Hello, I´m tring to learn Context... this is probably a Tex question but anyway: I want to make a subscript such that the smaller number (or something) is written wright under the bigger number (and not, as usual, at the left of the number). This seams an obvious task but i can´t do it. Thank you very much, Jorge

Problem with \digits

loooong stanzas (longer than a page)

Hello list, Maybe I'm just too tired but I can't find a way to force long stanzas between \startlines and \stoplines to break and turn up on next page. Instead the stanza is simply truncated. Does ConTEXt manual also exist in a printer-friendly layout ?

Hi, I'm new to ConTEXt. I downloaded the misc documents and start reading the manual. After having read about 50 pages, I find all this very interesting, but is there a more printer-friendly version of the manual ? The screen-oriented layout of the documents is nice to show what ConTEXt can do, but my eyes soon get tired when reading long documents on a screen. I also don't need the navigation links when printing the manual. Thanks. Julien

framing in TABLEs

installing the letter module

Dear all This might be a trivial question for an expert user, but for an untrained end user this is not trivial, as I cannot find any documentation on wiki or anywere else. I would like to install the latest version of the letter module. How do I do this? I want to install it in a personal directory (say $(HOME)/usr/context/local-modules) and make sure that texexec will search this structure first before he tries to search the standard locations thanks stephen

Upcoming EuroTeX 2009

Dear TeX user, The upcoming EuroTeX 2009 takes place from August 31 till September 4 in Den Haag in The Netherlands. In parallel we will run the third ConTeXt conference. We already have some 25 talks and tutorials submitted but we need a few more as we run a parallel program. If you are willing to present a paper or tutorial, please let us know. The theme of the conference is "Educational Uses of TeX" but of course other TeX and MetaPost related topics will be covered as well. Depending on the amount of contributions we will program them in blocks that cover general topics but we will also cluster talks and turorials specific to macro packages in an additional program. Furthermore, after the frontmatter the page numbers should start again with 1 (at least that is what I think) but they just continue (i.c. with 3). The previous TeX-file, in ntg-context Digest, Vol 63, Issue 6, message 6, showed almost the reverse, i.e. Roman numbers on the pages but not in the TOC but the body matter starting correctly on page 1. So if the present setup works correctly for Derek, why would it be it different on my system and what can I do about it? Sorry for intruding but this topic is important for me. Slovenian alphabetic itemize broken in MKIV

Helvetica Neue and Snow Leopard

Hi, I've run into a problem using Helvetica Neue on a Mac under Snow Leopard. The font is provided by Apple and was a dfont package on 10.5, now it is a ttc. I am getting garbled and funny text using it. An example is -- \usetypescriptfile[type-mac] \usetypescript[helvetica-neue] \setupbodyfont[helvetica-neue,sans,10pt] \starttext {\bf Hello World, 1234567890\par} {Hello World, 1234567890\par} \stoptext I am attaching pdfs that show the correct (from Leopard) and incorrect output. Both systems are running ConTeXt 2009.08.19 (actually I just updated to 2009.08.30 with no help, this is using minimals) and LuaTeX beta-0.43.0-2009081811. The bold font gets the letters correct but it looks terrible; normal sans text is completely garbled. I have reloaded my font database but it didn't help. Thanks, Brian

Problems with inner products

Hi everybody, I am trying to define a command for inner products. I would like to type $\innerprod{x, y}$ and obtain in the output <x, y>. Now, I defined \define[2]\innerprod {\langle #1, #2 \rangle} but then, when I used the command, I got some weird behavior: the next character after "y" would "jump in" the inner product. For example, when writing $\innerprod{x, y} + z$ I was hoping to obtain as an output <x, y> + z But I got as an output <x, y +> z I am using the ConTeXt that came with MacTeX 2008 (I downloaded it a few days ago). natural tables: when I say nc=2, I really mean it

Hi folks, When I compile this table: \starttext \setupTABLE[c][1][width=12pt,rightframe=off] \setupTABLE[c][2][width=108pt,leftframe=off] \setupTABLE[c][each][width=60pt] \bTABLE \bTR \bTD x \eTD \bTD y \eTD \bTD z \eTD \eTR \bTR \bTD[nc=2] thisisaverylongwordishthing \eTD \bTD word \eTD \eTR \eTABLE \endtext I get the 2 rows I expect: the first with 1 narrow column, 1 wide column, and 1 medium column; the second with 1 even wider column and 1 medium column. When I do the same thing, but with the first row omitted: \starttext \setupTABLE[c][1][width=12pt] \setupTABLE[c][2][width=108pt] \setupTABLE[c][each][width=60pt] \bTABLE \bTR \bTD[nc=2] thisisaverylongwordishthing \eTD \bTD word \eTD \eTR \eTABLE \endtext it's as if the nc=2 is ignored -- it tries to squeeze "thisisaverylongwordishthing" into 1 12pt column instead of a combined 120pt column. How can I convince it to do what I mean with nc=2 despite having only one row with only 2 cells? thanks. (Long time subscriber, first time poster, love the macro package.)

long quotation without quotation marks

Hi all, In a text with some fairly long quotations I want to have these quotations without their quotation marks, not indented and set in small type. Thanks to the ConTeXt wiki I found I could fulfill two of the three requirements by using \setupdelimitedtext[blockquote][style={\setupbodyfont[9pt]}, and \startblockquote (text of the quotation) \blank \stopblockquote, but I still get the unwanted indenting. In the main text I want indenting of the first lines of most new paragraphs, so I have \setupindenting[20pt,yes] in the preamble, but I do not want it in the quotations. Placing \noindent at the beginning of the quotation does not do anything. As a hack I commented out \setupindenting[20pt,yes] and started every paragraph I want to indent with ~~~~~. That works. But somehow I feel there must be a more elegant solution, only I can’t find it. Is there somebody who could help me out? Thanks in advance. Robert Blackstone

publications and custom author separator

Hi I am trying to replace ('in' instead of 'and') a separator between the last two authors for every article, but I am facing a semi success. My approach was to set the variable finalnamesep in \setuppublicationlist. At the moment it is working only when there are three or more authors per entry. This example with 5 authors is ok, there is 'in' between last two authors. Rong-En Fan, Kai-Wei Chang, Cho-Jui Hsieh, Xiang-Rui Wang in Chih-Jen Lin, LIBLINEAR: A library for large linear classiﬁcation v Journal of Machine Learning Research, 2008. MkIV issue with normal italics text in math mode

Hi, I've run across what I believe to be a bug in MkIV -- I am unable to access non-math italics from within math mode. A simple example is -- \starttext \math{\text{\it Hello, World}} \stoptext This works in MkII. Or perhaps there some other way I'm supposed to code this? Thanks, Brian

Hi all, LuaTex doesn't seem to like the \definesynonyms command. Using \startalign outside of math mode?

Hi, I'm using a custom pretty printer to apply some formatting to a buffer. However, I'm not using a monospaced font, but some sans serif font to display the result. In the original text, I have some lines that are nicely aligned using leading spaces. For example: foo = bar | baz Obviously, when using a non monospaced font for this, the alignment is lost. When in math mode, I can use \startalign to force alignment, like: \startalign foo \NC= bar \NC| baz \stopalgin However, I haven't manage to switch to math mode inside pretty printed text. Also, even if I would, I would get my text rendered in math mode, which probably won't work. So, I'm wondering if there is anything like \startalign to use outside of math mode? I've been looking at the implementation of \startalign, but couldn't find it... Some way to insert spacing until some fixed point (e.g. tab-stop like) would probably work, if I can define the tabstop on a case by case basis? Gr. Matthijs

Hi, currently the accuracy of the trimbox and cropbox breaks preflighting. While the mediabox is rounded to four numbers after the point, the other boxes have 11 numbers. Hi, With current context and luatex revision 3038 I use this sample: \setupinteraction[state=start] \setupurl[color=blue] \starttext \useURL[here][http://google.com] \from[here] \stoptext It compiles with the link shown correctly but in greenish color. Why are pretty printer names uppercased?

Hi all, according to the wiki, and the current code, the arguments to \installprettytype should be uppercased. E.g.: \installprettytype [PHP] [PHP] Referring to them should be uppercased as well: \definetyping[PHP] [option=PHP] \setuptyping[option=PHP] However, the filename should be lowercase, e.g. pret-php.lua and the pretty printer should register itself in lowercase as well: buffers.newvisualizer("lua"). The first thing that happens to the arguments of installprettytype is to lowercase them, and every option= argument that points to a pretty printer is lowercased by setvisualizer in lua before being used. If everything is lowercased, why do we still recommend the arguments to \installprettytype and option= to be uppercase? IMHO this makes things confusing when trying to understand which PHP refers to which php or PHP in the greater picture of things. Why not recommend people to use lowercase identifiers instead, since we're changing everything into lowercase anyway? Or perhaps go a bit further and remove the lowercasing code alltogether, since I don't see any real gain. If the strings / filenames should just match exactly, things will get a lot more predictable? Hello, I have some problems interpreting the ConTeXt manual. If I want to have the appendices labeled as Appendix A: My first appendix Appendix B: My second appendix ... what is wrong with the following approach? \setupsection [section] [appendixconversion=Character, appendixlabel=appendix] \setuplabeltext [sl] [appendix=Priloga~] \mainlanguage[sl] \starttext \startappendices \section{My first appendix} \stopappendices \stoptext I know that I can use something like \setuplabeltext [sl] [section=Priloga~] and will probably do that at the end (by defining my own header type), I'm just wondering what I'm missing in the approach above. Also, I suspect that conversion to Character doesn't work in MKIV (but I don't need it at the moment). Thanks, Mojca

Arabic OpenType kerning

Kerning doesn't seem to work with TRT direction, in the attached axample (using the attached font), enabling kerning with TRT direction inserts positive kern between first kern pair and nothing between the rest (it should be negative kern). [PATCH] Add begin_of_buffer and end_of_buffer hooks for lua pretty printers

Hi all, while working on a custom pretty printer, I was having the need to keep some state variables for the duration of one buffer, and reset them again for the next buffer. With the current hooks a pretty printer has available, this is not possible, since you never know what the first and last lines are. The attached patch adds two new hooks, begin_of_buffer and end_of_buffer, which will be called when typing a buffer or a file (e.g. \typebuffer or \typefile). They are not called for typing a phrase (e.g. \type). Is this patch acceptable for inclusion? Gr. Matthijs

standard focus with interaction is not working

\setupinteraction[focus=standard] has no effect, I get the usual "fit page" mode instead. Works fine with MkII. Example: \setupinteraction[state=start,focus=standard] \starttext \goto{Knuth}[knuth] \page \input knuth \textreference[knuth]{} \stoptext A side note, I'm just wondering why "standard" isn't the default mode, "fit page" is very annoying and distracts me while reading and I wonder why anyone would need that in regular documents? Hi, Guess what happens when you run this with xetex \starttext\recurselevel\stoptext This is a side effect of the definition of \dofastrecurse. Hi I am having some problems with referenced titles and our special characters. In my document I have the following definition -> \mysection[pri:seed] {Priloga C: Tabela ovrednotenih MeSH označb}. Title is generally (in the table of contents and in the document) rendered fine, but when I use it as a reference -> glej \about[pri:seed], stran \at[pri:seed] the output in the pdf is wrong -> glej »Priloga C: Tabela ovrednotenih MeSH oznaÄŊb«, stran 36. Does anybody have any idea how to fix it? using overprint results in broken PDF

With the sample below, the resulting PDF will crash MuPDF, Adobe Reader will show an empty page (though in a longer document it shows a message saying the file is broken and just few pages are rendered while the rest is blank), Evince will open the file and show the text correctly but will give the following errors in the terminal: Error: ExtGState 'GSoverprint' is unknown Error: ExtGState 'GSknockout' is unknown .... Hi, If I set option to empty in setuptyping, the output of \starttyping stoptyping is colored. \setuptyping[option=] \starttext \starttyping % This is a test \stoptyping \stoptext This works fine in MKII, but in MKIV the % is colored. Hi, I use luatex 0.43 with yesterday's beta. Running \everymath = {\displaystyle} \starttext ${a\over b}$ \stoptext results in ! Use of \dospecialabout doesn't match its definition. l.4 ${a\over b }$ Plain format under luatex has no problem here. If I change \over to \times it runs with fonts changed to roman (i.e, not math italics). Thank you. Eythan

What color is "screen"?

Hello, a half-philosophical question (not too relevant). I was wondering: what color exactly is the "screen" (\framed[background=screen]{...})? Or is it a special effect maybe? I know that using it has long been deprecated, but I used it in many older documents as it was easiest to remember without having to think what shade of gray to use to make the highlights in document come out nice. But I just figured out that it became invisible on my screen. One can still see it very very faintly if computer screen is under some weird angle, but a normal glimpse shows nothing. When printed it usually comes out with a rather high contrast. (It may be that I have just changed screen contrast by accident.) I was trying to find the revent line with color, but I don't find it. I noticed grph-fig.mkii: \c!backgroundscreen=.8, but 0.8 is definitely higher that used in documents by default. Thanks, Mojca

Initialisation problem enumeration and way=bysection

Hi all, I have an enumeration: example that will reset by section. Using my own header: Mysection the enumeration is not reset by section. The second instance shows the failure. However, after a \section it suddenly works. And there is a problem with the sectioncounter as well. The headingnumbers are 1 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 instead of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. See the example below. Working on typescripts for Y&Y's LucidaBright (which are type1 fonts) for MKIV (hoping to maintain compatibilty with MKII), the following code produces all math in bold, even the first x+y. \usetypescript[luc]\setupbodyfont[luci]\starttext $x+y$ -- $\bfmath x+y$ \stoptext I studied the new manual chapter on typescripts as well as have worked in analogy with existent typescripts in the current ConTeXt base. I certainly am missing an important clue here. Hello, Thanks, but if I omit second argument, no skip is produced (I often to this to have a place for writing number by pen). How to save the skip with \author{Bla-bla}? Hi, How do I get different prefixes for heads and numbers. Context-minimal installation problem.

Tried to install context minimals including the steps mktexlsr texexec --make --all No errors at this point. But when I tried to run pdftex I get the error message I can't find the format file `pdftex.fmt!' That file is not anywhere in my personal directory. It is however in my bigger texlive 2008 installation. The set command shows: TEXMFCACHE=/home/safer/context/tex/texmf-cache TEXMFOS=/home/safer/context/tex/texmf-linux TEXROOT=/home/safer/context/tex so that part is OK. List of fonts that comes with context minimals

Hi, I wanted to check the fonts that are properly installed with (that come with) the default installation of Context Minimals. As mentioned on the Context Garden, I entered the following command at the terminal prompt *mtxrun --script fonts --list* After doing some things, the terminal gives me the following message: *font loading failed for /System/Library/Fonts/Keyboard.dfont *I also tried* * *mtxrun --script fonts --reload* But that did not work either. I got the same message.

Buggy source code--> references disappears when I put sections and If I put subjects, \completecontent has void list.

Hi, I'm desesperated. I have I source code (that I attached) that when I substitute any (for example the last) ocurrence of subject for section, then references appears in blank. If I maintain the subjects (and subsubjects...), then \completecontent gives me a void list. What happens?. Hans can you help me?. rawmathcollection eats input

In trying to get the math of LucidaBright working, I took as basis the file with mathdefinitions that worked under MKII; that one was derived from an original file in the ConTeXt distribution. Typesetting "\starttext Hello world \stoptext" makes the first word "Hello" disappear. This behaviour can be traced to the start-stop pair: \startrawmathcollection[lucibr] %\definemathcommand ... \stoprawmathcollection Their inclusion (even without any definitions inside) effects the disappearance of the first word; their use came from the original file, it is no invention of mine. \startmathcollection..\stopmathcollection do not pose this problem. Question: why does this happen? I must admit I am unaware of the special role of the raw variant \startrawmathcollection instead of just \startmathcollection. Is this the way to go? find file in beta

Using: the minimals beta distribution. I have added a new map-file for the inclusion of pfb font files in the texmf-local tree: --/fonts/map/pdf/, where the other maps reside. But luatex seems not to find it: luatools --find-file reports nothing. The file however is fine, because if I add it to the directory where the file being TeX-ed is, then it is found indeed. I did things like luatools --generate, mktexlsr, but this did not help. Obviously I am missing the point. Where? Hans van der Meer

math typesetting problem in MKIV

Hi, I have a small equation I am attempting to typeset. Using MKII it comes out fine, but under MKIV the text "non-perf. bal." is not typeset correctly (non-perf is instead nonperf with the dash under the 'p', and extra space appears after 'bal.') \starttext \math{\text{adjusted smm}={{(\text{vTr}+\alpha\times\text{sTr})\times(\text{perf. scheduled bal.})+\text{iTr}\times(\text{non||perf. bal.})}\over\text{balance}}} \stoptext I just updated minimals to ConTeXt 2009.08.17 10:43 and LuaTeX beta-0.42.0-2009071723 and still see the issue. Luatex cache problems with current beta

Hi Hans , Hi all, with the latest beta only luatools --generate generates cachefiles for the trees. context --generate gives: C:\contextminimal>context --generate context --generate MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' Since some days ago I have two luatex-cache folders, one under c:\Temp and one under c:\contextminimal\texmf-cache. That's why I deleted both at the last ConTeXt update today. setuptex.bat sets TEXMFCACHE to c:\contextminimal\texmf-cache. It seems, that luatools writes the cachfiles to the right directory, but context tries to read from c:\Temp\luatex-cache, which not exists. Greetings Lutz
