed by the ConTeXt engine. Now you say that ConTeXt may not be reading from a file at that level. That I can accept (being a non-expert), but status.linenumber always returns the correct line number for the ConTeXt file being processed (even if the file is being \input from another file). It seems to me that if the line number within the source file is accurate, then the file's name should be accurate, too. Thank you, Tad

context installation on Windows XP

I am having touble installling CONTEX (and metafun) on Windows XP. I downloaded and installed Texlive. I am able to run Latex and some other programs, but I tried various ways, unsuccesfully, to run context. For example I tried running texmfstart texexec.rb hello.tex and some other combinations, and nothing happened. I went to the PRAGMA-ADE website and downoaded cont-tmf into the texmf-local directory and unzipped it. Then I tried texexec -make -all and a few other combinatins and nothing happened. I have Perl v5.10 installed, and I use editor EMACS with AUCTEX assistance would be much appreciated, Philip Brown

Installation of modules ======================= Basics –––––– The installation of extra files in TeX (called modules in ConTeXt) can be hard for people how are new in TeX or aren't interested in TeX programming themselve. According to the TDS (TeX directory structure) and the ConTeXt developers user written files reside under the path $TEXMF/tex/context/third/<modulename>/<files> in the private TeX directory ($TEXMF), private directories can have the names • texmf-local • texmf-extra • texmf-project but there existence depend on the TeX distribution and texmf-local is the most common one. Installation by hand –––––––––––––––––––– When you want to install a new module which is available as file only create the subdirectories in the way described above and place the file there, for modules which are available as zip files with precreated subdorectories you can unzip the archive in the top-level directory (e.g. texmf-local/) and all files are on the correct place. After the files are placed at the right place you have to update TeX's database to let it know where it can find the files, this is done for MkII with mktexlsr (command name depends on the TeX distribution) and for MkIV with context --generate ConTeXt minimals –––––––––––––––– Users of the ConTeXt minimals dont't have to download the module files and unzip them in the local directory because they can use the 'first-setup' for this. Hi, I'm installing minimals on my new macbook, and luckily, my instructions on wiki still works :) I've been able to build the font tree and I've seen with great pleasure that there's a simplefonts module. bold math

Hello Hans, I wanted to use \definetypeface [boldmath] [mm] [boldmath] [latin-modern] [default] \starttext $\boldsymbol θ$ \stoptext but it seems to fail in mkii and has no influence in mkiv. (The workaround in mkii is to use \theta instead of θ, in mkiv it makes no difference.) 1. Is there any simple patch that could make θ work in mkii? (I'm working with mkii at the moment) 2. I have no idea what to do in mkiv case. Some of symbols (including bold greek) exist is the same font, some don't and might require another ("bolder") font. Maybe fixing the behaviour of \boldsymbol and a few mappings for greek could be enogh to start with. I have tried to enter "MATHEMATICAL BOLD ITALIC SMALL THETA" directly with LM, but it didn't work (probably there are some mappings still missing, but it's a bit uncomfortable to type proper mathematical symbols anyway as editor is somehow lacking the characters and keyboard would have to be reconfigured heavily). Unwanted empty last page in doublesided document

I am using Context mkII and have the following challenge: I am using a doblesided layout and want to have an even total number of pages. The last chapter should have an empty trailing page (if necessary) to add up to the right number. The problem is that I always get an ODD number of pages, and there are _two_ empty last pages at the end of the document. I have tried \installpagebreakhandler with no effect. The attached sample shows the problem - two empty pages at end. I would have expected the document to stop at page 10, but there is an empty page 11 as well. Does anyone have a clue here? Hallo Wolfgang! ;-) Since my old letter and CV environment doesn't work anymore in MkIV, I'm trying to reproduce it with t-letter. At the moment I struggle with the reference keys: \setupletterstyle[reference][ alternative=d, list={name,street,city,,phone,skype,email,,date}, ] \setupletter[name,street,phone,date,skype,email][ separator={: }, titlestyle={\ss\tfxx}, ] The keys street, city and skype aren't defined in your module. I found where the other keys are defined (and I guess I could mine in or use a similar approach in my environment), but I'm clueless, where the translation comes from - I grepped eg. after "Telefon" without results, and I think I looked into every file of your module. I guess it would be interesting how to define your own keys, maybe some IM adresses etc., also for other users. Would it be possible to use unknown keys just unchanged? I.e. if I say \setupletter[ Skype={fiee.visuelle} ] to get just "Skype: fiee.visuelle"? More questions will follow... I'll try to get my logo at the right place by myself before... Page Break Events

Hello, since that question has probably gone by unnoticed in my other posting, I'll ask more directly here: How can I react on page breaks (in MkII)? More specifcally: I need to reset a variable whenever a pagebreak occurs (atleast when automatic page breaks occur ... but it would be nice, if it also works for manually broken pages). The only thing that I was able to find was \insertpagebreakhandler ... but it seems as if this can only be triggered manually with \page. Thanks in advance! Andreas.

How to Determine the Current File Name and Line Number in the ConTeXt Source?

Is there a convenient way within a Lua block to determine the current file name and line number of the source file being processed by ConTeXt? But that seems a bit heavy handed if the file name and line number information are available more directly. And since that information is needed for error reporting, I'm thinking there's a good chance it is accessible. (Just in case you're interested, the purpose of this is to be able to assemble code segments during the ConTeXt processing into external files with #line directives ala the C preprocessor. That way if the subsequent compilation of the external file results in an error, the error message can refer back to the line of code in the ConTeXt source file. This is part of the literate programming module that Kevin Robbins has been describing in another thread.) Thanks, Tad

Turning slides in unattended presentation

Hello, Is it possible to make slides (i.e., PDF pages) to turn automatically, say, every 10 seconds (and start again, in loop)? I suppose that Reader is in full-screen mode (Ctrl+L). I already have nice transitions between slides, making the presentation unattended is the main thing I lank now. Vyatcheslav

Conditional commands

Hi, I'm currently trying to make a command that outputs different text depending on the situation it has been called, but I'm absolutely stuck there (I'm not very familiar with TeX, so it's probably obvious to most of you :-/). It currently looks like this: \doassign[mycite][last=] \def\mycite[#1]{% \footnote{% \doifelse{\mycitelast}{#1}{Ebenda}{\cite[alternative=data][#1]}% } \doassign[mycite][last=#1] } The idea is as follow: if I cite the same citation two or more times in a row (e.g. Some text\mycite[chan_genetic_2005] ... more text\mycite[chan_genetic_2005]) it should only output the whole quotation the first time, and "Ebenda" all the other times. But as it seems, the \doifelse always evaluates to false and therefore outputs the whole citation every time. Does someone see what I might be doing wrong? Or is there even a better way to do this? Hi Hans and others, I've been searching the mailing list and source code for one or more examples of passing unexpanded text appearing between a \startfoo ... \stopfoo block into Lua, but without luck. Is there such an example you could point me to? A colleague and I are experimenting with strategies to implement a literate programming module for ConTeXt, and we'd like to have something like \startcodeblock[language=c,file=foo.c, etc.][blockname] // This is the main routine... int main() { return 0; } \stopcodeblock We would appreciate any thoughts you have about how to implement such a module. Hello, I want to have captions for figures, listings and other stuff inside the document margin. Can't change typeface without type size

This seems to be a small bug. This works well: %%%% \usetypescript[pagella] \usetypescript[chorus] \setupbodyfont[pagella,22pt] \starttext Text on body font. { \switchtobodyfont[chorus,21pt] Text on special typeface. } \stoptext %%%% However, if I either remove '21pt' from \switchtobodyfont or just change it to '22pt' (i.e., no change from body font size) I don't get text for the other font. (This is not specific to pagella and chorus, I've checked this same problem with all other combinations I tried. I'm using latest version in minimals, i.e., did 'sh first-setup.hs' just half an hour ago.) Best, Maurício

spanish tilde-n lost

Hi all, I finally got around the intallation of context minimals. Thank you for those who helped. I ran my old tex files (in spanish) and found that \~n is not working now. It should create an n with a tilde on top, but what happens is that there is no letter printed at all. What is the fix for this? Any switch? (I know I could use \char but I am looking for a more elegant solution) thank you Ciro

The 'n=' option to \setupnote doesn't have any effect, more ever 'n=0' will give an "Arithmetic overflow" error. add layer to page

Hi all, I have a vague memory that there was a message (by Wolfgang Schuster?) about this a couple of months ago, but I'm unable to find anything in the archives. What I want: add a layer on top of the current page. This page is created with the simpleslides-module, so it already contains several layers. I want something on top of all that, and I seem to remember that there was some option to say "typeset the current layers + this additional one." Can somebody help my memory? All best Thomas

Hello I used \placefigure just for centering the figure. And even if I put \startcombination directly, won't it reserve blank space for empty subcaptions? uppercase Greek in math: roman or italic?

Hello, I'm probably among the guilty ones ... in MKII and in LaTeX all the lowercase greek letters come out in italic, but all uppercase letters come out in roman shape. In MKIV now they both come out in italic. This has probably been done almost on purpose (or better: I knew about it, but didn't dare to care enough), but it would be nice to solve the issue somehow. It might make sense to allow or enable uppercase italic Greek letters in special cases, but it would be nice to have compatible behaviour. TeX has been there for a while and it has always behaved in some specific way (roman uppercase Greek in this particular case). It's funny if ConTeXt MKIV chooses another way with no particular reason. This question is not related to implementation so much (changing the default behaviour is easy; only enabling both variants would require some more configuration ...), I would only like to hear opinions. On creating my own fonts

I've been doing some searching on how to create my own fonts. If possible, I would like to be able to write my own program to at least draw glyphs, even if I have to resort to other tools to describe hinting, kerning and ligatures. My current knowledge is this. I read that OpenType fonts are actually Type 1 fonts embedded in an archive. So I used this 't1disasm' tool I found after wikipedia article on postscript fonts and used it to decode one of ConTeXt minimal distribution font file into a nice to read text file that looks like the transcript below, and it seems to be something I could easily understand if I find a reference. I would like to ask you if I'm in the proper direction. There are some issues I can't understand, like how can I make OpenType fonts out of Type 1 fonts when the later are supposed to only contain 256 characters (aren't they?). Or how to understand this text file format so I can write my own glyphs. Do you think I'm in the right direction. Do you think there's an easier or better way if I want to create fonts without using existing graphical tools? Delayed expansion of macro?

The pagenumber is the same on each page for a file 2. The file name with the $ in it crashes the typefile argument (file not found), where \typefile itself handles the name OK. How do I solve these? In LaTeX I would probably use \protect on \pagenumber. G

Hello Thomas, Thanks for reply. My idea about the buttons came from student diploma presentations. One student does the presentation, while his friend turns the slides. Sometimes it's necessary to go back, so it will be handy to have buttons... Document Titles

I followed the wiki http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Document_Titles but the last part "Adding markings to headers and footers" does not work. I suspect "In ConTeXt: A more advanced solution" was put in later and the instructions in Adding Markings does not work in that solution. So, how do I add the markings in the "advanced solution" in the wiki instructions? G PS. This is what I would really like to have in ConTeXt. A gooed set of modules like a t-title, t-article, etc. Why after all these years has this not been added? It would make ConTeXt so much more usable for conceptual writers like myself.
