Maybe using TeX-gyre fonts and some cool feature other than/in addition to the usual maths... There is a famous German politician who has joined the Developer(s), so ConTeXt has political support for the moment... Hallo, I use: ConTeXt ver: 2009.11.24 10:13 MKII fmt: 2009.11.24 int: english/english and I have many problems with columns and footnotes. Is there a possibility to set footnotes in two columns too? I tried \setupfootnotes[location=columns] but I can not see any difference to \setupfootnotes[location=lastcolumn] In the moment I use \setupfootnotes[location=page] and it is often the case that footnotes are printed one page to early. It is sometimes the case that the columns and the footnote area overlapp. What can I do to avoid these problems? Wolfgang

Two interline space setup troubles

Hello, I have some troubles with interline space setup. 1) I want whole document to have medium interline space. When I put \setupinterlinespace[medium] in the preample (before \starttext), it has no effect at all. I want keep all style definitions in a separate environment module, so how to make this setting 'global'? 2) The inbetween key does not work in the following command: \definestartstop[example][style={\tfx}, before={\blank[small]}, after={\blank[small]}, inbetween={\setupinterlinespace[big]}] I can write before={\blank[small]\setupinterlinespace[big]}, after={\setupinterlinespace[medium]\blank[small]} but in this way I hard-code document interlinespace (i.e., medium) in this definition, and this is not elegant solution at all. Labelling with textext

I'm trying to typeset a numerical label (in math mode) and have space for a - sign (but not actually typeset the -) after the number in the case where the number itself is negative. I am trying this label.bot(textext("$" & decimal(x) & "\hphantom{-}$"),(x*u,ay*u)); which fails. If I remove the \hphantom command, i.e., label.bot(textext("$" & decimal(x) & "$"),(x*u,ay*u)); the command is successful, but the number being labeled is not exactly horizontally centered below the point in question since the - symbol preceding the number pushes it a little to the right. framed text backgrounds in enumerations disappear in figuretexts

bib: authornum

Hi, sorry if this is yet another bib question: the "authornum" cite style is a recent addition. It doesn't accept all the setup functions that other styles (such as "authornum") do. The one thing I miss most ATM is the "andtext" option between a publication with several authors. It takes the form Author1,Author2 (just a comma, no space; this can be configured in authornum). I tried adapting the code in bibl-tra.mkiv l. 1506-1515, but failed miserably. Would it be possible to add the configurable andtext to authornum? Thanks, and best Thomas

Good evening, how do I retrieve an author's (or editor's) full name in the correct order (little endian: first name(s) -- surname) from a bib entry? I can do stuff like \getcitedata[author1] but that does leave me with only one of many. I'm convinced the answer lies somewhere hidden in bibl-tra.mkiv inside \complexbibdef and particularly \specialbibinsert but I can't grasp the relevant part (getting the list) of it. When I place a figure at the bottom of a page, everything is fine if it splits a paragraph, but if it falls between paragraphs, indentation of at least one of the paragraphs, generally the one coming after the figure, is lost. Currently I have to export my bibliographies to bibtex format from zotero and then use it through the bibtex module in context. I think this is a awkward way. YABQ - yet another bib question

Hi all, it was quite heartwarming to see how many of us rallied for better bibliographical support when Wolfgang asked what we missed most in ConTeXt... And it's wonderful to see that a new structure for the entire bibliographical stuff is on its way. Hans's xml-based approach will make things much easier than the obsolete bibtex stuff, I'm sure. In the meantime, I'm still struggling with our old bib stuff and have one question. I would like to have two different reference mechanisms for the cite commands and within the publication list. For "normal" cite commands, I would like authornum Author [1], whereas in the publicationlist itself only the num [1]. AFAICS, \setuppublications[refcommand=authornum] will influence both types. Is there a setup option for this, or is a hack needed? All best Thomas

Is there something else I should do? I still have 2 instances of the paragraph immediately after a figure not indented. Both of these are on the tops of their respective pages. And I have one paragraph just before a figure that is not indented. I tried \indenting[yes] for the paragraphs in question to no avail. hi i'm on Win 7 64bit and have installed TeXlive 2009 today via the net-installer. i can process context-files, but have some problems: i get "pdftex warning: pdftex.exe: no glyphtounicode entry has been inserted yet" if i use the command \showmathcharacters, and the table in the pdf is empty. in a more complex file i get "! Hi all, Hans, this is something I had mentioned a few weeks ago, but wanted to complain about it again: when you define xml entities as TeX commands, those used to preserve trailing spaces. This hasn't been the case since a number of version. I would like to recommend havin the old behavior back (since adding spaces isn't as easy in xml as it is in TeX). The example below demonstrates the problem. Adding Items to Bibliography

Hi all, yesterday I tried to use some BibTeX bibliography that I made earlier for use with biblatex but I very soon ended up converting a garbled .bbl to proper \[start|stop]publication format. So my first question is, whether this, without BibTeX, is the canonical way to typeset bibliographies in ConTeXt? The wiki is quite unclear about this and bibmod-doc deals with BibTeX, too. Or is everyone working in secret with the MlBibTeX final release and those 8-Bit phenomena from the dark past are already solved? The second question: where would I begin if I wanted to setup (a) an author-title format for \cite[] (I found no "\bibgetvarX" function to query the publication title), and (b) substitution of consecutive identical authornames with dashes (or "idem", if that matters) in the publications list. Thanks in advance for any clarification on this matter, bibliography support is essential for me. Hello, it seems like the "level" parameter has no effect in mkiv. It works as expected in mkii. Is it a bug or there is different way how to do that in mkiv? Hi Bernhard, Did you ever try \startcombination? I feel like it could solve your problem, but not sure... > there is a nice LaTeX package called floatrow. Most of the things what it does you can do with ConTeXt much more easily expect (i think) one thing: placing more than one picture in a given width with automatic rescaling of the images so all images in one row have the same height. Error using Minimal with TeXworks

Hi! After a long time without having time to play with ConTeXt, I reinstalled a new Minimals using the manual method with rsync, added TeXworks in the proper folder. Under Texworks, I also pointed to the bin folder of Context. But when compiling a document, I get: MTXrun | fileio: no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known) MTXrun | fileio: remembering file 'mtx-context.lua' MTXrun | fileio: remembering file 'mtx-contexts.lua' MTXrun | fileio: remembering file 'mtx-context.lua' MTXrun | fileio: remembering file 'context.lua' MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' Any solution? colors without \definecolor

Hi all, I understand that in order to use a color with \color[somecolor]{colored text} I first have to \definecolor[somecolor][r=.4,g=0,b=1]. Currently I'm trying to do automated colorizing with the help of some lua code and I'd like to make up rgb vectors on the spot without having to \definecolor them first, e.g. something like \color[r=.4,g=0,b=1] {colored text}. Is there a way to achieve this in mkiv? (Right now I'm assigning new rgb values to the same color "name" whenever the function is called that concatenates the next \color[]{} statement. Hi experts, I'm thinking about a new presentation style and need some general advice from the TeXperts. I would like to have a list of topics on some area of the slide (similar to s-pre-19.tex). However, if at all possible, I would like it to be a bit fancier. Let's say I want the list of topics typeset in gray frames in a black font, but the current topic in a blue frame with a white font. Would this be possible with something like \definelist? Is there any notion of "currentlistitem" or "currentmarking" in such lists? Or, even better: would it be possible to have access to the single members of a list and maybe compare them to a current value and then typeset them accordingly? Something like this pseudocode: for member in topiclist do if member == currentvalue <some fancy framing and metapost stuff with member> else <less fancy but still nice-looking metapost stuff> end end Or am I trying to reinvent the wheel here? Hello, How can I place an element as background at a previously defined position? Here a test-file to show what I'm looking for: \definelayer[graphics][position=yes] \setupbackgrounds[page][background=graphics] \starttext Here is some text. I would like to appear a graphics exactly behind \hpos{XXX}{HERE}. How can I do this, without measuring by hand the x- and y-offsets, and perhaps also without using metapost? Dear list and Patrick, from texshow-web page ( http://texshow.contextgarden.net/ ) I read "texshow-web is a web application for all user-commands that can be used in ConTeXt." However, I see that \colored is not inthere. This is also true for some other commands appearing at this list occasionally (usually dug from source by Wolfgang). Is this because 1) the texshow is not updated? 2) these commands are "not meant" for users? 3) any other reason? I think the texshow-web is a very useful source of information. Hi Hans, hi list, some questions for the minimals, used the texlive version up to now and then found out that the 2k9 version of texlive has problems using context mkii and mkiv. so now I will start to use context from the minimals. so would be nice to have some infos before starting. Is the howto in the contextgarden-wiki still up to date or something needed to be changed in there? Is the repository for the minimals only available via rsync or as git too? And if there is no git version available is it planed to get a git repo, or can one simply add one, as I would write an ebuild for funtoo afterwards it would be easier for me to sync it that way, because it is faster and only updates changes, compared to rsync. Would be nice if someone has an advice to me on to fix that, got it working under texexec by creating a cont-sys.tex and linking it to the directory where cont-sys.ori is located. Hello, Below is a test file, to show a bit what I'm looking for: a background-image behind a text-area at a given position relative to the center of this area. I'm not yet satisfied with the result. Here my questions: 1.) Is \startframedtext a good choice for placing the background, or is there something better? 2.) Is \framed[loffset=..., toffset=...]{} a good choice for specifying the position, or is there something better? 3.) When "left=1", why is the image completely outside the frame and not only 50%? 4.) How do I make a step between text and background according to http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Presentation_effects ? I would like to show first the text, and after a mouse-click the background image. Any syntax highlighter for C++ MKIV?

The verbatim function in MKIV is really powerful, and pretty printing of progamming language is easy. But unfortuantely, I do not know how to modify the php, or lua pretty printing formatter to what I want --- C++ formatter. After laboriously searching, I failed to find any working formatter. Is this really really easy, nobody wants to post it? Or there is no person in need of such a formatter, but only me? I tried vim highlighting module in the wiki, but it always complains cannot find "xxx-vimsyntax.tmp" and something, in both windows and unbuntu. I know it is something about mtxrun curruent version. But I still cannot fix it after I did following the posts in this mailing list.

Figure not placed at margin

The following code fragment places the desired graphic at the beginning of the chapter but indents it to the right a quarter or 3/8 of an inch. The text (parameter #2, the chapter title) prints to the right of the figure but sometimes extends into the right margin. Other times, it wraps down to following lines as it should. The text begins right against the graphic (in a blank space) as it should, but the whole thing, graphic and text, are offset to the right rather than being aligned with the left margin. All other figures in the document are where they are supposed to be. Hi, consider a folder containing foo.tex and foo.mp. Suppose that, when compiled, foo.mp outputs foo.1. Then, the following: texexec foo.tex mptopdf foo.mp will end up having foo.pdf deleted. I guess this is because mptopdf creates foo.pdf out of foo.mp *and then* renames it into foo-1.mp. Is it true? Is there a workaround (something like -jobname), other than using different names? Context and Windows7

I want to install ConText on my Windows7 computer. I thought that it would be a good idea if I checked the mailing list archive first, to see if there had been any problems with Windows7. I didn't find any messages related to Windows7, but I don't know if this is a good or bad thing. There is 1 page on the wiki regarding a problem with the complete configuration of Context in Windows7 and Scite which a user has. I was going to go ahead and download the mswin zip file from the pragma web site, but, the zip file just seems to exist there now as the minimals distribution, rather than the 'big' distribution I had on my old computer (which has gone to that great scrap heap in the sky due to a catastrophic failure). So, I'm looking for advice before I go any further. Should I download the minimals and look into an editor other than Scite, which I never felt totally comfortable with anyway. Should I just go straight to luatex and MKIV? Are there other options available? Best Wishes Keith

Balancing vertical placement of table

I have a single page layout as follows: * Landscape + letter page * Block of multi-line text (variable number of lines) which occupies the left third of the page * Table with variable number of rows which occupies the right two-thirds of the page I'm using \framed for the left text block and \placetable for the table. Is their a way to vertically place the table such that one-third of the vertical whitespace (above and below the table) is placed above the table, two-thirds below the table? The number of rows in the table varies enough that a fixed top position looks sub-optimal. Is it possible to do something similar with the block of text, perhaps using a different top/bottom split for the vertical whitespace? Are \framed and \placetable the best way to do this? david

Linux PPC64 & minimals

Hello, I just tried to install the minimals on: uname -a Linux perthite 2.6.30-gentoo-r5 #6 SMP Wed Jan 13 17:59:36 NST 2010 ppc64 PPC970FX, altivec supported PowerMac7,3 GNU/Linux but got: sh ./first-setup.sh Error: your system "Linux ppc64" is not supported yet. Please report to the ConTeXt mailing-list (ntg-context(a)ntg.nl) The machine reports as ppc64 but it is running a 64 bit kernel with 32 bit userland. I'd like to know how to proceed. If necessary I am quite willing to build the minimals on this platform and contribute the binaries back to the wiki. Cheers, Roger

Changes in simplefonts

Hi all, So the following used to work perfectly, but no longer does: \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[Liberation-Serif] \starttext I feel so Liberated that {\ConTeXt} can see all my system fonts! \stoptext I don't seem to remember changing any configuration in order to get ConTeXt to see my system fonts (running ArchLinux, so it follows Linux standards). Yet now I cannot get the simplefonts module to see what it used to see fine. Has there been some backend changes so that *.ttf files on the system are now ignored? Do I need to install it to the ConTeXt directory or is there another alternative? I use a framed paragraph to build this marker, however, if the document contains floats, I have some difficulties being sure that this marker will always be located at the very end of the document (i.e. after all floats). Is there a command to flush all floats? Or do you suggest another way to build an end marker? Hi All, How do I go about getting split tables to be numbered as, for example, 1.3a and 1.3b, instead of 1.3 and 1.4? I'm using "bychapter" numbering. Another problem is that the tables end up getting numbered differently for different output formats (e.g. print vs. screen). So for instance, you can't refer to "table 4.7" in an e-mail, because you might be looking at the presentation version of the document, but others might be looking at the printed version. But if I happen to start a new section after that text, then part of the last paragraph from the first page gets pushed to the second page, leaving the text on page 1 short. Problem With an Enumeration After a Forced Float

Hi All, Here's a corner case for you: place a figure with the 'force' option, followed by an enumeration with a background. If you take the background away from the enumeration (delete the 'before' and 'after' options), OR take the 'force' option off the \placefigure command, then the problem goes away. But if I add a second \startC ... \stopC section, then it breaks. Hi Context users, I try to use Scite with Context in Ubuntu Linux, and followed the instructions in the ''Scite in Context'' manual. 1. Copied /usr/share/texmf/context/data/cont-*-scite.properties files to /usr/share/scite where scite's properties files reside. 2. From Options menu, I selected Open User Options File (that happens to be /home/milton/.SciTEUser.properties) and inserted the line import context in that file 2. Copied /usr/share/texmf/context/data/context.properties file to my home, that is, /home/milton since it is where the SciTEUser.properties file also resides (in Linux it is .SciTEUser.properties) Result: 1. I get the Tools menu. 2. I do not the autocompletion. This is the much needed one. Is there any properties that I have not set correctly? Regards ---Milton

Context bug - output is shifted about 0.5 cm left

Hello, I couldn't find any note of this problem on the internet, so I'm reporting it. In the latest ConTeXt, the output of any document is shifted somewhat to the left. To reproduce: create a document with a few paragraphs of text. To make the problem more visible, use \showlayout. On the right side of the page, there is about 0.5 cm gap. When the PDF is opened in Inkscape, we can see that the lines produced by \showlayout are outside the page on the left side. It happens on live.contextgarden.net as well as on my windows machine with the minimal context distribution. The problem does not occur in plain luatex. The problem happens with pdftex engine as well. I tried viewing the PDF in multiple viewers. As this is an important problem, I suspect you are already aware of it, but I couldn't find any notice about it. Roman Plášil

bib: no booktitle for @inbook

Hi, when I insert a citation of type @inbook, it only shows the "title", not however the "booktitle". I tried ams, num, apa and apa-de. Example entry: @inbook{Coles2007, address = {Berkeley, CA}, author = {Coles, Michael}, booktitle = {Pro T-SQL 2005 Programmer’s Guide}, doi = {10.1007/978-1-4302-0387-2}, isbn = {978-1-59059-794-1}, pages = {323--341}, publisher = {Apress}, title = {{SQL Metadata}}, year = {2007} } On a side-node: in bibl-apa-de.tex: \def\insertchap#1#2#3% {\insertchapter {#1\insertbibtype{}{\ }{chapter\ }}{#2}% {#3}} ^^^^^^^ ... should read "Kapitel". \at inherits from costum \definereferenceformat

Hello all, when i define a new reference with \definereferenceformat the \at command inherits the value from the left and right keys (see attachement). Is there a solution to prevent this or can i maybe define a costume reference format which outputs the pagenumber and not the sectionnumber? best regards Bernhard
