coverpage with repeated pattern

Hallo List, just started to create a cover page and now my question is how to create a coverpage like the one of the chemic-manual by Hans. Does one need to draw ever line alone or is there a nice way to create this look and feel with much less on coding work. Thanks for your replies. Numbered Labels

Hi all, For a rulebook I wanted to use numbered labels in the margin for each rule like in the manual in chapter 10.5. But I dont get the chapter or section number before the rulenumber. I.e. I only get "Rule 2" instead of "Rule 4.2". How can i manage this? In the Wiki are no hints about that. Below a minimal example of what I tried. Thanks for your help. strange HLs in tabulate

Chinese numeral conversion

Using ConTeXt for a thesis?

Hi everyone! This is my first post here. I've a limited (but sufficient) experience with LaTeX (I've written several work-related documents with it) and now I have to write my undergraduate thesis (the deadline is mid-january 2010). I've been fairy impressed by a book typesetted with ConTeXt, so I used it for some documents and liked the idea and the configurability. The possibility of having a unique and personalized look-and-feel for every document is very appealing to me, and I have already began to assemble a style for the thesis. However, I've a very limited experience with it and I wonder: is ConTeXt the right choice in my circumstances? Can it be used without a degree in typography? I can't write half thesis and then stumble on some obscure (to me) typesetting problem, things have to be smooth and I need to concentrate on content (but I still find desiderable a good unique look). When I have a problem I try my best to resolve it by myself, but given the limited time I can't learn and investigate everything, so if I'll write my thesis in ConTeXt in some (desperate) cases I'll need your help. What do you think? Thank you all! PS: I live in Italy, sorry for my probably imperfect english!

I have a font oddity to report: if I use \setupalign [hanging,hz], the lower case letter "a" disappears in a particular font. This doesn't happen with other fonts and the missing letter comes back if I remove \setupalign [hanging,hz]. If this is a bug that you would like to investigate, I would be happy to send the font privately. missing metafun graphics in mkii

Hello, Does anyone else experience problems using metafun graphics in mkii? Did I miss some runwhatevertrue switch somewhere? Are the stubs in minimals incompatible in some way? At least live.contextgarden.net seems to suffer as well. Minimal example: \startMPcode draw fullcircle scaled 3cm; \stopMPcode If I run the code with some older ConTeXt then the code starts working again with a recent ConTeXt, but recent ConTeXt doesn't generate the jobname-mpgraph.1 file at all. Once compiling the document with an older version, the file is generated and it starts working again. But this behaviour breaks my module :( Thanks, Mojca

Some question regarding Layers

Hi all, i have two questions regarding the use of layers. -- Is there an easy way to position a layer in the middle of the page. My intent is to position some kind of graphic/picture there. I usually try to wrap the picture in a "hbox to \paperwidth {\hfil \externalfigure{} \hfil} and then wrapping the hbox in a vbox -- Is there a better way to achieve this? -- How to do that with layers? -- Is it possible to define and position layers in one Macro. I have something like the following in mind (untested): \define[1]\MLayer{ \definelayer[#1] \setlayer[#1][state=start]{\externalfigure[#1]} } My experience so far is, that it's necessary for a layer to appear that it is listed in "pagebackgrounds" ist this true? With this it seems, that a macro like that above is impossible, true? thanks in advance for your help Erik

file name resolving for lua files

Hi, I have noticed that my local context update scripts were not always working correctly. In particular, the mtxrun and luatools file never got updated. The reason is the following. When I run mtxrun --selfupdate I get mtxrun --selfupdate MTXrun | fileio: to be replaced old script /opt/experimental/tex/texmf-linux-64/bin/mtxrun MTXrun | fileio: using suffix based filetype 'texmfscripts' MTXrun | fileio: checking new script /opt/experimental/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/stubs/mswin/mtxrun.lua MTXrun | fileio: new script should come from scripts/context/lua So, mtxrun is trying to replace mtxrun from the stubs directory. In fact, if I get the same result from luatools --locate mtxrun.lua /opt/experimental/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/stubs/mswin/mtxrun.lua Something is wrong with the search logic as texmfstart also gets this wrong. texmfstart --locate mtxrun.lua /opt/experimental/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/stubs/mswin/mtxrun.lua% However, kpsewhich works correctly. kpsewhich mtxrun.lua /opt/experimental/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/mtxrun.lua Do others also get the same result? Any idea what is going wrong here? Aditya

Math Alignment - start equation at left margin

Hi, Can someone please help with the alignment of the equation so that it starts at left. I tried flushleft and other options (such as without \NC \NR, with align=left etc.). None of them result in the equation starting at the left margin. The equation is either placed in the middle or is aligned to the right. I want it to start at the left. Metapost label - Truncating digits after decimal point

Bug with overprinting in Mark II/IV?

Hello, with color black overprinting is not working. You can easily spot this when you use the »Ausgabevorschau« (sorry, my acrobat is in german locale, must be something with »preview« in english; located in the »tools« menu) in acrobat and remove magenta and black from the preview. Whilst under the region with the magenta colored text the picture gets shown, in the region with the black colored text the text is cut out of the picture, leaving white. I think this is a bug, as overprinting makes most sense with black. It happens both in Mark II and IV -- you have to manually copy the hacker.jpg to your working directory (under linux e.g. with cp $(kpsewhich hacker.jpg) /path/to/your/working/directory) and change the path to make the minimal example work under mark iv. Hi, if \underbar is used inside of an overprinted test, the underbar line does not share the OVP attribute. Mkii works as expected, meaning the stroke is part of the text and should be handled equally. A minimal example is attached. Multi-line Footer?

Hi All, I'm new to ConTeXt and am working on a document that needs some text put on each page of output. I had thought I could use the following but it doesn't work: \setupfootertexts [SPECIFICALLY NEGOTIATED LICENSE RIGHTS\\Use or disclosure of this data is subject to the restriction on the first page of this document.] When I do this, the output is all on one line and clipped off at the beginning and end. Is there a way to put this text in the footer without clipping it off? Thanks in advance for any help offered! -- Scot

\framed

Hi Hans, there was a while ago a suggestion to make \framed a horizontal command by adding \dontleavehmode, it is clear this is not a good idea to make this the default behavior but can't you add a option mode=horizontal|vertical where 'mode=vertical' is the normal \framed behaviour and 'mode=horizontal' goes perform \dontleavehmode to go into horizontal mode. It would be also useful to have a 'direction' key where the setup \framed[direction=RTT]{...} behaves like \starttext \vbox dir RTT{\hsize\textheight\dorecurse{200}{a b c d e f }} \stoptext Wolfgang

page[no] not working?

Hi all, I've come to understand taht using the \page[no] command should prevent a pagebreak at that particular spot whenever possible. However, this seems to be not working for me. My actual problem is with a \startframed directly after a description "header", but the problem is easily reproduced with the below example (for MkII, replace the 25cm with 20cm). The \dontleavehmod was needed to make the \blank work... \starttext \dontleavehmode \blank[25cm] A \page[no] \startframedtext H \stopframedtext \stoptext This example generates the "A" at the bottom of the first page, with the boxed H on the next page, putting a page break exactly where the page[no] is. Is it broken, or am I missing an important detail about how page[no] works? I've also tried \defineblankmethod [nobreak] {\nobreak} \blank[nobreak,line] and some variations as suggested by Wolfgang (IIRC) in some thread from 2008, but that failed with "missing number, treated as zero" for me. Hello, the printing shop wants me to make the columnsetarea bleeding[1] (3mm). However, the background stops at the edge of the a4paper and doesn't even fill the margin. Selectively not using a font feature

Hi all, I'm currently using old-style numerals in my document using the onum otf font feature: \definefontfeature[default][default][onum=yes] This gives very nice results, except for the cases where a 0 appears by itself in the text. In these cases, it appears just like an o instead of a 0. I'd like to explicitly turn off old style numerals for those cases, but I'm unsure how. Any suggestions? Gr. Table macro choices?

Earlier this year I attempted to set tabular material using ConTeXt while meeting *all* the following requirements: > Some columns need fixed width, content must wrap to multiple lines > Multi-page tables > Column headings must repeat on every page > Additional header information is required on every page > Additional footer information containing tabular text and graphics is required on every page > Forced page breaks on arbitrary selected rows > Horizontal rules between specified groups of rows I was unable to meet all these requirements and reverted to LaTeX. It works, but I prefer ConTeXt and the LaTeX version takes a painfully long time to converge on optimal column widths. I'm now using TeXLive 2009, rather than 2008 - has anything changed in ConTeXt that will meet these requirements? David

I was trying to figure out the problem and I found that the database I was referring to was empty. I perhaps forgot to save it. When replaced with the appropriate .bib file I do get the references at the end of the document. But I observed the following. Would really appreciate if someone could point out whether I am making a mistake or whether there is a bug. (1) If the Key has a paranthesis, the \cite[Reference] gives empty brackets. (2) If I use \cite[author][Reference] then I get a line break after the opening paranthesis. (3) Also, note that I refer to only one paper of Daughety and Reinganum in the minimal example below. However, because there are two papers by them in my database, the References section lists the year as (2000a) instead of just (2000). The bbl file generated contains all the references in my database and not only the once I have cited. Should it not contain only the ones I have cited in the document. The following is a minimals example, demonstrating above problems. I have included the bibtex source of the citations used below. Biblography list does not show numbers

Hey all, I'm trying to use a bibliography, but it seems no numbers are show in the biblography that is generated. The following example: Test.tex: ================= \usemodule[bib] \setupbibtex[database=Test] \starttext \section{foo} Blaa \cite[foo] Bar \completepublications \stoptext Test.bib: ================== @article{foo, author = {Bar}, title = {Foo}, year = {2009}, } generates the following text: 1 foo Blaa [1] Bar 1 References Bar (2009). Foo. . So, the citation gets a number as it should, is referenced by the number, but the list of references does not list that number. This makes the bibliography pretty useless :-) This also happens with MkII (though the reference doesn't get a number, but uses the author name and year: (Bar, 2009). Am I missing something, or is this a bug? On a related note, if I remove the \section, no reference will be generated. This is probably not a problem in real documents, though. Gr. Matthijs

Hi all, the following example is not working for me: \setupfloat[intermezzo][before=\startframedtext[width=10cm],after=\stopframedtext] \starttext \placeintermezzo{Caption}{Text} \stoptext It fails with the following message: ! Undefined control sequence. \stopframedtext ->\dostopframedtext l.1 ...ramedtext[width=10cm],after=\stopframedtext ] Am I doing anything wrong, or is there perhaps another way to achieve this? Hi, Is it possible to use .bib files that I had made for latex (it is a bibtex database), with Context? Do I need to use the module bibltx for these? When I compile my source code the Log window says, module bibltx not found (log file is pasted below). I tried the first example in the Bibliography article on Context Garden with some small changes. For example the more sophisticated example from here: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Flow_Charts ignores the comments. See attachment (if that survives this emailing list). So basically this: \connection[rl] {lowpass1} \comment[t]{$x(t)$} \comment[b]{$X(t)$} does not work. You get the line, but not the comments. So basically two questions: 1. This used to work (Ubuntu 8.04). Is the problem solved in any newer version of ConTeXt? 2. If so, is there a way I can upgrade from within Ubuntu? -- All the best, Berend de Boer

About \version[temporary]

Hi all, I have a question which can be elementary, but nevertheless it has some importance… When using cross references, one can somehow « visualize » the list of the cross references on each page with the command \version[temporary] However, in mkii at least, the list of the references is placed at the top of the page in the right margin and this is not very convenient when proof reading, especially in mathematical articles. It would be more handy to have each reference in the left (or right) margin of the line where it is defined or where it is invoked with the command « \in ». However I didn't manage to understand how this behaviour can be changed (various attempts with \setuplist[references] had no effect). (By the way, in mkiv, the list is not shown). Can anyone give an insight?

bibliography authoryears problem

When using refcommand=authoryears and Mk IV the first reference is formatted incorrectly. There is the left parenthesis, then a line break, then the rest of the reference followed by the right parenthesis. With MkII it comes out correctly. And in MkIV, every reference except the first is correct. This is similar to a problem reported in another thread, but I don't see how the resolution proposed there applies here. http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20091116.073439.c2549ecb.en.html It isn't a crucial thing for me. I can use MkII when I need to use this citation style. I'm just submitting this as a possible bug report. This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.46.0-2009112820 \write18 enabled. problem with texmf-local on Vista

Hi, I am a user of Context from the old days, and usually don't need much help installing the software. However, I am needing to use Contextminimals for the first time, as Miktex 2.8 has dropped Context support. My problem is that I have a lot of my own setups and personal fonts and Contextminimals seems to have some problem dealing with local setups. I am using MkII by the way but these problems seem to exist in MkIV also. I have a font, Univers, installed to texmf-local with texfont and Context claims it cannot find the font definitions. running texexec I get the following: !pdfTeX error: pdftex.exe (file 8r-raw-punr8a): Font 8r-raw-punr8a at 432 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! I should have mentioned that there's a similar problem with refcommand=authoryear (my previous post concerned refcommand=authoryears). Using Mk IV, the first citation is preceded with a new line. Mk II behaves appropriately. And all citations other than the first one are formatted correctly by Mk IV. This is quite similar to the problem I reported with refcommand=authoryears. In both cases, only the first citation is wrong and the error in both cases involves a line break. Perhaps they have a related cause. Happy hunting! mjg Samples are attached. Hi all, I need help for the following situation: in a maths paper I would like to have Definitions, Lemmas, Theorems, etc, numbered in a sequential way in each section if any, the numbers being set before the header, and also to be able to refer to them through cross references. For instance, when there is indeed at least a section, in section 1, I would like to have something like 1.1 Definition. Here is the text of the definition in slanted style. … some text… 1.2 Lemma. Here is the text of the lemma in slanted style. …some text… 1.3 Theorem. Here is the text of the theorem in slanted style. …some text… 1.4 Corollary. Here is the text of the corollary in slanted style. And if there is no section at all: 1. Definition. Here is the text of the definition in slanted style. … some text… 2. Lemma. One way would be to define 4 descriptions or enumerations with \definedescription or \defineenumeration but then I don't know how to have numbers incremented in a sequential way in all these descriptions. Another issue with this approach would be that then if one wants to have for example a Conjecture or a Guess, one has to define a new description or enumeration. Has anyone run into such a situation? latest beta and file mismatch problem

I have just installed the latest beta (minimals) and updated my .bash_profile (as advised) so that it now reads: . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin When I try to compile any file, I get: FatalError : Your format does not match the base files! FormatVersion : 2009.11.26 16:28 MKII FilesVersion : 2009.12.01 00:14 How do I fix this? (texexec --make --all did not do the trick.) Alan

Thanks to Otared and Dick Koch, I now have MKII up and running again. The primary change in TeXshop involved setting the path in Preferences/Engine to /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin. for the MKII engine, Otared suggested #!/bin/bash source /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex texexec "$1" What would be best for the MKIV and XeTeX engines? hi, is there a way to let ConTeXt make nested parentheses bigger automatically (based on level of nesting)? if you have like (((((..).)..))..), it is very hard to read if all parentheses are the same size. tobias

inothermargin overlaps

Hi all, I've been using \inmargin to put some stuff in the margin of my text, but when I use multiple \inmargin's close together, the stuff in the margin will overlap. Is there any way to let ConTeXt just move things down to prevent overlap? I'm not forced to move my \inmargin's around, guessing where the line wraps will be, which is not quite elegant and a lot of work... Gr. Matthijs

Visualizing cross references

I am not sure whetehr this message got through or not, so I am posting it again: Hi all, I have a question which can be elementary… When using cross references, one can somehow « visualize » the list of the cross references on each page with the command \version[temporary] However, in mkii at least, the list of the references is placed at the top of the page in the right margin and this is not very convenient when proof reading, especially in mathematical articles. It would be more handy to have each reference in the left (or right) margin of the line where it is defined or where it is invoked with the command « \in ». However I didn't manage to understand how this behaviour can be changed (various attempts with \setuplist[references] had no effect). (By the way, in mkiv, the list is not shown). Can anyone give an insight? Thanks in advance: OK

Hi, I just updated to the latest beta on Windows XP 32bit. mtxrun.exe is broken, saying "cannot be run in DOS mode". So, the context doesn't launch. regards, Vaytcheslav

Hello, in a german text I have to place two figures and a table. If I use \placefigure they are well centered - but with french captions: Table or Figure. I dont need the captions. Windows executables not DOS in beta

Hi, I just updated to the latest beta on Vista and I get the following executing texexec.exe: This program cannot be run in DOS mode. Isn't this just a compiler switch? Would be helpful as I am calling texexec from a Tcl script. Christopher

path juggling in mtxrun or my bad carma again?

Hello, I have one version of gnuplot in ~/bin/gnuplot (the one with support for context terminal) and one in /opt/local/bin/gnuplot. My PATH is set to ~/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/texbin:/usr/X11/bin inside .bash_profile The problem is that now mtxrun calls the second gnuplot in /opt/local/bin/gnuplot and complains about missing context terminal. If I run gnuplot from the same shell it works fine and calls the right gnuplot. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Thanks, Mojca

Problem with hanging punctuation - a bug?

Dear all, I've noticed some strange behavior of hanging punctuation (protrusion). The hyphens in hyphenated words are sometimes protruded and sometimes not. I wasn't able to find out the rule, but I managed to reduce the problem to having just one paragraph that repeats several times in the document. You may notice that the last two paragraphs do not have the hyphens protruded. In my original document, I'm using Minion Pro, however, I was able to reproduce this strange behavior with Pagella as well. I'm attaching PDF showing this behavior. The contex source file is below. Please, does anyone know how to fix this strange behavior? I would like to keep the protrusion as it makes the whole document better aligned. Thank you very much. By the way, why we have two copies of core execuatbles -- one at texmf-mswin\bin and other at texmf-context\scripts\context\stubs\mswin ? The former are called first, so updating the latter had no effect at all. Regards, Vyatcheslav

How to not gobble space after a command

Hi all, I'm working with a few custom macros to simplify typing a bit, like: \def\VHDL{\small{VHDL}} However, when I use this macro in text, like \VHDL this, it gobbles the space after it. I've seen some references that say to solve this by writing \VHDL{} instead, but that is of course very unpretty. I've tried to put all kinds of stuff ({}, \mbox{}, \obeyedspace, etc.) inside the \VHDL macro, but it seems the space is already gone there, so that didn't work. (Note that just putting a space inside the macro won't work, for cases where I use \VHDL, like this) It seems that latex has an xspace package that does some guesswork about whether a space is required, but it looks mightily scary. Does ConTeXt provide for any way to solve this problem in a nice way? Or is this just so fundamental in TeX that there is no real solution? Gr. Matthijs

Strange behaviour of indentation

Dear all, I have some strange problem with indentation. I'm trying to typeset text with some verses. I use indentation in the text, however I would like to suppress it below the verse. So, inside the macro for verses, I use: indenting[next] This works fine, however for some strange reason, the indentation of the text paragraph isn't suppressed at some cases. The macro I use for the verses is a bit more compliated, but I managed to reduce the problem to the simple example below. The first 7 pairs of quote and line are fine, then the text line is indented although it shouldn't be. (Please see the attached PDF.) Please, does anyone know what to do with this problem? setupbibtex produces empty bbl file

Hello all, when i try to compile a document with citations i get an empty .bbl file. log is attached. Interestingly it says (Handout.topThis is BibTeX, Version 0.99c (TeX Live 2009), but paths must be set correct because LuaTeX in my minimals folder is working and there is the file: /Applications/ConTeXt/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/bibtex.
