Removing Introduction section number

Hello, It might be 100 time this question appears on the list, but I cannot find the answer. I need Introduction to have no number, and next section to have number 1, so on. My current solution gives me number 2, instead. Is there any document that describes the pdf options changing in Context? [OT] How TeX Gyre small caps were generated?

I'm just wondering how TeX Gyre were generated, did they use some MetaType1 magic, or was it designed by hand. I've vague memories suggesting the former, but I can't find anything about this right now, nor I can find MataType sources of the fonts (if there are). I'd like to use such technique for XITS fonts, since STIX didn't provide small caps, and I'm not into hand designing hundreds of LGC small caps. Hi, When I run mtxrun --ifchanged, it echoes the status messages on stdout. This makes it impossible to use mtxrun --ifchanged as part of a standard unix pipe. What is the right way to resolve this? * Output these messages to stderr rather than stdout? * Provide a --silent option mtxrun that suppresses all output? I can parse the generated output and remove the lines starting with MTXrun, but that is no fun. Aditya

failure with "luatools --generate"

Hi, I ran into trouble compiling beta of June 10. It seems to me that luatools is now a script run under mtxrun. Under linux I made executable the scripts scripts/context/stubs/unix/{mtxrun,context, luatools}. Hi! I use $x↦2x$ in xits, and it prints x→2x instead of x↦2x. The same file works with latin modern. It seems that xits-math contains U+21A6 (↦) symbol (at least, kcharselect displays this character in xits-math font), so it should be related to some meta-information.

sgf package

Hi, what is the status of the SGF package? When I wanted to install it (extras="t-sgf"), the installation failed and it did not install even with the option extras=all. Strange nieuw directory after updating with first-setup.sh

Hi, I just updated the minimals and I see a strange directory: This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.60.1-2010042810 Current version: 2010.06.10 15:24 .../lua60.1 is the texroot. ../lua60.1/tex/lua60.1 ^^^^^^^ This subdirectory contains: ../lua60.1/tex/lua60.1/web2c ../lua60.1/tex/lua60.1/web2c/luatex ../lua60.1/tex/lua60.1/web2c/luatex/pdftex ../lua60.1/tex/lua60.1/web2c/luatex/xetex ../lua60.1/tex/lua60.1/web2c/luatex/metafun.mem This does not sound quite healthy? Further I am struggling with the fact, that Context does not find private fonts when they are in texmf-fonts/data/vendor/font. Only if I place them into texmf-local/fonts/afm/vendor/font, texmf-local/fonts/opentype/vendor/font etc they show up in the pdf. The strange thing is, that if the fonts are in texmf-fonts/data/vendor/font they are cached correctly and "mtxrun --locate Seravek-Regular.otf" reports the correct path to the font. Puzzled. Willi

marginrules vs. papersize

I'm having a problem with marginrules. If the papersize is a4 they work just fine. When I switch to letter paper, however, the rules no longer line up with the paragraph. (This is TeX Live 2007 kit in Fedora, fwiw) Martin \setuppapersize[letter] \setupoutput[pdftex] \starttext \startmarginrule The sound of a duck is a good demonstration of how different people listen to a sound. Everywhere in Europe the sound is equal. But in every country it is described differently: kwaak||kwaak (Netherlands), couin||couin (French), gick||gack (German), rap||rap (Danish) and mech||mech (Spanish). If you speak these words aloud you will notice that in spite of the consonants the sound is really very well described. And what about a cow, does it say boe, mboe or mmmmmm? \stopmarginrule \stoptext

Irregularity in a topspace a bottomspace?

I was surprised that when I set up (in the MKII and MKIV too) topspace parameter to a nonzero value and the value of the bottomspace parameter to zero value, then the size of bottomspace is the same as topspace size. On the other side, if I set topspace to zero value and the bottomspace to nonzero value, ConTeXt behaves as I expected. Is this a normal behavior ConTeXt? Ie. when bottomspace is zero, then the paper has only the tops and not bottoms? 'kpse.find_file' now can not work in MkIV (beta 2010.06.10 15:24). The attachment is a minimal example for this. XITS fonts - second beta

This release features also a rudimentary user guide. PDF Custom Page Numbering

Hello, while reading through the PDF to ISO-9075-1 (SQL99), I noticed something I had never seen before in a PDF: the page numbers displayed by Acrobat matched exactly the ones in the document ... the beginning was even numbered with roman numbers and the actual content started again at "Page 1". From a quick research it seems that this functionality is in PDF since Acrobat 4 (that should be PDF 1.3, right?) and is most likely called "Custom Page Numbering". It would be amazing if ConTeXt/LuaTeX supports that too - especially if you produce documents for screen reading. Unfortunately I don't have access to the PDF Specification currently to give you more info - so I don't even know for sure how that feature is officially called. Anyway, I hope that idea/suggestion/wish finds positive reactions ... and I somehow hope that it isn't actually too hard to implement :-) Best Regards, Andreas.

Relative references to floats

Hello, is there currently (in MkIV) some way to have relative references to floats? I imagine something like "... as you can see \above[fig:somefigure]." which would print "... as you can see above." if the figure is above the current paragraph or "... as you can see below." if it is below. Maybe it's unusual to do that in books/papers, but I thought it might look better than to reference a page or a number if it is expected, that the figure is close by anyway. It would be nice if it could even go so far as to include page offsets ... "... as you can see on the next page" or "... as you can see two pages ahead". I have no real need to use this, it was just an idea to tidy up my text a bit (without risking wrong references when the layout changes and floats shift around). Mutiple citations doesn't work with compress=no + interaction

I know that if I want to have clickable hyperlinks for citations, I need to turn off 'compress' for the citation type: \setupcite[authoryears][compress=no] The problem is that this doesn't seem to work: I get an 'unknown reference' error. references : unknown reference [][Balachandran2008 references : unknown reference [][Balachandran2008 references : unknown reference [][Balachandran2008 Strangely, this only happens when I want to refer to multiple authors, e.g. \cite[ref1, ref2, ref3], and everything works fine if I just do \cite[ref1]. <CRLF> is interpreted as a Greek letter in LuaLaTeX

Hi, When I want to write in LuaLaTeX by "tex.print" command some text string that is defined in an external lua-file, so <crlf> characters in LuaLaTeX appear as the Greek letter "omega". The Greek letter omega has in the font CM code 0x0A, which is a line feed. It seems that the end of the line is interpreted not as the end of the line, but a letter. When I define a text string directly in the source file, everything is OK. Please do not know how to solve this problem? Hi, I'm using the ams-bibliography style and want to include "authornum"-cites in the document (so i want to input something like "in the paper by \cite[authornum][doe]" instead of "in the paper by Doe \cite[num][doe]". The \cite command works as intended, but I'm not able to change the typesetting properties with \setupcite[authornum][...]. The others, like \setupcite[num][...] and \setupcite[author][...] seem to work as they should, though. I provide a minimal example below, where to options set in line 4 are not used for typesetting the \cite[ref1]. I'm using the context minimals, MkIV. \usemodule[bib] \setupbibtex[database={test.bib}] \setuppublications[alternative=ams, refcommand=authornum] \setupcite[authornum][left={\&}, andtext={ foo }, namesep={ bar }] % just some random options, none of them works \starttext \cite[ref1] \completepublications[criterium=all] \stoptext I already tried apa style, the same there. Hello, I am using: \setupfootertexts [chapter] \setupheadertexts [section] \setupheadertexts [][pagenumber] [pagenumber][] % doublesided to place the chapter title in the footer and the section title in the header. (Of course, I also use \setuphead [chapter] [header=nomarking,footer=empty,page=right] \setuphead [part] [header=nomarking,footer=empty,page=right] so that \chapter{} and \part{} begin on an odd page without a text header nor a footer.) However, a \chapter{} may begin with a long introduction (several pages) before seeing a \section{}. In this case, the header gets the title of the last section of the preceeding chapter. Similarly, a \part{} may begin with a long introduction (several pages) before seeing a \chapter{}. In this case, the footer gets the title of the last chapter of the preceeding part. This is incorrect. Is there some way to have the section text reset for each \chapter and the chapter text reset for each \part? (I would expect a "way=bychapter" and "way=bypart" type of option and also suggest that this be the default behavior). Alan By the way, there appears to be a (recent) bug in that \setupheadertexts [section] \setupheadertexts [][pagenumber] [pagenumber][] % doublesided works, whereas \setupheadertexts [][pagenumber] [pagenumber][] % doublesided \setupheadertexts [section] currently is broken (no page numbers occur).

Problems using new beta

Hi all! I am just new to ConTeXt, I have played with it for one week. I have installed standard ConTeXt minimals installation and no other TeX distro is installed on my MS Vista computer. I use also TeXworks editor. On Sunday, after I installed new package, I realized, that my workflow is broken. I received next message in my TeXworks editor, the same for command line: MTXrun | run 1: luatex --fmt="C:/context/tex/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/2fea56f92e5267d7cc9662e4d5f52e1e/formats/cont-en" --lua="C:/context/tex/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/2fea56f92e5267d7cc9662e4d5f52e1e/formats/cont-en.lui" --backend=pdf "./dopis.tex" This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.60.1-2010060523 (Web2C 2010) (rev 3685) \write18 enabled. ! I can't find file `./dopis.tex'. <*> ./dopis.tex Please type another input file name: I have my documents in "C:\Users\Ivo\TeX" directory and ConTeXt worked fine until the new sync. When I tried to find what is wrong, I realized strange thing. When I move my document somewhere inside my TEXMF tree (C:\context\tex), it works. For example I copied dopis.tex into c:\context\tex\texmf-project and everything was ok. Maybe it is my mistake, but I am not experienced enough to find it. But it worked before. Maybe this is related to another problem I have. I would like to combine the xml path search of two different levels. An example, the xml can be either case #1: <main> <a> <b><c/></b> <b><c/></b> </a> </main> or case #2: <main> <b><c/></b> <b><c/></b> </main> Now I want to process the <c> elements from the <main> level and loop through them with the position function: \xmlfilter{#1}{/(a/b|b)/name/position(\the\scratchcounter)} This however does not work, I tried various path expressions, for example with * but to no avail. \definetextbackground - problem with footnotes

Hi, I use \definetextbackground to create an environment that is set-off from the main text. This (now) works correctly, except in the particular case when the backgrounded text wraps to a second page and the first page contains a footnote. In this particular case, the footnote also gets the background, which is not the desired behavior. Is this a bug or am I not using \definetextbackground correctly? Clipping of text (or something equivalent)

Hi all, I'd like to achieve in context something like I did in the attachment (context.pdf). My idea was (and that's the way how I did this in Inkscape): - Create Text - Double the text - Clip one for the upper half, clip the other for the lower half - Connect the two halves. My (probably naive) approach to clipping text in context was: ----- \starttext \startuniqueMPgraphic{context} draw btex \bf Context etex xyscaled (4.0, 4.0) withcolor .8white ; clip currentpicture to unitsquare; \stopuniqueMPgraphic \null\dontcomplain \uniqueMPgraphic{context} ----- (Without the "clip" - line, the string "Context" is displayed. With clipping, nothing is displayed.) Any hint in the right direction towards clipping or maybe a better way to achieve this is appreciated. Thanks Erik

It seems that \ineq doesn't clear some variables, and the next \in uses the previous format.

Hi all, after spending many hours on a typescript only to accidentally delete it, I thought that there should be a better way to write them. Hence I wrote a python script to do just that. It started out as a private project, but I thought that since it might be useful to others, I'd make it available publicly. Compiling by LuaLaTeX specific messages appear as if the Lua in LuaLaTeX didnt know some Lua commands (i.e. split, find .... ). This can usually be done in .bashrc, .bash_profile (or whatever file is used to initialize your shell). i don´t know where the problem lies (obviously mtxrun is complaining). the last update i did worked normal (ConTeXt ver: 2010.05.24 13:05 MKIV fmt: 2010.6.1) Please help! best regards Bernhard

Hi! Are there any automatic unit test for ConTeXt distribution? At least the bug with referenceformat can be catched using something like context test pdftotext test.pdf test.txt diff test.txt test.txt-good And the bug with broken footnote can be catched using just "context test". If there are unit test, where can I find them (I'd like to add more)? If there are no, any objections against adding them, and testing before releasing new beta?

new beta

Hi, I uploaded a new beta to the website (will be synced with the garden minimals). I'm in the process of removing old code that is no longer needed (after all, luatex evolves). As part of the process there has been some changes in the generation of the format. It works ok on my machine (windows 7) and Taco's (linux). It might be that some things are broken but I see no immediate problems. Keep in mind that as we're now in beta mode again, we also need luatex > 0.60 and we will deviate from the tex live current. Best not drop files from the beta into the upcoming tex live but use a separate tree. The next current will be around the context meeting when we also plan to have luatex 0.70+. Hello all, in the process of learning macro programming in context i encountered the following problem (minimal example is attached): When i have \setuphead[section][color={red}] the color key influences in a strange way my „novice macro“ (see the text which should be black but is red). Further more the \ruledhbox in my macro stops at some point the red color (with a normal \hbox all the text in the section is red). what i´m doing wrong here? Wrong spacing before and after commas in math(?)

Hi, if I'm typesetting for example $(a,x,\dots,b)$ I see that the space before the x is too small. It should be bigger than the space after the x. I could work around it by typing $a,\,x,\dots,\,b$ but this is somewhat inconvenient and even a bit too much spacing... On the other hand, the spacing before \dots is just right, but the spacing after \dots is too small: the spaces between commas and periods ",...," should all be the same. Is this a bug? Can this be changed by a global option or something? Thanks for any help in advance. As promised, the OpenType MATH enriched version of STIX fonts, XITS, is now available. This early version provides: * OpenType math constants values, necessary for proper layout of various math elements. * proper math accent positioning. * proper sub/superscript positioning (not fine tuned yet). * extensible radicals, delimiters and math accents. * oldstyle figures. * some pre-composed fraction. hello all, i finished a presentation (my first ConTeXt creation!), and now i've got a couple days to get creative again. i'm trying to understand how the typeset lines of text in the MetaPost manual were outlined in Section 5.1. i've just discovered that \MPpos only seems to work in MPpositiongraphics, and initialize_box sets `pxy' to \hpos's contents bounding box. what if you want pxy to be not strictly a rectangle, but the path that encloses text, etc., which is just part of flowing text in a paragraph, like page 247 (beginning of Positional Graphics chapter) in the MetaPost manual? i've read the MetaPost manual. i hope the answer isn't too obvious. thanks, adam

I was creating a document with many hyperlinks and tooltips, and everything was working, until it reached a certain size. Two strange behaviors began: 1. At the top of Adobe Reader I get a purple band that says "Please fill out the following form..." 2. Tooltips no longer appear at the first rollover. Instead, a pale blue box with a checkmark pops up. On the second rollover, my tooltips appear as normal. Is this some limit inherent in Context, pdf, or Adobe Reader? Is there a way to work around it?

Hi! I try the following with current beta: \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext \placeformula[eq:test] \startformula 1=1 \stopformula \pagebreak \in[eq:test] \stoptext When I click on the link, nothing happens. The links generated by LaTeX+hyperref work in the same viewer (okular, poppler based). Sometimes links work, but point me to the page instead of specific location (e.g. theorem, lemma, etc.).

Hello, I defined \def\url[#1]{\hyphenatedurl{#1}} for URLs, because I find \useURL[][] \from[] inconvenient (there are ~30 URLs in my document and all of them unique). But \hyphenatedurl doesn't work with '%' (and '\%' gets printed literally). I'll just use \useURL as a workaround, but shouldn't \hyphenatedurl work as well? -- -- Rogutės Sparnuotos

Hello, What is the correct way to set 'alternative=c' for the \completelistoffigures? Hi all, esp. Mojca, I don't know if anything changed recently, but first-setup.sh doesn't fetch the latest beta for me anymore, even when I feed it the "-- context=beta" switch. At first, I thought it was a glitch, but I have now tried on 3 different computers, and after running first-setup.sh, I always get MTXrun | main context file: /Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/ context/base/context.tex MTXrun | current version: 2010.05.24 13:05 even though the beta version 2010.05.27 has been available for a while. It produced a break frequently seen in published prose (I'm currently reading {\em Bluebeard} where Kurt Vonnegut uses it liberally) with significant vertical space between two paragraphs and, centered both in that vertical space as well as horizontally, a number of well-spaced marks. There are usually 3 marks, and they are frequently asterisks or traditional dingbats/fleurons. Dear all, I have two questions regarding using spacing in enumerations. Depending on a mode being enabled, I would like to add a command at the beginning of an enumeration (I want to place something in the margin, but it doesn't actually matter what I do, only when). As shown in the minimal example below, invoking the macro that does something, a little extra space is added. I don't know why, it is probably something very TeX-basic I am ignorant of. So: How do I get rid of the extra space? The problem occurs both in mk2 and mk4, I would prefer a solution that also works in mk2. Thanks! BibLaTeX

I frequently use LaTeX with BibLaTeX and the BibLaTeX-Chicago Style package to typeset scholarly material. For me, BibLaTeX is a great tool. However, I am attracted to ConTeXt because, coming from a desktop-publishing background, ConTeXt gives me more/easier control over document layout and structure. Thus I began to dream of a "chocolate + peanut butter" combination of the two. I would like to know if anyone has thoughts on the possibility of using BibLaTeX & Biber with ConTeXt -- perhaps through a wrapper module of some kind? I don't understand the internals of LaTeX or ConTeXt well enough to know if this is a ridiculous question. I respect the ConTeXt Bib module, but BibLaTeX-Chicago offers exactly what I'm looking for. Both BibLaTeX and ConTeXt use e-TeX, and the internals of BibLaTeX appear not to be LaTeX-specific. So, would it be possible to write a ConTeXt module that bypasses Bib and provides an interface between ConTeXt bibliography commands and BibLaTeX/Biber? Thanks, PPN

Strange expansion behavior in XML/luatex

Hello, I had a problem with some my documents; I extracted it to as small code as possible. What is happening -- if any of xml flushing function (I tried xmlflush, xmlfilter and xmlall) is expanded to a macro (so the content of xml becomes a text of the macro), and the xml contains other hooked xml tags, the \edef (and its counterparts \xdef or \expandedaction) inside the inner tag is "skipped" by the log. Then macros relying on the expansion fail (I detected it in \doif and \processaction). Macros are normally expanded, only \edef fails (maybe some other TeX commands fail too, but I did not test it). In my example below, content of "il" is flushed to a macro, "inline" is the inner tag and "\processaction" is the example of macro using "\edef". Do not look for sense, it is an example. I'm trying to anchor a table or box containing my title and subtitle to the bottom right corner of the textblock (on a title page). The following comes very close to doing what I want, but there is still some vertical space between the bottom of the text of the subtitle and the last major horizontal gridline. How can I have the subtitle text be (above and) flush with the last major horizontal gridline in the same way that it is flush with the rightmost vertical gridline? With the page layout setups I'm using, the first table of contents entry on each page (except for the first page) is formatted as if it were on the preceding page. I assume that the page number is not advancing until some number of objects are placed on the page. When I compiled the example included below, it was the first three entries on each page (after the first page) that were formatted as if they were on the previous page. Related to this, I need "invisible" page numbers on the table of contents pages to enable different formatting by odd/even page number (which I accomplish now by using \phantom as a style command for page numbering), but I'd like for the page numbering of the body matter to start at 1. Also, how can I number the front matter backward? Difference in whitespace around section head from mkII to mkIV

hi all, i'm experiencing some unwanted whitespace related to a section head. the whitespace is present when using lua (texexec --lua funk.tex) and absent when using mkII (texexec funk.tex). i've confirmed the correct mkII behaviour on the garden's live tool, and my own minimals installation: This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.60.1-2010050621 (rev 3678) \write18 enabled. luatools not finding files in TL 2010

Hans, if I run mtxrun --script patterns --convert on TeX Live 2010 it stops working with cannot open : No such file or directory #1 feature request: it would be nice to have a slightly more informative feedback The problem appears in the following line: function scripts.patterns.prepare() dofile(resolvers.find_file("char-def.lua")) end inside mtx-patterns.lua since apparently luatools doesn't find char-def.lua > luatools char-def.lua [no response] > kpsewhich char-def.lua /Users/mojca/soft/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/char-def.lua [kpsewhich finds the file] In ConTeXt minimals this works fine. #2 bugfix request: any idea why it fails or how to fix it? Hi, I'm making my syllabus title page with standard "bureaucratic" elements, like signature stamps, etc. Please, look at the attached png file for idea how it should look like. I started new page using \startstandardmakeup, which centered the text too. But I have problems with signature: how to reset the alignment to left, and, more important, how to place two \fillinrules in one line of text ("_day_"_month_ year)? Windows Minimals installer is broken -- mtxrun does not work

Hello everybody and esp. Mojca, I started updating my Windows installer code to include "--extras" switch. Unfortunately, I found that mtxrun.cmd does not exist anymore and is replaced by mtxrun.exe. Moreover, mtxrun.exe is not working at all, complaining "mtxrun: unable to locate texlua.exe on the search path", while texlua.exe is present in the same folder! Please, help me fix this issue, because installer is broken for the moment. Regards Best, Vyatcheslav

LuaTeX error ... object in use

I keep running into errors that look like this: ! LuaTeX error ...imal/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/lpdf-ini.lua:345: pdf.immediateobj() object in use I can't find anything specific that's causing them. For example: input{chapter1} input{chapter2} fails, but: %input{chapter1} input{chapter2} and input{chapter1} %input{chapter2} work. Or, I may make a small change, get the error, reverse the change, and continue to get the error. Maybe I need to allocate more memory somehow? what's wrong?

setups in typescripts

Hello, i have made a typescript which works. the only thing is that i have in my typescript something like: \startsetups [fallbackfonts] … \stopsetups \starttypescript [bla] \setups[fallbackfonts] … \stoptypescript referring in my document to the typescriptfile with \usetypescriptfile[Mytypescript] does not load the setups and so the font fallback is not working (obviously \usetypescriptfile only loads the typescripts). When i do: \input Mytypescript in the document all works as expected. So my question is how can i load setups with \usetypescriptfile Maybe i have to make a extra „fontfallback-setups“ file, but i don´t know how it is recognized by context. Hi! Unicode subscripts do not work (at least, in math): \starttext $a₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉₋₌₊$ \stoptext prints only "a". The file char-def.lua contains block like this: [0x2080]={ category="no", description="SUBSCRIPT ZERO", direction="en", linebreak="al", specials={ "sub", 0x0030 }, unicodeslot=0x2080, }, Which file should handle this "specials={ "sub", 0x0030 }"? P.S.: Superscript digits work. Probably, the font contains ¹ but not ₁.
